...Another reason why I'm not going to call the Calen/Evelyn parallels "unintentional" is because this show has always been very detail-oriented:
Edit: 10/27/2022: I added pictures
The most prominent example being the whole "Hunter is a Grimwalker of Caleb" mystery. Which was established in Hunting Palisman and concluded in Thanks to Them.
Hunting Palismen gave us a glimpse of what Hunter looks like. This is a relevant detail for what's shown in Eclipse Lake. I also want to note Flapjack taking a liking to him despite them not making an emotional connection yet.
Eclipse Lake: We see a book about Grimwalkers with drawings that look suspiciously like Hunter. This is supposed to make you think "Oh shit? Hunter is a Grimwalker? And Grimwalkers are implied to be clones of a deceased person. So WHO is Hunter a clone of?" Again, I want to note how Flapjack was really intent on sticking by and looking out for him despite Hunter being dismissive of him up until the end of the episode.
3. Elsewhere and Elsewhen: On one of the papers that fall out of Philip's journal we can see a drawing of Philip with someone that looks like Hunter. So you're like "OH so, Hunter is a clone of this guy, but who is he? Is he Philip's friend? A relative? What's their history?". I'm going to point out something: at the end of the episode, where Philip is in the cave, you can see a poster of a Grimwalker diagram and bags filled with Caleb's bones on the table.
4. Any Sport in a Storm: When Hunter is struggling to find a first and last name to call himself by, Flapjack tells him to use "Caleb" as his first name.
5. Hollow Mind: The reveal is dropped about Hunter being a Grimwalker. But we still don't know WHO he is supposed to be a clone of. Well, most of the audience don't know. But WE, the people who look at the background details know. Through the portraits in this episode, we get a glimpse of Philip's backstory. We can see he used to know someone who looks like Hunter - going all the way back to his childhood. So then you're like "Oooooh, okay so he used to have alot of history with this person, but are they childhood friends or brothers?" Btw these paintings are out of order in the episode. You had to search for them in the background, screenshot them, then piece them together in approximate chronological order:
6. And then In Thanks to Them we get the answer: they were brothers.
... The thing I've been trying to get at this whole time is this: TOH was clearly written for people who like to look for the subtle details. Again, we can see this in Hollow Mind where we're told The Tale of The Brother's Wittebane before we even hear about it in Thanks to Them
So, do you see why I'm not going to assume that The Owl House writers don't know what they're doing for the important story details? Do you see why I'm not going to overlook all the parallels between Evelyn/Caleb and Luz/Hunter?
Because while most of the audience will say Luz and Hunter as a couple would come out of nowhere WE know it won't because the foundation for their relationship has been laid out since Hunting Palismen. It's written in the bigger and the smaller details scattered throughout the story.
Luz and Hunter aren't minor characters - Luz is literally the protagonist and Hunter is a major character who has history with the main villain of the story. Both of these characters parallel past lovers whose actions are the only reason this story exists in the first place. So HOW can I assume that they don't know what they're doing - especially when they go out of their way to include details that MOST people will overlook?
#lunter#my opinion of this show has been drastically changed because of Thanks to Them#it offered alot of details that I didn't have beforehand. Everything just CLICKS now
