Hi yes atla au yes. Here's the thing. Yes I wanna know more Abt your au (and I might send in more asks Abt it after this) but uhhh I wanna know thoughts on who would/could be a part of the kyoshi warriors 👀👀 like in or outside of your au bc like technically they're non-bending women warriors in canon but also you can mess with it a little bc creative liberties of aus.... 👀👀 I just love them a lot (I adore Suki so much yk)
(atla/stranger things asks!)
if nobody else got me i know that toy's ALWAYS got me tbh <3 <3
*cracks knuckles* alright, so. i am pulling this out of thin air toy. i need you to know this. everything that is being written right now is being thought of as i go, so if i contradict myself lol... but here we go! let's talk about the kyoshi warriors!
i think the kyoshi warriors, as an entity, would unfortunately become a relic of the past. like with the way that bending and inventions both evolve even just by LoK? yeah, i think the hand to hand combat of the kyoshi warriors probably becomes something that is more just studied as maybe like some sort of martial art? and then their rich history of obviously being formed by kyoshi and then also having suki, who played a key role in ending the 100 year war, be one of the most famous leaders of the kyoshi warriors.
BUT. here is where my brain immediately went after that.
i've talked a little bit before about how i think jonathan would dislike his bending because of the abuse that he was subjected to during training with lonnie. lonnie sucked all the joy and freedom of airbending out of it, and while jonathan is an airbending master, he doesn't really enjoy it. the only time he does enjoy it is when he gets to teach his little brother, who absolutely loves airbending!
so i like to think that alternatively then, jonathan pursues other interests. we know he loves music and he loves reading, and i think in this world, we know there are lots of threats in the avatar universe, so jonathan would probably wanna look for an alternative form of combat skills (even before will's kidnapping and everything). so, he's studying combat styles in the library, and he begins to learn about the kyoshi warriors and their rich history. and yes, the kyoshi warriors began as a group of women warriors, but obviously we see that sokka joined and was able to learn from them and let's be fr for a second in that jonathan byers is the definition of "fuck gender norms"
so, imagine jonathan just saves any extra money he can to buy himself replicable fans to learn how to fight with. and when joyce and will are asleep, he goes out to their backyard, and he begins to practice. and sometimes, he'll use his airbending, because initially it does help with getting the movements down and with the fluidity that it takes to use the fans and to fight with them, but eventually he stops using his airbending as that crutch and just fights with the fans. he wants to be independent of his bending. he doesn't want to have to rely on it, the way lonnie always drilled into him. and yeah, there's a part of him that wants to prove lonnie wrong and show him that jonathan doesn't need his bending. he doesn't have to like it or use it or anything.
we meet jonathan in book one, and he and will are the reverse parallel of nancy and mike. with nancy and mike, we see the elder sibling being the one who loves and excels at her bending, while the younger sibling has a difficult relationship with it. with jonathan and will, we see the elder sibling having a difficult relationship and even refusing to use his bending except in certain cases, while the younger sibling (initially) loves it and is pretty good at it. and nancy and jonathan's arc together gets to explore then why jonathan prefers to use the kyoshi warrior combat methods and his fans rather than his bending, including some arguments between them where jonathan reminds nancy that not everyone could afford fancy amazing teachers to help them learn how to bend.
now i'm getting off topic lol. anyways. eventually, i think jonathan works through his bending trauma (concurrent to will handling his own), and he ultimately makes peace with it and combines his love for the kyoshi warrior combat fighting with his airbending for some fucking AWESOME jonathan byers fight scenes.
(ps steve asks jonathan to try and teach him out to use the fans, and jonathan is too nice to say no lol. and yes when jonathan was learning he went all out and did the makeup because he wanted to learn about the culture and fully embrace it, as best as he can. he makes steve do the same, but ah... steve is not built for fighting with the fans lol. it doesn't work very well.)
