Fake It | Weasley Twins | CH1
Warnings | 18+ SMUT, mature themes, fake relationships, secret relationships, love, sex, drama, angst, fluff.
Summary // Fred Weasley has been set up to publicly date Y/N, London's best Quidditch Seeker in order to drum up some publicity. Y/N however has a different ginger man on her mind; George Weasley.
Tumblr media
He was giving you that look. not the look, that look - the one that told you to stop doing what you were doing. It wasn't often that you'd layer it on thick for the press, making sure that you're giggling as you press your hand to his chest. With each flash of a picture you make sure you're striking a different pose. It was hard work being a liar, but it was even harder work without the publicity you gained.
Your Publicist Cheryl or 'cherry' as she begged you to call her, had devised her own scheming plan to generate not only some amazing press for you, a well established quidditch player, but also some well-needed hype and sales for Fred Weasley's shop. After all, it's not every day that London's best quidditch player was dating Infamous Fred Weasley, Gryffindor Star beater and all-in-all stellar man. The plan had been well and truly in action for just over four months, With Fred the main face of the shared brand with his brother George, it felt like the best option according to Cherry.
You were leaning into Fred, answering press questions about the latest win, how you were feeling about the upcoming game and, of course the all too regularly asked update on the relationship. You were 'very happy with a man like Fred', he was smiling down at you, gushing sappily "She may be the best Seeker in the game, but my god is she a keeper." The line made you sick to your stomach, When Cherry had pitched it to you both, you were groaning in disgust, but as she pulled the lollipop from her bright red lips with a pop, staring at you with raised eyebrows, you knew it had to be done.
As the interview began to wrap up, you thanked the photographers and journalists, grabbing Fred's hand and interlocking your fingers with a beaming smile, you made sure the cameras could see, after all the last issue of the Daily Prophet branded it as a 'winning smile'. You were escorted away from the press, once out of sight from them, your hand dropped from Fred's grip. "Well done for not making that so not obviously fake." you quipped at him, going to pull your coat on and check your phone for any messages. He laughed, imitating your voice, "Oh, Fred, you're so handsome, won't you just kiss me right now?" You scoffed, throwing your bag over your shoulder. Your phone had three messages when the screen had lit up, your stomach feeling like it had butterflies when you noticed the name.
>> Do I get to see my beautiful girl later?
>> I got your favourite for dinner.
>> I miss your lips already
You felt like the luckiest girl alive in his presence, he made you feel like a princess - a queen even, with every night you spent with him. It all started at Hogwarts for you two, after all, It's not often you get to see the best Slytherin seeker and the Gryffindor star beater together. It really wasn't often because you'd been hiding your relationship for that long. He taught you quidditch skills that got you to where you are today during late, late night practices, often ending with makeout sessions on the grass as you straddled his hips, giggling into the bitter Scottish air.
You fell in love with George Weasley as a teenager, and for 6 years you had kept your relationship a well-guarded secret. Even through the war, you kissed each other goodbye, praying that it was only a see you later. You knew that one day you would marry the gorgeous man you loved so dearly. You tried to persuade Cherry, who had and still has no clue about your true relationship status, for it to be George you had a public relationship with, but she quickly shut the idea down because George was 'too quiet'.
<< I miss you so much Georgie… heading back to the shop with fred now
<< btw I'm staying over tonight, I won't suffer another night without kisses :'((
>> Just kisses? ;)
<< Shut up.
<< I love you xx
>> I Love you too, babygirl xx
>> Daddy can't wait to see you <3
George stood lazily, arms draped over the balcony as he was smiling down at his phone like a muppet. He was so head over heels with you that he wasn't sure what to do with himself. George wasn't mad that you had to fake date his twin, after all, he'd rather it be Fred than some random quidditch man, or worst of all, Krum. He knew and recognised how important it was to your career plus, what good businessman turns down the opportunity to rake in some sales? It hurt to read the papers sometimes, seeing how much attention you both got together, a part of him wished it was he who got to show you off.
When you entered the shop, you caught George's eyes immediately, a bashful smile spread across your face, immediately feeling like a schoolgirl again in his presence. Fred sulked off to his office, leaving you to browse the shop until your driver arrived to take you to team practice. You were browsing the upper back wall of products when you felt his stare on you, he was meters away from you and you ached to draw him in for a kiss. You reached out to him, making the grabby hands that he couldn't resist, he checked over his shoulder, seeing nobody, before waking over to you, he pulled you into a quick and needy kiss by your neck, his other hand finding your hip.
"I'll be home after practice," you mumbled between kisses. It was common for you to travel to his via floo, arriving at the place you truly called home, leaving a vacant and empty flat behind. He shook his head, the tip of his nose brushing against yours. "Too long to wait," he laughed softly, his lips pressing to yours again, you were just about to deepen the kiss when you heard Cherry yell out, "Y/N let's go or you'll be late for practice!" You sighed, leaving your boyfriend behind, fingertips being the last thing to separate as you walked away, leaving him dumbfounded.
Practicing with your team was always a long, tough grind, your captain worked you hard and she knew it was all for the best, she was due soon to step down from her duty as captain, leaving the team in your hands, so you felt like you were learning double constantly. The warm water running down your skin made you crave George's touch even more, pushing the thought of Fred's hand on your hip out of your mind completely, you simply couldn't wait.
When you arrived home, George, as promised had your favourite dinner ready for you. He was an amazing chef, using muggle techniques and tools to help create the perfect dishes without the need for magic. You shrugged off your jacket and bag, relaxing into the dining table chair as George brought out your bowl, his hands were massaging your shoulders as you ate, "Aren't you gonna eat, Georgie?" you questioned him, he smirked, "I've been waiting for you to get home so I could have my favourite." George was on his knees, hands reaching up to pull down your leggings, you lifted your hips up, allowing him to drag the material down each of your legs, hooking them over his shoulders,
You knew exactly what he was doing, your hands found his hair and he tutted, breath fanning over your pussy as he looked up at you. "I made your favourite for you, Princess, You always liked it when we eat together." His tongue darted out to lick over your covered slit, feeling you already wet through your underwear, he hummed in appreciation, his teeth pulling the material to the side before attaching his lips to your clit.
Every time he hummed against you, it made you shake, the task of eating dinner becoming more and more strenuous, as you struggled to swallow down the food while he was pulling such sinful moans from you. George's skilled tongue was fucking your cunt, swallowing everything he could like it was the last meal he'd ever eat, and godric did he think you tasted divine, his thumb came up to circle your clit slowly, bringing you closer and closer to the ege.
Thing is with George, he doesn't stop till he's got what he wanted. "Finish your dinner, baby," he smirked, a long finger slowly teasing your entrance, "I'm not finished until you are too." he was a determined man, by your second orgasm you could hardly hold up your fork, but nevertheless you soldiered on, managing to swallow the last piece just before number three hit, your legs were shaking and you were moaning incoherent sentences. That was possibly the best meal of your life, your weak legs could hardly hold you up when you tried to stand.
George pulled you up into his arms, carrying you to the bed where he found your favourite shirt of his, helping you change into it, he left to make you a cup of tea, bringing it into the bedroom for you. sitting contently beside each other.
George's phone buzzed on the side, he read the message from fred. Laughing before showing it to you, the irony all too funny for him to resist.
>> George, if only you had to do this… Fancy swapping places at the product launch on Saturday?
<< Love to, but I'm not sure that's how the whole twin thing works.
>> With an ass like hers, I don't mind it too much… shame, she seems like your type.
The last text from him made george both laugh and be angry at him sexualising his girl. You laugh, pressing a soft kiss to your boyfriend’s jaw before taking a sip of your tea, "He doesn't know George."
He hums a little bit before typing a reply.
<< It really is a shame, she does have a nice ass.
You scoff, rolling your eyes - Men.

Pairing: Wilford Warfstache x Reader
Genre: Fluff. Like so god damn fluffy. The fluffiest thing this angst-lover will ever write. TOOTH ROTTING- okay you get the point.
Word Count: 1,710

Anonymous Request: If you have time, could you please do 10, 17, and 20 with either Wilford or Yancy (and they/them pronouns)? 🥺👉🏼👈🏼 I love your writing btw ❤️
Authors Note: I think it’s safe to say I’m out of the ficlet mindset after this one. I got an idea and got waaay carried away but hopefully no one minds!  Maybe a bit out of character? I’m not completely sure.

[Image Description: A gif of Wilford Warfstache from the short “Warfstache Interviews Markipler” screwing with his hair. End Description.]
The sun wasn’t even up yet, that was your biggest concern. Not that there could be some kind of emergency but that someone had the audacity to knock on your door before the sun was even up. You swung the door open to see Wilford standing there, looking much more casual than usual and grinning the moment he saw you. “Good morning, sunshine! Ready to go?”
You sighed and let your defenses down. “To go?”
“Yes, to go! To go to the big thing in Chicago!”
“Yeah I remember that, I thought we were leaving at six thirty.”
“It is six thirty.” He said, glancing down at his watch to check.
You stared at him for a moment in sleepy confusion before it finally hit you. “You meant six in the morning??”
“Well of course I meant the morning, can you imagine the traffic that time of day?” He chuckled at the thought and let himself inside. “Besides, the network made it very clear I can’t miss this. Best not to take chances.”
“...You’re lucky you’re cute.” You grumbled, fighting back a yawn as you left to get dressed and grab the bag you packed the night before.
You’d been dating Wil for somewhere close to two years at this point, and you’d been friends for longer than that, and you still never had any idea what to expect from him. There was always a new adventure or shenanigans for him to pull you into, just waiting around the corner. This was one of those times.
When you came back downstairs he took your bag, and your hands in his once it was securely over his shoulder. “Come on, cheer up! I know you took the week off so I made sure this would be worthwhile, planned some stops, made sure we had plenty of time.”
You stopped to lock up your apartment before you two started walking downstairs. “What kind of stops?”
“Sweetheart, you are just gonna have to wait and see.” He told you with a wink.
MONDAY
If Wil hadn’t stopped at a gas station, you probably wouldn’t have been able to keep yourself awake at the start of the drive, but thankfully you took the opportunity to get yourself some caffeine and something for you both to eat. After that it was pretty fun, with music blasting and the windows cracked. Every half hour or so one of you would turn the music down and get into another conversation. You had both been so busy the past few months that you had plenty to talk about. Though, the entire time he made a point to keep a folded up piece of paper out of your reach.
The first detour was through the Las Vegas strip, the only stop being a cozy barbecue place off of an exit. But it was fun to see the grand casinos and attractions nonetheless.
“Okay, this is amazing,” You said, pointing to what was left of your sandwich. “What’s the story behind this place?”
“I’ve actually never been here before, just saw it had four and a half stars.” In the middle of his explanation, he swiped a fry off your plate. “I actually haven’t stayed in Vegas since before all the smart...google...haberdashery.”
You stopped halfway to taking a drink, biting back a smile. “Haberdashery?”
He smiled back, shaking his head at you. “Don’t start.”
“So you really planned this out then, huh?”
“Yeah! I have a whole list of places we’re stopping. Did you expect anything less from me?”
“I probably shouldn’t answer that.” You teased. He gasped in mock offense before both of you burst out laughing.
“Fair enough.”
Once you got back on the road it was an extremely long eight hours, at least in the second half after another gas station stop. Your legs were cramped up and the music was getting a bit tedious and had to be turned down. Wilford assured you it was the longest stretch in the whole trip, but even he was tired by the time you guys got to stop in a small Chinese restaurant on the border of Colorado.  “I should’ve picked a closer hotel.” He mumbled through a yawn, waiting somewhat impatiently on the ‘meal for two’ special. “I really didn’t think it’d be this late.”
“How far is it?” You asked, spinning your straw in your glass.
“‘Nother two hours, I think.”
You nodded, deciding to step in. “You could barely keep your eyes open when we pulled in, you should let me drive.”
“You’re probably right...” He seemed hesitant, but neither one of you wanted this to end in a car crash. “But don’t look at the list.”
“I won’t, I won’t. Jeez”
The next two hours were nice, as it was dark now and there were hardly any cars. It didn’t take more than a few minutes for Wilford to doze off in the passenger seat after he put in the next address and you played an audiobook at a low volume to keep yourself focused. Finally the GPS buzzed; “Your destination is on the left.”
You pulled into the lot of Riverwalk inn and nudged your partner’s shoulder until he finally started to stir. “Hey, c’mon we’re here.”
TUESDAY
You heard an alarm start going off on the other side of the bed and let out a groan, pulling a pillow over your head. “What time is it?”
“It’s eight, get up and get dressed and I’ll find someplace to eat.” And with that Wilford was up and out of bed, no problems.
You on the other hand... “We can’t even sleep in a little bit?”
“Not unless you want to start crossing places off the list, my dear.” He started going through his things to look for something new to wear. “We still have to make it there by Friday...for the thing.”
You grumbled some more, finally dragging yourself out of bed after hearing a couple promises of fresh coffee. “Wilford Warfstache, this ‘thing’ better be the best thing that’ll ever happen to you.”
“I already know it will be!” He said in a sing-song voice as you grabbed your bag and vanished into the bathroom.
“What’s the plan for today anyway?” You called out.
“Nothing much, a couple breaks here and there but it’ll take most of the day to get to-” You heard him cut himself off, “to...the next place. But things’ll get good tomorrow, I promise.”
And when you drove into Oklahoma city that night, you pondered all the possibilities.
WEDNESDAY
It was much easier to get up early, mostly out of excitement. After you two stopped at a random chain restaurant to get something for breakfast, you pushed for answers again. “Come on, you have to tell me now that we’re here.”
“Well, actually I couldn’t decide.”He tore his napkin in two and pull a pen out of what seemed to be thin air. You were about to ask if he even realized he did that, as he usually didn’t, but he held both his now-paper-filled hands out. “So, you pick. Left or right, whatever the paper says is what we’ll do.”
“Okay...left.”
He tossed the other paper over his shoulder and read what yours said. “Ooh good choice.” You tried to lean over the table to see it but he closed his hand quickly, leaning closer to you. “Now, Y/n, if I didn’t know any better I’d think you want to kiss me.”
“I’ll kiss you if you tell me where we’re going.”
He laughed at you and slipped out of the booth without hesitation. “Nope! Not ruining the surprise.”
He was very insistent that it didn’t happen, even convincing you to close your eyes once you were close. He guided you out of the car, and finally let you open your eyes. You looked up at the big green sign.
“OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden.”
“Oh my- are you serious?” You had to stop yourself from jumping up in excitement, and grabbed his hand to pull him inside.
You were still beaming hours after you two left, showing him how all the photos turned out over dinner in Kansas City.
THURSDAY
The audiobook had hit a lull, and you were too sick of pop music to switch it. Wilford was much more quiet than usual, so you kept to yourself for a while after lunch, eventually nodding off for a good half-hour.
“We made it!” Your boyfriend cheered, shutting off the car as you sat up straight. “Oh, sorry, I didn’t even realize.”
“Nah it’s fine. We’re here?”
“Yep! We are officially, finally in Chicago. Ready to stretch your legs?”
You bought some ice cream from a Dessert Dealer before driving down to the architecture center to walk around, even deciding to catch a movie before you checked into the hotel.
“This was the best. week. ever!” You exclaimed, flopping onto the bed.
Wil chuckled and laid down beside you. “It’s not over yet.”
“Well you said no detours planned on the way back, and you’ll be busy with the thing tomorrow, so...safe to say we can call it.” You shrugged, flipping onto your stomach and laying your head on your arms. “What is it anyway? A speech? Big grand opening?”
He didn’t answer you at first, contemplating the answer. “Truth be told...” He started. “The network has no idea I’m here. I just wanted to surprise you with all of this. Because...”
“Because?”
He put up a finger, staring down at his watch until-
FRIDAY
“Because, happy anniversary.” He said with a grin,
You had to pause, doing the math in your head, before sitting up straight. “That is...the sweetest thing anybody’s ever done for me. God, I love you.”
He pulled you into a hug before you started tearing up. “I love you too...In fact I didn’t think it was possible to love someone so much.”
“Me either,” You admitted, pulling back to wipe your face with your sleeve. “Happy anniversary, Wil.”
Little did you know that despite the list being complete, there was still one more surprise in store.
You know, considering the ‘top secret list’ you couldn’t look at was just to keep your attention away from the tiny black box in his suitcase?

Apparently Niall is doing ever possible promo? Interviewing with every possible person? Complete news to me!! Hit me with those links if you would because this week I think we got like 1 new interview 😂 so I must have missed some stuff!
I…don’t know where to start.
I think it is so completely unfair to compare Harry and Niall’s promo strategies. If you are to compare them, you HAVE to acknowledge that they are NOT, and have never BEEN on the same level. You have to acknowledge that Harry retained MAJORITY of 1D fans and from day 1 who are now Harries or whatever, he was branded with the “Justin Timberlake of 1D” which has given him so much clout and buzz around his name. Niall has more or less had to work from the ground up while Harry has been able to be selective about his promo from the very start because of said clout and buzz. He works hard, sure, but you can’t dismiss that there is so much he didn’t have to do that Niall HAS to do in order to keep furthering his career.
If Niall wants to define his success with numbers, that’s on him? That’s his choice? Who is anyone to tell him he shouldn’t do that? Who is anyone to tell him he should do what works for his ex-bandmate when success is relative. He has said on many occasions that he is competitive with HIMSELF and he wants to outdo what HE did, not what anyone else did. Slow Hands got a number 1 on the radio and that’s what he wants.
The promo he did for Slow Hands allowed him to be more selective this time around and he HAS been selective this time around. His promo is VERY Standard Pop Artist promo strategy. Look at Selena’s route a few weeks later - the exact same. He did insightful interviews with Jojo, Ryan, Zach, Tom, Z100, Elvis. He did random bits and pieces of radio promo (that btw - Harry also did some of). He did digital content that everyone and their mother does cause it’s popular.
There is such a Harry bias in that post and it’s unfair. It’s unfair to sit and compare without a) acknowledging they’re on different levels, b) acknowledging your own bias and preference. Which is fine! It’s fine if you prefer Harry over Niall! No one is forcing you to like Niall! I agree that the constant call to stream can be annoying, I get it, and I’ve talked about it before. But also acknowledge that all these things that he’s doing aren’t necessarily for hardcore stans already doing these things? They’re for the general public who have become a core fanbase for him? NTMY has been steadily rising, the way Slow Hands did. And this isn’t an attack on Harry! It’s just the way it is!
There is a systematic and fundamental difference between Harry and Niall’s solo careers and if you’re gonna compare their promo strategies, you need to acknowledge that there is a HUGE difference between them and if Niall does the very select, exclusive interviews, he will not succeed to the level that Harry has. Harry has a privilege now that he had to suffer to get during the band but he has it. Niall doesn’t.
All the artists in the world can apparently promo their music, but when Niall does it (with some hiccups? with somethings that don’t make sense? whatever) it’s apparently desperate, unnecessary, and he should reevaluate his entire career strategy cause he won’t be a long term successful artist.
If you’re so annoyed by Niall and his promo…..just don’t pay attention to him and pay attention to the select elite highly exclusive promo Harry does??? You cannot compare two people in two different levels!!!

Feeling Spirited
the one where it's a throwback to when Harry and Y/N were just friends and Y/N's drink helps her forget
A/N:  A Continuation of LITP (masterlist here) TW: alcohol
Tumblr media
The sky was dark. Had been for weeks now, the clouds clustering together to formulate something thicker than the water making up their essence. A fog was settling, clouding up your thoughts or ability to rationalize any of your actions. Acting with blind impulsiveness didn’t align with the rest of your usual characteristics; even your wildest nights generally took prior planning, but bottles had been a source of solace against the bitterness of confusion, the anxiety of life.
It hadn’t been an issue, not really, because you knew how to handle yourself when drunk, and knew the reaches of your limitations with alcohol. But trouble started brewing when your 5:30 pm started when everyone else began their 9:30 am. And when you thought you were only going for one more drink, but ended up with four glasses in your sink.
The drinks in the morning were simply to calm your nerves, settle the anxiety bubbling in your lungs. And the one at lunch was to offset the chance you would freak out in the middle of your presentation, and the second was because the restaurant offered you a free one.
Was only polite to accept.
It had spiraled into drinks at sporadic times throughout the day, never so many as to make you stumble while walking back to your desk, but certainly enough to only need one or two more when you went home, to slip over the edge. Even looking at a bottle seemed to get your mind in a safe place.
Nestled between the space of your wall and the bedroom bookcase, was a plastic bottle of Smirnoff, half-empty and pitifully groaning as it was tugged out. The books watched silently, probably feeling much superior because they were considered a more refined pastime.
The vodka didn’t seem to give a fuck.
You winced considerably when it popped out of its hiding spot, the familiar panic gripping your bones that you were a teenager again. Hiding alcohol from parents, keeping it in safe spots so any stranger’s eyes would only spot a pristine home, a girl who respected cleanliness and experienced minimal, if any, breakdowns.
The truth was always nestled somewhere deeper, whether it was beneath clothing in drawers, behind bookshelves, in the back of your bathroom cabinet, or underneath your bed. The truth usually tasted like shit, too.
That you were in your 20s and continuing the practice of secret drinking, of playing pretend to appease some authority that wouldn’t give a damn, now that your license said you were of age - it both amused and disgusted you. A restricted sense of adulthood, surely, a lack of freedom to openly be the drunken mess you felt inside. Perhaps it was acceptable to turn a blind eye to it in adolescence, but when you had become a regular at the liquor store, it felt more like a ruse.
Suppose it replaced your blood, you wondered, holding your arm up to the lamplight and inspecting the hint of veins against your skin. Suppose it congealed in the veins, a substrate for your demons to thrive on. Perhaps it could be better than the life of intangible anxiety that crept against each wall, became every shadow, lurked in everyone’s unsuspecting glance.
The nerves were rattling in your teeth, you could feel the invisible bugs of anxiety nipping at your chest and legs. If this was what it took to become calm, maybe it wasn’t so bad. Only a few drinks, more people probably did it than they would confess to.
“It was another shit work day,” you divulged to your cactus, padding back from the bedroom, to the living room, only to shlump against the couch. The cactus only watched, perhaps having come to the conclusion its advice would never be properly considered and it was only a waste of breath. Or photosynthesis. You weren’t sure on the particulars of horticultural language.
“I can’t scratch off how fuckin’ lonely everything feels,” you continued, mindlessly itching at your legs, not needing to be prompted by anything in particular.
Your apartment felt hollow, exasperated by the emptiness in both mind and soul. Curling up on the couch with some bottle had become a ritual, of sorts, yet you weren’t sure what good could come of it.
A shrine of glass and plastic bottles decorated the spaces above the kitchen cabinets, around the corner from where you were presently cuddled. Each one tallied a few night’s of shame, but cumulatively you supposed it was a nice Pinterest trick. Show the nonexistent guests how bougie you were, buying cheap whiskey and vodka. Make them think you had parties all the time, when they were only parties of one.
Your glass was ready, waiting patiently on the table, as you filled it to the brim with the nasty clear liquid.
“I think you’re my true love,” you cocked your head at the glass, taking it in for all its perks and limitations. Regardless, it was still there with you. All that mattered, to an extent.
You couldn’t really stand the shit, had to stick your tongue out like a fucking cat after each shot to bear the taste down your throat. But drinking wasn’t particularly for enjoyment, not these days. It was like a medicine to keep yourself calm; it felt like your whole life revolved around it, because to an extent, it did. But your sanity was on the brink of collapsing, and you were determined to do whatever you could to keep yourself calm.
It was at that moment, with your eyes squished shut and your tongue smacking against the roof of your mouth to distract from the sensation, that your phone buzzed. It was also on the table, next to the stack of marbled coasters and the multitude of TV remotes (why did services give you three remotes for one machine, you still didn’t understand).
I’ve missed you. Wanna come out tonight? x.
Harry and his mates, the group you loved and hated equally, would gather for beers at the Ale Tavern each Thursday evening, a letting-off-steam of sorts before the glorious Friday blessed their workload. Harry had met them through various means, photoshoots, interviews, or just networking events, and had hodge-podged the group together so you two would have a social setting to hang out when he was in town.
Which was, you reminded yourself, mostly because your friends list was lacking at the moment. Most of them, dear to your heart, had received promotions or were traveling around the world for the majority of their work, while you waited at home for nothing to happen. And for nothing to happen again. And maybe once more, for the heck of it.
Some of the group’s members, the ones teetering on the outskirts like leeches, looking for a better opportunity, often treated you like you were off, a bit. A screw loose in the mind, an instability in your essence.
When words came out of your mouth, their eyes would instinctively widen, as if your breath was mixed with unregulated insanity and electric nonsense, so you’d typically keep to yourself. Was the only way to survive the brutal bar nights, with small talk and curious glances at your best friend, who would spend the whole night dodging questions and smiling for photos.
Harry found your silence weird, every time, since you were often the life of the party within his other social groups. You felt his other pals were more genuine, allowing you to exist unapologetically. Plus, small talk was practically banned at those hang-outs, which was another reason you felt you got along well with them.
With your Ale Tavern group, though, Harry had the tendency to nudge you gently, when you were in the corner of the booth stirring a Long Island, and ask you what was wrong. Which would, in turn, increase your unwillingness to be engage with more people -- because why were you well-known for being strange, why couldn’t you simply be a dilution of yourself and pass as OK?
Another buzz, another text.
You poured another shot.
I’m proud of you btw, you’re doing really well. x. :)
Another buzz, another text.
You winced before knocking the shot back, your tongue shooting out on instinct after.
Speaking of, should I come over? If you don’t want to be around drinks…
Giggling to yourself at the unfortunate timing, you swayed a bit on your couch and repositioned your legs to tuck under your ass. One of the green blankets draped over the couch fell to the floor during your transition, and your eyes trained on that spot, waiting to see if it returned.
It didn’t. Gravity was a fucker, only headed one way.
Harry was sweet to care, truly, but if he saw you in this state you knew how it would go. The disappointment would swell in his eyes, he would gently try to pry the bottle out of your hands. Thinking about the situation, even as a possibility, made your fingers curl against the plastic a bit more stubbornly.
“It’s too late, I’m nothin to be proud of,” you informed your phone, frowning as you attempted to scroll up further in your texts with him. There was nothing, though, but it didn’t register until it buzzed once more, and your scrolling resulted in a new text appearing.
I’m just gonna come over. Is that okay? xx.
“Okie dokie,” you mumbled, poking each letter with your index finger until the message was spelled. You sent it.
The cactus groaned in the back, whispering to the lamp, “He is going to be so fucking pissed when he sees her like this.”
Harry was the one who consistently found you passed out at the bar a few streets away from your home. The bartender had found your phone the first time, when Harry was calling (and the ringtone was an obnoxious version of What Makes You Beautiful that you had stumbled upon once, not an important detail but once that made him blush at the time) and had informed Harry that his friend would probably need help leaving, given your state. His number became a regular one to call.
So Harry would help you home, rub over your face gently with a washcloth in a hearty attempt to get off your makeup, and hold your hair back when you came to and felt the drinks for a second time.
Quiet pity and a particular sort of confused hurt would reflect in his eyes, when you had the guts and stability to look at them. He was usually under the impression you were staying home, getting over a cold, busy with work, etc. - and that was why you weren’t able to make it to some mutual friend’s birthday party. After all, that was what you had told him, anyway.
Neither you nor Harry spoke about those nights, when it was the morning after, or even any night after.
You had sent him a text, weeks ago, after guilt had rusted away the stubbornness in your bones. You informed him you were going to try and stay sober for a bit, not liking the way it had made you feel. He was happy about it, it seemed, because the worry was absent from his smile the next time you ran into each other. His hug was a bit tighter, but then again, that was just Harry being Harry.
Your soberness lasted four days. Then you were back, standing in front of the cabinet, with that pathetic acceptance you loathed about yourself. How one aspect of your soul could so resiliently rule the rest, made no sense. You didn’t know how to fight it, though, and so the glasses and bottles came out once more.
You gave your cactus the most awful side-eye you could muster, before extending yourself fully out on the couch. Your fingertips felt like they were touching clouds, clouds intermingled with the deep current of black waters, which meant you had drunk a bit more than you had meant to. An accident, surely, but it didn’t stop you from rolling over on your side (and almost off the couch), huffing at the bottle.
It glugged like a drunk whale trying to drown, pouring out another shot.
Someone was stroking your hair. It felt nice, the rhythm of their fingertips against the curls, stopping at the edges of your forehead, before moving back and gently starting again. The motion was kept on one spot of your head, as well, which was a personal favorite of yours. The movement throughout the whole head was just craziness. Everything had a greater chance of messing up when it came to full-head-hair-strokes. And only one person had heard that drunken rant before (except for your cactus, but that usually kept to itself about your rants. As most cacti do.)
“Yeh up?” someone mumbled, throat thick. They sounded half-asleep, and their fingers slowed as they waited for an answer.
Your head was still smashed against a wave of Smirnoff, too blurred to put two and two together and recognize the need for a response. Anyway, you didn’t appreciate the fingers stopping, so you grunted softly to signal that.
They didn’t continue, this person seemed really fucking set on getting you speaking. Your mouth felt glued, in a thicker, denser sense of the word. Your tongue felt perfectly content resting against the back of your teeth, your lips staying shut.
It was when you became steadily more aware of your surroundings, how it wasn’t a pillow under your head but denim, smooshed against your cheek. How your head was sloped up from the rest of your body, how a blanket was tucked around your person and even your toes were covered by the tassles on the end. You were on someone’s lap, surely, and in the depths of your mind you wondered, with a slight giggle, how scandalous a drunken night alone, in the comforts of your home, could get?
“Who’s asking?” you managed to croak, your fingers reaching outwards from the confines of the cozy blanket, seeking the bottle you knew would’ve been hidden at this point. The question was pointless, you knew him by his cologne. Hell, you knew him from how he stroked your hair, for Christ’s sake.
It was the improbable sense in your gut that hoped it was someone like Chris Evans who had you cuddled up against them. Maybe he was in the midst of robbing your home (Marvel might’ve gone through budget cuts, it happened to the best) before stumbling across your sleeping body. Maybe he found your Chinese takeout, too, because you were awful at remembering to eat leftovers. Although it would be disturbing on most levels of sanity, you could find the loveliness in the situation.
If it were Chris Evans, that is.
“Harry. ‘Ve got long hair, ‘m yeh best friend. Yeh told me I could come ove’’,” Harry teased quietly. It was sort of unsettling, how humor was in the words but his actual voice was void of emotion. He was worried.
You were quiet, unsure if this was a situation in which Harry would take over the conversation if you stayed silent long enough. There weren’t many words you had to say, anyway, your present situation must have been clear enough when he walked in. Plus, his knee was nice to rest your head against. Speaking would just lead to eventual motion, which was already turning your stomach at the thought.
The two of you listened to the distant hum of your freezer kicking into place from the kitchen, the soft rattling of ice cubes tumbling into the tray you had set out. Harry seemed content on waiting for a response, of any type, or maybe to see if you fell asleep. It was entirely possible this entire conversation had happened earlier since Harry’s arrival, and you had passed out again.
If you were to move your head, you felt, something really unfortunate would happen. Like vomiting. Or the world ending. Or having to look Harry in the eyes.
His fingers stopped fully, just resting against your cheek. They were embers, most definitely, and you wondered if you could start a trend for Harry Styles Cheek Burns. Probably wouldn’t catch on. Bit of a health hazard, perhaps. It was difficult to know for sure, because once a thought formulated in your mind it seemed to expand outwards into the galaxy, becoming so diffused in the stars you weren’t able to piece it back together again.
“What’s been goin’ on, Y/N?”
His eyes were on the back of your neck, trailing up to your cheek. It wasn’t unsettling, how you could feel his gaze with your mind – or, at least, it didn’t feel so, at that moment, with him. It was just natural, how you understood him.
He sounded tired. He sounded like he had been working on asking, for a while, and the slight strangled noise that twisted the softness of his voice signaled that you had really fucked up. This wasn’t a joke, anymore, it wasn’t for shits and giggles like it was when you would out-drink his Irish friends at the bar.
All Harry wanted was an answer, a few words so he could just know what to do. Alcohol was an issue with a few other friends, ranging from binge drinkers to alcoholics, and Harry was comfortable enough spending nights dry with them. Essentially, he was comfortable because they told him where their boundaries were, and he could navigate those easily.
Yours, on the other hand, were completely blank. How it felt, to watch you slip out of your daily self, into some shell that no one else seemed to notice, it drove him crazy. How was he supposed to ask why his best friend was leaving, how he could stop it?
There was no way Harry could order you to quit drinking. To be honest, he didn’t know if it was just alcohol, and some subconscious level of his mind was on alert for that phone-call. Another one, with you shlumped in some dim-lit bar with seedy men clinging on the walls with tongues snaking out, sniffing the vulnerability in the air. Or an even worse phone call.
Shudders erupted from the base of his neck, down to his spine. He didn’t even want to think about it.
He didn’t know how to save someone who didn’t want to be saved. Someone who wouldn’t even open up to him about it. He wasn’t sure how to respond with you not talking to him about it. You two were best friends, he told you things his own mother didn’t know about. What could be so bad, you couldn’t tell him?
Entering your home to find you, initially unresponsive, on the couch with a hand dangled against the carpet, a bottle clutched in your fingertips, was nothing short of terrifying. His heart had plummeted through his stomach, his chest felt tight and he wondered, with the worst case scenario always coming first, if you were alive.
“Fuck, fuck, shit, fuck. C’mon Y/N...this isn’t funny, c’mon wake the fuck up - oh my god, c’mon don’t leave me here, wake up.”
Helplessness could only sharpen its hold on his throat with time, his voice growing steadily higher-pitched, when he didn’t know what had happened. After gently (and then roughly) shaking your shoulders, and finding that you weren’t unconscious but simply napping (“I thought yeh were dead, Jesus Y/N, don’t do that again”) and he had chuckled a bit when your eyebrows came together, not quite stirring enough to register his panic, and you had dipped again in the haze of dreams.
The smile on his face seemed maddening, the swelling tears in his vision seeming more appropriate for the situation, but he supposed it was simply a reaction to overwhelming ‘what the fuck’ feelings. This wasn’t one of your stupid jokes, the type where he would laugh without realizing because you had laughed at yourself, which just triggered him to laugh more and – no, this was something beyond the scope of seriousness that he knew how to deal with.
You were fine. You were fine. You were okay. It was just a little too much to drink, the coldness of your hands was just normal. You were fine.
He had lowered himself onto the couch, moving your head to rest on his lap, so his fingertips could feel your pulse as he stroked your hair with the other. Authorities weren’t needed, he had felt, you were just napping. (He had still texted his family doctor, though, just to make sure.)
“Just had a drink o’ two,” you whispered, staring at the wall.
He hummed, his fingers resuming the strokes against your cheek. Harry could tell it calmed you down, how your breath evened out and your eyebrows relaxed. Even as you were coming out of the safe space of intoxicated padding, even when the glimmer of soberness clung to your eyes, he needed to feel you physically there.
His heart hadn’t stopped feeling tight.
“Wanna tell me why?”
“I don’t know.”
The words left you in short gasps, as your fingers curled against the denim of his jeans. Your eyes stayed open, glazed over slightly, somewhat with tears and somewhat with that emptiness that had been ripping you apart lately. How was something so non-existent so prevalent in your existence? And why was it that all you had nowadays, was a bunch of ‘how’s and not much else?
Harry nodded slowly, sniffling quietly. Maybe you didn’t know the words, you couldn’t explain what you were feeling. Maybe he was beginning to understand that he couldn’t understand. That the spaces of your world were compressing in so many angles, it was dizzying the amount, the walls were closing and you were the only one in the room. He couldn’t enter it, he couldn’t pull you out.
“Do yeh need to throw up?”
The familiarity in the question, it pulled from his lips without hesitation or urgency. He was used to this, you realized, guilt flooding your senses and kicking some of the haze away. Harry’s nights with you were, nowadays, commonly associated with toilets and toothbrushes, with him gently prying a bottle out of your hand and listening to your rambles that mainly consisted of the various alcohol brands you could think of.
You nodded, knowing the nausea hadn’t gripped your eyes shut yet, but it would soon.
“’Kay,” he sighed, raising his arms so you could scoot out, “let’s go on, then.”
Once more, it felt too much like a routine. Like a horror movie where you were lost as to how you got here - in a schedule that felt both so normal and incredibly wrong.
He shouldn’t have to do this, he shouldn’t have to be here.
It was all you could think of, a looped tape in your mind, with his broad hands carefully holding onto your hips to help you maintain your balance. (You had started refusing to be carried to the bathroom, after Harry hadn’t made it in time. Wasn’t one of your better nights, that was for sure.)
Harry had even gotten in the loose habit of braiding your hair as you were bent over the toilet, your legs immediately going around and him sitting close behind. It was reminiscent of those massage trains girls used to do at sleepovers, but more ‘adult’ and trashy.
“C’mon, feel like that one was the last?...No, ‘kay, that’s fine, yeh just gotta get it all out, hm?” Once your hair was plaited, his hands would softly rub against your back until you nodded, signaling it was over for the night. He would normally be quiet for it all, having spent the night clubbing with you and attempting to switch out your drinks with waters, but this time was different.
“I want yeh to do what makes yeh happiest.”
You had rested your cheek against the cool lid, not feeling the next wave of nausea. It seemed like you were in the clear, your head’s pounding had substantially lessened, but you didn’t move. Harry had more to say.
“And this, this isn’t it. You’re the best friend I could ask for, Y/N...I can’t watch yeh like this, anymore.”
You sniffled, nodding bleakly and with a shaky hand, you wiped underneath your eyes, reaching up blindly to pull at a few tissues to mop up the mess on your face. Harry’s hands drew to a still, before gently resting on your shoulder.
“Let’s go to bed, yeah? Talk ‘bout it in the mornin...yeh can call off work, and we can figure it out,” he promised. Harry made a mental note to email his therapist for some recommendations for alcohol abuse therapists, just for resource options.
When you had the courage to look behind you, the voice in your mind faintly recognizing you hadn’t looked at him directly that night, the first thing that caught your attention was the tear streaks down his reddened cheeks. His eyes seemed bigger than normal, looking at you cautiously.
Harry gave you an attempt at a smile, the wells only overspilling with the action. He gave a little shrug with his shoulders, as if saying ‘what can be done about it?’ before patting your shoulder twice.
Hastily wiping at his cheeks, Harry slowly rose to his feet, sniffling, all while you were still curled against the toilet. You watched him silently, the disgust that typically followed your night’s routine finally catching up and settling in your bones. If you could crawl out of your skin, you would’ve, no second thought.
Harry held out a hand for you to hold onto, carefully helping you up, waiting as you wearily brushed your teeth and gargled some Listerine, and led you over to your bedroom. No words were exchanged between either of you, but as the covers were pulled back, you pulled your arm out from Harry’s light grip, staring at him.
“You shouldn’t have to do this,” you shook your head, “I’m sorry I’m like this. You shouldn’t have to do this.”
Harry had moved over, settling in on his side of the bed, pushing one of the pillows over to your side (he only liked having one, for some reason). When you spoke though, he immediately started shaking his head.
“Stop it, won’t hear it. I’m here ‘cause I wanna be...if I didn’t wanna be, I wouldn’t. I care about yeh, want you safe.” It was clipped, not unkind, but to the point.
You didn’t respond, letting the night cover over the conversation like a drape, a thick blanket taking over your eyelids. Nestling under the covers, feeling the warmth of another human being to your left...hearing the rustling of the covers as Harry got comfortable beneath them…
You felt the cover lift from your body as Harry moved underneath it, his arm securing around your waist and pulling you comfortably closer to his chest. His head tucked against your shoulder, his lips pressed familiarly against your back. You smelled like alcohol, as if it stained your pores, but he didn’t mind too much. Just liked knowing where you were, that you were safe.
“Harry?”
Words felt different in the complete dark, more confessional. It was safer, to say these sorts of things. As if they could be more easily written off, than it spoken during the day. Your mind was shutting down for the night, you could see the swirling storms of dreams out against the grey horizon. But you just needed to say...
“Yeah?”
“Thanks. For not leaving me.”
“’Course. ’M forever yours,” he mumbled, holding you tighter.
“Goodnight, Haz.”
 “Night, love.”

Interview with Rence
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Rence over Zoom video!
Genre-defying singer, songwriter, and producer Rence recently released his latest single “Strawberry Blonde”via Epic Records.
“Strawberry Blonde” follows the release of previous singles “Sometimes Things Just Fall Apart” and “Tears In December,” which have already racked up close to 2 million combined streams and received praise from the likes of tmrw Magazine, EARMILK, Euphoria and Lyrical Lemonade who called “Tears In December” “a song you NEED to listen to before the day is over.”
About the track, Rence commented, “Taken at face value the lyrics of ‘Strawberry Blonde’ tell a story about someone worried about everything – their past, the future, everything – their unsureness is taking a toll on the relationship, and signals aren’t clear. To me, it’s the secondary meaning that really rings true. As I sat with the song for a while, I realized that I was talking about myself thinking things too much. I assumed we’re free of blame and worry, when really we’re the ones freaking out.”
Rence continues to consistently deliver and affirm his status as one of the most exciting new artists to watch of 2020. His solo releases continue to shine with “hate u btw” clocking over 1 million streams as “Type 2” is about to cross the 2 million mark. Notably, Wonderland praised Rence in their feature of “Type 2” calling him, “one artist to keep an eye on very closely in 2020.”
Capitalizing on the momentum sparked by the release of his Fall 2019 EP, Rence has received much acclaim as Pigeons & Planes named him among "Best New Artists". Meanwhile, his breakout single "Expensive" [feat. Noah Cyrus] recently surpassed 8.2 million global streams. Having wrapped a North American tour with Christian French this Winter, Rence has gone on to received looks and acclaim from the likes of Nylon, i-D, The FADER, Billboard, Paper and more.
About Rence:
Sharing real life snapshots in song, Rence magnifies his personal perspective through a genre-less palette, bordering pop, alternative, electro, indie and hip-hop all at once, yet never dipping into one for too long. He introduced himself on the breakthrough independent project, Pink. The lead single “Baby Blue” racking up nearly 10 million streams. Peers such as Lauv, Chelsea Cutler and FLETCHER lent support as critical acclaim came from Hilly Dilly, Lyrical Lemonade, Ones To Watch, Elevator Magazine, and more. Tastemaker Zane Lowe handpicked “Ways To Go” as his “World Record” on Apple Music’s Beats 1. Signing to Epic Records, Rence’s 2019 single “Expensive” [feat. Noah Cyrus] made waves and turned heads right out of the gate receiving looks from Nylon, Billboard, and Paper. The song now has over 8 million global streams, while the music video has amassed over 800K YouTube/VEVO views. Of the latter, Billboard wrote, “Though the beat is quite dynamic, with synths and a toe-tapping bass line, the clip takes a darker turn, following closely with the lyrical meaning.” He also showed no signs of slowing down with his major label debut EP FALL 2019 and consistent output continued in 2020 with the bold and buzz-y “hate u, btw,” “Type 2,” “Tears in December,” “Sometimes Things Just Fall Apart” and now “Strawberry Blonde.”

The Incredible True Story of How Ben Stiller and a Ukulele Changed My Life
I guess I will begin this blog by telling you about my journey to publishing so far, which begins with a ukulele. Or, no. Depending on how far back you want to go, my path to getting a book deal actually begins with me taking major life advice from a Ben Stiller movie.
It was January 1st, 2014. Somehow the husband (who will hereafter be referred to as Sensitive Man because, trust me, he is) and I managed to both have the day off from work. And it was a holiday, at that! We decided to head out of town to do some shopping and catch a movie. On the drive, I checked my phone to see what was playing. Not much, but there was a movie based on a short story I'd read and sort of liked in high school: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. So we saw that.
I loved it. I wasn't expecting to love it. I thought it'd be silly and pointless like a lot of Ben Stiller comedies, but it's kind of inspiring. It's about a daydreamer finding the courage to go after all the things he really wants. Most notably for me, though, was that a big chunk of the movie takes place in Iceland.
At that point in my life, I'd been daydreaming about my own trip to Iceland for about two years. I'd also been writing for about two years. They're connected, you see. The first novel--well, really the first anything--I'd ever written was a YA Fantasy that takes place in a fictionalized version of Iceland. So, there I was watching this movie about a very anxious man taking a big risk and going to this place that I knew I really wanted to go. I had traveled extensively within the United States as a child, but not so much as an adult. Actually, going out of the country sort of terrified me. Lots of things do. But I wanted to be like Walter and DO THE THING. So I decided right then in a movie theater on New Year's Day that I was going to Iceland.
And I did. Four months later I spent the week of my 30th birthday in Iceland. It was amazing. So amazing, in fact, that when I came home and friends would ask me about my trip, I couldn't quite find the words for it. I kept it to myself, for the time being anyway.
Fast forward another year. January 1st, 2015. Another New Year's Day and I was feeling less than inspired. I had been working on the same book for three years and I still didn't have it figured out. I'd crossed an ocean to try and find the missing pieces of this book and it was becoming a bigger mess each time I made a trip to the keyboard. That's it. I'm out, I thought. Writing is not for me. I'm kind of a serial craft-hopper, skipping from one creative hobby to the next. In the past I've been a photographer, a zinester, a knitter, an art journal instructor... the list goes on. So, even though I kind of liked writing, I felt so stuck that I decided the best thing for me would be to find a new creative outlet. So, I bought a ukulele.
Tumblr media
My uke is super cute. It's pinkish purple. Or purple-ish pink? And the sound hole is heart shaped. When I pick it up I feel like a curvy girl version of Zooey Deschanel, complete with giant bangs and kitschy dresses (it's a running joke with Sensitive Man that I'm his manic pixie dream girl). Hooooowever, I couldn't play this instrument. Or any others. I suck at music things. Always have, always will. And it's not for lack of trying. I practiced my ukulele for an hour every day for two months and saw zero improvement. I wanted to learn how to play "Little Talks" but by the end of it, all I could do with my ukulele was scare off stray cats.
I repeat, zero improvement.
And, so, out of sheer creative desperation, I started writing again. A different book this time. The YA Fantasy Book of My Heart still exists, mostly finished but mostly flawed. The new book I started working on is about a lot of things that matter quite a bit to me, but mostly I think it's about finding the courage to keep going after something so horrible happens that it seems the calendar should have just stopped and you should have just crumbled to dust, but you didn't and so now what? It is also about a very anxious person taking their first trip out of the country--to Iceland. This was a very personal story that I wrote mostly at three in the morning when there was nothing for me to do but get up out of bed and let it out.
It took me three months to write Miles Away from You. And at the end of it, I had this thing that I loved so much that I entered it into a pitch contest. First draft. Big no-no. Actually, an even bigger admission here is that I wasn't even done with MAFY when I entered the contest. I had a full draft, but it was only 45,000 words, which does not a novel make. Still, I thought, eh I can squeeze out 5,000 more words to at least make it novel length. When I was looking over the contest mentor list, I saw a picture of beautiful dark-haired girl in a cute dress, surrounded by a stack of books. Just looking at Alana Saltz's picture made me want to be her friend. I was sure she was destined to be my mentor. And even though I'm painfully shy, I decided to reach out to her on Twitter. Over the next few weeks we talked about our shared love of Francesca Lia Block, and about ukuleles--I'd learned she played the uke from her blog. And then the big day came. Out of around 2,000 people, I was one of twenty chosen by a Pitch to Publication mentor. Alana loved my novel and wanted to work with me! I laughed out loud when in her email she said one of the reasons she'd chosen me was because of our little ukulele talks on Twitter. I knew I picked up that darn thing for a reason!
Alana and I scrubbed and polished my manuscript, adding another ten thousand words and tidying up my ramblings. I had to learn to use tracking changes and how to properly format a manuscript for the first time. Then, the scariest thing ever--presenting my novel to a panel of agents. In the first few days, I didn't get any bites. Alana and I were bummed. She promised to help me compile a list of other agents to send it out to. I quietly wondered to myself if I'd ever get up the courage to actually do that. This contest had taken up so much of my mental energy and suddenly we'd tanked. Then, finally, I got a request. And then another! With shaky hands, I sent my full to the agents. The first sent me a really encouraging rejection. She loved the novel, but not enough to take it on. And the second, Moe Ferrara of BookEnds, wanted to do a phone call. Phone calls are good. Phone calls mean the agent probably wants to represent you. I should have been happy. Except that phone calls are my worst enemy.
I'm shy. Not the normal, cute kind of shy. I have the kind of life-ruining social anxiety that makes it impossible for me to do normal things like make doctor appointments, use a drive-thru, or ace a job interview. If I'm nervous, my brain and my mouth disconnect completely. I can't say the things I want to say, and I can't stop myself from saying stupid things, either. I told Moe via email that she could call me, but that I'm shy. I hadn't quite learned yet to explain my shyness further. The bad news was that I was about to go to Chicago for a music festival and didn't have time for a phone call before I left. So I had to leave out for my trip and spend a whole week trying not to think about this life-changing phone call that had to happen when I got back. Anyway, when I returned we did the stupid phone call and it went as horribly as I'd imagined. I would tell you about it, but please don't make me relive it. Okay, so, after that Moe agreed not to call me anymore, because, yes, it was that bad. We had a few more emails where we asked each other questions, then she offered to represent me! I was slightly apprehensive because she's a new agent, but I knew I'd regret turning down a definite yes to just go on the hunt. Even if I did gather up the courage to query different agents, there would be more phone calls! Besides, I liked Moe and I could tell she really understood my book. So, I said yes. Via email, of course.
Here is where I point out that this is a unicorn story. I think I'm the only writer in history to ever have gotten an agent without sending a single query letter. And I did it on my second draft. I was so superstitious about these facts for a long time that I told nobody. It still blows my mind.
Moe and I did more scrubbing and polishing. She writes really kick-ass, hilarious editorial notes, btw, full of obscure pop culture references and song lyrics. She's my kinda lady. When all that was said and done, we sent my book baby out on submission to publishers. Sub is a special kind of hell, and I figured mine would be particularly bad considering how I'd probably used all my good karma grabbing an agent on the first try. And it did suck. A lot. Sub was seven months of checking my email every 2.5 minutes, trying to decode the vague, non-sensical rejections I kept getting (this one says the plot is convoluted, another says my story isn't complex enough...) and lots and lots of ice cream. We were on our third round with the rejection count well into the double digits and I was making plans on what to do next if this book didn't sell when...the phone rang. I was in the break room at work (long term retail job because hey have I mentioned I suck at job interviews) listening to This American Life with my headphones in when the story stopped and my phone was buzzing in my hand. I looked down at the screen and the caller ID said MOE FERRERA. I thought, is this it? And it was! Moe was calling to tell me that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt had made an offer on my book. I was speechless. Moe apologized for calling, but she wanted to hear my reaction. I think she was sad I didn't scream. She kept saying, "It's okay. You can freak out," but I didn't because I was in the break room and people would stare. And then she said, "Oh my God you will not believe this. I'm looking out my hotel room window and there is a FUCKING RAINBOW." MAFY is filled with all kinds of queer kid goodness (and many, many f-bombs) so suddenly this was the most perfect moment in the world. I wanted to look out the window for a rainbow, but there weren't any windows in my sad retail job break room, so I made Moe send me a photo of hers.
Tumblr media
So, that's the story of how I took major life advice from a Ben Stiller movie, sucked ass at the ukulele, and some how ended up finding the rainbow at the end. Miles Away from You will be in bookstores everywhere Spring 2018.
