The reason fashion designers and people who care about fashion trends can’t pull off grunge is because they’re scared to be ugly. They need want to be hot and fashionable at all times. They want to be casual and go against the norm but at the same time they need to be hot, they need get a good picture to post on Instagram. So you get this very watered down glamorous version of grunge that’s all about pre-ripped jeans and expensive flannels and fishnets paired with Doc Martens (which are no longer affordable) and a perfect winged eyeliner because you have to look perfect and hot and put together. You want to give off the air of not giving a shit but you don’t want to be ugly. They want to look edgy and gritty but how can you do that if you’re scared to be ugly?
#i'm sorry i won't shut up about this#but i just find the evolution of so called grunge fashion fascinating#it never even really existed and yet somehow it still managed to get gentrified#also there is some genuinely ugly grunge inspired runway fashion but it's also like designer fashion so it's still missing the point#i feel like a lot of runway fashion is ugly but in a very different way than normal clothes can be ugly#like grunge isn't even purposely ugly in the way punk was#punk was a statement - it was a fuck you to modern sensibilities - it was meant to shock#grunge was just not giving a shit#it wasn't purposely ugly it just was sometimes because functionality and affordability came before looks#also i don't think caring about fashion is necessarily a bad thing#there are some days where i do not care how i look so i just put on a warm sweatshirt and call it good#but other days i want to look cute i got a jean jacket because i think it's cute#i want to buy an army jacket because i think they're cute#but grunge is first and foremost about being practical not about being cute and trendy
