Kaicon Melbourne 2024 part 2: electric boogaloo is a wrap!
And Holy Shit. What a good event. I was randomly paired with the absolutely lovely liannnarts_jg and it was a real contrast having my menagerie of horror, and her lovely vtuber idol prints next to each other but it was a really fun weekend and we had a bit of a laugh switching our table mascots on day 2!
The SCP fandom absolutely carried me and for that I am forever thankful. I met so many lovely people, got to chat with some incredible artists and overall I'm so tired but my heart is so full.
Had a customer tell me they'd seen people walking around the con wearing my lanyards and keycards and I got really emotional.
I have so many cool ideas for new merch based on live feedback from people and I am so fucking pumped to produce more stuff for February next year! Kaicon Melb 2025 here we fucking go!!!!

Something that pops up in my notes from time to time is folks thinking I'm being excessively kind in my criticisms of Dungeons & Dragons, and I'm going to spin this off into a separate thread to address that without putting anyone on the spot.
First, if your own critique of Dungeons & Dragons is rooted in the idea that it's the Worst Game Ever, that speaks more to the limits of your experience than it does to anything else. Dungeons & Dragons in any of its iterations is far from the worst the tabletop roleplaying hobby has to offer – like, you have no fucking idea!
Second, I tend to be even-handed in my discussion of D&D's rules because, fundamentally, the rules are not the problem – or, at least, not the principal cause of the problem.
In many ways, the indie RPG sphere has never escaped the spectre of Ron Edwards, sternly pronouncing that the mechanical process of playing traditional RPGs causes actual, physical brain damage, and that this brain damage is responsible for the bad behaviour we often observe at the table. We don't say it that way anymore, but on some level a lot of us indie RPG designers still kind of believe it.
This is understandable. As game designers, we're naturally inclined to think of problems at the table as game design problems. When we see a problematic culture of play, our impulse is to frame it as something which emerges from the text of the game, and which can therefore be mitigated by repairing the text of the game.
Confronted with the obvious toxicity of certain facets of D&D's culture of play, we go combing through its text, looking for something – some formalism, some structure, some piece of rules technology – which we can point to and say: "this is it; this is where the brain-worms live."
The trouble is, this is not in fact where the brain-worms live. Certainly, the text of a game, particularly a very popular one, can have some influence on the game's surrounding culture of play, but that text is in turn a reflection of the culture of play in which it was written. The Player's Handbook isn't an SCP object, spewing infectious infohazards everywhere when you crack open the cover – hell, I'd go so far as to say that many of the problems of D&D's culture of play operate in spite of the game's text, not because of it!
Basically, what I'm saying is that I don't see any contradiction between being the sort of pretentious knob who writes one-page indie RPGs about gay catgirls talking about their feelings (which I am), and speaking favourably about this or that piece of rules tech from whatever flavour of Dungeons & Dragons is in favour this week (which I do), because I recognise that you can't game-design your way out of a problem you didn't game-design your way into.
The fact that one of the biggest problems facing the tabletop roleplaying hobby is something that can't be repaired by fucking around with dice-rolling procedures is a bitter pill to swallow for a lot of indie game designers, and I won't say I wasn't resistant to it myself, but it's something that's both useful and necessary to accept.
(None of this means that the text of Dungeons & Dragons in any of its incarnations is beyond criticism on other grounds, of course, and I've never been shy about highlighting those criticisms where they're warranted. The only way you're gonna arrive at the conclusion that I'm some sort of D&D apologist is if you're starting from the presumption that The Real Problem Is The Rules.)

Last week on my character a day thread was more "Magical Girl SCP" characters and I'm realizing I didn't share the pictures from the last time I brought out the psudo scp universe characters so here they are. I'll make the whole story someday. Lore/flavor text is as follows: 1: Fairbanks would often have to insist Isabelle stop skipping her small arms training. She rarely said it, but she was very fond of the junior researcher. And she knew just how unsafe the SAFE Research Department could be.
2: Fairbanks' Notes on the Vampire, "Drymouth."
After 21 days without feeding, she will enter a state of altered consciousness and will speak true prophecies. The Board believes it is worth the ethical costs of starving her. I believe she uses her prophecies to guide us to our destruction.
3: Partial Transcript: Tattoo Parlor, 3:25 PM
Subject X66: "I'm still kinda nervous about the pain, ya know. I'm sure you get that a lot."
Witness: "I... what is... Is that a body mod?"
Subject X66: "What are you talking about?"
Witness: "Holy fuck it moved!"
4: Codename Sunshine is the first entity to take a role in DIR Fairbank's "Special Taskforce." Though the Director believes she is wholly reliable and a potential asset for our field agents, many are skeptical. Her ability to "transmute light into burning liquid" is quote: "Scary AF."
5: Agent Nathan Collier returned to work with REDACTED three months after the incident with Valeria's escape. His personal heroism in subduing the entity aside, it was decided he was unfit for field work. Instead he was reassigned to the SAFE Department on so called "babysitting duty."
6: Ben died a few years ago in an unrelated accident, but ever since then what appears to be his "ghost" continues to check the halls for anomalous readings. Once we calibrated his scanner to account for his own emanations, he returned to being a valued member of *redacted*
7: What limited things we do know is REDACTED's body is made of particles which "absorb" em waves of all kinds, from light to radio. Though REDACTED manages to bypass nearly every security measure we have, they have no connections or intentions that qualify as a threat.
8: Contrary to popular belief, Franklin is NOT an anomalous entity. He is merely a holdover from REDACTED before it became REDACTED. His "good humor and fatherly advice" has often made agents question his true nature. And security monitors him as agents often confide secrets with him.
(ooc note, it was about an hour after drawing this that I realized I basically just drew Clint McElroy)
9: Frm: Dir Fairbanks The girl in our care is not to be referred to as "anomaly" or "spider thing" or by her case number. She has come to us willingly. Her name is Penelope, and but for her anomalous mutations is a normal child. We will provide her normalcy. That is an order.

Odds lifetime speedrun + some facts
Tumblr media
5 years old: Lives in a cult until most of her relatives were killed by GOC (we don't miss them) and until she was taken to the Foundation. Listed as SCP-2408-1-B until adulthood.
14-17 years old: "nobody likes me" edgy emo teenage era. And "nobody likes me" part is actually a bit true... Besides Odds, they had other teenage humanoid anomalies that were far more interesting due to their abilities (remind you Odds has none but it was assumed that she would have in the future). SCP-105, for example, who was given more attention. Since then, Odds dislikes Iris and even envies her, not realizing that Iris herself doesn't like her situation very much. She sees Iris as a stereotypical "popular girl". By the way, as you may have guessed, "Odds" is not her real name, but a nickname. Her real name is Elizabeth, or Beth.
22 years old: No longer listed as SCP. Since no one knew what to do with her, Odds is sent to do simple paperwork. Something similar to the job Iceberg does, but even simpler, so her salary is not very high. Actually the situation is so bad that she now lives in Site-17's store room. Unfriendly, unsociable, grumpy (you probably see where it's going........), somehow she does have one friend — dr. Lainystarsky, I will tell you about them later.
26 years old: Literally the same thing but now she's dr. Kondraki's assistant. They assigned her to be his assistant because they noticed that she was starting to get lazy over time so they thought that working with the "big scary Doc Kondraki" would motivate her to work better. And they were right. But she wasn't scared of him. Instead Odds went "omg he's like me but way cooler stronger and more talented omg he's so awesome literally the best person I've ever met." Yep, she idealized him too much. Literally not noticing his flaws. If you are familiar with BPD, you probably know what "favorite person" means. So yeah, Ben literally became her fp.....
Also before anyone accuses me of romanticizing the BPD, just letting you know - I have BPD, so I know what I'm talking about. ^_^ ALSO I don't want people to see oddsdraki as a hot daddy and his cute little puppygirl. I may joke about it, but these are just jokes so please don't see oddsdraki that way, that's disgusting 🙏 They're both terribly mentally ill stinky nerds 🙏🙏🙏
30 years old: ???
38-40 years old: milf era I guess

I discovered TSAMS after they posted their first 5 videos, and subscribed after I recognized Davis's voice acting since I was already subscribed to his separate Minecraft roleplay channel.
I've been here since the very beginning. I have screenshots of their very first videos and the dates, and even before then with Davis's old Minecraft videos with TheFamousFilms where I watched TheFamousFilms post/premiere the very first video with InvisibleDavis voice acting as Molten.
I remember Brian's original pokemon hat. A lot of things have happened and I'm very happy that the fandom has blown up as it has and become this popular. I remember being so sad that there weren't many people watching the early Minecraft videos because the actors were very good and even with the pixelized Minecraft skins they had, they could convey so much emotion and get me invested.
I remember the start of the following Minecraft roleplays: TFF, Dimensions, FTO, SCP, MHO, TFF FNAF Security Breach, Ooo, Bonnie's Adventures, Fairy Tail, TTF MINECRAFT FNAF (Davis pov), The creation and deletion of the other Minecraft channel between JonJon/Davis/Kat with Spring bonnie and Fred bear, Brian's decision between Reddy and Lefty, Molten getting almost destroyed in lava and getting rebuilt; with him having a redemption arc, SAO, The Minecraft livestreams that they did, The Backrooms, MHO season 2, Bonnie's adventures Season 2, the creation of Nobe with the portal in Freddy Land, Undertale, SCP Season 2, Fnaf Chronicle, and many other roleplays that I just don't remember the name of. I can't even summarize all of these because of all the detail and lore they've put into all of these things.
I've been here through it all. I just made this post to say that I am very happy that I have stuck with them throughout all these years and have continued to watch the things Davis and the others have made. I will continue to watch until the day all of them stop posting, since I have been here from the day that the very first Minecraft fnaf roleplay of TheFamousFilms only had 5 - 15 comments. There are still fans from long ago in the beginning that were there when Brian first uploaded the video with him meeting Helpy 6 years ago.
I am listing all of these so that the new members that only joined at the time of TSAMS can find and be aware of all of the amazing content the voice actors have made throughout the years. I may not be remembering all the roleplays they have done though, so if they want to, the fandom veterans can tag different things that that the VAs have participated in.
I think i'll forever be a fan :]

Hello to the desk. I write in all good things I promise I'm just nervous. But you make me smile every time you come up on any of my timelines. And me and my sibling share your posts with each other when we find something silly. But all that is to say...
I think you're pretty neat, and lots of other people do too. And if they decide to be mean... I say we make them go kaboomies. (Not actually, this is a joke). Anyways have a good day/night/whatever time it is- you do great things and keep making people smile. :]
I am very glad to hear you say that. Warms the old thumping meat sack in my chest. I think you humans call it a he-art or something lol.
You never, ever have to be nervous with me. Ever. I am just a dude who likes to act a fool. Nothing more and nothing less. If it makes you feel better I promise that I've made much a bigger ass of myself when I first met Author so I promise NOTHING you all can do would pale in comparison to that. But yeah, I'm just a old, fuzzy guy who likes to hang. Never be afraid to speak to me. I am always around and willing to listen if need be.
And we do not need to make those people go kaboomies. That is not what they need. If it were to get out who they are I would personally go after anyone who went to them because I left their names out for a reason. Our job in this community is not to damn others but to uplift others. If these people want redemption they deserve a second chance.
I'll use Clef as an example. Most people follow the 4231 line. Francis/Clef was given a second chance at life. In that story he was a part of one of the worst things imaginable and now is reveared as one of, if not the most popular SCP doctor. (We don't talk about the bad one on the Desk's blog)
If we can look at this character and watch him grow through his tales then we can learn from that and go "You know what, yeah, these people may suck. These people may have done terrible, terrible things... but I do not want to be like them."
I would rather people continue to trash my name than have any of you lower yourselves.
I'll bare the bullets, you all live and be good for me :-D

Gotten a few asks about this so let me clarify:
Atlantis the Lost Empire is NOT Nazi propaganda nor is it an endorsement of Nazi beliefs.
It's another example of a piece of media that has taken inspiration from a conspiracy theory which unfortunately has ties to the Nazis' obsession with proving their bonkers Aryan race theory.
The Nazis were obsessed with finding and creating ANY sort of historical/traditional link to validate their agenda, no matter how utterly ridiculous or entirely separate from reality that link was. They were obsessed with the mystical and the occult. Pseudo-science and pseudo-archaeology were their literal bread and butter.
In this instance, Plato's story of a sunken ancient city is not special for being co-opted for the Nazi's purposes. What has lead Atlantis to becoming a popular conspiracy theory in modern times is due in part to the steady popularization of pseudo-science as well as bad faith actors promoting a racist conspiracy theory as genuine fact.
The majority of conspiracy theories you hear about today actually have roots in fiction. For example, the Hollow Earth conspiracy theory finds it's origins from science fiction novels dating back to the 1800s. The Philadelphia Project can also trace its origins to a UFO writer who claims he was receiving secret confidential intel from a former US mariner. And yet there are are people who genuinely believe there is a secret world hidden in the center of the earth and that the US government was experimenting with and succeeded in creating a portal to another dimension.
So is the case with Atlantis. Atlantis: The Antediluvian World was written by Ignatius Donnelly in 1882 as a means to express his desires for a populist government and world. He was extremely misguided in his belief that Plato's story was factual and he employed the use of hyperdiffusion-a popular method used in countless conspiracy theories-to argue that all ancient societies were basically all descended from one even more ancient people.
Or in the Nazi's own terms: "An ancient master race."
Bad actors like Graham Hancock and Ancient Aliens further popularized the Nazi's conspiracy theory (as well as many others) and Donnelly's books by spreading mass disinformation across a global scale and we are all suffering for it.
As I've already stated before, Atlantis the Lost Empire takes superficial inspiration from the conspiracy theory in the same way that Stranger Things takes inspiration from the Montauk Project. Many popular sci-fi films, tv shows, books, and video games are littered with references and nods to conspiracy theories. Everything from Men in Black to The X Files to the SCP Foundation.
If you are interested in seeing how convincing conspiracy theories can get and their very real ability to destroy actual lives, I recommend watching American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders. It perfectly showcases how conspiracy theories can suck you in and how people can easily take advantage of you once they break down your ability to distinguish fiction from reality.
My only caveat with the documentary is that I really wish the creators had emphasized even more plainly to the audience that the Octopus Murders is an actual conspiracy theory instead of leaving the question somewhat open ended. Especially in regards to Danny Casolaro's death.
I would also highly recommend watching Milo Rossi aka miniminuteman's videos as his channel is dedicated solely to debunking various archaeological conspiracy theories as well as providing fascinating education on a variety of historical topics. I really cannot overstate how wonderful his Awful Archaeology series is.
I'm going to link a few of my favorites here:
youtube
This is the first of a multiseries debunking Graham Hancock's Ancient Apocalypse series.
youtube
This is Part 1 of 2 of him debunking one of the most notorious TikTokers who makes a living off of spreading mass disinformation.
I would be remiss not to mention Atun-Shei Film's amazing channel as well as Lady of the Library.
youtube
youtube
youtube
I would also recommend Kaz Rowe's channel as they provide stellar information on a wide variery of historical topics.
youtube
youtube
Tldr; Atlantis the Lost Empire and the films creators' did not set out to promote Nazi beliefs. They simply took inspiration from a popular conspiracy theory and made it something entirely unique and separate from the Aryan race agenda.

Blackbox Warrior, Hand Me My Shovel, and Parties are For Losers (the series, not that one particularly) are all better SCP songs than anything CG5 or the like have made. Keter Qualities & Superstitious Foundation may have millions of views but that's because the lowest common denominator has shit taste
Stuff from/for the wiki like the Find Us Alive Soundtrack and Niram's Nalka Chants are STRONG contenders though - if people haven't listened to them.
Continues my agenda there's very little worth in anything popular without connection to the wiki, unless it's inspired

Is anyone interested in sharing some theories about SCP-049 or the Pestilence? I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts. I know SCP is probably such an outdated Fandom, but I absolutely love it. Also if I get enough of a response to this, I might make a long post trying to debunk popular theories and even explaining my own.
Not sure if anyone is really interested, but I don't think the Pestilence even exists and I'm sure SCP-049 is very much aware of this fact. Again if enough people respond I can elaborate more in a longer post.

Creepypasta BrainRot Lore Dump
Disclaimer: this is SOLELY for my project and not to be taken literally.
.
.
.
.
(It’s 1am but I need to spill. I will edit this going forward but here’s the gist of the premise)
The story takes place in a fictional state in America literally called “MidWest”. It’s your typical emo Midwest landscape and atmosphere.
MidWest is a popular filming location for horror movies
VOIDANT CORPS[E] is an independent facility, running off the thrill of conspiracy theories and urban legends alike. SCP Foundation or the facility in “cabin in the woods” comes to mind.
They are responsible for many controversial experiments, one of them being the production of Liquid Death for Jane Richardson. Jane had been the last and single successful patient to recover from the injection while showing remarkable strength and endurance.
There have been two clones of Jane made with the adjusted serum and have been titled Jane E. And Jane A (everlasting, Arkensaw). They are very mechanic and serve purpose to redirect Jeff and trigger his past.
Jeff is the core link between every online urban legend. Nailing him down makes everyone else go down with him.
By no means was Jeff ever considered a proxy; the Slenderman was already frustrated with his disobedience to his static frequencies.
Jeff had split from Slenderman and his puppets as Jeff began to grow sloppy and restless with his kills, bringing more exposure to the woods.
VOID goes to extreme measures in provoking a zombie apocalypse just to narrow down to Jeff and co being the last ones standing.
However, past patients of liquid death have been resurrected, and their presence and willingness to speak up threatens the reputation of the VOID.
TLDR:
A conspiracy organization summons a zombie apocalypse as a distraction to the world so they can pin down Jeff the Killer and prove his existence and connections to other monsters, entities and slashers. Oddly enough, is said organization being relied on to STOP said apocalypse from happening.
You have that going on while a zombie DJ’s cyber parasitic ghost is in a rush to unzip and decode every document and secret behind the internet.
YUP. Girl I’ve been writing this shit since September, could you believe it?

HIII!! first of all i want to say that your clef is amazing and i just want to squish him. second of all -...i am VERY new to scp, like only two days or something, and uh.. i have some lore questions. like.. is there any particular reasons to clef ukulele and francis being a system? i still think that idea is cool but i'm curious if there's reasons for it please don't think that i'm trying to juddge i just want to understand- and.. who is dr myriad?
Thanks and welcome to SCP! Best thing to remember here is that everything, ever, including "fan content", is canon. It's a multitude of universes in there with infinite possibilities, after all.
The A Major Chord system is a popular headcanon in the fandom due to the similarities of their storyline to DID - due to extreme stress, the mind fractures in order to handle the current situation, connections shown with the little diagram here. (Another reason why we depict them as a system is because we also have the Chord.)
Tumblr media
Dr. Myriad is a rewrite of Dr. Bright due to their author directly using them and their popularity to abuse others. Bits of Dr. Myriad's storyline and references can be found here (refs tag) and here (necessary documentation). Note: Necessary Documentation temporarily held here for sharing purposes.

Out of universe:
I just discovered this blog, and I had a question I couldn't find an answer to on the FAQ page. How does this concept compare/differ/relate to SCP?
OOC: Well, I’m definitely inspired by SCP (among other things people have pointed out in the almost 70k notes on the posters post, like Control, Portal, Omega Mart, tumblr user melinoelabs, some others I’m sure I’m not remembering). I’m a fan of SCP, I think a lot of people following me are.
As far as comparisons, there’s definitely a lot of thematic overlap between SCP and OPN, enough that fans of the SCP will probably be fans of this.
That being said, there is no intentional lore/story similarity between SCP and OPN. They are not meant to be in the same universe, and no actual lore characters/features/etc are meant to be in both unless they came from somewhere else first. Aside from very general and basic concepts like “cognitohazards” or “memetics” of course, but I’m sure SCP didn’t really come up with those, just popularized them.
As to how it differs, I can point a few things out from an author’s point of view, so take the following with whatever grains of salt you’re comfortable with.
1) I am, intentionally, building a world that is a little brighter than many settings of the same type. There’s horror and intrigue, absolutely, but there’s fun, and silliness. When brainstorming or sounding-board with my friends and co-writer, I often use the phrase “that’s goofy, but the goofiness is not disqualifying”. I mean, two months ago, an LSD-powered Alice in Wonderland themed AI saved Halloween. There’s a little bit of ambiguity, of course - the intentional clash between the “voice” of Norm who is a fundamentally optimistic person with a bias vs the darker tone of Meghan’s interviews (found in the #interview tag) is something I’m cultivating, but I hope overall it’s clear I’m intending a brighter, less grim dark tone.
2) SCP relies on a lot of wholly original content - SCP-173 did not exist as a concept before it was written, whereas much of my work leans on a basic assumption that every existing myth, legend, or folktale is at least a little bit true. The “kitchen sink” approach. SCP of course does deal with Bigfoot, or fae, or what-have-you, and I have a good chunk of concepts that are wholly original as well. It’s a mostly-true generalization that I do keep to as a design tool. Most of the posters rely on well-known concepts and the ones that don’t can be ascertained from context clues like the etymology of “Ontophage”. This is also a factor in my appreciation of real-world concepts like bureaucracy humor.
Hopefully that answers some questions! Feel free to ask more. I’ll be traveling the next few days so I might be a little quiet, but ooc stuff is a nice change of pace.
