"This is one of those events I couldn't miss, it was something big I guess" Not only because he was friends with Phoebe's brothers, Jai had to admit that he had aroused a little curiosity in him, to know what she had been up to, mere curiosity of course. Plus Irvin had told him that the Greys' mother had asked him to invite Jai. He considered that it wouldn't be very polite to reject Irvin's mother as much as he would rather be anywhere but there. Before speaking to Phoebe he wanted to die of boredom but now it was not that bad "More than I'd like to admit and I can tell you it's fucking awkward, most of them aren't as subtle as they think" Some mothers took liberties and Jai was sure his daughters didn't know what their mothers were doing. The most subtle ones invited him to dinner so that he could meet his daughters and the most overwhelming ones directly told him things like his daughters were single and the grandchildren that Jai could give them would be adorable. He wanted to run away when they mentioned imaginary children. It was a mystery because some thought that he would say yes to those proposals "No" He laughed slightly without being able to avoid it "I'm not married" Not because he hadn't had offers, but because Jai simply wasn't interested. He had never been with someone that he cared enough to even consider tying himself to that person long term. Most of the women-and some men-interested in him just wanted money from him or to connect them with the most famous or popular part of their family by getting them an audition or something similar.
"I think it's the benefit of being the eldest son? I just don't show up unless it's something important" It's not like his parents could tell him anything either - even if they tried - because Jai now lived alone and didn't depend on them. In fact, his family depended on Jai more than he did on them. If Jai took a step back, none of his siblings would want to take command of the entire production company. It wasn't like he was going to do that, he was fine with having to take care of the family business but he wouldn't mind having to leave either. His parents were to organize many social gatherings or parties, anything was a good excuse to have a party. Jai preferred to stay at home or do something else. His party time had been left behind in college and he didn't think his liver could keep up with Giaan and Anjali's partying rhythm either. He liked to have fun, sure, but he couldn't handle partying all the time.
"It can be incredibly annoying and irritating I have to admit, but it's the other side of the scale in friendship." He shrugged. Irvin was annoying and a jerk most of the time? He sure, but he was also an incredibly loyal friend who had always been there for Jai when he needed support. Although he was a transparent person, Jai believed that he was hiding some flirt from her because to begin with, he hadn't even seen his friend's hair since he had arrived. "I don't know, I don't think I expect much from my job? It's quite boring if I'm honest" Jai's life was quite… calm, maybe boring would be the word that some would use. Not that he had more of a social life than necessary. "The problem is that my siblings act like kids, they love to be all over the gossip pages" Anjali and Giaan were more adept at being in the press than Jai or Nisha, his other sister, had ever been.
Amusement graced her features, a small nod accompanying the smile forming on her lips. "Ah, so can I assume I'm special then? That you didn't avoid my party?" She was obviously teasing, surprising herself for quickly jumping a few steps in the 'getting to know someone' handbook. Phoebe wasn't too surprised he agreed with her. Jai stood out in the crowd, and now she knew why. Boring and pointless were strong adjectives, but she'd spent years away from all of this. Her aunt and her family had retired from the Grey circus, as her brother often referred to it. So, her time away from home - it kind of had the opposite effect from what her parents were hoping for. Her parents were hoping that sending her away meant preparing her to come back a full-fledged member of the family. Happy to comply and ready to take on the plan laid out for her. Her aunt still provided insight, and did give her the overview of her family..what Phoebe's place looked like in it. She supposed the difference was that she only informed her, and didn't shove it down her throat. Phoebe often wondered what her aunt had told them, to convince them to send her there rather than her grandparents or another relative. Still, she was grateful. Brows knitted together, her frown quickly making an appearance. The thought disgusted her, even if she knew that this wasn't a far possibility for her either. She hoped for something else, to find someone she picked, rather than everyone else picking for her. "You've had that happen to you a lot? Being offered the girl, marriage..all that?" Unsure how else to phrase it. "But you're not..married, are you?" Or did she completely miss a wedding band somewhere?
Phoebe raised an eyebrow, intrigued as he spoke of his family. Their name was familiar. Their families knew each other, she remembered this from her mom's quizzes on who was attending tonight. But, she also knew a lot of their familiarity came from Irvin's friendship with Jai, rather than their parents interacting. "I bet, fancy and loud make an interesting combo. Really?" Now, she was even more intrigued. How did Jai manage to avoid all these events, these compromises? "You'll have to teach me your tricks then, how you manage to skip all of these."
"Of course," she said, a small chuckle escaping her. "Fair enough, Irv is god to keep around. He could probably talk his way out of jail time if needed." Jai probably knew that better than she did. How much her oldest brother had grown up, how many crazy antics he had accumulated in this time. Surely, Jai had all sorts of interesting stories. "That's nice...right?" she didn't know if that should be enthusiastic or not. "Or would you rather be doing something else?" Phoebe would be happy for him, if that's what he genuinely wanted - to be involved in that family business. She let out a laugh, shaking her head. "Younger siblings, am I right?" Another terrible joke, knowing she was the youngest in her family. "Sucks you're stuck with the responsibility though." That must be how Irvin felt, always looking after his siblings so they didn't blow everything up too. Maybe that's why he gave it up.
