thoughts on the final episodes of Shokugeki No Soma / Food Wars

- he was her brother. what the fuck

- LOVE the mother-daughter relationship between Erina and Mana. The arc did make sense to me now, kind of, though I still kinda wish they finished with the Nakiri family drama last season. Erina is her mom's personal chef! The secret to beating the God Tongue is not perfection beyond question (as Azami attempted to do), but a love for cooking that surpasses perfection or needing it succeed every single time! The secret to being a family, even a messed up broken one, is a love for one another that surpasses perfection or needing to succeed every single time!

- Soma asking Erina who she wanted to cook for and Erina deciding that it was her mom

- Also, I love how even in Erina's childhood flashbacks, her other never criticized her? She always encouraged Erina first and foremost

- I'm a die-hard fan of married couples getting their crap together, so I loved Mana and Azami. Gloomy guy. Girl with weird eyebrows. Their rivals-to-loves backstory is so *chef's kiss*

- but Asahi being Azami's son??? Erina's brother?????

- Erina's relationship with food really takes on a whole new level here. First there was her dad forcing her to value perfection over all else; now it turns out her mom left the family because she despaired of someone actually meeting the needs of (what I now think of as) her disability, which is novel, experimental dishes. That would require someone who has enough confidence (and little enough ego) to actually try new things

- This also shows the difference between Erina's and Soma's cooking. Erina sees food as something she has to subdue and control and fine-tune to perfection; Soma experiments and plays and lets his dish become what it can be

- That soft look on Mana's face. Even before she gets to try Erina's dish, Soma succeeded by bringing the fun of cooking to her and Erina. What she missed the most, it seems, was not some out of this world, special flavor, but playfulness, with love as its foundation

- I am legit curious what Erina made tho????

- the flashbacks of the generation of prodigies. so adorable!!! i also find it very interesting that megumi was one of the people who were literally handpicked, considering that she was failing in the beginning of the series. furthermore, i'm curious what handpicked actually meant? did those students get scholarships? assured acceptances? or did the Nakiri family just put the idea in their parents' heads?

- For an anime that grapples with success and ambition, I think it's so inspiring that the final match the main character does shows that he wins before the results of the match are revealed (not literally, but the most important thing - bringing Erina back to herself, reminding people what it means to cook and participate in something you adore - has been achieved)

- Asahi was still calling Erina princess after he discovered that he was her brother wtf alksdjf al;skdjf ;aslkf dasldf

- it was nice to see Eishi helping Rindo for a change. Character development: Now he's the one assisting her. She also has another friend, Megishima, looking out for her well-being and checking in with her, which makes me think that ramen dude had a hadn in helping Eishi and Rindo communicate better

- I unexpectedly ship Momo and Saito. They're sweet together

- The backstory of Soma's mom is perfect <3

- I feel like there's something unresolved with Soma. Him just randomly taking off in the middle of a party to sharpen his skills? It's...weird, and kind of hurtful, if you think about it. He has the resources and skills from the Elite 10 to travel and work with his friends. But he just took off? Why? Is he only good with failure insofar as he's constantly doing something about it, and actually sitting with the feeling aggravates him? I think that's an interesting theme that can be explored since it is consistent with his actions of the series. But mostly I kinda wish he stayed with his friends; and when he traveled, he made a conscious effort to keep in touch with them.

- Soma never really did pick a once-and-for-all love interest. Like, it's pretty much confirmed that Nakiri is in love with him by the final scene, but he's as nonchalant with her as ever. This is such a fascinating choice, for an anime that does emphasize love

- Rolling off from the last point, I actually think that's great? Soma does dedicate himself and his cooking to others--and he does it one dish at a time. He dedicated himself to finding a dish that will beat Hayama. He dedicated himself to finding a dish that will satisfy Nakiri. (I understand there's a parallel with Azami wanting Mana to say delicious, but Soma really does do it with everyone he serves his food to.) His father encouraged him to dedicate himself to one person, and he does--the person in front of him. Soma has a big, generous heart, and I want him to be given credit for that generosity

- The center of Food Wars is ambition, but the center of that ambition is love, and that is what makes it one of my favorite anime of all time
