Viktor knew Jayce had more he wanted to say to him/there was more than just wanting to stop Viktor for the sake of the world, and that it likely wasn't the main reason Jayce even wanted to stop Viktor in the first place as SOON as they made eye-contact. Viktor KNEW Jayce had other motives but Viktor was so blinded by how flawed he saw himself that he could not even fathom that Jayce might have been trying to stop him for the sake of saving him.

But - once Viktor literally opened jayce's mind - he realized what the truth was: that Jayce had made a promise, that Jayce found beauty in his imperfections, and that all he wanted was his partner back.
