Electric Feel [Chapter 4]
chapter 4 of my pipabeth fic on ao3 :)
July 9th
Piper
After a heated debate and 3 stabbed campers, Camp Halfblood agreed to screen the Pixar movie, Cars. Andy hassled everyone in the camp, trying to get them to vote for Zootopia. Alas, her efforts did not bear fruit.
Piper strolled across the grass towards the erected movie screen, spotting Percy and Jason, who were wrestling on the ground, along with Annabeth. Piper broke into a grin and ran over there.
"Jason, what do you mean you've never seen Cars," Percy whined. "It's only one of the best movies ever made."
"Dude, need I remind you I was raised by wolves?"
"Excuses, excuses," Percy shot back with an eye roll.
"Both of you shut up or I'm leaving," Piper said as she plopped down next to Annabeth. "I missed you so much!"
"Wow, why didn't we get this warm greeting?" Jason questioned.
"Yeah. You two saw each other 2 hours ago. Chill out," Percy added. "YO CONNOR, you got our snacks?"
Connor's head snapped up. "You bet, man." If you could rely on one person to smuggle anything into camp, that person would be Connor Stoll. He began digging through his belt searching for their candy orders. "Alright, let's see here. I've got War Heads for Jason, blue jelly beans for Percy, Sour Patch Kids watermelon for Annabeth, and peanut butter M and Ms for Piper."
They all expressed their thanks and Connor sprinted away to finish distributing the candy.
"Oh, Piper," Annabeth started, "I almost forgot, we already went to get popcorn, so I picked you up a bucket."
"Ooooh, thank you!"
"Shut up or I will summon skeletons to get you in your sleep!" Nico yelled. "The movie's starting."
Annabeth and Piper moved closer together and turned their eyes towards the screen.
-----
About halfway through the movie, Andy rolled over to Piper and Annabeth. Piper was pretty impressed that the young demigod avoided rolling on top of the people scoured all over the ground.
"Do you two like each other?" Andy whispered.
Annabeth scoffed, "Andy of course we like each other, we're best friends."
"Noooo, I mean like like each other. Do you like like each other?" Andy asked.
Suddenly, Piper became aware of how close she was to Annabeth, how she could feel Annabeth's shoulder and thigh against her own body. Surely she didn't 'like like' Annabeth, right? They were best friends, inseparable even. Piper thought of Annabeth all the time, because everything reminded Piper of the daughter of Athena. And, yes, Annabeth was incredibly smart, and beautiful, and caring, and brave and-
... and
... and
Oh fuck. Piper liked liked Annabeth.
Piper was pulled from her thoughts at the sound of Annabeth's voice. "What? Andy, no way. Piper and I are just friends, okay? Why don't we go back to watching the movie now."
They were just friends; and Piper would not ruin their friendship with romantic feelings. Romance made things messy.

AUs that live in my head rent free
*multiple ships*
Jercy sports AU where Percy is a basketball player, Jason is a soccer (football) player. They meet at a sports awards show and both get Player of the Year awards in their fields. It's inevitable that they challenge each other to their pertaining sports and laugh hysterically at the attempts. Because their sports seasons are at different times in the year (don't come at me if they aren't in real life I don't give a shit about sports) they go to each others games and every goal/basket scored they point at each other and it's like the whole world narrows to that single moment. They are legendary in the sporting world. When they retire they open up a sports school and recruit fellow friends from other sporting professions. Annabeth is an Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Frank is unbelievable at tennis.
Valjackson childhood best friends AU where Percy's mom and Leo's mom were best friends their whole lives and therefore their children spent a lot of time together. Leo and Percy used to terrorize Sally's sweetshop and Esperanza's workshop. They learnt how to be the cutest troublemakers and could not be separated by the strongest forces in the world. They had girls falling all over them but neither was interested. Despite Percy being bi and Leo being pan. It seemed every relationship they tried to enter into didn't work out. There was always something missing. They realize what it is 2 months before they go to college. Percy gets accepted into one across the country and they both panic at the thought of being separated. They have a fallout and it is miserable for both of them. It takes some needling from their mothers, and giggles over coffee later, before they realize why they're so upset. They both storm our of their houses at the same time, just down the street from each other as it had been their whole lives, and slam together. "I don't want you to leave. I love you. I am in love with you Jackson." Percy chokes, tears blurring his pretty green eyes. "I know. I love you too. But we will see each other again. And I will come back. And we will be together." It seems the fates were on their side because although they didn't promise commitment to each other through the college years it felt unnatural to be with anyone else. So they stayed single, and met during the vacations and loved each other from a far. And when college was finally over they fell into each other so naturally it's as if they had never been separated. Now they live a few streets down from their mothers, who ended up moving in together as best friends who had wanted to do it all those years ago. Family dinners and full of cringy memories and soft looks. They were born already together. They die that way too.
Pipabeth coffee shop AU, where they both work at the cute Cafe on main Street. Piper is new and Annabeth, who is busy and impatient, has to show her the ropes. For the first two weeks they open up shop together. Annabeth is not a morning person. Piper most definitely is. They eventually fall in love in the break room and it is horrible how cute they are. The cafe patrons either give them filthy looks or coo. They're both university students when they meet. It takes them 3 years to get together. It takes them 2 to marry. Piper goes on to become a school teacher. Annabeth opens her own coffee shop. They still do the morning shift together.
Percabeth theater kids AU where percy is the shy accidental lead in the play because he was messing around in the auditorium of the school and the drama teacher heard him sing and demanded he sign ip for auditions. Annabeth is part of the tech crew and cannot help but be mesmerized everytime Percy is on stage. They learn of each other when Percy has a costume emergency during the first dress rehearsal and she's in the wings to help him about 30 seconds before he goes on stage. He gives her roses to thank her and it is the end. They're together from that moment on. Who knows if they last, they live on forevermore in the wings of the stage.
Valgrace teacher AU where Jason is the new history teacher at a high school and Leo, the maths teacher, takes great delight in having his student prank Jason's classroom on the daily. It is especially fun when the blonde comes storming in all red in his golden face and then immediately schools his expression into one of pointed calm when he sees Leo has students. It's always a clipped "Can I please talk to you Mr Valdez." Leo has never been able to hide his grin. One prank goes a little awhol though and Jason's classroom is a mess. Leo helps clean up after school and the tension of three months of back and forth turns electric in an instant. They become the couple the students giggle over. Jason refuses to partake in any affectionate activities during school hours. Leo takes it as a challenge to sneak as many forehead and cheek kisses in as possible. They spend their evenings grading papers and sipping tea. Leo eases his husband's glasses off his face and grabs a blanket before squishing himself onto the couch with Jason. They fall asleep like that many times a month. It never stops.
McJackson theme park workers AU where they challenge each other to the scariest Rollercoasters right after lunch and whoever throws up first has to do park rounds. They're at a tie but Percy is determined to win. So he challenges Piper to ride their two scariest rollers one after the other for half an hour. Piper who can never say no to a dare does it. She throws up so violently Percy has to take over her shift for three days. He brings her soup, and bland toast, and peppermint tea. She laughs at his doting and he mumbles apologies for the guilt of making her bedridden. He says he'll do any dare she asks, so she has some justice. She gives him a glittering smirk and says "any dare?" He should have known then he'd be in trouble but he nods anyway. "I dare you to kiss me." They've been happily terrorizing park guests ever since. And now they both go on terrible rides and get sick and egg each other on. And they are best friends with the added bonus of kissing each other thrown in. When Percy proposes it is so on brand for then their friends groan when they hear the recount. "I dare you to marry me." Piper has never been so happy to complete a dare in her life.
Leobeth as stressed out engineering students AU. They meet in the library when they both go to the printer at the same time and find out its broken. It's 2am and Annabeth just wanted to print her notes so she could start on the grueling process of actually studying them. Leo laughs when she kicks the machine and then fixes it with ridiculous speed. She's grateful enough to throw her arms around him and buy him coffee. They end up studying together often and help each other with theories and concepts they aren't quite grasping. They kind of fall into love, tinkering their friendship just as Leo tinkered with the printer. One day they were groaning over notes and the next Annabeth was kissing Leo because she got an A on her test and she was so happy she was beside herself. He pulls her in for another one and the kiss promised forever. They did everything together after that. Studied, graduated, succeeded. And when they got married Leo printed his vows over her study notes, and gifted her a little printer pendant that she wore on her necklace of beads. Annabeth laughed herself silly and never took it off.

for the @pjoqueernet second creation event : favourite wlw relationship
A pipabeth veteran!Annabeth and counsellor!Piper slow build AU
This is only the first part but the second part may take a while as I’ve got a very busy couple of months ahead but I didn't want to wait to share this with you since its my first longer Pipabeth fic :)
TW for PTSD mention, death mention and mild parental neglect mention
When Annabeth signed up for the army all she was thinking about was getting away from her family. She wanted away from a mother who never even pretended to care about her, a father who was too busy to care and a stepmother who despised her with her every fibre of being. The army had seemed like a good option, she got paid decently and she lived away most of the time, it was perfect. It had always seemed like the right option, ever since she was a child she had wanted to fight for her country, and when she turned eighteen she did. She didn't anticipate all the friends she would make along the way. She also didn't anticipate the losses she would sustain.
Zipping up her black dress and pulling up her tights was hard when her arm was gone. She and her best friend, Percy, had been caught near a grenade. Percy had died, Annabeth had lost both her arm and her world. They'd gone through training together, been deployed together, done everything in their careers together, they were the best of friends, joined at the hip some of the other soldiers said. Now he was gone and Annabeth couldn't return to the army either. She was going to have to live as a veteran, in the normal world, without Percy and she didn't know how she would cope. She’d even thought they'd been moving towards something more than friendship and she had wanted that more than anything, to be in love with her best friend. She guessed it just hadn't been meant to be.
When she’d woken up in the hospital and was told she’d lost her arm, that Percy was dead and that she was being sent home, forever, she didn't know what to do. Every step was a hard one without Percy to discuss it with. She had been overwhelmed with doctors and physiotherapists and family giving her this option and that option for her arm, this kind of prosthetic and that kind or none at all, she never got a minutes peace to grieve for people fussing over her. When Percy’s mum had come to visit her to ask for her input on the funeral she had cried. She was the only person who had truly asked Annabeth if she was okay, what she was feeling, if she wanted to talk. She was the kindest woman Annabeth had ever met and she found herself wishing Sally was her mother, not the distant one she’d ended up with. She had talked to her for hours, spilled everything she was feeling out into the open and she had listened and offered advice, she’d thought about Annabeth when she was going through immense grief herself and they would get through it together.
She had suggested that maybe Annabeth went for counselling a couple of weeks after the funeral. when she hadn't moved on even a little bit, not at all. She had had everything taken away from her, all her friends were still out there in the field and she was stuck here, her best friend six feet under and nothing she could do with just one arm. In reality there was plenty she could do if she put her mind to it, she just didn't want to. She had gone out with old high school friends a couple of times just to get out but she could feel that she’d drifted from them, they were so superficial and she couldn't deal with that in the world she was living in. All they wanted to know was how her hair had stayed so naturally blonde and if it was hard to keep up a good skincare routine in the army. She didn't want to know them anymore, no-one asked about her lack of an arm, it was like the elephant in the room to her, and no-one said they were sorry about Percy, or even asked about her friends back in the army. They cared about themselves and didn't care enough about Annabeth to put themselves through the trauma of asking how she was. She would have smiled and said she was fine if they had, but that wasn't the point - it was nice to be asked.
Since Sally Jackson always gave the best advice Annabeth decided to take it. She didn't have anyone she could talk to about her problems, her parents didn't want to listen and besides, her mother was living in Greece and her father had moved across the country for some lecturing job he’d always wanted. She was alone in her little apartment in the city. Sally said she could always call, and she did sometimes but she didn't want to burden her with her problems when she was already going through so much loosing her son, Sally wasn't a therapist and so Annabeth wouldn't treat her like one. She was a mother grieving for her son who recognised that Annabeth had lost him too.
Her father had promised to pay for the counselling since he couldn't be there for her, which was nice of him, at least he was trying Annabeth thought. He even called every now and then to ask how she was which was a massive improvement from five years ago. Five years ago they had been living in same house and he'd barely spoken a word to her. The distance had improved their relationship for the better, that was one thing the army did for her.
So on a dull and dreary Tuesday morning Annabeth found herself walking into a grief counsellors office, her appointment time and appointed counsellor scribbled on the back of a smart business card for love and loss counselling. She turned the card over and over again and again in her hand on the bus and again on her way up the stairs to the reception. It was a wide open space with three grey sofas set out in a rectangle on one side, the middle one facing a long wooden desk, where a receptionist sat on a computer. Annabeth walked up to the desk and told the receptionist her name and was led through a narrow corridor to a room with a large window and two sofas facing each other over a coffee table. In the corner of the room there was a kettle and a fridge with mugs neatly stacked by coffee granules, sugar and tea bags. As she closed the door behind her an attractive lady in a smart black dress stood up and came over to greet her. She shook her hand.
“I’m Piper Mclean and I’ve been assigned as your counsellor.” She said to Annabeth. “No topic is off limits in this room and everything said will stay in this room and will never be repeated by me to anyone.” She said seriously. She sounded genuine and she sounded like she cared. “I’m here to help you deal with your grief and sort through your emotional problems and offer advice on anything you’re struggling with.” She said. She gestured to the sofa. “here, take a seat.” Annabeth sat down putting her handbag on the floor. She settled onto the sofa and Piper went over the kettle and offered her a drink, when she had made it she sat down opposite her.
“Tell me your background and why you’re here, take your time with anything that is difficult.”  Piper began once they were settled.
Annabeth looked own and began worrying at the edge of her loose knit jumper. She took a deep breath. Why had she came here? She was about to spill her stupid tragic life out to a complete stranger in the hope that this stranger would say some words that would make it better and now she rethinking the whole idea. She didn't want to. The stranger was so hot she was intimidating with her kaleidoscope eyes and braided brown hair, in her body con dress and black heels. Annabeth looked up at her. “I don’t know why I came.” She said.
Piper’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “I’m not here to press you if you don’t want to talk about it.” She said. She smiled a warm smile that made butterflies flutter in Annabeth’s stomach. Why was she like this? She was always attracted to the most inappropriate of people. This woman was truly beautiful. Annabeth closed her eyes, she couldn't think like that.
Annabeth’s voice was shaky as she spoke. She wanted to cry but she wouldn’t, not in front of someone so in control. “I don’t want to talk about it.” She said as calmly as she could. She stood up.
“Do you want an appointment for next week?” Piper asked. She smiled. “And we don’t have to talk about it if you don't want to.” She said. Annabeth just gave her a small nod. No matter how much she didn't want to do this she knew it would help in the end, she knew she should carry on with it. It would make everything easier, and besides who else did she have to talk to?
On the bus on the way home Annabeth burst into tears. She was so alone.
*** The next week Annabeth found herself on the bus and then walking up those same steps to the counsellors office, giving her name at the desk and being led through to Piper’s office. Why? She didn't know. Maybe it was because she knew she needed it, maybe its because she fancied Piper - if she could fancy her after only meeting her once, or maybe its because she knew that Sally was always right.
This time Piper smiled widely as she walked through the door and went straight to the kettle making Annabeth a drink. She asked her how she was and Annabeth replied with her token “I’m fine, how are you?” If Piper wasn't expecting that answer she didn't show it. She had a brilliant poker face.
They chatted for a while over little things like the weather and the latest episode of Game of Thrones, how it wasn't really Piper’s thing but her best friend Leo loved it. They talked about Big Brother and how Annabeth hated reality TV but back in the army Percy and Thalia had loved it so she’d watched it anyway. Annabeth was glad for the small talk, glad the session wasn't as heavy as the first one. She found herself laughing at what Piper was saying, something she only ever did when she face-timed Thalia or Reyna. She was opening up in little ways, talking about the things she missed from being in the army, the little ways in which she missed her best friend like the blue food obsession and the urge to collect seashells for him whenever she saw a pretty one.
After a few weeks Annabeth was enjoying her sessions with Piper. It felt more like meeting up for a coffee with a friend you could talk to about anything rather than seeing a therapist and she felt at home. Piper never pushed her to talk more about the trauma she’d been through and she never belittled Annabeth for her feelings. Soon Annabeth was beginning to wonder what it would be like if Piper really was her friend.
During her fifth session Annabeth told Piper everything that had happened on that day, the day she lost everything, and everything that had happened since. She was glad Piper didn't push because she didn't want to tell her why she’d joined the army yet, why she’d always been running. Piper listened and she offered her tactics to make her stop thinking about it, little things to do every day, routines to get into to stop remembering the explosion. She gave her tips on how to remember her friends in a good, nostalgic light instead of wanting to cry about it all the time, how to smile when she talked about them. After three months Annabeth was beginning to live again, she didn't want to spend all day in bed, she washed her hair every day and she was starting to go running again, not as often as before but she was and she found it took her mind off things, it helped her breathe the fresh air and feel alive again.
***
“I’m assigning you another counsellor.” Piper told Annabeth on their 15th session. Annabeth was disappointed, she had thought she was making progress in getting over everything, she was sure of it. She still missed Percy and she thought of him and her life back with the army everyday but it wasn't a painful stab in her chest cutting her open again and again anymore, it was becoming a dull ebb, she could live her life again despite all that had happened. That didn't mean she didn't think of him still every day, she did - he was her best friend - but she could cope. She always looked forward to her counselling sessions, it sounded strange as they were something a lot of people shied away from but she liked Piper. Piper always went at her pace, she was concerned but she didn't push her and she always knew what to do, she was always cool-headed, but Annabeth guessed that was her job. It allowed Annabeth to breathe, to talk about her feelings without fear of being judged and knowing she was getting the advice and help she needed. So when Piper told her that she was no longer going to be counselling her Annabeth was confused and upset.
“But you’ve helped me so much.” She complained. “When I first came here I struggled to go anywhere, do anything because I had lost so much but now, I’m looking for a job, I go running, I’m starting to live a little more normally.” Annabeth said. “Don’t get me wrong I still have a whole lot of issues but I’m doing better am I not?” She asked.
Piper smiled an ‘I can’t do anything about it smile’ that Annabeth guessed she had gotten from years of working with the public. “You are improving, so so much and I am so so glad that you are but . . . this has to be our last official session with me as your counsellor because” Piper paused and took a deep breath. “I’ve become too involved.” She said.
Annabeth just stared at her.
Piper laughed a sad laugh. “You might want to run away and never see me again but I can’t be professional and the rulebook says that if you become involved you have to step back and let someone else takeover and . . . I like you way too much to keep on being your counsellor.” She explained.
Annabeth looked down at her jeans and smiled. “I . . . I guess I like you too” She mumbled. “Does that mean . . . does it mean I can see you outside of this? Like go for dinner and stuff?” Annabeth asked. She’d only known her about four months but she couldn't imagine a life without Piper. She so looked forward to their weekly chats about this book or that TV show which they always began their sessions with. Annabeth didn't know whether it was weird to fancy your counsellor but Piper obviously felt the same about her, it felt  like a one in a million chance and Annabeth had been lucky for one measly time in her entire life.
Piper grinned at her. “I sure hope it does.” She said with a cheeky smile, her younger troublemaker self coming through.
***
The next counselling session Annabeth went to was with an older lady, in her mid forties, who was nice enough - she was considerate and let Annabeth take her time but she didn't have the same easy chit chat with her that Piper had had. Annabeth guessed it was a good thing, she’d get to the bottom of her emotional problems quicker that way, she wouldn't be chatting about meaningless things for hours on end. She was also still seeing Piper, and now they didn't have to maintain a professional client relationship, they could do what they wanted, be what they wanted. Annabeth didn't have to fear her emotional scars scaring Piper away because she knew most of Annabeth’s past already and still liked her.
For their first date they went to a pizzeria and shared the most amazing pizza known to man. They laughed a whole lot, the smile never left Annabeth’s face even when she was running up the steps to her little apartment alone or when she closed the door and snuggled into bed. For the first time in what felt like forever she woke up feeling happy, with something to look forward to.
