A really tough thing about Utena, and I don't know how to word it properly, is that it throws wild stuff at you while still expecting you to not suspend your disbelief . You need to be curious the whole runtime. There are some scenes which main purpose is just comedy but they exist in the world in such a way that it becomes a natural conclusion. Even if characters are cracking a joke, the desire and the way isn't arbitrary. it's not like it was designed to be labirinthine, it has a somewhat straightforward internal logic, but it's alien.

#and i don't mean that I get Utena. but that I can feel its honesty and see its connective tissue #it's not hastily thrown ideas that try to hide their simplicity behing long-winded explanations #it's a long-winded explanation of a simple idea that has been obscured by outside circumstance #maybe if I've read and seen the works and the world creators were inspired by I would've had an easier time - skipping the rules to analyz #the game - but I feel like it's not necessary.
