I’m really glad anime dubs are finally starting to get back to taking themselves seriously. I feel like there was a period of time where they tried to make EVERY SINGLE THING funny and it got so embarrassing, but from what I’ve seen of the mp100 and bnha dub, it’s so refreshing to see people like you know, actually ACTING in them and not just doing anime voices

Don’t know how much more ducks I wanna draw. For now, I wanted to get this out of the way. This is dubbed the “Stranger Things” AU, where Miyu Moreno met Drake as young teens, but under bad circumstances. Basically Drake and his classmate Elmo Sputterspark befriend Miyu and dub themselves the “Weirdo Club.” And they just enjoy an entire autumn doing fun shenanigans while trying to find leads to Miyu’s possible relatives. WARNING: LONG story description. Read at your own peril
Miyu’s adoptive mother, Lucia Moreno, did not survive the risky operation to cure her illness. This left Miyu an orphan, and unable to look after herself. What’s worse was being secretly watched by strange people who claimed “child services.” The spirits and yokai warned her of the shady government agents. Out of desperation and fear, Miyu snuck out of Japan to America when she was thirteen, hoping to find any relatives who could take her in. Unfortunately she was still being tracked by the shady agents, so she ran and hid as far as she could. She stayed hidden, barely surviving in a rumored “haunted house,” in the homely town of St. Canard.
Young teen Drake Mallard would brave his way into the haunted house to retrieve his classmate’s bag, which was maliciously disposed by some schoolyard bullies. That’s how he stumbles into a half-starved Miyu, and a bunch local ghosts and a few yokai. Drake barely understood Miyu’s plight, but decided to visit her and help. While trying to teach Miyu with English, Drake discovered some untranslated and translated manga at his local bookstore, and used these as a teaching aid for Miyu and himself. Drake has been introduced to Anime much earlier and now has even more things to nerd over. Our boi is dorkier than ever and I don’t regret a thing.
Over a month, his classmate noticed something was up with Drake. They are not friends, but they are friendly to each other. Drake decided to trust Elmo on his secret, and soon Elmo became part of the “weirdo” club. Miyu would mostly stay hidden, but she occasionally pops out in public when she’s dragged to movies or possible school events. They did share a very awesome Halloween. Drake and Elmo would research possible leads to Lucia Moreno’s relatives or any past work acquaintances. Miyu would try to dreg up clues or help from the local spirits also. At some point, Drake’s mother found out about Miyu when she came home early from shopping and caught Drake trying to smuggle in Miyu to his house. After getting an explanation, she decided to let Miyu stay, though she really wants to alert authorities about the “runaway child.” She does see how Miyu is deadly scared of any “bad men” finding out, since a few had posed as government workers.
The shady agents from Japan have tracked Miyu down, and it’s revealed that they are Onmyoji hunting down Miyu for her magic. Drake and Miyu hastily embark on a road trip to flee from the Onmyojis and seek out the past Darkwing actors. With Elmo occasionally guiding them via radio and Miyu’s helpful spirits, they are able to visit the main Darkwing villain actors and ask about Lucia. While they have good things to say about her brief time on the show, they do not know much about Lucia’s family or if she even had family here. During their biking trip, they befriend a stray Grim, who has kept stealthy vigil over Drake and Miyu. When they finally meet Jim Starling, they are given even more disappointing news. Jim was really shocked that Lucia had adopted a kid during her time recovering and feels guilty about Miyu being an orphan. Jim lies about not knowing Lucia much, not wanting to reveal that his dangerous stunts were the cause of Lucia being injured during set, resulting in her damaging her voice and falling ill. Rather than risk the show being cancelled, Jim had suggested to the writers and producers to drop Lucia from the show. Drake is a bit hesitant to believe that this acting hero is lying, when all the other actors remember Lucia. Miyu has practically given up when their final lead knows nothing.
The Darkwing actors had actually met up shortly at Jim’s signing to ask if he had met Drake and Miyu. They are concerned that two kids are trekking a long way, and hope to rectify their poor judgment of letting the kids go on their merry way. They are disappointed that Jim had practically lied to a bunch of kids, knowing that he too knew Lucia during the short time on set. At that moment, the 2 Onmyojis start interrogating the crew, claiming they are investigators looking for 2 runaway children. One of them however, is pissed and hates dealing with the “normies.” The actors deny knowing where the kids went, and Jim lies though his teeth that the kids probably hit the bus to the next town. When the Onmyojis leave, everyone is officially freaking out. All of the actors are calling the cops and contacting old colleagues who had worked on the Darkwing production. Jim is too freaked out to do anything and doesn’t want to get involved.
When the Onmyojis finally catch up to Miyu and Drake, Drake was almost killed. Witnessing this caused Miyu to awaken her Kitsune blood. Miyu’s real mother was a kitsune, which has given her a sixth sense for the supernatural and magic. Jim Starling had stumbled on this fight while on his way home, and attempted to help. He was easily subdued and injured in the process. After Miyu maliciously subdued all yokai shikigamis (onmyoji summons) and the 2 Onmyojis, the police and paramedics were able to come in time. Drake is diagnosed to be in coma, with low chances of waking up, and this breaks Miyu. Jim feels terrible that he was practically useless and that he was the reason that Lucia was ill and had to seek treatment, which ultimately killed her. Drake’s mother is wracked with grief, but she doesn’t blame Miyu, seeing how much Miyu blames herself. During the fight with the Onmyojis, they reveal that they had sabotaged the operation that would supposedly cure Lucia’s illness. They wanted Miyu easily vulnerable to induct her into their ranks as an Onmyoji in their organization. Miyu blames her existence and her magic for hurting people around her. Out of desperation, Miyu consulted whatever yokai friends for a solution, and prays for Inari, the Kami closely related to Kitsune and possibly the Kami her kitsune mother had served. Inari appears as a spectral apparition and warns Miyu that she will weaken in magic, even with Inari’s help. Miyu doesn’t care for magic anymore. Drake finds himself in a spectral limbo and told about the plight happening in the living realm. Drake doesn’t want Miyu to sacrifice her magic for him, and stubbornly makes his way towards a gateway back to the living, but with great difficulty.
Drake still has to stay hospitalized, but he only needs to heal from a broken arm, and surprisingly, his skull has recovered nicely. Miyu’s magic has been sapped near dry, so all proficiency she had gained is back to level 0. However, Miyu would still have to be processed into Foster Care. There is no guarantee that Miyu will find a stable place to keep in contact with Drake through long-distance letters. Jim had talked a bit with Miyu, asking about her life with Lucia. Wanting to appease his guilt and truly being sorry for Miyu, he manages to take in Miyu as his foster child. He wants to give Miyu a stable home so she can keep consistent correspondence with Drake and Elmo.
Miyu and Jim are able to visit St. Canard every month, especially during school vacation breaks. This gives the kiddies a chance to continue on their Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Jim has started to get the hang of being their Dungeon Master. Now that Jim is a foster father, slowly becoming an adoptive father, he bites down his pride and takes any small gigs to pay bills. But this has been good for him. He’s slowly gaining momentum as an actor, though nothing too noteworthy. Miyu is quite proud of Jim doing his best, and always makes it a routine to pack a bento for him. She finds every chance to personally bring it to him. Over time, Miyu has regained her proficiency in magic in her late teenage years. Jim has been getting good support and contact with his old DW crew, and some parenting advice from Mss. Mallard. Drake has been taking good care of the Grim, who is now lovingly named “Kage.” When Miyu is in her teenage years, Jim is actually nailing a lot more Duckflix gigs who have taken some note of Jim’s improving repertoire. It also helps that he’s become less of a jerk.

AN: Lots of stuff happening. Also I wrote most of this after emptying an entire bottle of cider by myself so I take no responsibility for any mistakes (yes I sunk that low)
Warnings: probably swearing (idek anymore), alcohol?
“I’m in trouble Lisa, he’s definitely trouble”, I said to my best friend as I stood in my closet, phone pressed to my ear. Ever since the party my thoughts had been running wild and I had come to the realization that I couldn’t handle being just friends with benefits with Tyler. Right now it was more like friends with one-sided feelings.
“Yeah I saw that coming from a mile away. What changed?”
I told her how I’d been the last one to leave Tyler’s house at the party last week. After dancing around with Roope and Jamie I’d sat outside for a while to cool off, Tyler joining me on the sofa not long after. He’d started pestering me for juicy details of my threesome, but Lisa and I had promised each other to not tell any specifics. As soon as he realized that I wouldn’t tell him who it was with he gave up on the topic, switching to something less intrusive instead.
We’d spent the rest of the night there, only leaving once to grab more blankets as the temperature dropped. With my legs tucked underneath me and his arm around my body, apparently I’d looked like I was cold, we’d spent hours talking and trying to see the stars dimmed by the city lights. As the time had passed I’d found myself snuggling closer and closer but at one point I practically couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore.
He tried to convince me to stay, but with my house only being a five minute walk away there was no logical reason to accept his offer, even if I really wanted to. The dogs had all found comfortable spots on his couch to sleep and the sight was so domestic that it almost broke my heart to wake Yogi up so we could leave.
Tyler had insisted on walking me home again and as I hugged him goodbye I knew that I was in some deep shit. It wasn’t like I’d actively tried to avoid falling for anyone up to this point, I’d just had a more it’ll happen when it happens approach, meaning I didn’t particularly look for anyone either.
In hindsight I should have seen it coming with the amount of time we spent with each other and the way he reminded me of the one guy I’d ever had feelings for but yet it still took me by surprise.
He’d texted me a couple of times while being away and saying that I wasn’t looking forward to his snapchats would be a lie.
“So what are you going to do now?”, Lisa asked after listening to me telling her about what happened. I had thought about this a lot, especially since Tyler had asked me to come over for a bit before his first game of the pre season tonight. I wanted to go and watch in person but Mia wasn’t free tonight and I didn’t want to go by myself, so I promised I’d cheer on him from the confines of my couch.
Mia, Jason and I had finished working on our first day together an hour ago and I had just stepped out of the shower when Lisa had finally returned my calls.
“I don’t really have a choice, either it’s just friends or something more and I’m pretty sure that that isn’t what he is looking for right now.” I didn’t want to ruin our friendship by admitting anything to him prematurely so my only option was to wait for him to take the first step.
“You don’t know that.”
“Well no but I don’t know, seems highly unlikely.”
I put her on speaker as I put on some yoga pants and a loose shirt and when I looked at my screen I saw that I had a message from Tyler.
Ty: I’m cooking do you want some?
Me: Depends on what you’re cooking because I’m not in the mood for food poisoning
Ty: Funny as always..
Ty: Pasta, salmon and some salad I think even I can handle that
I hadn’t eaten lunch yet either, so I called for Yogi and then told Lisa that I had to hang up now.
“Go get your man.”
“Fuck off Lisa.”
The weather was nice today so it came as no surprise that Gerry was enjoying the pool, Marshall and Cash still wet from having taken a dip themselves sometime before we arrived. Yogi was more than happy to join the action and I already dreaded having to brush out the tangles in his fur tonight.
The food actually smelled really good and this time I let Tyler tell me what to do, as I didn’t want to mess with any pre-game superstitions. He did let me make some adjustments to the pasta sauce though. We took our meals outside so we could properly enjoy the sunshine, something I knew we both liked to do.
I tried to act normal and I was pretty sure that I was doing a great job or at least Tyler didn’t let it on if he picked up on something being off.
It was crazy, ever since my realization my feelings had snowballed and now I found myself overthinking every little action, trying to figure out what was going on in his head while also being confused of the mess that was my thoughts.
Afterwards we settled in the media room to watch some kind of animal documentary that Jamie had recommended, but we ended up mostly just talking and laughing until it was time for his nap and for me to go home again. Time always seemed to fly with him.
“I won’t wish you good luck because you’re definitely too good for that. Have fun tonight Ty, I’ll be watching closely.”
“Thanks, I’ll try my best to put one in the net for you.”
I hugged him closely and he pressed a kiss to my temple, making my thoughts go crazy. Perhaps him leaving for over a week on a roadtrip after the game would give me some much needed distance.
Tumblr media
He didn’t put one in the net for me that night and I felt bad for him because of the loss, even if it was still only a pre season game. The team had been doing well after that, winning the following two games but Tyler hadn’t been on the ice for those.
Mia had asked me to go out with her because Elias would be staying with her grandparents for the weekend and without having any say in it I found myself in a crowded country bar on a Saturday evening. I’d even donned some boots that Mia had dug up from somewhere but I drew the line at the jeans shorts and a flannel, opting for long skinny jeans and a normal shirt instead. The boots were cute but I was nowhere near a country girl so the full get-up would only feel phony.
Mia taught me some dance moves and I even tried riding the bull-thingy, unsurprisingly not lasting very long. It did make me thirsty though so I made my way over to the bar, which offered a broad selection of beers to my delight.
“I could give you some lessons if you want me to”, I heard a voice next to me. I turned to my left and recognized the guy who had sat on the bull before me. While the time he lasted on the damn thing was impressive in itself, I’d been more captivated by his looks.
He had given me a ‘The Longest Ride’ vibe from the moment I laid eyes on him, a dark haired version of Scott Eastwood. For a second I contemplated shooting him down, but he gave off genuinely nice guy vibes with his bright smile and I could really use the distraction right now.
“How about we start with a drink instead?”, I asked, giving him my best smile. He chuckled but waved over the bartender nevertheless, ordering a round of shots and beer after taking a look at the bottle that I had in my hand.
His name was Mark and he had to lean down to hear me because he was so tall. This made me miss my heels but I also kind of liked the way he had to get close to me during our conversation at the bar.
“I’m actually here with a friend though and I don’t want to abandon her.”
“No need for that, why don’t you just bring her over to our booth over there?” He pointed over to a small group of guys that could have made up the cover of a cowboy calendar. Mia would be more than happy to spend some time with them.
She didn’t mind at all, of course, only telling me that this reminded her of our days in college when we didn’t have to spend any money at all and still stumbled out of the club drunk.
Hours later I was still dancing with Mark but what had started innocently was not so innocent by now. He had taken off his flannel long ago and his cowboy hat was now firmly planted on my hair while got to enjoy his tan skin and muscular built, results of hard work on his horse ranch.
I hadn’t gotten laid in almost two months and all the confusion from the situation with Tyler made me want to go further than I usually did with random strangers. It also helped that he could be the lead actor in any country romance movie. Mia seemed to really get along with one of his friends who promised to take good care of her and gave me his address so I could hunt him down if needed. Let’s just say it wasn’t like she minded me disappearing either.
It wasn’t until the next morning, after seeing Mark out, that I realized that I had forgotten to check on Tyler’s game, his messages from last night still unopened and portraying the frustration he felt after playing and having to watch Minnesota put six in the net.
Tumblr media
Tonight I would finally get to watch Tyler play. I had to miss the game on Thursday because I had to attend some meetings for Bumble in Austin yesterday but now it was finally time.
After a brutal workout at the gym I’d gone over to his house in the morning to make breakfast after his morning skate, something that had somehow turned into our weekend routine.
It was the last game of the pre season and against Denver out of all teams. Mara had texted me earlier to tell me that while she was still rooting for the Avs, she wouldn’t be mad if they lost tonight, which was a compliment in itself.
Mia had arranged for a sitter so she could come to the game with me and I insisted on going over to AAC early so we could watch the warmups, wanting her to get the full experience for her very first ice hockey game. I didn’t have a Stars jersey but I did own a hoodie in victory green. Tyler had offered to hook me up with some merch but I declined because I honestly couldn’t handle wearing his jersey right now.
Mark had been an alright distraction but as soon as I saw Tyler again after the trip I was reminded of the mixed feelings that I was desperately trying to get in order.
The sex with Mark had been fun, although not mindblowing, and under different circumstances I probably would have hooked up with him again but I needed to get my shit together first. While throwing myself under someone else to get over whatever this thing with Tyler was sounded very appealing, I knew that it would only distract me for so long.
Mia honked from my driveway, ripping me out of my thoughts and I checked Yogi’s food and water again before grabbing my things and making my way out of the door. Following Emily’s recommendation I had installed a doggy door that would only open when a chip in his collar got close, meaning he was free to roam the backyard as he wished while still not enabling any instrusions. It was kind of ugly but I’d figure out a way to make it look good. This way he would be fine on his own for the next couple of hours at least.
I could tell that Mia was excited, her choice of music only pumping her up even more. I was really looking forward to this as well. My last hockey game had been during the playoffs in Denver and while watching the games on TV so far was fine, nothing beat watching them live.
We were early enough to still snatch a spot up at the glass for warmups next to a family, something I’d never experienced either. Whenever I’d go with the girls one of us had always taken longer than planned so by the time we’d make it to the arena we could only watch from our seats.
Mia and I had seen each other almost every day of the week so far, but yet we still found things to talk about until the guys finally stepped onto the ice. After passing some pucks Tyler skated a lap around the rink, stopping in front of us when he finally spotted me.
“Look who finally made it”, he teased and I was tempted to flip him off but I was also very aware of the many eyes watching our every move so I only stuck my tongue out at him.
“Yeah and you better win tonight or I’m not coming again.” I was kidding of course.
“I guess I have no choice then.”
“I know you’ll do great. Go ahead and crush them”, I said and he looked like he wanted to say something, but then stopped himself, which of course only made me curious. It was times like this where I was almost convinced that perhaps he liked me back as well but I knew how unlikely that was. I might not be a professional athlete but I did understand the perks of not settling down as well.
He was called over for some drills, effectively breaking the look we shared right now and he shot a quick smile at me before tapping his stick to the glass and then skating off.
“Just friends my ass”, Mia whispered in my ear and I elbowed her in turn. I was surprised that she’d picked up on the weird tension between Tyler and I. We’d talked about him a couple of times during the week, especially as we’d made plans for the game tonight, but I hadn’t told anyone but Lisa about my current dilemma. She sensed I wasn’t in the mood to elaborate though and quickly let it go after that, which I was really thankful for.
After the warmups we decided to grab some food and drinks before finally settling in our seats. Katie had asked us to join her and the others up in the box but I declined, wanting to spend some one on one time with an old friend during the game. Besides I’d be up there during opening night soon enough.
The game wasn’t off to a very good start and while the first period was action packed on both sides, it left the Stars trailing behind by two goals. Mia was a bit confused at first but I gave her a quick crash course and soon enough she picked up on the mood in the arena, following the lead of the other fans on when to cheer and when to boo.
I used intermission to wait in the ridiculously long line for the restrooms and to check my phone, Mara flooding the group chat with messages that were practically a play by play of the game. I shot a quick text to Tyler, even if I knew that he probably wouldn’t get a look at his phone until after the game.
It was different to watch a game when you actually knew the players on the ice. I probably hadn’t been this on the edge of my seat during any sporting event since the soccer world cup finals in 2014.
After Tyler finally scored my screaming could probably be heard by Mara all the way in Denver. Mia and I were hugging each other, way too excited for the Avs still being in the lead.
Colorado scored again in the third and at this point I was already considering my options on how to cheer Tyler up. Mentally I was already going through my cute animals folder to pick out the cutest puppies to show Tyler afterwards, something that always made me feel better.
With less than four minutes left the Stars scored and Tyler had the assist so it was back to screaming and jumping for Mia and I. By the time Jamie scored to even out the score we were practically wrapped around each other, hoping for one last goal.
It didn’t happen and overtime wasn’t any better, not for lack of trying though.
“Your first time watching a hockey game and you get to watch a shootout you lucky bitch.”
“I’m just glad because this time it will be easy to follow the puck, the stupid thing moves so fast that I lose it every few seconds.”
At this point we couldn’t even stay seated if we wanted to, not that we did, because everyone else was on their feet to see what would happen. Shootouts were always brutal and not for the first time that night I was glad that I’d put on some lipstick because otherwise my lips would probably bleed from constantly biting them. Life hack by the way.
With the sound of the final buzzer I was pulled into the arms of the middle aged man to my left that I had never seen before, but I didn’t mind because I was so happy that the Stars had won. For this being only a pre season game things surely had escalated quickly.
Mia was still buzzing by the time we made our way out of the arena, enthusiastically recounting her favorite moments of the game. She would probably never watch games on TV but I knew from experience that it was hard not to fall for hockey when you got to watch games live. Perhaps I could take her again sometime, I had a feeling that she’d like glass seats even better.
The amount of fans trying to leave at the same time had slowed us down quite a bit so we were still at the parking garage when I felt my phone buzz with a call.
“Hey Ty what’s up?”
“Sorry I just got out of the shower or I would have called sooner but I wanted to ask if you want to come out with us tonight. You should bring your friend too, we’re celebrating the end of a good pre season.”
I really tried not to think of him dripping wet from his shower but it still took me a couple of seconds to relay his invitation to Mia.
“Sorry I can’t, the sitter can’t stay over that late but you should definitely go out with them.” I didn’t want to abandon Mia in the parking lot like this, but she practically forced me to say yes and not soon after I was led through the arena by a security guard that Tyler had sent.
There was a group already waiting outside the locker rooms when I arrived, some of the guys greeting me enthusiastically. Roope even went as far as to lift me up so he could spin me around, saying that I was their good luck charm. I didn’t spot Tyler yet but I did see some of the girls so I made my way over to them. Some people must have already left, especially the players with kids, but the group was still big due to some of the rookies coming along as well.
I was just talking to Katie and Dominika about the game when I felt strong arms wrap around me from behind. By now I was very familiar with Tyler’s scent so I didn’t even hesitate before reaching up to put my hands on his forearms, tilting my head so I could smile up at him.
“We won so that means you can never miss a home game again”, he said and I laughed, not quite remembering that part of the agreement but also not willing to protest either.
The group must have finally been complete because now everyone was walking towards the exit, making a lot of noise and drawing looks from the few remaining employees.
I’d gotten my fair share of VIP treatment, money does solve a lot of problems after all, but yet I never really got used to the judging looks of people when security guards usher you through. The bouncers didn’t even question the presence of the rookies, even though some of them were definitely still underage, yet another bonus. It was the same club I’d been to with the girls a couple of weeks ago but up in the lounge everything was much more relaxed and the tables were actually clean.
“First round of shots is on me as a thank you for being so nice to me ever since I met all of you”, I called out before handing the waitress my credit card, loud cheering erupting from the rest of the group.
“Ooof our sugar mama, look at that shiny black”, Katie whooped and I just winked at her, receiving a kiss on the cheek in return. Meeting Tyler had been great in itself, but the friends I had made through him were a close second. I’d endure an eternity of unrequited feelings if it meant getting to keep everyone else in my life.
Several rounds of shots later I was out of breath from all the dancing, choosing to take a break in the lounge once again. Our group was split up by now, some lingering up here and others still tearing up the dance floor. I’d done my fair share of dancing as well, jumping around with the boys and pulling out the sexy moves with the girls. Hockey players definitely came in clutch for that part, as not a single guy came up to bother us, too scared of the human fridges that always kept a watchful eyes on us.
I’d danced with Tyler the most, his slight lack of rhythm being a great excuse to make him wrap his arms around me so I could ‘guide’ him. Perhaps I was a masochist after all.
I could spot Esa and Anna having a dance off with Klinger and Fanny from my spot against the railing and I watched them for a while before looking around some more.
Tyler was standing close to the bar, currently talking to one of his friends that had arrived some time after us. Tonight had been the first night where I could see his NHL fame in full action and it was both mesmerizing and terrifying to watch.
At all the other parties he’d known the other guests to some capacity at least so it wasn’t as bad, but tonight I got to watch girls literally throw themselves at him. Yes literally, I’d watched one of them ‘accidentally’ trip so he had to prevent her from falling not long ago. Some waited until I left his side, some just straight up didn’t care, interrupting our conversations or dancing without any regard for me. To my surprise I’d seen him turn down every single one of them so far but it was like a Roman battle formation, others always stepped up to close the gap. They were hot, there was no doubt about that and if I’d swing that way I’d definitely pick up some of them myself.
“I’m surprised Tyler let you out of his reach.” Roope’s voice ripped me out of my people watching trance and I looked up to him in question.
“I just overheard some of the rookies talking about how you’re fair game because they think that he hasn’t locked you down yet. I kinda want one of them to make a move so I can watch him put them in their place, he knows what’s going on.”
“You’re being mean. You were a rookie not so long ago.”
“Yeah and I had to deal with lots of shit so now it’s my turn.” I only shook my head at his ridiculousness, not really wanting to respond to his statement. Technically they were right and no matter how much I tried to convince myself of the opposite, that definitely stung a little bit.
“I’m being a good friend right now so I’m telling you that there’s this girl who’s been looking at you all evening and she looks like she’s nice. You could even braid each other’s hair,” I deflected, pointing towards the girl in question. Roope shoved me before flipping me off but his smile said that he’d go down to talk to her either way.
I chugged down the last few sips of my beer, quickly making my way back downstairs before any of the rookies could act out on their stupid idea. I doubted that Tyler would actually lash out at them if they did but I also didn’t want to tempt fate. Tyler waved me over as soon as he saw me walking down the stairs and I slowly made my way towards him, the writhing sweaty bodies and my height, or lack thereof, not helping at all.
I wasn’t even surprised anymore when he pulled me towards him as soon as I finally made it. Despite his bad boy looks I knew by now that he was a big teddy bear who loved to cuddle, the alcohol only making it worse. Or better, because he gave amazing hugs. He’d introduced me to his friend a while ago and I seamlessly slipped into their conversation until Tyler took me by surprise when he asked me if I was ready to leave yet. A closer look made it clear how exhausted he really was, his tired eyes not something I’d noticed up until this point.
“I honestly would’ve just gone straight home after the game but the others practically forced me to invite you along so I had no other choice because I wanted to spend some time with you”, he said once we had made ourselves comfortable in the backseat of the uber.
My heart was doing somersaults of course but my brain told me that it couldn’t keep up reminding me for much longer that there was no way he actually liked me back. I’d never been on this side of feelings and I definitely wasn’t handling it well.

NYCC Panel Summary
Now that I’m finally home after a very long and very fun day at the SVTFOE panel (among other things) at NYCC, I’m gonna type up a summary from the notes I took. Note that some stuff is missing, I’m not gonna go into detail about every little thing; this is just what I found most important/interesting. Italics is my commentary on it. Bold is most important/new information. Not in any particular chronological order from the panel.
-Originally Ludo was going to pretend to be a student at Echo Creek Academy. She showed a bunch of her old sketches, most of which I’m told have been put online before but this one is supposedly brand new. Go birb boi go.
Tumblr media
-Daron always liked doing character-first writing, and the other stuff was figured out afterwards. No shit sherlock, maybe more people should hear this.
-As most people know, the original concept for SVTFOE had Star as a 4th grader who believed she was magical but it wasn’t real. The new piece of info, kinda, is that when the direction shifted towards Star being older and being magic, this is what led to Marco having as much importance as he does. Hmm I wonder why.
-Star and Marco are “such good friends” -Daron Nefcy, Oct 7, 2018. Sure Daron, sure. That’s all they are.
-Dominic Bisignano built the scenes that Janna has in Mewberty which led to her becoming a more major recurring character. Also Janna’s personality and last name were “borrowed” from one of Daron’s friends. Dom is the best, as usual.
-Daron sees a lot of herself in Star, and a lot of her husband in Marco. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
-The writers draft up 2-3 page outlines and give them to the storyboarders who get to actually make the episode in full (including dialogue, scenes, etc) over 6 weeks. Daron personally checks in a few times during that process to make sure it’s all gelling with their concepts. I always knew one of the show’s strengths was that it was board-driven while the writers still maintained pretty tight control over the broader narrative, but it’s nice to have some more concrete info for this.
-When asked about hardest eps to make, she mentioned animating crowds was tricky. Writing-wise, eps with tons of deep history/lore require more effort, and eps without the Star/Marco dynamic are hard because that dynamic is very reliable/sturdy. HMM IT’S ALMOST LIKE THAT’S A CORNERSTONE OF THE SHOW GUYS. If I have one regret about the panel it’s that I couldn’t ask a followup about how they felt writing so much of S3 with them apart. Clearly the distance was intentional to the story, but I wonder if they felt it would be as rough as it came across to the viewers.
-Daron has been involved in the writing of every single episode, the creation of every character, and selection of all of the voice actors. Neat.
-Patrick Stump actually contacted Disney about doing some sort of voice acting work on his own, and the casting director contacted Daron since Daron was looking for someone for the part of Ruberiot to sing a rock opera. She actually wasn’t totally sure right away, so Stump volunteered to audition, and did. He got the part. Shocker.
-Daron wrote the parts for Skywynne, Festivia, Crescenta, Estrella (well, drew), and a lot of Glossayrck in the Book of Spells. Amber and Dom split the rest. Also, Daron made all of Festivia’s tweets fit the character limit for Twitter, but that changed in editing. Stupid editors, ruining attention to detail.
-Dom actually tested all the pie recipes in the book of spells.
-Daron was bummed that the internet deciphered Low Mewnian so easily.
-Some details in the book were changed along the way last minute to connect to Season 4 content. Eclipsa will personally use some of her spells in the book (and will be very involved in S4 overall), and we’ll enjoy season 4 much more if we’ve read the book, apparently. Cool.
-They’re still hard at work on the show, and producing about an episode per week supposedly? Obviously she doesn’t mean a full episode is completely finished per week, because otherwise all of S4 would be done in a month or two.
-When asked about Tom, Daron said that he always had potential to be more than just the angry ex and that Rider’s performance was a part of that. She didn’t really give many specifics there and just reiterated that she did character-first writing after that.
-The 650 dollars running joke was just a random thing inserted in Goblin Dogs and they scrambled to make an explanation for it later, thus tricking us into thinking she is a wizard of foreshadowing.
-Daron’s approach to balancing comedy and seriousness is that the characters themselves should be more lighthearted and funny, so they can be lights even in dark situations. Which works except when they’re super depressed for most of the season. Not that comedy was ABSENT from S3, but it still just felt way heavier all around.
-Daron doesn’t really receive any pushback on political stuff in the show, but probably mainly because it’s all fantasy. They can get away with a lot when unrealistic character types are involved and can get really allegorical. For instance, she is not allowed to have a character punch another human character in the face, but with unicorns it’s totally fine. Season 4 montage of Ponyhead being used as a punching bag for Marco’s workout routine CONFIRMED. Star will eagerly watch him work out shirtless.
And of course the clip.

INTERVIEW: Legendary Voice Actress Kikuko Inoue
Among the industury guests at Anime Central 2018 was Kikuko Inoue, a veteran voice actress whose work has defined anime for the past two decades. We had a change to interview her about her career, relationships, and history in the industry as a star so great she needs no introduction, because she provides it herself!
Kikuko Inoue: Hello, my name is Kikuko Inoue, I've been a voice actor for 30 years, but actually the joke is that I'm 17 years old and my fans respond with "Oi! Oi!" so every time I'm at an event I use that introduction. Within the voice acting industry, I have a lot of voice actor friends who have joined what I've created, called the 17 Years Old Club, such as Horie Yui and Tamura Yukari. So, one of my first prominent roles was Kasumi from Ranma 1/2 and she was the older sister I got my nickname "oneechan," or "older sister" from that role. I was also Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess and I've acted her on several different occasions, and for quite a long time so I feel like that's a role that's watched over me for a long time. Actually I get a lot of offers for mother or older sister characters, and especially recently I've been offered a lot of mother-like characters, but of course there are characters that are good mothers and bad mothers and I... will play both. *Laughs*
When I play these rather evil or bad mothers in shows I'm pretty sad to play those roles and have to be the villain in that case, but then, usually it's the case that the story has the child maturing and growing up, and overcoming such obstacles, and being able to move the audience in such a way that I, at the end of the show, feel very relieved to have been a part of it. The most recent example is The Ancient Magus' Bride, where I played Chise's mother, and she was a rather evil mother, but that the main character was able to overcome that obstacle was a big relief to me.  Since I do voice a lot of characters that are the mothers and older sisters, it's actually kind of refreshing and exciting for me to start to voice some of the villains as well. When I actually do voice the villain characters I get to say lines that I would definitely never utter myself in real life, but in a sense it's kind of like a feeling of catharsis. Of course other than anime I also have voiced a lot of characters in games and quite varying roles, such as Boss from Metal Gear Solid and I-No from Guilty Gear, so I'm definitely happy with my job and my life.
You've been voice acting since 1988, how has the field that you work in changed and developed over that time?
At first when I debuted I would just receive the script and be told to go to the studio, and then in front of the screen when I saw the footage for the first time I would be asked to voice act the role, but then maybe five or so years after I debuted I was actually able to receive a physical copy of the footage and be able to practice or view it at home before actually going to the studio. Once we got what a lot of us call "homework" we were able to practice many times over until our movements and our voices perfectly matched the mouth movements of the characters, so that we were able to nail it when we went into the studio.
Which role of yours do you think was the most important for your career?
I view all of the roles that I have played as my children, so I cannot honestly say one is more important than another.
A lot of the American voice actors talk about how when they record they're recording alone in the studio, but I believe in Japan they sometimes do group sessions. How does that work, do you do voices all at the same time or record on your own?
Yes, they definitely assemble the cast all together in one room, and this is common for all of the work that we do.  First we do a test run where everyone recites their lines and then the director has specific instructions for each actor where they say, "I want it more like this or like that," and after that instructional phase there is another test and then it goes onto the recording so a twenty or thirty minute episode probably takes three to four hours for us to record.
*She stands up to stand in front of a screen in the room to visually demonstrate the recording process she's explaining*
So as you can see, this is the screen where the footage is playing, there's probably three to four mics in the center of the room and everyone is sitting around in a circle, or a semi-circle and when it is your character that comes on-screen you have to find and open mic, it works like musical chairs, so you go to the first open mic to recite your lines and then as soon as your part is over you sit back down.  The work for the mic is pretty technical itself so a lot of the newer voice actors have a hard time finding a mic, or getting to the mic in time, so that's something that the voice actors have to learn.
Lust in Fullmetal Alchemist is a bit different from the type of character you often play, what was it like performing that role?
Even though Lust is a villain, she's a really cool character. *Laughs* Also, she's shown on a lot of the promotional items for Fullmetal Alchemist, so she's a pretty prominent character as well. When I was playing Lust, I pulled out the deepest depths of darkness within myself and then channeled that into the role.
Anime is really popular here in the United States, what do you feel about people seeing themselves in your characters and cosplaying them?
I really love cosplay! When I see someone cosplaying a character that I voice I get so excited that I wanna run over and greet them right away, and actually yesterday I took a lot of pictures together with people I saw that were cosplaying characters that I've voiced.
In 2009 you founded your own talent agency, Office Anemone, what got you interested in your own agency and how has that experience been?
Actually the president and other co-founder of Office Anemone is my older sister, who said "let's work together and form an agency," so I eventually decided that I would join her in her quest, but even though I left my previous agency, the voice acting industry is a very small world so I am still very close with a lot of the voice actors that I worked with and I still speak with them on a regular basis. There's a sort of wordplay with the name Office Anemone, where "ane" means "older sister," and "ane mo ne," is "with my older sister," but also anemone is also the name of a flower in Japan, so people associate it with that, so it has a double meaning.
You've mentioned that you're friends with Tamura Yukari, how did you feel to see her and other friends rise in popularity over the years?
I'm very happy! I'm always happy to see someone succeed, and as I said earlier the voice acting industry is a very small industry so especially with my friends I'm very close, and very happy to see another member of the Seventeen Years Old Club succeed, since I see them as siblings.
Have you met any of your American counterparts, who've voiced the same characters you've voiced?
Yeah, since I've been to a few events in North America I've been able to meet a fair number of voice actors, and yesterday doing my autograph session the English voice actor for Ed was doing his autograph session in the booth right next to mine, so I got to meet him and that was exciting.
Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess is one of your most well-known and beloved roles, what about that performance specifically makes it so popular?
I think it's just the aura and existence of Belldandy is so sublime in a certain way, where she's nice but it's- "nice" is not even the proper word to describe her, her kindness surpasses a normal level of kindness, and of course it's because she's a goddess, but it seems like she would be accepting of you no matter what happens and you could go to her for anything.  It isn't just kindness or niceness, but she's very strong, she has a very strong heart, and she seems like the type of character that would be able to cheer you up no matter what you're going through.
In addition to anime you've done a lot of voice acting for video games, what are the main differences between acting for anime and video games, and do you prefer either of them?
Like I mentioned earlier, for voicing anime we are all together in the studio, and if I were to compare it to a sport, where in acting for games you're just alone by yourself in a booth, anime is like a team sport, like baseball, everyone is going to be behind you and back you if you need help form your teammates, whereas voicing for games is like long-distance running where you are by yourself.  I do actually love both, you're overcoming the obstacles and get to face the task head-on when you're voicing for games, so they both have their advantages and I love working on both. So using the same analogy of sport, when I'm working on anime I always have to be thinking of a strategy of how to back someone up or how to successfully play off the others that are working with me, in a sense pass or receive with the other teammates, and when we achieve a perfect recording or a perfect result it really feels like a great accomplishment that the team had together, and when you're working on a game, just like running a marathon your opponent is yourself so when you're able to surpass your own expectations it is a really good feeling.
If you weren't doing voice acting what would you be doing?
Maybe a maid? I really love maid outfits and I actually wear them a lot, so what about a maid cafe? But they might be a little concerned about my age... I'm seventeen! [room: Oi! Oi!]
You've appeared in both of Kunihiko Ikuhara's recent anime, Mawaru Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi. He's known for being one of the most unique directors in the industry, so if you have any, what are your impressions of Ikuhara-san from your work with him?
I think he is a really great talent and he has a really high level of skill for his worldbuilding, and we're actually pretty close in real age as well, so I feel like we can get along with each other pretty well and I would love to work with him again.
You said that as your daughter starts her voice acting career you wanted her to start out with smaller roles and then build up from there. How do you feel now that she's begun voicing main character roles, Sakura in Pazudora and then Ruby in the upcoming Sora to Umi no Aida?
You knew! (In English): "Thank you very much!" Well yes, my daughter is actually three years older than me, but yes, I had said that I wanted her to mature gradually and take on more responsibility, but to see her get main roles, I'm very happy about it and also quite surprised.  One example is in Puzzle and Dragons where she is voicing the heroine, I've recently been called to voice a lot of small roles as well, and in that particular one I was called in to voice her mother in the show, so it's quite fun for me to see the reversal of roles, for her to be the main character and me to be the side character.
You've also done some stage performances, playing your character Cordelia in Sakura Wars live shows, what was it like doing stage acting?
I've also thought about the voice acting job as something that's behind the scenes, that we don't really appear in front of audiences that often, but it was quite different for Sakura Wars in which the voice actors all wore cosplays of their characters, and not only that they did a song and dance on stage, so definitely while I was surprised it was REALLY fun and I never thought I'd be able to do such a job. We had a lot of practice for the show, such as song and dance lessons, and for me particularly dance was quite challenging and despite all of the dance practice that we did, I for the life of me could not remember all of the dance steps, so, during the actual live performance itself, the actor who played Coquelicot was standing next to me so I would step just half a foot back and view her dance from the sides and sort of copy her movements, so if she messed up I would also mess up (laughter).
If you had the opportunity to stage act again would you take it, or do you prefer voice acting as a more streamlined career?
Yes, definitely I would love to take the chance again, but of course as you know with age... wait I'm seventeen so... For me in life I just love anything that's fun, and actually my theme or motto in life is to live with a smile and to provide a smile for others, so I would definitely accept anything that's fun or provides enjoyment to others.
How did you get your start in voice acting?
Actually I went to a specialty school for voice actors, and after I graduated I became a voice actor.
Finally, do you have a message for your fans here in the West?
Thank you very much for loving and enjoying Japanese animation, I really appreciate the fact that Japanese anime is able to connect people around the world and please continue to support and enjoy Japanese anime.  Oh! And games too, please support games as well! Thank you very much!

2015.12.25 Litche☆Hikari Club Review
Tumblr media
And here we have my second stage review of the week! Enjoy!! (Btw, this picture above was taken at the cafe at the theater, they had a Litche themed cafe menu and everything!) HOLY SHIT THIS WAS SO GOOD!!!! Where do I start.... This was so good! We start with the teacher obviously being bossy and the hits her in the fact when she gets caught and killed by the Club, and then in the dance sequence (in underwear only) she's poledancing while the boys sing and do this amazing robo-techono dance <3 The story is the exact same as the manga and the previous play but this was just a whole lot better! Maybe because I'm more familiar with the story now than what I was when I watched the 2013 version a month ago... But back to the interesting points. This play was sexy as FUUUUUUUUCCCCKKK!!! Like holy SHIT! It was sweaty hot sexy! Like Zera and Jaibo actually kiss and Jaibo actually kissing down Zera's naked torso and like it REALISTICALLY looks like Jaibo is giving him a nice mouth job (for some reason I'm too shine to say the real word! xD) minus the fact the pants stay on. AND OMG! (I think) Duff's masturbation part was more realistic this time too and goes on for a LONG time and the moans are SO life like. Just holy shit, this was fecking hot! And the dances! OMG the dances! And the music!!! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it's all so good! IkeP can fucking dance! They call kind! It's serious hiphop type stuff and omg!!! I didn't really know any of the other actors (although I recognise the two slightly shorter but large actors) so I had no expectations of them but I have to say; they all did amazing! Zera definitely. He held such an air and his moments towards the end were gold! His acting was superb. I also really liked Jaibo's, Duff and Kaneda's performance. Tamiya I prefer in the 2013 version but he still did a good job here but I felt he didn't have as much of a presence or at least he didn't feel as important in this version. And of course IkeP was amazing, his comedy came from playing a really camp personality to then having his voice really deep whenever he was angry which was hilarious xD And just like in Yuhiden, he is able to make his entire body language fit the character which adds to the extra atmosphere and memorance of his character <3 I really like the flashback scene they did  as well as the scene when Tamiya and co are at the beach and it has a pervy scene going on at the same time on stage and it's amazing how the characters act like they're in one scene but another scene is happening at the exact same time. It's difficult to explain but I like how they did it. I also prefered Kanon and Litche's relationship more in this version. There's a scene where she teaches him to play the piano and it's so beautiful as well as her voice! OH! Also the whole yelling "Zera! Zera! Zera! Zera!" was always a great moment. This version/time instead of blood spurting all over the audience, we had tons of water fall from the cieling which was great! They were running around and fighting and you could just see the front 3 rows trying to shield themselves from it xD If you don't want that seat I'll bloody take it!!! I personally am I fan of running through heavy water and just allowing it cos jump up and completely soak me and my surroundings and I think the actors did too cos there were so many spins and stuff during the water scene and it just went absolutely everywhere! I really love Zera's break down in this play. And just yeah, he acting when he goes totally mental is on point - think Kubota's Light Yagami level cos it was close to it! - and it just felt so good (we all know I'm messed up and enjoy the evil character scenes so much more xD). I also love Jaibo's death scene, the way the blood just completely goes into his face rather than towards the audience xD Which other death scenes were great... Zera's demise and ultimate death was great obvious xD Duff's death was both great but sad cos Tamiya was forced to kill him. Tamiya's almost death, then epic return, then fight scene, then ultimate death was great too! OMG I just remembered! Niko's eye loss scene was actually cringed worthy and had me a little 'am I queazy?' moment! IkeP's was too short and not bloody enough but the way he landed and stayed dead was great xD I kept my eye on him to see if he'd move or fidget xD like a true actor, he didn't ^_^ There's a scene right at the end when all the dead bodies come back to like as almost like robots and while Zera is going crazy their dance (from the beginning of the show) is really messed up and wrong, almost like a robot overloading, and I think IkeP did amazing, his legs were wobbling about and everything so it added extra messed up-ness and the way everyone fell at the end was again awesome! The ending song, omg it was so beautiful (even though it was depressing as FUCK), it got me crying a little <3 Like I said earlier: This version is SO much better than the 2013 version, but that could be because I knew nothing about Litche when I watched the 2013 and while it had a bunch of amazing actors, I don't like them the same level I like IkeP, but having said that IkeP was the only actor I knew so it's interesting that I'd like this one more... BUT I have to say, making it into a musical? Best. Decision. Ever! The dances were amazing, the songs were amazing, the music was phenominal! It was SO good! The only negatives is, there's three extra dancers that just leark the entire play and it just felt like they weren't needed at all. The boys proved they could damn well dance so why were these three extra dancers needed? I know their main point was to be a sort of entertainment for us while the boys got changed and stuff but... they really weren't need. And my only other negative is, the FUCKING woman next to me fucking nodded her head the ENTIRE time and it was FUCKING distracting as FUCK! I almost held her head in place at one point! Fucking hell... And she was making the seat row bounce along with her! Fucking rage!!! But yes those two are the only negatives! OH and I wanted another hour of it. The strange this about LHC is that it was only even a one volume manga yet it got a spin off mini Anime series and two MAJOR plays with MAJOR actors in it! And it's like 'write some fucking more manga artist!' cos I seriously need fucking more of LHC!!!! I cannot cope! I need more information, more stories, more character development, more sexy moments, more... everything!! And omg now you have to hear about the aftermath event!! So I've already announced this EVERYWHERE but I 'met' Inaba Yu!!! YES, THE INABA YU!!! This is how it went down: So after the play ended, I went to my friends (we were all in different seats around the theater) and I noticed there were looking up Inaba Yu on wiki and I said 'Why you looking up Inaba Yu?' and they said 'you know him?' 'Yeah,I like him' 'Well he's here today' 'WHAT? SERIOUSLY?! HE'S HERE?! HE'S HERE?! HE'S HERE?' (I was yelling this in the lobby btw surrounded by all the audience) 'You like him?' 'I LOVE HIM!' 'Well do you wanna wait and see if he comes out? He probably hasn't left yet.' 'I don't wanna look like a stalker,' 'Well do you?' *nods* So we waited outside and low and behold he comes out ten minutes later with two friends. They start walking down the path from the theater and out the gates towards the main road, where we're waiting, and obviously not to make it obvious, I try and act like I'm just idolly waiting for someone so I happily swiny back and forth looking both ways, BUT as he walks past he looks at me and obviously I can't not stop looking! So he walks past and we wait like 30 seconds so he's quite a way away. Then my friend says 'lets go?' so we do. All I remember is, his hair was in a black beanie hat, he had these awful baggy dark green pants/jeans on and I think a white sports-type back. His friend, I remember, his like long bright blue hair up in a high ponytail. So I notice we're taking the same route back as him but we cross the road just out of convinience and I look sight of him, no biggie I was never gunna do anything about seeing him anyway, so I stopped looking for him. THEN at the main traffic lights about 10 minutes away from the theater, he is literally back on the same side of the road as me and about 6 people down the row from me. SO our eyes solidly meet again, but this time I don't wanna look creepy so I focus me complete attention on my friend (who happens to be to the side of me that is towards him) and I notice out of the corner of my eye that he looks back at me but obviously I'm focusing on my friend so it doesn't become weird! And the lights turn green and we loss him for good in the mass that is Shibuya at 9pm at night. And THAT is my story! So yes I met (SHHHH I did!!) Inaba Yu and we locked eyes solidly at least two times and he could either have thought I was a complete fan and stalker OR the fact that I'm white and wearing a BRIGHT red coat caught his attention xD I am hoping the latter xD And I know you're thinking 'but Alex you see actors ALL the time on stage! Nijiro was even 10 feet away from you a few days ago!' I'm sorry but it's completely different when they're within like 4 meters of you! AND look at you!! My friend did ask why I didn't talk to him and here is the logic that I have had for year: if he (or any actor I ever like and meet) finds out I'm a fan then the chances of me ever getting to date him are completely gone! And THAT is why I will never go to a handshake event! I am white as FUCK, you can bet you're ass they ain't ever gunna forget 'that white ass chick who told them she was a huge fan' of them! So I'd rather just forever look at them from a distance than even have them know I'm a fan - am I just weird as fuck or is there method to my madness? xD But that is my tale that is LITCHE HIKARI CLUB <3 and it was gorgeous and for the remaining two days it was on show I was just complaining (cos I'd already made plans) to my friends the entire time "We could be getting out tickets right now. We could be sitting in the theater right now. We could be watching it right now. Ah shit it's ended and I've missed it and it's all your fault cos you made plans with me" they were taking any of my shit and were just going 'yeah, yeah. We got no interest so keep complaining' xD And that is ALL! xD I didn't get IkeP's badge at the Gaccha nor did I get lucky and get a signed photoset ='[ --- Overall:: I fucking loved this! I ate it up, spat it out and ate it again! It was so good!!! This version is SO much better than the 2013 version!! I have to say, making it into a musical? Best. Decision. Ever! The dances, the songs, the music were ALL phenominal! It was SO good! IkeP's character <3 I originally thought he'd be Jaibo and tbh, I think he's suit the role perfectly, but he performed amazingly at Zua (I think that's how you pronounce his name) and he was so cute and his singing was great and omg his dancing was just WOW! <3 Zera's actor was just spot on and omg his freak out scene was beautiful! I wanted to see it again! But I had fucking plans 26th and 27th -_- so coudln't... GRRR!!! But my friends damn well heard me complaints xD Naturally I've already preordered the DVD xD
