im gonna be so annoying for a moment but i NEED to talk about deh

i saw a tiktok awhile back talking about how the context for deh ruins the songs, like how for forever is a beautiful song until you remember its just a bunch of lies.

but like. thats whats beautiful and heartbreaking about for forever.

yes, evan is lying to this family about their dead son, but hes also rewriting the day he tried to kill himself.

the song starts because the murphys are fighting, and evan just wants it to stop, and he wants to help. but if you watch the actual musical, you see as he goes from singing to the family, to standing at the front of the stage and singing into the audience. his lies became a daydream. hes imagining a reality where he had a friend with him, who came to get him after he tried to kill himself, instead of what actually happened, where he didnt have anyone and he had to get up himself and ask his boss to drive him to the hospital. instead of waiting for someone to come and get him, in his story, someone does come to get him. right away.

its a beautiful and tragic song and its so much more than just "a boy lying about a familys dead son"
