HIIII HOPE YOU'RE DOING GOOD
Recently I rewatched Hunter x Hunter and in it there a character, Shaiapouf, that can multiply himself in like super super tiny versions of himself. And so, I thought what if Foul Legacy could do the same !! You always see him in is big cuddly form but when you got out and he can't accompagny you he would create these tiny version of Foul Legacy to follow you everywhere and keep an eye on you. Or when he just want to have some fun and have a giant hide and seek party, you finding every mini Foul Legacy and being rewared with big cuddle session <3
-nightly thoughts anon
i saw "hide and seek" and a lightbulb went off in my brain
it starts small- literally. you'll find tiny Legacies puttering around the house, curled up on the counter or hanging from the shelves. they always cheep happily at you, flying down to rest on your shoulders and head. they follow you around the house, tiny guardians, usually when Legacy proper is down for a nap or out hunting, and usually there's only three at most, the perfect amount to fit in your lap. the tiny Legacies climb your legs and snuggle into your arms, letting out little peeps and squeaks as they bump their heads against your arms, purrs no more than soft buzzing sounds in your ears. of course, they vanish once Legacy himself wakes up, yawning and ambling over to nudge his face against your shoulder and scoop you into his arms, just the opposite of you holding his miniature versions to your chest, and all is calm and well
then you find a little Legacy in your bag at work one day
you freeze, staring at the tiny Abyssal monster curled up amongst your papers, immediately closing the bag when he perks up and cheeps to muffle the sound. with a hush you slowly open it again, holding a finger to your lips as the small Legacy crawls onto your hand and promptly sits down, looking very pleased with himself. needless to say, you're not very amused when you come home that evening, but the tiny Legacies and Foul Legacy are beside themselves with rumbling laughter. they all promise not to hide in your work supplies anymore, but this sparks a new game for them: hide and seek. it's a way for them to greet you on your way home, hiding along the path and occasionally poking their heads out with mischievous chitters. if you find them all, they all cling to you as you're promptly tackled by Legacy once you step through the door, hoisted up and kindly kidnapped for a few hours of snuggling. if not, don't worry! any Legacies you pass will dart after you, clambering onto your shoulders and squishing their heads against your cheek with a proud chirp of triumph

Fic Rec Friday - One Piece (SFW)
I am going to make this a thing. Even if its just me and like 3 people see it lol
Ao3 Edition!
The Wanderer (MaiKusakabe) - Marco isn’t the firstmate of the Whitebeards. He’s never even met them, actually– he’s not even a pirate. But Whitebeard wants him to be one. Badly. // High Contender for my Favorite OP fic I’ve read out of all of them. Im just weak in the knees for reluctant/In-denial!Marco and the entire crew trying to reach out to their (future) eldest brother. Also has Immortal!Marco implications and im LIVING for it
Being Human (MaiKusakabe) - Slave!Marco gets taken in by Whitebeard // Listen yall know im gay for Marco-centric angst but this one really takes me by the lapels and shakes me to pieces ok i am laid low
To Build a Home (endlessblankpages) - ASL pirates get recruited (read: kidnapped) by the Whitebeards as an apology for a misunderstanding and it All Spirals From There // Very well put together, and Completed! Incredible found-family affection and fondness, som brotherly angst, All Good All Good.
wish by spirit and if by yes (midnightluck) - Sabo has his memories. A series of shenanigans of him and Ace just trying to take care of each other even with all their chaos and distance, with the Whitebeards and Koala as unwitting audience. // The exasperation and family affection got me fucked all the way up. Midnightluck consistently has my favorite characterization of Sabo out of everything I’ve read.
Clipped Wings (Beyond_Kailani) - Sabo gives up everything, as long as it means his brother’s live freely. Away from his parents. // Angsty and INCREDIBLE found family trope usage. The mental struggle to do what Sabo thinks is necessary to survive vs live his life freely is A+
Trapped in Eternity (Skyleaf19) - Ace is stuck in a long term time loop and his mental health is really, really suffering from it. // this is an angst MELTING POT and i love it. It recently updated off of hiatus but im so excited about it i literally cant focus enough to read it adefsgrth LOTS of the whitebeards trying to help Ace and Ace struggling to pretend he hates them. fantastic. *chef’s kiss*
Living Dreams (Maikusakabe) - Canon-timeline!Marco wakes up two years in the past. Before Whitebeard died. Before Ace died. Before Thatch died. He doesnt handle it well. // I dont even know where to start this is a bundle of some of my favorite tropes in one completed fic. The angst, the disbelief, the denial– it’s perfect. I’m in love
Inanition (Taizi) - small fic about how Luffy’s body works differently than his crewmates. // Short, and yet I keep coming back to it. It’s unebelievably sweet, and the tension of things left unsaid and suppressed anger out of worry is incredible.
Beginning the Next Dream (RikoJasmine) - Future!Luffy gets reborn as his own uncle, Garp’s kid and Dragon’s little brother. This changes a lot, esp. the ASL future. // Its still sort of in the beginning and already has 50k and my Heart I s2g every chapter i see updated makes me have to take a moment to calm down before I read it. Really worth the read. Very soft and sweet with the family vibes, and Luffy is a Hysterically overpowered child with haki.
Guardian (Petiteneko) - Zoro’s POV for pre-post Dressrosa, and how Law slowly, quietly works through his frankly suicidal revenge plan. Includes lulaw // Im weak for outsider!POV mental health and trauma fics. That’s really all you need to know tbh
Acclimating (Justira) - Luffy may be the outspokenly crazy one, but he hand-picked his crew and the rest of the Strawhats are just as on his bullshit despite what they say. Law is struggling through a very nosy crew. // Similar to the fic above, Law trying to leave himself to his own self-harming tendencies and the Strawhats collectively having None Of It.
Lionheart (cyan96) - Past!Law and Corazon get dumped into canon-timeline!Law’s submarine after a devil fruit incident. Trauma everywhere. // Manages to be funny and heartbreaking at exactly the same time! Lots of deeply buried trauma manifested suddenly and overwhelmingly. Incredible.
The Games (Stormy1x2) - Humorous little fic about the Whitebeard’s participating in a sort of public-sport game, in which Ace volunteers and has a great time throwing shenanigans everywhere. // very cute!! another outsider!POV type as its in Marco’s POV while Ace runs around and is just excited and adorable.
Older Brother’s Insight (Abyssal_one) - short fic about Older-brother!Luffy and Younger-brother!Ace w/ the Whitebeards // short and sweet! Im a sucker for role switch AUs and this one really highlights Luffy’s own eccentric sort of capabilities.
Portgas D. Anne and the War of Shirts (glowingjellyfishtreelights) - Anne just doesnt like shirts. this has nothing to do with anyone else. // it’s Really funny. also incredibly accurate.
Into Flame (Kurgaya) - Phoenix!Zoro, and the art of Not Actually Being Human But Never Saying That. // includes Zolu! Which usually isnt my jam, but im All Over non-human!AUs and this one is incredible. Zoro has three pairs of wings. Three. That’s wicked.
Pardus (ImperialMint) - A devil fruit materializes Ace’s worst fear. Which means he’s returning to the Moby Dick with Gold Roger himself at his heels. // funny, sad, and cute all at once. Cute family affection moments, lots of Ace being emotionally hurt and confused.
Legacy (Anjelle) - Ace died and was sent back, all the way back to when his dad still was a pirate on the Oro Jackson. // Lots of emotional turmoil and childhood trauma neatly tied up with some cathartic mental revaluation ;)
Paperwork of a Phoenix (ventusleone) - Marine!Marco and Marine!Izo happen to meet the Whitebeards during their downtime, every now and then, and, well, its not like theyre on duty. // Recently was completed! Slowburn platonic found-family vibes, a lot of Marco biting off more than he can chew and essentially being adopted in the process.
Tension Headache and Migraine (JuHuaTai) Marco overworks himself and accidentally snaps at his crewmates, including Ace. // Very tense in the beginning and smooths out to something apologetic and softer. Has some nsfw in the end, overall Fanastic lmao
Tomorrow Never Happens (Midnightluck) - Sabo pickpockets the wrong marine and gets caught. Which sucks on a normal day, except this one is huge, and burly, and an admiral, and apparently his grandfather. // humorous and slightly angsty all at once! Another Sabo-Gets-His-Memories-Back-Canon-Divergence type story, because I am simple and predictable and it’s still fantastic.
Blue Moon (MyLadyDay) - Werewolf!Marco protects the forest. It just so happens that (Witch?)Ace does so too. // Has some very quiet vibes I really dig, very calm and makes me think of a deep grey-blue color for some reason. Like Full moonlight through the trees. Very cute
#these arent even... half my favorites#but if i kept going id never stop :/ i have a lot#im gonna just start doing this every so often on a friday bc its Fun and i like mentioning people who make good content#please check them out!#fic rec#op fic rec#one piece#fanfiction#fanfic rec#Portgas D. 100 Random Character Development Questions
057. Has your character ever killed anyone?
Before the conditioning and Trials, Staci had never killed anyone. After the Trials, that list of killings quickly reached a number that Staci doesn’t even know now.
058. What is your character’s idea of a perfect day?
After the events of the game, Staci’s idea of a perfect day is a day where something is accomplished early in the day, but then he can go have a calm rest of the day. He wants a day where he feels useful, loved, and he feels like he isn’t under Jacob’s scrutiny. And yes, this perfect day includes not hearing Jacob’s voice, not hearing Only You, and feeling like his own person.
059. List several phrases your character is fond of uttering. Where did they pick them up?
Pre-game, Staci probably picked up phrases from video games/movies/books he’s fond of. Why? Because it’s just a fun way to learn new fun things to say and also please look at pre-game Staci and say “I bet he’s never quoted Star Wars” because then you are a liar and you’re lying to yourself and you need to stop lying to yourself that’s not good. ANYHOW: After the things in game kick off, Staci is not fond of, but he says: “Train. Hunt. Kill. Sacrifice.” and also including such wordings as “Only You” .
060. What is your character’s attitude toward education and learning?
I headcanon that Staci didn’t pursue the stereotypical post-secondary schooling option of going towards a college and living on campus. Staci, instead, has a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from an online college. He got done pursuing an education after that, as he determined a masters degree was not for him. Staci’s attitude towards education is a mix of neutral-leaning towards ‘fuck this’, merely because he was raised in the US public education system. Staci respects most teachers and their hard work, but he knows public education could be much better.
Also, towards learning, Staci hates learning in classes that make him look dumb. He hates feeling like more of an idiot than he normally does. He also wasn’t one of the top 10 of his class, nor in every single AP class, so his own knowledge and intelligence was downplayed by his fellow students. So, sadly, Staci also has a negative view towards people who are smarter than him.
061. Does your character prefer adventure or safety and security?
Staci loves adventure in a safe place. AKA, once he gets settled in, Staci can’t stay in just one place. He’d want to visit every store and go to every neighborhood and climb every tree. If he knows his surroundings and knows where he is, he loves going on adventures around the town. Hope County is a bit of a rough subject, as he knows how dangerous the county is.
062. What sort of legacy does your character wish to leave behind?
Pre-game, Staci wanted to be remembered as someone who was a helper. He wanted to be remembered as someone that could be counted on and was caring. He wanted to be remembered as someone who was funny and also wanted by others. Now, he wants to be strong. He wants to be respected. He wants to be feared. But at the same time, he doesn’t want that. He wants to be known as himself. He wants to be known as someone besides a soldier, but he’s not sure if he can do that anymore.
He wants to be respected. He wants to be strong. He wants to be remembered. And sometimes? He wants to be remembered as he was, not the monster Jacob was making.
063. How well does your character handle difficult people?
Staci! Gets! So! Shitty! With! Difficult! People! He gets very sarcastic and borderline insulting. The more bullheaded you are, the more bullheaded he is. He’ll get forceful and more annoyed, not good at hiding his temper. He’ll start swearing more, he’ll start rolling his eyes, he’ll get incredibly exasperated. The possibilities are endless!

SO YA GIRL SAW HAMILTON IN CHICAGO 8/17/18
Ok, this is gonna be a long one, sorry! Basically every single thought I had during this performance and afterwards at the stagedoor is under the “Read More”. Enjoy!
@icantthink-ofagoodname @timeandspacelord
Cast:
Hamilton- Miguel Cervantes
Burr- Tommar Wilson
Eliza- Jamila Sabares-Klemm
Angelica- Montego Glover
George Washington- Jonathan Kirkland
Lafayette/Jefferson- Colby Lewis
Hercules Mulligan/James Madison- Ebrin R. Stanley
Laurens/Philip- Jose Ramos
Peggy/Maria Reynolds- Aubin Wise
King George- Andrew Call
Full disclosure- I may or may not have burst into tears when we walked in and I saw the stage for the first time
THIS WAS OUR VIEW OF THE STAGE WE WERE SO CLOSE ALJFDAKFV;KJADFG;AKJ
Act I:
- The theater EXPLODED when Miguel walked onstage for the first time it was incredible
-The ABSOLUTE POWER of “You never learned to take your TIIIIME” in the opening number when the entire company is singing I DIED
-During Aaron Burr Sir, Hamilton seemed so excited to meet Burr??? Like he was trying it play it cool but he was totally freaking out it was adorable
-My Shot was just a m a z i n g. I can’t put it into words I’m sorry
- During Schuyler Sisters, Peggy was t o t a l l y the bored little sister being dragged around by her older siblings it was the cutest thing ever
- Angelica absolutely SLAYED Burr, when she said “I want a revelation” she kinda slapped his cravat thingy around with this piece of paper she was holding (presumably some kind of newsletter)
- In farmer refuted ham and Seabury are always trying to step in front of each other/publicly humiliate each other/shove each other off the block which is really fun to watch
- King George was absolutely HILARIOUS, during the “‘Cause when push, comes to shove, I will kill your friends and family” part he literally said it like “I will KILL YOUR. FRIENDS. AND FAMILY.” I love him
- Beginning of right hand man looks like they’re underwater, the whole “British Admiral Howe’s got troops on the water” part was downright h a u n t i n g
- When Washington says “Hamilton come in, have you met Burr?”, Hamilton and Burr reply like ~college bros~, like “Yes, sir, WE KEEP MEETING!” and did this sort of handshake it was really cute
- Angelica’s first part in satisfied was happening center stage at the end of winters ball, it was so cool
-When Angelica leads Hamilton over to Eliza during Helpless, Hamilton is turned around facing Angelica, then eliza comes up behiind him sort of startling him it was really cute
- And when he says “If it takes fighting a war for us to meet it will have been worth it” and kisses her hand, Eliza looks at Angelica like “LOOK!!! LOOK AT THIS CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING” it was adorable
- The lights during the “rewind” part kept zooming into the middle while everyone rewinds to their part
- I have to say, Montego Glover was just a m a z i ng as Angelica, especially during Satisfied
- During the Story Of Tonight Reprise, Laurens, Lafayette, and Hercules are clearly drunk talking to Hamilton, and in the background some guy is just passed out on the stairs
- Tommar was INCREDIBLE during Wait For It, and at the end he sort of smooths out his coat, takes a deep breath, just sort of calming himself and reminding himself that he needs to... wait for it.
- During the beinning of Stay Alive, Eliza is on the (I guess balcony is the best word for it??) above Hamilton as she sings, almost like she’s speaking directly to him which was amazing
- Hamilton literally said “we have resorted to eating our horses” like “WE!! HAVE RESORTED!! TO EATING!!! OUR HORSES!!!” I love Miguel so much
- Also Miguel looks really good in glasses?? Like really good. Just something I noticed...
-Burr’s “okay so we’re doing this” sounded like a resigned parent talking to a bunch of toddlers
- Washington’s “go home” at the end of Meet ME Inside didn’t sound like an order like it did on the soundtrack, it sounded more like a “Son, you need to go home, this is for your own good”
- Jamila’s voice was A N G E L I C during That Would Be Enough I’m-
- Her “look out world” was kind of whispered to Hamilton it was so cute
- GWashs letter to Ham gets passed around the stage via the ensemble during Guns and Ships which looks awesome
- The sheer POWER in Yorktown you just don’t get on the recording it was incredible
- In what comes next george is very pouty and screams as if he’s throwing a tantrum before stomping offstage
- at “feeling so blue” he looks down at stage, stomps foot, spotlight turns blue
- Dear theodosia is so good my gosh Tommar and Miguel were amazing
- During the last bit of DT Eliza is in the background holding a letter for ham waiting for him to finish
- Tomorrow there’ll be more of us made me cry like always, but even more this time because nothing could prepare me for seeing it live onstage
- When Angelica goes to England she and Eliza stand on the circular thing but ham doesn’t so A goes away from him while E goes towards him which is cool
- For Hams “constitutional convention”, Miguel’s voice goes so high he squeaks and is barely audible/his voice gives out which is really funny/cute
- Again with the POWER for nonstop, it’s just insane
Act II:
- JEFFERSON oh my god he’s so dramatic I love it
- At his entrance he kept making the applause louder whenever he noticed it quieting down
- Madison comes in coughing. Every time.
- Cabinet Battles are so funny, Ham mocks whatever tjeff does
- Also there’s a huuuge height difference between Colby and Miguel which makes it even funnier
- Tjeff, Ham, gwash have hand mics and TJeff gently sets his down when he’s done, and Madison goes to pick it up, then drops it and picks it up with his handkerchief because apparently he’s a germaphobe
- When gwash breaks them up ham hides behind him crouching while taunting tjeff it was hilarious
- In take a break ham is working on one side of turnstile while Eliza and Phillip are on other
- Jose’s Philip rap was adorable??? Like he started off sort of shy, but when Ham goes “What??” after his “you can write rhymes but you can’t write mine” he gets really excited and confident it was adorable
-When Angelica and Eliza are trying to convince Ham to go upstate with them, and Angelica sings “If you take your time, you will make your mark” essentially telling him that he’ll make his mark someday, and at the same time Eliza sings “Look around look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now” essentially telling him he doesn’t need to worry about leaving a legacy, and Hamilton looks at Angelica during that part, which I think means that he was listening to her more than Eliza??? Idk, just a theory
- Angelica’s hair is up for the rest of the show now, has a parasol and slightly different dress??
- Say no to this is So cool so amazing Aubin was amazing as Maria
And James Reynolds is up on the balcony area at the beginning watching this affair happen that was an awesome touch
Ham looks really conflicted/reluctant to hand Reynolds the check
- AUBIN WISE IS A LITERAL GODDESS AND I’M GAY* AS HECK thank you that is all
- Reynolds slaps his leg to tell Maria to come to him, she does but stops and stares at ham for a little bit but follows
- ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENS YOU CAN SEE ALL THE WANT AND CONFLICT IN BURRS FACE ITS SO MUCH LIKE THE CLASSIC DISNEY VILLAIN SONG
- Tjeff hands mic to mads to say France, and Madison said it so d e a d p a n it was great
- Washington on your side starts with just burr and jeff and then mads comes in at his “which I wrote” directed to someone off stage
- At the end Jefferson gives his resignation letter to gwash who reads it before going into one last time
- I know him was so funny, gwash passed king George in between the two songs and gwash was like a foot taller and kg just looked at the audience like ‘what’s this guy doing??’
- He was so genuinely confused the whole song and just sat down off to the side to see the rest unfold
- Adams Admin, george is just laughing/cackling the whole time
- At hams address to Adams, he drops a package of paper a few inches thick on the ground because of course he does
- Hurricane was soooo cool, started off underwater, became eye of hurricane and Miguel was just i n c r e d i b l e during the ‘I wrote my way out of hell/I wrote my way to revolution” part. Actually just for the entire song he was incredible. And the entire performance.
- In Reynolds pamphlet, everyone has a pamphlet and is showing it to each other, george comes down and dances off to the side then in hams face
- BURRRN YOOO SO GOOD SO SAD I CRIED JAMILA WAS INCREDIBLE
- Blow us all away, instead of Phillip going up and talking to eacker politely since he is in the middle of a show, he GOES ON STAGE AND CALLS HIM OUT
- AND THE “ACTORS” ONSTAGE JUST STOP TO WATCH THIS WHOLE THING UNFOLD IT WAS HILARIOUS
- The shooting on 7 catches me by surprise every time no matter what
- Stay Alive was just?? Heart breaking?? Eliza’s scream is REAL I forgot all about it and it just WRECKED me
- Same with all of its quiet uptown honestly I was just a mess
- Jefferson looks so shocked when Madison suggests he work with Hamilton, Burr is so confident throughout this whole song but gets upset when Jefferson tells him to thank Ham for the endorsement and just gets angrier
- In your obedient servant, ensemble members are passing the letters back and forth
- at the 30 years of disagreements line, ham just sends like 10 pages of paper over to burr who’s getting more and more exasperated by the second
- Best of wives best of women—ham covers his paper (probably a letter to Eliza/his will) when Eliza comes over so she doesn’t see it
- Best of wives and best of women: Ham and Eliza were so cute??? I’m dying I love them so much
- World was wide enough—the spotlights look like a target but then turn red when he lifts his gun oh my g o o d n e s s
- Miguel’s “I imagine death” monologue was just PERFECT I cried
And at the beginning of WLWDWTYS, when Jefferson talks about “Hamilton’s financial system is a work of genius, I could undo it if I tried... And I tried.”, he makes the “and I tried” part sound like “YEAH AND I TRIED OKAY GOSH” it was kinda funny now that I think about it
- All of wlwdwtys is just so perfect and when she starts talking about the orphanage she started crying which meant I started crying
- She gasps at the very end and the whole stage is dark except for her and I heard it was because she saw us and saw us telling his story and I just. started. bawling.
(*well I’m actually bi but IM SO GAY you get it)
And then we went to the stagedoor, I GOT MY PLAYBILL SIGNED (!!!!!!!!!) BY MIGUEL, MONTEGO, COLBY, EBRIN, ANDREW, KYLE WEILER (George Eaker), A N D MALLORY MICHAELANN WHO WAS THE BULLET AT THIS PERFORMANCE AND I GOT PICTURES WITH MIGUEL, MONTEGO, AND ANDREW OH MY GOSH I WAS COMPLETELY STARSTRUCK
(blurred out my friends’ faces for privacy reasons)
AND MIGUEL SIGNED A. HAM AS WELL AS HIS OWN NAME OH MY GOSH I’M STILL NOT OVER THIS AND I DON’T THINK I EVER WILL BE CAN YOU TELL
#rhena speaks#no one cares Rhena#Hamilton#I'm dead dying deceasing#Y'ALL DONT UNDERSTAND THIS IS THE ONLY THING I'M GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT FOR LITERAL MONTHS SORRYNOTSORRY#my ugly face#selfie

'Jim & Andy' director on hanging with Jim Carrey: 'I didn't know who Jim was anymore'
Jim Carrey looks back at himself, and Andy Kaufman, in Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond (Photo: Netflix)
Earlier this year, Jim Carrey raised eyebrows when he turned an ordinary red carpet interview into a major metaphysical moment. Speaking with E! News, the former Ace Ventura star questioned the reality of our collective existence, remarking, “There is no me. There’s just things happening.” Nobody knew quite how to react to Carrey’s comments in the moment, but documentary filmmaker Chris Smith understood exactly what the actor was getting at. “Jim is constantly searching and evolving in terms of the way he thinks about his place on this planet at this time,” the director tells Yahoo Entertainment. “Most of us are so consumed with our day-to-day lives that we don’t get the time to step back and reflect. He’s at that point where he’s taking that time, and it leads you into places of self-reflection and trying to figure out what’s meaningful to you.”
Smith was uniquely positioned to decode Carrey’s remarks, having sat with the reclusive actor for an increasingly rare, and remarkably expansive, interview that lasted eight hours over a period of two days. That conversation forms the narrative and thematic spine of the new documentary, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond — Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and was released on Netflix on Nov. 17. As the title indicates, the film explores the period that Carrey spent living inside of legendary comedian Andy Kaufman’s skin for the 1999 Miloš Forman biopic Man on the Moon. And Carrey really did inhabit the role, to the point where he essentially lived as Kaufman — who died in 1984 (or did he?) — even when Forman’s cameras weren’t rolling.
As it turns out, that off-camera performance was captured via behind-the-scenes footage filmed by Kaufman’s girlfriend, Lynne Margulies, as well as his partner in comic crime — and current inhabitant of Kaufman’s Tony Clifton get-up — Bob Zmuda. Unreleased for years, Carrey screened the material for director Spike Jonze, who nominated Smith to mine it for documentary fodder. The resulting film alternates Zmuda and Margulies’s footage with Carrey’s contemporary commentary. “I think when they turned the footage over to me, there was an expectation that the movie would interview multiple people about this experience,” Smith says. “My fear with that approach is that it would limit the movie to being a movie about the making of Man on the Moon. I felt there was an opportunity to make something bigger: not just an analysis of that film, but also an analysis of how that movie affected Jim going forward.” We spoke with Smith about where Carrey is today… and where he may be going next.
Yahoo Entertainment: How much behind-the-scenes footage from the Man on the Moon shoot exists? Chris Smith: There were 100 hours of footage, so we had to be really selective. I turned the material over to my longtime editor, Barry Poltermann, and he did a first pass. Then we worked together to get it down to three and a half hours. That was the footage we worked with in terms of constructing the interview. There’s so much interesting footage that a whole second movie could be made! But I feel like everything that’s supposed to be in there is in this cut.
Jim Carrey stares at his Andy Kaufman reflection in ‘Jim & Andy’ (Photo: Netflix)
We see Miloš Forman expressing a lot of exasperation with his star’s antics in the footage. As a director yourself, do you sympathize with him? Or do you think you’d be more tolerant of Carrey’s behavior? It’s funny, I feel like I would enjoy and embrace the process. Miloš is a brilliant director who I think was very used to being in complete control of every element of his films. Whereas I feel like I’m very fluid in the sense of embracing the world around me. Over time, we did notice that they gained a mutual respect for each other. It felt like Miloš began to care for Andy and Tony and understood how to work with them. A lot of the initial frustration you see in our movie is from the beginning, but as the production went on, you see them working together in an easier way.
Did Carrey perhaps course-correct his behavior because he was aware of how much he was frustrating people? I didn’t see it that way. He was pretty adamant about respecting Andy’s legacy and felt like he should stay the course the whole way though. And as Andy got sick, I think that the temperament and attitude changed.
Prior to Man on the Moon, Carrey had a very well-defined public identity in the ’90s. Since that movie, though, it’s gotten harder to get a sense of who he was. What were your thoughts about his public persona prior to making this movie? That was most attractive thing about doing the movie: I didn’t know who Jim was anymore. I didn’t have a good sense about where he was in his life, and I thought he felt very underexposed in that way. There was a great opportunity there if he was willing to talk about these things. When I started working on this film, a lot of people asked me, “What happened to him? Where is he?” So it was interesting to sit down with him, because you got a sense of where he’s been and what he’s been up to.
How much time did you have with him prior to filming the interview? I didn’t meet him until we sat down to do the interview. There’s an energy that comes from that initial interaction that I like to capture on film as opposed to having a discussion beforehand. We just sat down and started talking. I think he thought the movie was just going to be a reflection on that event. It wasn’t until he saw the first cut that he realized it was much more. I don’t think he even thought about the interview that much. There was something magical about the day we filmed where it was this very open and free dialogue right from the beginning. Of course, we started with the experience of playing Andy and being Andy, but it went in a lot of different directions very quickly.
Did you ever see flashes of Andy come out as you were talking to Carrey? Jim would embody the character at times in terms of a reflection. So you would see glimpses. But it was definitely Jim in the room, and it was a real pleasure to get a sense of where he’s at now, especially from someone who was so articulate about being able to express their thoughts.
Were there any anecdotes from the interview that you had to omit, but gave you insight into who he is now? We shot some amazing footage about Jim and his life that was too tangential to the themes and thesis of the movie we have today. There was a lot of material we filmed that was more biographical, and we ended up not being able to use that because when we would veer away from Man on the Moon too much, those things would be at odds with each other. We wanted to keep everything tied back to his experience with Andy; when it got too far away from that, it started to feel like a different film.

Did he express any guilt or remorse about his actions as Andy? Yeah, I think he even expresses it in the movie. The choices Andy would make were different from the choices he would make. When he was in the wrestling scenes, he’s out of his mind. Andy was provocative and would provoke people and challenge them. I think that Jim definitely has elements of that, but not to the degree that Andy did.
Is there something you personally took away from this experience? My takeaway is that the movie is really a mirror for us to look at ourselves, and think about the goals we set. Here you have somebody saying that he achieved everything he wanted to achieve and was still unhappy. So think about what you’re working towards and don’t just work blindly towards it, because it may not bring you happiness.
Based on what you saw, where do you think Carrey goes now? Does he do another movie like Man on the Moon or does he go back to broad comedy? I think that’s one of the beautiful things about the movie. He’s one with the universe in terms of where he’s at, and is very much open to where things lead him. He talks about how each film was a reflection of where he was in his life at that time. He says in the movie that he’s waiting for the next project that fits where he is currently. I don’t think he’s desperate to make something for the sake of making it. He’s open to the possibilities that come his way.
Given the nature of Man on the Moon and this footage, was there ever a sense that he was playing you a little bit? That maybe he was doing a character? I didn’t feel that way just because spending time with him when we weren’t filming, you could tell he was genuinely in a very thoughtful space. It’s a fair question. From my experience of spending time with him, he feels very much this person at this time. But he’s an incredible actor, so I guess anything’s possible! [Laughs]

Chocolate Box 2018 letter
Requesting (fic for all three):
Black Sails (Miranda Barlow/John Silver)
Jack Irish (Simone Bendtsen/Jack Irish)
Starred Up (Oliver Baumer/Eric Love )
Black Sails
Miranda Barlow/John Silver
I recently fell into this canon head-first and found myself with a special fondness for this ship, although they never really interact in canon at all. I definitely see it as an early seasons ship, not just because Miranda was, you know, alive, but because the early Silver was the ever-scheming trickster with a smile and a smart-allecky comment always up his sleeve, ever ready to lie, cheat, steal, and murder to his best advantage, yet already with glimpses of a capacity to care about people other than himself. What I’m saying is, he was fun to have around in a way the later Silver somewhat lost as the price of his character development.
We know Miranda has an eye for a handsome man. I suspect S1-2 Silver totally would bed the captain’s woman if he thought he could get away with it or it could be a way to manipulate Flint, only Miranda is smart and pragmatic, has a core of pure steel, and can see right through Silver, which I’m convinced she would. Unlike Flint, Miranda has done her grieving and she’s so ready to move on and feel alive again. Not saying that Silver would become another great love of hers, but they could have fun. He’d make her laugh. After years of Flint’s moods, Silver would be so easy to get along with. The sex could be great and not angsty or merely dutiful. He’d inevitably find an angle to play, but then Miranda’s no stranger to maneuvering around and with people, so maybe she’d find that his manipulative ways are half the fun. They might even fall in love for real, though that’s not a requirement, and I definitely don’t think love would be the same as absolute trust in this case. (Also I’d appreciate it if you didn’t make the relationship revolve around their shared fixation on Flint, or focus on Miranda’s angst about Thomas or the legacy of Thomas/Flint. These can be mentioned, but I’d prefer that doesn’t hijack the story.)
Prompts:
-Flint sends Silver to Miranda with a message or on an errand, and thinks nothing more of it (or possibly he wants Miranda’s assessment of how much he can trust the “new cook”). But then Silver and Miranda are intrigued by each other and start finding excuses to see each other again. Bonus points if they orchestrate encounters in a way which allows them both to pretend they don’t actually want to see each other again, it just happened, sometimes things just happen but now that they’re both here they might as well take advantage of this opportunity, etc.
-S2 divergence: James dies at Charles Town, and Miranda lives. Silver may or may not lose a leg. Silver and Miranda have to assume at least temporary leadership of the crew in order to get everyone safely back to Nassau. Do they become pirate co-captains or lady captain and her quartermaster? Do they dissolve the crew and try for a different life? Do they make a play for the Urca gold, after Silver confesses his double-dealing to an angry, grieving Miranda (Jack maybe doesn’t capture the gold, it’s still up for grabs, or if Jack does how does that play out)? I mention lower down I’d prefer no angsty sex for these two, but in this scenario I could see any sex that may happen being, at least at first, angry and angsty, but also conducive to emotional healing.
-Actual witch!Miranda. I mean storybook witch, with a cauldron in which she brews that invulnerability potion for Flint and possibly some broom-flying, rather than a Wiccan or another kind of real witch. Maybe she needs a human participant or human-sourced ingredients for some of her most powerful spells, and since Flint isn’t really comfortable with magic Miranda decides that the new ship’s cook will do, only magic has a way of binding people together more closely than they intended. Or maybe she attempts to bind a familiar, hoping for a cat or a bird, and the magic picks Silver, much to her (and his) initial consternation? Maybe Miranda doesn’t really know what she’s doing, she used to dabble in London but hasn’t tried making a spell in years and has none of her books of magic with her, or she’s heard the crew’s rumors about her and decided to give this whole magic thing a go, and oops it actually works! Either way, there would definitely be snark and “if I give you X for a spell, what’s in it for me?”
-Flint respected and cared about Miranda, but also kept her waiting on the sidelines while he did stuff. Gimme Miranda and Silver at a point where they trust each other, maybe not completely, but enough that they can scheme together, where she is impressed by his quick wits but she’ll also tell him when one of his plans is likely to go wrong in XYZ different ways. Then, obviously, they execute a plan/heist by drawing on their combined skill sets.
-Fucking someone is easy. Sleeping the night through next to that person is hard.
-Speaking of which: sex. With or without plot. In the bed, in the kitchen, in Nassau, on The Walrus when the rest of the crew is on shore-leave, or a stolen moment during the journey to Charles Town. First times, later times. Any position is good, I’ll just mention a couple possibilities: Cunnilingus with a side of mind games. Pegging. Fingering (of either by either). Intense (emotionally and physically) PIV. I could see them both initiating sex and wanting to “direct traffic” at one time or another, both wanting to keep up a front but then being ambushed by actual emotion and vulnerability. Let it be happy and giggly, or passionate, or playful, or unexpectedly tender, or seemingly casual and then very emotional and heartfelt – just please don’t let it be angsty.
-Miranda discovers she likes to get her fingers in Silver’s hair during sex, both gently and not. He likes it too, which is not to say he’ll necessarily admit he likes it.
-Sexual role-play: the demure lady abducted by a wicked pirate, only it turns out the lady’s resistance is symbolic at best. Who gets to play the lady and who the pirate is entirely open. If Miranda’s the lady, I suspect early seasons!Silver’s attempts at being menacing and dominating may make her break character for a giggle – and if Miranda’s the pirate menacing the demure and naïve, er, young gentleman, I’ll just say that I think she should wear Silver’s clothes (after washing them or making him bring a spare set).
Two general points: whatever you end up writing, please don’t kill off Miranda or imply she dies “off-screen.” Let her live to fuck Silver another day. Also, I love Flint/Miranda in all their angsty glory, and I love all the intense, complicated emotion of Flint & Silver and the potential of Flint/Silver. I know I said not to make the fic revolve around Flint’s influence on their lives, but I’m fine with Flint in a walk-on role, if you want to write that. I don’t see him making too big a fuss, Miranda definitely treats her brief affair with the pastor as her business and her business alone – I can see Flint being exasperated that Silver hanging around Miranda is now a thing, or suspicious of Silver’s intentions but also trusting Miranda to handle it.
Jack Irish
Simone Bendtsen/Jack Irish
I enjoyed this show a lot: how often and unexpectedly funny it was, how absorbing the mysteries were even when I didn’t buy every plot twist, how the canon treated complicated adult relationships as complicated and adult, how everyone wound up in a better place by the end than they’d been at the start but this didn’t always (or almost ever, really) mean a conventional HEA. I liked the intricate plots and all the Australian details of the setting, but I loved especially the character interactions and the ensemble cast, and these two reminded me of couples from old screwball comedies in how they played off each other.
Jack: dryly funny, tragic backstory but not overburdened with it, bit of a lone wolf but also with a lot of very different, good people in his life, sometimes his own worst enemy, not an alpha male at all and that’s just fine. And Simone, oh I loved Simone: smart, snarky, motor-mouthed, independent but also wanting to be taken care of a bit, somewhat socially awkward, hypercompetent, self-deprecating. I started shipping them right at the start (the “do you always talk this fast?” “do you always listen this slow?” exchange), loved how they keep needling and bantering easily, how during the time skip between seasons they become super close and rely on each other as both coworkers and friends. I have different degrees of tolerance for their canon relationships, so feel free to ignore or handwave those, and anyway: Jack knows Simone well enough to buy her a vintage Han Solo figurine in original packaging as a wedding present – and then promptly gets mistaken for her new husband!
Prompts:
-Casefic! Between Simone’s investigative skills and Jack’s willingness to get beaten up a lot and his sorta action skills, there’s nothing they can’t solve.
-Jack brings Simone along on a stakeout or a road-trip to run down money Harry’s owed. There’s banter. Lots of banter. And possibly falling asleep in the car.
-Simone gets to interact with Cam and Harry, or with the old codgers at Jack’s local. Whether she and Jack are together or not, everyone can see it.
-Show me them growing close during the time between seasons: how they went from him calling her always “Miss Bendtsen” and teasing her about her dating profile handle to her wanting him at her wedding.
-Canon divergence: Jack goes to Manila to investigate the Holman-Dang Bank and brings Simone along, or calls/Skypes her for snarky consultations and finally asks her to fly out and help him. Danger, thrills, bringing down an international crime syndicate, and possibly sex ensue. Bonus points if they work together with Marek/Orton, he of the dry wit and the extensive local knowledge. Or Jack and Simone take part in some handwavy local ritual and wake up married.
-Takeout and movie night. There is banter, of course. All the banter. And probably some whiskey too.
-Instead of the council forcing Jack to move his horse out of his yard, he enlists Simone in helping him smuggle the horse (to a paddock on Melbourne’s outskirts, or another temporary shelter as ill-suited as Jack’s yard had been) in the middle of the night. If one or both of them end up riding the horse, all the better.
-Their first time. Especially if it’s a little awkward, and a little funny, and maybe they had a few drinks to psyche themselves up, and maybe they’re still figuring out whether they’re better as friends or they have real potential as a couple – and it ends up being enjoyable despite their hang-ups and insecurities.
Starred Up
Oliver Baumer/Eric Love
I liked what the movie did with the father-son relationship and its influence on both men’s character development – but I really wish they hadn’t got Oliver out of the action before the story’s climax (not like that!). The final denouement with Love father and Love son was great, as was the hint at the end that Eric learned something in anger-management group and has a support network that will help him a lot, but I would have wanted to see more of the intriguing dynamic between Eric and Oliver - the intelligent, semi-feral, yet not-incorrigible, young thug and the educated, dedicated, kind yet aware of his own potential for violence, slightly older counselor. I would love to see Oliver return to holding his group in prison, so the two of them can interact more, either in the movie’s immediate aftermath or years down the line (it was hinted that Eric will be serving a very long sentence).
Prompts:
-More scenes from anger management or the free-flowing conversations in group, either with the other men present (because I loved their group dynamics, their training in anger management techniques, and their ribald, un-PC, yet constructive talk) or in a one-on-one session between Oliver and Eric.
-An oblique or open-but-undramatic admission of love/investment/affection/desire, or just a declaration that they both know there’s something there but they probably don’t want to name it, get into the details, and it’s too frustrating given their circumstances, but they both know and accept it’s there - well, I would love that.
-Dirty talk: used for arousal, as a defense mechanism, as a form of flirtation. Eric using slurs to assert dominance, and Oliver not letting him hide behind foul language, when he can use other kinds of colorful language to express actual emotion and sexual interest. There could definitely be some verbal taunting/flirting about who wants/is eager to do what or is good at doing something. There may be some sniping comments about logistics and (lack of) condoms and barebacking and what men get up to in prison. There probably wouldn’t be deep discussions about sexual identity.
-An emergency in the prison requires a lock-down, so Oliver gets temporarily stuck in Eric’s cell or another room with only Eric for company. Sex ensues. It could be a few months after the movie, or it could be after Eric has had some time to become a fully mature adult. Eric might seem like the logical initiator and/or dominant partner, but then Oliver might (or might not!) surprise him and is definitely the one more in touch with himself.
-Eric is eventually (handwave it so he gets early parole or make it happen years and years down the line) released and crashes with Oliver while he adjusts to the outside world, and there’s awkwardness, probably some male chest-thumping, and eventually fucking. The sex could be pretty rough or go-for-it-no-frills, yet enthusiastic and eager and unexpectedly tender (even if either or both don’t want to admit it).
-A progression/escalation of sexual contact over a series of encounters, possibly starting with just words or masturbation (of oneself or the other or mutual) or some other form of arousal, to blowjobs and who already knows how to give them and who expects them as a given and who learns how to give them, and ending in full-on screwing. Or any one of these individual moments, really!
-At some point, probably not their first time but when they’re used to each other and have a chance to take their time and have real privacy, Oliver ignores Eric’s come-on-already and goes super slow, to make Eric fall apart with pleasure *and* have an actual emotional reaction to sexual intimacy, which he wouldn’t be able to brush off as just of the moment.
LIKES:
I love pre-canon, canon, post-canon, canon-divergent, and “missing scene from canon” stories. I love character-driven and plot-driven stories equally, and I love fics which mix humor and angst/serious business when appropriate for the canon.
I love irony, snark, 5+1 stories, long fic and short fic, bittersweet endings, hopeful endings, happy endings, unhappy-but-stoic (in terms of where the characters end up) endings, ambiguous or and-the-adventure-continues endings, canon-fitting humor, characters who are their own worst enemies as well as those who learn to get over themselves, characters with conflicting values which may or may not be reconciled/resolved in a believable and IC way, characters who treat each other with respect and as equals even if they hate/annoy/can’t stand/love to dislike each other.
I love workplace stories (this can mean anything from an office/procedural setting to anything that revolves around the canon world in which the characters live) in which the characters are competent and dedicated to the job, and while they may not be exactly friends and they may well irritate one another, they still manage to rub along to get the job done and maybe even grow to care about one another (much to their surprise and sometimes reluctance/discomfort). For friendship and family dynamics, I love to see how the many layers long relationships of this kind can play out: the recrimination, the regrets, the humor, the love.
In terms of ship dynamics, I love (where it fits the characters) banter, competitiveness or antagonism or a degree of distrust shading into attraction (this tension need not be resolved), bickering yet loving couples, faithfulness, characters who are serious about their romantic interests, characters who think they are much better at flirtation than they actually are, characters forced to work together only to prove much more compatible than they initially assumed, fics which mix an exploration of characters’ professional and everyday lives with shipping.
I don’t have any very specific likes for smut, other than smut fitting the characters – show me how their canon dynamics spill over into the bedroom (or other place of congress). Let me hear their canon voices during the sex, either in POV narration or in dialogue.
Oral, vaginal, anal, manual (ifyouknowwhatImean) – it’s all good, go as veiled or as explicit as you like. Things which are all great: kissing, foreplay, seduction, a bit of sexual teasing, daring each other to go further, asking one’s partner to verbalize their desires.
I like sexual scenarios that subvert expectations a little and surprise the characters themselves (e.g., the person who’s usually quiet or more passive taking charge, the more aggressive person goes with it possibly snarking or commenting on it as long as they can). I also like sexual scenarios that contain an element of competition, antagonism, people having to overcome their own inhibitions or insecurity by just bulling through to where they can let themselves enjoy it, oh-god-this-is-a-bad-idea-but-we’re-going-for-it, I-hate-that-I-want-you-oooh-don’t-stop. Not wanting to admit feelings or show vulnerability except oops it happens anyway, whether the characters acknowledge it or not, or just people getting way more into it or being more affected by it than they thought they would. Also situations in which people have been acting competitive or fine-fine-shut-up-already and then jump into the sex with great enthusiasm even if still snarking. Also situations in which people who’ve wanted each other for a long time but couldn’t admit or act on it for reasons – and maybe weren’t sure or wouldn’t let themselves believe the desire was mutual – finally get a chance to do it, and it’s intense and emotional.
DNWs:
Hard kinks, MPREG, A/B/O, knotting, D/s, incest, genderswap and genderbent characters, ace/aro/trans/non-binary headcanons, non-con and dub-con, torture and abuse, dwelling on bodily fluids (mentions of gore and come are fine, but no loving detail please), vore, underage, toilet humor, character bashing, soulmates and soul marks, major character death (unless it’s canon – Miranda dying is the exception, in fic she lives!), pregnancy and children as the lynchpin of the story, characters agonizing over/analyzing/dwelling on their or others’ sexuality as if it’s the sum total of their existence, secondary characters acting like shipping the main pair is their be all and end all, teeth-rotting fluff and schmoop, issuefic, fic written in the first or second person, holiday setting or theme, fics which revolve around weddings and birthdays, AUs which have nothing to do with canon (cop characters working in a coffee shop, high-school janitor characters in space, etc.)
