I'm trying to write these earlier in the day.
I used to put off writing until I finished the smaller, more tractable tasks I set for myself. But by the time I finished the little things, I had no energy for writing.
Now, though, I find I don't have the energy for the little things if I start writing too late in the day. If I start writing late enough, I don't have the energy to exercise.
It's 10:15 a.m. Let's see if I can't finish this with energy to spare.
I.
I write to you from San Francisco, a small town on the Pacific Coast of California, servicing a patchwork of commuter suburbs around what we call the "San Francisco Bay Area."
Back in the 1950s, they called the City "Baghdad by the Bay," after its profound ethnic and religious divides, low-intensity urban warfare, and decrepit public infrastructure.
It's awful. Even here in the Green Zone.
II.
Americans like to say that San Francisco has a "Mediterranean" climate. And it's true that it has a Köppen climate classification of Csb, which we call a "warm-summer Mediterranean climate."
Köppen is a three-tier classification scheme. It designates climates by three-letter labels, with each letter dividing the world into finer and finer categories.
The first Köppen letter divides the world into five parts, each designated by the first five letters of the alphabet: tropical A; arid B; temperate C; cold D; and polar E.
Four of the five letters separate the world into mutually-exclusive categories by mean temperatures in the hottest and coldest months, making for a neat algorithm.
If it's above 10ºC in the coldest month, it's tropical A, else:
If it's above 0ºC in the coldest month, it's temperate C, else:
If it's above 10ºC in the hottest month, it's cold D, else:
If it's below 10ºC in the hottest month, it's polar E.
Arid B is an irregularity. It's based on a precipitation threshold, not mean monthly temperatures. It's also hard to characterize in a single phrase, since it varies with the seasonality of the precipitation. It's higher if the precipitation comes in warm months.
But never mind that. It's not arid in San Francisco. That's part of the problem.
In San Francisco's Csb, C stands for temperate, s for dry summer, and b for warm summer.
Temperate means it averages above 10ºC in the hottest month and between 0ºC and 18ºC in its coldest; dry summer means it gets less than 40 mm of precipitation in its driest month; and warm summer means it averages below 22ºC in the hottest month, but above 10ºC for more than four months each year.
Now, is that Mediterranean? It's not obvious to me that it is. Let's go to the map.
III.
Here's beautiful California, in all its climatic variation, courtesy of our friends at the Köppen-Geiger Explorer:
Tumblr media
Let's start in the Los Angeles basin, along the borderlands between the yellow and sienna towards the bottom of the map.
Tumblr media
Los Angeles divides into three primary climate regions, which provide a useful key to the California experience.
The coast of western Los Angeles, from Santa Monica down to Palos Verdes, and continuing along the coast of Orange County to the south, is a cold, semi-arid steppe, or Bsk.
It's a climate it shares with Colorado Springs, the Texas panhandle, and a swathe of the Eurasian steppe lands, from Crimea to Volgograd to Inner Mongolia.
South and central Los Angeles, south of the 10, but extending northeast to a frontier in Culver City, Mid-Wilshire, and Koreatown, and south through Anaheim and Garden Grove to Irvine, is a hot, semi-arid steppe, or Bsh.
It's a climate it shares with Gaza, the West Bank of the Jordan, Mosul, the Zagros foothills of Khuzestan, Amritsar, and the northern, or Turkish, part of Cyprus.
North of that, extending from downtown across the mountains into the San Fernando Valley, and east across the river to El Monte, Pomona, and Rancho Cucamonga, is the last part of Los Angeles, the hot-summer Mediterranean, or Csa.
This climate, the climate of Glendale and Pasadena, of Burbank and Sherman Oaks, of Van Nuys, Encino, and Calabasas, is what I think of as the actual Mediterranean climate.
Because it's the climate of the actual Mediterranean.
Tumblr media
It's a climate it shares with Athens and Rome, Syracuse and Tunis, Jerusalem and Jaffa, Florence and Naples, but not, significantly, a climate it shares with San Francisco.
Because it's too warm for the city by the Bay.
IV.
Now let's look north, to the Golden Gate.
Tumblr media
Here you can see that the Bay Area is, as you might have guessed, a homogeneous and indistinct stain on the map of California.
Does it have semiarid steppe lands? No. Does it have hot summers? No. From the South Bay to the Valley, from the West Side to the East Side, everyone has the same climate, and nobody's very happy.
San Francisco shares a climate with Oakland which shares a climate with Mountain View which shares a climate with Sausalito which shares a climate with San Jose which shares a climate with Berkeley and Richmond. It's a climate that stretches, like an open sore, down to Santa Cruz and Monterey.
It's all the same fucking climate.
It's called, as you may recall, the warm-summer Mediterranean climate, or Csb. Not hot summer. Not the summer of Glendale or Pasadena. No. A warm summer.
How warm is a warm summer? Is that a Mediterranean kind of summer? Is that the kind of summer you get in the south of France or the Greek islands? Well, no.
You know who else has a warm summer?
Tumblr media
Fucking Galicia, that's who. The Parnassus Mountains. Mount fucking Lebanon.
You know who else has this fucking climate?
Tumblr media
The Pacific fucking Northwest. Because it's cold and wet there. Just like San Francisco.
VI.
San Francisco: It's cold and damp!
I fucking hate it.

Elon Musk’s America PAC and several other defendants, including the reelection campaign for Representative Michelle Steel, a Republican from California, are accused of violating California labor law in a class action lawsuit filed in Orange County on October 30, according to court documents obtained by WIRED.
The named plaintiffs, Tamiko Anderson and Patricia Kelly, were canvassers for Steel in October of this year, according to the suit, which alleges that they weren’t paid agreed-upon wages. America PAC is named because it provided campaigning services for Steel.
The plaintiffs are also suing over an alleged failure to reimburse business expenses and for allegedly being provided inaccurate wage statements. The suit seeks class certification for “All current and former non-exempt employees of Defendants in the State of California who were employed as canvassers and canvassed for Michelle Steel at any time from October 30, 2023, through the present.”
“The Steel campaign has no knowledge of these individuals, they did not and do not work for the Steel campaign, and the campaign will not comment on individuals that involve a Super PAC with which we have no involvement,” a spokesperson for the Steel campaign said in a statement.
These allegations are different from those WIRED reported earlier this week, when canvassers in Michigan said they were tricked and threatened as part of Elon Musk and America PAC’s get-out-the-vote effort for Donald Trump. The door knockers, who worked for a subcontractor of America PAC, were flown to Michigan, driven in the back of a U-Haul, and told they would have to pay hotel bills unless they met unrealistic quotas. One was surprised to find, upon arrival in Michigan, that they were working to elect Donald Trump.
The Blair Group, a North Carolina firm that the complaint claims is a political consultancy, and Liberty Staffing Services, a Florida firm specializing in hiring and payroll for canvassers and other W2 employees of political campaigns, are the other named defendants. Neither immediately responded to requests for comment. The suit also lists unknown Johns Doe as defendants.
The plaintiffs are owed money, according to the suit.
“As with other members of the Class, Plaintiffs were guaranteed an agreed upon wage hourly wage [sic] upon starting their employment. However, Plaintiffs are informed and believe that Defendants failed to pay them at the correct hourly wage, and, instead, paid them based on the number of residences they canvassed. To date, Plaintiffs have yet to receive the underpaid wages owed to them,” the complaint states.
The defendants in the lawsuit also were not reimbursed for downloading various apps on their personal devices, according to the complaint. The plaintiffs also allege their cell phones were used to track time worked, but that they still were not compensated for those hours.
America PAC, into which Musk has poured more than $100 million, has largely taken up get-out-the-vote operations in key swing states for the Donald Trump campaign. Widespread reports depict its operations as a mess, though—in addition to WIRED’s reporting on its efforts in Michigan, The Guardian has reported that up to 25 percent of its door knocks may be fraudulent, and NBC has reported that campaign operatives have concerns about “suspect data.” In an election all polls show as a toss-up, a shambolic field operation could well mean the difference between victory and defeat.
Neither Alex Spiro, Musk’s attorney, nor a spokesperson for X, which Musk owns, immediately replied to requests for comment and requests to be put in touch with a representative of America PAC, which does not list contact information on its website. A representative for The Blair Group also did not return a request for comment.

Words of Love
I would like to dig into the idea of "love" a little bit. This word gets bandied about quite a bit and I fear we all mean something different.
Part 1: Anita
After the oranges but before the cream pie to the face, Anita Bryant (an infamous anti-gay advocate in Dade County Florida) gave us these delightful words: "I love homosexuals. Its the sin of homosexuality that I hate" and "I don't hate homosexuals. I love them enough to tell them the truth: that God puts them in the category with other sinners".
Anita's "love" for the LGBTQ+ community prompted her to advocate against their basic human rights to employment and housing without discrimination in the 1970s. And her "Save the children" campaign was largely successful--at least in Dade County. Her influence can still be felt today in a lot of right wing canards (you can even see her shadow in the 2024 LDS policy of exclusion).
There is something compelling about Anita's version of "love". She loves the "sinner" enough to tell them the truth, to teach them, to coerce them back to righteousness. She loves them enough to hand them the tough realities of life.
Anita could probably point to scriptures and religious thinkers to support her brand of love. Sinners don't fare well according to the bible, so wouldn't our "love" motivate us to try and save them? Wouldn't you want to spare a loved one or even a stranger the horrors of eternal damnation and suffering?
Parents intercede for their children to keep them out of harms way. Isn't it loving to tell kids that cigarettes are harmful? Isn't it loving to remind children of the dangers of drinking and driving? Don't parents owe it to their children to protect them from harm from external or internal sources?
A cogent reader might be able to spot the difference here. There is a difference between loving someone by "informing of harm" and advocating for a removal of rights. Further more, this "love" is being conflated for control (however well intentioned), and learning to love without controlling is probably the most challenging part of parenting. But even more, our positions on cigarettes have shifted as science has provided more insights into their harm, similarly, as evidence has mounted showing the positive impacts of living authentically as an LGBTQ+ person, so to have publicly held stigmas and misunderstanding changed.
But, crucially, to Anita, she would maintain that she loves gay people and was motivated by love. It is not her problem that you may not agree with her definitions.
Part 2: Joanne
Before the Cyber bullying lawsuit and after the wild success of Harry Potter, JK Rowling published her attempt at "explaining" the maelstrom of social media debate that had sprung up around her. In the halcyon days of the early pandemic, JK Rowling tweeted almost-compassionate sentiments towards trans people such as: "I respect the right of every transgender person to live life in a way that makes them feel authentic and comfortable with themselves. I would march with you if you were discriminated against because you are transgender."
And in her "essay" published in July of 2020 (which was at one point entitled "TERF Wars" I'm almost certain, but has since been renamed), she specifically cites a transgender acquaintance whom Joanne calls "wonderful". And yet all this lip service to "respect" and "wonderfulness" has yielded some rather caustic twitter discourses, significant contributions to a increasingly transphobic political culture, and even some good old holocaust denialism.
Joanne's "love" (or she would call it "respect") seems to come if she deems it earned. My read is that for Joanne, transitioning should take a long time, require extreme levels of vetting (both internally and externally), and will only be achieved adequately by a relatively small number of people. Besides, if this population is so tiny, then we shouldn't have to accommodate them at the expense of everyone else's comfort. Love, it would seem, is a numbers game.
I do think Joanne's point about knowing a transwoman personally, should not go unremarked. She herself admits that she has met young trans people who she finds "adorable". And yet, even as we cheer for Brene Brown's "it's hard to hate someone up close", Joanne's behavior seems to suggest otherwise. She does know and respect the wonderful and adorable trans people in her circles, but that does not mean that they should have space to exist comfortably.
Joanne shows us that loving someone on a personal level is not the same thing as loving the group they represent. Furthermore, we all love someone close to us but don't agree with every thing they do. We question clothing choices, food preferences, parenting techniques, movies watched, books read, time wasted. To Joanne loving someone does not mean you need to advocate for then.
To Joanne, love is a limited resource and so who is loved and how they are loved must be chosen carefully. Joanne believes to make space for trans people comes at the expense of woman and girls, and don't woman and girls need to be loved too? There are more cis woman and girls than trans people. When love is scarce, than it follows that certain groups must be dismissed and harassed, I suppose.
Part 3: Dallin
Before his inevitable ascent to become the next prophet and after worriedly writing in the 1980's that "one generation of homosexual "marriages" would depopulate a nation...Our marriage laws should not abet national suicide", Dallin H Oaks gave a rather love-focused address in the most recent general conference (Oct 2024, Saturday morning session). He urged for us to remember the first two commandments and to avoid political contention by being peacemakers, despite the fact that he was involved, at least in part, with the recent transphobic policy put in place by the Church a few weeks ago.
My fear here is Dallin, lawyer that he is, has left a lot of words to be defined by the listener. What does it mean to be a peacemaker? What does it mean to avoid contention? And what does it mean to love?
From talks given in the past, Dallin's position seems similar to Anita and Joanne. Dallin's concern is getting people to the celestial kingdom which means that certain people need to be reminded that the way they are will not be compatible with that place. This is a thought birthed from love--he loves people enough to tell them what God expects from them! He's also keenly aware that there is a gulf forming in society and he's got to choose which one to protect because love is scarce, and given the voices he chooses to amplify (see the letter he reads in this young adult fireside), he stands with his more conservative base.
Dallin's love may be short sighted and biased, but he probably doesn't think so. He thinks his motivations are on the side of the angels and who am I to disagree, arguably he knows heaven better than I do.
But you may not find Dallin's version of love very uplifting or meaningful. You may find it motivated more from fear or bias, and perhaps your version of love has space for inclusion and multiple paths, but here is the kicker: your definitions and positions on love have limited reach.
Dallin's love is amplified in multiple languages all over the world every six months at least. When he speaks, people listen and to some degree internalize what he's saying. Dallin knows gay and trans people, he has a grandson that is openly gay, and still he shows his love this way.
Dallin has power and influence in this community and so his version of love gets elevated and replicated. Every six months we get the privilege of grappling with his love and decide what to do with it. Dallin's love comforts a certain subset of the audience while alienating others. His influence will eventually fade, but then we will need to move on to someone else's version of love and that is always a gamble.
Part 4: You
In queer spaces the individuals I have mentioned are often heavily criticized. And from my perspective rightfully so. Their actions and words have costs and inflicted damages our community routinely has to bear. But we need to be aware that our criticism that they should be more "loving" might not land where we would hope it does. They do, in their own definition, act out of love.
Their definitions certainly don't align with most of ours, but we don't often take the time define what we mean by love. And in writing this, I have come to realise that love contains multitudes: both good and bad--and holding people to my definitions just leads to unmet expectations.
What I have learned from this review is to acknowledge the differences in what love can be--I am less interested in love now but motivation and impact. Much of what I do in "love" is actually more motivated by a desire for "safety", "acceptance" or "belonging", which can have mixed results. I need to demonstrate, not to Anita, Joanne or Dallin, but to those in my life that the outcomes of certain "love" can be damaging and negative for me. I now know to avoid or be skeptical of the outcomes of Anita's, Joanne's and Dallin's love, but I also know that they don't think themselves unloving, so trying to convince them to "love" more is a fruitless exercise.
Perhaps, we become peacemakers when we hear the heartbreak of our neighbors and find ways to partner with them to build solutions. But ultimately, all of these words are up to you and how you wield them is your choice--but the fruits of your love will be decided by those who stumble across them and you cannot control how they will be received.

Cream with Orange and Chocolate
That pretty much describes an ice cream treat or the paint scheme of the Port Authority of Allegheny County’s two F7A’s that provided commuter service on Pittsburgh’s B&O Monongahela Valley line. Originally set up in 1975 using leased B&O RDC’s, PATrain acquired two rebuilt F7A’s to pull ex-C&O passenger cars. Originally built for the Southern Pacific, the F7’s had a second career on northern Pennsylvania’s Wellsville, Addison & Galeton. When the WAG folded its tents, GE rebuilt the EMD’s at Hornell, New York and sold them to PATrain, where they worked until the commuter service shut down in 1989. Seen here spending the night at Pittsburgh, this unit and its former WAG stablemate went to the Connecticut DOT, and have now been repatriated to the Southwest, residing in Texas and painted as ATSF 316/315. If you’re looking at the current political landscape or doomscrolling the news and asking how you can help, I have two organizations to put on your radar.
The first is Film2Future, a nonprofit I’ve been working with as a Board member and Board Chair for over six years. We’re giving underserved and diverse teenagers in Los Angeles access to professional-level filmmaking programs and employment opportunities through a zero-barriers-to-entry program that is completely free to our students and their families.
We know next year is going to be difficult for many of our students and families we work with, but we’re going to continue to do our best to provide education and opportunities so a new generation of diverse content creators to share their stories.
If you’d like to support us, you can buy a ticket to our Gala event next month, or just help out with a donation so we can continue to empower and support a new generation of diverse creatives and storytellers: https://secure.givelively.org/event/film2future-inc/2024-film2future-screening-awards-ceremony/2024-film2future-screening-and-awards-ceremony
Another organization I highly recommend is Public Law Center, a nonprofit, pro bono law firm that bridges the access to justice gap for low-income and vulnerable residents across Orange County.
Now more than ever, they need your help to ensure that they have the resources to advocate and support the most vulnerable members of our community, uphold their rights, and guide them through some of the most challenging moments in their lives.
We all know what’s coming, so please make a donation here to help ensure they can provide free civil legal services in the areas of highest need: https://publiclawcenter.networkforgood.com/projects/20106-public-law-center-donations
And if all you can do is spread the word to others, that helps too. Both of these organizations are ones I know personally, support personally, and will personally vouch for the efficacy and importance of.
If you’re looking at the next year in fear, and want to do something to help those who will be most affected, here are two good places to start.

Before trial, the Judge said he would accept a plea bargain and impose a term of 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison--but after loosing at trial the Judge gave a longer sentence.....
Nauman A Hussain, New York inmate 23B2641, born 1990, incarceration intake 06/13/2023 at age 33, parole eligible 05/14/2028, scheduled conditional release 05/14/2033, Full Release 05/14/2038
Manslaughter
Nauman Hussain, the limousine operator convicted earlier of 20 counts of manslaughter for his role in the deadly Oct. 6, 2018 crash, was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in state prison.
The Schoharie County Courthouse is just a few miles from the scene of the wreck. State Supreme Court Justice Peter Lynch handed down the sentence — the maximum allowed under state law.
“I’m familiar with all the facts of this case, and I’m going to render a verdict accordingly,” said Lynch, who last year rejected a plea deal that would have seen Hussain complete community service and receive probation in lieu of prison time for his role in the crash.
Hussain, the operator of Prestige Limousine & Chauffeur Service — the Wilton-based company, owned by his father, which rented the stretched 2001 Ford Excursion SUV, that would later crash after suffering catastrophic brake failure, to a group of 17 friends from the Amsterdam area to attend a birthday celebration in Cooperstown — did not speak during the proceedings.
He sat silently with his head down, handcuffed, wearing bright orange prison garb, as family members spoke for more than an hour.
All 17 passengers, the vehicle’s driver and two bystanders were killed after the vehicle’s brakes failed as it descended a steep hill on state Route 30, before crossing the intersection of Route 30A at speeds in excess of 100 mph, striking a vehicle in the parking lot of the Apple Barrel Country Store and coming to rest in a culvert.
Some raised questions about what role Hussain’s father, Shahed, played in the crash and whether his past ties to the FBI as an informant allowed the family to circumvent state and federal vehicle registration and inspection laws that could have prevented the wreck. Shahed Hussain was not in the country at the time of the crash and has never been charged in connection to the incident.
The FBI provided families of those killed in the crash a briefing about their handling of Shahed Hussain a few days before sengencing, but several have said questions remain about whether he used his connections with the agency to avoid persecution.
The sentencing comes two weeks after a jury convicted Hussain of second-degree manslaughter following a seven-day trial that was initially expected to last up to six weeks, but almost never happened at all.
Hussain, in 2021, accepted a plea deal to 20 counts of criminally negligent homicide that would have seen him escape jail time and instead serve probation and community service.
But Judge Lynch rejected to deal at a sentencing hearing, offering Hussain the option to serve 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison or go to trial.
Lynch, who called the deal “completely disingenuous and unacceptable to this court,” began overseeing the trial after Schoharie County Court Judge George Bartlett III, who approved the plea deal, retired.
The crash was caused by a ruptured rear brake line that rendered the vehicle’s back brakes inoperable and caused the front brakes to overheat and melt. The master brake cylinder was determined to be working at the time of the wreck.

Mike's been a friend of mine since high school, and I can vouch for him. He's been a professional television and screenplay writer and researcher for years, but the gig economy is doing him dirty recently. If you can make use of his services or give him a bit of help, it would be much appreciated. I'm broke myself, at least for another week, so I'm Signal boosting.
(Links to services are in the comments of his post)
Folks,
A writing assignment and a couple other gigs evaporated on me, and I'm desperately in need of $550 to stave off disaster this month. I'm currently trying to find some form of full time clerical, order desk, or editorial work and would appreciate any likely leads or suggestions.
If you just want to help out or make an advance payment on future services, my Venmo ID is @Michael-Dobkins, and the last 4 digits of my phone is 8090. Payments can also be made securely with most major credit cards directly through PayPal. Just click on paypal.me/MichaelDobkins to go to PayPal.

Thanks for reading...

HISTORICAL RESEARCHER
For more than fourteen years, I've been running THIS DATE IN SEAL BEACH HISTORY, a local history blog, that takes a deep dive in my hometown's past through old photos, stories, historical facts, and obscure tidbits hidden in old newspaper archives. I can apply these same skills and attention to your family or historical questions.
Normally, I charge $100 for an initial two hours research and newspaper clippings (usually that sufficient for most questions), but this month I'm offering a flat $25 fee for one hour and a $45 for two hours.

I will travel to your home in the Long Beach and Orange County with my computer and scanner and scan your vintage family and historical documents at high resolution. You'll get a copy of the raw image files that day after the scanning is complete (usually on an USB thumb drive).
I will then process the images and add captions based the dates, names, locations, and other information that you provide for each photo or document during the appointment. I will then make those processed files available in an online password protected folder for you to download. This usually take 7-10 days after the initial scanning appointment.

Christine Mora, 18 (USA 1994)
Christine Mora was a high school senior. She was 17 weeks pregnant when she underwent an abortion at Doctors’ Surgical Center in Cypress, California — an FPA (Family Planning Associates) location. FPA facilities have been linked to a long history of death and malpractice. She had no idea when she walked through those doors that she would never reach her 19th birthday or graduate from high school.
The abortion was done in only three minutes, which was a careless lack of patience for such a hazardous operation. Christine was left unattended afterwards and suffered a fall. Thomas Grubbs, the abortionist responsible for the girl’s 3-minute mutilation, was called to check on her.
He never should have left Christine unattended. By this time, her speech was slurred and she couldn’t respond to any questions in a way that made sense. An ambulance rushed the dying teenager to the hospital, where her father was called and informed about the abortion and his daughter’s condition.
Christine deteriorated for 8 days in the ICU before dying. Her 18-month-old was left a motherless only child. The heartbroken family was furious when the results of the autopsy came back and they saw what Grubbs had done to Christine.
The autopsy showed septicemia and hemorrhage in the brain, along with multiple cervical lacerations. It also revealed that Christine had a congenital heart defect called a foramen ovale, in which a connection between the two sides of her heart had not closed at birth as it was supposed to do. However, her heart defect did not cause her death.
Her family filed a wrongful death suit. The expert reviewing the case for Christine’s family said that the “treatment” provided to Christine at the FPA facility “fell below applicable standard” and that the “breach of standard care was the direct cause of Miss Mora’s death.” In particular, he faulted them because Grubbs had never examined Christine prior to the abortion (he’d had no contact with her at all before beginning her abortion) and because “The anesthesia record says that Dr. Bruggs did the entire extraction procedure in three minutes,” which was what caused the cervical lacerations. The lacerations had caused an amniotic fluid embolism, killing Christine.
The abortionist eventually settled out of court with confidentiality on the exact amount of the settlement included as part of the agreement.
FPA was also responsible for the deaths of Denise Holmes, 16-year-old Patricia Chacon, Mary Pena, Josefina Garcia, 17-year-old Laniece Dorsey, Susan Levy, Joyce Ortenzio, 19-year-old Tami Suematsu, 13-year-old Deanna Bell, Emmeko Reed, 16-year-old Nakia Jorden, Kimberly K. Neil and Kenniah Epps.
If it wasn’t for the abortion, Christine and her baby would still be alive.
