i know the tags are hateful and I would never have fit this next bit in them so:

the painful Wade-Giles translation (pinyin gang sends its regards) aside, the “měi” (with a caron) character was written with the hanzi for beautiful but (despite the different tones and most regular people don’t include accent marks when transcribing) “mei” could also be with an acute,”méi” 梅 plum.

Plum as in part of the 3 Friends of Winter (plum, pine, bamboo); plum as in a symbol of perseverance in the face of adversity, a common lunar new year motif also.

Jiaoqiu had been sitting up in his bed when he heard two quick knocks on the door to his room at the Alchemy Commission, followed by the turn of the door handle and the unmistakable patter of little feet stepping towards him. There couldn’t be more excellent timing.

"Ah, Dragon Lady. I assume you're here to administer the Draconic Ichor dewdrops again?" He smiled softly in the direction of Bailu's footsteps, holding up a hand when the little vidyadhara halted near his bedside. "However, before you start, I have something I wish to give you." Reaching his hand underneath his pillow, Jiaoqiu felt around for a moment before pulling out a mooncake wrapped inside clear packaging, its crust a delicious golden color.

"As I wasn't able to go out and buy this myself, I asked General Feixiao to get it for me. This is both a gift to you for the festival and my token of thanks for all your hard work." Despite his severely impaired gaze, the foxian nontheless winked. "Make sure you enjoy it, ok?"

"This is for me?" Bailu's tail started to wag.

"Thank you!" Instantly, she set aside the tray she was holding and happily took the offered moon cake. The gave the cake a few cursory sniffs, trying to sus out what flavor it was, before putting it away in her medicine pouch. She'll figure it out later when she's not on the clock.

"And thank you for your hard work too," said Bailu. "Stelle and Moze told me that it's thanks to you we're even able to hold the War Dance and celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival. So thank you." Bailu then turned her attention to the tray where a pair of plastic gloves, a syringe, a vile of her tears, disinfectant wipes, a few cotton balls, and a band-aid were neatly arranged.

"Don't worry, my tears will help you feel better in no time." Though she wasn't sure they would work on his eyes. However, Moze did say that General Feixiao was working on that, so perhaps there was a chance to restore his sight.

Bailu had already put on the gloves and was in the middle of filling the syringe when she suddenly remembered something. "Oh, before I forget, Stelle and Moze said that they're going to stop by later. They're baking you moon cakes or something, along with strawberry mochi too."
