Prompt #14: A Father's Love

Jia cradled a carved skull to his chest. As they looked down, the ornate lines drew towards empty sockets which gazed up at him. They thought it looked rueful. Apologetic even. They felt as though it searched their soul for forgiveness, but there was none to be had.

There was nothing Jia hated more, than Ihjia Jheri. Their mother, their torturer, the source of so much that had gone wrong in their world.

But there were few things they treasured as much as her skull, etched with skilled hand and presented as a gift. Vindication. Liberation. A promise that any who harmed them, any who touched them, would become trees. Trees, like her, growing upon their bones.

Through that skull, Jia was given worth. Jia was loved.

They had written a letter. Cruel and scornful, accusing and abrasive. Desperate. Hurt.

But they knew it wasn't true.

They knew that their father had killed for them, and would do so again. They knew that their father would die for them, and his spirit would whisper gentle nothings in their ear. And if their father knew their cruel fate, that they had found themself a waif upon the streets of Ul'dah, the man would have hated himself for ever allowing them to leave.

Izar'a Yhundo's heart was black and ichorous, and foul venom dripped from a vainglorious smile. Jia's heart was no different. But from the waters, Jia was given unto the man, and the man had eagerly accepted the child as their own.

The skull was testament.

There was only one greater love, than a Father's for their child.

There was only one greater pain, than seeing your child hurt.

Which is why Jia understood, they could never tell their father of their fate. Everything was fine. Jia was doing wonderful.

They penned a letter. Encouraging and warm.

The only thing greater, was the love a child had in turn.

The only thing greater, was the pain of knowing the reason your father wept, was your fault.
