Naomi Klein: this disaster has no room for disaster capitalism (permalink)

In The Shock Doctrine, Naomi Klein coined "disaster capitalism" to describe how, during a crisis, "ideas lying around" about how to enrich the few and take away our rights come to the fore.

In this short doc, she applies the theory to coronavirus.

The shock doctrine is well underway: privatizing social security, closing borders, maybe canceling elections.

But as Klein points out, disasters don't always precipitate oligarchy. The Great Depression catalyzed the New Deal and transformative change.

This is moment to seize. We have "ideas lying around" that are better than exploitation and oligarchy: ideas like a $15 minimum wage, an inclusive government, evidence-based policy free from corporate influence, Medicare for All, and, most of all, the Green New Deal.

Scalzi's canceled bookstore (permalink)

John Scalzi has had to cancel his tour for for The Last Emperox, a book in The Collapsing Empire series. It was the right call for him (and Tor Books to make).

My Twitter account was suspended (permalink)

My Twitter account is back!

Here's what happened:

I woke up yesterday morning and discovered that my account was locked. There was no explanation, either in the app, the site or my email for this. I contacted everyone I knew at Twitter, and everyone who knew anyone at Twitter. At 830AM Pacific – about 5h after the suspension – I got an email from support – saying I'd been suspended for having a list to which I add trolls called "colossal assholes."

I'm not sure that this qualifies as a ToS violation (I gave up reporting trolls who called me much worse, because Twitter inevitably replied that these epithets were not prohibited), but it's super-weird that they suspended me without warning or explanation. Also weird: I could not rename the list while suspended, only delete it (I tried to rename it "thoroughly unpleasant individuals").

Weirder: "Colossal assholes" got me suspended, but not its companion list, "Toe-faced shitweasels"

Thanks to everyone who contacted Twitter on my behalf, and for the Twitter folks who lit a fire to get that suspension explanation email sent my way.

All of my followers were deleted. Twitter tells me they'll reappear over 24h or so, but more than 100k are still missing. If you're interested in seeing my future tweets, please double-check that you're subscribed.

Also, in response to Twitter's sensitivity about "colossal assholes" as a listname, I've renamed and expanded my lists.

Patent trolls try to shut down covid testing (permalink)

It's nearly impossible to sum up all the terrible in this story about a patent troll who is attacking America's ability to make and distribute coronovirus test-kits.

Labrador Diagnostics LLC is a patent troll (💩) that bought two of Theranos's patents (💩💩). They're a shell company spun up by Fortress Investment Group, Softbank's (💩💩💩) giant patent troll (💩💩💩💩). They're suing Biofire, a company that actually makes things (as opposed to Labrador, which only makes lawsuits). Which things are Biofire making? Covid-19 tests (💩💩💩💩💩).

They're represented by Irell & Manella, a lawfirm that previously claimed to represent a monkey. No, really. (💩💩💩💩💩💩)

It's inception-level terrible, a grifty shit burrito encased in a shit-flour tortilla, wrapped in a layer of shit-foil, and served in a go-bag of shitty, shitty, shit.

This is the kind of shit-matrioshke that could wipe out our species.

I'm really impressed with Erin Kissane's "Working and Learning from Home with Young Children" – an important sanity check for anyone ramping up a new way of relating to our kids.

"Don't be Captain Homeschool on day one" is definitely a lesson we've already learned the hard way, and I'm excited to try out its antidote, "Rhythms > schedules":

Brave files GDPR complaint against Google (permalink)

It's long been obvious that US Big Tech companies are unserious about their GDPR compliance, taking cosmetic, pro-forma measures that don't really engage with the substance of the rules (those rules demand nothing less than a top-to-bottom industry restructure).

EU regulators have been slow to punish them for this, but the GDRP affords standing to many private actors to demand action for noncompliance, which is how it is that Brave has filed GDPR action against Google.

The complaint's substance is that Google is collecting data through its many products, divisions and services and merging that data on the back-end, which the GDPR expressly prohibits without meaningful, opt-in consent (and you can't deny service those who don't consent).

Brave published a study that analyzed Google's communications with users, partners, regulators and customers and showed that these are effectively an admission of the kind of "data-tying" that the GDPR bans.

A day without tumblr

Bored so I actually documented what I did with the day.

* Woke up and realized i’d stained my face by leaving anti burn cream on overnight which left a dark tannin burn (scabbed and peeled off over 24h later). Sis thought this was hilarious and documented it. I’ll spare you the photos.

* Continued to experience the deee-light-ful side effects/withdrawal from changing meds as midodrine is back in stock (for now at least). Agitation, gastrointestinal disturbance and 24/7 goosebumps/shivers. Goosebumps are like tinnitus, ok for 30 seconds max, *very* annoying after 12 hours straight.

* Tested the needle punch pen as a reroot tool (bought for a grand total of 48 cents woop woop ebay search for “tool” under a dollar with free shipping ending soonest is a goldmine): my review: nope and NOPE. Once i’d kludged up the pen tool to actually work; it slices the yarn, doesn’t stick in the head and leaves mega holes.

* I downloaded my original posts via tumblthree after three attempts til I remembered that you need to authenticate using your email not username. Then it was lightening fast and i’ll have a copy of some of the tutorials i havn’t copied to wordpress yet. a job for another day.

*Watched two episodes of ‘Consumed’ with my sister. Half way through the second one, I paused it as her and mum hashed out a decades old issue.

In one of our moves - when my sister was about 9- mum warned her that she wasn’t going to be packing all my sister’s ‘treasures’ which ranged from pieces of paper, cut out catalogues to found objects to large pieces of scrap metal. Asking permission for each object would have been near impossible given how fast the move was going and how attached she was to items. So, Mum threw away her most prized possession ever, the tiny handgun she was gifted by a little boy who dug it up out back of our tower block. It was a secret that only I knew about [ I refused to let her clean the inside of the dirt packed thing as I’d heard about guns going off when being cleaned (I was 12 and I knew jack about guns OK)]. We lived in a dodgy neighbourhood so the kids downstairs also had a large collection of various knives and switchblades because they’d be dropped in the bushes whenever the police did a check of the local gang (being caught with a weapon on you is illegal here). Mum throwing away the gun and other items left sis with issues re: stuff and trust and mum felt she couldn’t speak to her about items so they’d just avoided the issue for years.

So yeah, there was a small moment of catharthis via mildly exploitative tv. =)

* Went off to check ebay as I was bored and found that my most recent custom is up for sale starting at 1€ - I don’t know how I feel about that, guess the client didn’t bond with her but still... I felt too embarrassed to bid on her myself so i got sis to bid for me LMAO. I’ll be bidding what i’d be willing to pay for the MTM body so it won’t feel like a loss if I win then i’ll make her some custom clothes put her on her original body and sell worldwide to someone who’ll appreciate an anthro monster with gradient blue hair =p

* I went though the open storage boxes and pen holders on my desk and found dust bunnies and a years worth of small post (not much just misc nail art supplies - some in duplicate! a few cabochons, some ribbons etc) and decided I really need a different storage system. I can’t see my stuff and out of sight = out of mind (might not as well exist) for this neurodivergent brain. I’m going to try and find some A4 or A5 transparent drawers. The current system just isn’t working. Might not sound like much but it’s a small breakthrough.

*Had to take a scalding bath to try and ease the pain of leg cramps due to aforementioned digestive issues causing intestinal spasms and so much trapped wind I looked 8 months preggers. I like to listen to Punch up the jam for my weekly soak but I also sometimes listen to DJ Phil, he’s this corny ol dj who does a podcast of 70s 80s 90s artists which allows you to have a quick overview of famous bands you havn’t really heard of or really listened to outside of their one major hit. Sometimes it just leaves me pondering why X artist got so famous, others have the opposite effect.

* I then binge watched Tidelands which was basically a humourless True Blood but with mermaids. I was just watching to see how it ended really and ugh, not worth the effort. Large body count, no emotional follow through, random sex for no reason and unnecessary cruelty. 1/5 stars.

*Oh, The other day I watched Dumplin’ which was very cute and feel good though I was a little concerned about drag queens getting roped into being free fairy godmothers for all those teens. The new song Dolly Parton wrote for it ‘Girl in the movies’ is very pretty.

So all in all quite a few things happened these past few days there’s so much I don’t document and probably should but it’s still hard to put myself out there on display. I think i’d feel a little less frightened if there was a viewable to friends post option of if this was a closed forum. the internet can choose to highlight and boost the randomest stuff and that makes me very uneasy.

What Linz read:

The Wife by Meg Wolitzer: Contemporary novel about a woman’s life as a a famous author’s wife. It’s not breaking any ground and the “twist” is telegraphed pretty hard early on, but it’s well-written and I enjoyed it

Sisters of Shadow and Light by Sara B. Larson: The publisher has kindly asked us to not post reviews until 2 weeks before sale date, so I don’t want to say anything just yet about this fantasy story involving 2 sisters who are stuck in a Paladin citadel, but I’ll post my review on Goodreads Oct. 22.

What Linz is currently reading:

The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis: OK so I’m an idiot and thought this book was about girls who were forced into magical servitude via cursed tattoos, but, like, as child soldiers, not prostitutes-in-training. Whoops. So given that I thought this was a very different book, I’m not into it yet, but I’m gonna try to hit 20% and re-evaluate if I finish it.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing: JUST got this from the library and I’m a little excited to start reading it today. From Goodreads: “We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive. Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.”

It’s starting to get cold, so, like Linz, my chronic pain is flaring up. But who can think about that when thE NATS ARE IN THE WORLD SERIES?! We also have Dewey’s 24h Readathon this Saturday so my TBR is here too.

What I read this week:

Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern: So this is where I would normally tell you what this book is about, but IM NOT GONNA. It’s so much better to go into Erin’s books blind and I’m not going to ruin that. What I WILL say is it’s got a giant (as in world size) library. I have no words. This book was perfect and I already want to reread it. Drunk review comin sooon.

The Broken Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin: This is the second book in the Inheritance series. Parker wrote a hilarious review. Listening on audio. I enjoyed this a lot more than the first one. Maybe it’s because I understand it more? Idk. I already downloaded book 3 from the library so that’s good news.

What I’m currently reading:

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore: So this is a story of a family that always has 5 girls, 5 cousins. The men that spawn these women disappear, so it’s always the women. 5 ladies, 5 mothers, 5 Grandmas (abuelas), when suddenly a boy appears. He has no memories. Guys I know I’m slow going at this but some stuff happened in the book and now I’m v v sad.

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: This is our book club book for the month. Basically it’s the 1920s-ish in Mexico, and our main character Casiopea accidentally lets the god of death out of prison and he gotta put himself back together before he turns mortal and for a variety of reasons (including potential death herself) Casiopea goes with him. I am getting some SERIOUS Hades and Persephone vibes from this and I love it.

Aurora Rising by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman: This is the first in a new sci-fi series by our fave Illuminae duo. Tyler has it made, he’s gonna get the #bestsquadever. But then when he’s out practicing space stuff, he finds a ship that has a buncha dead people in cryopods, except one isn’t dead, she’s Aurora. Anyway he ends up with the last of the last crews and may have accidentally witnessed the start of an intergalactic war. So.. that. I’m really really liking the dynamic of the squad, everyone is a little odd and a little broken but they’re starting to get to know each other. Queen of the Unwanted by Jenna Glass: This is the sequel to Women’s War which came out last year. Because I got the arc of that, Netgalley asked if I was interested in reading this and the answer was YES. I’m not super far in but I’m excited!

Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi: I read a book by John Scalzi a while back called Fuzzy, where the main character discovers the cutest animal ever and it turns out to be sentient and he has to prove it. This is the kind of the opposite, aliens exist but they look like the thing of nightmares but are actually super cool. Tom, the main characters, is a Hollywood agent who has been tasked with figuring out how to introduce the aliens to the public. It’s pretty delightful, the idea and the characters are fun. You can tell it’s one of Scalzi’s earlier novels as there’s some undertones of (as the news has told us) industry-standard misogyny. The main character, luckily isn’t a dick, but there’s still some statements that were a little bit cringey. Doesn’t change the fact that I trust Scalzi and I’m enjoying this book.

Laughter at the Academy by Seanan McGuire: I’m lucky enough to have gotten this as an ARC from Netgalley. This is a collection of short stories from throughout McGuire’s career. It’s delightful to see some of the earlier stories next to things that have a more modern feel. I’m planning on writing a review for this one!

Pocket Apocalypse by Seanan McGuire: Yes, okay, I read two of these books in the same week. This is the 4th book in the InCryptid series and continues to delight. Alex has to go to Australia to try to help end a werewolf infestation. Yet again, planning on writing a review of this so I’m not going to say too much.

How Long ’til Black Future Month by N.K. Jemisin: This is another book of short stories and like all collections, some are stronger than others. That doesn’t change the fact that there’s some absolutely amazing pieces among this collection, the kind of pieces that make you never want to write a single word ever again because you aren’t going to be able to write something so good. My particular favorites ended up being a story set in a reality bubble where people are only connected via blogs and one set during Hurricane Katrina that included a set of lizards that could talk. Both of those stories (and many of the ones I didn’t mention) had this beautiful flow to it, and had these really subtle feelings of hope or dread. 5/5
