It's the day after the same old dream that Morgan has had for years. It doesn't come every night or even that often. It comes every time he flashes his pretty boy that particular smile and says he loves him, confesses for all the world to see, and the smartest person he has ever met stupidly sees none of it.
Morgan has his cup of coffee and a stack of folders on his desk far more pressing than his dream, but as he looks up and sees Reid, he can't help thinking back to it. The brunette is fiddling with a piece of candy, unwrapping it with clumsy fingers as his eyes scanned over page after page, his other hand flipping them to keep up. Once the sweet was free from the foil, he popped it into his mouth, only to pause, head slowly lifting and gaze meeting Morgan's, who hadn't even realized he was staring.
Rather than be embarrassed by it, he flashed his genius a smile and waved. Mentally, he was too busy correcting himself that Reid wasn't his genius to notice the other's hesitation and blush. At least at first, but when Reid's chocolate gaze dropped his without much of a response, Morgan's curiosity was piqued.
Glancing around the office to make certain no one was too keenly aware of the exchange, he stood up and walked over. Propping one hip onto the desk, he greeted Reid, "My man. How are you this morning?"
Causal, friendly, Morgan had mastered the art of acting like they were just friends. A few moments, he slipped, but for the most part, his acting was flawless.
"Good. I have only about an hour of reports to finish from last week's case and then I'll be able to work on the one we tackled over the weekend," Reid answered quickly, his gaze focused on the files rather than on Derek. He flipped through a few more pages before reaching for his coffee mug. Almost as an afterthought, he added, "How are you?"
Derek couldn't help chuckling. He was still weeks behind, and Reid was worrying about catching up with their most recent case. It felt rather typical. Everyone except JJ and Hotch had week hold reports due, but the two with the most pressure on them had to get them done fast. Reid pounded his out because...well, Derek supposed he did it just because he could.
"I'm good. I'm good. I'm thinking about heading out to my new house to work on it if we have this weekend free," Derek replied with a leisurely smile and a slight nod.
"I wouldn't count on that," JJ informed him as she walked past them, a stack of files under her arm. "We need you guys in the conference room."
Just like that, Reid's files were closed, and the two men were walking towards another case.
Reid couldn't help feeling grateful for that. Any other day, Morgan's attention was welcome, wanted really, but today, he felt on edge. Even walking behind the older agent, there was a red stain to his cheeks, and his eyes remained fixed on his shoulders.
