Agent H's Book Reactions
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Troubled Percy Jackson is in for the quest of a lifetime when he discovers that the Greek Gods are alive and that he has been accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt.
-So I saw the Lightning Thief musical a few weeks back, and it was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. 11/10 would recommend. That plus the fact I couldn’t concentrate on anything long enough to read made me pick up this book for a reread!
-Wow, I’ve really read this book so many times that I have it all basically memorized
-Percy Jackson is the greatest character ever and I think honestly my all-time favorite (Sorry, Daisy). I've been trying to understand his mass appeal. He’s a complete underdog, the whole world is literally against him at every turn. But he’s still a good person, sassy and impertinent, but honorable and brave. And over the course of the series we see him become a hero (whether he wants to or not) and earn the respect and love that he’s craved his whole life. It’s a powerful story. (Also Chris McCarrell absolutely kills it as an actor on a level that I can’t begin to describe)
-I love the development of Percy’s character in this book with him coming to peace with who he is and that making him stronger.
-I love Percy at school and camp because we get all sorts of pointless details about him, like the fact that he sold illegal candy from his dorm lol
-Also, his knowledge of Greek myths is so random/plot-driven. Like you’ve heard of Procrustes but missed the Athena vs Poseidon feud??
-The freakin parallels between Percy and Luke!!!! This literally hurts so much.
-Also I totally didn’t realize that we learn about Thalia so early. Anyone else  wish she had a bigger role in the series?
-Shoutout to Percy being able to fight the minotaur because its raining. And being able to best Luke because he drenched himself in water (btdubs h.c. he totally does this whenever sparring someone tough, and it annoys the others so much.)
-But very important to note: I love that his skills with the sword have nothing to do with being the son of Poseidon. Like there’s so much he’s inherited that makes him powerful, but on top of that he’s just naturally wickedly good at sword-fighting and that’s all him.
-Freaking great scenes include: Ms. Dodds, Percy commanding the toilets, Percy getting claimed, the Tunnel of Love, The Underworld. Jk, just all of it.
-The trio really do have one brain cell between them. They’re so dumb and I love them
-The St. Louis arch is my favorite scene ever and I deeply regret that it’s not in any adaptation. Also, ballsy move to put the Mother of Monsters in one of Percy’s first battles; I’m disappointed that she never comes back!
-The talk with Poseidon is sweet but so awkward haha
-Sally’s story is so much harder to read now being an adult
-J.K. Rowling is so good misdirection and concealing obvious plot points until they become important. Meanwhile Rick is like “Here’s a super obvious clue, but, uh, look, a monster!” But I can’t deride him too much. Even though I read the entire series multiple times, I still watched  2/3 of the play thinking “Why do they keep bringing up Kronos? Is he important?”
-Ughh, I both ship and don’t ship Percabeth. Like I love Perachel first and Annabeth’s depiction in the later books really annoys me. But. They’re. Just. So. Great. Early. On. Uggggghhhh, idk
