i'm actually gonna go on record as a historian and say, on the subject of "why is every man i know always thinking about the roman empire", that means that every man you know has a dangerously bad relationship to imperialism

#roman empire #ancient rome #roman history #history #ancient history #not that history or specific fields of history are necessarily bad things to study #it's important that people study different eras of history and different groups of people to get a more accurate picture of the world #but the type of person who gets really into the roman empire #is just a repackaged version of the guy who's really into ww2 #they romanticize a westernized version of the ancient world particularly highlighting periods and civilizations plagued by wars of conquest #history is about the people that were killed by howitzers and trebuchets #before it is about the machines of war themselves
