FAKE IT ‘TILL YOU MAKE IT, game plan:
➴ chapter warnings: none <3
➴ word count: 1.5k
💌 from me to you: and here’s the first chapter of fake it ‘till you make it! posting this sooner than expected in honor of last night’s game. can you guys believe we have nico hischier as our captain? how lucky are we? anyways! i hope you all like this! (the posting schedule will be just like TYPA, every other day!) ♡
𖧷
WHEN YOU tell people that being friends with a hot, young NHL player isn’t at all that great, all they do is look at you like you’re batshit crazy, and give you one hundred and fifty four arguments trying to make you, someone who’s been friends with a guy who’s been a NHL star player for the past few years, see how wrong you are.
You love Nico Hischier. You really do. You met him when you were just eighteen, being friends with his sister, Nina, and immediately locking in with Nico. He’s the sweetest, kindest and most loving man you have ever met in your life, and now that you’re twenty-three, almost twenty-four, you can see how rare men like Nico are.
But now that he’s a famous player, captain of an entire team and known for being one of the hottest men in the NHL, you sure feel like you’re paying a high price for being in his life.
Not in a bad way, though. It just sucks to see the amount of women throwing themselves at his feet, and what sucks even more, is knowing that he won’t even blink an eye at them because he’s head over heels for Nora Ellis, a crazy girl he met two years ago at a party.
Nora is beautiful, you’ll give him that. And usually, you wouldn’t be upset with him having a crush. In fact, you and Nina are always encouraging him to engage in new relationships and meet new people, so that he isn’t only worried about his job.
Nora. She’s the most beautiful black woman you have ever seen. She’s intelligent, she’s funny and she knows things about Hockey like no one else— being the daughter of one of the most talented coaches in the NHL does that to you, you guess.
The only problem with Nora Ellis is the fact that she only cares for men who are in a relationship.
Married or dating, she doesn’t care. Her only goal is to make them give up on their partner to be with her, and once she gets tired of them, she finds another mission to busy herself with.
Nico doesn’t seem to notice that. To be fair, no one really does. She can be very subtle and discreet, and the only reason why you caught up on that in the first place is because every party you go to, you try to blend yourself with the walls, so you don’t get too much attention on yourself.
Nico always tells you to stay by his side and mingle with his friends, but by the end of the night, you’re always sitting near the bathroom door, with a drink in your hands, watching the party unfold with attentive eyes.
And turns out that a lot can happen in the bathroom of a party full of NHL players and Nora Ellis.
So you know she’s not good for him. You’ve tried to talk him out of it more times than you can actually recall, but it’s a dead end. Nico’s in love with her, and has been for two years now. He won’t give up on her unless something really drastic happens, but since Nora is really good at what she does— destroying relationships for fun—, nothing will ever rise to the surface.
“She’s so… pretty,” Nico sighs, sitting on the couch beside you, making you sigh and put your book down, not forgetting to mark the page you were in. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you.”
You smile, touching his cheek, watching with awe as his dimples appear. “It’s fine, Dimples.”
He rolls his eyes as he always does when you call him that, and continues.
“You’re the only one who still listens to me ramble about Nora,” he pouts. “Nina said that if I talk about her one more time, she’ll fly to Newark and personally destroy my phone so I can’t call her anymore.”
You laugh loudly, perfectly picturing Nina saying that.
“And Luca?” you ask, raising your eyebrow.
“Luca just says I need to move on.”
“Well, he’s always been more patient than Nina, that’s for sure,” you nod, placing your book on Nico’s coffee table and bringing your knees close to your chest, resting your head on them. “But… he’s not wrong, y’know?”
Nico gives you the puppy eyes, as he always does whenever someone mentions that he should get over Nora, and you sigh again.
Seeing him like this sucked in every way. And you’ve tried everything— get him on dating apps, blind dates, normal dates, pointing at a pretty girl at a party, literally everything.
And still, he’s not budging.
“I wish she would just look at me. I’m handsome, right?” He looks at you, brown eyes filled with despair.
You spend some seconds analyzing him, as you often liked to do. His brown, hazelnut eyes that shined bright everyday, his hair that’s now a little bit longer than usual, his legs and arms which are absolutely huge— when did he get that big anyway?— and his perfect, charming smile and dimples.
“Emma?”
“O-oh, yeah, you’re… fine, I guess,” you shrug, trying to hide the fact that you were checking him out. Weird. “It’s not about you, Nico, I’ve said that before.”
“Okay, but why won’t she pay attention to me, then?”
Because you don’t have a girlfriend, is what you want to say.
Wait.
“Oh my God!” you jump in your seat, scaring Nico who lets out a loud scream and jumps out of the couch with you.
“What the— Emma.” He puts his hands on his hips, trying to look scary, but you brush him off.
“I know how to make her fall in love with you,” you smile, walking around in circles, trying to organize your thoughts inside your head. Nico. Nora. She thinks she’s in love. Nico’s happy. They get together. She’ll leave him after three months or so. Nico’s sad. But! Nico’s moved on. “God, how did I not think of that before?”
“What are you talking about—”
“We have to date.”
Nico stares at you like you’re crazy, his eyes big and confused. He opens his mouth a few times, probably trying to think of something to say, before closing it and inhaling the air.
You wait for him to say something, but when it’s obvious that he won’t, you continue:
“I know it sounds crazy, and I know what you must be thinking, but hear me out,” you step closer, looking up at him. “Girls sometimes don’t pay attention to guys because… well, because they can’t really see them. Like, for example: there’s this one guy in my office which I don’t care about, he’s just my coworker and nothing else.”
“What does this have to do with—” you put your index finger over his lips, shushing him.
“Wait,” you say. “So, he’s there and he isn’t anything. Until, one night, I had a dream that he’s dating me. And suddenly, I wake up and go to work, and I can’t see him the same way I did before. I start noticing how nice his hair is or how tall he is. Do you understand it now?”
Nico smiles, scratching his forehead with his finger.
“No, Emma. That doesn’t even make sense.”
You snort. “Because you’re a man. But trust me on this one, Nico. The second Nora sees you with someone else, she will notice you.”
Mostly because she’s a whore, but we’ll keep that to ourselves for a while.
“Do you have… like… a crush on me or something?” His face is now red and he gets closer to you, placing his hand on your shoulder while he looks like he’s trying to comfort you. “Is that why you want to do this?”
“What— No, what the hell!” you can feel your face getting warm and you step away from him. “No, I don’t have a c-crush on you. I just can’t stand you talking about her anymore. I’m your friend, so I will help you.”
Nico sighs, relieved it seems, still looking unsure.
“You don’t have to do it, if you don’t want to,” you say, closing your eyes for a few seconds. “I know it sounds crazy and I know you probably think I’m trying to get something here but in reality—”
“I’ll do it.”
“What?!” you can’t hide your surprise, almost shouting with how loud you spoke.
He smiles, sitting back on the couch, spreading his thighs and stretching his arms. “I mean, you’re never wrong about these love related things. You did get my sister an amazing boyfriend and you did manage to convince my brother to ask that girl out, and now they’re married. So it’s probably my turn to accept your love advice and shit, right?”
You’re starting to feel bad about this whole thing, because you know Nora will probably break his heart in thousands of little pieces, but what else can you do?
It’s the perfect plan, you think to yourself. It’s flawless, and it will work.
“I try my best,” you give him a half-smile, crossing your arms in front of your chest. “But you have to promise me something.”
Nico nods. “Anything.”
“If this doesn’t work out, then you'll move on.”
“Emma—”
“It’s not healthy for you to be thristing over someone for this much time,” you sit on the couch next to him and place your hand on his shoulder, giving it a little squeeze. “We will fight, and we will fight hard, but if there’s no results in three months, and I’m being generous, we’ll move on. Okay?”
Nico stared at his hands, biting his lips before looking at you again.
“Okay.”

Nailers’ Derek Army: ‘I Have to Protect Our Players’
It’s the replay no one wishes to watch again. Former Pittsburgh Penguin Adam Johnson was on attack for the Nottingham Panthers during the second period against the Sheffield Steelers on October 28. One of Johnson’s teammates collided with opponent Matt Petgrave right in front of him, sending Petgrave into an awkward somersault spin that ultimately ended with his left skate slicing Johnson’s neck. The injury was instantly obvious, and the 29-year-old was immediately transported to a local hospital where he passed away. It was the sport of hockey at its ugliest, and the tragedy reminded Wheeling Nailers Head Coach Derek Army just how lucky he was when he played the game. “After the accident, my wife (Jennifer) finally told me an injury like that has always been one of her biggest fears when I was still playing,” Army explained. “She never said it to me, and I’m glad she didn’t, but it was on her mind. She watched with that fear, and she lived with it all those years. “It was something I didn’t realize because, as a player, you don’t play while thinking about injuries. I knew what I signed up for, and I’m a religious guy so I always said my prayers,” the head coach said. “But when a tragedy like that happens, you can’t help but think about it.” Nailers fans observed a moment of silence honoring Johnson during their home opener last weekend. Johnson played for the Pittsburgh Penguins during parts of two seasons (2019 and 2020) and had played in Sweden and Germany before joining the Nottingham roster this year. The Penguins paid tribute to Johnson before their game against the Ducks on October 30, and the Nailers conducted a moment of silence for him before their home opener on November 4. Kyle Dubas, the first-year general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, issued an organization-wide mandate on October 31 for all minor-league players in the AHL and ECHL to wear neck and wrist guards. Army, who played eight professional seasons before he was named the Nailers’ interim head coach during the second half of the 2020-21 season, has encouraged his players to comply. “Listen, I don't want to call anyone's parent and have to tell them something like that happened to their son on my watch when I could have done something about it. I have to protect our players and that’s why I have talked with them, and I’ve encouraged them to protect themselves,” he said. “It’s easier than ever, too. “Our players know exactly what happened to one of their own,” he said. “They know what’s possible, especially now.” Most of the Nailers have opted for the turtleneck-style neck guards since the Pittsburgh organization made the protective gear mandatory on Oct. 30th. A Tragic Connection The Nailers enter this evening’s home matchup against Idaho with a 4-2 record following last night’s 5-2 defeat to the Steelheads. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. inside Wesbanco Arena, and the Nailers once again will be more protected than ever before. “I’ve heard absolutely no pushback from any of the players about the mandate that came from the top,” said DJ Abisalih, the “Voice of the Nailers” and the organization’s media manager. “When we first started talking about it, most of them said immediately that they wanted to wear (the guards), and then it was unanimous a few days later. “There were some players who were affected more than others, and when our own Jarrett Lee wore No. 47 in honor of Adam Johnson, it really hit home in our locker room. Jarrett knew Adam, so our team had that personal connection to the tragedy, and that meant something to these guys,” he said. “The fact it happened to a friend, I think, made our guys want to protect themselves even more.” Dubas’s mandate does not cover the current Penguins roster, and Army doubts very seriously the NHL is considering any forced changes, and one reason why the neck and wrist guards are not more popular these days is because the equipment only now is becoming for comfortable for players to wear. “What I’ve seen since the tragedy is that players who have the chance to wear the neck and wrist guards are wearing the neck and wrist guards because now they are more like a turtleneck and not like a neck brace,” Army explained. “When I was coming up playing professional hockey, the neck guards that were available were awkward like a neck brace, and they didn’t allow for much range of motion. That’s why no one wore them. Fans have been able to tell Wheeling players now are wearing the additional protective equipment during the team's current homestand. “I don’t know if the ECHL will mandate the neck guards, but I know our organization has and that’s why the Wheeling Nailers are wearing them. Pittsburgh (general manager) Kyle Dubas sent out an organization-wide email, and I’m fine with it. We’re lucky here in Wheeling because our owners jumped and got our players the protection they need so a tragedy like that doesn’t take place with our guys,” the head coach said. “It’s team by team. For us, we're fortunate because our organization wants to do this the right way.” Not until August 1979 did then-NHL President John Ziegler announce protective helmets would become mandatory for all players for incoming players, and in 1988, the league made the same gear obligatory for its officials. Are the neck and wrist guards next? “I seriously doubt making the neck guards mandatory in the NHL is something that will fly because the players are used to what they’re used to, but I bet you’ll start seeing a lot more of them now,” said Army, who signed a three-year extension in May. “What happened to Adam Johnson was a freak accident, but it’s an accident no one wants to happen to them no matter how long they’ve been playing to this point. We wear a lot of stuff to avoid injuries, so I think it’ll be included now. “Even wearing the neck guards we have now is an adjustment a player has to make,” he said. “But that tragedy hit a lot of players and made us all realize what’s really possible when you’re on the ice.” But in the Army household? “I’ve already had wrist guards made for my (two-and-a-half-year-old) son, Boone,” the head coach said matter-of-factly. “No doubt about that. He’s not skating with anyone right now, so the neck guard isn’t necessary yet, but when it is, it’ll be there every time. “You have to learn from tragedy,” Army added. “Especially when life is on the line.” Read the full article

We’re Only Young and Naive Still Chapter 1
Summary: Nora is the first woman in the NHL, a recent call-up to the Calgary Flames, who has her own reasons for being there, much to the hesitation of her new teammates. As they get to know her though, she’ll find the family she never knew she wanted and sparks fly with a certain-future-captain. *This fic will update every Monday.
Nora waited outside the locker room for the rest of the team to join. She had been waiting for them to head out on the ice, knowing that they were in various states of undress behind the other wall. She had scrambled to get changed in the small bathroom that a member of the Avalanche’s front office had led her to. He’d sheepishly told her that this was the best that they could do and Nora had just nodded. She’d had to change in supply closets before in the absence of a women’s restroom close to the ice level.
Waiting in the empty corridor for the team allowed her anxiety to fester. Nora could only imagine what was going to await her once she got out onto the ice. There were some who were excited for her to become the first female NHL player to ever play a professional game. She knew they had clambered to get tickets, to show the little girls that anything was possible and that they, too, could join the NHL some day. Nora was nervous to step into that role of a role model, but she didn’t mind. It was the other faction, the one who had already mentioned her on Twitter and caused her to change her Instagram settings that worried her. They didn’t want her to play, they didn’t want a woman in the NHL. Nora could only imagine what they would say after her first game, that anything she’d do wouldn’t be good enough, that she was proof of why women didn’t belong in the NHL. Nora was so lost in her thoughts that she was jolted by the sound of the locker room door opening.
Jacob Markstrom readjusted his goalie mask on his face and headed out to the ice for warm ups. Nora followed close behind until they got to the ice’s edge.
“You first,” Jacob nodded towards the ice and gently tapped her on the back of her legs with his goalie stick. Nora sighed. It was tradition for players playing their first game to skate the first lap solo, but she’d rather forgo it. Nevertheless, she gritted her teeth and took her first steps onto the ice. For a moment, she hoped that with her hair tucked into her helmet, people wouldn’t recognize her, but as she started to gain momentum the crowd ignited. It was like everyone had an opinion. Sure she heard the cheers, but intermingled with them she heard the boos. To be honest, she wasn’t sure which there was more of. Much to her relief, after the first solo lap, the rest of the team piled on the ice and joined her for warm ups and she felt herself relax as she began to blend in with the other red jerseys.
Nora played 5:43 in her first NHL game. It wasn’t a lot, but it was a first. Nothing remarkable happened, and the Flames lost 3-1 in the end. It wasn’t an Auston Matthews level debut by any means but it wasn’t bad. She’d completed most of her passes and she’d made all of her line changes. Sutter didn’t play her much, nor did she expect it. She knew how he felt about having her on his team. She’d been great in the AHL racking up points and causing the hockey writers to wonder if she was going to break the glass ceiling and play in the NHL. Then she was brought up to the NHL and started practicing with the team, always being a healthy scratch when the final line up was decided. But the Flames kept losing and Nora knew that there was pressure on Sutter from the front office to play her. She wasn’t naive to the press that would surround her debut, neither was Brad. So, when Sutter finally announced that she was going to play her first NHL game, it wasn’t completely a surprise, but the timing took her off guard. The rest of the team had acknowledged it with polite cheers, but Nora knew that they weren’t thrilled to have her there either.
She’d sat in the locker room after the game, still fully in her gear while Sutter reamed them. “None of you played well today. Fuck, she played better than half of you and it was her first fucking game,” Sutter said as he pointed Nora out. She felt the cold gaze of the other players turn towards her as Sutter had pretty much just put a target on her back. She drowned the rest of his diatribe out and as she snuck a glance around the room, it looked like the rest of the team was also ignoring him. When he stormed off, Nora finally felt like she could breathe and retreated to the bathroom where she’d gotten dressed.
She’d only been in there for a few minutes before there was a knock on the door.
“Nora, they’re going to want you for post-game interviews,” Tanya, the PR rep said, from outside of the bathroom where Nora stripped out of her gear. She was sweaty from the game but knew she’d have to wait until she made it back to the hotel room before she could
“Okay,” Nora agreed, even though she knew that she was going to be the focus of the interview, “is anyone else going to be there?”
“Matthew will be too,” Tanya said. Nora sighed to herself but nodded.
“Okay, I’ll be out in a minute,” Nora said. She wished it was Jacob or even Johnny doing the interview with her instead of Matthew. She didn’t hate him, but she didn’t like him either. Since she’d been called up to practice with the team, he’d coolly ignored her. Most of the guys treated her that way too, with Jacob and Johnny being two exceptions.
Matthew was already waiting at the table that had been set up for them for press availability. He glanced up at her and nodded in acknowledgement but didn’t say anything. Nora didn’t know what she was expecting. Did she think he’d say ‘hi’ or ‘great job today’? They weren’t friends, they were barely even teammates.
“Alright, let’s start with the first question,” Tanya said.
“Nora, how did your first game in the NHL feel?” a reporter asked. It was a softball question and one that Nora appreciated.
“It was great. It was a dream come true, honestly,” Nora said, “and I’m really fortunate to be able to be here and on such an amazing team to share the game with them.”
“It’s not the result that I’m sure you wished for, though,” the reporter followed up.
“No,” Nora conceded, “I definitely thought that I could have played better, especially in the third period, but Matthew had an amazing goal in the second period, and really it’s just an honor to be here and play a game in the NHL.
“Any family here today to celebrate your first game with you?” A different reporter asked.
Nora pasted a smile on her face, “No, unfortunately they couldn’t make it, but I know they were watching from home.”
“I have a question for Nora…” another reporter started and Nora wished that just one of them could direct their attention to Matthew.
“Why aren’t you in the NWHL?” a reporter asked. That caused Nora to pause. The answer caught in her throat. She knew that was the question that thousands of people had on their minds. There was a league for female hockey players, a great league, so why wasn’t Nora playing in it? Nora had rehearsed the answer to the inevitable in the mirror for what felt like hundreds of times, but here the words failed her.
Tanya looked over at her and watched as she floundered for a response. “Sorry,” Nora said as she brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear, “would you mind repeating the question?”
“Sure, Nora, why aren’t you in the NWHL?” the reporter repeated.
“I- I-...”
“Alright, I think our time has wrapped up,” Tanya said as she closed out the interview, saving Nora from answering. Once all the reporters left, Nora turned to Tanya. “I’m sorry, I don’t know why I couldn’t answer that.”
Tanya smiled but it didn’t quite reach her eyes, “Don’t worry, we can discuss some possible answers and better prepare you for media availability in the future.”
“Thanks,” Nora said. Matthew hadn’t said anything except for the one question directed towards him about his second-period goal. All Nora wanted to do was go back to her hotel room and take a nice warm shower. She didn’t give either of them a chance to say anything and instead headed out and grabbed her coat, knowing her gear would travel with the rest of the team’s. She walked the couple of blocks back to the hotel. She kept her head down, hoping to remain unrecognized by fans who were still lingering by the arena and made it back to her hotel room without running into anyone. She stripped out of her Flames-branded gear and headed for the shower. In the mirror, she could already see bruises starting to develop from where she’d been checked into the boards. She should have been ecstatic to be playing in the NHL; most people in her position would be, but she didn’t. She just wanted the day to be over and to go to bed. That was what made her sad, that she didn’t care that much about being in the NHL, it was just a means to an end. Before she went to sleep, she took one more look at her phone and reminded herself why she was doing this. She knew why she was playing in the NHL; she just couldn’t say it.
Nora glanced around the dining room for breakfast the next day looking for a place to sit. It felt like high school all over again. Ideally, she would have sat near Jacob or Johnny, but their tables were all filled so instead she sat in an open seat with some of the other newer players, Elias, and Matthew. They were happily chatting about some football game that Nora knew nothing about. She tried to follow along for a while, but after realizing that she didn’t really have anything to contribute, she hurriedly ate her breakfast and wanted to rush back to her room. She cleared her plate and offered a faint excuse for something she’d forgotten in her room, hoping to leave. It wasn’t like any of them would notice that she was gone anyways. She’d only made it a little ways before she heard footsteps follow her out.
“What’s your problem?” Matthew asked as he cornered Nora.
“I don’t have a problem,” Nora said.
“You could at least try to pretend to be interested in getting along with the team,” Matthew said.
“What are you talking about?” Nora asked.
“You didn’t come out with us last night,” Matthew said.
“I wasn’t invited,” Nora answered.
“Everyone was,” Matthew said.
“Well I wasn’t,” Nora insisted.
“It was in the group chat,” Matthew said.
“I’m not in the group chat, so I didn’t see the message,” Nora said.
“Oh,” Matthew said.
“Yeah,” Nora said.
Matthew fished out his phone and fiddled around with a few buttons. “There, you should be added now.”
“Thanks,” Nora said. Matthew looked like he was going to say something more but reconsidered.
“Ready for the flight?” Matthew asked.
“Yeah,” Nora replied, “I’ll be back down soon.” She headed back up to her room and collapsed on the bed, with just a few minutes before she’d have to pack her things for the flight. Against her better judgement she scrolled through the group chat back to previous messages and saw messages from when it had been announced that she’d been called up to the Flames.
Johnny: That girl from the AHL’s being brought up.
Peter: Really? I didn’t think she was that good.
Elias: She’s on a five-game goal streak.
Matthew: We’re getting a girl on the team? Are we really that bad that they need to bring her up?
Nora sighed and put her phone away. Tears pricked her eyes as she tried to blink them away. There were other comments like that in the group chat that they hadn’t bothered to delete and Nora read them, wanting to know what her teammates really thought about her. Reactions ranged from ambivalent to disgust, with most somewhere in the middle. There was a knock on the door as a warning to head downstairs and Nora tried to compose herself.
“Are you okay?” Johnny asked when Nora arrived downstairs with her bag.
“Yeah, I’m ready to head to Detroit,” Nora replied with a fake smile on her face.

warning; language, asshole (kinda toxic ngl) barzy, a sprinkle of asshole tito too, toxic relationship, mentions of cheating, angst- the whole thing is angst, carter hart
summary; where you and mat are falling apart faster than you can try to fix it.
word count; 8.3k+
a/n: hi guys! this is a rewrite/continuation of this blurb i wrote. the main pairing is mat x reader but there are a lot of carter x reader themes throughout. there won’t be a part two seeing as i don’t normally write for carter, and i like where it left off. if you have any questions i’d be happy to answer any(: enjoy!
add yourself to my nhl taglist!
You loved your job, truly. You loved photography, and you loved the opportunities you’d been given by joining the islanders organization, but you managed to make things messy for yourself. It wasn’t written into your contract that you couldn’t date the players, but it was assumed that you would distance yourself from them.
Mathew Barzal, however, threw caution to the wind when it came to that unspoken rule.
You were knee deep in it by the time you realized it was a bad idea. Most days were fine, the two of you were professional in the walls of the rink and you knew how to keep it under control. On any other day, you were capable of keeping it all under control just fine, but going to the rink and smiling at Mat from across the halls was not the same as coming to the rink when the two of you were neck deep in an argument. An argument that had been oncoming for a long time now.
You couldn’t focus on anything when you were arguing with Mat. You had fallen behind on editing this entire week, and now you were tiptoeing around the rink that you worked at because Mat was everywhere you turned, it seemed.
You kept your post at the glass throughout the entirety of the game against the Devils, trying to get yourself out of your head when Mat was in your camera’s line of sight. You took pictures of the whole team, you had to, it was your job, but it was hard to do that when Mat was smiling like an idiot after Tito scored, and you had to take a picture of their shared celly.
Even when he turned towards you and you sent him a gentle smile, the sight of his falling from his lips was heartbreaking. You knew he was mad at you, but the ache in your chest wasn’t able to recognize the fact that the two of you weren’t on the best terms.
Truth be told, this was anything but out of the blue. Mat had been on edge for a while now, and while you knew it had everything to do with hockey and how he was playing, it wasn’t easy to accept everything he had been continuously throwing at you. You had a lot going on, just like he did, and you didn’t have the time nor energy to exude on this week-long argument. A week long argument that had eventually shifted into radio silence from your boyfriend.
The next few days proved to be harder than you initially expected, no conclusion being found between the two of you. It was getting out of hand, if you were being honest, and now you had to fly to Philadelphia with the team for two games. You didn’t think all that much about the ride over to Philly until you were faced with your boyfriend happily sitting beside his best friend, not a seat for you in sight.
You sat at the front of the plane, shoulder bumping against Marty’s while you kept your head low and hopefully out of sight.
“What’s up with you and Barzy?” you huffed, shrugging gently and telling Matt that he could tell you as soon as he figured it out because at this point, you weren’t entirely sure what the two of you were arguing about either. All you knew was that Mat was mad at you and had been ignoring your calls and texts for the past three days.
It was confusing to most, given that when you and Mat were on good terms, it was impossible to not see the two of you together. You were both all smiles and giggles when you were around each other, but not recently. You were worried that your spark had died out, that whatever you had built over the last year was fading away with every passing moment, and you were out of solutions.
You had been lost in the Wells Fargo Center for upwards of thirty minutes when you ran into a boy who seemed like he could be your saving grace. He had a granola bar hanging out of his mouth and his eyes were glued to his phone screen while he walked down the hall in your direction. You weren’t sure who he was, but the Flyers shirt on his torso paired with the backwards hat on led you to believe he was a player and would therefore know the layout of the rink quite well.
“Hey!” you called out, just loud enough to have him looking up from his phone and over to you. “I’m really sorry to bother you, but I have no idea where i’m going.”
He laughed gently and slid his phone into his back pocket, not overlooking the Islanders logo on your shirt or your name tag that hung around your neck. His eyes were soft and his smile was endearing in a time where you barely had anyone else look at you over the last few days.
“No worries, though i’m not sure i should be helping the enemy.” you laughed gently, about to make a remark about the Flyers not being your favorite team either, but he spoke again before you had the chance. “Where do you need to be?”
Some time later after you learned that the boy’s name was Carter and he was the Flyers’ goalie, he showed you everywhere you’d need to be over the next few hours. He pointed out different rooms and halls that would be of great use to you and now the two of you were sitting in the middle of the empty seats, looking down on the empty ice.
“It’s weird, seeing it like this.” Carter whispered softly, more to himself than to you, but it caught your ear nonetheless.
“Not used to seeing it completely empty?” he shook his head, telling you that there’s usually always someone down there. Whether they’re cleaning or moving things around, there’s almost always somebody down there.
“Why are you here all alone, by the way?” you hummed softly, letting out a deep sigh with a smile that Carter was easily able to identify as forced. “Don’t you have a hot shot boyfriend that could show you around?”
“And how would you know that?” your voice was light, playful, and it showed in your smile that Carter easily matched.
“I’m not sure there’s a single person that doesn’t know what Mathew Barzal’s girlfriend looks like.” he tore his eyes away from the rink, looking over at you with a look that had your stomach turning, a lump starting to form in the pit of your throat.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” your voice was soft but the silence across the rest of the rink was enough to lift your words up to his ears, the far corner of his mouth twitching up ever so slightly as he registered them.
“Y/n!” you jumped, startled by the outburst from the top of the section, craning your neck around to lock eyes with your boyfriend. “Where have you been?”
You groaned, one that resided in the back of your throat and was only heard by Carter due to his close proximity. He sensed the agitation in your body language and the way your eyes fluttered shut while you took a deep breath to compose yourself.
“Y/n!”
“I’m coming!” you yelled back, muttering a small ‘jesus’ under your breath before pushing yourself onto your feet. “Well, Mr. Hart, thank you for showing me around. I’d be lost without you, literally.”
He laughed at your joke, though corny he thought it was cute. He shook your hand playfully and watched you climb the stairs to your boyfriend who was glaring at Carter even from his place all the way at the top of the section.
“What are you doing down here?”
“So you’re talking to me now?” His jaw clenched, muscles tensing as he soaked in your question. He had almost forgotten the two of you were arguing currently, too focused on getting you away from Carter to assess the situation properly.
“What am i supposed to do? Watch you cozy up beside the goalie I'm about to score a hatty on?” in any other scenario, you’d be laughing, chirping him for claiming that he was going to score a hatty tonight, but you couldn’t do that right now. All you could do was laugh bitterly, focused on the fact that the only reason he was speaking to you for the first time in three days was rooted in jealousy.
“I wasn't cozying up next to anybody, Mat. I was lost and he had time to spare so he showed me around the rink. That’s all-”
"That’s not exactly how it looked to me just now.” you rolled your eyes and walked past him, ducking around his shoulder and walking in the direction of the room Carter pointed out for you a few minutes earlier. “Y/n! We’re talking!”
“I’m busy! We’ll talk later!”
It felt like you were running across the arena during the game, opting to tie your hair back halfway through the first period when you realized you wouldn’t have your own post like you normally would. You were doing your best to get the best shots you could possibly get, but that unfortunately had you breathing heavily and worn out by the time the second intermission rolled around.
Mat hadn’t scored once yet, and you could tell he was getting aggravated. He was playing rougher than he normally would, and you could see chirps being thrown around the ice, almost always directed towards your boyfriend. He took them in stride most times, only opting for a clenched jaw or maybe a hard hit against the boards.
When the second intermission began, you were given the okay to take a breather from your job while your boss flipped through the photos on your camera, laughing when you opted to lean back in one of the stadium seats with your limbs spread out around you haphazardly.
When you were switching sides for the nth time of the night, you ran into Carter again, decked out in his gear void of his helmet, the same charming smile shining in your direction once he saw you.
“To what do I owe the honor?” he joked, earning a few questioning glances from the few teammates gathered around him, all turning towards you with soft smirks and knowing eyes. They knew who you were, a lot of guys in the league knew who you were.
Everyone knew who Mathew Barzal was, and his need to show you off to the entire world once the two of you began dating was loud and in everyone’s face. Everyone who followed Mat on instagram or opened up a gossip article every now and again knew your face, knew how you looked tucked under Mat’s arm. It also didn’t help that the boys surrounding Carter had heard about his adventure with you around the rink earlier today.
“Well if it isn’t Mrs. Barzal.” You bit the inside of your cheek, holding back the insult tickling the tip of your tongue and deciding to focus on Carter nudging him in the ribs.
“Ignore him, he’s not even sure what the word filter means.” One of the taller ones, hair down to his shoulders and bright blue eyes sending you a gentle look, tried to assure you that his friend was anything but thoughtful in moments like these.
“I guess that’s why they call him the team rat, huh?” Travis, who had no idea you even knew who he was, narrowed his eyes at you just before a small smile stretched across his lips.
“How’s the game?” Carter’s smile practically hung off of his lips, confidence bursting at the seams as he silently referred to the fact that Mat had threatened him with a hatty not too long ago, and the Islanders had only scored once all night long, and it wasn’t even Mat’s.
Going into the third period, the Flyers were up 4-1.
“I plead the fifth.” you said gently, hearing a few laughs erupt all around you.
“Looks like your hubby’s not getting his hatty tonight.” One of the boys who you didn’t know the name of sent you a gentle elbow into your arm, offering up a smile with his chirp.
“Looks like he’s not getting a lot of things tonight.” your eyes found Carter, who was already looking at you with a wide smile. You took a deep breath, prying your eyes away from the boy and looking around the small circle that formed in the hall. “Well, boys, if you’ll excuse me-”
“Y/n!” you sighed then, unable to suppress a physical reaction to having your name yelled across the hall for the second time today. You were annoyed, given that this was only the second time Mat was speaking to you today and it had all of the same intentions as his last attempt.
“Yes?” you turned over your shoulder to see not only Mat but Tito as well, both looking at you as if you’d grown two extra heads. Tito looked to Mat, expecting him to answer your questioning eyes, but he never did. He just stared at you, lips parted but never speaking.
Truth be told, you needed him to say something. You needed him to say something because he was the one that had left you in the dark this week. He was the one that was going through a time so tough he took it out on you. You did your part, but Mat had yet to do his part, and it was killing you on the inside.
“I have to go.” you took off in the direction you were originally walking, searching for your next post in the stands.
You tried to distract yourself, but it didn’t seem to be working. Your hands were shaky while you tried to snap shots as much as you could, and when Mat had a breakdown on the ice, it all went even further downhill.
Carter didn’t take the brute of it, which surprised you in all honesty, but you weren’t all that surprised when your number 13 was going hit for hit with their 11. Gloves were dropped in the last three minutes of the game, both of them walking away with sore knuckles and five minute majors.
You weren’t even sure what started it, seeing as you were trying to snap a picture of Tito taking a shot on goal, the other two dropping their gloves on a different part of the ice and out of your view. You couldn’t watch it, instead dug your chin into your chest and tugged on the roots of your hair in frustration. You knew that the Flyers were going to win, given their four goal lead and the Islanders’ inability to get their shit together it seemed. You knew Mat was going to hit a rough practice tomorrow, and it somehow made you more excited to have a hotel room to yourself and the morning off.
You didn’t see Mat until you got back to your room, shoulders slumped and exhaustion raking through your body. You pushed the door to your room open and jumped a foot in the air at the sight of your boyfriend sitting at the foot of the bed, hands clasped together in his lap and head hung low. He was anxious, you could tell by his posture and the fact that he wouldn’t meet your eyes.
A sick feeling resided in your stomach when a minute passed and neither of you spoke up, both waiting for the other to take the leap. Mat tried to collect his thoughts, despite having plenty of time to do so while he waited for you. He wasn’t even sure how he made it back before you, if he was honest.
“Where have you been?” it was a bad lead in retrospect, given that he showed no real care as to where you were at any other point in the week. That on top of the fact that he wasn’t supposed to be here in the first place made for a bad start to a hard conversation.
“Working, Mat. I do more than snap pictures of the team at games and run back home.” he knew that. He knew because he’d been the one that woke up in the middle of the night to you relentlessly editing things and piecing things together for a deadline. He was the one that woke up to an empty bed, finding you posted up at the kitchen counter with a cup of coffee beside you and your head burning from the strain on your eyes.
You didn’t, however, tell him exactly what you were doing. You were working, yes, but you kept specifics to yourself. He didn’t deserve specifics when he was acting like this. You deserved an apology, an explanation, quite literally anything more than you currently had before you had to give out your whereabouts.
“I’m sorry this week’s been the way it has. I just- there’s a lot going on right now and I can’t get it all under control.” you sighed, setting your camera bag down on the desk before standing in front of Mat
“It’s fine if you don’t have things under control all the time.” you set your hands on his shoulders and waited for him to look up at you, eyes filled with an emotion you couldn’t quite map out. “It’s not fine that you take things out on me when I didn’t cause you this distress.”
“I know.” he spoke softly, understanding that he was doing something wrong but not entirely providing a solution for it, nor figuring out a way to fix it. “I’m going to figure it out. I’m sorry.”
You nodded, accepting the soft kiss he silently asked for. You let him stay the night, though you couldn’t fall asleep. You leaned back into his chest, held his arm that was wrapped around you close to your chest, but you couldn’t sleep. You didn’t sleep for more than an hour or two before Mat’s alarm went off and he left for practice.
You were able to sleep after Mat left, only logging about three hours before your own alarm went off and you had to make it to the rink. The day seemed to be uneventful for a while, but when you finished all of the things you had to do for the day and found a seemingly decent restaurant to stop in on your way back to the hotel, you were met with four smiling faces that you recognized easily.
“Y/n!” Carter’s voice caught your ear easily, making you spin around in line, seeing the smiling boy give you a gentle wave from the table he was sitting at with the others, all who offered you a similar expression.
You held up one of your fingers, seeing four boys nod at you in response as they waited for you to order your food. By the time you ordered and paid, grabbing the number that the cashier slid across the counter to you and spinning around, there was a chair at the end of the table that Travis was sitting in, leaving the spot in the booth beside Carter vacant. All four of the boys were pointing at the seat, ushering you into it with wide smiles.
“Well this is a pleasant surprise.” you smiled warmly at the boys as you approached their table, sliding into the seat they vacated for you.
“You’re telling us.” Carter offered, his smile cutting through you just like it did every other time it was given to you.
Carter was cute, that much you could admit to. You hadn’t spent much time with him other than the other day when showed you around the rink, but you’d talked to him more than your own boyfriend in the past week so that was saying something. You were grateful for his hospitality, and even if you knew there was something else brewing beneath the surface, it wasn’t anything you were going to acknowledge and you certainly weren’t going to act on it.
The rest of the boys were nice. Travis was a bit of a pest, but Nolan was able to keep him under control most of the time. They balanced each other out and you were aware of that from the very beginning. Joel was a nice kid, not the loudest in the room but certainly not the quietest either. Overall you had a good time sitting with and talking to them, appreciating the good company in a time where you had felt pretty isolated.
They showed you a few places around Philly, sticking things within walking distance of the restaurant the five of you came from. It was fun, being able to forget about the chaos going on in your life for once. They even walked you back to your hotel, leaving you with each of their phone numbers to assist you in the rest of your time in Philly, and warm smiles.
Just as they were leaving, Carter hung back for a bit to offer you a softer smile than the one he was giving you throughout the day, his eyes telling you that there was something brewing in his mind, something he had been holding back about all day.
“I just wanted to say that you’re doing great. I don’t know what’s going on in your life, that much is obvious, but you deserve better.” he gave you one last smile and told you to call him if you needed anything at all before turning to catch up with his teammates.
Carter’s words hung in your mind longer than you would’ve expected. They made you rethink everything that had occurred in your life over the last few months, every up and down, every bridge you built both by yourself and with others. You wondered if you were where you were supposed to be, if this is where you were meant to be in life and how long you were meant to be there.
You loved Mat. You loved him completely, but there were things missing. You weren’t sure what it was, and part of you wanted to believe that you were just in the middle of a rough patch, but a greater part of you knew better. You knew that Mat was going through the thick of it, and your mind couldn’t help but wander over the chance that the time for you and Mat had run its course.
You went another night without sleep, the stress from overthinking yourself into oblivion making it impossible to get any consistent sleep throughout the night. It showed in the way that your bags were deeper, darker than normal and the way you yawned every few minutes. However, instead of dozing off in your seat or complaining about your lack of sleep, you grabbed a coffee with two extra shots of espresso on your way to the rink and threw yourself into your work.
You were neck deep in assignments, legs tucked under you and headphones stuck in your ears when a flash of blue entered your sight, prying your eyes away from your laptop and casting them up to the blue eyed boy from Quebec. He was looking at you like you’d done something wrong, like the world was on fire around you and you were holding a match.
You and Tito were good friends, especially after you started dating Mat. with the two of them being inseparable and Mat making a special place for you in his life, you and Tito naturally spent a lot of time together. You were good friends, honestly, but there was never a time when Tito took your side over Mat’s. Sometimes he passed judgment without hearing every side of every story, but you understood. You knew that Mat needed people to lean on when the two of you were in the thick of it, you just wished it didn’t morph Tito’s opinion on you.
“What can I do for you, Beau?” he hummed, a noise of disapproval that you had heard from him too many times to count. He sat beside you, not surprised to see you shut your laptop and turn your attention towards him.
“The two of you need to figure this out soon. You need to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it, and by god you need to get him out of his head.” You could tell his intentions were genuine, that he just wanted his friends to be happy, but he wanted the two of you to be happy together, and you weren’t sure there was any more room for that.
“I’ve tried, Beau-”
“No, you haven’t. You haven’t tried, because when the two of you try, things get resolved.”
“You’re right. When the two of us try, we fix things. When the two of us work through things together, we come out of it alive. But you’re missing the big picture, Tito. the two of us aren’t trying. I’m trying. I’ve been trying. I try so hard, and he gives me absolutely nothing. He ignores me for days, only speaks to me when we fly out to a different city and he sees me interacting with somebody who isn’t him. It’s not my fault, Tito, and I know that’s hard for you to see because you’re so far up his ass that you can’t see the bigger picture but here I am. I’m here telling you how to see things for once and I’m begging you that you just hear me out.”
He was speechless, but nodded. He didn’t know what to say to you, but he wanted to hear you out because the crack in your voice and the exhaustion that was bringing tears to our eyes was breaking his heart right in front of you.
“I’m trying, whole heartedly. I ask what’s wrong and I offer solutions, and he takes none of it. He comes into my hotel room with a key, that I'm not even sure how he got, and he tells me he’s sorry but then nothing changes. He stopped coming over after practices, and gets annoyed when I have deadlines I can’t miss. I try and he doesn’t, and if that makes us fall apart then so be it, Tito, because I can’t fucking do it anymore.” your eyes burned, filled to the brim with tears you tried to suppress as Tito looked at you like you were fragile. He looked at you like you were the broken one, like if he even touched you on the shoulder you’d break into a million pieces.
“Y/n-”
“I have to go.” you stood up, grabbing your things that sat around your seat and took off in any direction that looked safe enough for you to escape the headspace you were slipping into.
You’d made it down one hall and around a few corners before you ran into somebody, the impact shaking you enough to have you distracted from the intrusive thoughts you were having. You looked up, met with soft eyes and a look of concern that had your heart sinking further into your stomach than it already had been. His hands reached out, brushing hair out of your face and holding your head back long enough for him to try to piece together what could be wrong.
“What happened?” your lip wobbled then, enough for your chin to twitch and have you bite down roughly on your bottom lip.
Carter grabbed your hand, the one that wasn’t gripping onto your laptop, and pulled you into a room not too far from your place in the hall. It was a small room, only met for equipment that had no other home, but it was enough to get you out of the wide open hallway where anyone would be able to see the breakdown you were about to endure.
He pried the items out of your arms, set them on the shelf beside you so your mind would be at ease with their safety, and wrapped his arms around you. He didn’t know you very well, but he saw the way you reacted to physical touch. He saw the way you leaned into hugs or shook people’s hands for a second longer than most. He made a judgment call within seconds, but he knew he did the right things when you pressed your face into his chest and let out sobs that you’d been holding back for weeks.
He didn’t pester you nor rush you, just held you in the room that could be classified as a closet and let you get everything out. You clung to him, and he held you softly, hands running up and down your back in a soothing manner while he waited for you to catch your breath.
When you did, he pulled back, soft smile still as heavy as it always had been. He waited for your cue, something to tell him it was okay to pry. He didn’t want to overstep your boundaries, and he had no idea where the lines were drawn so it was a dangerous game.
“It’s too much.” you whispered softly, closing your eyes gently while Carter hummed, not entirely understanding your words.
“What’s too much?”
“Everything. Everyone’s expectations, everyone’s thoughts and opinions. The fact that i’m trying to fix a relationship all on my own and still getting the heat for it not working out. Having a full time job where I can’t run away from problems in my personal life. I wish I was still in college, wish I wasn’t surrounded by these people who are staring at me like I’ve burned down the entire planet when I’m the only one that’s trying to save it.”
He listened the whole way through, not interrupting nor giving his unwarranted thoughts and while it was just a common courtesy, it was groundbreaking for you. To be able to pour out everything you’re feeling and thinking without someone trying to pick your brain on the subject was refreshing. You couldn’t remember the last time you put everything out on the table like that without seeing it knocked off right after.
“Hey” you looked up at him, sniffling softly and watching his lips turn up in a smile at the sound. “You’re okay. It’ll all be okay. If you feel invalidated or uncomfortable in the situation you’re in, there’s always an out. Even if it feels like there’s not, even if it feels impossible to claw your way to the exit, there’s always a way out. And if you need help getting there, I know a guy or two who’d be willing to help.”
Carter had a way of knocking you off of your feet with a simple sentence. His words cut through you like a song you’d never heard before, like lyrics that dig so deep you feel like it was written just for you. Carter was picking your brain in the gentlest way possible, and you were eating up every single second of it.
You thanked him for his comfort, for his ear and his wisdom. You were sure that there were things you would have to do in the coming days that would be harder than you could’ve ever imagined, but you were sure that they were necessary in order to better your life for yourself.
You were going to get through this.
All was said and one until the door swung open and you stepped out of the equipment room, locking eyes with the one person on the Flyers bench that didn’t know the meaning of the word silence. Travis meant well most of the time, truly, but that didn’t mean you’d spill all of your secrets to him.
But he smiled at you softly, noticing your red rimmed eyes and tear tracks on your cheek. He saw the look that Carter gave him from behind you and so he simply put his fingers up to his lips as if locking them shut and tossed the key over his shoulder. It was simple, but effective, and he truly had every intention of keeping the knowledge to himself, until he was standing on the ice face to face with the centerman that dropped his gloves opposite him the other night and well, Tk found an opening.
You weren’t sure what was said, nor who started it, but you were sure that in the middle of the second period with a tied game, tensions were not high enough for there to be multiple scrums on the ice.
No other fight mattered until your eyes locked in on Mat saying something, neck vein popping out and spit flying. Whatever he said must have struck a chord with Travis because in an instant, you saw Travis’s lips moving and Mat’s fist flying. It was his second fight in two games and it was highly unlike him to fight this often, but it seemed that he was on edge.
The tension didn’t boil down for the rest of the game, chirps only growing more intense and penalties being called more often than not. It was a head banger, a nail biter, and you were almost distracted from your work to watch it.
Mat was enraged by the time you got to him. His body picked up a couple more cuts and bruises, one that landed on his right cheek bone from a high stick in the beginning of the third. His knuckles were bruised from punching Tk and his eyes were darker than the bright blue color you adored.
You knew it had everything to do with you when the rest of the team sent you careful looks, both of disapproval and warning. You knew something was wrong, something had happened and you were unintentionally standing in the middle of it. When Tito passed you, a scoff dropping from his lips and his shoulder knocking yours gently, you knew it was bad.
“Beau?”
“Oh I'm not helping you out of this one.” he said softly, a careful look thrown over his shoulder at Mat who was glaring at you from his place against the wall. “You have to go fix that one by yourself.”
You wanted to shove him away from you, wanted to tell him that he was being ridiculous and unfair, but you didn’t. Instead, you let him grab his back and walk out towards the bus that would take you all to the airport.
“Mat-”
“I don’t want to hear it.” his voice was low and dark, an animosity dripping from his tongue that you’d never heard him use before. He walked past you, leaving the rest of the guys to let out low whistles and shoot you apologetic looks because in retrospect, they witnessed what happened on the ice. You still had no idea.
“It’s bad, y/n.” You looked over at Marty who stood a few feet away from you, throwing his bag over his shoulder and shooting you a careful look. “I’ve never seen him so mad.”
You sighed and thanked him, giving him one more thanks when he said he’d save you a seat on the plane and took off after Mat. he wasn’t too far ahead, but his angry strides took him far enough to send you into a jog through the facility.
“Mat, wait! Mat! Jesus, Mat just talk to me!” he paused in stride, turned on the balls of his feet and glared into you from his place across the hall.
“Frankly, I don’t want to hear it, y/n. I don’t want to talk to you, and I don’t want to be round you. I want you to leave me the fuck alone.” he went to turn again, hoping that that was good enough to get you off of his back for now.
“So we’re just going to ignore it until it blows over? That’s not going to fix anything Mathew!” he dropped his bag, loud and harsh against the tile beneath his feet. He spun around and strode up to, face to face with mere inches between you.
“There’s nothing to fix. You made your point, you chose your side, and you chose to throw me out to the wolves like I never meant anything to you. So yes, we’re going to ignore it for now but no, it won’t blow over. If you wanted to fix things you shouldn’t be shacking up with goalies in closets.”
“I wasn’t shacking up with anybody in a closet you douche. I was crying in that closet because you’re too stubborn to talk to me. I’m trying so hard, and you’re giving me absolutely nothing to work with. You send Beau to convince me to fix things but you’re not even trying, Mat! You’re the one ignoring me and I’m supposed to fix things?”
“You’re not supposed to cheat on me!” you bit down on your bottom lip, trying to suppress the emotions bubbling over currently. You were trying to get through this conversation but it was defeating, and having him yell at you in front of his entire team was not helping.
“I didn’t ch-”
“That’s bullshit! You expect me to believe you were just hanging out in there for fun?”
“She was crying, dude.” Mat looked over your shoulder at the same time you let out a string of profanities under your breath. Why he was here right now, you had no idea, but you had a feeling it wasn’t going to help any.
“You’ve got some nerve to be here right now.” Carter shrugged, showing no intimidation towards Mat at all. He wasn’t scared, wasn’t backing down, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to stand by and watch Mat scream at you for something you didn’t even do.
“You’ve got some nerve to scream at her like that.” When Mat moved you pressed both of your hands into his chest, steady and hard enough to keep him in his place, not even taking a step towards Carter.
A silence hung in the air, thick and uncomfortable like polluted air that clogged your lungs. Everyone could feel it but nobody made a move. Nobody stood up or down, not weighing in to the conversation with a viewpoint on either side. Everyone simply watched, waiting for you or Mat to say something to the other one, or maybe for you to say something to Carter.
Mat looked down at you, eyes still dark as they were earlier, jaw clenched and breathing fairly regular. He looked angry, angrier than he ever was off the ice. You wanted him to know you didn’t do anything with Carter, nothing more than crying into his chest about problems like the one you were currently stuck in. But then he spoke, he spoke and you felt everything around you wither away.
“Get on the bus right now, or we’re through.” he picked up his bag and gave both you and Carter one final glance before taking a few steps backwards. He was waiting for you to move, waiting for you to choose your side right here, right now.
“Y/n.” Carter’s voice was much more gentle than Mat’s, giving you a break from the screaming and crying. It broke his heart when you glanced over your shoulder and showcased red rimmed eyes and wet cheks just like you had earlier. He knew you were hurting, knew you were in a sticky situation that you couldn’t find your way out of, and all he wanted to do was help.
“Now, y/n.” you looked back at Mat, who had stopped walking by now and was raising his eyebrows in your direction.
It was harder than it should’ve been. You’d known Carter for just over 48 hours and while you appreciated everything he had done for you in the short amount of time, Mat was your boyfriend. Mat was there in times you thought you’d never make it out of. He knew you, knew how you operated. He knew things about you that you didn’t even know about yourself, and he held a piece of your heart in his hands, even if he didn’t protect it the way he used to.
You couldn’t walk away from Mat, but there was a hesitation in your movements. Your slow movements as you wiped your cheeks and walked towards him, head hung low and accepting the arm that was thrown around your shoulders.
You didn’t turn to see Carter’s face, didn’t even look up to see Mat’s. You didn’t want to see either of them, didn’t want to talk to them or hear what they had to say. All you wanted right now was to crawl into your bed at home and cast out the world around you.
“You made the right choice, baby.” The kiss that dug into the side of your head was anything but comforting, if anything it was degrading. It was his way of showing you that choosing him was the easier path, that he would’ve flipped the world completely upside down if you had turned on your heels moments ago.
You and Mat didn’t come to a conclusion that night. You didn’t resolve anything nor did you truly talk about anything. Instead, you let him into your bed and you let him drive away the pain that he caused over the course of the last few weeks. You let him convince you he’d be better, that he loved you and he’d do anything to be there for you. You let him convince you that he was the one for you, that nobody could make you feel the things that he did and while you believe all of this at one point, you weren’t sure you still did.
You added another night to the count of sleepless ones, basking in your thoughts and the ache in your chest after Mat dozed off. Having him just behind you was oddly comforting despite the fact that thoughts in your head were too loud for sleep.
Another week went by before anyone said anything, despite the few Flyers that were blowing your phone up with messages to check if you were okay and ask why you went with Mat when he clearly didn’t deserve an ounce of your attention. You explained that you loved him, that he was your boyfriend and you owed him a clean break if that’s what ended up happening. You also worked with the Islanders, and you couldn’t just stay in Philly with no way to get back home and hours away from work.
Carter had been receptive and understanding, though you weren’t sure you expected much else from him. He didn’t expect you to stay, didn’t even expect you to choose him over Mat, but he expected you to do better for yourself. He expected you to be strong for yourself, to offer yourself a better future than the one you were seemingly drawing up for yourself.
It wasn’t until you got a peculiar phone call that you were even thrown out of the routine of clawing your way through the night and chasing it down with a large coffee and one too many espresso shots.
“Hello?”
“Hello, Ms. Y/l/n?”
“This is she.”
“Hi Ms. Y/l/n, this is Chuck Fletcher with the Philadelphia Flyers. I was wondering if you had a minute to talk.”
You did a 180 after that phone call, pressed with another decision to make and seemingly no time to make it. You didn’t have many people to turn to about the decision, seeing as most all of your friends were biased in their decision making. Your friends loved Mat. They loved Mat and they loved going to Islanders games.
You called Carter after you hung up the phone, anger bubbling over to the point of tears by the time he answered the phone just to let you rip into him. You accused him of getting you the job as the Flyers’ photographer just to have you closer to him, just to pry you away from Mat and New York as a whole. You accused him of not even knowing your skill level, just using this as a ploy to ask you on a date if you showed up.
He listened the whole time, waited for a break in your words to ask if you were serious, to tell you that he’d seen your portfolio because his GM brought it over when he noticed Carter had spoken to you. He told you that he had no say in you getting this job offer other than him telling his GM about the sincere interactions he’d had with you. He put in a good word for your personality, but he never made a comment about your skill level.
Now, you had a decision to make. A decision that would lead to many other decisions, so you thought. You thought you’d have to make a yes or no decision that would snowball into so many decisions you’d be left to suffocate in unanswered questions. Little did you know that by making one decision, the rest were made for you.
“You’re doing what?” you sighed, trying to find the point in this conversation where you’d be left with a new job and a happy relationship, but it seemed as though that wasn’t in the cards for you.
“I’m moving to Philly-”
“It’s because of him isn’t it?” you shook your head gently, feeling the weight of the world trying to shove you beneath the surface. It was weighing you down, pushing you further and further until you reached the core of it all.
“It’s because it’s a better job for me, Mat.”
“How in the hell is a better job for you?” he didn’t believe you. Not after everything that happened. He didn’t think there were possibly any other explanations for your move.
“It pays more, the cost of living is cheaper in Philadelphia, I get more benefits with the Flyers and I get-”
“A new boyfriend.” you paused, took a deep breath. You tried to breathe through the panic coursing through your body, tried to assure yourself that you must have heard him wrong.
“A what?”
“If you move to Philly, you get a new boyfriend. That’s what you wanted, isn’t it? You don’t want me anymore, you want him. So he gets you a big new fancy job and you get to leave New York, right? Because you didn’t want to live in New York your whole life so this is the time to get out. This is the time for you to leave your life behind, to start fresh and meet new people. It’s time for you to start looking for studios, right? For you to start booking freelance shit.”
He comes to the realization too late, when he’s already said enough things to hurt you for a lifetime. He realizes that you moving makes more sense than he wants it to. You never wanted to stay in New York for your whole life. Sure, if things with Mat ended up better than they did, you would’ve stayed for him in a heartbeat. You would’ve gone wherever his career took him because yours can truly be done anywhere, but he knew New York wasn’t your preferred state to live in.
The Mat you fell in love with, the one that took you on dates to your favorite restaurants and brought you home flowers just because, was finally coming back to the surface. The one that offered you his heart on a platter without asking for it, and treated yours with the gentlest touch. You were seeing him again, for the first time in a long time. You wanted to hold onto him, to open up your heart and make room for him again but the truth was there was no more room. You’d vacated a space for him a long time ago and he threw it away. It was too late for that Mat to come back.
“It’s giving you room to grow right? But the growth is different this time. The growth is away from me, apart from me. The growth is individual now, all on your own, but that’s good. That’s good because you need to grow and I- I’m not right for you anymore.” he started shaking his head, letting the dam of tears that he had kept in for so long finally burst.
You were there to catch him, to hold him tightly and kiss his damp cheeks. You were there to assure him that he deserves the world, that you tried to give that to him but truthfully, maybe you just weren’t trying the right things. You assured him that he wasn’t a bad person, that he wasn’t good for you but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t be good for somebody else.
You were there to catch Mat when he fell, and you helped him stand back up again.
Now you were walking away, your head held high and a smile finally living on your lips as you assured him that this was good for both of you in more ways than one. You were going to be okay, and you were sure that Mat was going to be okay too.
So you moved to Philly. You moved into an apartment not too far from the rink, one with a cheese steak place right around the corner. You started working with the Flyers and seemingly fell right into place with them. You made friends and found your footing, feeling like everything leading up to now was exactly for this. All of the pain and hardships you endured was for this, for you to feel like you had finally done the right thing for yourself rather than for everyone else.
You made the right decision.

Tattooed Idiots- N. Patrick
a/n: I went months where I couldn’t even think about writing anything and now I’ve written two things this week? OK. I was also recently talking to a friend about tattoo placement and how they regretted putting one little tattoo in the middle of their arm because it doesn’t flow with how they want to do their sleeve... It made me think of Nolan’s boat tattoo.
warnings: none? swearing
------
“Nolan James Patrick. In the flesh. I have to say, I feel honored to be graced with your presence.”
You hadn’t seen Nolan in almost four years, but here he was standing on the deck of your mutual friend’s lake house. A post college graduation reunion of sorts was planned for this summer, and a group of your childhood friends was now gathered for a week on the lake.
When Nolan left Canada for Philadelphia you left the same town for college in New York. The two of you were close growing up, but it seemed like the older you got the further apart you grew. Neither of you really knew why, and maybe it was just the physical distance that pushed your texts and calls further apart. In retrospect this doesn’t seem likely as you have only been an hour train ride apart for the last four years.
You didn’t spend much time at home in the summers as you worked jobs and internships in the city, and it just so happened that your visits home never lined up with his. Your secret crush on your friend eventually faded, but now that you’re looking at Nolan’s bare back you can’t help but notice that his shoulders are broader, and his arms are thicker than they were back when you were kids.
Both of you had grown a lot over the last few years. You weren’t the same shy teenage girl and he wasn’t the quiet hockey player that dreamt of making it to the NHL. Going to school in New York had pushed you out of your comfort zone and had given you a newfound sense of confidence. Introversion was always a source of common ground between the two of you, as most of your friends were more outgoing and even a bit rowdy at times. For the last week you had racked your brain of what you would say when you saw him again. Would you fall into your old habits and close relationship or would be met with someone you didn’t recognize?
“I’m the one who should feel honored, you’ve only been avoiding me for about four years.”
Nolan turns around to face you and for some reason there’s a tinge of hurt in his voice that only you can probably pick up on.
“You know what, you’re right. You are lucky.” You chose to ignore that feeling and your quick retort takes Nolan a bit by surprise. He wasn’t expecting you to be so bold. He can’t do anything but laugh and as the day goes on you fall back into your old friendship and adjust to each other’s new maturities.
Later that day the group decides to make its way from the deck down to the to dock for a swim. As you strip off your shorts and tank top to reveal your bikini clad body, you begin to feel a bit of self-consciousness sneak up on you. That, and you feel a set of eyes on you. It’s not until later that day that you find out who those eyes belong to.
“You know, a picture would last longer” You look over from the chair you are sitting in to see a rosy cheeked Nolan sitting on top of a cooler.
“You’re probably right... always were the smart one.” As he says it, you see him wink through his round rimmed sunglasses. Did he seriously just wink at you? Is Nolan Patrick seriously trying to flirt with you or is it just the day drinking talking?
Throughout the day you and Nolan continue to tease and banter, and in any other situation you would have definitely considered this flirting. Either way, you were having a good time and a little flirting felt harmless.
Later that night you’re all back on the deck after dinner.
“I need another Claw; anybody want anything from the kitchen?” You ask as you move toward the sliding doors.
“Yeah, I’m gonna get another beer.” You barely even hear his mumbled voice, but he follows you into the kitchen and you leave your rambunctious group of friends behind you. The next few minutes are quiet as the two you move around the kitchen in silence. You’re throwing some trash away that has begun to litter the counters and finally turn to face the sink as you crack open your well-earned drink. You can once again feel Nolan’s eyes on you as he leans against the counter behind you.
“Since when are you into tattoos?” You practically choke on your drink. His deep voice is now closing in on you, and his hot breath is now hitting your neck as he steps up and leans in close behind you. His bare chest is just inches from your back that is only covered by a strap holding your bikini top to your body. And his hands. His fingers are lightly tracing the delicate tattoo that now inhabits your right side. His hands are cold from holding his beer and he’s touching you so close to your breast, goosebumps now litter your skin. If it weren’t for him stepping even closer into you, you probably would have forgotten to breathe. His body is now touching yours and your short frame in being toward over. You can’t help but lean back into him. Taking in his warmth and his familiar scent. His breath still hot on your neck as he mumbles, “You gonna answer my question or are we just gonna stand here all night?”
You wouldn’t have had any problem doing just that, but you clear your throat and turn around to face him. He takes a slight step back, but you’re still close enough to lightly touch his his upper arm and whisper, “Well, I’ve kind of had a thing for them since this guy I used to know got a little boat tattooed on the middle of his arm.”
You look up at him and he has that sly smile on his face that you hate but secretly love.
“You know, I used to have a massive crush on this chick who used to talk about how much she hated that little boat tattoo. She always gave me shit for putting a ‘tiny boat in the middle of my arm.’ She said I’d regret it one day when I decided to get a sleeve. She was probably right, but then she left and stopped talking to me.”
You jokingly push him back a little to distance yourself, “I didn’t stop talking to you, you stopped talking to me. And you didn’t have a crush on me. I would have known. Hell, I’m the one who spent my entire life quite obviously pining over you!”
You’re not arguing, you’re still just joking, but the mood in the air is becoming more serious as the two of you come to realize what has just unfolded. Years of mutual but unknown pining between the two of you finally comes to the surface and you’re both still processing what that means.
You look up at each other, and you can’t help but laugh. Nolan laughs too, and he shakes his head, “I’m an idiot. I had no clue you ever liked me like that. I guess I always figured you were way too smart to be into me. Guess you’re just not that smart.”
“Who says I still like you?” You say it as a joke but there’s a moment when it dawns on Nolan that you probably don’t still like him.
“Nols, I’m joking. I definitely thought I was over you, but as soon as I saw you today I knew I was still fucked. You were right, I’m really not that smart.”
Your feet are moving you back into him and you’re met chest to chest again. Your hands hesitate but eventually reach up to his hair that he has let grow out, and his eyes close as he feels your fingers lightly tug on the wisps that fall at his neck. You’re still looking up at him, admiring just how beautiful he is just as your foreheads touch. They’re resting gently against each other and his arms have wrapped around your body to pull you close. You think maybe he’ll pull away, but you feel his hand take your cheek and then you’re kissing. Nolan can’t put how good your lips feel on his into words. Mind blowing may be the closest thing to accurate.
You kiss gently and his tenderness warms your heart but feeling his bare chest against yours and his arm wrapping around your waste, you can’t help but deepen the kiss. Soon the innocence is gone and you’re desperately holding onto each other. You bite at his lip and he can’t help but moan into you. Years of pining, years of tension, are finally being relieved.
Nolan pushes you back and traps you between him and the cold kitchen island. His lips dance over your neck and you gladly adjust to give him better access. You would have let him take you right there in the middle of the kitchen if you hadn’t been interrupted by an eruption of applause.
“Finally! God Damn!”
“We’ve only been waiting our entire lives for you two to get together.”
Remarks of relief and approval come from your group of friends who are now gathered at the back door. You bury your head into Nolan’s chest and you can’t help but laugh as you realize you really are the two most clueless idiots in the world.
“We really are idiots.” You look up at him and he looks back at you, smiling,
“Yeah, but you’re my idiot.”

Best GMs and coaches in the league ACC to you?
we can start with gms because coaching is a bit more complicated. best gms in the league is easy to look at because like, who has a good team? who has had a consistently good team? whose locker room is the most cohesive, whose coaching staff is the best? who is the best at acquiring and keeping the best players, coaches, staff, etc? and you can see that in the way teams play.
(putting this under the cut because it got long. and i mean Long.)
so, in no particular order: kyle dubas (leafs), steve yzerman (red wings, i will explain this later), don waddell (canes), julien brisebois (lightning), joe sakic (avs), and kelly mccrimmon/george mcphee (golden knights) (god i still hate that name and also will explain this later too) are the best in the league in my opinion. honorable mention to marc bergevin, who has held onto his job much longer than he arguably should have, but still has a decent team on the ice and a decent coaching staff, although the french rule does severely handicap them (i understand why it exists but it does, it just does).
david poile (preds) is the longest tenured gm in the league (has been the preds gm since fucking 1997, thats insane, thats legit before i was born, what the fuck), and i do genuinely think he is very good at his job, and that he is very hockey smart, but oh boy have his recent decisions been suspect as hell, and that reflects in the state of his team. doug wilson (sharks), who is the second longest tenured gm in the nhl, is in the exact same boat (the karlsson deal is a nightmare, and also did he just forget that his star core was gonna get old and retire or ??).
with dubas, waddell, brisebois, sakic, and mccrimmon/mcphee all have the same basic strengths: they draft well, they have a fundamental understanding of their team structure and how to manage public perception of the team and everything that implies, and they have two fingers on the pulse of their locker room at all times. im not going to pretend to know as much about sakic and mccrimmon/mcphee as i do the eastern gms, but it doesnt take much to figure it out. look at the avs, and their locker room, the success theyve found after being dead fucking last in the league. look at the knights and their incredible success that theyve found after literally not existing before 2017. ive talked about dubas a lot on my blog, but its incredibly easy to see that waddell and brisebois do the same shit he does, and i can do a deep dive on them if asked. bergevin has moments of brilliance, like the suzuki trade and acquiring caufield and anderson, but things like kotkaniemi’s development and their entire blue line give me a massive pause, which is why he’s not in the main list. he’s a good gm. he’s just not the best.
in regards to steve yzerman: you have to understand that this is the man that built the tampa bay lightning as we know them. this man was gm of the bolts until fucking 2018. tampa bay has been a monster in the eastern conference for years, BECAUSE of the work steve yzerman put in. his team set the franchise record for wins, and he was the first and is the only lightning gm to have won gm of the year. look up the 17-18 roster. it is, essentially, the roster that won them the cup last year. make no mistake, i think brisebois is great, and hes on the list for a reason, but the biggest part of brisebois’ success was steve yzerman’s incredible hockey mind. brisebois essentially had to sell off a fourth of his roster, and the lightning are still a top team in their division and in the league, and thats why he’s there (it is so incredibly easy to fuck shit up post cup win), but the brisebois lightning would not exist without steve yzerman, plain and simple.
what steve yzerman is doing in detroit should be watched very, very closely by every single person in the hockey world. youre fucking nuts if youre not paying attention to them, not gonna lie. the mantha trade was excellent, if really sad if you know even a bit about the wings, but the amount of draft picks steve yzerman has amassed and the way he’s using the prospects and players he already has is really fucking admirable. mike babcock left the red wings organization absolutely in tatters, and i think, honestly, it was always steve yzerman’s plan to go home to detroit and rebuild. if there is anyone who is going to strike absolute gold this draft year, it is steve yzerman. watch the red wings, i am telling you, keep a beat on detroit. they are going to be good. its not an if, its a when.
(real quick on the knights situation: mcphee was the first gm of the knights, and was also president of hockey ops at the same time, and then in 2019 mcphee said he was just gonna focus on his job as president, but we all know hes still an integral part of the way the knights are run, and he and mccrimmon have kinda been building the knight together since the beginning anyway bc mccrimmon was originally mcphee’s agm. so. thats why theyre together)
as for coaches, it’s very simple. rod brind’amour (canes), sheldon keefe (leafs, yes im biased, we’ll get into it), jared bednar (avs), joel quenneville (panthers), jon cooper (lightning), barry trotz (isles), and mike sullivan (pens).
(disclaimer: obviously coaching is done as a team, and assistants and specialist coaches and staff are all very important, but the head coaches set the tone and organize the entire machine, if you will, so im going to be talking about head coaches as if theyre the entire coaching staff. its just easier this way im sorry)
im gonna just start with the easy ones: barry trotz, mike sullivan, and jon cooper have been in the league for years. cooper is the longest tenured coach in the nhl for a reason (again, just look at the tampa bay lightning. its the gm’s job to make the coach’s life easier and the coach’s job to make the gm’s life easier, and this is one of the prime examples of it in the league. its dope as hell tbh), trotz is one of the most respected coaches in the hockey world for a reason (the caps lost something when he walked. they just did. and now the isles are absolute hell to play against and that is largely the coaching of barry trotz, you legit cannot tell me im wrong), and while mike sullivan does have his faults, i think hes found a way to please both management and the crosby-and-malkin unit, which has been really really fucking hard to do. he also led the pens to back to back cups, which you can never really uh. ignore. lmao. so theres those three.
i know less about bednar, but again, another example of the coach and gm working together to make each others’ lives easier. sakic gets bednar the players and staff he needs to make the avs better, and bednar takes those players and staff and makes them into the absolute giant they are. it wouldve been really, really easy to fuck up makar’s development, or bowen byram’s, or sam girard’s, or ryan graves’s, or jost or mackinnon or rantanen’s, but he hasn’t, and he hasn’t just given up on players like burakovsky or kadri, he’s given them new life as players and made them more successful.
joel quenneville is the reason the bl/ckh/wks were a legacy team point blank period. sure they had the talent, sure the gm drafted well, but you do not get the legacy of the chicago bl/ckh/wks without joel quenneville. they fired him on a whim and it absolutely was a mistake, and the moment the cats hired him i literally out loud said ‘oh no’ because i knew exactly what that meant for the leafs and their position in the standings. the panthers are underrated generally, yes, but they would not be the powerhouse they are this season without quenneville. just look at q’s wiki stats. he’s absolutely unbeilevable. he won the jack adams in fucking 2000, before he’d even won any of the cups with the h/wks. i cant tell you what kind of a locker room coach this guy is, but i can tell you his teams win and win convincingly, and that firing him was the biggest mistake the h/wks have made in years.
whenever i talk about coaching, i talk about rod brindamour and sheldon keefe in the same breath every single time because there is no match, and i mean none, for the love inside those locker rooms. the avs, maybe, but my point stands. keefe and brindamour fucking BLEED team spirit, it is at the center of their coaching styles and their teams are good because of it specifically. marner and matthews are good, yes, and they always have been, but they have surpassed all expectation and then some with keefe. aho, teravainen, and svechnikov are good, yes, and they always have been, but they have surpassed all expectation with brindamour. brindamour and keefe have both hashtag played the game, so they Get It, and more than that, theyve grown and changed their understanding of the game as the game itself has changed, and so they can command the authority of their teams while also connecting to them on a really deep level. i should make a note here that keefe and brindamour are incredibly, deeply hockey smart, and that they are also just technically good coaches, skimming their wiki or nhl dot com articles will tell you that, but what makes them stand out to me is that their players would fucking die for them. the leafs would go through the end boards for keefe, the canes would do the same for brindamour. travis dermott said it best when keefe got promoted: boys wanna play for him. beyond that, the management skills both brindamour and keefe have are just frankly amazing (the amount of ego keefe specifically has to manage in the leafs locker room is astounding and he does it so incredibly brilliantly). the leafs and the canes are talented, yes, and would have been talented regardless of who was coaching them. but brindamour and keefe bring both of those teams from talented to exceptional, and the true mark of an amazing coach is not only how many games their team wins, but how they win them, and the leafs and canes have been winning games this year for and because of each other, and that starts with their coaches. what makes a great coach, to me, is not the talent on the team (though that certainly helps), but how the coach manages his players no matter who they are, and how he helps those players grow not just as players as people, because no matter how much pure stats people and twitter hockey dudebros wanna deny it, that shit does affect on ice play, and it does make good players better.
so theres my analysis of the best coaches and gms of the nhl, im so sorry this is so long, oh my god. also, shoutout to @bishops--knifetrick for sending me an ask about this literally a month ago that i just never answered, sorry for that, but here i hope this is good. :)
#anon#answered#hockey info#wow this took legit like several hours to write between stints of taking care of the baby#ok to rb lmao

D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996) is the best Ducks movie and a flawless coming of age movie
It’s no secret that The Mighty Ducks are a beloved trilogy. The three films spawned a professional NHL team named in their honor, 2021 sequel series, as well as many knockoff films released in the 1990s. But with any movie series, fans tend to rank the films and have passionate opinions on which is the best. For most Ducks fans, the answer is simple: D2. It has the Bash Brothers, Team USA dominating, the iconic “Ducks Fly Together” scene and two Queen songs. What’s not to love? But upon a rewatch of the trilogy, I came to realize that it’s not D2, or even the original, that is the best in the series.
It’s the criminally underrated 1996 D3 that for me, is the most mature and has the most heart. Perhaps it’s that the Ducks are now old enough to carry their own weight on screen. Perhaps it’s that the film takes a look at trauma, specifically trauma in teenagers, and how that manifests itself. Perhaps it’s that the film is maybe ahead of its time, in the way it discusses classism, racism and sexism. There is so much about this overly hated film that makes it the best Ducks movie and a perfect coming of age film.
The movie starts presumably a few years following the Ducks’ win against Iceland. They all look noticeably older - definitely older than the middle schoolers we left behind in 1994 - and all of the male Ducks’ voices have dropped a few octaves. Gordon Bombay, played by Emilio Estevez, is presenting the team (except for unfortunately, Jesse Hall, a leader among the Ducks who would’ve made for a strong presence in this mature film, as well as Portman, but we’ll get to him later) with scholarships to his alma mater, Eden Hall, a preparatory high school in Minnesota. Charlie Conway, played by a young, pre-Dawson’s Creek Joshua Jackson, is the Ducks’ captain and unspoken leader. There’s been much debate over the years over whether or not Charlie is the true captain of the Ducks. Adam Banks, played by Vincent Larusso, is far and away better than practically every Duck combined. Fulton Reed, played by Elden Henson, has shown more maturity and leadership at this point. It’s probably true that the Ducks as a team think that Charlie is Captain because of Bombay’s favoritism towards him (and his mother), but I think that this film makes it abundantly clear why Charlie is the captain.
D3 is Charlie’s story. We see that in the opening scene, when Bombay tells Charlie he will not be following the team to Eden Hall, accepting a job instead in California. We learned in the original Mighty Ducks film, that Charlie and his mother left a bad situation in Charlie’s father when Charlie was very young. We also hear about Charlie’s mother, Casey’s marriage to a new man in the D2, who we can assume from what Jan says, that Charlie doesn’t like. We see in that first film, Charlie’s reaction to Bombay announcing that he is leaving the Ducks after the two of them have formed a bond. It is very clear that Charlie deals with abandonment issues, stemming from trauma in his early childhood. Charlie freaks out when a D3 Bombay announces the same thing, and storms off.
Change is the biggest theme in D3. We see how change affects each of the Ducks, even those who don’t get many lines. Some, like Russ Tyler, played by SNL’s Kenan Thompson, think it’s a good thing. All of the Ducks don’t come from good neighborhoods and we assume that most of them don’t have the best home lives, especially when Charlie tells their new coach, Orion, played by Jeffrey Nordling, that the Ducks are the only good thing that any of them have had. Going to a preparatory school should be a good thing for them. But for most of them, it’s not. The new Ducks (who by the way, three of which are people of color, and one of which, is a woman) are immediately told that “their kind” is not welcome at Eden Hall. The Varsity team claim that they feel this way because the captain’s younger brother was not admitted onto the JV team because of the Ducks’ scholarships, but it’s very clear what they really mean. Russ commented that he’s the only black person on the whole campus earlier, and he, Luis Mendoza (The Sandlot’s Mike Vitar) and Ken Wu (Justin Wong) are the only people of color we see in the film. Change takes a toll on each member of the team. We see it the most in Charlie, but we also hear from Fulton on how the separation from his best friend, Dean Portman (Aaron Lohr), who decided not to enroll at Eden Hall, is taking a toll on him. Connie (Margerite Moreau) and Guy (Garrette Henson) have presumably broken up, as the two small scenes we get of them, they are arguing. It’s a transition period, one that the first year of high school often is. But it’s also a look on how a rich, white privileged world is vastly different than the one that the Ducks are used to.
Coach Orion seems like a hardass, especially when he tells Charlie at their first practice that he will no longer be “Captain Duck” (as coined by D2’s Gunnar Stahl, played by Scott Whyte, who now plays the level-headed Varsity goalie Scooter). This, to the Ducks, is a line in the sand. Ever since Bombay turned District 5 into the Ducks four years previous, Charlie has been their captain. They’re in a whole new environment, where the man who gave them so much happiness and so many friendships isn’t, and their “little Duck tricks” won’t work anymore. Orion thinks Charlie is a showoff, and perhaps he is. This Charlie is vastly different than the sweet, shy Charlie we see in D1 and D2. But this Charlie is older, has just been abandoned by a man he considered a father, and is being harassed on a daily basis for being, as Varsity Captain Reilly puts it, “white trash.” I find it hard to believe sometimes that fans can look at Charlie from the outside, and not see who he is on the inside. All of Charlie’s closest relationships that we see portrayed in this movie, are with women. His mother (who he, as a teenage boy, says “I love you” to in the final scene of the movie), his teammates, Connie and Julie, who he gets a lot more screentime with, and with new love interest, Linda (Margot Finley).
I think now is a great time to talk about the shockingly impressive way all of the female characters are portrayed in this series, particularly this movie, especially for a 90s sports film. Connie has always been a leader on and off the ice. She’s in a relationship with Guy, but it’s not her only character trait. Dubbed “the Velvet Hammer” by Averman (Matt Doherty), she stands up for herself, and for her shy teammates (she literally shoves Peter Mark - a character cut out of D2 and D3 for good reason - in D1 when he insults Charlie) and stands up to the entire Varsity team despite them telling her that they hope they can “fight” with her later. Julie “The Cat” Gaffney (Columbe Jacobsen) is the second best player on the Ducks, despite the little ice time (thanks, Bombay) we see her have. She is the first person to tell of the Varsity, telling Captain Reilly that his little brother “just wasn’t good enough.” She’s a huge facilitator in the fire ant prank and despite the very weird and out of character game she had against the Blake Bears, shows that she deserves the number one goalie slot that Reilly gives her - despite what Goldberg, and the obvious underlying sexism there, have to say. I’ve also always been very impressed with Charlie’s mother, Casey (Heidi Kling). Although she has a romance with Bombay in D1, she makes it clear from the get go that her first priority is Charlie. We know that she took the two of them away from an abusive situation, and she’s a goddamn hero for that. Her scenes in D3 are limited, but they always show her chastising Charlie’s antics and encouraging him to stay in school. It goes unsaid, but it’s clear that she knows that he’s not going to get an education this good in the problematic public school system. But according to Linda, Charlie’s love interest, the private school system is no better. The first time we see Linda, she is protesting the “outdated” Warriors team name. This was in a 1996 kids movie, no less. She holds her own against Charlie, calling him out when he’s wrong. No one aside from Charlie, and maybe Fulton, get much screentime or lines aside from Bombay and Orion, but her presence and the point of her character is clear - not every rich person agrees with the horrible things that wealthy people do.
Back to the plot.
When the Ducks receive their positions, they learn that Banks, as a freshman, has made Varsity. From an outside perspective, they seems obvious. Banks is the best player we see in any of the films, definitely miles better than the losers on Varsity, so it seems obvious that he would be promoted. But Banks is unhappy with this. Adam Banks is a fan favorite character, definitely due to the sweet, understated performance by Larusso, but we don’t see much of him. From what we do see of him though, he underwent a huge character arc from D1 to now. In D1, Banks goes against his father’s protests and joins the Ducks, claiming that he “just wants to play hockey.” Here in D3, we see that Banks is utterly miserable despite playing with some of the best players in the state, purely because he’s not with his friends. At the end of the film, he makes the (questionable) decision to rejoin the Ducks and go against the Varsity. But Varsity seems to feel that Banks fits in with them, for obvious reasons. He’s the only Duck who comes from an affluent background, and he’s definitely the most clean cut. Captain Reilly is visibly angry in the final showdown with the Ducks that they no longer have Banks on their side, as if he’s betrayed “his kind.”
The turning point of the film comes when after Charlie has quit the freshman team (no longer the Ducks), Hans, a father figure to the Ducks and Bombay, suddenly passes away. It’s an insanely dark moment for a Disney film, especially when Bombay returns to the funeral and reminds the Ducks that it was “Hans who taught them to fly” and Charlie storms off, crying. I think Joshua Jackson, in the Ducks films, as well as in Dawson’s Creek, is phenomenally good at portraying teenagers who wouldn’t normally be seen as leading men. Who let their emotions overtake them, who have anger issues, who deal with familial problems. Characters like that in leading roles were almost unheard of in the 90s, and in the upcoming scenes, it reminds us why this side of Charlie that we’ve seen throughout the movie is not the only side of Charlie.
Bombay takes Charlie to the rink to see Orion skating with his disabled daughter, who was injured in a car accident. He reveals to Charlie that Orion quit the NHL to take care of her, and this immediately changes Charlie’s opinion of him, but he’s still unconvinced about rejoining the team. The next scene is without question, the greatest and most important scene of the trilogy. The last two films spent way too much time telling us how great of a person Bombay was, how he was the Minnesota Miracle Man,despite us seeing so little of that onscreen. We see him making mistake after mistake, hurting the team, being an unjustified dick to those around him. But this scene more than makes up for all of that. I’ve put the quote from this scene below.
Bombay: I was like you, Charlie. When I played hockey, I was a total hot shot. I tried to take control of every game. I wound up quitting. So I tried the law. I ruled the courtroom, but inside, I’m a mess. Start drinking. Man, I was going down. But then this great thing happened, maybe the best thing ever - I got arrested and sentenced to community service. And there you were - Charlie and the Ducks. And as hard as I fought it, there you were. You gave me a life, Charlie, and I want to say thank you. I told Orion about all of this when I talked to him about taking over. I told him that you were the heart of the team and that you would learn something from each other. I told him that you were the real Minnesota Miracle Man.
Charlie: You did?
Bombay: I did. So be that man, Charlie. Be that man.
It’s a callback to D2, when Jan tells Bombay “Be that man, Gordon. Be that man.” This scene is flawless. Every good thing that has happened to the Ducks, came because of Charlie’s heart. It came because of that game when Charlie refused to cheat, and made Bombay see his wrongs. It came because of when Bombay first tried to quit the team, and seeing how hurt Charlie was, agreed to stay. It was Charlie who stepped out of the game against Iceland so that Banks could play. It was Charlie who found them Russ. Giving the credit to a young, emotionally unstable teenager, rather than their Emilio Estevez, hotshot Bombay, is the best thing this series ever did.
This movie, in my opinion, is nearly flawless. Every moment has been planned to make the same point - change sucks. Especially when you’re a teenager. Even more so when you’re a teenager with trauma.

AO3 Ask Game
I was tagged by @themarshalstale which, thank you so much! I feel like I always get missed on these (I know why, it’s been 84 years since I published anything but still). 1. How many works do you have on ao3?
46 it seems. Which...look I’m slow man so that’s not surprising. lol Also crippling depression does not make for much production, at least for me.
2. What’s your current AO3 wordcount?
309662 according to the stats.
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
So do I could only AO3 or in like life? lol I suppose it should only be on AO3 since this is an AO3 ask game. Hrm. Basically AO3 can be summed up as: Marvel (in several iterations - all Avengers related) Torchwood Highlander But isn’t it more fun to consider my entire fandom life, which, I’m sorry, I’m old so...yeah. Not all of this is was published and beyond that a lot is not available anymore...which is likely for the best. Highlander Star Wars Babylon 5 Ronin Warriors/Samurai Troopers Marvel (again, several iterations also of note Avengers and X-Men both count) Torchwood Star Trek LOTR Stargate (SG-1, SGA) Mortal Kombat I dabbled with the idea of Potter fic but never got past the ideas stage.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1: You rearrange me till I’m sane Clint finds himself spiraling into a deep depression after the Battle of New York...until the Winter Soldier ends up saving him and inadvertently giving him a new purpose – to save the man that the Soldier had once been – Bucky Barnes. Not one to be outdone, the Soldier decides that his new mission is to ensure that Clint remains alive himself. Protecting a blonde man with a self-destructive streak is somehow very familiar to him. Through the back and forth of who is saving whom they cross the country and learn more about themselves and each other – and perhaps find a reason for living. 2: Five Dates Bucky Didn’t Realize He Was on And the One He Planned Himself To say that Bucky was surprised when Clint kissed him was an understatement. But it was nothing compared to the shock he felt when he learned they'd been dating for months without him realizing it.Clint gets whisked away for a mission before they have time to talk and Bucky is left to figure things out on his own - hindsight being 20/20 he can't help but wonder how he missed things the first go around.
3: Puck Luck Bucky Barnes is used to the ups and downs of an NHL season. He's used to the unpredictability of the game, knows that bounces don't always go your way, but that doesn't make a broken hand in the final third of the season any easier to deal with. Especially not when he ends up with an impromptu roommate/personal assistant in the form of one Clint Barton - his agent, Natalia Romanova's (rather attractive) friend he hadn't known existed before his injury.
It's just for six to eight weeks - what could possibly happen in that span of time?
4: Loose Lips Launch Ships
Based on the following prompt: “We go to school together and I think you’re cute and apparently you’re also the pizza delivery guy and my little sibling opened the door screaming hey sibling! you know that kid you’re in love with? you really weren’t kidding when you said his jawline could cut steel holy shit-” Bucky is the pizza delivery guy. Clint's younger (foster) brother has a big mouth.
5: Indelible Bucky Barnes has a pretty decent life – a good job, good friends, a cat that adores him - but something is missing. He’s always found body art to be beautiful and inspiring, and on a whim (and with the hope that maybe he can find what he’s missing) he decides to take the plunge and get a tattoo. That's how he meets Clint Barton. Clint's talented and compassionate and there is an instant spark between the two of them. It's not long before Bucky finds himself wondering and wanting more from the relationship despite the ghosts of the past that crop back up. Because Clint makes him feel normal in a way he truly hasn't for years...
(this was pre-Alpine so I was totally chuffed when canon confirmed Bucky’s status as a crazy cat lady (affectionate).
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not.
I really really really want to do it but I often times don’t end up doing it. There are a few reasons. First, I am akwward AF and bad at interaction adn I feel like just saying thank you would be...not enough? Second - I often times tend to like...turtle (aka retreat into myself) when life gets Too Hard/Busy which happens a lot to me (sigh) and then I miss the vague window in my mind in which it would be okay to respond and then it’s even more weird. I do love and cherish all of them. Like there was one months ago that made me go “hmm...I didn’t think I was going to do a sequel to that fic (You rearrange me till I’m sane), timestamp glimpses sure but a sequel hadn’t come to mind” but then the comment made me think! So...who knows? lol Anyway, I literally have been rereading some in an effort to try and get myself going again. Know that if you have commented, I love you.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
At the moment? Probably: Look at you look at me Bucky's in love with Clint - problem is he's really not supposed to be. For Winterhawk Week 2019 - Forbidden Love (I really don’t want to give away the spin in the fic but...if you’re familiar with the Secret Avengers Vol 2 run circa 2013ish (aka when SHIELD initially ‘took control of the team’) that’s a bit of a hint as to the spin). Were it done, Torch Song would be up there. ;) Torch Song Clint is sent back in time, via an alien device, to 1938. While he tries to figure out how to get back home, he takes up singing and entertaining to make ends meet and does his best to not disrupt the timeline. Then he meets a 21 year old Bucky Barnes. --- A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship.
7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?
Does *wanting* to write crossovers count? lol I want, so badly, to do more crossovers and fusions (which...are kinda deeper versions of crossovers in a way). The only one I do have posted is a crossover between Highlander and Torchwood -
The Immortal Mr. Jones A series of vignettes (some long, some short) in the life of the newly immortal Ianto Jones. My most ambitions project that I have been working on since late 2011/early 2012 is a fusion of the Avengers with Stephen King’s the Stand. I will get that done at some point *shakes fist* The Stand, for those who don’t know it, is an epic 1000+ page novel about a flu epidemic (I know) that wipes out over 99% of the population and then two figures representing Good and Evil pull the survivors in two directions for a showdown. So basically it’s a non-powered modern AU set in that universe. It’s a passion and comfort project. lol
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yes. Well, minor bitching back when I was in a prior fandom because I tagged a pairing in a fic but it was pre-slash and not labeled as pre-slash. I got hate on...I think it was Torch Song? And I’ve gotten hate on tumblr re me and my fic in general as well. Fandom! *jazz hands* Oh! And I’ve also been hit by those reviewers within Winterhawk (among general Clint pairings actually) who like rate you on either number scales or the “meh” scale. Which isn’t hate exactly but...it’s passive aggressive bullshit because I can’t believe none of them realize at this point that the authors can see their bookmarks - you know?
9. Do you write smut?
Yes. Do I write it well? I have no idea. lol
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I am aware of. Well...there was, I think, one of those reposting sites that had a few fics on it but I don’t think it was being passed off as someone else’s? I can’t quite recall. It’s why I have a note on AO3 about reposting my work anyway.
11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not entirely, but sort of. Let me explain - I am part of a PBEM game; which for those unfamiliar since it’s a term that was most heavily in use 15-20 years ago, in which you basically do a round robin type writing thing but rather than everyone writing the same characters you write your own characters and you play off what other people have done. Another way of looking at it is it’s basically DnD without dice and written down rather than done out loud. You also don’t have to all be around at the same time. It’s a lot of fun and yes I have been in it for 20 years even though there aren’t many of us left but they are some of my dearest friends and fabulous writers. Wins all around. One of the other writers and I have actually toyed with the idea of doing a co-written fic actually, mostly because we work super well together and keep getting ideas for things but can’t really do them as rpgs since the pbem style isn’t used much anymore.
12. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Winterhawk probably. Though, let’s be real - Han & Leia are epic and amazing as are John & Delenn (from Babylon 5).
13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Does wanting to expand The Black Stallion books as a wee child count? lol Not much of that was written save for world building ideas but there was a great oral tradition of telling stories to my friends. Otherwise...maybe a tie between Star Wars and Highlander. Star Wars was a love since I was super young but the writing bug didn’t hit me until around the same time Highlander was a thing as well.
14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? You rearrange me till I’m sane for sure. Though Torch Song, if it were finished, would be tied I imagine (I suck at picking favorites). Honorable mention to Puck Luck and Indelible. Tagging: I have seen this like a million times (okay 5) so I feel like everyone has been tagged already that I know. But...I guess... @vexbatch @crazycatt71 @heartonfirewrites and @disruptedvice sorry if anyone has been tagged before.

See you soon
So the Cale blurb turned out differently than I anticipated once I started writing but like, whatever, I think you’ll like this better. It’s also like a three page google doc, so I’m not sure if this counts as a blurb or not, but oh well.
Warning that there’s mentions of quaratine (indirectly) since this takes place the night of the NHL awards.
Flashbacks are in italics.
I hope you like it!
_________________
“And the winner of the 2019-2020 Calder Memorial Trophy is,” the announcer says, you glued to the TV as you prayed you would hear his name, “Cale Makar!”
You start screaming to your parents that Cale won, jumping up and down as your boyfriend’s face appeared on your TV screen for him to talk about how happy and honored he was that he won the award for the league’s best rookie. As soon as the awards were done, you had planned to Facetime with each other, and now there was even more reason to celebrate.
You wish you were there with him; he was home in Calgary and you were back in Springfield, Massachusetts, home from school because of the pandemic, 9 hours away from him by plane, on the other side of the continent. “Tell him congrats for us, sweetie,” your mom tells you, kissing your cheek before you head off to your room to call Cale.
As soon as his face appears on your computer screen, rosey cheeks and all, your heart skipped a beat. You had been videochatting as much as you could, but with him playing in the bubble in Edmonton, the calls were much less frequent than either of you had wanted them to be.
“Hey, baby,” he says, in a soft, kind voice.
“Hey veggie boy,” you call him the nickname you had been calling him since you met.
Everytime you see him, you can’t help but think about that night you met.
You were at a party in the Southwest area of UMass during your freshman year, not really wanting to be there, but dragged out by your roommate and the other guys and girls on your floor in one of the Orchard Hill dorms. Not a big party person, you were off to the side, nursing the drink your roommate forced in your hands upon arrival, watching the scene of drunk college students unfold around you.
“Not much of a party person, either?” you hear someone ask you, taking your attention away from the two girls owning two guys in a game of beer pong. You look to see Cale Makar, the freshman on the hockey team everyone was excited for. Hockey East was arguably one of the biggest and best college hockey conferences, at least in your opinion, and hearing someone like Cale had committed to your school was exciting. You thought you would see him play on the ice; UMass had thirty thousand undergraduate students, what were the chances of meeting him?
“Nah, not really. It’s more fun to watch.” You introduce yourselves, trying to play it cool on the boy you were already forming a crush on. You spent the night thinking up the backstories of the people around you. Whoever came up with the most absurd one would buy breakfast off campus the next morning.
“Y/N?” you hear Cale ask, bringing you out of your memory and back to reality. “Are you alright? You look upset.”
Looking at your own face on the screen, you hadn’t realized the smile that was on your face when he first picked up was gone, tears starting to form in your eyes. “Yeah, I’m just thinking.”
“About what?”
“The night we met. How far you’ve come,” you tell him, “How far away you are.”
His smile fades away as well, sadness covering his face, practically forcing the tears down your cheeks. You hated that you were making him sad, especially since he just won an award. “I miss you so much,” he whispers, sounding like he was choking back a sob as well.
“I miss you, too,” you manage to let out. “But, hey, babe, you won the fucking Calder! I’m so proud of you. You deserved it.”
A small smile returns to his face. “Thanks, baby. Did you hear me thanking you?”
You chuckle, wiping the tears from your cheeks. “I was too busy screaming to pay attention,” you admit. “The Avs have already posted a video, so I’ll watch it when we’re off.”
You two spend hours catching up on life since the last time you talked to each other a week ago. You had just started your senior year at school, counting down the days before you could graduate and move to Denver to be with Cale, like you had been talking about the last three years.
The night Cale came back from the Frozen Four game in Buffalo was heartbreaking. It was one of the first nights he didn’t want to talk about hockey, coming to your room and getting into your bed without saying a word to you or any of your suitemates. You had seen him after a tough loss before, but he was never like this. It was never them getting shut out in the national championship.
“Colorado wants me to start playing with them in the rest of their playoff run,” he finally says, running his hands through your hair as you try to concentrate on the readings you had to do for your class the next morning.
You were used to him travelling for games, but that was with him living in Massachusetts, not in Colorado. “Oh,” you let out, not sure what else to say. “When are you going to join them?”
“I sign the contract tomorrow, and they have a game the next day.”
You sit up, pulling yourself off his chest to look at him, “Tomorrow?”
He doesn’t look at you, fidgeting with your sheets instead. “Yeah. I want to go, but,” he stops looking up at you and taking your face in his hands. He runs the pads of his thumbs on your cheeks, you reaching up to touch his hands, “I don’t want to leave you.”
“Cale, you have to. If they want you, this is your dream. I’ll be fine.”
“Yeah, but will I be?” he asks, a small laugh escaping his lips. “I love you,” he says, pulling you in for a kiss. It was soft, sweet, you could tell he felt bad about leaving you. It was the possibility of being your last kiss for who knows only how long that made him kiss you with urgency.
When he finally pulls away, he keeps his forehead pressed against yours. “I’ll still see you when you play in Boston; it’s only two hours away. And, we can call, we can text, or snapchat, or Facetime; we have each other in our pockets at all times,” you try to reassure him, wiping the tears from his cheeks.
“When you graduate, will you move to Denver, or wherever I’m playing?”
“You think we’ll still be together by then? That’s two more years.”
“I hope so. I don’t plan on stopping loving you.”
“Hey, Cale,” you ask him after sitting there just working, him watching you in the background like he used to when you were still at school together, “Will I like Denver? When I move out there?”
A smile forms on his face at the idea of you two finally being together again. “Yeah. You’ll love it. I do, at least. But it’ll be even better when you’re there. I can’t believe I haven’t been able to see you since May,” he says, looking off to the side as if to not let you see him cry.
“I know,” you swallow another bout of tears coming on, “But, hey, I’ll be moving out there in June. That’ll go by so fast,” you tell him, excited at the prospect of seeing him in person again.
“You promise?”
“I mean, I can’t control how you perceive time,” you joke, smiling at the sight of him throwing his head back in laughter. “But I have to watch some video lectures for class, so I’ve gotta go. I’ll see you soon?”
“Tomorrow?” he asks, excited by your nodding in agreement. “I love you. I’ll see you soon.”

Thoughts on KK playing on wing?
i’m not sure how much i like it, but i definitely don’t think it’s the end of the world like people on twitter and reddit are acting. there’s a couple of things going on here.
is center a more important position than wing? i think you could arguably say that center is a more difficult position to play well, and that centers are more “valued” by teams than wingers and why two-way centers who can provide reliable offense can command such high contracts. you can see the narrative with nick too (he started out on rw but played his way into a 2c position by the end of his first season). obviously, wingers are still valuable pieces and a really skilled winger is dangerous as fuck. also, the skillsets that you develop in both positions do translate from one to another, even if it’s not 100%. the focus is different, the places you end up battling for the puck are different. kk has played wing in finland before, so it’s not completely foreign to him.
is this a demotion? i think a lot of habs fans panic seeing any young center moved to wing because it’s got shades of galchenyuk, a player who the habs arguably mismanaged (look at the way he’s been rehabilitated with the leafs for contrast). kk gets moved to wing and fans hear bergevin saying re: galchenyuk he isn’t able to play this position consistently. the reasons kk is being moved to wing are not the same, though. he has been playing as a center in the nhl (or, briefly, the ahl) since he was eighteen years old. he had an amazing rookie season, a sophomore slump, and is having an amazing season under a coach who knows how to utilize him properly. this is literally only because of a serious injury to one of the top wingers on the team, at a time when other players who play that position are out. so i don’t think you can say that this is a demotion and i don’t think either ducharme or kk view it that way.
the importance of gally. gallagher is probably one of the most important players for the habs. when the tatar - danault - gally line is on fire, they are absolutely dominant even when they’re not scoring. like you can pretty much look at any 5v5 metric and see it. even when they’re not officially designated as a top line, everyone knows who they are and what they can do. and going beyond that, gally is the heart and soul of the habs. those are big shoes to fill. so i think the fact that ducharme wants to try kk in that spot says a lot about his trust in kk’s abilities. kk himself said, “it’s an honor” to play with those guys.
will this hurt his development? one of the things that it seems people are freaking out about are also galchenyuk related, with fears that this will hurt kk’s development and set him back. i don’t think it will, partially because he’s a good player and a smart player, but also because i don’t think anyone is viewing this as permanent. the longest it would go would be during gallagher’s absence, and i think that’s only if it actually does seem like the line is clicking.
do i think this is the first thing they should have tried? i don’t know. i think personally i would have maybe preferred they tried to bring frolik back in and juggle around the rest of the rw they have--i think i made a joke in the original habs primer like “did you get enough rw, marc?????” because they have so many of them. it’s not like they don’t have options, although those options are limited a little more now with armia still recovering from covid. i’m willing to give ducharme the benefit of the doubt at least for a few games because:
ultimately, ducharme is going to do what he thinks is best for the team. and whether that’s having kk at wing or trying to juggle around the rest of the lineup, will remain to be seen. although he’s maybe not as quick to blow things up as some of us would have hoped he’d be (looking at you, management of weber’s minutes and keeping weber and chiarot together), he has shown he’s willing to move things around and break up lines that aren’t producing. all of this is in service of one thing: icing the best team he can ice. and i think this roster buys into that and are willing to play up and down the lineup, wherever they need to play, without egos because they want the same thing. they want to be the best version of the team they can be, and they want to win.
i posted this quote from brian wilde the other day and i think it’s relevant here:
as watchers of prospects, we tend to over-critique every single game or decision concerning them. why? human nature because of small sample sizes. it’s all we got to assess, so we over-assess it. also, hope. we want so much for them, so we get defensive.
i absolutely understand that impulse, especially with young guys like kk. i feel the same way about nick, honestly--i know that the movements up and down the lineup are because ducharme is putting him where he feels he can be best utilized, but i’m so fond of him as a person and a player that even though i know that logically, i still feel that little knee jerk reaction of but that’s not fair.
so the conclusion: i think it could work out just fine. i don’t think it’s going to be anywhere near a longterm thing. i don’t think it’s a demotion. and whether it will last even during gally’s absence will remain to be seen.

Nervous Regrets - Tyler Seguin - Part 27
Word Count: 5,831
POV: Reader
Warnings: Total fluff, language
Notes: Here we are at Part 27, never thought this story would get this far, but here we are. These two are finally getting hitched. It’s not the big wedding, but that will come. Hope you guys enjoy. Happy Reading.
The sun was out and the birds were chirping, or maybe that’s just how you were viewing the world on New Year’s day knowing that you were marrying Tyler in just two short days. He was still sleeping when you slipped out of the bedroom, to survey the damage from the party. It was about ten in the morning and you saw a few stray pairs of shoes lying around, so you made sure not to make too much noise for anyone who had decided to stay. The house was relatively clean all things considered, which was more than likely due to your best friend. You picked up your phone, hoping that it wasn’t too early to call her.
“Hello.” Her voice sounded a bit groggy and you realized that you’d woken her up.
“Shit, Jenna, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“It’s ok. What’s up?” It was just like her, to put you first.
“It’s nothing, I just need to ask you something. Call me when you’re actually wake.” Maybe you should go back to bed yourself. You hadn’t got that much sleep, but you were bursting with excitement and just couldn’t lay there anymore.
“I’m awake now, so just hit me with it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Ugh, (Y/N) you are killing me here. Just tell me already.” She was whispering all be it harshly at you.
“Are you with Jamie right now?” The fact that both yours and Tyler’s best friends were together, was sending you on cuteness overload.
“Yes.” You could almost see her blushing. “So please, stop leaving me in suspense.”
“Alright, alright, sorry. First off, you and Jamie are amazing for cleaning this place up. Thank you guys so much.” They really were the greatest.
“It really wasn’t anything, but you’re welcome. Please tell me that’s not the only reason you called and woke me up.”
“No, it’s not. So what are you doing on Thursday?”
“Like this Thursday? Umm..I’m not one hundred percent sure. I mean I have work of course, but I don’t think anything after that. Why what do you need?”
“Well do you think you could get out of work early?” Before she could answer you, you continued. “Because I kind of need you to be my maid of honor.”
“Why are we going dress shopping? Cause I think you should wait until after the baby for that. Did you guys even set a date? I mean like I know it’s this summer but…”
She tried to say more, but you stopped her. “Actually we’re getting married that day.”
“What!!!” She practically screamed in the phone, and you knew she probably had just woken up Jamie. “Did you just say you’re getting married?”
“Mmmhmm.”
“Oh my god!” In the background, you could hear Jamie mumbling. “Are your parents coming up? What about Tyler’s? Oh my god, you need a dress!”
Her mind was running a mile a minute kind of like yours. It was so great that she shared your excitement. "No, we’re not telling anyone, including our parents.”
“What? Why?”
“Well we talked about things last night, and Tyler really wants us to be married before the baby comes. And well really, there’s no time like the present. We’re still going to do the big wedding this summer, so you are not getting out of maid of honor duties there. We just want this to be us and well you and Jamie.”
“Oh my god, that’s so freaking sweet of you. I’m so honored. But you’re really not telling your parents?”
“Well…umm…we think they might be upset because we didn’t invite them. We just really want to do this for us.” You lowered your tone as you revealed the next part. “Honestly, I hadn’t thought about it much but Tyler really wants the baby’s birth certificate to read Tyler and (Y/N) Seguin. And I have to agree with him that it would be nice.” You started to tear up just thinking about it. Never in a million years did you think something like that would bother him. “So please don’t tell anyone. I mean, of course, tell Jamie; though I’m sure Tyler will call him when he gets up.”
“Of course I won’t say anything. Though I’ll have to tell Jamie, since he’s laying here just waiting for me to get off the phone, now that I woke him up.”
“Oh! Tell him I’m sorry and thanks for cleaning up last night.”
“Will do. I’ll call you later and we can figure out where to go shopping for a dress for you.”
You hadn’t really thought about that part, but you supposed you couldn’t wear legging to your wedding. “Ok sounds like a plan. Talk to you later.”
“Bye Mrs. Seguin.” It felt so weird for someone to call you that, but damn if it didn’t have a nice ring to it. There was so much nervous energy inside you that you decided to finish cleaning up the house. Within the hour, you had the house mostly cleaned up, except for the bedrooms and movie room where a couple people still slept.
Tyler stumbled out of your bedroom shortly after. “Babe, did you seriously do all this already? I was totally going to help you.”
“I know, but I couldn’t sleep.” You also thought you were experiencing a little bit of nesting that came along in the later stages of pregnancy. Which is why you were slightly panicking when you thought about the nursery being done, though you’d push that thought aside knowing everything was well in hand with the designer.
“Is anyone still here?”
“Yeah, I tiptoed upstairs and there are probably about seven or eight people up there. Could be more, I wasn’t going to intrude.” A door or two was closed and you were not about to go checking on those rooms. As long as no one was doing anything in your nursery, they could do anything else in the other rooms. You’d be sure to have all the sheets cleaned after last night anyhow.
Tyler came over and planted a kiss on your lips, before sitting down at the island after grabbing a drink. “I’m sorry about that. I thought they’d all be gone by now.”
“It’s no biggie, babe. I’d rather see people stay here than drink and drive. Besides, people used to stay here all the time when we had parties before. So what’s the big deal.”
He shrugged his shoulders before answering. “I don’t know. I mean our lives are just sort of different now.”
“True and they’re about to get even more different than they are now.” So, maybe he had a point, but you doubted you’d be throwing parties like this next year with the baby here; so why not enjoy it now while you could.
He grabbed your hips and pulled you close. “Yes they are, and I for one am extremely happy about it.”
“Really? You’re not going to miss all the late-night partying and drinking?” It was a fear that you never gave voice to, but one that you carried around all the same.
“No, not at all. Not when I have you two. You guys are the best thing to ever happen to me.” You leaned down and kissed him, letting your mouth linger there for an extended time.
When you pulled back suddenly, he frowned at you. “Oh, I almost forgot. I called Jenna, she and Jamie are on board for Thursday.”
“You told Jamie?”
“Well not intentionally, and I said you were still going to call him. Jenna was with him when I called, and when I told her the news; she kind of woke him up.” You chuckled remembering the conversation. “Needless to say, I caught her by surprise. Don’t worry I told her not to say anything to anyone.”
“I’m not worried. I already told you I want the world to know you’re my wife, but maybe not before we tell our families.”
You went about making breakfast for the two of you, as slowly the rest of your houseguests woke up. Most of them were hungover and headed out of the house as soon as they got up. A couple of the single players on the team stayed to watch the Winter Classic which was coming on in a few hours. Tyler snuck off and called Jamie, giving him a few details about your trip to city hall. When he mentioned the guys were still at the house, he and Jenna headed over to join everyone. It was almost like a mini party.
The boys were all gathered around the tv, while you and Jenna made shopping plans and talked about the baby. Jenna was your Lamaze partner when Tyler wasn’t in town and she always double-checked the schedule with you, in order not to miss a class. You were thankful to have your best friend at your side, as you were deathly afraid you were going to go into labor when Tyler was on a road trip. March sixth was your due date, and as it stood now, Tyler would be home; but you could never be too cautious. Especially since they said your first baby usually came late.
The two of you were absorbed in conversation, not really paying attention to the guys in the living room. Until you heard them start to cheer. There were ‘hell ya’s’ and ‘are you fucking kidding’ and of course ‘holy shit.’ You assumed at first it was some sort of call, that was either missed or something that happened in the game, but when you looked on the screen it was the NHL commissioner being interviewed. “Babe, did you hear that?” Tyler’s voice broke through the commotion.
“No, what happened?”
It was Jamie who answered. “We got the Winter Classic. It’s going to be in Dallas next year.” It was sort of unbelievable news given you lived in Texas, which was not really a place you thought of when you were going to hold an outdoor hockey game.
“Oh my god, that’s amazing.” You truly meant that it was an incredible opportunity for the team and you could see the excitement in all their faces.
Tyler moved from the living room, into the kitchen then. “Babe do you know what this means?”
Was it too obvious to say that they would be playing outside? Instead, you opted to say, “No?”
“We’ll be able to skate with the baby outside at the family skate.” The excitement on his face was contagious. He was literally grinning from ear to ear. “I mean, of course, it won’t be our kid’s first time on the ice and all. But they could be skating by then, ya know?” He must have seen you frown or something because before you could say anything, he added. “Of course it won’t be by themselves. I’ll hold their little hands and stuff.” His hands were cradling your bump as if he could will the child to come out with skates on or something. “This is going to be even better than the family skate at Christmas.”
Reaching up, you kissed him quickly. “Slow down hun. We gotta get this little one born first, then you can take the baby shopping for skates.” You didn’t want to admit it, but you could just see Tyler skating with your little one outside on the ice; the thought warmed your heart.
“I gotta say, Tyler’s right. It would be amazing to skate with your baby in a game like that.” You hadn’t realized Jamie had come into the kitchen and had his arms wrapped around Jenna. Mentally, you had your fingers crossed that the two would still be together next year.
“See babe, it’s not just me.”
“Oh, I agree with you, Ty. It’s going to be amazing. I’m just taking it one step at a time here.”
It was his turn to kiss you. This time a little more passionately than you had him. “Oh I know babe, and trust me I can’t wait for all the first with this little one. Including the first time we get to see him or her.” The rest of the afternoon was spent watching the game and then making dinner for everyone. It was totally impromptu, but no one really cared about what you served; until everyone decided to call it a night.
The following day, you and Jenna set out to find something to wear for your wedding. There weren’t a ton of maternity clothing stores that sold white dresses, big surprise there. Somehow Jenna convinced you to stop into a bridal store. They too didn’t have a ton of maternity dresses, but they did have a cute short white off the shoulder dress which was made partially from some form of spandex. It fit pretty tight across your bump, but Jenna insisted that it looked adorable on you and that a bouquet of flowers would cover anything up for photos. You couldn’t really argue with that point and after a couple hours of shopping, you weren’t sure you were going to find anything else on this short of notice. So you paid for the dress and headed home.
The whole shopping experience had left you exhausted; especially when you didn’t really have options. The only good thing that came of the whole thing was that you decided you wanted to do a maternity shoot, both with Tyler and without him. Thankfully, another one of your friends was a photographer, so you had an in there, but you totally wanted to do some shots when you were in Cabo on the beach. The only answer to your problem was to invite her, but you wanted to run it by Tyler first.
When he woke up from his nap, you decided to hit him with the idea; not knowing if he would go for it. “Ty, can I ask you a question?” You asked, lying down on the bed with him, as he pulled you in to cuddle with him.
“Babe, you know you can ask me anything?”
“So I saw this idea when we were shopping. There were some cards for photographers at the maternity shops, stating that they would do a pre-baby photo shoot. So like one, are you interested in that?” You paused waiting for him to answer.
“Yeah babe, I’m totally down for that.”
“And you’re ok with being in some of the pictures too?” You pulled back hoping to read his face.
“Of course. Babe, I want to document every step of this.”
“Great! So, I have this idea.” He side-eyed you before you could even get anything else out. “It’s not like that. I just thought we could get some really great pictures in Cabo, but I obviously don’t know any photographers there. So I thought maybe we could have Anna go with us. There’s an extra room at the house isn’t there?”
“There’s actually a couple since it’s only Brett and Liv and Jamie and Jenna coming now. So yeah go ahead invite her and her boyfriend to come along.”
Leaning into him, you kissed him hard. “Thanks, babe, you’re literally the best boyfriend in the whole world.”
He pressed you against his body, before saying. “That’s going to be the best husband in twenty-four hours.” Just thinking that the two of you would be married tomorrow, brought a huge smile to your face. “So did you find something to wear, or should I have the JP come here to marry us so you don’t have to wear anything.” He didn’t hide the fact that he found that idea appealing.
“Tyler!” You said while swatting at him at the same time. “Thankfully, I found one so we don’t have to go with that plan.”
“Damn, I thought that it was perfect. I could just throw you on the bed as soon as you say I do and consummate our marriage right away.”
Rolling your eyes at him, you told him. “I don’t think consummating a marriage is a thing anymore.”
“Oh, it’s going to be a thing for us. In fact, I think we should practice right now.” Over the next hour, he proceeded to show you what his definition of consummate was. The only reason it wasn’t longer, was because he had to get ready for the game. Tyler played one of the best games he’d had all season that night, scoring two goals. Jamie, of course, chirped him as the four of you made your way out to the car, saying that maybe he shouldn’t get married since he was on a streak.
Tyler didn’t want to hear any of it. “I only had a good game, because my soon-to-be wife and I were practicing for once we’re married.”
“Tyler!” You swore you turned about ten different shades of red.
“What, it’s not like they don’t know.” All you could do was just shake your head at the man. “In fact, I bet I have a better game after we’re married.”
“Gonna pull a hat trick, eh Seggy?” Chubbs taunted back.
“You never know man.”
“Alright you two, that’s enough.” Jenna chastised them. “We have actual shit that needs to be done before tomorrow.” She grabbed your hand and pulled you towards her car.
“Where are you guys going?” Tyler inquired.
“To my place,” Jenna stated as if this was common knowledge. “Unless you’re planning on staying at Jamie’s tonight.”
Tyler furrowed his brow in confusion, before asking. “And why would I stay at Jamie’s?”
“Because it’s bad luck to see the bride before the wedding.” She held up her hand before he could say anything more. “And considering your fiancé is pregnant, you really should be staying with Jamie tonight, so that she can sleep in her own bed. I can sleep in the spare room, as long as the sheets are clean from New Year’s Eve.”
“Wait, why am I being punished?” This time it was Jamie who voiced his displeasure about the sleeping arrangements.
“You’ll survive.” Was Jenna’s quick answer before kissing her newly acquired boyfriend.
This was the first time you’d heard of Jenna’s plan as well, and while you were sure that nothing bad would happen if you stayed with Tyler tonight; there was a part of you that loved the idea of this little tradition. “I still don’t see why (Y/N) and I can’t just stay at the house and then meet you guys at the courthouse tomorrow.”
“Do you really want to tempt fate?” It was a bit of an excessive threat from your best friend, but she was not having any of it from Tyler at the moment.
“Well, it’s not like I’m going to be a runaway groom or anything.”
“True, nor do I think (Y/N) will leave you standing at the courtroom, per se. But what if she goes into labor before you can be married?” Well shit, she didn’t need to go to that extreme; you were sure everything would be fine with the baby. “I’m telling you, we need to at least follow some kind of a tradition for this wedding.”
“God, you really know how to guilt a man, don’t you?” Tyler answered her, a hint of distress in his voice. He set his bag on the ground and immediately grabbed you, more to reassure himself that everything was fine with the baby than anything else.
“Ty, we’re fine.” You said hoping to comfort him. “Though I would like to have a little bit of tradition at this wedding. So if you don’t mind, I’m going to stay with Jenna tonight. I just have to stop at the house and get my things.”
He sighed heavily. “No, you guys stay at the house. I’ll stay at Jamie’s.” He kissed you on the nose then. “Why don’t you two follow us to the house, so I can at least have a car ride home with my girl, then I’ll grab what I need and head over to Jamie’s.”
“Sounds good. We’ll see you shortly.” Jenna answered as she and Jamie headed to their car.
“Have I told you, that you need a new best friend.”
“I heard that.” She shouted back.
“You were meant to.” God, sometimes you felt like you were dealing with two-year-olds, which you supposed would help when your little one hit that age. He leaned his forehead against yours. “Are you sure you want to spend the night apart?”
“I don’t want to spend the night without you, but…I do want to have a little tradition in our marriage. We’ve already broken the whole, get married then have a baby thing.”
“No, we haven’t, this little one isn't here yet.” He said with a wink. “But I get it.” His lips caressed yours then, before pulling apart way too soon. “Alright, we better get going before the bridesmaidzilla gets to the house before us.” You chuckled softly as the two of you broke apart to get in the car. His hand remained in yours throughout the whole drive, twisting your engagement ring every now and then. It suddenly hit you, that while you would be exchanging vows; you wouldn’t be placing a wedding band on his finger. You’d only get to do that in a few months when you had the big ceremony. It was probably for the best considering that you were trying to keep things quiet, and it would make your summer wedding a bit more special for you and Tyler.
Before you could give thought to anything else, you were pulling in the driveway. “Having second thoughts yet?”
“About our wedding?” You asked Tyler, knowing that’s not what he meant when he asked that question.
“That’s not what I meant.” Worried etched across his face. “But tell me you’re not.”
You burst out in a fit of giggles. “No silly, I was just teasing you.”
“Oh thank god. You had me worried there for a split second.”
You went up on your toes to cup his cheek and look deep into his dark brown eyes. “There is not a single doubt in my mind that I want to be your wife. I love you so much, Tyler Seguin.” His mouth came down on yours in a crushing kiss. It stole your breath away and told you without words how much he loved you in return.
“God, I love you. I can’t wait until tomorrow.”
You broke away from him and swatted his ass. “Then go get your stuff. The sooner we fall asleep, the quicker tomorrow comes.” He had most of his things gathered by the time Jamie and Jenna got to your place. Jenna obviously knew he was going to give in to you staying at the house, as she had her dress and a bag with her. The three of you chatted about nothing of consequence until Tyler was finally ready. He tossed his garment bag over the sofa, before coming up and grabbing you around your ever-expanding waist. “We should order something to eat or something before we go.”
“Quit postponing the inevitable Seguin. You’ll see her in just a few short hours.” Jamie teased him.
“You’re just as ruthless as she is.” He said motioning to Jenna. “You two deserve each other.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Jamie replied back, as he pressed Jenna close to his body.
“Ok babe, time for you to go, so I can get some beauty sleep.” You said turning in Tyler’s arms so you could kiss him goodbye. Of course, it lasted longer than intended, until Jamie not so discreetly coughed, drawing both yours and Tyler’s attention.
“I should’ve asked Rad’s to stand up for me instead of you.”
“Ty, be nice.” You told your fiancé, for he couldn’t ask for a better friend than Jamie.
“It’s alright (Y/N) I can take it, from this asshat. I’m just going to make him sleep on the couch.” You knew Jamie was kidding, but Tyler still scowled at him. “Alright loverboy, let’s get going.”
Tyler just held you a little tighter, instead of letting go. “I’m gonna miss you baby.”
“I’ll miss you too, but I’ll see you in a few hours.” Pecking his lips, you added. “Now get out of here.”
“Bossy already and I haven’t even said I do.” He grabbed his bag, then kissed you one more time for good measure. “Love you, baby.”
“Love you too. See you tomorrow.”
“See you soon Mrs. Seguin.”
Jenna and you both headed to bed shortly after the guys left, so you were up ontime to get ready for the ceremony. Jenna scooted out to go with pick up your bouquet of flowers, while you started on your hair and makeup. The morning flew, and soon you were headed to the courthouse. Nervous excitement bubbled up inside of you, as Jenna drove downtown, and before you knew it you were pulling in the parking garage.
“Do you think they’re here yet?” You asked Jenna, as you debated about getting out of the car.
“Knowing them, they’ll probably be late.”
“True.” You were fidgeting with your engagement ring, just twirling it up and down your finger.
“Come on, let’s get you inside and married before you twist your finger off.” A soft chuckle escaped your lips as you opened the car door. The air was crisp, but the sun was shining; you couldn’t ask for a more perfect wedding day. The sound of heels clicking on the tiled floor, echoed as you made your way to the judge's chambers, but as you rounded the corner Tyler was standing there waiting for you. He was dressed in a charcoal grey double-breasted suit, with a pristine white shirt, accentuated by a black tie. You’d never seen him look more handsome then he did at that moment. “Ugh, you’re not supposed to see each other before the ceremony.”
Vaguely you heard Jamie answer her. “The way he’s looking at her; I don’t think you need to worry.” He had yet to see you fully, as you had on a long winter coat, but he still hadn’t taken his eyes off you, the most brilliant smile you’d ever seen graced his face.
“You look…” You started to say more, but he cut you off.
“It’s nothing compared to you. You’re so beautiful (Y/N).” Your throat went dry at his praise and you swallowed hard against all the emotions threatening to come to the surface at that moment.
“You haven’t even seen my dress yet.”
“I don’t need to. You could literally wear a brown bag right now and still be the most gorgeous woman in the world.” A blush rose to your cheeks, but before you could say anything the door to judge’s room opened.
“Mr. Seguin, the judge is ready for you.” The four of you walked into the chamber, where you quickly removed your coat, placing it on a nearby chair for later, then Jenna handed you over your bouquet. It was simple, a gathering of all white roses with a smattering of greens here and there.
When you turned you saw Tyler’s jaw literally drop. You knew what he saw, long hair loosely curled, so it framed perfectly around your face. Soft subtle makeup, just to accentuate your natural features. The white off the shoulder dress, flowed across your bosom, just skating against the top of your breasts. Its tight-fitting bodice told everyone that your child was growing inside of you, but to you, it was only a reminder of the love you and Tyler shared. When he finally recovered, Tyler said. “You literally just took my breath away.”
He took a step towards you then, his intentions clear as he leaned into you. “Well, shall we get this wedding started. Oh, I see the groom is getting an early start.” The judge’s voice halted his progress and made you turn about fifteen different shades of red.
Tyler, of course, recovered easily turning to the judge and saying. “Can you blame me, sir? She’s absolutely gorgeous.”
“Yes indeed, you’re a very lucky man.” The Judge looked to be about in his seventies, and as he grabbed a binder from his desk, he motioned you all forward. “Ok if you could just stand here off to my left Miss (Y/LN) and Mr. Seguin, yes right there would be great and your witnesses beside you. Yes, that’s perfect. Now let’s begin.” He adjusted his glasses, then opened the folder in his hands. “Marriage is an institution not to be entered into lightly. So I ask you both, that as you enter into this union to always treat each other with respect and love. Give your marriage the tenderness, gentleness and caring that each of you deserves. When times, become rough, as they always do, remember to focus on your love and the road that brought you here today. And may this day be only the beginning of the joy that you will share together for the rest of your lives.”
Tyler’s eyes were solely focused on you and yours on his, as the judge continued on with his words. “Tyler Seguin, I ask you, will you take this woman to be your wedded wife? Will you love and comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others keep yourself only unto her as long as you both shall live?”
Tyler had a hold of your free hand, and he gently squeezed it, before saying. “I will.”
“(Y/F/L/N), I ask you, will you take this man to be your wedded husband? Will you love and comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health and forsaking all others keep yourself only unto him as long as you both shall live?
A smile crossed your face, as your voice rang out. “I will.” Both of you were beaming at each other, as the first part of your vows were done.
The judge's voice continued, “Since it is your intention to enter into marriage, I ask that you join your right hands and before these witnesses declare your love for one another.” You handed Jenna your bouquet then joined hands with Tyler. “Ok now repeat after me.” He said the words and Tyler repeated them.
“I, Tyler Seguin, take you (Y/F/L/N) to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as we both shall live.” Tears trickled down your face, as you couldn’t hold your emotions at bay any longer. Your voice wobbled a little, solely from all the emotions you were feeling when it was your turn to repeat the words back to Tyler. His eyes welled up, and a tear slid down his cheek as you said.
"I, (Y/F/L/N), take you Tyler Seguin to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as we both shall live." As soon as you said the last word, you smiled brilliantly at Tyler.
“And now for the rings.” The judge’s asked.
“Oh but we don’t…” You started to say. But the next thing you knew Jamie, was handing over two rings to the judge. “Where did you..”
Tyler could see the confusion on your face, for you didn’t think the two of you would be doing this part of the ceremony. He leaned in to whisper, “I’ll tell you about it later.”
“Ok, Tyler please take the ring and place it on (Y/N)’s finger and repeat these words.” The judge announced, breaking through your thoughts.
Tyler took the ring in his hand, you could see the band was slim, with tiny diamonds all around it. The perfect compliment to your engagement ring. He slowly placed it on your left hand saying. “(Y/N) take this ring as a sign of my commitment and fidelity to you.”
It was your turn again, as the judge handed you a dark band Tyler must have picked out for himself. “Tyler, take this ring as a sign of my commitment and fidelity to you.”
After you exchanged rings, the judge proceeded. “Tyler and (Y/N) in so much as the two of you have agreed to live in matrimony, have promised your commitment to each other by these vows, and the joining of your hands and the giving of these rings, by the authority vested in me by the State of Texas, I now pronounce you Husband and Wife. Not that I need to tell you this but, you may kiss your bride.”
Tyler gave you one last loving look before his lips were on yours. He molded his mouth to yours, the kiss sweet and loving mimicking the vows you had just spoken. You felt as if it could’ve gone on forever, but yet you both broke apart all too soon given your surroundings. The judge’s final words were, “It is my honor to present to you for the first time, Mr. and Mrs. Tyler Seguin.” Jamie and Jenna clapped and cheered for you. And as the well wishes died down, it was back to business. “Now if I can get you both to sign here and here.” You and Tyler signed where the Judge indicted. Then Jamie and Jenna stepped forward. “Ok, you two are here and here.” After everyone signed, the Judge handed the papers over to Tyler. “And now it’s official on January 3, 2019, you are officially a married couple.” He moved to shake Tyler’s hand, then came over and hugged you. “Congratulations Mrs. Seguin.” A smile covered your face and you had a feeling it wouldn’t be going away for a long, long time.
Jenna snapped a few pictures of you and Tyler with the Judge, then just the two of you. The judge’s assistant came in and took pictures of all of you before the four of you headed back outside to go to dinner and celebrate. You joined Tyler in his car, as Jamie and Jenna took the other promising to meet you at the restaurant shortly. The whole walk to the car, Tyler never let go of your hand, and when you got there, he twirled you into his arms. “Are you happy Mrs. Seguin?”
Bringing your hands around his neck, you brought his face close to yours. “This is literally the happiest day of my life. And what about you Mr. Seguin, are you good with being a married man now?”
“Oh babe, I’m better than good. I’m ecstatic!” He planted a kiss on your lips, one that showed you just how elated he really was. “Now, let’s go have this celebration dinner, so I can take you home and truly make you my wife.”
