well i intended to go for a nice evening walk, ended up having a panic attack, ordering a couple of cocktails at the bougie bar, joining a jam session with a bunch of old hippies on the logan green (one of them gave me a handpainted wooden medallion which seems to be carved out of tree bark, strung on a length of yarn???), met a crustpunk train-hopping dude in town for the month (& his dog, in a leather-studded harness) who's lived in 45/50 states & a 44 yr old guy everyone called "the wizard" wearing a tattered, patch-covered robe who shares most of my parents' conspiracy theories & considers himself a latter-day prophet, he bought us sorbet & ice cream, wound up hanging out with them & staying up all night at their indescribably eclectic, cluttered, blood-spattered (!!!) apartment, belonging to 44 yr old guy's art curator father & decorated accordingly, smoking m*th & listening to music & talking (or rather listening to them rant/rave/recount stories from their incredibly wild lives), i gave them advice on applying for unemployment & medicaid & how to appear compliant enough w/ carceral psychiatric intervention so they won't section you without actually submitting to forced medication or institutionalization, especially if they assign you a case worker & do regular "wellness checks." also how to pass off certain aspects of behavioral dysregulation as executive dysfunction, get them to pay for an adhd evaluation, get an adderall IR scrip, sell the 30 mg pills (cite body weight, high doses of other psych meds as reason for higher dose; look sincere; play to systemic biases toward cis white men, unfortunately), & use the cash to buy m*th, if they'd prefer to keep doing that. you can also pass positive psychotic symptoms--agitation etc.--off as severe anxiety, especially if you have a history of trauma, & they will give you benzodiazepines. it is in their best interest to keep you docile, i.e. tranquilized, particularly if your past convictions & involuntary institutionalizations revolve around a pattern of aggressive behavior, & that's On The Record/there's a paper trail. Baseball. There are few subjects that illicit a more uniquely American response than our country’s pastime. It stands in rare air with iconic figures such as apple pie, fireworks, and tax evasion. Baseball is poised to try to become the first American sporting phenomenon to return to play following the initial, violent outbreak of the novel Coronavirus here in the States. However, Major League Baseball faces a set of unique challenges before play can be resumed. It stands to reason that testing, hygiene, potential exposure to the virus and state government bans on large gatherings would be the biggest hurdles the sport would face in an ambitious plan to return to play. And, sure, these issues will need to be addressed, but the biggest hurdle professional baseball faces by far isn’t viral in nature, it’s economic. And executive orders won’t determine the sport’s 2020 fate, contract law will.

Major League Baseball is an anomaly in the world of American sports. A ballclub will play 162 total games over the course of a season which traditionally starts in late March to Early May. In contrast, football teams in America play 16 total games, basketball teams play 82, and Major League Soccer teams play 34. Additionally, all of the aforementioned sports with the exception of baseball have a league-wide salary cap, a device that increases competitiveness by limiting funds a team has to sign potential big-name free agents based on a formula that takes into account league average earnings, payroll expenses and free agent contracts. Because no such cap exists in baseball, large market teams have an inordinate amount of cash tied up in superstar players. In fact, baseball players boast 14 of the 15 largest sports contracts in American history [4] by length, average annual value and gross amounts. It’s not uncommon to see a star player sign a 10 to 12 year contract once he’s available as a free agent, a term which outlives the playing career of the average football or basketball player. And the complexity of an average baseball contract stands in similarly rare air, with clauses for player performance, availability, signing bonuses, statistics, endorsements and potential deferments of salary payments being built into these multimillion-dollar mega deals by team lawyers and savvy agencies.

Despite the abundance of wealth in the game of baseball, both for the owners and for the players, the two parties have always had a particularly fraught professional and financial relationship. 1994 and 1995 saw the expiration of a collective bargaining agreement between players and owners that led to the costliest strike in sports history, cancelling nearly half of the baseball season and the entire postseason. Prior to the infamous 90’s strike, two such strikes over similar terms spotted seasons in the 80’s, and one more in the 70’s. [2] While all of these strikes centered mainly around player compensation, none of them had the weight of a national pandemic applying pressure to clubs and players, and no single season has ever been cancelled due to labor relations for its entirety. The extenuating circumstances of 2020 could lead to an historic stoppage of play that could extend beyond the 2020-2021 season.

On May 11th, 2020, MLB owners ratified a proposal for an 82-game season that would begin in early July and conclude by Halloween. [1] Among the concessions the sport would make to return to play were empty ballparks, with the new proposal prohibiting fans in the stands potentially for the entirety of the season due to concerns arising from the capacity for contagiousness that’s unique to COVID-19. MLB owners, in their proposal, outlined that clubs stood to lose billions of dollars in revenue in a half-season with fan-less games and wouldn’t be able to support the mega-contracts of superstar players without the revenue from ticket sales, concessions and parking. The compromise MLB lawyers proposed was a straight 50/50 revenue split between the owners and the players to return to play. To the average bystander, half and half likely seems fair in lieu of a completely lost season, especially in the middle of a pandemic. But the Players Union saw this as an unprecedented first in the sport, a de facto salary cap. And with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire at the conclusion of play in the 2020-2021 season, they fear that a revenue split would open the door to the introduction of a salary cap into the next agreement between players and owners. And on the other hand, one completely lost season could lead into another with the tense relationship between owners and players potentially spiraling to yet another strike that could endanger the 2021-2022 season. Two lost seasons could spell doom for a sport that’s been declining in popularity at an exponential rate. [3]

Further complicating the already complex proposals on the table are prior agreements and leaked emails, causing the legal and financial tête-à-tête between players and owners to spill into the mainstream. In March, Players Union lawyers agreed to prorated salaries proportionate to the amount of games played in the salvaged season. A further cut like the proposed 50/50 revenue split stands in direct violation to the prior agreement in the eyes of the Players Union. However, an email leaked to the press by Major League Baseball shows contacts between top labor relations lawyers from both parties agreeing that further sacrifices would need to be made if a return to play excluded fans in the seats. Despite this development, Players Union officials are adamant that the proposal put forth by the owners is a non-starter, and that baseball may well be cancelled for the 2020 season and beyond.

What this means for a multi-billion-dollar industry comprised of 30 different entities and 1200 players owed multiples of millions of dollars is anybody’s best guess, but the financial fallout could be historic. With contracts set to guarantee players money past the 2030 season, a complete collapse of the institutions of baseball in the early 2020’s could spell legal peril that would take years to mediate, arbitrate and settle. My guess is that for most people, creating your own work-at-home gig is more likely than an actual work-at-home job. Work-at-Home Jobs There are two ways you can approach the work-at-home arrangement. The first is to work to convert your current on-location job to a work-at-home arrangement. A lot of employers are not responsive to work-at-home, but it’s always worth trying. If you’re a highly valued employee, your employer may entertain the idea. But you’ll need to approach it from the angle that will benefit your employer – not you. After all, everyone – including your employer – is only motivated to do anything out of self-interest. If your pitch is all about how it will benefit you, it’s not likely to happen. For example, you might be able to sell your employer on the idea that you be more productive working from home. You can also point out that you won’t be occupying an office or cubicle (which is an additional cost to your employer). If, because of personal circumstances, you have no alternative but to convert to a work-at-home arrangement, you can try selling the employer on being able to retain your services as a result of the change. That’s a risky strategy, but it could work. If your employer isn’t agreeable, you’ll have to weigh the costs and benefits of making a job change. If you do, you’ll need to concentrate on jobs new employers are specifically offering as work-at-home arrangements. You’re bargaining position is never greater than just before you start a job. Kelly Services (full-time positions with a wide variety of employers in many different fields; you’ll need to specify work-at-home because they hire for all types of employment situations). Concentrix (full-time, part-time, and temporary positions in mostly technical occupations; there’s a strong emphasis on international operations, and you may be doing shift work as a result). United Healthcare (direct employer focusing on healthcare specializations – be sure to include “work-at-home” in your job search on the site). The FlexJobs list shows the potential for work-at-home positions. Use their list as a starting point, but also feel free to search the job boards using terms like “work-at-home”, “work from home”, “work remotely”, or similar descriptions. You may have to apply for dozens of positions to find one that will work for you. Also keep in mind you’ll be looking for a highly specialized work arrangement. It’ll be a bit like panning for gold. The Self-Employed Work-at-Home Route I’d love to tell you that there is a work-at-home job out there with your name on it, but that would be a gross exaggeration. If it were true, millions more people would be working from home. Most work-at-home job situations are unconventional arrangements and/or require highly specialized skills. Many will be only a hybrid arrangement, like two days at home, three in the office. In addition, the best paying positions naturally go to people who have the most experience. In most respects, it’s much like the traditional on-location job market, except that you’re working from home. And maybe only partially at that. For many people, in many circumstances, the only way to get into a work-at-home arrangement will be to create your own. That will involve some form of self-employment. Please don’t let the idea of self-employment scare you. In truth, you’re already self-employed, but if you hold a job, you only have one client. The trick to traditional self-employment is to provide service to multiple clients, or even to the general public. Put another way, it’s about taking what you do now on your job – or can do based on outside skills – and marketing it to a broader client base. Thanks to the Internet, there are more paths to the self-employment/work-at-home combination than ever before. That’s a good thing, because brick-and-mortar business operations are rapidly disappearing in all corners of the economy. Determine What Skills You Can Provide to Potential Clients One of the problems with working in the same job for a long time is that you can become blind to your own abilities. But if you’re serious about wanting to work-at-home, particularly from a self-employed angle, you’ll need to critically evaluate what you can do. That’s almost certainly going to be more than you ever imagined. Take the following steps: List all the skills you use on your current job. List all the skills you’ve used in previous jobs. Think hard about any personal skills you have that might be of value to someone else. Make a list of skills you think you can provide, even if you never have before. Number 4 needs a deeper discussion, because it really gets down to making an active choice as to what you’d like to do. A successful salesman/entrepreneur friend of mine is fond of saying you can if you think you can, and that’s become a phrase I live by. And lo and behold, it’s now my work-at-home full-time career. You don’t have to become a blogger or freelance blog writer like me, but the example still stands. Even if you’ve never done something before – but you have a strong desire to do it – there’s an excellent chance you’ll be able to convert it into an income generating venture. It’s what can happen when passion and desire come together. Once you’ve listed all your skills, choose those you’ll feel most comfortable providing. Make up a two or three paragraph description of your abilities with each skill. You can use these descriptions to market yourself to potential clients. In the third sentence, he’s stating how he can be the answer to the prospect’s problem. This angle is critical to marketing anything! The “hook” – the final sentence – is disarmingly inviting. He’s also very deliberate to emphasize “talk(ing) through YOUR needs!” Again, this emphasizes the point that providing any kind of self-employment related services is about the customer or the client’s needs first and foremost. Use this post as a template for your own client marketing campaigns. Using the Above Approach with Email Contact In generating business for myself, I’ve used a similar approach to Blake’s successfully. It works especially well with email contact to prospective clients. Unlike applying for formal jobs, where you create a cover carefully crafted letter then attach your resume, this simple approach is little more than a fishing expedition. It doesn’t need to be formal at all – in fact, the more casual it is, the better. Your first marketing task is to identify client need. If the need exists, there’s an excellent chance you’ll get a response. And I don’t mean a response rate of one out of 100, but closer to one out of 10 emails sent. The reason is because you’re approaching it from a client need standpoint. If there is no need, the best marketing pitch in the world won’t get you a new client. Use this approach as a door opener only. A one or two paragraph introduction is all that’s necessary. You don’t even need to attach your resume. If the client is interested, the contact will progress to additional emails, a request for additional information (such as a resume), or even a phone conversation. If the prospect is local, you might even have a face-to-face meeting. With any subsequent contacts, be sure to focus the conversation on identifying the client’s needs. Your job will be to convince the client that you can fill those needs, solve his problem, etc. And that’s simply a matter of talking about what you can do and how it can help the prospect. Approach Follow-Up Contact with the Right Mindset Don’t get all nervous and choked up about this either. The prospect is a person just like you – he or she has needs and insecurities just as you do. If you can find common ground, which is best done when you can be your true self, you’ll likely land a new client. And as is the case with any new endeavor, you’ll get better at it with experience. Sure, the first few times you do it it’ll be awkward. Then after you land your first one or two clients, it’ll get a lot easier. And once you reach that point, you’ll be on your way and the sky will be the limit. It will also help if you can set in your mind that no single prospective client is a make-or-break situation. If you fail to reach common ground with one prospect, keep the emails flowing, and move on to the next. One of the big advantages to mastering this marketing method is that once you do, you’ll be on your way. It’s almost like a wall you need to scale to get you from where you are to where you want to be. But if you think about it, it’s exactly what you do every time you apply for a new full-time job. The main difference is that prospecting for clients is a lot more casual, and lacks the do-or-die element that comes with a formal job search. Other Strategies to Create Work-at-Home Self-Employment Start as a side hustle. I would never recommend anyone with a full-time job quitting and transitioning immediately into work-at-home self-employment. The better approach is to do it as a side venture. Launch your email marketing campaign, pick up one or two clients, and move forward gradually. As you build your side business, you’ll eventually reach a point where you’ll realize you’ll need to take that “leap of faith” and move into the new venture full-time. But only you can know when the new venture and your finances will enable you to make that jump. In the end, it might never be anything more than a side venture. But that will work if all you’re looking for is the ability to earn additional income from home. Don’t be afraid to take on new challenges. A strange and miraculous transition starts to unfold when you begin working independently – you come to realize you can do more than you ever imagined. We learn by doing, and the more things you try, the more you’ll master. Naturally you shouldn’t take on any project or client that’s obviously well above your skill set. But it’s perfectly okay to reach up to the next level. Add new skills. The more skills you can provide, and the better you are at them, the more clients you can get, the more money you earn. Invest some time – and even some money – in improving the skills you have, and adding new ones. As you do, your market value will rise. Always ask for referrals. If you get a client, and the arrangement goes well – even if it isn’t ongoing – ask the client if she knows anyone else who may need your services. This is a way of generating warm leads for prospective new clients. Final Thoughts on How to Create Work-at-Home Gigs Unless you’re searching strictly for a formal full-time work-at-home job, think in terms of gigs. Those aren’t jobs, but income generating arrangements. And that’s really what earning a living is all about – creating income streams. That’s what you can do by approaching work-at-home from the self-employment angle. I realize that a lot of the suggestions and strategies I’ve put forth in this article are likely to take you out of your comfort zone. But that’s practically a requirement for any major change you want to make in your life. And if work-at-home is what you want to do with your life, you should have all the motivation you need to put yourself out there. Presentations

 Euthanasia - I also did a research paper on euthanasia in high school, 10th grade to be specific.  I found the topic to be extremely important because I don’t think it’s fair to tell someone they cannot kill themselves, especially if they are terminally ill.  One question that was brought up in class that I disagreed with was about if doctors did not want to perform euthanasia.  Legalizing euthanasia does not force doctors to perform it.  If cancer patient X is ready go and he asks doctor A to euthanize him, he can say no, I don’t feel comfortable with that I’m sorry, cancer patient X can then call up doctor B and ask him for the favor, doctor B also has the ability to chose whether he would want to perform the procedure or not, no one is ever forced to do something they don’t want to do just because its legal.  That is like saying that because marijuana is legal in Colorado, I am obligated to smoke it while I’m there.  Another issue that I feel needed to be more addressed was the topic of mental illness, such as depression.  People with depression are suffering as well, should they be able to be considered as candidates for euthanasia???

Nurture vs. Nature - I totally agree that it is a combination of the two that determine how a person turns out.  Coming from an accepting family, I could be straight, gay, trans, they wouldn’t care.  The fact that they are accepting had no influence whatsoever on my sexual preference, being straight or gay or trans is something you are born with, it’s not something you can chose, or that can be influenced on by your environment.  An example where nurture is a cause would be something like the food you like and dislike.  My mom and my aunt can both cook, for the most part, I never had to settle for ordinary food.  So when I go to my friend’s house for dinner, and she tells me shes making a pasta chicken dish, I have high expectations.  When she pulls out a bag of who knows what from the freezer, where all she has to do is warm it up in a pan, I cannot even begin to swallow the mushy chicken before I gag.  I was not born disliking mushy chicken, I was raised with non- mushy chicken so that is what I like.  Nature vs. Nurture at it’s finest. 

Mental Effects Of Sports Injuries - It has happened multiple times over the years where a star athlete gets injured and when he/she returns he/she never seems to play as good as he/she did before.  Could it be physical, probably, it’s like when after you drop your phone and after a while, sometimes the screen isn't as responsive as it used to be.  Could it be mental, without a doubt.  Everyone has such high expectations for a returning star athlete, sometimes it can be difficult to live up to expectations even when you were the one that set them so high.  I think it can also be difficult to get past the fear of getting injured again, sort of like a PTSD type situation. For a quarterback coming back from an extreme injury, he may be more prone to try and get rid of the ball faster, leading to mistakes, in order to protect himself from getting hit again.

Electoral College - Even after learning about how our government works multiple times through my years in school, I still do not fully understand how it works.  From this presentation I have learned that the electoral college prevents a tie between candidates.  I also learned that there has NEVER been a tie.  I do know that if the electoral college was not in place during the 2016 elections, we would not have an embarrassing idiot representing our country for the next 4 years.  SO, with that being said I am totally in favor of getting rid of the electoral college.

Breed Specific Legislation - I completely agree that BSL is wrong and should not be a thing but I do understand where these cities are coming from.  One thing that the presenter stated that I don’t necessarily agree with is that the temper of dogs like pitbulls is solely dependent on the way it’s raised.  I do believe that the way a dog is raised and treated has a large impact on how the dog reacts in different situations, unfortunately some breeds of dogs are genetically prone to be more aggressive.  With the right owner and training, this wouldn't be a problem but more often than not, families get dogs and don’t realize how much work they really need to put into them.  Even with dogs like golden retrievers, the most family friendly dog, they can still be aggressive.  At the end of the day, a dog is still an animal and will do whatever it feels like.

Euthanasia vs. Physician Assisted Suicide - I did not realize there was a difference between the two.  If I was terminally ill, I think I would rather take part in physician assisted suicide where I could go home with my loved ones and die peacefully in my own home.  Then again, I’m not quite sure I could do it, i’m not sure I would have the balls to kill myself no matter how ill I may be.

The Effects of Body Language on Mental Health - I think it would be interesting to study the ways different types of body languages can be perceived by different people in different cultures.  I was not aware that body language has an effect on mental health and after this presentation I am still not really clear on how it does but I am very curious so I may look into this myself.

Effects of Media on Obesity - I enjoyed this topic because I believe obesity is a growing problem that is becoming widely excepted because of the media.  I’m all about body positive and loving yourself no matter how you look, but I think people need to realize that problems with obesity should stem from health not looks.  Its great if you’re overweight and still confident with how you look, but that should not be your main concern, people need to be asking themselves, ‘Am I healthy?’ NOT ‘Do I look good?’  One show that immediately comes to mind is My Big Fat Fabulous Life.  This woman Whitney is extremely overweight and the show follows her life and the different struggles she faces being overweight and how she over comes them.  Whitney is constantly acknowledging the fact that she is ‘fat’ and that she doesn’t care because she is happy with her body and her life.  I think its awesome that she is happy but I think it is important that she looks at her weight as a health risk because there is no way she can be healthy being that overweight.  A persons health should always take priority over their looks.

Figure Skating: Artistry or Athleticism - I think it’s rather clear that figure skating takes a ton of athleticism and strength, I’d love to see anyone that disagrees try to do some of the stuff these skaters can do.  Whats even crazier is the fact that they not only have to perform wild stunts but they also have to look pretty while doing it. 

Common Core - I have always been really good at math and when my younger sister brought home her common core math homework I could not figure it out.  I think they have really good intentions with common core but the concepts they’re trying to teach are too complicated for students so young.

The Importance of Firearm Education - I don’t think people really understand how dangerous guns are.  Firearm education should always be required when purchasing and owning a gun.  Even the most educated firearm owners find themselves involved in gun accidents, humans make mistakes and that’s why safety precautions should always be taken.  Without proper education these accidents are much more likely to occur and that is a tragedy no family wants to face.

Police Brutality (Is it an important issue in America?) - America has the highest police brutality rates according to this presentation.  This particular student seems to be focusing mainly on the brutality on minorities.  From her statistics I gathered that 62% of the population is white and 24% of the population is black.  49% of the victims of police brutality were white while 13% of police brutality victims were black.  She stated that blacks were 2.5x-5x more likely to be a victim of police brutality but if you do the math she is wrong, in fact whites are more likely to be victims of police brutality based on her numbers.  What I feel the focus of her essay should be on, is the way the media turns police brutality into a story about race rather than focusing on what really occurred. 

The Impacts of Standardized Testing on Education - To rid of standardized tests would be difficult because we need some sort of way to test the knowledge of students.  I do not think the results of these score should have a major role in the evaluations of teachers.  While how a student performs does somewhat show how good a teacher is, there is more that needs to be taken into consideration.  Some student just do not apply themselves, no matter how much extra help a teacher can try to give, they just wont apply themselves in class or on standardized tests.

In a previous blog, we answered many of the planning and lore questions from the community. Today, we’ll focus on the TUGv2 and engine remake questions.

TUGv2

Can you give an overview of the new TUG in a couple of short paragraphs, as if to new potential customers? What's the "elevator pitch" description of the game?

The game takes place in procedurally generated worlds filled with floating islands that are enriched with resources, populated with diverse cultures and held together by a deeply rooted narrative.

Players slowly discover the beginnings of their universe through interactions and relationships developed within the game as well as uncovering the history of their own purpose for being.

Through a series of relationships and a string of choices our players determine their friends, their enemies and their eventual place with their creators.

With regards to features:

Will we see any of the Kickstarter stretch goals being developed?

Yes, without question, however timing is subject to the most impact it will have in early development for the community to experience.

It’s been mentioned that manipulation of voxels in v2 will differ from that of v1? How much so, and what will the new system be like?

Voxel manipulation will be available in our creative mode. During gameplay the focus shifts more to surviving within the world and building up a home world using prefab objects. Though, this may change to be more robust, once we have fully developed the game, and advanced some concepts of usability. Still, this is largely TBD

What other features are likely to change from v1 (crafting, combat, building etc.)?

Generally speaking, each feature has undergone revisions to create a more simplified / optimized approach to how they worked and to improve the user experience. We have done our best to keep the player in the game and not in the menus.

What are the initial focuses of TUGs use of AI?

AI plays a vital role in the experience players will have. Our focus on AI is one that feels alive with respect to how creatures behave in the wild, how companions seek to help the player as they build their worlds, and how enemies respond to our actions during combat. At each interaction we a setting a goal that keeps the player immersed in the world and the event that they are a part of.

Are there any features which investors have decided on?

Investors have played a supportive role in our goals and vision. They have allowed us the freedom to design and develop the game based on our recommendation for what works best for the world of TUG.

How much input will the community get on new and current features? How will Nerd Kingdom receive this input?

TBD, we will be leveraging a lot of contribution from the community from our exposed tools, as a medium to allow us to understand real insights from play, and reward those that assist in experimentation. This is a large motivational factor in why we have been pushing harder on ease of use for tools, and platform.

With regards to modding:

Can we add more complicated custom models to build with, e.g., a statue/non-voxel based?

You will have the ability to add custom models of all shapes and sizes. Though to work best with the game there will be a list of guidelines for those that want to add their own custom content.

This Update showed off lots of what NK has been working on over the last year; is there anything you’d like to give an extra highlight or detail on?

As excited as we are about the game we’re building on top of a great set of technologies, we are super excited about being able to develop the tools and pipeline that will empower our users with the ability to quickly and easily mod everything that we do.

Are there any plans to help push community driven development?

Along with the tools to support and broaden community development we also have in the works a platform that simplifies and organizes everything for a community to be built around.

The Engine Remake

At a time when updates were starting to become a regular thing (0.8.9), a decision was made to remake the engine. Why?

During development of TUG we reached a point where there were several opportunities to create a new game engine which could be supported by a full suite of tools for modding and game development. Recognizing the scope of our plans for providing a platform for players and creators we took the chance and are now beginning to use the tools and tech that drove us to depart from the old and get started with the new. It was a big decision then and one that will continue to be what supports all of our adventures moving forward.

With regards to hardware specs:

What are the expected hardware requirements of TUG at release?

TBD, actively testing and working towards lowest specs possible, but as we have stated for years, it’s a balancing act

What are the new capabilities of the engine, that the old one could not do?

TBD, but can offer a write-up from tech team in an upcoming update with some samples of work, and capabilities.

 How easy will it be to modify the engine going forwards, both from a developer and a modders perspective?

TBD, with recent implementations of the development pipeline, we have made modding and development significantly faster. Which impacts our ability to create content, and the ability of others within the community.
