college students next to me having a discussion about what constitutes latinidad and their defining point of it is that the person must speak spanish. you are NOT serious people. lunch ruined
#they are putting Anya Taylor Joy as an example because quoting them she speaks spanish unlike other people#meanwhile she grew up as a very posh person in england and regularly gets casted to play explicitly white european women?#see: the north man#and rumor has it she was apparently a bully growing up in england. which doesn't sound like the behavior of someone#who grows up othered because of their place of origin but instead someone with enough social capital to get away with that#within a global sphere she's obviously seen and she's had the experiences of a white woman#so yes she was born in LatAm and has argentinian parents and speaks spanish but socially and culturally a person like this#is very removed from a latinoamerican context given that she's integrated into european society and received as their own#but since speaking spanish is the defining factor according to them she's just like us ... girl ...#sorry this was not the part that pissed me off but when they arrived at this point it's when I knew the plot was lost
