Note
i suppose there is a sort of plausible deniability, for lack of a better word, with brachycephalic breeds because not every single cat of these breeds is severely affected - unlike folds and lykoi, where the gene that causes their distinctive traits inherently causes pain - and there's no way to really tell from a photo alone if the specific cat has BAS or not.
sorry for dropping in your inbox unprovoked no one i know has any interest in philosophizing about cat pedigree =/ᐠ-ꞈ-ᐟ\=
Previous ask: "not accusatory, genuinely interested in your take. why do you avoid folds and lykoi, but not brachycephalic breeds (persian, himalayan, etc)?"
I'm glad you asked!! I've thought about it a lot. What I've concluded is that there's a difference in their treatability and severity.
A lykoi *will* develop painful cysts all over their body, and a scottish fold *will* have arthritis from birth. These are problems that can't be bred out. On the other hand, it's possible for a cat to be quite brachycephalic and live a full, healthy life.
So like... brachycephaly isn't great, I think a lot of breeders out there are producing unhealthy cats, but exotics aren't doomed to a life of agony in the way some breeds are.
Lykoi and folds cannot be ethically bred. Exotics can, so it's extra sad when a lot of breeders continue selecting for worse and worse brachycephaly even though it impacts their ability to breathe.
Here is an illustration of a persian That i drew with my mouse
