Yes. Yes they fucking have!
I remember when immigration and refugees in the UK weren't automatically treated like shit. I remember being able to interact with other people and see others interact and there wasn't this... Subconscious expectation of violence or conflict because they were Other or because the News Made Them Seem Dangerous.
I also remember when that mindset began to change.
I never got the chance to experience university under a Labour government, my whole experience has been Tory influenced and it showed with how students were treated. Intentionally or otherwise.
I live in a town with a large percentage of minority ethnicities in it. I live in a town with refugees and migrants and they are always the first blamed on Facebook groups for the town. They're always inferred to be Dangerous.
But on my road, there's a house with several men who aren't native to the UK and they're honestly lovely. Sure, they've played music loud at night sometimes, but a shout out the window to quieten down solves that. They don't drive like reckless fools. They are polite to me and I've given them a Christmas card every year because its just polite. Always with a "seasons greetings" instead of a "merry Christmas".
I'm the only one on the road that does that btw. The rest of the road ignores them, avoids them, are assholes with where and how they park etc.
And honestly... My town is a good town. Its got problems sure, but the ones that cause the problems aren't migrants, refugees, or immigrants. The Tory government tries to make out that these people Are The Source Of Problems, are Stealing Good British Jobs, are Invading Our Shores...
That's all bullshit.
The things these people flee are our fault. We caused so many problems in the middle east, in other areas of the world. We exploited and still exploit places where these people came from.
They come to the UK for better, for safety.
And the Tory government makes them into monsters, thieves, criminals, because they would rather take take take everything than ever offer a hand out to help.
So yeah. Fuck the Tories. Fuck this hatred and fear mongering of people who aren't Right Kind Of People For Us Brits. Fuck it all.
I trust the immigrants in my town way more than I do the native Brits. Because at least one group aren't violent bigots who go and rally outside a hotel and set police vans on fire and try to harm people trying to just live.
Yeah...
Has the government created a hostile environment for asylum seekers?
Hmm if only there was some indication…you’d probably have to dig deep through tons of British government policy documentation.
Or…perhaps just look at the fucking name of the Home Office policy.
