I had training the other day to use something called an Evac chair - every library in my county has to have one, as did the supermarket I previously worked in. If you cannot walk downstairs you can sit in one of these chairs and someone like me who has been trained in how to use it can safely use the chair to take you downstairs. It has a track that moves over each step smooth so if the person doing it knows what they're doing - which they will, hence training - it's a surprisingly smooth ride and it is balanced in a way that anyone regardless of physical strength can move any passenger.

So, if you are a wheelchair user, or for any other reason can't make it down the stairs in a fire, there is a way you can safely and quickly be evacuated by anyone who has had the training (which for us was carried out by a lovely and Incredibly Thorough Man.
