The Narkina-5 arc is about Cassian and Kino learning that they're going to die there and then radicalizing the rest of their level. They have to learn because they're still buying into the idea that they can "earn" their freedom. Not this guy. This guy knew he was on a one way ride into that place. He probably heard Kino's speech and was one of the first to test the floor on his level.
