One last visualization:
Tumblr media
None of this is tumblr algorithm, all of this is user interaction!
Your reblogs have an astonishing power! This shows it better than any fandom curated post could have. Almost all of the reblogs come from my own reblog to my post. What it means, is that there's no tags, no algorithm, no search engine—only the people who reblogged from me, and the people who reblogged from them, and so forth!
I found reblog chains as deep as 40 reblogs deep! The amount of reblogs coming from OP is barely 1% of all the reblogs. (0.8997660608% to be precise, as I am precise). The majority of those reblog chains are 1-2 reblogs from a blog, that lead down the line to really big blogs, also.
P.S. I appreciate the thoughts and input so many of you added and I'm incredibly happy that you guys saw this post as positive and welcoming, as I too absolutely hate guilt trips!
To illustrate this post by @mayahawkse I would like to visualize to you the difference:
A post in 2023:
Tumblr media
A post in 2014:
Tumblr media
A zoom out of the same post:
Tumblr media
This is what a community looks like.
See how in 2023 almost all of the reblogs come from the OP, from their few hours/days in the tag search. Meanwhile in 2014 the % of reblogs from OP is insignificant, because most of the reblogs come from the reblogs within the fandom, within the micro-communities formed there. You didn't need to rely on tags, or search, or being featured. Because the community took care of you, made sure to pass the work between themselves and onto their blog and exposed their followers to it. It kept works alive for years.
It's not JUST the reblog/like ratio that causing this issue, it's the type of interaction people have. They're content with scrolling and liking the search engine, instead of actually having a reblogging relationship with other blogs in their community.
Anyways, if you want to see more content you like, the only true way to make it happen is to reblog it. Likes do not forward content in no way but making OP feel nice. Reblogs on the other hand make content eternal. They make it relevant, they make it exist outside of a fickle tumblr search that hardly works on the best of days.
If you want more of something, reblog it.
#Yet again I wish to add and say‚ you are not expected to reblog things you don't like! This is NOT about making you reblog EVERYTHING.#it's about encouraging you to consider rebloging the things you actually love and wish to see more of!!#and remind you that most of content creators actually really love hearing thoughts and impressions and just simple words of encouragement#another thing that was raised many times is the question of adding content to the body of the post versus tags#it's a matter of tumblr etiquette that used to be rather widely spread and nowadays is a little bit less known#but generally speaking it's much more tumblr-etiquette acceptable to add your opinions and excitement in the tags#meanwhile adding things inside the body of the reblog is usually reserved to additions that compliment the creative flow of the post itself#for instance if someone drew something and someone adds a complimentary art / edit/ fic or someone made a HC & you add a HC that builds ON#If someone made a shit post and you add a complimentary shit posting comment it's incredible also#people seem to be confusing people not wanting cluttered posts (aka a post with 10 'DHBRSTH' comments on- that are hard to reblog)#with people not wanting comments / tags with opinions at all#I know it's something that takes some time to figure but it does come with time#I'm rambling haha but yes.#You know everything in moderation. Most content creators I know ARE really interested in engaging with the fandom.#Respecting one's work is also important though aka don't use someone's post to dis a character or prompt your own stuff#or fully contradict OP (example 'wouldn't it be sweet if A&B cuddled? Reblog with: they don't like cuddling they'll like hiking)#(re: contradicting. when your HC/addition fully contradicts op creative direction-- the right thing to do is to make your own post :D !)#(since 100% there would be people who like your own take also ~! )#this concludes this saga i think‚ for the sharp eyed you'd notice the OCD timing in which I've chosen to record this xD#It felt good seeing people interact and talk and reblog with abandon. I miss this a lot. This sort of community VIBE.#buns.txt#tumblr issues#long post
