Tell me about a turn of phrase that introduced you to the power of language, especially if it comes from a source that most people disregard.
I'll start: one of the first times I really fell in love with a line from a song was when I heard "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" on the radio.
The chorus goes:
I'm not talking about moving in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowing the stars around
And I'd really love to see you tonight
I have been obsessed with the line "there's a warm wind blowing the stars around" since I was something like 6 years old. It's so beautifully economic in its word use, isn't it? You know that the night is clear and beautiful, it's windy but warm, it's a perfect night for being outside and looking at the sky. In eight words, even as a small child, I had a perfect mental image of what that night looks like.
The other one that always comes to mind is the Muppet Christmas Carol song "It Feels Like Christmas," for one line only:
It is the summer of the soul in December
The "s" sound in summer, soul, and December all fall on the beat. It is a perfect example of using consonance (as opposed to alliteration, which would require those sounds to all be at the start of the word) in lyrics or poetry, and is one of the first times I really remember that concept sticking in my mind. (I use consonance very heavily in my poetry, so that's, like, formative.)
Tell me about the language that showed you what language can do - and for my sanity, please make it cool stuff and not like "and that's how I learned how shitty propaganda works," bc while that is in fact part of how language works, this is Tunglr dot com and I'd prefer to have a nice time today. Thanks.

The Sweetest Dream
Merry Christmas, @peacehopeandrats! I’m your Secret Santa! I hope you like your fic and that you will forgive me for taking at least part of your prompt in a way that I’m sure you didn’t intend!
Prompt: Coco, fire, fresh snow, bakery
Summary: Ever since Belle French opened her bakery in Storybrooke, Frank Gold has looked forward to the days she brings free samples to the townsfolk. Her kind heart always includes him in her rounds and he cherishes the moments they spend together, bonding over cookies and cake.
Title from Muppet Christmas Carol
Read on AO3
“Good morning, Mr Gold!”
The tinkle of the bell above his shop door accompanied the lilting voice of the woman who had just stepped through. Frank Gold looked up from his ledger to greet his visitor, noting the covered tray in her hands and the wide smile on her face.
“Miss French, a pleasure as always.” He placed his pen down to give her his full attention. What gastronomic delights bring you to my shop today?”
“It's Christmas!” She held up the tray as if that explained everything.
“It's November.”
“Exactly, I'm already behind!” She practically bounced over to set her tray down on the counter and lift the lid. “I'm about to start on our seasonal menu and wanted to get your opinion on which flavours you like best.”
This was not an unusual occurrence. Belle French owned and ran the local bakery, Storybrookies, which she'd opened earlier that year, and often went around town handing out samples to drum up business. His shop must have been on her route as she came in most days to give him a taste of her latest creations.
He moved his gaze down towards the counter top and eyed the various confections there. “So this is market research?”
“Exactly! Got to give the public what they want!” She pointed to each cookie in turn as she rattled their names off. “We have mint choc chip, chocolate orange shortbread, and cinnamon and basil.”
Try as he might, Gold couldn't stop his lips curling in distaste at that last one. “Whatever happened to good old-fashioned gingerbread?”
“We'll have that as well, of course, but this is my bakery's first Christmas and I wanted to offer something different, maybe be a bit adventurous. All I will say is don't knock it till you've tried it.”
“Hmm.” Tentatively Gold picked up each cookie, carefully tasting them one at a time as Belle looked on eagerly. He could see how important this was to her, so he closed his eyes and opened his mind to better savour the different flavours, wanting to give each a fair chance.
“Well?” Her patience had apparently run out as she prompted him for his opinion, her voice strangely breathless. He opened his eyes to find her own fixated on his face, her pupils blown wide with her eagerness for his answer.
He carefully placed down the remains of the final cookie that was still in his hand. “I'm afraid you haven't convinced me that cinnamon and basil is in any way a reasonable flavour combination. However I am fond of the first two, the shortbread in particular."
Belle beamed. “I hoped you'd like that one. I know that shortbread is Scottish and chocolate orange is more of a popular flavour over there so combining them seemed like a good idea...” she trailed off with a blush that Gold didn't understand.
“It was,” he agreed. “But as you say, it's a flavour that's more popular over there than here. How has it gone down with the other people you've asked?”
“Oh. Um, you're actually the first person I've shown these to.” Belle looked down and began fiddling with the tray, picking up the half-eaten cookie that he'd left. “I value your opinion, you see. And I know you'll give me honest feedback.”
Gold felt a strange warmth in his chest at her words. “Well, I'm glad you feel you can rely on me. However, as I'm sure you're aware, a sample size should be as large as possible to most accurately reflect public opinion.”
“Of course.” She put the cookie down again before replacing the lid on the tray and lifting it into her arms. “That's why I'm on my way now to canvass the town. Who knows, maybe cinnamon and basil will reign supreme.”
“Knowing some of the inhabitants of this town as I do, that wouldn't surprise me.”
Belle laughed as she carried the tray to the door, walking backwards until the last possible moment and throwing a parting glance over her shoulder as she left. “See you around, Mr Gold.”

“Good morning, Mr Gold!”
“Miss French,” Gold felt himself smiling as the bell chimed and the familiar voice met his ears. It had been a few days since she had graced his shop and he found himself missing her presence.
“I'm sorry I haven't been around for a while, but the bakery has been so busy. We started selling the chocolate orange shortbread last week and it's been a huge hit.”
“I'm glad to hear it.”
“And to thank you for your invaluable input I thought I'd bring over some of my festive hot cocoa.” She reached into her bag to produce a thermos. “It's spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and star anise.”
He watched as she brought out two mugs, pouring an equal share into each before handing him one.
“Thank you.” He gave the concoction a cautious sip, relishing in the initial taste before taking another longer one. The perfectly spiced chocolate slipped over his tongue like velvet and he had to use all his willpower to prevent a rather unseemly moan from escaping his lips. He took a few seconds to compose himself before speaking. “Another triumph, I would say. I imagine this must be one of your best sellers too.”
Belle took a sip from her own mug before shaking her head. “I don't sell this at the bakery. It's my own personal recipe.”
“Oh.” Gold looked into his mug and felt his heart flutter at the thought she would have made something personal especially for him. He ruthlessly tamped that idea down before he could get any fanciful notions in his head. She was thanking him for his help, that was all. She probably made the same thing for everyone else in town whose opinion she had sought out.
“Well I thank you for sharing it with me. Do you mind if I ask how you came up with the recipe?”
“It was my mother's.” Her voice took on a melancholy twinge and he instantly regretted the question. “We used to make it together every Christmas. It was our holiday tradition, no matter how hot the weather was. Dad thought we were mad having cocoa in summer but I loved it.”
Her eyes had taken on a faraway look as she cradled her mug carefully and he thought he knew the answer to his next question but felt compelled to ask anyway. “Is your mother...?” he trailed off, unsure how to finish.
“She died.” Belle brought her eyes back to him and smiled sadly. “A few years ago now. I still make the same recipe every Christmas though. It's a lot more seasonally appropriate now I've moved here, but I must admit that sometimes I miss the incongruity of sitting in the bright sunshine with my hot cocoa. That probably sounds silly, I know.”
“Not at all. I used to...” he trailed off, unsure whether he wanted to go where he'd been about to. His fingers twitched and he put his mug down before he dropped it.
“You used to?” She looked at him with such an open and honest expression he felt almost helpless in the face of it. Something about her compelled him to speak about things that he'd kept locked up inside of himself for years.
“I used to make paper snowflakes with my son. My ex-wife hated them, said that they looked cheap and tacky, but we had fun. It was the time spent together that was special.”
“You have a son!” Belle's face brightened, then quickly fell as something seemed to occur to her. “Is he...?”
“Oh, no, nothing like that,” he was quick to reassure her. “He's alive. He lives in New York with his wife and a son of his own now. But we did have a falling out a few years ago. It was a bad one and all my fault, of course. I didn't hear from him in so long I feared the worst so many times.”
“I'm sorry.” She placed her mug down and reached out to cover his hand with hers where it rested on the counter. His breath caught at her touch and he kept perfectly still for fear of losing it. “But it sounds like you've heard from him since?”
“Yes. He got in contact with me not long after Henry was born. Said he finally understood how terrifying it was to be a father. We had a long talk, I apologised and he forgave me. I didn't deserve it, but then he's always been a better person than me in every way.”
“I think the kind of person he is is a reflection of the man who raised him.” She squeezed his hand gently. “Is he coming for the holidays?”
“No.” He sighed. “He said they want a quiet Christmas at home this year. I don't think he's ready to completely trust me yet and I can understand that. I just wish we hadn't lost all those years we could have spent together due to my stupidity.”
“I think you need to stop beating yourself up about it. The past is the past and all you can do now is move forward. Your son is alive, he's forgiven you and you'll have many Christmasses in the future to spend together, I'm sure.” She leaned towards him, her eyes locked on his while he stared at her dumbly. Apparently he was silent too long because she blushed and pulled away from him, lifting her hand from his. “Sorry, I'm probably overstepping here. Please tell me to shut up and go away.”
“Never,” he breathed, before clearing his throat. “No, I mean, you're right. As usual.”
He reached for his cocoa once again and brought the mug to his lips, grateful for both the shield it provided and the warmth it brought back after the loss of her touch.
They finished their drinks in a companionable silence, as though any further words would break the spell that had fallen over them. Sooner than Gold would have liked, Belle began packing their empty mugs into her bag and made to leave.
Walking to the door, she turned and looked as though she wanted to say something else but thought better of it, deciding to go with her usual parting instead.
“See you around, Mr Gold.”
~*~
“Good morning, Mr Gold!” Belle's cheery voice betrayed none of the heaviness of their previous conversation and Gold was glad for it. He had been half afraid she would be put off visiting him again after the revelations of the other day.
“Good morning, Miss French.” Gold looked up and felt his eyes widen. “What on earth do you have on your head?”
“They're reindeer antlers!” She shook her head to make the attached bell jingle, and he was momentarily mesmerised by the way her curls bounced around her shoulders. “Do you like them? I could get you a pair if you like.”
He shuddered. “That's very thoughtful but I think I'll pass, thank you.”
“Are you sure? I think you'd look very dashing.”
“I highly doubt that. They look far better on you than they ever would on me.”
Belle's radiant smile nearly blinded him and it took him a second to realise she had moved forward and was now holding a paper bag out to him. “Here.”
“What's this?” He took it from her outstretched hand.
“It's a 'good old-fashioned gingerbread man.'”
He peeked into the paper bag and raised an eyebrow. “Since when do gingerbread men wear suits?”
“That's what makes him so old-fashioned.” Belle laughed, tilting her head and leaning forward on the counter almost conspiratorially. She looked out the window and sighed wistfully before turning back to him. “Do you think it's going to snow soon?”
“Probably,” he grumbled. “We've been lucky so far but I can feel a chill in the air. At least we're spared the worst of it being this close to the sea.”
She lightly slapped his arm and he looked at her hand in surprise as she admonished him. “Oh humbug Mr Gold, don't tell me you're a snow-hater.”
“Live in Maine long enough and you will be too,” he responded drily.
“Well, I love it. We never had snow when I was growing up in Melbourne. Then I moved here and I can still remember the first morning I woke up to a snowy day. It was like the world was covered in a pure white blanket, glittering in the sun. I thought it was the most beautiful sight I'd ever seen.”
“And did you still think that when you had to shovel three feet of the stuff off your driveway? Or when it felt like your fingers were going to fall off from frostbite? Or when you slipped on hidden ice and nearly broke your neck?”
She eyed him suspiciously. “How do you know about that?”
“Lucky guess,” he deadpanned.
“Well, it was just the one time and I learned my lesson.” She held up a finger accusingly. “High heeled ankle boots may look cute but are not practical for icy weather.”
With deliberate slowness Gold peered over the counter. He was not at all surprised to see a pair of red heels at the end of her shapely legs.
Before his brain could go in a dangerous direction he forced his eyes back up to hers and raised his brow in silence.
She blushed. “Hey, it's not icy yet. I have a pair of snow boots at the bakery just in case though.”
“As long as you're prepared.”
“I am.” She gave him a wide smile which dimmed slightly as she caught sight of the clock behind him. “Oh, shoot. I have to head off now. I told Ariel I'd be there by ten, so this has to be a flying visit.”
Gold felt heart sink in response, but kept his face neutral to hide his disappointment. “In that case don't let me keep you. And thank you once again for the gingerbread man.”
“You're very welcome and I hope you enjoy it.” She walked to the door and turned back to him with a twinkle in her eye. “Maybe I'll bring you a matching gingerbread lady tomorrow. See you around, Mr Gold!”
~*~
The implied promise in Miss French's words meant that Gold started the next day in an uncharacteristically good mood, hopeful that he wouldn't have to wait too long before another visit from his favourite baker.
That good mood soon faded upon his arrival into town and the sight that greeted him there. The entrance to one of the roads was blocked off and he was just about able to catch a glimpse of flashing lights through the crowd of people gathered by the roadside. Spying David Nolan among their number, he quickly parked his car and grabbed his cane, walking over to the group as quickly as he could.
“Mr Nolan.” He waited for the other man to turn and acknowledge his presence. “What's going on?”
David looked surprised. “You haven't heard? No, I suppose you wouldn't have since the bakery isn't one of your buildings.”
“The bakery?” Gold's stomach twisted as his eyes moved from scanning the scene to focus all his attention on the man next to him. “What about the bakery?”
“There was a fire. Last night. Looks like the whole place has been completely destroyed.”
Gold felt as though a cold vice had gripped his heart. He could barely breathe except to stutter out a single word. “Belle?”
“Oh, don't worry. Belle's fine.” David waved his hand, apparently unaware of the magnitude of his words. “I mean she's devastated, obviously, but no one was inside the building at the time.”
David's gaze moved from Gold's face to somewhere over his shoulder, leading Gold to turn his head to follow his line of sight. Belle stood near the edge of the crowd, her arms wrapped around herself as though for protection against the world.
Barely aware that David was still speaking to him, Gold turned the rest of his body and set out in her direction. One of her friends, the grumpy one, was standing nearby and appeared to be attempting to provide support but Gold paid him no mind as he approached Belle.
“Miss French.” The greeting felt woefully inadequate, but it was all he could think of in the moment.
“Oh, Mr Gold, hi.” Belle turned to him, lifting a hand to wipe away the tears that were still clearly visible on her face. “I'm sorry, I don't think I'm going to have any gingerbread for you today.”
He watched as the corners of her mouth turned up in a weak approximation of a smile before her entire face crumbled again.
“Don't worry about it.” Gold flinched, mentally kicking himself for such an inane response. He scrambled for something better to say before settling on what he should have started with in the first place. “Are you all right?”
“No,” she huffed quietly before visibly steeling herself and meeting his eyes, “but I will be. Nobody was hurt, which is the main thing. It's just... hard. To see everything I've worked for, everything I've put my heart and soul into, be destroyed so completely.”
“I'm sorry.” His fingers itched to comfort her but he wasn't sure he'd be welcome, so instead he just continued to stand ineffectually at her side, wishing he had something better to say. “You have insurance, I assume?”
“Of course.” She nodded. “But it's going to take weeks to sort it all out and then even longer to rebuild. There's no way I'm going to have a bakery in time for Christmas.”
“Perhaps you could use one of the empty properties in town as a temporary base. I happen to know there are a few available.”
“That's very kind of you, Mr Gold, but until the insurance pays out I'm not going to be able to afford to rent anywhere, let alone buy the equipment I'm going to need.”
“I could pay for anything you...”
“No.” Her face was resolute as she cut him off. “I mean, I appreciate the offer, I really do. It's just that I don't want...”
“It's all right, Miss French. I completely understand.” It was his turn to cut her off and he tried not to let the sting of rejection hurt too much. “Perhaps a fundraiser then.”
“What, like charity?”
“I prefer to think of it as community. The bakery is such a beloved part of this town, I'm sure the townsfolk would be more than happy to help you get back on your feet. It would be in everyone's best interest to have you back in business as soon as possible.”
“Really? My bakery is beloved?” Belle had the first real smile he'd seen on her face all day.
“Of course. You've said yourself how busy you've been.”
“True, I guess. But I'm not sure, I wouldn't feel right taking people's money when I'll be getting the insurance payout eventually.”
“As you said, that could take weeks. Would you really deprive Storybrooke of your baked delights for all that time?” He could see she was still unsure, so went for an angle that he knew would appeal to her. “And when you do receive the insurance money you could take whatever amount the town raised for you and donate it to another worthwhile cause. Pay it forward, as they say. I know the library is always struggling with their budget and would be very appreciative of funds to purchase new books.”
That caught her attention, just as he'd suspected it would, so he continued, “and if you're worried about the appearance of impropriety you can always ask the town council to organise it. Keep everything above board.”
“Thank you for the suggestion, Mr Gold,” she said, and he was pleased to see a thoughtful expression on her face. “I'll definitely think about it.”
Gold nodded his farewells and took his leave. He felt confident that Belle would be all right in the company of her friends. The grumpy one was still hovering protectively, and he'd seen the Lucas girl pushing her way through the crowd heading in their direction.
He made his way straight to his shop but didn't open for business right away, opting to retreat to the back room while he made some calls. He had arrangements to make.
~*~
A few days later Gold stood at the side of the road, watching as Belle and her friends set up her new premises.
He hadn't talked to her in a while, but she looked happy and he was glad for that. He was so focused on watching her that he didn't notice David Nolan approaching him until it was too late.
“Hey, Gold”
“Mr Nolan.” Gold inclined his head and made to move away, but David refused to let him go.
“You know, this was a good thing you did.”
Gold blinked. “I'm sure I have no idea what you're talking about.”
“Making this place available for Belle. Marco told me that it was an empty shell last week, yet somehow it's been brought up to code and ready to rent in just a few days. I can't imagine how much that would have cost you.”
“I don't know how it goes in your line of work, Mr Nolan, but in the landlord business it's always better to have an income than to not. Investing money into a property in order to rent it out is what I do.”
“Uh huh.” The man had a smug look on his face that Gold didn't like one bit. “And, where is this rental income coming from exactly? The money the town raised with the fundraiser?”
“How should I know?” Gold flicked his hand dismissively. “All that matters to me is being paid the money I'm owed. The source of the funds is not my concern.”
“Really? You don't care at all? Because, you know, there's a funny thing about that fundraiser.” David looked around and lowered his voice conspiratorially, “Mary Margaret told me that while a lot of people were willing to donate, they weren't able to give all that much. Certainly nowhere near the amount necessary. Apparently almost all of the money raised came from one, extremely generous, anonymous donor.”
“What exactly is your point?” Gold snarled, baring his teeth.
“Why don't you just tell her that you like her?”
“Excuse me?”
“Belle. Tell her that you like her.”
“You're being ridiculous.” Gold tried again to move away, but David refused to let up.
“Am I? Because I've known you for years and in all that time I've never seen you do anything without some ulterior motive.”
Gold's mouth twisted. He knew what people thought of him, of course, but to have it laid out so baldly, and from someone he almost considered a friend, still stung. “I see. And you think if I tell Miss French that I donated the money to help her bakery then she will feel so grateful she'll have sex with me.”
“What? No!” David seemed flustered. “Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. I just meant that this is the first time I've seen you do something nice for someone just because you wanted to help them. She must be pretty special.”
“Yes, well. It doesn't matter.” Gold felt his fingers twitch remembering their previous conversation. “Miss French made it very clear that she wants nothing to do with me.”
“Are you sure about that?” David looked over his shoulder in confusion. “Because she talks about you a lot. And it sure doesn't seem like she wants nothing to do with you.”
“Perhaps you don't know her as well as you think you do. Good day, Mr Nolan.” Gold finally managed to make his escape, barely resisting the urge to look back and attempt to catch another glimpse of Belle as he did so.
~*~
One of the advantages of a reputation such as his was that people didn't generally seek him out if they didn't have to, which meant that his evenings at home usually went undisturbed.
That's why the knock on his door, coming not long after his return, was such a surprise to him.
The sight of the very woman who had occupied his thoughts most of the day stood on his front porch was yet another surprise.
“Good evening, Mr Gold,” she greeted him with a soft smile on her face.
“Miss French.” Gold stared at her dumbly. “What are you doing here?”
Her smile faltered at his rather unwelcoming response, but she pressed on. “I wanted to talk to you. Can I come in?”
“Oh, yes, of course.” He stood back to allow her entry before closing the door behind her. “May I take your coat?”
She seemed relieved at this indication that he wasn't going to kick her out immediately and smiled again, placing her bag down as she removed her overcoat, passing it into his outstretched hand for him to hang up.
When he turned back around he saw her reaching into her bag and pulling out a small box, which she handed to him.
“Here. I, um, I brought some cookies. The first batch made in my new bakery. I wanted to say thank you. For everything”
“It's no matter.” He shrugged, trying to downplay his involvement, as he led her into the kitchen, placing the cookies down on the counter. “The place was sitting empty. This way we both get something out of it.”
“Right.” She bit her lip before taking a deep breath. “See, the thing is... David told me. That you donated the money too.”
Gold made a mental note to have words with Mr Nolan about the consequences of gossip. “He shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry. I know you didn't want me involved and I hope you're not too upset...”
He was cut off by the sudden pressure of her small body crashing into his. Her arms wound around his back and he could feel her breath on his neck. Gold felt his heart stutter in his chest at the contact and he almost missed the words she whispered into his skin.
“I'm not upset.” The quaver in her voice gave him pause, and he pulled back slightly. Belle mirrored his actions, but instead of letting him go she tilted her head, bringing her lips close to his. Ice ran through his veins as he understood her intention and he pushed her away more roughly than he meant to, taking a step back and planting his cane in front of his feet like a shield.
“Miss French, please. I don't know what Nolan told you, but you don't owe me anything. And even if you did I am most certainly not the kind of monster who would expect...that.” The fact that she thought him capable of such things hurt more than he could express and he hoped she would leave soon so he could drown his sorrows in scotch.
“You're not a monster at all,” she cried, moving forward to close the distance between them again and placing her hands over his on his cane. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. I shouldn't have done that. And I shouldn't have refused your kind offer the way I did. I hope you know it was never because I was afraid you would hold it over me. I know you wouldn't. I just didn't want you to think I was only interested in you for your money.”
“You... what?” It was an inarticulate response, but his mind had gone blank and he couldn't quite comprehend the meaning of her words.
“Because it was never about that and I wouldn't want you to think it was. I should have known better, I see that now, but I was so afraid of ruining what we have. I'd just lost my bakery and I couldn't bear to lose you too.”
“You're... interested in me?” He felt like his world had been turned upside down in just a few seconds and he never wanted it to right itself. Could she really be saying what he thought she was?
“Of course,” she laughed. “Why do you think I was always at your shop bringing you baked goods?”
“I just thought you were giving out free samples to everyone.”
“Mr Gold, if I gave out as many samples to everyone else as I gave to you I'd have gone out of business months ago.”
“But... why?”
“Because I like you. I like spending time with you. I like talking to you. And I thought...” Here her expression flickered. “I thought maybe you felt the same.”
“I do,” he was quick to reassure her. The last thing he wanted was yet another misunderstanding between them. “Your visits are the highlight of my days. I just never imagined it was possible that you could reciprocate my feelings.”
“Well I do.” She smiled shyly. “You don’t know how many times I wanted to reach across that counter and kiss you. Speaking of which… may I now?”
“By all means,” he breathed.
This time when she moved closer to him he didn't resist, instead bringing his hand up to stroke the side of her face, sliding it around to cup the back of her head as their lips met.
Gold felt tempted to pinch himself, half-convinced that he was having the most wonderful dream. Belle's lips were soft and sweet, moving gently against his as he responded in kind. The kiss was undemanding and delicate, but he could feel the potential for more passionate ones in the future bubbling under the surface.
When they pulled apart he rested his forehead against hers, delighting in sharing her breath as they smiled at each other.
“Would you...” he broke the silence. “Would you like to stay for dinner, Miss French?”
“I would love to.” Her smile widened even further. “And I think it's about time you call me Belle.”
“Belle.” He spoke her name like a caress. “You can call me Frank.”
She pulled back a little and raised an eyebrow. “Your name is Frank Gold?”
“Yes,” he sighed. “And yes, I was called 'Incense and Myrrh' every Christmas throughout all my school years.”
She giggled slightly, “I'm sorry. But that's adorable.”
“I'm glad you think so.”
“If it makes you feel any better, the kids at my school called me Jingle Belle.”
“Actually, it does.” He blinked, wondering what to say next when movement in the darkness outside caught his eye. “Huh.”
“What?” She turned and he could see the moment she noticed what he had as she pulled away in excitement. “Oh wow, it's snowing!”
“Apparently so.” They moved closer to the window to better see the thick white flakes. “And it looks like there's going to be a lot of it.”
“It's so beautiful,” she sighed, leaning into his side. For once he didn't feel like disagreeing. “But I should probably mention that I didn't bring any snow boots with me.”
She looked up at him with a mischievous grin that he returned, before glancing down at her heels. “I suppose you'll just have to stay here then. Those shoes are definitely not appropriate for this weather.”
“I suppose so.” He could hear the smile in her voice. “I did bring the ingredients for my festive cocoa though. I thought we could make it together.”
His breath caught as he comprehended the magnitude of what she was offering. “I'd like that.”

Christmas Eve, Five Years Later
“Good morning, Mr Gold!” Belle's cheerful voice rang out through his shop as she stepped through the door. Gold smiled at the familiar sound as he raised his head from his ledger to greet her in return.
“Good morning, Mrs Gold.” He put his pen down as she skipped over to give him a quick kiss. “What brings you here?”
“I wanted to remind you that we both need to get home by four at the latest if we're going to have the festive cocoa ready by the time Bae and Emma arrive. You know as soon as they get here Henry's going to be having you make paper snowflakes with him all evening.”
“I remember.” Warmth spread through him as he thought about having all his family together for Christmas again this year. “You didn't have to leave the bakery to come and tell me that, I'm sure this must be a busy morning for you.”
“It is,” Belle admitted, “but Ariel and Astrid have it under control. And... I wanted to give you this.”
He took the paper bag she held out to him and reached inside, pulling out two gingerbread figures. One was clearly a man, decorated with a suit that matched the one he was currently wearing. The other was a woman wearing a dress the same colour as Belle's, but with a far more prominent waistline than his wife had.
He looked up at her, watching the way she bit her lip as the meaning of the gift dawned on him. “Are you...?”
“I am,” she confirmed, placing a gentle hand over her stomach. “It's still early days so I don't want to announce it yet, but I wanted you to know. Of course this does mean we'll have to come up with a reason why I'm not drinking any of the eggnog tonight.”
Gold laughed in delight, hurrying around the side of the counter as quickly as he could to throw his arms around his wife. Just when he'd thought his life was as happy as it could possibly be, she went and proved him wrong. She'd always been good at that.
Belle returned his hug, her own arms tight around his back, before pulling away and looking into his eyes, tears in her own. “Merry Christmas, Frank,” she whispered, her face moving towards his.
“Merry Christmas, Belle,” he replied, closing the distance between them and capturing her lips with his own.

Christmas Movies and Kisses
Summary: Peter Parker x Fe!OC (Alex) -> Peter and Alex have known one another for three years and maybe, finally, this is the year they fall in love.
Warning; Fluff, kissing, spoilers for Muppets Christmas Carol.
They had known one another for three years now. First meeting at Shield HQ, the pair found themselves inseparable. Peter and Alex, Alex and Peter. They were never without one another. Which was why Alex’s mother couldn’t understand why she was still single.
“What about Peter? Maybe that’s why you can’t find a boyfriend. They know that you’re too close to Peter.”
“The reason why I can’t find a boyfriend is because I don’t want one, Mom.” Alex told her for what felt like the thousandth time. “And Peter’s my best friend. If they can’t accept that we’re friends then I’m not meant to be with them. It’s that simple.”
“It sounds like you’re making decisions around Peter and not for yourself.”
“Mom.” Alex warned. “Look, boyfriends will come and go but my friendship with Peter? That is for life. I would rather be alone for the rest of my life and have my friends around me, than widowed, alone and sitting watching the sunset every day without my family.”
“Honey, that’s how you make decisions about how you want to spend the rest of your life with someone.”
“And spending it with Peter wouldn’t be that bad.”
“As friends? Maybe.”
Alex rolled her eyes. “Is this the men and women can’t be friends, speech?”
“Honey, you know I don’t believe that for one second. Look at me and Mark. He’s been my best friend since I was 7.”
“Then you should get it.” Alex told her. “Peter is my ‘Mark’. We’re best friends and nothing will ever change that.”
Alex’s mom smiled and nodded, but she knew the truth. Even if her daughter didn’t. She could see it in Alex’s eyes. How she looked at Peter and smiled at him and how, no matter who was in the room, her eyes would always land on him and no-one else. She just wanted her daughter to be happy. Maybe find a husband? Give her a few grandkids? She was all for being alone if you're happy, but she knew her daughter. She was in love with Peter and when Alex would eventually realize, she was worried it might be a little too late.
“Okay, I think this is done.” Alex held up her decorated cookie and it looked…awful.
Her mom laughed and moved to her side. “Come here, let me show you.”
A few hours later, Alex got into her car and drove back home. Upon entering her apartment, Alex looked around. Someone was here.
“Hello?” She called out after she removed her coat and placed her keys at the side of the door. From under the small table, she took out her side-arm and made her way through her apartment.
“Hello?!” She called out again. And then she heard it.
“Ouch.”
Peter had banged his head on the underside of the kitchen counter. Alex gave a sigh of relief and moved back to place her side-arm back into its safe.
“Peter,”
“Hey,” He smiled a little sheepishly as he rubbed the back of his head. Alex sighed and moved towards her freezer before taking out the peas and holding them to the back of his head.
“I thought you had superpowers that stopped you from doing that.”
“So did I.” He smiled a little, placing his own hand over hers to hold the bag to his head.
“What are you doing here?” She smiled.
They were speaking a little quieter now, standing in front of one another. “I wanted to surprise you.”
Alex now looked around. Most of her apartment was dark, so Peter picked up the remote and handed it to her. She removed her hand from the back of his head and he placed the peas down to watch her type in the code he gave her.
“Type, 25/12.”
“25 12.” Alex said aloud and Peter smiled as he watched her light up, both figuratively and literally.
“Oh, Peter.”
“I know we said we’d decorate together but with you getting pulled in for missions, I didn’t know if you’d have time so I-” She was only half listening to him. “Do you like it?”
“I love it.”
Alex moved around her apartment, admiring all the lights and decorations. “Click the silver button at the bottom.”
Alex did and the lights dimmed, almost resembling snow. “Peter, I can’t believe you did this.”
“Anything for you.”
Alex turned around and found Peter behind her and her first thought was I love you. She’d found herself thinking that a little more often these days. She always thought about it, but recently it had been meaning more than just friends.
“Thank you, Peter. I mean it.” And then it hit her. “Oh, I have something for you, too.”
Rushing back into the kitchen, she picked up the tub her mother had given her. “Open it.”
“Christmas cookies.”
“Freshly baked.” Alex smiled.
Peter took one from the box and bit into it. “I can’t believe you still refuse to give me the recipe. These are amazing!”
“Why, thank you.” Alex smiled. “So, what movie are we watching?”
“There is a selection on the table. You pick.”
Alex moved around him and found three DVDs on the table. “Oh! This one!”
“Muppets Christmas Carol it is.”
Soon, the pair sat down beside one another and pressed play. The pair sang along to each song that came on and eventually, it came to Christmas Past.
“This always scared me.”
“Are you kidding? It still scares me.” Alex added. “Like, can you imagine if you woke up to that floating around your room at night. And it’s a ghost so it’s not like it can die twice.”
The movie continued and just as Scrooge made his way with the final ghost to Bob Crachit’s house, Peter placed his arm around Alex. He didn’t have to look to know that she was crying.
Peter held her closer as the movie got a little darker, and wiped her cheeks with his thumb.
…beg you to share my days…hold you close in a thankful heart.
“See, Tiny Tim’s okay.” Peter smiled.
As the credits rolled, the pair stayed in their position on the sofa. Peter had his legs stretched out and Alex cuddled against his chest.
Eventually, the room settled and all that was left was the lights glowing softly around them.
“Tony’s got that Christmas gala next week.” Peter mentioned. “Would you want to go with me? Apparently we all need a plus one and I was thinking you might want to-”
Alex moved her head so she was looking at him. “I’d love to.”
Peter placed a soft kiss on her forehead before the pair lay down again. If only they could stay like this forever. I’m in love with you, Peter thinks. If only I could finally tell you.
Every day he’d wake up and think Today’s the day. Today’s the day I finally tell you! But then…Not the right time.
“Hey, look.” Peter said as he looked out of the window beside them. “It’s snowing. Alex-”
But Alex didn’t move. Instead, she remained asleep on his chest. Peter was thankful no-one else was there or else they would be able to tell from a million miles away that he was blushing with love.
Peter was careful as he moved, making sure she wouldn’t stir awake. Not that much could. Once Alex fell asleep, it was deep or nothing at all. Peter quietly moved around her apartment, tidying everything up before going into her room and moving back her covers so it would be easier to help her into bed.
Then, picking her up from the sofa, carried her into her bedroom.
“Peter?” She asked.
“It’s okay, go back to sleep.” She wouldn’t remember waking up in the morning.
“Stay with me?”
Peter looked at her sleeping face. Maybe she thought he was somebody else.
She reached out for his hand, “Peter, please stay.”
After a moment, he smiled and whispered; “Okay. Just give me a minute.”
He already had some old clothes in her apartment. With the amount of times he had slept over, he’d be surprised if he didn’t have clothes at her place. And only now did he realize that she was wearing one of his shirts. It only made him fall harder for her.
10 minutes later, Peter pulled back the covers on the other side of her bed and slipped in beside her.
Alex rolled over and faced Peter. She was still tired, but a little awake now. Just enough for her to know that this wasn’t another dream. “Is this okay?” Peter asked her.
She took hold of his hand beneath the covers. “It’s okay.”
Peter smiled and placed another soft kiss to the top of her head and the pair found themselves a little closer, just like before Alex fell asleep.
I’m in love with you, They both think. I love you.
As the sun spilled in, Alex woke up to find Peter still beside her. Neither one of them moved in the night, too comfortable to leave their positions.
Peter woke to the soft sound of Alex’s laugh, “Good morning.”
Peter smiled. “G'Morning.”
Moving his hand, he pushed the few strands of hair from her face so he could see her more clearly, tucking the loose strands behind her ear.
Only, as they lay there together, Peter’s thoughts seemed to take over. With his hand beside her face, he leaned up a little to be over her. It felt like forever and a lifetime had passed by the time he got close enough to kiss her.
“Can-” Peter swallowed. “Can I kiss you?”
Alex tried her best to hide her smile as she gave a subtle nod. Peter moved in slowly, leaving enough time for her to put an end to it before it finally happened.
Peter caught Alex’s lips on his own and it was wonderful.
Alex’s hand came to his side of his own face to try and pull him closer. The kiss only deepened as a result.
Peter removed his hand from her cheek and slid it around her waist.
After a few moments, Alex found herself stradling Peter’s lap as he raised himself so he was sat up.
Pushing the hair from her face, the pair broke apart from their kissing and held their heads against each other’s.
“I need to tell you something, Peter.”
But Peter couldn’t wait. If he didn’t tell her now, he might never get another chance.
“I’m in love with you, Alex.” Alex remained silent whilst he continued. “Maybe I should have told you sooner, or I shouldn’t have told you but if I don’t tell you now I think I might explode.”
Alex smiled and quickly pulled Peter in for a kiss.
“So…is that…?”
Alex nodded and smiled. “I’m in love with you, too.”
“Are you sure?”
Alex let out a small laugh. “Yes, I’m sure.”
Peter smiled. “Good, just checking.”
Alex laughed again, holding his face. “You’re an idiot.”
The pair smiled as she kissed him again, placing as much love and passion into it as she could. She couldn’t think of any other way to prove it to him right now, but right now, her head was in the clouds. She had known she was in love for a while now, but this was it. He was it. Peter was hers and she was his and there was no stopping them now.

@norringtxn tagged me to post 9 of my favourite films.
Won’t go quite as in-depth in my explanations unless someone asks me in comments lolol, because I am a lazy :U These are more or less in order, although I wish The Muppet’s Christmas Carol had made the cut. I tend to count that just as a Christmas movie though rather than any time of the year, and I am forever miffed they cut parts out of the original one I watched so it feels incomplete these days.
Labyrinth is my fave of all time. PotC for obvious reasons, though DMC was my absolute fave of the lot. Ragnarok because it started me writing Loki who had been waiting for me since 2012 but I was busy. GotG 2 would have made it in but I figured I’d only let myself have one Marvel movie in there. The NeverEnding Story is a childhood fave as was TLK, Jurassic Park and the Back to the Future trilogy. JP and BTTF were absolute obsessions I would rewatch religiously. The Princess Bride I was introduced to later in life and adored. Same with Howl’s Moving Castle, which I associate with my husband as we watched many of the Studio Ghibli things together.
Tagging anyone else who’d like to do this if you’re reading it. Tag me back so I can see your faves :D

Zoe
PERFORMER Fran Brill 1993-2015
Jennifer Barnhart 2016-present
DEBUT 1993
DESIGN Ed Christie designer
Rollie Krewson builder
Zoe is a three-year-old monster who first appeared on Sesame Street in Season 25.
Zoe was created to help balance what was then a predominately male cast of Muppets on the series. The color orange was chosen for her design to complement Elmo, who was gaining popularity at the time of her introduction.
Apart from some light jewelry, Zoe was originally unclothed. Beginning in season 33, she started wearing a tutu, as — like many girls of her age — she is obsessed with ballet. Her love of dance is featured in several episodes, as well as the home video release Zoe's Dance Moves.
She occasionally rides a soapbox-style car around Sesame Street, called the Zoemobile, and can sometimes be seen with one of two recurring transitional objects: a pet rock named Rocco and a doll named Mimi. She attended the Day Care Center from season 25 to season 29, and generally celebrates her birthday on September 30 (although this date has been inconsistent).
Her Aunt Chloe has been seen on the show, and her daddy has appeared in a few storybooks. Her Aunt Giselle, who lives in Swan Lake, sent her a tutu in season 34.
DEVELOPMENT
From the book Sesame Street Unpaved: "From several possible designs of the character, 'I picked the one that had a face like Carol Channing,' says Fran Brill. 'I wanted her to be obviously female with jewelry and barrettes in her hair. Someone suggested we call her Frannie, since that's my nickname. But I didn't want a Muppet with my name, so I thought of the J.D. Salinger book Franny and Zooey, and suggested Zoe, which seemed to be just right."
To prepare for the character, Brill went to Manhattan preschools and watched 3-year-old girls play. One of the girls said to Brill the phrase which became an early catchphrase for Zoe, "Don't joke me." When the first Zoe puppet was built, Krewson's daughter suggested they put sparkles in her hair.
Beginning with the 2005 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, more hair was added to Zoe, including pink and glittery hairs. In season 40 (2009), a smaller puppet was used, based on the one created specifically for her role as Mousey the Hatter Helper in Abby in Wonderland. This version was only used for one season, and was replaced by the normal-sized Zoe puppet the following season.
At William Paterson University, Martin P. Robinson explained that Telly hadn't appeared in any scenes with the rebuilt Zoe, and Robinson expected that the moment they would meet, Telly would freak out. Fran Brill proceeded to take out the Zoe puppet, and sure enough, Telly freaked out.

Merry Christmas, Miss Foster! Part One
A/N: For Lokane Week, I am resurrecting the Miss Foster series!
Well sort of. The next official part of the series has been half written for... some time now. I’m working on it, but there’s a lot of other stuff going on. You know how it goes.
For those unfamiliar, the Miss Foster series is an all human AU in which Jane is a second grade teacher who ends up with Loki’s three children in his class. Said kids are a bit too smart for their ages and decide Jane is exactly the kind of person their billionaire single father needs. And since there are LOKI’S children we’re talking about, they get into some wacky hijinks along the way.
This story is honestly in kind of a grey area in terms of continuity. It’s sort of like an anime movie where the timeline isn’t clear and it’s kind of just contained within itself. Semi-canon so to speak.
Regardless, whether you know this verse or not, I hope you all enjoy and I’ll see you again tomorrow!
**
The Odinson family had a log cabin nestled on a hilltop in the heart of Lake Placid. The only thing that shocked Jane was that it wasn’t three stories.
Snow was freshly fallen, just in time for the holidays. The sky was bright white, clouds masking the sun in preparation of another wintery onslaught. Riding in the back of a limousine, Jane flipped through several hundred stations, almost all of which were playing the same old Christmas music she knew by heart. Some of them were her favorite songs of all time. Many others she’d happily tear her eardrums out before she listened to them again.
At least the roads were clear, at least for now. The forecast called for clear skies until the 20th, when Jack Frost descended to unleash the full force of his icy fury upon the unsuspecting New York populace. Or so the weatherman rather hammily declared.
Which begged the question: why did Loki want to spend Christmas in the middle of the woods?
Another question: why did Jane agree to go with them?
It was the kids. She needed to face facts and admit to herself that for all her posturing and assertion of authority as their teacher, those three little angels wielded the power of the puppy dog eyes, and they were not afraid to use it.
“We bought this cabin from an old man who used it as a hunting lodge,” said Jormungandr. He flipped through the book in his lap. As always, it was roughly the size of his entire body. “He used to come out here with his two sons during deer season. Then one of them moved away and the other decided to be a vegan. Now he’s in Florida with his wife. He said the weather would do wonders for his aching joints.”
“I’m surprised you remember all that,” Jane mumbled.
“Dad’s offer nearly gave him a heart attack,” said Fenrir, stretching out in his seat like he was desperate to move. “His asking price was way lower.”
“But it was worth the money,” Hela proclaimed, beaming so hard her entire face glowed. Even the scars were less apparent. “And we fixed it up real nice. We go out and chop down a giant tree, and we decorate it and we put up lights and-”
“We don’t need a play-by-play,” Fenrir snapped, shoving his sister. “And quit yelling in my ear.”
“I wasn’t yelling!” Hela yelled. “Maybe you just need to clean your ears out.”
“Maybe you do!”
“Do not.”
“Do too!”
“See?” Jormungandr smiled. “Not even any hair-pulling. They’re already in the holiday spirit.”
“They most certainly are,” said Loki.
He drove over a rough patch in the road, the tires grinding through the rocks and making the inside jostle. Jane held tight to the dashboard until the road smoothed out. As expected, Loki had no reaction to it at all. He guided the car along the dirt path like he’d been doing it all his life. Like maybe he came out every summer to hunt deer now. Jane tried to picture him in a plaid shirt with a vest over it and a hunter’s cap. She wished she could laugh at the ridiculous idea, but like everything else the asshole wore, the idea just made her cheeks warm.
The mountains were lovely, she couldn’t deny that. Swathes of fir trees and a pure white sky gave the jagged cliff sides that picturesque quality Thomas Kinkade painting were made for. In fact, Jane was pretty sure she had seen these mountains in one of his greeting cards. Maybe Loki owned land around the cabin and licensed it out. For all she knew, they filmed Hallmark movies out here. Hell, maybe she was about to star in her own Hallmark movie.
Rich, handsome single father locked in a cabin for a week with his children’s second grade teacher. It practically wrote itself.
“What’s funny?” Loki asked.
Jane started. “Huh? I wasn’t laughing.”
“But you were smiling.”
“Smiling doesn’t mean something is funny,” Jane sat up straighter in her seat, “I might just like to smile.”
“Like Buddy the Elf?”
“Yes, exactly. Thank you, Hela.”
The little girl beamed, her lips lined with chocolate as she reached for the bowl of M&Ms. “Maybe we can watch it tomorrow. Tonight is The Muppet Christmas Carol.”
“Since when do you get to decide what movie we watch?” Fenrir snatched the M&Ms away. “I want to watch Die Hard.”
“Die Hard is for the 26th, Fenrir,” Hela retorted.
“Guys, come on,” Jane said, adjusting the rear view mirror to see them better. “We can decide when we get there what to watch. And don’t eat all of those. You’re going to get sick.”
“Don’t worry, they’re sugar free,” said Fenrir. “Otherwise, we’d have Jormungandr tied up in the trunk so he can’t get at them.”
“I can hear you, you know,” Jormungandr said, slamming his book shut.
“Welcome to the Odinson family Christmas,” he muttered in her ear. “Are you happy you said yes?”
Jane stared out the window as another pile of rocks whizzed by. “I’ll let you know.”
The car crawled higher and higher up the hillside. Every time Jane thought she saw a wooden roof in the distance, Loki turned a new corner. The town below had long since vanished. She wondered if they’d ever see it again. Someone had turned the radio on. The children sang along to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, their off-key but passionate interpretation earning applause from Jane and a smile from Loki.
By the time the shadow of a slanted roof came into view, they’d gone through Christmastime Is Here and that Alvin and the Chipmunks song. Now the music faded into the background as Jane beheld a palace of a cabin in the woods. Polished wood with a stone chimney. A covered patio and an observation deck overlooking the trees. In the back was a small structure, possibly a shed or even an indoor jacuzzi. Jane had learned never to assume with this family, and always expect the unexpected.
“By the way, our basement pool is currently closed,” Loki said as they pulled into the driveway. “We’re having issues with the heating system, but someone will be out to fix it shortly.”
“Great. I didn’t even pack a suit…”
The cold smacked Jane in the face as soon as she was out of the car. Looking around, there were ice patches everywhere. Some had been dissolved with rocksalt, but what remained made the front lawn resemble a minefield. It was a sentiment not shared by the kids, who raced to the front porch, cheering all the way.
“We’re going to have so much fun!” Jormungandr hopped in place. “We’re going to put up the tree and sing Christmas carols and bake cookies and wrap presents and build snowmen and-”
“Are you sure those M&Ms were sugar free?” Fenrir asked Hela, who shrugged.
“Now now, children,” Loki chided them, “remember we’re not alone this year. Grandmother, Grandfather, Uncle Thor, and Aunt Sif will be along in just a few days. We want to kept this place clean and presentable for them, don’t we?”
“Yes, Dad,” the triplets said. They walked up the stairs, speaking softly, and didn’t start screaming again until they were safely inside.
“A whole week out here,” Jane said, taking in the crisp mountain air. “Here I thought I’d just spend Christmas with a bowl of cereal again.”
“It won’t be that much of a change of scenery,” Loki said as the second car trailing behind them finally caught up. Out stepped a man glaring daggers at Loki. Luckily, Jane had convinced him not to actually bring any weapons. “I was nice enough to invite your dear brother along.”
“Yeah, you’re a saint, pal,” Bucky said, pushing past him. He managed to smile at Jane. Not even Loki’s presence could completely dampen his mood.
“Whoo! That was a hell of a ride!” Bucky’s passenger proclaimed, stumbling out of the car.
Loki sniffed. “And your… Darcy.”
Jane nodded. “Yeah, that was real nice of you.”
“You guys are lucky I couldn’t afford to go home this year,” Darcy said, flashing them a thumbs up. “By the way, I brought my own Menorah. Any place in there I can put it up?”
“The mantle should do nicely,” Loki said. “Just don’t touch anything.”
“I will do my best to respect your humble abode, Major Moneybags!” Darcy skipped along, leaving the pair, finally, completely alone.
“She needs to think up some more creative nicknames,” Loki observed, hand on his chin. “Why does she follow you everywhere?”
“Well, when I first moved into my apartment, she came over to ask if I had one of those whipped cream makers,” Jane sighed, “and then she just kind of never left.”
Loki hummed, and with that, they started for the porch. Luck, as it turned out, was on Jane’s side. She made it a full three steps before she slipped. With a yelp, she grabbed blindly for the nearest sturdy object. She hung on tight as her eyes unclouded and her mind reoriented itself. It was only then that rough leathery material in her hand shifted. Loki raised his arm, pulling Jane with him. She continued to cling to him, blinking stupidly at his chiselled features. It hit her all too late that they probably shouldn’t be doing this.
“Uh…” Jane said, stepping away and almost slipping again. “Thanks. Sorry.”
Loki pocketed his hands and glided across the ice patches, like he controlled them as much as he did everything else in his life. “Do be more careful next time.”
“Right.” Jane shuffled after her, head bowed, face boiling.
This was going to be a long Christmas.

Do you have some headcanons for the weasel babes?
I sure do!
Now my AU’s do blend through the years and it’s a mix of canon and ‘I am ignoring canon because it’s stupid’ but here it goes;
They’re actors, just like anyone else. Their first and last role were as the weasels in ‘Wind in the Willows’. Now canonically this would be AFTER the events of the movie, however there is also the original book we can borrow from which was set in the 80′s which makes this headcanon totally possible and please hear me out in this; they were typecast as bad guys and NEVER were able to shake that off, meaning they had to resort to doing some other job. The way they look didn’t help them. Having sharp teeth and claws and all that. Especially since most cartoons required a more approachable design like Roger, Mickey or Bugs. Some of them got some odd jobs but it was always playing a villain or very very minor part. (Prince and the Pauper, Some Goofy Shorts, A Christmas Carol).
They started the Patrol because they are by far the most organised of all toons, which is a accomplishment in on itself and they are with more than the movie shows.
Which is why they had no issue with Doom’s plans to wipe out Toon Town. They hold a strong grudge agains their fellow Toons for letting the bad guy thing happen (more on that later). And it’s not like other Toons make their work easy, you know them being toons and all and the Patrol trying to have some sort of justice in place for a basically lawless place.
Second, for Roger I like a mix between his movie portrayal and his book portrayal. I do want to believe he’s a genuinely nice guy, however no one is nice ALL the time. He, Greasy and Smarty used to be friends who would hang out on the regular but then fame came around, the Weasels were branded as unemployable and they kinda drifted apart. That’s why Roger is double scared of them because he knows they can hold a grudge like no other and they probably didn’t forget that he bailed on them.
The Toon Patrol is mostly American, except Wheezy who I headcanon as being Scottish. He moved to the States due to the European movie scene being too small at the time.
Psycho is the way he is because he spends a lot of time in the back of the van with the dip and isn’t smart enough to not inhale the fumes.
I also headcanon them as NOT dead by the end of the movie, just resting. Just like the second new Muppet movie it’s entirely possible for the Who Framed Roger Rabbit movie to be.. well a movie, how does that impact the Patrol, see my first point. They merely did a cameo for their old pal and were treated like dirt after.
All of them DO have a criminal record, but it was out of desperation, mostly it’s theft and other small crimes. Why? Well, they got to eat and without a proper job or after they formed their Patrol, someone willing to sell to them they resorted to stealing.
Psycho, Smarty and the comic only Sleazy are brothers, Smarty being the oldest, Sleazy second and Psycho is the youngest. I have another theory with a fourth brother but only if you guys are willing to lend me your ear.
Age wise; Wheezy is the oldest, Smarty comes second, third is Greasy then Stupid and Psycho is the youngest.
I got looooaaaadssss more but I don’t want to spam walls of text either, let me know if you want more! And thank you so much for sending it in!

The 4th Annual Losers’ Club Christmakkah Celebration 2/2
Summary: The Losers gather for their fourth annual Christmakkah celebration, and this time Richie and Eddie get a Christmakkah surprise.
Word Count: 3240-ish for part 2. (LOL each story got progressively longer)
Warnings: Usual Trashmouth swearing.
Author’s Note: Post-Chapter 2. All of the Losers are alive in this fic, including Stan, because canon can suck it. Final part in the series, unless I get some other ideas. Part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, beginning of 4th part here.
CROSS-POSTED AT AO3.
The next three weeks flew by and before Richie knew it, the day before Christmakkah had arrived.
Earlier that day he and Eddie had finished setting up the baby's room, hung the stockings they had monogrammed with each of the Losers & Jr. Losers' names on the fireplace, and pre-made a broccoli-rice casserole and 4 different kinds of pie.
He, Bill, Stan, Patty, Bev, Ben, and Mike were all sitting in the living room, watching Olivia and Burke play with some toy cars when the doorbell rang.
"That must be Bill & Audra," Richie said. "I'll get it."
He walked over to the door and opened it. "Hey guys," he greeted Bill and Audra before scooping Max up in a hug. "Max-a-million, how are you, little dude?"
Max squished Richie's cheeks together with his tiny hands. "Fishy!"
Richie immediately sucked his cheeks in to make fish faces at Max, who giggled.
"Come on in," Richie said before calling out towards the kitchen, "babe, Bill and Audra are here!"
"Coming!" Eddie replied. "Just gotta get these pies out of the oven!"
"Eds insisted on making the pies himself," Richie explained. "No store-bought pies for him."
"You don't know what kind of artificial crap they put in the fillings," Eddie said with a huff as he joined them in the foyer. "Homemade just tastes better."
"My own little Betty Crocker," Richie joked.
"Unca Ed!" Max screeched happily, reaching his little hands out to Eddie.
"Hey guys," Eddie greeted Bill & Audra before taking Max from Richie. "And hey there, Max! How are you, buddy?"
Richie grinned. It always warmed his heart to see how great Eddie was with kids. He wasn't even jealous that Eddie was Max's favorite uncle -- especially since Richie was Olivia's, much to Stan's consternation.
"Burke and Olivia are here, you want to go play with them?"
"Yeah!" Max clapped his hands.
"Sorry we're late," Audra said. "Max took a longer nap than anticipated today."
"It's fine," Richie replied. "We're all just sitting around and are just gonna order something in for dinner tonight anyway."
"We went ahead and brought the gifts over tonight so we wouldn't have as much to bring tomorrow," Bill said. "Richie, you wanna help me bring them in?"
"Yeah, sure man."
Richie and Bill walked out to Bill's car, each grabbing a box full of gifts and bringing them in.
"Hey, everyone," Bill greeted.
"So, Richie, Eddie was telling us you guys finished the baby's room," Audra said as Richie set his box of gifts down next to the tree.
"Yeah, we finished painting last week and got most of his decorations up, and the furniture was delivered yesterday," Eddie replied. "Which is good, because we wanted to finish the room before the holidays since we're going to be busy until after the new year."
"You guys went with a sea life motif, right?" Patty asked.
"Yeah, Richie actually found this cute crib set with a bunch of turtles on it, so we centered the theme around that."
"Have you decided on a name?" Bev chimed in. "I want to get something monogrammed for him."
Richie huffed out a laugh as Eddie narrowed his eyes at him. "We're still discussing it."
Eddie scoffed. "Only because someone keeps insisting that we name him Edison!"
"Well excuse me if I want to name my son after the love of my life--"
"OHHHHKAY!" Stan interrupted. "So still working on that, gotcha. Well, now that Bill and Audra are here, how about we order some dinner? It was a long flight and I'm starving."
********************************************************************
After dinner, Richie put on A Muppet Christmas Carol for the kids to watch while the adults sat and talked.
He got up from where he had been snuggled against Eddie. "I'll be right back."
"Okay," Eddie replied.
Richie walked into the kitchen when Eddie's phone, which had been sitting on the counter, suddenly started to ring.
Without even looking at the caller ID Richie answered. "Y'ello?"
"Yes, is this Mr. Edward Kaspbrak-Tozier?" the voice on the other end replied.
"This is his husband, can I help you?"
"Oh yes…" She paused as if checking something. "Richard?"
"Yep, what can I do you for?"
"My name is Monica, I'm from the Los Angeles Center for Women. You're listed as the contacts for a Sarah Peters?"
"Yeah, she's our surrogate."
"Mr. Kaspbrak-Tozier, I'm calling to inform you that she's been admitted to the hospital in labor--"
"We'll be right there," Richie said then immediately hung up.
"EDDIE!" he yelled as he ran into the living room. "Sarah's in labor. Hospital. Now. Gotta go."
Eddie looked up at Richie in surprise then jumped up. "Ok, ok, you get the hospital bag, I'll go start the car."
Richie ran upstairs and grabbed the bag they had packed for the hospital, silently praising his husband's tendency to prepare weeks in advance.
He ran downstairs to find all the Losers gathering Eddie in a hug.
Ben pulled him into the group embrace. "Go welcome your son, guys."
"Let us know when he arrives, no matter what time it is," Stan added.
"We've got things handled here," chimed in Bev.
Richie sniffled. "Thanks, guys."
He and Eddie made their way to Eddie's Acura RDX. Not only had Richie insisted that they take his vehicle over Richie's Mustang because of course Eddie had bought the SUV with the highest safety rating, but Eddie also had a built-in knack for being able to avoid traffic on the freeway by taking back roads, so it made the most sense for him to drive.
Plus Richie was too nervous to drive, but he wouldn't admit that.
He ran a hand through his hair. "Sarah's not due for another two weeks, how the hell can she be in labor now?"
Eddie glanced over at Richie as he pulled out of their neighborhood. "Pregnancy isn't an exact science, Rich. It's all about estimated dates and whatnot."
"Holy shit, holy shit, we're about to have a kid, Eddie." He huffed out a breath. "A living, breathing human that we'll have to take care of and raise."
Eddie reached over and grabbed Richie's hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "You'll be a great dad, Richie."
They made it to the hospital in record time, Eddie throwing the car into park and grabbing the bag before he and Richie ran into the hospital.
The nurse at the reception desk looked up at them. "Yes, may I help you?"
"Yes, we're here for Sarah Peters, she was admitted a while ago? She's our surrogate," Eddie explained. "We're Edward and Richard Kaspbrak-Tozier."
The nurse typed a few keys on her keyboard. "Ahh, yes, she's in room 226. Go around to this left side and take the elevator to the 2nd floor, you'll find Labor & Delivery. Someone will check you in."
Richie and Eddie made their way to the second floor, getting passes at the Labor & Delivery reception desk.
Eddie gently knocked on the door to Sarah's room, hearing a 'come in' before opening the door.
Richie followed behind.
Sarah sat in a hospital bed, IV in her arm and heart monitor wrapped around her stomach. She smiled when she saw them. "Hey guys, you made it."
"Hey, Sarah, how are you feeling?" Eddie asked, moving to look at the monitors. "Richie hung up on the nurse before he asked any questions."
Richie listened as Sarah explained what had happened -- she was at her sister's house when her water broke, so her sister had driven her to the hospital and would be with her while she gave birth. "Apparently it's going to be a while, so she went downstairs to get something to eat and will be back in a bit."
A few minutes into their visit, a nurse came into the room. She stopped when she saw Eddie. "Eddie? Oh my gosh, it's so good to see you! What are you doing here?" she said with surprise and glee.
"This is my baby-- Well, my husband's and my baby," Eddie explained. "Sarah's our surrogate."
He turned to Richie. "Rich, this is Nikki, remember I told you about her? We were in nursing school together."
"Oh yeah, I remember you mentioning her. Hi," Richie said.
"Oh my gosh, you must be Eddie's husband! He's told me so much about you. Congratulations!"
"Thanks. We're very excited."
"I bet!"
Richie sort of tuned out while Nikki explained more in detail about Sarah's progression. "Ok, I'll be back in a bit to check on you, ok? Congrats again, Eddie. Richie, nice to finally meet you!"
"You too."
Shortly after Nikki left Sarah's sister, Beth, came back. "Hi, you must be Richie and Eddie. It's so nice to finally meet you two. Sarah's talked about you guys a lot."
"Thanks," Richie replied. "Nice to meet you too."
They stayed with Sarah for a few hours, stepping out of the room around 11 PM when the doctor decided to let Sarah get some rest since she hadn't progressed much.
They walked to the labor & delivery waiting area and found a couple of seats in a quiet corner.
"Um, so I guess we need to actually decide on a name," Richie said once they got settled. "I was looking online this morning and I think I found one we can both agree on."
Richie told Eddie his name choice and nervously chewed his lip while Eddie mulled it over.
Finally, Eddie nodded. "Ok. But I choose his middle name, no arguments."
Richie smiled. "Okay."
*********************************
Shortly after 6 AM, Richie was abruptly shaken awake from a doze. "Whazzat?" he mumbled.
Eddie was kneeling in front of Richie, holding 2 cups of coffee. "Rich, honey, it's time. Sarah's about to start pushing."
Richie sat straight up. "She is?"
Eddie grinned. "Yep." He handed Richie one of the cups. "Here, I went downstairs to the coffee shop."
Richie gratefully took the cup. "Oh, bless you. You're an angel, Eds."
Eddie stood up and took his seat next to Richie, linking the fingers of his free hand with Richie's. "Just think, we'll get to meet our son soon."
Richie beamed at the thought. "Still okay with the name we chose?"
Eddie nodded. "It's perfect."
About 10 minutes later, Nikki came into the waiting room and walked straight towards them. Richie and Eddie both stood when they saw her. "Is he here?" Eddie asked.
Nikki broke into a grin. "Yep, he's here!"
"Can we see him yet? How's Sarah doing?"
"Give it about 20 minutes while we finish cleaning the baby up and getting his vitals, but both he and Sarah are fine."
Eddie nodded. "Okay, just please let us know when we're able to go see him."
"Sure will. Congrats again on your baby boy, guys!"
Once Nikki had left, Eddie pulled their bag out from under his chair. "I'm gonna go clean up a bit and brush my teeth before we go see the baby. I'll be right back."
"Ok," Richie replied. "I'll let everyone know that the baby is here."
With shaking hands, he sent out a text to the Losers group chat. Guys, he's here. Eddie and I have a son!
Stan, who was usually up early even when he wasn't 2 time zones away from his norm, was the first to reply. Congratulations, guys. We'll all swing by once everyone's awake.
Ok, sounds good, Richie replied.
Eddie came back pretty quickly, so Richie grabbed his toothbrush and went to clean up as well. Not long after he came back, Nikki came back into the waiting room. "Ok, Dads, you guys ready?"
Richie grabbed Eddie's hand and gave it a squeeze. They followed Nikki back to the room Sarah and the baby had been moved to, where Sarah was holding a tiny bundle.
Sarah gave them an exhausted, but soft, smile. "Hey guys, come meet your son."
The second Richie laid eyes on him he burst into tears.
Eddie, whose eyes were also glistening, wrapped an arm around Richie as they peered at their child.
Sarah held the baby out. "Want to hold him?"
"Rich? You want to hold him first?" Eddie asked.
"No, you go ahead," Richie sniffled. "I'm so shaky right now that I'm afraid I'd drop him."
Eddie gently took the baby, who made a displeased noise at being disturbed.
Richie gave a watery laugh and looked over Eddie's shoulder. "Aww Eds, he's just like you -- small and angry."
Eddie gave him a fond glare as he gently rocked the baby.
"So did you guys pick a name?" Sarah asked.
Richie and Eddie looked at each other before Eddie smiled and nodded. "Yeah, we did."
Sarah grinned at the name. "Aww, that's perfect."
Eddie turned back to Richie. "Rich? You ready to hold him?"
Richie, who had calmed down somewhat, nodded. "Yeah, I'm ready."
Eddie passed the baby to him. "Here you go, sweetheart."
Richie held back a gasp as the baby's eyes blinked open and he gave a tiny yawn. "Look, he's looking at me! Well hello there," he cooed. "Oh my God, I love you already."
He sat down next to Eddie on the couch. "Here, let me take your picture with him," Beth, who had been sitting in the chair next to Sarah's bed, offered.
Eddie handed her his phone and scooted closer to Richie, wrapping one arm around Richie's shoulder and placing the other on Richie's leg.
Richie moved his arms so the baby's face would be in the picture and tilted his head next to Eddie's. "Our first family photo," he murmured.
Beth took several pictures -- one of Richie and Eddie looking at the camera, one of them looking at each other over the baby, and another of them both looking at the baby.
She had just handed Eddie his phone back when Richie felt his vibrate in his pocket.
"Everyone's awake," Eddie reported. "Bill wants to know if they can come meet the baby."
Richie chuckled. "Sarah? You up for our crazy family to come by?"
Sarah nodded. "Yeah, actually I'm feeling pretty good right now. I got a good bit of sleep before the baby came."
Richie watched as Eddie texted back an affirmative and the room number.
"Ok, they'll be here in about an hour. Just gotta finish getting the kids dressed and wait for Bill and Audra to pick them up."
"In that case, I'm going to run home for a bit, shower and change," Beth said. "I'll be back."
While they were waiting for the Losers to arrive, the hospital administrator came by to have the necessary paperwork regarding the baby's birth filled out. All of the paperwork regarding the surrogacy and parental rights had already been completed, so Eddie filled out the form for the baby's birth certificate, listing himself and Richie as the baby's parents. "There, now you're officially a Kaspbrak-Tozier, aren't you?" Richie cooed to his son.
He had just handed the baby back to Eddie when there was a knock on the door. Mike's head poked in. "Hi, can we come in?"
"Mike, hey, yeah," Eddie replied. "Come on in."
One by one, the Losers and their offspring filed in.
Olivia ran over to Richie and plopped a small blue giraffe in his lap. "Unca Ichie, we 'bought a 'raffe!" she said.
"You did?" Richie said with faux surprise. "Is that for the baby?"
Olivia nodded.
"Aww well thank you, I'm sure he's going to love it."
"This is Sarah, our surrogate," Eddie gestured toward Sarah with an elbow. "Sarah, this is our rather unconventional family."
"Hi," Sarah said. "It's nice to meet you all."
The Losers all greeted Sarah, inquiring about her well-being before turning their attention to the baby.
"Everyone," Eddie said with a smile, "meet Edwin Richard Kaspbrak-Tozier."
Richie grinned at the collective 'aww' sounds all the adults were making.
"I absolutely love his name, guys," Beverly added then grinned. "Now gimmie my nephew."
Eddie laughed and handed him over, letting Beverly sit.
"Oh my goodness, he's adorable." Beverly looked over at Sarah. "I just want to tell you thank you. You have no idea how much we all appreciate what you've done for Richie and Eddie."
Sarah nodded. "My parents had me via a surrogate, so this is my way of paying it forward."
After everyone had a brief turn to hold Edwin, they gave Richie and Eddie hugs and filed back out silently, careful not to wake Sarah, who had fallen asleep not long before.
"By the way, happy anniversary, you two," Audra whispered as she handed Edwin back to Richie. "Looks like you guys got the ultimate anniversary gift."
She gave Richie and Eddie each a kiss on the cheek, gave Edwin one last touch on his hand, and bade them goodbye before leaving.
Richie adjusted Edwin in order to cradle him in his other arm. "Shit, Eds, in all the excitement about the baby arriving I forgot to tell you you happy anniversary. I was gonna surprise you with breakfast in bed this morning."
Eddie shrugged. "I don't know about you, but to be honest this is way better than anything I had planned in order to celebrate our first anniversary."
Richie couldn't help but smile as he looked down at his and Eddie's child. "Yeah, it really is, isn't it? Audra was right. We really did receive the ultimate anniversary gift today."
Eddie leaned in and gave Richie a sweet kiss. "Happy anniversary, Rich."
"Happy anniversary, Eds."
****************
Richie and Eddie both had cried when they arrived home with Edwin the day after Christmas and saw that everyone's gifts were still under the tree and a freshly-prepared Christmakkah dinner was on the table.
"You guys waited for us?" Eddie sniffled.
"Well, yeah," Ben had replied. "It's not Christmakkah without you guys -- and now Edwin too, of course."
They had eaten, Bill and Mike insisting on taking care of cleanup since the other, 'culinarily capable' adults had taken care of the cooking. "Nope," Bill had said when Eddie protested their refusal for help. "You guys were such a huge help when Audra and I came home from the hospital with Max. The least we can do is repay the favor."
Afterward, when everyone had gathered in the living room to open gifts, Richie had been surprised to see an extra pile of presents next to his and Eddie's.
"You guys all got Edwin something?" he said in awe.
"Of course," Stan had replied as if it were obvious. "Can't let our nephew celebrate his first Christmakkah without gifts."
Now one week later, all the Losers had gone back to their respective lives until the next family gathering in March for Max's birthday.
Richie and Eddie sat quietly on the sofa together, Richie's arm around Eddie's shoulder and Edwin fast asleep in Eddie's arms after his early-evening bottle.
As Eddie snuggled against Richie's side and they both watched Edwin sleep peacefully, Richie reflected on just how complete his life was with his husband and their son. "I love you so much, Eddie," he murmured, turning his head to press a kiss to Eddie's temple. "I'm so lucky that I get to live this life with you."
"I love you too, Richie," Eddie replied. "There's no one else I'd rather spend my life with."
If Richie sent up a prayer of thanks to a magical turtle later that night while his husband and son slumbered near him, well, that would be his secret.

Happy Christmas
Since @tagsecretsanta works so hard to arrange our secret santa exchange, I thought it was time they got something in return.
So, as with the rest of us they gave me three prompts and the one I choose was ‘Scott and Virgil and kids at Christmas’ so here you go - Merry Christmas and thank you @tagsecretsanta
“Would you want one of these, one day?” Virgil asked.
Scott peered at him in the dim light. Though only sitting against the opposite wall, Virgil’s features were difficult to make out. Scott gave a one shouldered shrug in response, being careful not to disturb anyone.
“Weird.” Said Virgil “I always thought you would make a great dad.”
They had been trapped in this room for nearly eight hours now. A combination of high winds and acid rain had meant it wasn’t safe to take off. The flash flood made it impossible to leave the room. Damage to this mining complex’s communications array made Thunderbird Five indecipherable due to static, at least until the storm passed. It had been a crazy day, not the normal Tuesday.
The only place to seek refuge had been this cramped supply closet. Okay it was large as supply closets went, but still far too small for six people, even small people. Far from the best place to spend the night, let alone this particular night.
“I haven’t really thought about it.” lied Scott.
“Sure.” Scoffed Virgil.
It would have been alright if it was just the two of them - well not alright: it was always tough to be on a callout on the important days – but they could manage. It came with the job and no-one took a missed birthday or anniversary personally. It was the kids that Scott felt sorry for.
They had managed to evacuate all of the miners before the storm swept in, but the children had been holed up in their school room across the camp. Scott and Virgil had barely made it to them before the weather got too bad and there was no way to get them out.
To their credit they had been very brave: comforted by the soothing tones of confident adults who never let their own fear show. Virgil and Scott had been hard pressed to distract them though.
Tonight they should have been in the main compound with their families, putting the finishing touches to the Christmas tree. They should have put out stockings and a plate of mince pies for Santa (plus carrots for the reindeer). There should have been hot chocolate while wrapped in blankets and watching The Muppets Christmas Carol.
That was Christmas Eve, not this: stuck in their school store room with two strangers.
When Scott and Virgil realised they were going to be taking up temporary residence they set to wearing out the four energetic ten-year-olds as quickly as possible. They raided the school supplies without compunction and the room was now full of pictures, Christmas lists, paper chains, garlands, paper snowflakes and origami stars. They used every craft and game in their arsenal to fill the time and stop them all dwelling on what a shit Christmas Eve this had turned out to be.
When the wind had picked up further Scot and Virgil had told the children that it would be most fun –meaning safe – to camp in this small room with no windows. Now they were both trapped with one child sleeping on each side using their legs as a pillow, blankets wrapped tight. Scott couldn’t blame them for taking what comfort they could despite the absence of their parents.
“What?”
“You’re Scott Tracy, you plan everything. Of course you’ve at least considered it.” Virgil said.
Scott frowned. “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with being prepared and I seldom hear you complaining when I’ve bought along just he piece of gear we need.”
“Then what do you think?” Virgil nodded at the forms sleeping on them. “Do you want a family of your own?”
“Well, in theory yes, but practically is a whole different ball game.”
“Why?”
“For one thing we are spending Christmas Eve holed up half way around the world from home, and will do to well into Christmas Day. It takes a pretty special person to be prepared to put up with that sort of crap.”
“Special people do exist though.” Virgil countered, ever the optimist.
“Sure, but first I have to find them, and to find them I have to talk to more than just people I happen to be rescuing at that moment.”
“So take a day off. Go to a club – I’d make a great wingman.”
“That’s not really my scene.” Scott scrunched up his face in distaste.
“Stop seeing problems! We’re solutions people.”
Scott gave a deep sigh.
“I don’t think I could do that to someone, do that to those hypothetical kids.”
“Do what?” Virgil asked.
“Make them sit and wait every time. We get a taste of it sure, but for every mission, every rescue, they would be sitting at home wondering if this was the time that we were too daring. If this time the problem was too big. If this time someone wasn’t coming home.”
Scott had often wondered if they would be in this line of work if Mom were still alive. Would she be sitting at home right now, checking and rechecking the equipment, waiting anxiously for them to get back in touch? Maybe she would be pacing – she was always full of energy so Scott didn’t know if she could sit and wait. Or maybe she was doing something – cleaning, cooking, painting – anything to fill her hands while her thoughts were far away.
“Or they could be sitting there thinking how proud they are.” Virgil was saying. “I’m not going to say I’m not worried when one of you guys is out there without me, it makes me feel sick I’m so scared for you. But that’s nothing compared to the look on people’s faces when we get them out of trouble. Think of what these guys parents are going to look like when we get out of here.”
“Yeah, that’s the reason I do it, but that’s not good enough to put someone else through it.” Scott told him.
“Thing is Scott, you don’t necessarily get to make that choice for someone. If I manage to get you off the island long enough to run into this special person you don’t get to decide how much they can cope with.”
Scott thought about that, really thought about what it would be like to raise children on the island. They’d learn to walk along the beaches. He would need to put in guard rails around the pool until Gordon taught them to swim. Maybe John could home school them for a bit - because he was by far the best teacher – just until they were old enough to spend some time away. Not that he would want them to go to boarding school as such but they didn’t exactly live in any school’s catchment area and he would want them to have meet other kids. He would teach them to fly, of course, in one of the light aircraft they kept for when a Thunderbird would be overkill. They’d spend time baking with Grandma and drawing pictures of the rain forest. Kayo would tell them stories about hero’s and villains, Virgil teach them the piano, Alan would game with them and Brains would probably make a robotic pet.
In all his musing – now or before – it never occurred to Scott that neither he nor his family would be living anywhere but the island.
“I’ll tell you one thing, no child of mine will be joining International Rescue.” Scott said gruffly.
Virgil laughed, being sure to keep it low and quiet. “That will be another thing that you don’t get to decide. But I’m glad we’ve moved on from ‘it’ll never happen’ though.”
Maybe Mom wouldn’t have been waiting at home. Maybe she would have been out with them. She never once asked someone else for a favour she wasn’t prepared to do in return: maybe this would have been no different. Part of Scott knew that his memories were coloured through the lenses of childhood, time and the firm belief that he had the best Mom ever. But the other part believed that his Mom would be as fearless in the face of natural disasters as she was fighting for the last of that year’s must-have toy.
Yeah, his Mom would have made a great Thunderbird pilot. Scott felt a smile spread across his face at the thought. Virgil looked puzzled, not knowing where Scott’s musings had taken him.
“What about you? See a family in your future?” Scott asked his little brother.
“Yep.” Virgil grinned. “A whole football team’s worth.”
“And maybe that’s something you don’t get to decide” Scott chuckled.
“Probably.” Virgil agreed without any less humour.
“Then maybe we should go out together at some point – meet some people who aren’t scared to death for a change.”
Before Virgil could answer a high pitched beep started to emanate from Scott’s wrist. He moved to silence it as quickly as he could, but one of the children still woke slightly, muttered, and then snuggled in closer.
It was always a challenge to keep up with who was in which time zone. John could tell you who had recently eaten, who had slept or who was three days younger than they should be because they’d crossed the International Date Line too often without even looking up from his coffee. Scott couldn’t do any of those things and had a hard time keeping straight where was day and where was night, so he kept his watch set to island time – a small anchor to home.
The beep could only mean one thing – back on a small friendly island in the middle of a large uncaring ocean it was midnight. It was Christmas day.
Everyone might be fast asleep right now, the turning of the day going unnoticed. As Thunderbird Two was still mid-mission they were probably still awake and exchanging the first greeting and hugs of the day, John giving his virtually for now. Scott wasn’t about to let thousands of miles get in the way of joining in.
“Happy Christmas Virgil. Not how I wanted to start the day.”
“Happy Christmas Scott. Be neither, but ” Virgil looked down fondly at the sleeping forms that were pinning him down. “It could be worse.”

It's been such a nice Christmas Eve. I finally felt like I was actually on vacation. For the most part. I don't have to be anywhere or do anything that I didn't want to do. We can just move slowly.
I slept well last night. I woke up a couple times but mostly just cuz I was thirsty. I got up at 9 and I felt okay. Got washed and dressed. And then I hung out my room until mom was ready at 10.
We went to Friendly's for breakfast. Turns out from this Monday through Thursday during breakfast is always 50% off. So our entire meal was $12. That was cool. It was nice just hanging out too. Talking and laughing. It was good.
We went over to Sally Beauty First. I picked up hair dye. I'm going for a more red purple look this time. I'm going to do that tomorrow night. We left there and try to wander over to Habitat for Humanity but they were closed on Mondays. Oh well. We got back in the car and we went over to the Goodwill. We had very good luck there.
I got a great new blanket. Because that's what I needed in my life. I also got another pair of clogs which have break in the heel but still very comfortable. I'm going to have to fuss with them a little bit but very cute. We looked through all the stuffed animals to try to find three similarly-sized bears to get to Steve's kids. We actually found three Build-A-Bears. But the one was kind of dingy so we switched out for a pink bear. I also found a stuffed animal for sleepy and had a fun time looking around. I got a couple small things. A new sweater and I'm going to work at the Christmas party on Friday. And I got a cast iron heart baking tray. I grabbed a couple things and put them back. But mostly I just had a good time looking around and taking pictures of things and laughing at stuff with Mom.
We went over to the other side of the parking lot to go to Target. I got some of the home good stuff I needed. I wanted to find a new cup to replace the one I had smashed the other day. And the one I got I really like. It's silver. And it has a weird neon green or yellow straw. That's probably my least favorite part but it's leak-proof and it's the same brand and if I drop it it will not explode. And worst case I can paint the neon parts. It's not the worst.
We were going to also get groceries while we were there but they were short on a couple things that I wanted so we left and we went to Redner's.
I was running out of steam but we got the groceries we needed. I got some laughs from some of the others customer it's because I kept throwing things in the cart from too far away. We paid and we headed home.
When we got back here we unpacked and then I spent the next hour and a half working on lesson plans. I could not for the life of me remember where the list of terms they need to learn our. So I was very annoyed with myself. But I did get the first 4 weeks kind of mapped out. The lesson plans aren't exactly done but they're on their way. I will for sure finish at least some more of that tomorrow. And then I'll start a couple more. I would like to get the six done before the end of the week.
Around 3 I went to my room and lay down for a bit. I didn't nap but I did watch some videos and play on my phone. At 4:30 everyone started getting dressed and we got out of here pretty quickly relatively speaking.
Dad made a reservation at Bonefish Grill. I have never been but the men you didn't really seem promising. At least vegetarian wise. But I kind of just wanted a salad. So it worked out for me. We went and it was really really nice.
We all eat too much bread. Dad spilled olive oil all over the table. I got a Cobb salad that has avocado and kale and it was very good. That also got an appetizer that I ate the lettuce for an appetizer that was good too. Food was really good and it was nice talking to my parents. My brother texted me while we were at dinner and we're going to see him tomorrow. But I did invite him and his girlfriend to come to Baltimore to see me and be a tourist. I hope he takes me up on it.
And we all got dessert which was way too much. He had already eaten too much food. And the chocolate thing I got was a little too much chocolate. But we were full and happy and tired. Where did over the live nativity so we can all have some animals. The goats and the Sheep were butting heads and it was very cute. We went in the church to take a picture with the Christmas tree. Pastor woman was very sweet but did not know how to take pictures. But that was fine. It was just nice being altogether.
We are back here and Mom put the clothes in the dryer so I could dry my clothes that I had washed earlier in the day. And then we all got together to open presents.
I got to go first. I got a dapping set for a jewelry making. Which is going to be great once me and James moved to a new place. I'm just going to work on collecting my jewelry making stuff and cleaning up the stuff I already have since I can't really make metal jewelry in the space I am now since my floor is tile and I will break it if I try to hammer anything on it. I also got some rose petal bath salts and a cool metal anchor. I also got 12 boxes of pasta salad. My favorite kind of pasta salad. So he's very excited about that.
They also gave me some money and that that went towards the jacket in the jeans I got yesterday. Plus I was able to buy a couple of the things on my Amazon shopping list like the tea diffuser and purse I have had my eye on. So overall a really good Christmas.
Mom and Dad open all their gifts next. They really liked the things I got them. And then they both opened the why I love Mom and why I love Dad books I had filled out. I made mom cry. That's an accomplishment. We try to do that every year. I'm glad that they really appreciated hearing from me. They are very important to me and they are very good parents.
After everyone opened their gifts I remember James had left one for me to open why he wasn't here. And it was the deer we had looked at on Amazon a few weeks back that reminded me of toy act when I was a kid. He also wrote a very cute note to go along with it. The deer does make me laugh though because it has a very uneven shoulders. He's very soft and we have named him Cupid. Because of love and stuff.
I hung out in the living room with them for a while. But now I'm in bed. Surrounded by about 12 blankets. Of varying softness. I'm going to go to sleep soon and tomorrow we're going to have a really chill Christmas. We're going to go visit my brother at lunch time. And then we're going to come home. And I'm going to work on lesson plans. And I'm going to lay around and do nothing. And then me and Mom are going to make dinner. I hope to watch a Muppets Christmas Carol and just enjoy a nice day. I hope you all do as well weather you celebrate or not. Good night everyone. Merry Christmas.

oooh ben/jay/evie is so good!! aww that fic warmed my heart. so cute that ben won in the end lmao
aw, i'm sorry to hear readers have been so nasty about audrey and uma in the comments. i have had that experience before too where a reader will take the character's thoughts as a fact. it's really frustrating. it makes me sad that some people refuse to give audrey or uma a chance.
i celebrate christmas too! ooh a snowy christmas sounds exciting. my main advice would be to bundle up (definitely make sure you have gloves and a scarf too, fleece lined leggings are also amazing since you can wear them under pants for that double layer of protection) and make sure you have the right tools to take care of the car. there's an ice scraper you can get for when the windows ice over, and if you're driving in snow, you may need to get chains on your tires. new york sounds like an interesting place to live! i'm sure there's a lot of fun stuff to do there, like shows and concerts. i never did the secret santa thing, except for fandom exchanges lmao. ooh yeah, making a snowman is pretty fun!
what are some of your favorite christmas movies?
- gifter anon
bwahahahaha i didn't think you'd read it lmao but yes, that's probably my fave ot3 of this fandom, and i always love ben having people underestimating just how much he's capable of being a little shit xD
thanks for all the tips! luckily, i don't have to worry about vehicle maintenance, as i didn't bring one when i moved. but! should i ever get one, now i know lol tho personally, i haven't actually made it out and about yet; i'm still very wary of covid, and i don't trust my immune system, even with the vaccine in me lmao but i'm dying to go to the city ballet!!!
ooooo are you ready for this??? okay so my absolute must view traditions are the rankin/bass oldies. not all of them, but i Need to see the life and adventures of santa claus [1985] and jack frost [1979] in order to feel like it's properly christmas lmao but other rankin/bass features i love rewatching during the season are: santa claus is comin' to town [1970], the year without a santa claus [1974], 'twas the night before christmas [1974], rudolph's shiny new year [1976], and rudolph and frosty's christmas in july [1979]. the rest of the catalogue i don't mind, but i don't Have to view them each season; the ones i listed are my most favorites
and then there's the muppet christmas carol, which i love so dearly, and a new favorite on the tradition rewatch is the nutcracker and the four realms, and then of course there's white christmas, a solid golden oldie that i also Need to see each christmas. oh, and how the grinch stole christmas [2000]. but i wouldn't say no to watching miracle on 34th street [1947] or the nutcracker prince or elf or it's a wonderful life or home alone/2 or batb the enchanted christmas or the santa clause or mickey's christmas carol or batman returns [lmaoooo hush it counts] or many many others
tho i cannot stand a christmas story or nat'l lampoon's christmas vacation, as my asshole brother watched them nonstop growing up lmao
[i didn't mention love actually, which actually used to be a yearly tradition, cause i haven't seen it since my dad died. it's one of several movies i haven't been able to bring myself to rewatch since he died]
i know a lot of queer folk say they love halloween and what not, but i am definitely a christmas queer: i may not get into the decorating or whatever, but i do love me some movies and themes about the holiday season lmao
[it might also have to do with the fact that i am a huge wuss so the chances of me being spooked during christmas stuff are slim xD]

Ty for the tag, I’ll answer best I can!
What are you currently reading?
I’ve currently been rereading East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a norwegian folktale that I’ve just absolutely fallen in love with since I first read it.
What’s your favourite movie you saw in cinemas this year?
I think I went to the cinema twice this year?? One time of which, cant even remember the film! And the second time I do remember the film but it wasn’t as good as I was expecting. Granted I was younger than the target audience 😅 however! I am going to see the Muppet’s Christmas Carol in cinemas later today so I’ll use that as my answer.
What do you usually wear?
My trust pair of green flares! It’s unfortunately a bit too cold for dresses, which is always sad for me, but I’ve also absolutely fallen in love with knitted jumpers!
How tall are you?
Half an inch below 53. Was not blessed in the height department.
What’s your Star Sign? Do you share a birthday with a celebrity or a historical event?
Virgo! And according to Famous Birthdays.com, I share my birthday with Prince Harry, Tom Hardy, Jenna Marbles, Agatha Christie, Jimmy Carr and Queen Letizia of Spain.
Do you go by a name or a nick-name?
I use a nickname when I’m online, but irl I just use my name.
Did you grow up to become what you wanted to be when you were a child?
Absolutely not. Young Maggie desperately wanted to be a singer. That’s not happening.
Are you in a relationship? If not, who is your crush if you have one?
Very much single, and I think I’ve just gotten over a crush. No need to find a new one just yet.
What’s something you’re good at, vs. Something you’re bad at?
Discovered yesterday I’m awful at wrapping presents. Something I’m good at? Ig editing?
Dogs or cats?
Neither. Bunnies.
If you draw/write, or create in any way, what’s your favourite picture/favourite line/favourite etc. from something you created this year?
Favourite line?? This is from a fanfic I never ended up writing, but this piece of dialogue I’m still super proud of!
“We cannot! The lord shuns it, for it is unethical.”
“Surely the lord can practice his forgiveness for one mistake.”
“You are grieving.”
“Is that not why you came, to court me whilst I grieve? To pursue our darkest desire whilst I am too desperate to think straight.”
😌😌
What’s something you would like to create content for?
I’d love to have a go at writing a ScotNor fanfic, but I’m too nervous to. Plus I wouldn’t know what to write.
What’s something you’re currently obsessed with?
Gonks!! Little scandinavian elf-like creatures who traditionally would sit outside the farm house during the winter and guard it. Gonks would be really helpful if you treat them nicely, but much more mischievous if you didn’t. I love these little guys, I think they’re adorable!!
What’s something you were excited for that turned out to be disappointing this year?
Ooof, not actually sure? This is going to sound silly, and a bit depressing, but I guess when I was younger I had a plan to up and move to Denmark when I turned 18. This year would’ve been that year. It’s sad to realise you’re not at the point you thought you would be, and even sadder is the realisation I might never get to move. Something I’ll have to learn to be okay with, I suppose.
What’s a hidden talent of yours?
Don’t think I have one! 😅
Are you religious?
Nope!
What’s something you wish to have at this moment?
A magic button to press to magically do my house chores for me would be pretty good rn ngl 💀💀
Ahhh ppl to tag… @radioactivehydronerd @brokskar @malentia92 … do I have anyone else to tag??
Tag Game To Better Know You! Send this to people you’d like to know better!
Thank you @fizzycherrycola for tagging me! <3
What book are you currently reading?
I'm still making my way through "The vortex" by José Eustacio Rivera. The book is a classic in here and it has amazing descriptions of the amazonian rainforest but I always forget where I leave the book lol but I'm close to end!
What’s your favourite movie you saw in theatres this year?
The Batman! I loooove Batman and I was astonished with Robert Pattinson's take on the character and Paul Dano did an excellent job as The riddler!
What do you usually wear?
I wear a lot of dresses and big coats, they're comfy and look cute, I also lean to soft colors though lately I've been buying more green clothes...
How tall are you?
I'm the tallest in my family, but people here are not so tall...
What’s your Star Sign? Do you share a birthday with a celebrity or a historical event?
Cancer. My birthday is on independence day, so it's annoying at times, but it's always festive!
Do you go by your name or a nick-name?
Ilich is a nickname, but irl I just go by my name.
Did you grow up to become what you wanted to be when you were a child?
Haha no. When I was a child I wanted to be an astronaut which is nearly impossible in a country that has no space program. Though I am happy with what I am now.
Are you in a relationship? If not, who is your crush if you have one?
I am 🥰
What’s something you’re good at vs. something you’re bad at?
I am very good at swimming! I used to take lessons and all, but I am very bad at the trademark sports here like soccer and cycling.
Dogs or cats?
Cats!
If you draw/write, or create in any way, what’s your favourite picture/favourite line/favourite etc. from something you created this year?
I really liked this part of Together, I had fun researching about how outer space looks like and idk that part always gets me.
Everything seemed to work normally. Alfred lost count of how much time had passed, days, nights, it was hard to tell after they crossed by the Andromeda Galaxy, clouds of nebulae and a foreign web of constellations displayed an overwhelming number of suns, leaving them with the knowledge of how small the spiral-like Milky Way actually was.
There was a pause and shake of their heads every time the system marked a break on the distance from home. An infinite path strayed from their calculations, from their lifespans, but the prospect of a finish line for their journey didn't comfort them either.
In a surge of boredom, Alfred turned off the gravity inside, they seemed astonished at first. Wang had tried to turn it back on, but he had shoved him away and a childish game of tag started. It was strange, how unprofessional this was, how they were wasting time and energy on something so… human.
Alfred laughed, even when he knew they couldn't hear him, that they couldn't see his smile through the helmet, and it was… nice, for a while, but his laughter turned into sobs.
They were together, but not really.
What’s something you would like to create content for?
I think I'm happy with what I've done, and instead of creating new stuff I'd stop doing it, I want to finish my stories and take a break.
What’s something you’re currently obsessed with?
Cooking, this year I'm the one preparing the Christmas dinner and I've been practicing and planning what to do. Some of my family is coming over too so Idk I'm a bit nervous with that haha
What’s something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?
The Wakanda forever movie, there's something about how they handled having two powerful nations/empires and putting them against each other that simply disappointed me... It's a good movie but idk what I was expecting.
What’s a hidden talent of yours?
Hmm I've been crocheting lately and it's getting better haha
Are you religious?
I'd like to say no but I'm constantly catching myself for assuming that some traditions here (that are heavily catholic) are also usual in other places, so that makes me go 🤔🤔
What’s something you wish to have at this moment?
Ahh I need some nice buñuelos (a pastry), in fact I think I'll get some of those on my way home.
I'm tagging @fireandiceland @magictrio1118 @darcymariaphoster and @crumpled--notes if you want to~

The Rod Serling Christmas Movie You Never Saw
https://ift.tt/2LtOQF3
A Christmas Carol is the definitive Christmas story. Yes, you might try and argue it’s the nativity, but the volume of movie adaptations begs to differ, and I can tell your heart’s not in it. And yes, I see those of you rushing to the comments to tell us it’s Die Hard and I think you’re very big and clever.
But A Christmas Carol has everything, all the trappings of Christmas, that sliver of darkness running through the whole thing, and above all a strong seasonal message to remind us what Christmas is about.
The story has been reimagined and retold endless times since Charles Dickens’ book came out, from textually accurate recreations such as A Muppet Christmas Carol (seriously) to modern-day reimagining like the Bill Murray vehicle, Scrooged.
And across all of these different retellings, the seasonal message is usually the first casualty. Scrooge’s lesson is often softened into “charity is good” or “don’t be mean to people”, or, at its worst, Scrooge’s sin is made out to be that he doesn’t like Christmas.
But A Christmas Carol itself is unflinching in its look at poverty, and poverty as a direct result of the actions of the powerful, and Scrooge’s argument for “decreasing the surplus population” still wouldn’t look out of place in several mainstream journalism outlets today. Very few adaptations of the book, even the faithful ones, capture the anger that runs through the original story. It’s not a general anger at the idea of “meanness”. It’s a very specific anger targeting political ideas and rhetoric that people held then and now.
Over a hundred years later, Rod Serling was another writer who wasn’t afraid of using his writing to express political anger. Anyone who’s seen even a handful of episodes of The Twilight Zone will know Serling used his platform to target McCarthyism, war, bigotry, and conformity.
The opening narration of one of the most famous episodes, ‘To Serve Man’, reads:
“The world went on much as it had been going on, with the tentative tip-toeing alongside a precipice of crisis. There was Berlin to worry about, and Indo-China and Algeria and all the other myriad of problems, major and minor, that somehow had lost their edge of horror because we were so familiar with them.”
That atmosphere of dull, routine, existential terror will sound familiar to anyone who has just lived through the post-2016 Hell Years.
But while Serling was determined that The Twilight Zone would tell stories about the issues he cared about, he also had to fight tooth and nail against networks and advertisers that wanted nothing less than to be associated with anything “political”. So Serling’s political messages were frequently veiled in magic, “Men from Mars” and hypothetical futures.
So it’s surprising that, in all 156 original Twilight Zone episodes, most of them written by Rod Serling himself, that the show never tried its own twist on the classic Christmas story that was in many ways tailor-made for the Twilight Zone treatment.
Except Rod Serling did write his own take on A Christmas Carol, as a TV movie featuring Peter Sellers, and it’s been almost completely forgotten.
A Carol for Another Christmas
A Carol for Another Christmas was a TV movie, aired on the American Broadcasting Company on the December 28 1964. It was the first in a planned series of movies promoting the United Nations. The final one of these films, about a UN narcotics agent, is believed to be the last story written by Ian Fleming before his death.

A Christmas Carol: The Best and Worst Adaptations
By Robert Keeling
That A Carol for Another Christmas was part of this series is probably why Serling was free to be far more openly and explicitly political than we’ve seen in even the angriest episodes of The Twilight Zone. It takes the line “Mankind was my business!” from Charles Dickens’s story, and turns it into a tale about America’s role on the international stage. It doesn’t linger on the trimmings of Christmas, instead taking a long, hard look at the dead, the dying and the suffering. At times it feels like a Christmas special from the makers of Threads.
The film also boasts a turn by Peter Sellers as a terrifying post-apocalyptic cult leader.
Peter Sellers appears in a modern remake of A Christmas Carol penned by the writer of The Twilight Zone and Planet of the Apes seems like a genuine piece of television history, and yet it’s virtually impossible to find today. Since its first broadcast in 1964, the film was only available to view at the Paley Center for Media in New York and Los Angeles and the UCLA Film and Television Archive in Los Angeles, and rare bootleg copies.
In 2012 TCM broadcast it for the first time since its original showing, and has done annually since, and has made it available for limited-time on-demand streaming via TCM.com. But there has never been a home video or DVD release and the film has never been broadcast elsewhere.
So as we go into a recap of the film itself, we’ll issue the standard spoiler warning, but also beware that if you’re waiting to watch it yourself you might have a long search ahead of you.
Three Very Different Ghosts
Watching A Carol for Another Christmas is a strange experience. The film is both frighteningly relevant but also weirdly dated, and extremely of its time. The structure of the story is the one you already know.
Scrooge- here called “Daniel Grudge”, is approached by his nephew, argues with him about Christmas, then is approached by three ghosts bearing the three usual messages, “You weren’t always this way”, “Others are not like you”, and finally “This is what will happen if you continue this way”.
Grudge, a wealthy industrialist, is approached by his nephew, Fred, who is furious because Grudge has put a stop to a foreign academic exchange scheme, and we’re already seeing here where Serling is leaving the source material behind.
Grudge’s sin isn’t mere miserliness. He’s an all-out American isolationist. He wants the foreigners to stay behind their fences while America stays behind its own, and Fred’s argument that America has no choice but to engage in the international community falls on deaf ears.
Grudge’s motive for this is that his son, Marley, is a soldier who has died fighting a war elsewhere (based on the timing we can reasonably guess it’s Vietnam). He’s angry that every 20 years the US gets dragged into a foreign war, and sees the UN and foreign exchange schemes and similar as getting involved in and giving handouts to places where it isn’t America’s business. His ideal is for the USA to stay behind its fence, building faster jets and bigger bombs so that other countries know to leave it alone.
After seeing a brief apparition of Marley, Grudge is transported to a boat, filled with coffins covered in the flags of different nations. The Ghost of Christmas past that introduces himself to us is as the war dead. Not just the American war dead, but an amalgamation of everyone who ever died in a war.
In a line that will have unexpected resonance for modern viewers, Grudge describes the war dead as a “sucker brigade”.
It’s a fascinating but confusing exchange. Serling, through his stories and his words, was openly against the Vietnam War, and yet his proxy, the Ghost of Christmas Past, makes a passionate case for America’s involvement in foreign wars “every twenty years” with a clear nod towards the combat in Vietnam. Ultimately, the Ghost of Christmas Past is arguing for the importance of talking. “When you don’t talk, you fight,” he says.
The most chilling moment comes when the Ghost reminds Grudge of his comment that other countries need to know America “isn’t too chicken to use the bomb”, and points out that they already know it.
The next scene takes Grudge back to his naval service, inspecting a hospital in Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped, and for a piece of 1960s prime-time Christmas viewing, it does not pull its punches. Rod Serling served in the occupational force in Japan and he has no time for sugar-coating this.
A doctor introduces young Grudge to Japanese children who looked up as the bomb detonated and had their faces flash burned off. The film lingers on these children and refuses to move on until you get a sense of the true horror of Hiroshima. It’s something you can’t picture TV doing today, and definitely not on ABC on the 28th of December.
“Watching Makes all the Difference”
The Ghost of Christmas Present at first seems far more like the one we remember from the Muppets. A man in a dressing gown gorging himself on a banquet. The Ghost of Christmas Present isn’t here to take Grudge on a rooftop flight, however- even with 1960s TV budget permitting.

How The Twilight Zone Influenced Are You Afraid of the Dark?
By Chris Longo
Instead, the dark background lights up to reveal this banquet table is right next to the barbed wire fence of an internment camp for displaced peoples, another image that is horribly resonant for modern audiences. As Grudge criticises the ghost for eating his feast while starving refugees watch, the Ghost simply responds that the “watching makes all the difference”.
Once again, Serling isn’t here to talk about “the needy” as some vague concept to make people feel better about themselves. He talks about giving people around the world vaccinations for their children, rolls off figures such as 13 million people with tuberculosis, 130 million with malaria, three billion suffering from hunger. He talks about people closing their windows as violent crimes occur in the street- mere months after the murder of Catherine Susan Genovese, the story which would eventually lead to the codifying of the “By-Stander Effect”.
The Ghost of Christmas Past says “You were not always like this”, the “you” is America, the “were not always like this” is (even with Hiroshima) a somewhat rose-tinted view of America’s foreign policy interventions.
The Ghost of Christmas Present says “Others are not like you”, and in this case shows us the suffering around the world and the USA’s responsibility to it.
Anyone who’s seen a version of A Christmas Carol before knows what comes next, and it doesn’t take a Ghost of Christmas Future to guess what the next vision will entail.
Grudge finds himself in his local town hall, a bombed-out wreck. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, a far more verbose spirit of Christmas future than we’ve come to expect, points out that in this future people have “less need for a platform for debate”.
One of the things that most jars with a modern audience watching this film, aside from an oddly uncritical perception of America’s role on the world stage, is the film’s constant refrain that “debate” is a good thing. In this film “debate” is what you do instead of fighting, it’s a way to find compromise, to solve problems. It rings very strangely in a time when “debate” is mostly associated with rhetorical games played in bad faith, and the idea we have some sort of duty to listen to and validate even the most toxic ideas.
We learn, unsurprisingly, that when the talking stopped the fighting started, and now the last few humans are living in the radioactive ruins of the civilisation that came before.
Then we meet Peter Sellers’ character, the Imperial Me. This is Sellers at his most comic and sinister, dressed up like an 18th-century pilgrim wearing a huge hat with “ME” written on it in giant sequins. Sellers is leading a horde of post-apocalyptic cultists to war against a nearby community that wants to “talk” and “debate”. The Imperial Me takes Grudge’s philosophy to its ultimate extreme, all that anyone should look out for is themselves. The Individual Me is above all, and after this tribe has killed off all the other rival tribes, they will set to killing each other, until the last individual is alone in the perfect society.
I’ve friends who work in the NHS with patients who won’t wear a mask “because it protects you, it doesn’t protect me”, so this scene hasn’t lost any of its bite.
Anyway, you know how the story goes from here. Grudge asks if these are things that will be or things that may be. He wakes up at home on Christmas morning. He reconciles with his nephew, admitting that “no man is an island”.

The Twilight Zone Forever: Celebrating 60 Years of Rod Serling’s Classic Anthology
By Anne Serling
But one thing this version misses is Grudge doesn’t then go on to eat a fabulous feast with his family. Instead, he takes his morning coffee in the kitchen, while his black servants work around him (and probably wish he’d sod off back to his study). It’s an oddly sparse ending compared to what we’re used to with our Christmas Carols.
Carols for Other Christmases
At the time this strange, didactic retelling of A Christmas Carol saw mixed reactions. It’s a film that doesn’t mind lecturing its audience, and quite a few reviewers took against it for that. The right-wing advocacy group the John Birch Society particularly took against it, organising a letter-writing campaign against the film before it was even broadcast.
Is the film preachy? Hell yes. But so is the source material. Where it differs from the source material is that it offers far less comfort, far less of the warmth we see with Fred and Fezziwig and Bob Cratchit, while the threats it warns of are a great deal more severe.
Perhaps it’s a film that is most interesting as an artefact of a particular time and the anxieties it had.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
But also it’s an example of the power of Charles Dickens’s story when it’s allowed to be more than a twee festive tradition. It’s a story that should have a sharp political bite as much as warm fuzzy nostalgia. As much as it’s a Christmas story, A Christmas Carol is a ghost story, and ghost stories are meant to be scary.
