Rone — Room with a View (InFine)

Chilled cerebral tones pulse and wink. A faint thump works through layers of translucent sound. Voices drift in from other rooms, speaking multiple languages. This fifth album from the French ambient producer Rone—real name Erwan Castex—offers glowing, light-filled musical abstractions, loosely tied to a theme of climate change, but mostly floating euphorically free of narrative or didactic purpose.
Rone wrote these compositions for a performance piece commissioned by the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and developed with the choreography collective (LA) HORDE and 20 dancers of the Ballet National de Marseille. And yet, though conceived for dance, Room with a View seems to exist almost entirely in the mind. The faint bits of the real world that flit by – a young child’s voice, two scientists talking about ecological catastrophe, a series of actors speaking different languages, an interlude of pure breath— seem far away and unreal. You’ll have a sense of floating through brightly colored atmospheres without too many landmarks. It’s hard to picture where the dance steps would go.
That’s not to say that there aren’t genuine pleasures to be hard, however removed they seem from ordinary life. “Nouveau Monde,” the one recast in that very vivid, fascinating video above (shot at Carnival in Haiti by the director Jérôme Clément-Wilz) is dizzying. It clatters with idealized bells, as if a herd of mountain sheep were moving in precise, dancefloor synchronization. Its ecstatic arpeggios of clean, clear synth cavort over a shuffling sandblock rhythm. Some spoken word, in French, intercedes. It is a heady, enveloping experience.
“Human,” later on conjures prayerful reverence out of organ, synthesizer and denatured human voices. An uncomplicated melody— no more than a measure or two in length, but full of longing — builds in waves and is finally picked up by a humming choir. It’s one of the few cuts that uses human singing, more or less as it is. You can hear at the end how this warm, organic texture transmutes into pure light and sensation.
You get a sense of performance, finally, on “Babel” where actor’s voices (they are unmistakably actors) shout things at one another in English, French, German and perhaps other languages, as a string-like swell builds urgency and purpose. This one, too, has huge crescendos built out of ping-ponging synthetic sound, blasts of brass like drama, flourishes of violin-ish vibrato. It is, per the title, a monument to blocked communication, but in the music, attuned to the pulse of life and joy and meaning that runs under all languages, spoken and unspoken.
All in all, Room with a View is rather good, easy to enjoy in a hedonistic way, even if you never read the notes about the theatre piece, the focus on climate or any other philosophical underpinnings. In fact, I’d go as far to say you’re better off going in blind and just letting this music float you away.

Rone - Nouveau Monde
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/841b7db179efab547490c6708c50ac22/2d8b05e7e6f4716b-0a/s540x810/2ee4aa1554fff71cb2b7b6451ff81e7ced44eb76.jpg)
"Nouveau Monde", is the latest track from French producer Rone, where he recruits director Jérôme Clément-Wilz to take the lead on the single’s visuals. Shot amidst Carnival in Haiti, the track’s colorful percolation and jangly electronic charms are meant to compliment the celebration and protest behind the festival. A notable minimalist in song and structure, Rone’s track is the only where a few spoken words take the lead, instead relying on the repetition to force the sentiment of the track’s ebb and flow. Speaking about how the visuals came to the director while listening to the track, Jérôme Clément-Wilz had this to say in an excerpt about the track:
“This film is a tribute to madly vivid Haitian culture. Every year the people of Jacmel and artists muster their creativity and skill to create the wide gallery of characters dancing during the carnival. Carnival has always been a time when the people reverse social and moral values. Figures of Haitian history: slave, Christian, Native, Voodoo, animist figures blend together into a big catharsis. Haitian carnival as such is also a political gesture and a social critic.”
