George R R Martin and Terry Pratchett both reframed fantasy/fiction tropes to be more realistic but by god they did it very differently.
#mine#so grrm was going for writing a history textbook basically and terry pratchett was going for writing stories#but i really prefer terry pratchett's method of realism#it's funny and subversive and meta and done with love to the trope it's nice#i know it's not what grrm goes for but that quote from hogfather about lies like mercy#grrm just doesn't go for that and it makes his stories worse as stories#they still work as historical accounts but not as well as stories#because grrm will let someone suffer or something bad happen more than he will let someone have mercy or justice or anything like that#most of the time at least#which is hard#discworld
