read two insane wincest fics in the last two days and honestly i have no idea how to move on from them. they've bored into my skull like worms and i will not get over them any time soon

selfishly, i wish there had been more actual mind control in the fic because i have problems in my brain and the horrors attack me nightly, but otherwise this is just really great. i love the focus on sam's emotions and the fear and horror of what he's been doing. the paragraph spacing is all kinds of wonky and honestly really off-putting, but once i pushed past that, it was an awesome read.

deadass i think this author lives in my brain. i can't believe they wrote my exact kink, wrote it well, and gave it a satisfying ending all in one fic. i love how they executed their incest headcanons and developed the background for their relationship, and jesus christ i can't even stress how good this soulbond is. i can't be normal after reading this. author has a tendency to skip over words on occasion, but otherwise it's really well written and i'm so impressed with it.

Annnyway, here’s how I sorted them, and notes on certain ones where I have something to say. S: frequently and actively seek out in fic

canon divergence is my bread and butter babey, I love seeing how an author would take a story in a different direction starting from a specific point. If it’s done well, it really feels like an interesting alternate possibility of the characters/world as they are in canon and I looove that. 

slow burn is something I constantly crave with ships lol. That being said I am picky, and I think the ones where it’s been like 100k+ words and they haven’t even realized that they like each other is kind of a drag. At a certain point it just gets frustrating. But I always want a good organic and well paced slow burn, because seeing two characters realizing they’re in love is... it’s so good 😭

OK SO crossovers lmao. I have a ridiculous and constant craving for stupid crossovers, but at the same time I want them to be good. Which is.... a rare thing to find, to say the least lmao. Doesn’t stop me from craving them or seeking them out!! I want them!!!

If ‘feelings realization’ was a category, it would be here lol. I’m such a sucker for it.

A: don’t always ‘em seek out, but I usually like these things whenever I come across them

I love friends to lovers but with the caveat that I find childhood friends to lovers usually..... kind of boring lmao. But when characters form a strong, trusting friendship, and that slowly changes into romance? yes please.

I like a good gen fic, especially in fandoms where I’m not super into any of the ships. It’s a great opportunity for character exploration without the expectation of romance, or for a good plotty or adventure fic that explores the setting!

fix it fics are here instead of in S because while I like them in theory, sometimes a fix it fic ends up wrapping everything up way too easily and neatly, which sort of takes the appeal out of it for me. But I like it as an interesting extention of canon divergence, where the main tragedy is diverted, but then other interesting conflicts pop up. 

if humor is done well, I love it! especially for fandoms in which the source material is funny lol. I always have a hard time reading serious, angsty fic when the source material is a comedy.

B: mostly neutral. sometimes these things are exactly what I want, and sometimes they don’t interest me at all. very dependent on fandom and execution

established relationship can be really cute and sweet, and I can really enjoy it if I’m in the mood for it, but I like seeing the characters get together too much for this fic trope to be a staple.

I’m gonna put fake relationship and mutual pining together because I have similar feelings about them. When they’re done well, they can be really fun, but they also run the danger of being too frustratingly contrived.

angst and fluff kind of go hand in hand, because while I like both, I also need both for it to work lmao. A fic that’s just angst can be kind of much, and veer into melodrama, but a fic that’s just fluff is usually kind of boring for me lol. Together, they mutually elevate each other imo.

crack fics are usually just really silly and fun-- I probably won’t actually get invested (unless it’s a crack treated seriously premise, which is an entirely different ballgame) but they can be good for a chuckle.

miscommunication fics are often terrible, but when they’re done good, they can be really good. Ok I’m mostly thinking of griffguts lmao, easily the best miscommunication plot I can think of.

C: I don’t hate these things, but they don’t particularly interest me.

PornWithoutPlot is fine, sometimes, but these days I just find myself getting bored and skimming through it. (obviously, there are exceptions lol)

a/b/o is something I generally filter out, not because I inherently have a problem with it-- I’ve certainly read good ones with interesting world building-- but more often than not it just comes across as gender essentialism repackaged with wolf dicks. so.

D: I actively and frequently filter these tags out

Uh yeah, nothing to say here, other than if ‘modern AU’ was a category, it’d be here too lmao.

All this being said, these are all dependent on execution, and certain fandoms/ships (cough griffguts cough) will be a total exception for a lot of the D tier tropes lmao. Everything is relative.
