Let's talk about Tinkerbell films (Disney Fairies)
Tumblr media
Tinkerbell, also known "Disney Fairies" is a spin-off franchise based of the Peter Pan movies. These films are supposed to take place before the Peter Pan films, meaning they are sort of prequels.
The first film that started with this franchise was the film "Tinkerbell"(2008): The main plot is about the origins of the main protagonist Tinkerbell. She is born in the beginning of the story and is assigned a special talent that related to her personality. The main conflict is about how she tries other types of fairy talents since she is unhappy with her current one.
While the first film can have some weird implications about "you can't change you talent, you have this one forever" It has very spñid worldbuilding. We get to see how fairies use small animals as transport. Each type of fairy has their own culture and customs. The film also establishes how the fairies are in charge of changing the seasons and during the story they are preparing for start of spring.
Each of the Tinkerbell films explores an already established concept or introduces a new one that fits with the rest of the world. It's really cool how each movie is self contained but watching them all helps you understand the characters and the continuity better.
Another cool thing is how the female characters have their own personality, even if their personalities are simple. It is never rubbed of your face how they are the "strong female character" which is nice. It resembles shows like Winx Club and classic magica girl anime with a mix of adventure/action tropes.
The films also make reference to characters from the Peter Pan film. In "The pirate fairy" a young Captain Hook is introduced as the main villain. In the "Great Fairy Rescue" we see a kid Wendy befriending Tinkerbell.

I could talk about how a film is capable of introducing a completely new character, making them the main protagonist and it's done it a way that it works! In the "The Legend of the Neverbeast" the protagonist isn't even Tinkerbell. It is one of her friends, Fawn, a talent animal fairy. And yet, this film is probably the best of all films in the franchise, in my opinion.
I like how some characters do bad things because they are misguided, don't know any better or just want to protect someone. Besides one or two characters (like the pirates), there isn't one that is completely evil. It's a nice twist from what i'm used to see in Disney films.
The writing of the films, while it isn't Pixar quality, is decent. The stories have good messages about friendship and how to be a better person. They have sweet and funny moments that made them enjoyable to watch.
Like i mentioned, there isn´t many characters that want to ¨destroy all the fairies¨. Despite the lack of real villains, the films have adventure elements in them which make them more entertaining to watch. This aspect can help boys that are repulsed by ¨girly stuff¨ to enjoy them more easily.
The stories are very lighthearted in tone. However, that doesn´t mean there aren´t sad and dark scenes. Don´t expect very deep messages about life like other animates movies have but at the same time that doesn´t make these movies bad either.
The soundtrack of these films are pretty nice too. I found the songs memorable. They have good lyrics for a spin-off series.
The animation looks good, if you compare them to other TV animated films. It's very well done. They have these small details that makes you appreciate how the animators put their effort in them.
There are also the shorts that add a bit more to the characters and the world. Some of them are funny and worth of watching.
-----------
I wrote this post with the intention of sharing my thoughts about the franchise. It isn't supposed to be a summary of each film because it would make the post too long.
I haven't seen many people talk about them in these last years. It's like it was one of those things that became forgotten over time. That's what motivated me to talk about them again because i think they are nice movies that worth of checking out.
