Y/n looked over at Douxie. The blue of his hair was starting to fade into a duller hue. While not as bright and bold as his personality, it was still very nice to look at. This muted blue was softer, almost comforting in a way. Y/n found herself running her fingers through it. It wasn’t just the color that was soft. Like feathers in her hand, she gently caressed the strands. The duller color made him look tired, older, and the permanent bags under his eyes didn’t help. She placed her hand on his face and ran her thumb over a said eye bag. He gave her a very subdued smile in return. His sunken eyes were so beautiful. Her favorite color. Or colors, one should say. They were like an earth toned opal. Y/n’s hand drifted down his face. She used her thumb to explore his cheekbones, tracing constellations in his freckles, and finally settled on his mouth, tracing his cupid’s bow. Douxie couldn’t help but break the stoic face he was trying to hold.
“As much as I hate to ask this, and I really do, but will you please cease what you’re doing, My Love. I’m trying to drive here.”
“Yes, I would also like to ask you to stop, miss L/n. Not wrecking the ship is worth you canning your pda for a while.” Archie added.
Y/n pulled her hand back and exaggeratedly pouted. She teasingly stuck her tongue out at Archie for good measure, but couldn’t help but dissolve into a snicker right after so it wasn’t very effective. But really, it wasn’t her fault that Douxie’s beautifully sculpted face was right there and demanding to be touched. She tried to distract herself by focusing on the scenery around them. North Pennsylvania was delightful, so it’d be a shame if she spent the whole time that they flew through it looking at nothing but Douxie. There was plenty of time for her to do that the rest of her life. It’s not like she didn’t have every freckle memorized already. Every single adorable little dot. Right, Pennsylvania. Appalachia. Y/n was a little disappointed they didn’t manage to go through West Virginia, being as north as they were. She really wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Country roads.
The mountains were hard to transverse through, so Douxie took the boat up high in the clouds. A little too high. The oxygen was thin. While this didn’t affect Archie the dragon or Nari the plant goddess, Douxie and Y/n were getting a bit woozy. Neither would get altitude sickness to the point of dying, thanks to that good ol’ curse of immortality, but their minds weren’t exactly operating at high speeds here. They passed through a low hanging cloud in a puff of fog.
Though they were over it, just being in the range of Appalachia felt odd. There was a presence that clung to the mountains. Even flying high up in the air, one felt as though they were being watched. Like the thousand eyes of the forest were upon them. Looking down below, hanging over the edge like Douxie hated her to do, Y/n saw a herd of deer that might as well be ants. Watching over the herd was a bigger, or maybe closer, stag on a peak of some sort. His antlers were covered in crimson. Y/n hoped he was just shedding.
There were pathways cutting through the trees below, some roads, some manmade trails, some rivers, some troll trails, and some deer trails. Some that wound around in endless curves, some that seemed to start from nowhere and stop at nothing, some that went round and round in a circle, and some that crossed over each other, effectively creating a maze of sorts. Y/n didn’t know why, but she was glad she was above the trees and not in them. Something within her gut told her that as beautiful as the scenery was, she did not wish to experience it first-hand. The deer below were beautiful, but there was something not quite right about them. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it. She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to turn down a game of ninepins either, and she could really go for a drink.
Douxie’s brain may have been foggy, but he could certainly see Y/n hanging over the edge again, tantalizing him. He couldn’t help but imagine 174 ways for it to end badly. He’d been pretty passive about this before but now that they were so high up, he had no choice but to be up front now.
“Y/n, My Love,” Y/n turned her attention to him, which also pulled her weight more towards the boat than the sky. Good. “do you mind being back near the center of the ship? I really don’t like you draping yourself over the railing like that.”
Y/n was getting sick and tired of people always trying to keep her away from edges, advising her not to climb the mountain, telling her to stay inside when there was only a light rainstorm. She could handle it. She wasn’t a fucking porcelain doll. She was not wearing a fancy gown that suffocated her, she could speak, her lips were not perfectly painted on. And she wouldn’t shatter. “Relax, Dewdrop. I’m fine. I’m not just gonna go skydiving for kicks. If anyone has had a penchant for falling through the sky recently, it’s been you, Hisirdoux. I can catch myself with anti-gravity spells, like you taught me. Besides, we walk across tall, crumbly, ancient non-osha compliant walkways all the time. You never had a problem then.”
“Well,” He huffed, “it would be one thing if I was there next to you, but I’m not, so could you please just try to stay safe when I can’t reach you?” Y/n was taken about at how quick his tone went from annoyed to desperate. She furrowed her brows. Doux sighed, “Look, it frightens me, okay. I know that nothing will happen, but what if it does? I can’t- I can’t lose you.” His tone got even feebler in his pleading. “And there’s so many ways to lose you. Especially with the Order on our tails. Please, just give me this peace of mind for at least one thing.”
Y/n stepped away from the railing, crossing over to Douxie. He opened his arm and she nestled into his side. Pressing her head against his chest, she mumbled, “Absolutely. I’ll just—I’ll just stay here then. Next to you. I’m sorry I worried you. That was the last thing I wanted to do.”
He leaned down to press a kiss to the top of her head. “Thank you, My Darling.”
~ ~ ~
The dipped down south to go through the top of Maryland and completely through Delaware to get to the south of New Jersey, in place of just going through Philadelphia. The city of brotherly love was not on the itinerary. Philly, and the top of New Jersey, were just too densely populated to take a magic boat through. The airspace was filled with airplanes and skyscrapers. It was easier to go the roundabout way.
As they passed between Philly and Lancaster, they went by fantastically named towns such as Paradise the city, where the girls are pretty, Bird In Hand, Blue Ball, and Intercourse. Stellar. Y/n was starting to really like Pennsylvania. It was cursed ground. She made sure to get photographic evidence of every road sign. Douxie was happy to pose with them.
They took a pit stop in a town called Peach Bottom before leaving Pennsylvania. Y/n wanted to go through New Texas, since she was curious how somewhere in the original colonies could be a new Texas, but Nari could sense a river nearby, and wanted to seek it out. Peach Bottom. It was a cozy little town with a power plant that was dumping it’s waste into the riverside it was built on. Toxic river. Fun. Y/n made Douxie explain to Nari why she couldn’t get near the river or touch any of the water. Y/n wouldn’t have been able to stay as calm as Douxie could. There was nothing happening in the rural Pennsylvanian town. Nothing special about it unless you counted their countless nuclear admissions. The locals didn’t care for strangers, and that was alright with them cause they didn’t want to be here for any more than necessary for a restroom break. Dinner could wait.
The top of Maryland was great. Lots of rivers to make it up to Nari. There was just, an incredibly large walmart near the line. Just absolutely humongous whopper walmart. A leach whose name doesn’t even deserve to be capitalized, thank you very much autocorrect.
It took less than half an hour to fly right through the top of Delaware. Hi Delaware, bye Delaware.
Soon they were on the coast of south New Jersey, headed for a sleepy town called Monty. Monty was a town along the Cohansey, split across it with quite an impressive bridge between the two sides. As soon as the bridge became visible on the skyline, Y/n grabbed Douxie’s sleeve and tugged excitedly. She looked up at him with a big smile. Rest. At last, they were going to get to rest. Y/n made herself busy calling Jim to let him know that they were there so he could call someone else to let them know that they were there and to wait by the entrance for them. Neither Douxie nor Y/n had a horngazzle on them at the moment. Y/n had had one in her possession back in Arcadia, being book club buddies with Blinky, but alas that was destroyed along with their bookstore.
They hid that damn magic boat in the forest. While they did plan on staying with the trolls for a few weeks, Douxie didn’t put it back in its glass bottle quite yet, cause they were in fact taking it into New York not tomorrow but the next day. He covered the ground around it with a few more wards than necessary. Y/n threw up an illusion spell around it, as she had been all the other times they’d just left it in the woods, and thought the wards were overkill but didn’t say anything. They started on the trek to the base of the bridge.
The troll at the entrance greeted them cordially. He was a dark green color, with two massive horns resembling those of a longhorn cow, chiseled stone tattoos, and no clothes other than a tiny loincloth which made everyone but Nari uncomfortable. He let them in with flourish, as if he’d always wanted to do this and practiced it.
“Welcome to NEW JERSEY TROLLMARKET.”
Y/n was surprised at how well the town had come along within the two months the trolls had occupied the cavern. It wasn’t the Trollmarket she had known, there was no Blinky and no library, but still marvelous. The new hearthstone glowed warmly, very much alive and not making zombies. While looking pretty similar to the old Trollmarket, with a multitude of shops and homes carved into the mineral covered walls and formations, there was a sort of human touch to it now. Claire definitely had a hand in the planning and maybe the decorative features too. Or perhaps Jim. Y/n wouldn’t put it past the boy to be the one who designed the very elaborate crystal art flower bed she was looking at. Or that weirdly steampunk bridge. Funny thing, a bridge under a bridge.
Dictatious met them soon after they came in to show them around and to where they would be staying. The tour he gave them basically just included him walking them through the main street, waving his arms to various places and vaguely saying that they were shops but not what they sold, pointing out the pub, and then took them straight to their accommodations. Since the home that had been occupied by Blinky, Jim, and Claire was now empty, they’d be staying there, with the place practically to themselves. Dictatious also lived in said home, but rarely stuck around it for long now that his brother was gone.
“Alright, here’s your nest.”
Since Dictatious still slept in the nest that he shared with Blinky, he had given them Jim and Claire’s. The nests were just rocky bowls carved into the floor of the room, with a few comfort items. Thankfully, Jim and Claire had left theirs full of pillows and a couple thick cushions they must have taken from a couch. Unconventional, but better than sleeping on literal solid rock. Speaking of couches, there were way too many couches spread across the apartment. This entire place only had two rooms, a large living area and a nestroom, and yet there were five couches. Not to mention the extra-large easy chair Dic was currently lounging in. Okay, so one of said couches was technically a love seat, but still. There was no kitchen, which was surprising due to this being Jim Lake Jr’s home, and no table besides the one that three of the sofas were gathered around and a paper-covered work desk against a corner. There were glowing crystal lamps all throughout, lighting the house. All in all, interesting interior design decisions. The kids had definitely been trying to make it a more homey human dwelling but had limited options.
Nari nestled into the nest, happy that there were no blankets to smother her. Not even a minute passed and she was out like a light. Douxie and Y/n sat on one of the couches in the nestroom, watching the veggie lady snooze. Archie made himself comfy in Douxie’s lap, who absent mindedly stroked his familiar’s fur. They were underground now. Surrounded by inorganic matter. Some of that inorganic matter could fight, would be willing to fight, would probably be disappointed if there wasn’t a fight. The little devil on Douxie’s shoulder wasn’t really having to work hard. His stomach growled. They had opted to just not stop for dinner in favor of plowing right through their trip route. It was late, and dark, and Douxie really just wanted them to have a roof over their head before midnight. And now they did.
He looked over at Y/n. They had been a couple for an entire day now and he had yet to take her on a proper date. What a bad boyfriend he was. It’s not like Archie would want to come with them or anything either, since he filled himself with birds that didn’t know what hit them while they traveled. The dragon had even caught a hawk at one point, which wasn’t as impressive as it sounds, since Archie was a much faster flyer. He would be happy to watch Nari for them, surely. And Dic had given them a horngazzle so they could come and go as they pleased. It was settled then.
“Arch, watch Nari for us, please, we’ll be back in a pinch,” He grabbed Y/n’s hand to pull her off the couch, “C’mon, My Love, we’re going on a date.”
~ ~ ~
Turns out the only thing open past midnight in small town New Jersey was a waffle house. The perfect date. Y/n had thought it funny to watch Douxie try and deactivate all the fresh wards he had put around the boat. He had to be careful where he put his feet, and it was like he was doing a silly little dance. Ward trap ballet of his own barely thought-out design. At one point he stepped backwards to admire his work, triggering the ward behind him, and Y/n had to free him from the net. Lucky it was just a net one.
Entering the waffle house, they slid into the nearest booth, the one near the jukebox. They ordered what else but waffles. The food of kings and hungover college kids. Not just plain waffles, though. Douxie got chocolate chip and Y/ got strawberry, and they were going to combine them to make chocolate covered strawberry waffles. Everyone knows chocolate covered strawberries were the most romantic food, why else would they push them so hard around Valentine’s.
Douxie leaned in with his head in his hand. “So, tell me about yourself.”
Y/n laughed, decided to play into this bit. “Oh, I’m just a California lass, on her way to New York. Things have been crazy lately. Went to a very convincing renaissance faire, I’m harboring a fugitive, my roommate keeps hitting on me. Very stressful. Sure am lucky I came across you, Mr. Handsome.”
“Lucky indeed.” Doux snickered.
Y/n pointed to the jukebox behind Doux, which he twisted around to see. “Have you ever heard ‘Last Night I Saw Elvis At Waffle House’?”
“No?”
“Oh, it’s a banger.” She got out of the booth and put a coin in the juke, making her selection. She slid back in with a Cheshire cat grin and Doux was kind of scared now, actually. As the current song ended and the song that they were waiting for began. Well, it was a song. About seeing Elvis in a waffle house. With a country tune he supposed someone thought was catchy in order for them to have recorded this. Douxie didn’t know what he had expected.
“Uh, wow.”
“Yeah, Ain’t it something. I loved this song when I was knee high to a grasshopper. All the waffle house jams really.”
“Your aunt let someone bring you to a waffle house? That’s not very proper.” Douxie chuckled.
“Oh, no, actually. Um, this was before my dad passed and my mother, ah, slipped.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
Douxie rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m sorry I mentioned it.”
“No, no. I’m fine Dewdrop. I can talk about it, really. And, like you said the other day, I’ve been focusing on the Now Love.” The silly waffle house themed song was still playing despite the air of seriousness that had fallen over the duo. It helped keep Y/n from getting too sad and dwelling on the memories she had just brought up. It was comical, really. A waffle house song keeping her grounded. She rubbed the palm of Douxie’s hand. “I still mourn my family, but it’s been so long that the pain’s but a dull ache now. As long as I don’t think too hard about it. If anyone knows about mourning it’d be you, Doux. I can’t imagine meeting hundreds of friends over my lifetime just to watch them all grow old and die while you just have to go on living.” She paused, eyes drifting downwards, “But I suppose that’ll be my fate anyways.”
Douxie reached over and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “It’s actually not that bad, once you get used to it. You just have to enjoy every bit of time you get. That’s what makes other magic friends so valuable, there are some permanent players on your team.” He let his hand linger under her jaw, pulling her face closer to his, “You have me. We have each other. We’re family. We always have been.”
“So I hate to interrupt, but, waffles.” The server put the plates she had been holding down onto the table. Douxie and Y/n pulled away from each other quick as lightning, sitting up straight in their seats. “Again, sorry guys.”
“Thank you.” The two chorused to their fleeting form in embarrassment. Their faces were fire engine red. Archie was right, they did get a little carried away with the pda. It may have been 12:28am in a waffle house but they were still in public. Grabby hands needed to be kept to themselves.
After dinner, neither Doux nor Y/n could bring themselves to go home quite yet, despite the nagging feeling to return to Nari. They loitered around woods, unsure of what to do. Leaning against the parked boat, Douxie got an idea. He put on the music on his phone, turning the volume all the way up and positioning it so it’d put out a better sound the best he could. The playlist he selected was actually the one he had of songs that reminded him of his beloved. Copying what Y/n had done last night, he held out his hand.
“Come on, dance with me, My Darling.”
Douxie twirled Y/n around in the night breeze that blew through the trees. This song was much faster than the one they danced to last time, and there was more energy between them. Y/n’s laugh echoed through the forest. This was a lot of fun, she could do it all night. Honestly, she could do anything all night if it was with Douxie. He lifted her up, like she weighed nothing. Seriously, how strong was this noodle armed wizard. She threw her arms around his neck, looking down to meet his eyes, a rare thing. Y/n kissed his nose, eliciting a happy giggle from his mouth.
He should have put her back down by now. Instead, he still held her up, transfixed by her face ringed in moonlight, like a halo. She noticed the awestruck look on his face, kissing him properly, yet it did nothing to pull him out of his stupor. He had one thought running over and over in his mind. Marry me. But, he couldn’t say that. A proposal had to be special, not after a waffle house date. Their first date, mind you. He couldn’t possibly jus-
“Marry me, Dewdrop?”
Well apparently he couldn’t but she absolutely could.
It took him a moment to take in her words, shocked out of his overthinking. The biggest grin spread across his face as he giddily spun her around in his arms. He finally put her feet back on the ground, crashing his lips into hers. Y/n brought a hand up to drag through his hair and left the other to slide down his back. No battle for dominance, Douxie’s tongue was definitely the one leading here. He just couldn’t believe it. It was if she had read his mind. It was still hard for him to believe she wanted him in the first place, but this much? If this was the afterlife he must surely be in heaven. One makeout session later, Y/n rasped “So I’m guessing that’s a yes?”
“Let’s sign the papers tomorrow.”
~ ~ ~
Despite the uneasy feeling they had both had about leaving Nari alone for so long, she was perfectly fine. In fact she hadn’t even moved an inch form the spot they left her in. Like they never left at all. Archie was asleep on that couch, as peaceful as ever. They’d tell him the news in the morning.
Y/n climbed into the nest and dragged Douxie down with her. After getting comfy on the array of cushions, he opened his arms and she nestled into his chest. She could feel his hands rest on her back. Perfect. It was calming, listening to his heartbeat, being lulled to sleep with the rhythm that gave proof that her beloved was alive. A steady beat that reassured her he was there, he was there. He wouldn’t leave her again.

Clouds Cities Have Silver Linings
Such a strange sensation it is, to be so close to yet so far from nature.
Surrounding me are tall, aerodynamic buildings in reflective chrome. Wonderfully clean, perpendicular streets with slow-paced, orderly traffic. Illuminating dome-shaped light fixtures and artificial flora. And, of course, clouds—endless, infinite vistas of clouds drifting by the borders of this floating metropolis. But even in the dreamlike world of Alpha Noventia, I feel detached.
Homesickness seems crazy when your home is as prestigious and expertly-designed as this one is. I should be kissing the airborne ground I walk on.
When humanity had the idea to build a city in the clouds, it was unchallenged. Floating cities made far more sense than underground ones. With overpopulation growing every day, it felt natural we would look to empty, unfettered spaces to move into. Then those climate scientists figured that massive tanks of gases could be buoyant in certain atmospheres, and history was made.
Unfortunately, there’s no going back for those who want out. Too much was invested into bringing me here. The cost alone to return me to New York would outweigh, in the committee’s eyes, any desire I have to leave. After all, there’s so many who would kill to be up in my place, though I’d kill to escape it. Those picturesque, otherworldly sunsets in the brochure swayed me too soon.
Join civilization's flight to the clouds, an innovative new heaven!
Despondent, I halt near the edge of the outer reaches of the city, far into the forbidden zone for Rank-C colonists. With the sudden atmospheric winds that blow through here, one is in extreme danger of falling over the barriers. This danger, however, is no warning to me.
That’s why I’m here.
Throwing up my arms, I let the sweeping winds carry me off the edge of the city, sans resistance. Falling to one’s death is a quick, painless end.
And it would be...if I was skydiving to my death on Earth.
On Venus, clouds have a copper lining, what with the furiously-amber skyline, constant lightning strikes, or heat that’ll vaporize me long before hitting the ground. Rapidly, I feel my suit begin to scorch, picturing meteors combusting on reentry back on Earth. Unlike its habitable upper layer, Venus’s surface pressure is 100 times that of Earth's, its surface temperature 467C. These extremes are so intimidating that they’re incomprehensible to me.
7 other planets in the solar system, yet they chose this one to house our second home…
Maybe that explains my disillusionment with utopia. How can one feel safe and protected, knowing the uninhabitable maelstrom that lies below? Dangling over a fire, seeing the rising smoke of its debris—smoke in the shape of clouds.
There’s nothing quite as vicious and inhospitable as the Venusian surface.
But things in life are always different on a surface level.

419: The Rebel Set
I’ve got two off-topic intro stories I can tell here and neither one is worth it so I’ll tell them both. One is that I did in fact have a four-hour layover in Chicago once. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough time to do anything but wander around the airport, eat soft pretzels, and be mildly impressed that they have an entire dinosaur skeleton in Terminal C. No way I could have fit robbing an armored car in there. Also, although I am from Canada I have never been to the Canadian Exhibition – but my grandmother once had a vision of Jesus there, so I guess it is a great place to meet celebrities.
Master Criminal Mr. Tucker hires three nobodies – an out-of-work actor, an unpublished writer, and a guy whose mom was famous for something – to commit a robbery for him. Then, when they’re all stuck on a train with him, he sets about murdering them one by one so that he won’t have to share the money. It worked for the Joker, right? He stages Famous Jr’s suicide and throws Writer off the train, but Actor (a guy named Johnny, married to a woman named Jeannie) gets wise and tries to turn himself in to the police. Somehow or other it all ends in a drawn-out foot chase through a train yard in which Tucker kicks Johnny’s ass repeatedly, until finally electrocuting himself to death. Johnny goes to jail.
Did this movie somehow switch titles with The Beatniks by accident? There are beatniks in this one, whereas there were none in that film, and there were rebels in The Beatniks, while the protagonists of The Rebel Set don’t seem very rebellious. Weird.
In many ways, The Rebel Set reminds me of a Coleman Francis film. For starters, there’s the dreariness of the sets and photography. The Beatnik Bar looks like it’s in somebody’s basement, it’s probably dim and chilly and the poetry is bad, and it just isn’t somewhere we want to hang out. The train never looks like a train, mostly because nobody bothers to pretend it’s moving – anybody who’s been on a train knows it’s never a smooth ride. The roadside where they stage the accident doesn’t look like it’s anywhere near Chicago (unless this is set in the same universe as The Beginning of the End). The railway yard looks like John Carradine is just around the corner singing Night Train to Mundo Fine.
For another thing, The Rebel Set is full of little moments that make no sense at all. Like the rich couple who decide to slum in the beatnik bar, where the husband heckles the one-eyed poet until they get thrown out. What the hell was that? It had nothing to do with the plot. Why were they even in there? Or how about the two ditzy old ladies on the train who sit around and have strange conversations with Tucker and the conductor? There was a moment when I honestly wondered if they were undercover cops but they were just… there, like the kids in The Beast of Yucca Flats feeding soda pop to the pigs. I think they were comic relief, but it’s kind of hard to say when they were so conspicuously not funny.
How about the conductor wanting the Writer to help him with his memoirs? The Writer takes his card but obviously doesn’t mean to call him, because he considers the material beneath him. Again, I think this is supposed to be funny, but it’s not. The conductor (who is later insulted again by the old women when he won’t stay and listen to them yammer) doesn’t seem like somebody whose life story is likely to be as interesting as he thinks, but the rude brush-off he gets does not make us like the Writer, either. I’m honestly not sure we’re supposed to like any of these guys.
Who is this stuff for, anyway? Is the scene with the rich couple intended for the ‘creeps’ or the ‘squares’? The couple are presented as pompous and patronizing, even the wife, but the beatniks are a bunch of fatalistic losers who are nearly incomprehensible. The one-eyed poet is clearly meant to be an object of fun, as is the ditzy waitress. The scene seems to be trying to have it both ways, going ‘lol, stupid rich people!’ and ‘lol, weirdos!’ at the same time, and therefore alienates both.
Also like a Coleman Francis film, The Rebel Set manages to squeeze all the excitement out of things that should constitute action and suspense. Red Zone Cuba had us confused during an invasion and falling asleep over daring escapes. The Rebel Set tries to have chase scenes, daring heists, and murders, but it mostly just makes us go, “huh?” The heist proceeds according to plan, with no real feeling that the criminals are at risk of discovery. The fight between Johnny and Famous Jr. on the train is predictable dialogue followed by clumsy fisticuffs. The chase at the railway yard goes on, and on, and on, while Johnny gets repeatedly beat up by an old guy dressed as a priest.
The only scene that comes near working the way it’s supposed to is when Tucker throws Writer off the train. We knew it was coming, of course, but Writer declaring “I don’t want any of your damn money!” and then the cut to the train going by, with the blare of the horn to drown out his scream, isn’t bad.
Yet another thing that makes me think of Coleman Francis is how, despite its bizarre attempts at humour, The Rebel Set as a whole is a No Joy Allowed movie. Nobody gets a happy ending. Tucker dies, but so do Writer and Famous Jr. Johnny survives, just barely, but he’s definitely going to serve time no matter that he confessed and helped catch Tucker – since nobody saw Tucker’s death, for all they know Johnny murdered him, too. Jeannie just wanders off alone in a strange city, having lost everything.
In fact, The Rebel Set is so Colemany-Francisy that I was surprised Johnny survived. I really expected him to be gunned down by the cops in the railway yard, no questions asked. I figured Tucker would get caught and brought to justice, since he was obviously the villain of the movie, but I thought all three of his stooges would be killed first, victims of his hubris or something. Instead, The Rebel Set hammers home how tragic the situation is by having Famous Mom show up at the end to tell reporters she is going home to her son, unaware that he’s in the casket being carried by. This tries so hard to pull on the heartstrings that, like Last Clear Chance, it loops past infinity and earns snickers instead of tears.
Does this movie have a message? I have some trouble with that. There are a couple of ideas that could count as a theme, but none of them work, and they certainly don’t unify the film. The most obvious is crime doesn’t pay, which is another thing that makes this feel like a Coleman Francis film. Both Red Zone Cuba and The Skydivers had criminals being punished for their deeds, along with everybody else around them. The only thing missing from The Rebel Set is the airplane.
The ending, with Famous Mom’s sudden appearance, suggests that there’s a side of Appreciate What You Have: Famous Mom didn’t take time to be a mother to her son when he needed her, and now that she’s decided it’s time, it’s actually too late. This could apply to Johnny, too, since it could be argued that he didn’t appreciate Jeannie and how hard she worked to support him. He lies about what he’s doing, both to protect her and so that she won’t try to talk him out of it – but he would have been protecting her far better if he’d just refused to get involved. At the end, he’s ruined her life as well as his own.
How does this apply to the others, though? I guess you could say that Famous Jr. didn’t appreciate that his mother loved him, but the point was that she was never around. Writer certainly isn’t presented as a guy with anything to appreciate, since the only thing we find out about him was that he spent years writing the Great American Novel only to be told it was unpublishable. I think we’re supposed to see these guys as men who lose everything, but they don’t seem like they had much worth losing.
The third possible theme is don’t get distracted from chasing your dream. All three of the guys Tucker hires have some kind of goal going on that they might have realized if they hadn’t ended up dead or prison. Famous Jr. wanted his mother to love him – and it is revealed at the end that if he’d stayed home, he would have gotten his wish. Perhaps this is meant to imply that Johnny could have made it on Broadway, and Writer could have been a New York Times best-seller, if they’d only kept trying. Rather than work for fame and fortune, they got distracted by an apparent shortcut, and it destroyed them.
Besides the ending, there are a couple of places where The Rebel Set is slightly less dreary than the Coleman Francis Trilogy of Tedium. We mostly know what’s going on, at least, and it tries to be funny even if it doesn’t succeed. Johnny and Jeannie are allowed to actually love and support one another, whereas onscreen couples in Coleman Francis films are usually bitter and distant. There are actual location shoots that aren’t in a desert somewhere and occasionally there’s music. Even when it’s not being as nihilistic as Francis, it’s still pretty bleak and dull, and I get the idea it was also made by somebody who thought tragedy was automatically art just because it’s tragic. It sucks, and I have no interest in watching it again without Joel, Crow, and Tom to lighten things up.

A huge number of people have evacuated and it's both s and not s. Lots people that fit to serve, lotsobject. And left it leave. It's a huge number but it's nowhere near as big as the number that signed on not my friends is a gigantic number get tired of this Tommy f guy.
It's probably a third or better of the population of each area a third total of the population of rebels and people other than Tommy f that's a giant army it's 10 times the size of Tommy f but they need it and there's a whole support network for them all the people say it when we support you I support them too and their action and there's a lot of people joined up the police and they're going after the clones. It is a huge Force in the city of cops seeking these clones and it looks like the warlocks is some kind of recreation in New York City this is ships leave at this time but they're going up to find the empire so could be the clones are sending the message we seem to think so and cat woman picked up on it. She said this on his film I can't seem to see why this is happening again and drove off
Tons of people picked up on it now a lot of people understand. Thier sending a message. It's the clone Army the proposes us ing our video and movie Batman The dark Knight and they say it and they get mad. Now ours is seeking ships they have to others are too. This is a huge day timing is getting trying to mkourson too tired. Failed.
The morlock the max foreigners are attacking the clones and they're attacking a lot they're going to add it with them they're using tons of stuff this guy is thick with things you can't see the sky is so much stuff and that was the idea yes they come in low, I had to detect this is a whole gallon of stuff out there behind it I don't see it until it's too late a lot of ways like that cloaked stuff goes in the first and it's hitting. And there's a way of stuff that's not cliaked and both and a mix has very difficult to see the air is full of these machines tons and tons and tons of them it's a massive sight to see it's beautiful actually and trying it's working it's sore over huge items sitting on the ground over and over all day long then someone suggested they do high altitude it was called skydiving low altitude so flying in and these guys jump out and sore down and then land and they're steelingJets. Huge numbers of them are up massive numbers and they fly away they're going to their base and or designated area it's a giant operation almost half of the Jets that are out and up in the air and most of those flew off somewhere and we don't think it's clones. . That's a lot okay I looked at bases and a lot of those planes are there. It's a giant number of space planes out but the one's missing and probably only a third of the total as him pulled them all out yet, they keep coming out though. The next batch is flying out. Attempted to go to space and getting knocked out of the sky. It's a massive battle now there it tanks that there Manning firing heavy. And the rebels said a very large losses I'm moving in and they try and grab a whole bunch of tanks I get some and some fired on and the returning fire both sides get hit and already yeah looking for more tanks
And this process is repeating most of the tanks don't get far cuz one side of the other hasn't won there's a huge bunch of them they're disabled even a huge one still go far and the Jets are fighting on base. The flow world War I just passed the hardware out will be expended in an hour and the forces will be still fighting but they're pulling up stuff so you think well into tonight. It will all be out in 2 hours regardless it's getting forced out

Where to Find All 16 ‘The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition’ Candidates on Instagram Before the Drama Starts
Upcoming reality television series “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” premieres in Asia this week, beginning 18 March on AXN, the show’s official Asian broadcast partner.
The anticipation has hit an all-time high, as ONE Championship fans eagerly await all the dramatic boardroom scenes and intense physical challenges. Once the initial buzz has simmered down, however, the focus will naturally shift to the show’s 16 candidates.
Here’s a quick look at their Instagram accounts to see what they are up to ahead of the series premiere.
Alvin Ang (Singapore)
https://www.instagram.com/alvinang125/
Singaporean candidate Alvin is not only a martial artist at heart, but was once also a monk in Thailand! The young entrepreneur founded the Singapore BJJ Open, a top-tier competition for all grappling lovers. His Instagram account is private, so only his family and inner circle can see what he’s up to.
Clinton Tudor (New Zealand)
https://www.instagram.com/clintontudor/
Clinton experienced a life-threatening BMX accident that left doctors doubting whether he would be able to walk again, so his story is already incredibly inspiring even before it hits the screens. After his accident, he discovered Muay Thai. Clinton posts a lot of Muay Thai and fitness content, so go check out his Instagram if you’re into that.
Eugene Chung (United States)
https://www.instagram.com/kimchi.papi/
Originally from the state of Hawai’i, Eugene moved to New York looking to make it big in “The Big Apple.” He’s the youngest candidate on “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” and also trains in martial arts. Check out his adventures on Instagram, from Honolulu to New York.
Irina Chadsey (Russia)
https://www.instagram.com/itsirinachadsey/
Growing up in a low-income household in Russia wasn’t easy, but Irina powered through every adversity to achieve her goals. Now she’s a Senior Associate at real estate giant, Jones Lang LaSalle. She also loves to see the world, and her Instagram feed is full of beautiful memories she captured throughout her travels.
Jessica Ramella (Venezuela)
https://www.instagram.com/iamjessicaramella/
Jessica has come a long way, from back home in Venezuela, to the urban jungle of Singapore. She’s bounced around from country to country in between like a true globetrotter. A grownup version of Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven, from Stranger Things), Jessica loves bright colors, rays of sunshine, and showing followers where she’s traveled through the years.
Joy Koh (Singapore)
https://www.instagram.com/gymwithjoy/
The other Singaporean candidate, Joy is a gymnastics coach who has her own gym. She has even judged competitions at the World Championships level. Check out her passion for gymnastics, random photos of her life, and her close friendship with fellow Apprentice candidate, Nazee.
Kexin Ye (Germany)
https://www.instagram.com/kexincherie/
One of the more active Instagrammers on the cast, Kexin’s feed is all about picturesque landscapes and bustling cities. The Berlin-based entrepreneur has over 10,000 followers as of this writing, and she provides fans a healthy stream of content on a near-daily basis.
Lara Pearl Alvarez (Philippines)
https://www.instagram.com/larapearl_alvarez/
Single mother Lara has an inspiring story to tell, but you’ll have to wait until “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” airs to find out. Check out her life in the beautiful mountainside of Baguio City, Philippines, where she occasionally trains alongside the famed Team Lakay.
Louie Sangalang (Philippines)
https://www.instagram.com/louie.sangalang/
Former Filipino mixed martial arts champion Louie will show the world just how intense he is when it comes to business. But before you witness his brilliance in the boardroom, follow along Louie’s life on Instagram. He’s fairly new to the platform. His first post came just last December, right after filming of the show.
Monica Millington (United States)
https://www.instagram.com/monicamillington/
The 30-year-old American comes from a family of successful real estate professionals, but Monica is intent on charting her own path. The owner of Tropick, a men’s active leisure wear company, Monica’s Instagram feed features a beautiful mix of colors that come together to depict her experiences traveling in Singapore and the world.
Nazee Sajedi (United States)
https://www.instagram.com/therealnazee/
A true jetsetter, Nazee has experienced tremendous success in the male-dominated aviation industry, having sold private jets, developed an on-demand helicopter booking platform, and most recently worked as the Head of Operations for a company in the air taxi industry. Like Louie, though, she’s relatively new to Instagram, having just started with her first post last December.
Niraj Puran Rao (India)
https://www.instagram.com/nirajpuranrao/
Niraj wants to leave a legacy wherever he goes, and that includes Instagram where he has over 13,000 followers. Niraj’s feed is an eclectic mix of beautifully stylized photos and words of inspiration. Fun fact: In 2017, he won India’s “Asli Champion,” a reality TV competition for the physically and mentally fittest men and women in India.
Paulina Purnomowati (Indonesia)
https://www.instagram.com/paulinapungky/
Paulina quit a high profile job in Indonesia to join “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition,” and she has no regrets. From climbing the Himalayas in Nepal, to her love for martial arts and dance, Paulina has an amazing Instagram feed with a steady stream of content on the daily for old and new fans alike.
Roman Wilson (United States)
https://www.instagram.com/theromanwilson/
Roman comes from a family of athletes. He was a record-setting collegiate football player at Princeton University and later played at the professional level in the Japanese X-League. His Instagram account is relatively new, however, so it will be interesting to see what kind of content Roman posts, especially during his time on the show.
Sho Takei (Japan)
https://www.instagram.com/stakei_0608/
Known as “The Last Samurai” by his friends, Sho exemplifies many of the bushido principles of honor, courage, and loyalty. He’s got an incredible warrior spirit that he puts forward in the show. Sho has just under a thousand followers, so his Instagram account is quite personal. But with over 300 posts, it means he’s serious. Currently, however, his Instagram account is not viewable.
Teirra Kamolvattanavith (Thailand)
https://www.instagram.com/teirrabyte/
Last but not least is Thai journalist Teirra Kamolvattanavith, who was born and raised in Bangkok but moved to the United States to pursue her studies. From skydiving to exploring ancient Mayan ruins, Teirra lives life to the fullest, and it definitely shows on her Instagram feed.

Jazz Is… #9: Keith Jarrett
Yes. Keith Jarrett was that cool. (He still is, fwiw.) The hair, the stache, the shades, the suede, the denim, and the je ne sais quoi. It looks like he was walking along a cold beach and struck a casual pose, which ended up as a behind the scenes promo pic from a lost Scorsese premake of Louis Malle’s Atlantic City, for someone who saw him a few weeks before at Köln.
Köln. Sigh. Jarrett’s The Köln Concert was a soundtrack (there were many, ohai every Pavement album) of my 20s. I didn’t finish law school until I was 25, but the whole weird deal was just a more challenging – academically, sure, but also socially, whoa – version of college. So when I was done with being student, I was still a punk-ass kid. (And a licensed attorney. Snap!) Those three years, I’m convinced, paused/stunted my mental age. I still feel a very spry 26 – or a not so much 49. It varies.
After three years and a bar exam, some people do crazy shit, like skydive. Or travel the world. Or join a firm. I wasn’t ready for that prime time. I wasn’t ready for much because I wasn’t good at much, except studying and learning. So I reupped for another year in the shit. (Fun fact: There’s such a thing as graduate law school.) I figured that academia is insular, thinking is cool, and matriculating again is a solid fake for ambition. Tbh, I just hoped that eventually I’d have enough frequent blue-booker miles that they’d just let me stick around and teach something harmless like Civil Procedure. They didn’t. Those jobs go to Ph.D.’s, and I had other letters.
A year with the best view in the best place, and my landing point was my parents’ basement. I played too much Tetris, sent cover letters and resumés for positions that I didn’t want, and swept floors at a print shop. That was a great job, thanks to a family friend. I could make my car payment (GEO Tracker, r.i.p.), but not my student loan payments. So it was dodge near-constant lender phone calls, defer defer defer, and apply apply apply. Finally, I got a hit. Trial court law clerk. Let’s go.
I moved to Chicago in August 1996. Freedom from my folk’s often fraught, but ultimately supportive, house. Curiosity in a metropolis. Anxiety about work. Riding the el downtown every day, and experiencing, for the first time, the often messy and always improvisational possibilities of grown-up life. LIFE. You know?
Keith Jarrett knew, seemed like, in my Walkman headphones. He was humming along to his own melodies. Just make it up, man. Be confident in your own abilities, and express yourself. If nobody pays attention, they’re square. And it doesn’t matter, anyway, because this is your trip. The Köln Concert is nostalgic for me because I first heard it back then. It’s also sad for me because the guy who told me to listen to it isn’t here.
MRH was my best friend. We talked almost every day, before and after we both jumped into the city. Tied up in revisiting this record is some grief and, even more than that, a nauseating sense of wasted potential. His, and mine. The world was big to us – globally and locally. A multi-continental place of art and music, and ideas. He never got to explore it, as much as he probably wanted, and I never tried.
I thought that I was experiencing stuff? Mostly, I sat on a futon couch in a third floor apartment on Chicago’s northwest side (Lincoln Square/Ravenswood – my stop/street was Rockwell), petted my then-gf’s eternally cool lap cat (Winchester), read difficult modern (Faulkner, Joyce) and postmodern (Pynchon, Barth) fiction, and pretended to be a serious large-format photographer. Basically, I kept doing what I knew how to do – I fed my brain. Then I got on the train the next day. And over and over and over.
It was all a cool coast, until I had a cancer scare, got married, moved to the ‘burbs, had kids, and got divorced. (Talk about the often messy and always improvisational possibilities of grown-up life.) At that point, I truly learned to riff. Hence, in a way, LN. And then Matt died.
I digress. Just context. This is about Keith Jarrett, not Matt or me.
Keith Jarrett was something of a wünderkind (three umlauts in this post already, yo). He was born on May 8, 1945 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Apparently, he displayed perfect pitch, which Wiki defines as “a rare auditory phenomenon characterized by the ability of a person to identify or re-create a given musical note without the benefit of a reference tone,” as a youngster. He started piano lessons at age three, and at age five appeared on a local tv talent show. At age seven, his first recital included works by Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. He attended public high school and then the Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a year, he moved to New York City and began gigging.
His first big job was with Art Blakey, and his first recording was the Jazz Messengers’ 1966 live album Buttercorn Lady. At a show, he met drummer Jack DeJohnette (more on him later), who played in Charles Lloyd’s Quartet. DeJohnette recommended Jarrett to Lloyd, and Jarrett joined the band. He appeared on Lloyd’s well-regarded 1966 live album Forest Flower (from the Monterrey Jazz Festival), as well as several subsequent albums. By 1967, he had recorded his debut as a leader – Life Between the Exit Signs.
Lloyd’s group dissolved in 1968, and Jarrett was invited to join the Miles Davis group. There are disputing accounts of when/how they met. Miles was beginning his fusion phase, and Jarrett switched from acoustic to electric – specifically, the Fender Contempo electric organ and the Fender Rhodes electric piano. With Davis, he shared keyboard duties with Chick Corea, and they played side-by-side on the 1970 classic At Fillmore and both the studio and live parts of that year’s Teo Macero-produced pastiche Live-Evil, which also featured LN fave Herbie Hancock. The live parts of that album were recorded in D.C. on December 16-19, 1970 with just Jarrett on keys. (Eventually, all four nights became The Cellar Door Sessions box set – highly recommended.)
Jarrett left Davis’ group around that time. For much of the ’70s, he helmed two parallel ensembles, the so-called American Quartet with saxophonist Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian, and the European Quartet with saxophonist Jan Garbarek, bassist Palle Danielsson, and drummer Jon Christensen. Both played a distinct blend of post-bop and free jazz, and released several albums. (I’m not super familiar with that body of work, but I sampled some of it on Spotify – it’s good.) Jarrett’s legacy endures, however, because of other recordings from that era, in which he took a turn from loud to quiet.
The Jarrett wiki, a primary source here, explains that he became strongly opposed to electronic music and instruments, waging what he called “an anti-electric music crusade” because “[e]lectricity goes through all of us and is not to relegated to wires.” The initial salvo in that crusade came in 1973 with the release of the triple album (whut), Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne, Time magazine’s “Jazz Album of the Year.”
A guy named Mikal Gilmore in his book Night Beat said, “with Bremen-Lausanne and the subsequent Köln Concert, Jarrett found his niche, freely mixing gospel, impressionist, and atonal flights into a consonant whole.” Guys, this is solo piano like you’ve never heard. It’s not Bill Evans by himself playing chestnuts, and maybe a medley of a few that lasts ten minutes. It’s Keith Jarrett by himself playing whatever comes into his head for a serious while. Bremen is two tracks – they clock at 18:03 and 45:09. Lausanne is a single track – 64:54. Quick math: The latter is more than an hour of straight-up improv.
Then, two years later, there was The Köln Concert, reportedly the best-selling solo piano album ever. (Weird fact, and I saw it alot while researching this post. I’m guessing it’s more like best-selling solo jazz piano album ever, but I can’t be bothered to confirm that.)
In 1971, Jarrett and DeJohnette released a duo record called Ruta and Daitya on ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music), a label founded by a German guy named Manfred Eicher in 1969. In ’75, Eicher convinced Jarrett to do a “driving tour” of solo concerts across Europe. A seventeen year-old named Vera Brandes organized a concert in Köln, or Cologne, as we say. Here’s Brandes in a contemporary pic – I couldn’t find anything from back then. She looks cool and determined. She obviously was back then.
Jarrett requested, and Brandes promised, a Bösendorfer 290 Imperial grand piano. The Cologne Opera House backstage staff found another Bösendorfer, a baby grand, and put it onstage. The baby was out of tune, and worse, according to Wiki, “tinny and thin in the upper registers and weak in the bass register.” And the pedals didn’t work. Nobody was the wiser, until Jarrett showed up late after a five-hour, 350-mile drive in a Renault 5 from Zurich, where he had played a few nights earlier.
Jarrett was hungry and suffering from back pain, which required a brace. According to his account of the evening, which is part of the Grammy Hall of Fame’s site about the album, some of the tour was scheduled to be recorded, and some was not. Here’s Jarrett himself:
“[T]he Cologne concert was one that was definitely scheduled to be recorded. However, for a 24-hour period before we got to Cologne, we had not slept at all. When we arrived at the hotel, I tried to take a nap. But it was impossible to do so.
The producer of the concert came to take us to the venue in his Rolls-Royce, a car that was so over the top that we could have eaten dinner in it, on the perfectly made wood panels. But we didn’t really learn the problems we were facing, until we arrived at the hall. I went onstage and realized, ‘Hey, I have a Bösendorfer, here and it’s not the right size and it sounds like a modified electric harpsichord.’ And then we found out that they couldn’t get the right piano, even though it existed, because their rental truck was gone.
At that point, we probably said all kinds of curse words. And we started to tell the engineers, ‘Maybe you can just pack up.’ But then Manfred and I both sort of thought that was crazy. The recording equipment was already set up. So we decided to just make a tape of the performance, even it if was just for ourselves. So we went to dinner. It was already late, I was due to go onstage soon, we’d had so many hassles, and the piano was such a terrible instrument. And I hadn’t slept anyway. So I was in almost hell. Then we went to this Italian restaurant where, for some perfectly symmetrical reason, we were served way last. Everyone else was eating, I was the one who was going to play in an hour, and I still didn’t have any food. And then when they finally brought the food, I was still hungry, because I wasn’t happy with the food they served.
All I remember after the restaurant fiasco is taking a peek at the engineers sitting, waiting with their equipment. They had everything ready. And I started thinking, ‘I’m going to do this.’ I remember putting my fist up in the air on the way out from backstage. I just looked at Manfred and said, ‘Power!’ or something.”
After several hours of tuning and adjustment, the piano was some semblance of playable. Jarrett took the stage at 11:30 p.m., following an opera performance – the only time slot that a teenage booker could arrange, apparently. Still, the show was sold out – 1,400 people at $1.72 per. Jarrett made do with his instrument, concentrating his notes in the middle of the keyboard. Again, per his account to the Grammys:
“It just seemed like everybody in the audience was there for a tremendous experience, and that made my job easy. What happened with this piano was that I was forced to play in what was — at the time — a new way. Somehow I felt I had to bring out whatever qualities this instrument had.
And that was it. My sense was, ‘I have to do this. I’m doing it. I don’t care what the fuck the piano sounds like. I’m doing it.’ And I did.”
The entire record is about an hour long, but the performance was three pieces – 26: 02, 33:13 (broken into two parts, even on the digital version), and a 6:57 “encore.” Hear it yourself.
In 1990, for the first time, Jarrett agreed to publish an authorized transcription of his performance. (That’s for the music geeks, who might happen across this blogpost. The Wiki of the album talks about vamping, chords, and a rubato feel. I don’t understand, but whatever.)
In 1977, Jarrett, DeJohnette, and bassist Gary Peacock recorded together on the latter’s record Tales of Another. In 1983, Eicher proposed that the three of them perform together for an album on ECM. Jarrett suggested that they do standards, and the “Standards Trio” was born. The initial sessions are now a box set, titled Setting Standards.
Everything by that group is great, and there’s alot, including another acclaimed box set that documents three nights at NYC’s Blue Note in 1994. They released an album last year.
Jarrett continues to perform solo piano concerts, too. I’ve listened to alot of them. And they’re all special.
Köln will always be special-er. The encore that night was not wholly improvised, but based on a “Real Book” compilation tune known as “Memories of Tomorrow.” Prescient, I guess. In 1975, Jarrett was playing a song that forty-some years later would spark my memories of yesterday. Miss you, dude.
More soon.

Pisa, Italy is known the world over mainly for one famous tourist sight,
but this city that sits on the banks of the Arno River in the central part of the country offers much more. From museums to natural wonders, Pisa offers a lot to those looking for a more pointed and pleasant look at Italian culture through a Tuscan lens.
1. Leaning Tower of Pisa
Pisa’s most popular attraction is the Leaning Tower. But what most don’t realize is that it is actually one of four structures that make up the Campa dei Miracoli or Field of Miracles. The tower is the campanile or the bell tower. The tower was first erected in August 1173, with construction continuing throughout the next two centuries amidst conflicts in the areas. Various architects have attempted to correct the lean of the 17-story white marble tower over the years to no avail. The lean is actually due to the tower being built on an unstable bed of sand. Those who venture to climb the 294 steps will be treated to one of the best panoramic sights to be found in the world.
2. San Miniato
Forty minutes west of Pisa takes you to the medieval town of San Miniato, a historic area that conveys the full richness of Tuscany and its culture. San Miniato sits atop three small hills in the lower Arno valley and was established primarily for this geographical position, keeping much of the same infrastructure since the Lombards first settled there in the 700s. The town has a plethora of historical sights to visit such as the Palazzo Communale built in the 14th century, which still serves as the town hall and the Convent of San Francesco, reputed to have been founded by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1211. San Miniato is also home to a particular gourmet delicacy — white truffles. Prized for their taste, the town holds an annual event attended by aficionados, chefs, and other curious parties. Art buffs will also take pleasure in visiting the Diocese Museum of Sacred Art, which houses many traditional works by artists like Fra Bartolomeo.
3. Piazza dei Miracoli
Formally referred to as Piazza del Duomo, this entire complex is home to the aforementioned Leaning Tower of Pisa. It’s been dubbed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1987 and received its name thanks to renowned Italian poet Gabriele D’Anunzio. Located in the northwestern part of Pisa, the Piazza dei Miracoli was first constructed in 1064 beginning with the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta. Wide plazas allow many visitors to move around and marvel at the intricate designs, which in some cases even include Arabic influences on the loggias.
4. Banks of the Arno
The Arno riverbanks are a key point of reference for those visiting Pisa and for locals. The banks of the Arno are easily reachable by certain streets and can be reached from certain popular sites around the city. There are one or two scenic spots, the most notable being the Santa Maria della Spina on the Arno Gambacorti. This church, built in 1333, gained notoriety due to having once been the home of the cherished artifact of one of the spurs from the crown of Jesus Christ. One special event takes place on June 16th, which is known as the Illustration of San Ranieri where a number of candles are lit to better enhance the buildings along the water
5. Keith Haring Mural - Tuttomondo
Keith Haring, one of modern art’s greatest muralists, left his indelible mark on Pisa. In 1989, he was commissioned by the city to create a signature mural after a chance encounter with a student from Pisa while in New York City. The mural is on the south wall of the Church of St. Anthony taking up 180 square meters (1,937.5 sq ft) and contains 30 figures in much less vivid colors than Haring normally employed in his work. The piece overall is meant to promote greater peace within humanity. Haring managed to complete it before his untimely passing the following year.
6. Battistero
The Pisa Baptistry of St. John, known as the Battistero, was first erected in 1152 as a replacement and is the second building to make up the Piazza dei Miracoli. It’s the largest such edifice of its kind in all of Italy, standing at 54.86 meters (180 ft) in height. One curious fact about the Battistero is that it also was built on the same bed of unstable sand as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which gives it a very faint lean as well. The Baptistery is also an early example of the combination of Gothic and Romanesque architecture that was seen in the country during that era.
7. Piazza dei Cavalieri
The Knights Square is the second most popular square to encounter in Pisa. It takes its name from the fact that it was the home of the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen beginning in the 1500s and was the main hub of political activity in the city. A few of the buildings were designed by Giorgio Vasari, the chief engineer of the Grand Duke Medici of Florence. Nowadays, the University of Pisa has a special educational facility there and there is also an ambulance service stationed there as well
8. Camposanto
Located in the Piazza dei Miracoli at the northwestern part of the complex is the Camposanto or Camposanto Monumentale. This is the last structure to be built within the Piazza; the Camposanto is the cemetery. Surrounded by an outer wall of 43 blind arches, the cemetery is notable due to the fact that part of the construction involved the usage of soil imported directly from Golgotha. Currently, that older burial ground is underneath what is now standing. Other attractions at the Camposanto involve a series of frescoes that date back to the 1300s that were damaged in World War II and are now being restored along with a large amount of Roman-era sarcophagi on the grounds.
9. Torrente Serra canyon of near Florence
Book this activity and enjoy rappelling, plunging into deep pools, and swimming along Torrente Serra Canyon. Slip your way over or under its gigantic boulders. For those of you unfamiliar with canyoning, it is where you follow the river stream in a canyon. Traverse the narrow walls and polished marble edges. Nature-lovers are lured by the canyon’s amazing landscape with its beautiful and large deep waters flown down from Mount Altissimo in the Apuan Alps. Adventure-seekers live the excitement with a series of waterfalls, climbing steps and sliding down the toboggan. The activity starts with an in-depth safety briefing before putting on your wetsuit, helmet and safety descender and longes. Then, walk through the riverbed of the stream before descending the beautiful canyon for roughly two hours. You must be able to swim as there may be mandatory jumps along the path. The waterfall can be up to 12 metres (39 feet) deep
10. Tandem skydive at 4000m (13123 ft.) over Florence, Italy
Enjoy superb views of Florence and the Chianti countryside as you conquer your fear of heights! Embark in this adventure-pumping skydiving feat. Jump off the plane, spread your wings and fly with your 45-second free fall, manoeuvre the canopy and prepare for descent. You will be harnessed to a tandem master all throughout the activity. All that is left is for you enjoy the breath-taking scenery. The activity includes a brief safety and instruction orientation, and the services of certified tandem masters. You can also choose between hand camera-captured photos and videos as perfect souvenir for this experience!

Moving to St. George Utah
Making a move to a new city can be very anxiety ridden and complicated. There are so many unknowns when it comes to long-term moves. How can you be sure that your new home will be affordable, safe, and fun enough for you to uproot yourself and a family to settle down there?
One way to find out is to visit the city itself for an extended period, which few people have the time in their schedule to do properly. When this is the case, the next best step to take is to do some heavy researching.
If you’re considering moving to St. George, you may be happy to know that it is a city that probably does not get as much shine as it truly deserves. There are many neighborhoods to choose from, and almost endless activities to participate in in the surrounding area. So, if you’re short on funds to go tour the city for a few days, here is a guide to help you determine if St. George is right for you.
Neighborhoods
The neighborhood you choose to move into can make or break the way a new city feels for yourself and your family. Depending on your budget, you may find yourself at any corner of the St. George surrounding area, as there many safe and lively towns to choose from, dotted all over.
For a larger budget, Stonecliffe and Entrada boast spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, while including high priced amenities such as gated communities and upscale community centers. Both the towns have very high-quality school that boost the market value of your new property if you happen to need or want to sell your home in the future.
For a more mid-level budget, Tonaquint Terrace and Snow Canyon are full of recently developed properties and upscale landscapes. Both of these show promise in their schooling systems as well, and it seems have been on an uptick in full sale of homes in the area. Regardless of where you end up, you’re sure to see the gorgeous sunny skies and picturesque mountains near town.
Culture
Because it is indeed a canyon town, St. George is a destination for anyone looking to have an active and incredibly fun thing to do seemingly every day, in every season. Thrill seekers and avid outdoorsy types have made sure to establish their business dreams firmly years before you’ll arrive! Everything from climbing, canoeing, hiking, zip-lining, and skydiving are at your disposal.
Hiking is always a favorite option for locals since it is relatively cheap compared to other activities. There are plenty of scenic and challenging trails to discover for all experience levels. Hike the Emerald Pools trail to find yourself atop a gorgeous waterfall view in Zion National Park. Taylor Creek trail will take you along the foothills of the canyons and pop you in a beautiful valley.
St. George is an extremely active town. However, those who are the most active during the day can often be the best relaxers when the day finally winds down. After all, you cannot be up and at ‘em every single hour of every day! The town is well known for its destination spas, particularly at the Red Mountain Resort and Amira Resort & Spa. Check in for a day of total rejuvenation after a long day of putting your body to the test!
The historic downtown district also provides the perfect setting for you to shop the day or night away. Shops line the streets downtown, and you can relax while you stroll through the city and window shop, or peruse through the stores at a slower pace. No matter what you’re looking for, the downtown district can satisfy you needs for jewelry, clothes, athletic gear and more!
Transportation
Let’s face it, there are not very many cities in the United States, outside of the big one like New York City and Los Angeles, that offer quality and affordable public transportation for its citizens to enjoy. Luckily, St. George offers two different options to zip around the area without owning or renting a car: a shuttle and bus transit system.
The shuttle is actually very convenient for when you fly into Las Vegas to make your trip over to St. George. For about twenty-five dollars you can travel from the airport, straight to the city. There are also other shuttle services, such as St. George Express, that can arrange to take you even further to Zion National park.
The bus transit system is the best option to travel around the city itself once you arrive there. Called Suntran, the buses run three scheduled routes, and have buses that cover the entire area. Not only is it a great way to get around, it’s a fantastic way to meet some of the locals whom you will soon call you neighbors. For schedule and route information, you can call Suntran directly, or just stop into the St. George Chamber of Commerce when you arrive.
Of course, there’s no better way to set around town than within the comfort of your own car. The average commute time in in St. George is 15 minutes, and most household have 1 to 2 cars. And Interstate 15 runs straight through town, acting as a major business road and an excellent path to get where you’re going.
Landmarks
A guide to St. George cannot be written without acknowledging the Zion National Park and Snow Canyon State Park. These are indeed the reason St. George boasts some of the most gorgeous residential views in the country. each park is roughly forty-five minutes from Zion, making a day in the wild a perfect way to spend the weekend.
If you do pop into St. George to scope out the town, do not forget to spend some time with the family driving up to one of these parks. Gazing upon its truly stunning natural beauty can convince anyone to set up home near the mountains. And Snow Canyon adds to the fun with easy trails for children and adults, as well as an expanse of large sand dunes for everyone to play on.
Moving anywhere can be tough. But it seems that St. George makes the transition simple and easy just by being a well-groomed and well-mannered city with an endless array of entertainment and activities for you to enjoy. It surely helps one’s confidence to know that they are moving to, essentially, a resort town nestled deep in the canyons of Utah.
St George is truly a hidden gem. Its lack of popularity makes it the perfect place to get away from the big city and find your center in a smaller town. You can become a special part of the community and begin a journey that most will not ever get experience. The city is perfect for any style of living, familial, single, or temporary, and offers upscale neighborhoods and high-end apartments. When you’re ready to make a change for the better, be sure to pack your adventure, and be sure that you arrive with the same attitude and spirit that will great you when you do.
