No matter what Hamish said, and no matter what Esme said when she arrived, Belle could not shake the dread that had settled over her. She almost missed the anxiety of believing she was followed. The certainty of knowing—assuming incorrectly, Hamish would have said—that someone was after her and she couldn’t do anything but wait might break her.

For the second night in a row, she didn’t sleep much, alert for doors or windows opening. Once the sun came up, she dozed for a few hours, but she knew she looked like she’d been gently electrocuted when she wandered down for breakfast in sweatpants and her windbreaker.

“Lacey!” Esme sat a plate of eggs in front of Rory with a clatter, then rushed over to guide Belle to the table. Maybe she looked more electrocuted than she thought.

this made me gigggleee <3 i get asked this sm and honestly i'm constantly writing it!! i've usually already started the next chapter while the one i've just finished is still being beta read LOL, i have to write for at least a few hours every day or i start feeling a little insane :') i started ch10 the moment i finished ch9 last week... yesterday i wrote for 12 hours straight and i'm now at 17k with no end in sight so >:) it's gonna be the longest one yet oops but it's an important one so ig it can't be helped lol. anyway small sneak peek! <3

and a general thank u for the love on the last chapter oh my goddd. the way my days are lit up by the kind words y'all take the time to leave for me to read :')) i rly do wish i could somehow bottle the feelings up and give em out so i can adequately express how much gratitude i feel, but just know it means the world to me and spurs me on so much and i'm v v aware of how lucky i am <33

ahh eps 6-7 got me so deeply invested in the show that ep 8's potential writing issues cropping up is making me so nervous and the discourse around it on twt is aggravating me a bit.

they had to fit over 100 chapters of manhwa into 12 episodes of television so the plot is progressing at breakneck speed out of necessity, but the way that jeongnyeon got pushed to her breaking point so quickly and through juran and hyerang is a little bit concerning. in the manhwa there was her mother's singing teacher who told her she could never master pansori and that was why she felt so destroyed. but juran making her insecure about her acting and hyerang tricking her into pushing herself too hard paints all 3 characters in a light that has room for negative audience reactions.

i think that they made juran too sweet and nice and her being pushed into being cruel to both jeongnyeon (distancing herself from the panic of sudden and intense attraction that might threaten her career) and yeongseo (accidentally belittling her and making her second place because she's the safer choice) is quite an interesting character choice that makes her feel more real. and ultimately she's not going to get very much flack for the choice even tho the way she talked to jeongnyeon was unnecessary.

but hyerang directly pushing jeongnyeon to losing her voice forever is rly concerning because her depiction was so sympathetic so far. but by escalating the sabotage to like physical harm her character is becoming more like a caricature of jealousy than a woman with clear priorities because she's living an impossible life she needs to protect. she and okgyeong are a lesbian couple living together and raising a child and they're celebrity figures with successful careers. the show is deeply feminist so i rly hope that there's some kind of redemption or reveal to rehabilitate her sense of morality to the audience.

the biggest narrative problem rly is that jeongnyeon can now be read as foolish and stubborn and greedy by wanting a big role so much she would destroy herself for it when she just joined the troupe a few months ago. in the manhwa she didn't get support from anyone but buyong who believed in her and supported her at every turn without fail. juran was her friend but more quiet and reserved, director sobok never stepped in for her and was usually annoyed at her, okgyeong was very aloof and had almost no relationship with her. she learned the lessons she needed on her own and improved on her own. and following that trend is what got her to push herself over the edge. in the drama she's supported by everyone in the troupe so it's obvious that she would learn and improve quickly, and it's even ungrateful and unreasonable that she would ruin her own voice out of fear of losing a competition that she shouldn't even want that bad. i genuinely don't know what's going to happen in the next episode with the way they have it set up right now, i'm genuinely nervous because the adaptation has been so excellent up until this point and there's so much at risk rn.

The realness, the angst, the vulnerability, the raw emotions, the yearning, the mutual pinning got me crying screaming kicking my feet! THANK YOU TRULY. Lastly I just wanted to ask that do you write a chapter at a time and see where the story takes you or do you write couple chapters ahead or have you already finished writing the series? wrt my writing process, i start every series with a very loose plot outline and usually write each chapter as i go. for home before dark though, i had the first three parts done before posting anything because i wanted to get all my ideas out and was v determined to get the backstory out slowly instead of dumping it all in the first part. i usually stick to the biggest plot points i outlined but all my series so far have dramatically deviated from my original outline bc the story/characters ran away from me and did what they wanted to lol 😋 i also get rly inspired by comments and love to add little scenes to incorporate ideas readers share with me if they fit with the vision i have for the story 🥰 my original idea for watch and learn did not have rafe yearning nearly as much as he was but when readers were like “make him suffer” i was like bet 🙂‍↕️

23. Is writing the beginning, middle, or end of the story easiest? Hardest?

endings are definitely hardest for me. i think i'm good at them, but i find them the hardest. cuz usually when i have an idea it's more like the start of a story and i just have to see where it goes. im rly proud of the ending of my 5+1 fic though. i was anxious abt that cuz i was like omg this was 5 chapters of build up i better make it good but i'm really fucking proud of how i ended it i think its so gosh darn cute. heheh ^_^♡☆~!

I just find funny that apparently everybody got to JR and SIH at some point and I just took a look at the drawing style and noped out of it XD I got into yaoi first by getting into slash drarry fic, and then realizing there was manga (which I was just getting into) (which included reading everything clamp bc I got into manga looking for the true ending of trc anime) which went into the themes. So I bet I read TB and X before much else xD But I was already heading down into Tom riddle fics so like, fic was my fall into dark angsty and manga my enabler. I remember vividly kuroshitsuji, which isn't a bl by any means but has the aesthetics and dark tone. Also kaze to ki no uta, the whole 12 chapters there were translated back then. More like I keep getting into stories with bl than bl stories per se. Old shojo is where is at.

But JR season 1 aired in 2008, SIH in 2011 I think so that type of BL was crazy popular back in the day. In 2012 or 2013 it was the first BL I stumbled upon so...

Honestly the earlier you get into clamp (usually via trc -> xxxholic - > tb/x pipeline), the sooner you start craving more complexity in works and generally portal of relationships in fiction (even non romantic relationships). And angst usually enables that bc when everything is sweet and fluffy there's only as much depth as you can get into. Cuz at the end of the day, humans are complex beings, emotions aren't always rational nor 'pure'. We all have flaws which are hard to get over, hence reading works about deeply flawed characters can feel cathartic (like Kuroshituji as you mentioned; I'd rather take deeply messed up and flawed main characters like Ciel than 10 shonen protags)

I've heard of kaze to ki no uta as a classic but never actually read it. If it's just 12 chaps long then I rly ought to pick it up when I have time. And complete agree on preferring stories that happen to be BL over BL stories, I'm like that too. Perhaps that's why animes like YOI or Banana fish were far better received than your typical BL stories

It’s your classic “nobody could fix Bill so they pawn him off on Mabel” but it’s a contemporary tale set 12 years after the original show. None of the chapters are done yet lol so I just picked out random shit from some of them to share😖

Bits from the chapter where Mabel, after having been handed custody of Bill during a heated negotiations session with the Axolotl, has now recruited him to host live sales for the Mystery Shack gift shop and he eats rocks on Instagram for views

Stan’s jaw dropped, and he couldn’t maintain his inside voice anymore. “What the fuck? Mabel!”

“Just ignore it. This is my life now.”

Stan scowled at her blasé response. “You’re just letting him do whatever he wants now?! Mabel, he’s gonna use that setup to recruit freaks for his cult!”

“No, no. It’s chill. I’ve got him doing live sales on Instagram.”

As if on cue, the devil put away his cosmetics and pressed a few buttons on the phone, resuming his work. “Ok, I’m back. Remember buy two get one half off on the spheres….no, no we don’t offer that.” There was another pause as he furrowed his brow at the comments. “Honestly, Catharine Bianchi, I’m going to send a puma to tear your flesh. How many times do I gotta repeat myself? I don’t care if your an influencer, this is a business.” Another pause, this time the beast brought a gloved hand to his face in frustration. “Your entire life is a joke and you’ll never find love! Ok banned. Sorry my beautiful people.” He picked up a pyrite sphere from the table. “Very fine mineral specimen here, it’s 35. Who’s takin it?… Marlene you still here?”

Upon witnessing this spectacle, Stan made Mabel an offer. “Want me to punch him to death again?”

“No, that’s ok.”

Bits from the chapter where The Pines find out Bill has a keen sense of smell and Stan wants to use it to make money by selling shitty non FDA approved perfumes (spoilers everyone gets a rash from it, total disaster idk maybe someone will drink it and die):

“I could tell it’s him because of the smell.”

Mabel looked perplexed and slightly disgusted, so he felt the need to explain.

“See, because my kind can’t typically see so good, we’re usually blessed with a keen sense of smell to help make up for it.”

“Ohhh! Is your sense of smell like a dog, then?”

“No, maybe like… a dog with nose blindness. I can’t smell as good as most Euclideans, but I can at least smell better than a human. Y’know, it’s one of my fun genetic defects.”

“Sooo, what do I smell like?” Mabel asked eagerly.

“Ah. Kid, you’re not gonna like it.”

“I smell bad?!”

“No, not bad. It’s a nice smell. Makes me feel welcome.” He frowned. “Ya smell like human B.O. and fruit.”

“What?!” Mabel cried, as she started frantically sniffing herself. “Dude I just bathed!”

“No, no, no. All humans have some smelly human smell. That’s like, you’re base smell. As a species. It’s not just you. It’s the undertones that are unique.”

“Oh thank god!”

“And then also whatever stuff you come into contact with affects that smell too. And other flesh monsters have different smelly smells, like deer smell isn’t the same as human smell, ya know?”

“I see. You really are like a dog!!” She patted his head affectionately.

“Ugh. Not quite but… sure fine, whatever.”

“So what does Ford smell like?” Mabel questioned enthusiastically.

“He smells like comfort. Well I mean, he smells like human B.O. and books mostly, but it’s a comforting smell.”

“Aw, that’s cute!”

“Sniffing is a form of greeting in my homeworld’s culture but it can also be a sign of affection.”

“You’re so dog-coded it’s crazy!”

Bill scowled. “I’m not a dog.”

“Yes you areee~!” Mabel cooed. “So what does Grunkle Stan smell like?”

“Horrible. Like loser.”

“Ok but like give me the notes. Pretend Grunkle Stan is a perfume.”

“Oh, honey, nobody would buy that.”

“Ok, ok I’m writing this down! ‘Stan… smell!’ Ok!” She looked up at Bill expectantly.

Bill took another sip from the large container and nodded, smiling. “It’s pretty alright. Piña colada.”

“Huh. I do like piña coladas.” Stan grunted.

“So what’s the deal Stanley? Whaddoya want?”

“I was thinkin, after you sniffed all us the other night, you ought to put that snoz to good use!” Stan pulled a little paper perfume sample from his pocket and shoved it in Bill’s unimpressed face.

“You want me to help you pick a fragrance to conceal your stench?”

“No! I think we ought to get into the fragrance business together! Think about it, they sell this crap at the counter in the mall for hundreds of dollars! Hundreds!” Stan declared, having flashbacks to all the times he got jumped by the old ladies at the department store telling him there was a sale on cologne. Did he really smell that bad?

“Haw? I don’t really get excited about money like you do, Stanley. What’s in it for me? I’ve already got a steady gig going with Starburst.” The gig being half his paycheck was cheese, might I remind you.

“Uh… Ford could model for our ads! Yeah.”

This is a terrible thing to say but I'm toji x yn because i think it's the less worse option of gojo x yn. Both relationships have major issues but toji by comparison has less issues and can be salvage. Despite the titanic reference gojo made in sn19 their ship sunk and is staying at the bottom.

Hi! Can I ask you something? Is it possible for you to translate the main story? I find learning kanji difficult that I started to doubt if I can really learn by myself, HAHA.

i would really love to but that is. a LOT of work and i don’t have the time to do so rn (much less working alone). if i ever do it would be sporadic chapter dumps with no guaranteed schedule lol. i’ve heard nids (the usual main story fan translator) is working on act 12 with their team though, so it’s just a matter of waiting 🤞

as for kanji, it is a huge learning curve but trust me it’s worth pushing through!! you never rly “master” it but it’s like any other language you learn smth new everyday

7. snippet of a wip, here’s a bit of nina’s upcoming chapter:

“Nina doesn’t despair when the door closes again behind him, as quickly as it opened, thirteen clicks locking him in with her. She raises her chin, looking down her nose at him. Schooling her features into an expression that dares ask him what he’s doing intruding in her space. This is her cell, for Saints’ sake. All to distract him from how haggard she knows she looks, thanks to the mirror; if it’s not a two-way they’re using to observe her, then perhaps that’s it’s purpose, to force her to confront her ashen skin, the color of dirty snow after months without sun; the discoloring around her eyes, her hair falling out in matted chunks from stress or lack of nutrients or both. As if she could forget her own exhaustion.

So she lets her expression tell this man that he’s under her foot, and not the other way around. She becomes both the puppet and puppeteer, yanking taut on the invisible strings shrugging back her shoulders. The only thing she doesn’t do to overstate her own confidence is laugh at him– that’s a play she’ll save for later.”

12. i do outline… for my longer fics, not typically for one-shots. for my current main wip i didn’t outline pre-chapter 20 (and you can definitely tell, the first third of that fic is all vibes and messy plot 😂) and i’m working on a detailed outline for my hunger games au since that will also be longer. i’m very proud of my outline for my current fic because it’s color-coded by character pov :)

as for if it changes, oh yeah. my outlines just contain all the Big Things that i want to happen, i usually change my mind and add things when i’m actually writing. i have pages in my notes app for each wip that i add ideas to when i have them, and that’s completely disorganized, then i pull ideas/quotes from that to add to my organized outline.

(sorry if that explanation was long-winded i just rly like plotting 😂)

59. when i wrote a lot for The 100 on my old ao3 accs i participated in a couple fic swaps and events. they were fun, i think i missed six of crows big bang recently but i’d like to participate in something like that in the future!

Stay-at-home journal 1/31/21

Yesterday:

Slept way in on accident, mustve rly needed it

Planned where we'd move some bushes in the yard

Played piano

Laundry

Got outbid in an online estate auction

Cut out some shapes from paper for a shelf

Put shelf liner up, then put books up

Finished writing a chapter of my fic

Today:

Usual Sunday chores

Call mom

Maybe sneak in some guitar time

Had a work dream, and at this point all i remember is being at my aunts ranch and trying to print out instructions before we had to leave. Then trying to put a bunch of screws and alan wrenches in a little ziplock bag while everyone was outside ready to go. It was work related bc it was some deadline and we were supposed to have the instructions all complete.

Yesterday i finally moved some books off the floor! Okay so i got some of that heavy plastic shelf liner for wire shelves. Its a sort of milky white and you can kind of see through it. I cut out little succulents and leaves from colored paper and laid them down on the liner. Then i put another sheet of the liner on top to sandwich the shapes in. Then i put a bunch of books on it. The idea was to be able to look up at the shelf and see the decorative shapes. It did work alright, but i didnt anticipate how dark itd be once the books were on. But no matter. A little touch of decoration is worth it. Cant wait for the standing shelf to arrive for the remainder of the books. Heres pics without and with books.

In other news, writing is going well. This chapter is long bc its sort of where things come to a head and i had to logistically get the situation where i needed it to be. But as a "comeback" chapter from a multimonth hiatus, its probably better to give more than less. After that one more chapter, then a quick epilogue. Im honestly most excited abt the epilogue. Im pulling from a real life event that took place right before the covid outbreak, so yeah timelines a little fudged, but itll be worth it. I think im gonna post these one per day starting on fri feb 12. That should give me enough time to wrap up without bending over backwards to do so.

Its raining today. It sounds nice against the roof. I actually feel rested this morning. I think its been a good weekend.
