This is barely 10 minutes into the movie. Lars was scared because he thought something dangerous was happening with Karin's pregnancy. We don't find out until a few minutes later that Lars' mother died while giving birth to him. Going back and rewatching this scene really adds to just how devastated Lars was when he thought Karin was in danger
