Of course the outsides of a standard ice cream sandwich are a kind of cookie, but I've never seen them independent of the ice cream. I'm thinking that the controversial one should probably be called a chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich, for clarity (and because it's also studded with chocolate chips on the sides of the puck of ice cream).
So.
Chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich. It's a mouthful, but that seems appropriate.
#nomenclature#taxonomy#is it because Oreo is a trademark of Nabisco that cookies and cream ice cream isn't just called Oreo ice cream?#because it's sure as hell not any other kind of cookie#Oreos are such a strange phenomenon to me#for how much Americans go on about them I was expecting them to be far nicer#your chocolate chip cookies? splendid! top-notch!#you have many other fine cookie varieties such as the snickerdoodle#brownies? exist in the overlap between cake and cookies in the most beguiling manner#but then there's Oreos and they're just... blah#you guys normally have better taste in sweet baking that's all#would not walk out of my way for an Oreo#it's not even just that they're a mass-produced sandwich cookie with a cream filling#our mass-produced sandwich cookies/biscuits with cream filling absolutely kick an Oreo's ass#from simple classics like the Griffin's Cameo Crème to indulgent delights like the Arnott's Kingston or Monte Carlo#(not related to your actual sandwich called a Monte Carlo)#and then there are the offbeat outliers like the Griffin's Lemon Treat#which is a lemony cream filling between two buttery *lightly salted* crackers#similar in texture and flavour to a Ritz cracker#they're wonderful#I just went to the Arnott's website to check I had the name of the Monte Carlo right#and it was like 'Arnott's utilises cookies' and I was like 'I hope so!'#haha I like to have fun
