ppl in the Trobed discord asked if I had more future headcanons for Rickie and Leon (Troy and Abed’s kids from my Nadir-Barnes Canon verse) when they grow up and I was THRILLED because idk if I’m going to write more in that verse (writing too far into the future makes me wary for some reason? like how can I just pretend I have ANY concept of what the 2030s will be like) but YES I HAVE THOUGHTS:

Rickie grows up to be a confident, outgoing person, the life of the party and everyone’s de facto big brother, although he does struggle a bit more with those early traumas and is more self-conscious about identity issues, so that confidence is the result of intermittent therapy and mindfulness

Such as, for example, morning prayer with Abed, which leads to him expressing more of an interest in Islam--sometime in late elementary/early middle school he transfers to a mainstream school that’s close enough for him to walk to a nearby after school program, and eventually formally converts. (Leon doesn’t feel the need for that and Abed doesn’t feel the need to push.) so yeah, another trilingual in the family heyyyyy.

Neither of the kids are fluent in Polish, although they hear it occasionally from Abed around the home.

He likes to dance as a hobby, although not so much modern--he likes jazz and hip-hop, things that are more high-energy. He and Troy have a LOT of spontaneous dance parties around the house. But starting in middle school, spoken word poetry and rap become his real big things and he eventually goes on to have a music career--think early Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper vibes. (Leon achieves minor TikTok stardom for his ASL covers at one point.) He likes to run them by Troy first, and Troy and Abed are the ultimate hype men.

Abed is always really careful to seek out opportunities to connect with both kids, and they’re both written into Voyage of the Starship Legacy in some way... but it’s Leon’s. He thinks of it like a personal bedtime story that happens to have been made into a feature film, and it’s his comfort rewatch. In general he’s more of a fan of Abed’s stuff because he likes the meta aspects, and while Rickie enjoys them too, that’s not really his style as much, you know?

(I mentioned in one of the fics, Rickie is Abed’s ego-shrinker. If people find out Rickie and Leon are Abed’s kids they’ll be like “omg that’s so cool!” and Leon will be like “haha yeah” awkwardly and Rickie will say “cool? lol right, it’s the nerdiest thing about me.”)

Subsequently, Leon is always really excited when Troy suggests they go sailing. Rickie is enthusiastic in theory but usually gets bored once they’re out on the open sea, so this becomes Troy and Leon’s Thing, especially as he gets older and is less easily entertained by funny voices and faces. He just finds the open ocean very soothing and, yknow, parallels between sailing and space exploration or whatever. He really loves hearing Troy’s stories about his trip.

He’s more of a shy person, especially around people his own age--definitely not an entertainer the way the rest of the family is, and has a bit of a dryer sense of humor. One of his hobbies growing up is drawing, and there’s a running joke in the extended (found) family that someday Abed is going to produce an animated film illustrated by Leon modeled on Troy’s dance troupe with a soundtrack by Rickie. Cut to Leon’s sophomore year of college, when he announces that....... his major is astrophysics and he has a summer internship at NASA

(you can’t prove I was rewatching The Martian when I came up with this) (I just love the idea of Abed’s kids being just as phenomenally successful but one in in a Very different way, also I think the study group’s reaction would be very funny for some reason) (come on guys, he’s been very into space for a long time, this shouldn’t be a surprise, right?

Sometime around middle school, Leon starts not only not putting his hearing aids in, but leaving them at home when he goes out. Troy and Abed always prefer he have them as a backup, and a very common dad joke in their household is “You’d lose your ears if they weren’t attached to your head--oh, wait.” Eventually he admits that yeah, he’s “forgetting” them on purpose, partly because he’s getting tired of Questions and Looks, partly as an act of defiance because he dislikes the expectation that he wants to hear all the time, partly because it makes him feel Some Kind of Way that he doesn’t actually need them--that between his family, his school, his community, and even the cashier at the bodega across the street who taught himself a few signs, he really can get plenty of social interaction and communication just using ASL and he likes that feeling. (Troy is especially touched by that, given that he does not have Abed’s gift for languages and learning ASL took more effort for him.)

They both really enjoy traveling. The family makes semi-regular trips to Arizona and wherever Annie ends up with the FBI, but spend the most time in Colorado--especially in the summers. Gobi is still grumpy but spoils the kids rotten, and they like being the cool older cousins of Jeff and Britta’s kid. the Bennett boys are a little older but Rick and Leon are always trying to convince them to get into Shenanigans, and when they do, they reach a whole new level of shenanigans. Shirley is Tired.

They come back from Colorado with more complimentary Greendale merch than you could ever imagine. the Dean knows they’re not going to go there but..... he can try. Rickie gets his first taste of alcohol from Britta. Leon goes to Annie for girl advice when he gets his first crush because he figures his dads are way too gay to be helpful. Jeff takes them out to play paintball all the time (in like... actual, legit paintball--fields? idek what they’re called) and regales them with tales of Greendale paintball, which they had been 100% sure their dads were exaggerating until Jeff stepped in. They think Chang is putting on a hilarious act for like their entire childhoods and are solely responsible for portions of Chang’s “I Never Die” song becoming a meme among LA schoolchildren.

oh and I don’t have, like, faceclaims for them or anything but I picture Rickie wearing lots of bright colors and being ultimately like an inch or two shorter than his little brother, which offends him deeply, and Leon tends to wear his hair a little longer, like..... Power Rangers-era Eka Darville.

ANYWAY those are the things that have been milling around in my head the last couple of weeks. I have very strong feelings about this children I made up <3 <3 <3

BEHEGDJDHD I left my bedroom to go get water n I came back n from the darkness heard this deep, lonely sigh n it scared me so bad but it was just my dog. Help I love her but she is a pain sometimes BEURGDJSBDM scared me. SO BAD.

This is a rlly bad picture of her from earlier btw :] she is the baby. She is very dorky n so frickin cute!! Her social skills w/ other dogs are like. .5/5 stars but with peopel she is a littol angel <333 Everytime we leave for more than 5 minutes she goes crazy when we get back. She jumps a lot n it’s so cute!!! When she’s let into the backyard as I unlock the door she kind of lowers herself into a pounce position n then as soon as it’s opened she is SPEEED. she races down the steps then runs until she gets to this giant pile of soil n barkchips then she LEAPS into the air, her paws outstretched. :]]

She has this “muffin mouth” as I call it (I also call her a muffinhead becuz of BadBoyHalo) basically her jowls get stuck on her teeth n get a lil poofy because of it, sometimes it’s on,y one side n she looks confused becuz usually when that happens she tilts her head to the side. Also when she does the muffin mouth her bottom teeth stick out a bit which is rlly funny, n sometimes her tongue will be in a littol blep it’s so cute

I miss my old dog though. I don’t really remember her very well but her name was Corabell n she was an Aussie Shepherd!!! My bestie always called her a sausage n she was!! So wiggly! Becuz yknow they like. Chop off their tails or somthing but since she didn’t have much of a tail to wag she’d just shake her whole butt. She had this SUUUPER loud bark n we always got her a hedgehog squeaky toy for Christmas. She didn’t get along too well with other dogs either but!! My grandparents dog Russ (who sadly passed as well) n her were besties. Everytime we went to their farm they woudl play the whole time!!

Now my grandparents have a puppy named Dutch n he is!! Such a sweetheart! The sweetest lil guy. He’s got this biigggg swooshy tail n he’s super friendly and cuddly. He somehow always gets Rosie sopping wet (he splashes her with water from his bowl n his kiddie pool. Also slobbers over her ears becuz that’s his (play) fighting technique, he'll just latch onto her ears)

My cousins just visited for Thanksgiving n they brought their dogs, Poppy & Hamish. Poppy is a Shiba Inu n she pretends to not notice you but she loves attention. She also looks for gifts for u when u first arrive it’s rlly cute! She also destroys ping pong balls.

Hamish, idk what breed he is but he’s HUUUGE n floofy!!!! He attacked me w/ a sock once hehe he is very slobbery but also a snugglebug. I adore big dogs they r so sweet <33 he tries to swipe food off the table with his tail (or so I’ve been told) I love himb so much!! I only get to see him and Poppy like once a year :((

My Nana and Pa also have a cat!!! Her name is Button she is black with yellow eyes :D I named her becuz she was “cute as a button” which is true! Whenever we visit I’m her favourite I think :]] she is very independent but ever since my dad installed a greenhouse she has been seen more often (it is warm in there!) she always sits up when I enter and leans into my arm when I give her scritches n pets. She also drools and purrs <333 my brother wanted to name her Shadow and I remember being so defiant like “no no! Her name is Button ://“

My Grandma and Grandpa used to have a cat idk how to spell her name but she was Siamese and literally didn’t like anyone besides Grandpa n my brother. Probably becuz all us kids were super young n always tried to look for her, I remember shining a flashlight under my grandparents bed to try to find her. I also remember when we visited them in California that I’d make my brother go out the room in the morning first because I was scared of her. I miss California :(( I was too young to fully enjoy Disneyland but I do remember the Winnie The Pooh ride being a favourite! And Eeyore gave me a flower once :]]] I love Eeyore

I should probably stop ranting or I’ll just keep going :/

WHWKQBWBE okay so

- Gordon was born in America and so were his parents but they grew up around the west coast surrounded by family. I feel like his grandparents were more so the ones who spoke spanish so he’s still mostly English speaker first but he likes to call Joshua cute nicknames that he remembers his grandparents calling him!! (He switches mostly between Mijo and Peluche)

- Gordon’s last name “Freeman” is actually from his mom’s side!! One of his grandparents were white so they got that name from there, but his Dad decided to take his wife’s maiden name.

- Despite growing up with extended family, Gordon could never really connect with anyone and eventually had a falling out with his parents, but when he had Joshua, two of his cousins came around to help him out despite not remembering to well. Gordon was hesitant about getting help at first but eventually comes around, they were the ones watching Joshua while Gordon went through the events of Hlvrai

- Gordon was gifted Selena Quintanilla discs as a joke one year from his cousins but unironically ended up loving her music

- For a while, Gordon was okay with not knowing a whole lot about his culture but when he finds out Tommy’s also Mexican, an interest spurs back

And then for Tommy

- So we all know that Tommy was an orphan until Gman came around to pick him up and take him to Dunkin Donuts like the good dad he is - I think Tommy did have an official last name before he was adopted but didn’t feel too much of a connection to. What he WAS proud of was being Mexican in itself because that was a part of him - all his last name really gave him was a tie to his parents that he didn’t want, seeing as how they’re the ones who left him. So the conversation at the Dunkin Donuts was more like 8 year old Tommy going“I don’t have a last name that’s MINE. My last name belonged to my parents :(“ and Gman answering,“Why don’t you pick one for us then? You are my son now.”

- Tommy and Gman know multiple languages!! Spanish was Tommy’s first language and Gman learned that to speak with him, then as bonding time, Gman taught Tommy how to read the Sweet Voice, and Finally he learned English in school. Tommy’s stuttering is a result of him still being relatively nervous when he speaks English, it’s not that he isn’t good at it, it’s just that he feels more comfortable when he can fall back to talking in Spanish.

- Tommy’s absolute favorite singer is Natalia Lafourcade, “Un Pato” is really cute and gets stuck in his head easily

- Tommy doesn’t like to cook himself and often will go over to someone’s house to eat with someone else if Gman isn’t home, but he WILL make effort in the winter to bust out a really good pot of menudo, pepper flakes and all

- After they escape Black Mesa, Tommy takes Gordon to those festivals and performances of the folklorico dancers with Joshua. Both of them think the uniforms and the dancing are very pretty!

- Okay this one is more about both Gordon and Tommy but they really don’t like those candies covered in the pepper dust (yknow the ones), I figure they both have more of a sweet tooth. Tommy Can handle spices really well but Gordon doesn’t like it at all so they would just opt to get some classic stuff like chocolate or something

- OH WAIT if they both have a sweet tooth, they’d probably like pan dulce. As long as it’s fresh

- Last one, I haven’t personally tried them but my brother is a big fan of Jarritos so Berhaps Tommy likes them. Idk if Jarritos is like Top Tier soda or if its low tier stuff

YESSS! So at the beginning of October, I had been struggling to come up with a house warming gift for my sister and her husband because they just moved into their first house. I had looked around online but wasn’t really seeing anything that I liked all that much. It hit me suddenly though when I was watching the food network to make a copy of our grandfather’s cookbook. My sister had been really close with him, and he passed away when she was 8 (I was only 1 so I never got to know him unfortunately). I knew right away it would be the perfect gift. He had originally made 5 copies, one each for his 3 daughters and 2 daughters in law. It’s a great little cookbook and basically every one in the family loves it. However, it’s something he typed up on a typewriter and there was no digital copy to be able to make additional physical copies.

I was initially going to use like Shutterfly or Blurb to make a version of his cookbook. I was into it at first, but was disappointed that none of the available fonts really looked the typewriter font. So I did a quick search and found a font available that looked almost exactly the same, and I mean almost exactly. The only difference was in the number 1 and the fractions, but other than that, it was spot on. Unfortunately, none of the places I found offered a way to use a custom font. So instead, I decided to make a digital copy in word and find some place local to have them printed. It took me about a week and a half to get the digital copy just right, there’s a lot of weird formatting. In that time, my parents and I decided that basically all of the grandkids need to a copy. My cousin Phil’s wedding is coming up (this Friday) so we figured that would make a good wedding present for him. And my cousin Bryan got married just a couple months ago so it only seemed right he get a copy too. My cousin Christa has been married since I was like 11 or 12 so really it’s overdue that she has a copy. And since they’re all getting copies, my brother and I obviously should have our own copies too. And yknow what, why not just make an extra copy just because? My cousin Michael is just shit out of luck, he lives over in Russia so if he ever wants a copy he’s gonna have to come home to get one lol.

So we’re up to 7 copies of this cookbook that we now really, really want to have ready for the wedding this Friday. I was looking into UPS and Staples for printing it, but unfortunately they don’t do custom print sizes, just 8.5″ by 11″. The original is 6″ by 9″ and its small size of it is part of its charm really so I wasn’t into 8.5″ by 11″. My dad luckily remembered that there’s this small print shop in town, and they’re bound to do custom sizes like this. I tried stopping by on Monday last week, but of course they were closed. I called the next day and asked a couple questions to the guy who answered and he told me they prefer to have project details sent in by email. Also, the woman who handles orders is out at a conference and won’t be back until the following day. So I send in an email with the details and submit a copy of the file on their website. I don’t hear anything from her until late Thursday asking for a clarification on whether it’s double or single sided and telling me she’s gonna get back to me the following day with a quote. Friday we manage to hash out all the details. Turns out they’ll have to order in the GBC binding and clear plastic covers and she thinks that most likely late next (this) week the printing would be done and the week after the order would definitely be ready. Obviously that’s too late to make the wedding, but she asks me if there’s a specific date I’d like it done by if possible. I tell her Thursday would be amazing (that’s when we’re heading out for the wedding). She agrees that it would be amazing (lol) and she’s not sure they’ll be able to make that date, but she’ll certainly try.

I figure there’s no way it’s gonna be ready. It’s a small order, but under a week is not a lot of time to get it done. I just heard from her though and the order has already been completed!! I could not be more excited! I can’t wait to see them and get them to everybody. I’m just so excited.
