Time to include a follower into the WORLD OF LIGHT EVENT

After a few hours from GALEEM’s attack DEXTER went into hiding until he felt it was safe. Then after a few days he decided to look for survivors in hope that he’s not alone. While searching he encountered a few TAKEN inklings and octolings passing by and managed to not get spotted and not only that but he also learned they DON’T enter the building in sight. Woodbury Common: Bargain Hunting in the Fashion Afterlife

They come by car and park in color-coded garages set along the perimeter of a cluster-model mall — stores arranged in Stepford neighborhood groupings: Niagara, Hudson Valley, Saratoga. The shops face inward around a series of walkways leading to open-air commons, framed by the pastoral backdrop of low wooded hills.

They come by the millions, from most continents and dozens of countries and on daily buses from Canada or from Port Authority in Manhattan. That is where I set out on the ShortLine, boarding behind a clutch of millennial shoppers whose excitement about the trip ahead was unconstrained.

“We’re going to Woodbury Common!” one announced in a hyperventilated tone you may associate with an 8-year-old headed for Disney World. Settling into seats near the rear of the bus, the small group excitedly shared their retail dreams.

“Can I tell you what I’m looking for in case any of you see it on your travels?” one woman asked. “I’m looking for pearl statement earrings. I need a suede jacket with a fringe, either brown or black. I want a bathing suit slash cover-up for a bachelorette weekend, a tweed jacket I can wear with jeans and a bra.”

How I managed to miss this place, which has been around for nearly 35 years, is anyone’s guess. Let me revise that. I had ardently avoided Woodbury Common because the oxymoron of bargain goods made for premium outlets made me queasy. I was not eager to suck hours out of my life just to browse through fashion missteps, clothes of uncommercial proportions or the mustard yellow sweaters that are a universal emblem of designer fail.

That was then. Now I know better. I know, for instance, that clothes do not go to Woodbury Common to die — not really. Rather, after a period of warehouse retirement, they come here to be gently reborn at one of 250 stores spread across a 912,000-square-foot complex of peak-roofed buildings in a style of architecture somewhere between a Friendly’s and a Sunglass Hut.

It was early on a warm Saturday morning when my bus pulled up to the mall, and the place seemed unsettlingly calm. That would all change by noon, when the lots filled up and the hordes descended, lines forming behind stanchions at Prada and Gucci, and posses of shoppers wheeled around enormous empty suitcases (available at mall kiosks).

Perhaps because there were as many different languages heard on the streets of Woodbury Common that day as at a United Nations conclave, I became preoccupied with the absurdity of squandering a precious day of Big Apple tourism on the hunt for a North Face T-shirt at 50 percent off. Then I fell into the flow.

Because of course I did. Shopping as a form of entertainment is the next frontier. How else can one account for plans announced this spring by the Simon Company Group in Indianapolis, the largest shopping mall owner in the United States, to expand Woodbury Common to the size of a mini-city, adding another 165,000 square feet of retail space, 2,140 parking spaces, two 120-room hotels, a spa, 37,000 feet of restaurant space and a helipad? (At $2,350 for a helicopter ride, you might as well stick to Bergdorf.)

MY FIRST STOP OF THE DAY was at Valentino, where the men’s wear stock seemed scant and I was put off by an encounter with a camo sweater that, although reduced from $1,695 to $699, had a slackened neck and the sad aura of shopworn goods.

I did take note of a fantastically pretty pink wool coat covered all over in appliqué roses. Originally priced at $14,500, it had been reduced to $5,250 and was subject, a salesclerk told me, to a flash sale reduction of 75 percent. Though at $1,576, the coat was a steal, I had to remind myself that I am neither a woman nor a petite.

High-tailing it out of there, I headed for Dior’s brand-new men’s store, as glossy on its opening day as a Madison Avenue boutique. The goods looked duly crisp and fresh, and plenty of black suits with slick details and patent leather shoes with insect embellishments presented themselves.

The designs all bore the distinct imprint of Kris Van Assche, who, as any fashion archaeologist could tell you, exited the label last year to assume the creative helm at Berluti. He was replaced by Kim Jones, who immediately revamped the Dior silhouette. Unless you have a stake in looking ironically dated, it helps to keep up with this level of trivia.

At the Givenchy shop, for instance, the standing racks near the front were hung with an array of oversize shirts and tailored pieces from Clare Waight Keller’s debut men’s wear collection (“Perverse posh” was the phrase she coined for the look), while farther back were the forlorn leftovers from the tenure of her predecessor, Riccardo Tisci (now at Burberry).

Sometimes vintage goods may be exactly what you’re after. I say this because at Saint Laurent, among the ratted-up hoodies suspended from ceiling-mounted chrome racks, I stumbled upon a wear-once black velvet varsity jacket embroidered with beaded butterflies (a hard pass at $6,799, down from $17,000) and a snap-button plaid flannel Western shirt that were clearly designed by Hedi Slimane.

Mr. Slimane has not been at Saint Laurent since 2016, and so much the better by this consumer’s lights because, even on the rare occasion when I buy a designer garment in season, I rest it a while in my closet until the novelty wears off.

The shirt was a find, and also a steal at $169 — especially when, as I did, you rationalize your decision by compulsively checking the comparable ones on Grailed.

AMPED BY THE PURCHASE, I darted into Dolce & Gabbana, and was all but bodily ejected by a force field of vulgarity. I skipped the humongous Nike and Tommy Hilfiger stores that are the real reason many shoppers come here and dipped into Fendi. There I happened upon an overscale checkered woolen trench ($1,999, reduced from $4,000), rendered shiny with waterproof urethane resin. It was a handsome thing though too pervy to consider seriously.

At Gucci I joined a growing mob of shoppers pawing through dense florals and fur-lined Crocs and strenuously distressed jeans with snarling cats embroidered on the backside, and was bemused by the delirious excess of it all.

A spell of mental instability overtook me when I spotted a pair of summer shorts in a riotous Garden of Eden pattern. I got as far as the dressing room before recognizing that well-known pitfall of bargain shopping, deluding yourself into thinking you are somebody else.

I quickly took refuge in Prada, and it was there that I came upon the find of the day. Whatever the gimmickry of any given season, Prada can be relied on for certain constants: stores painted a very Milanese shade of pistachio green, a sales staff crisply uniformed in black and white, and solidly reliable accessories.

And yet it can happen that even small alterations in certain classics spoil them for finicky consumers. Such was the case with a perfect textured leather billfold I bought at Prada a decade ago and, naturally, lost.

In all the years since then, I’ve scoured Prada stores in various cities attempting to find its replacement. And, while there were similar ones, the shape had invariably been modified, the logo added in raised metallic letters. By Goldilocks millimeters, they were too slim or too fat.

How the precise match to my wallet found its way to Central Valley, N.Y., like a lost pooch that fetches up in a distant state, I will likely never know. Yet there on a display shelf was the model I’d been seeking.

Actually, there were three, each priced at $125. Reader, I bought them all.

Creality makes a pretty good unit in the Ender 3 and Ender 3 Pro.  However, every now and again they seem to cut some pretty serious corners.  Their XT60 Connectors, commonly used in RC Cars to connect the battery, are poor quality and in many cases they failed to solder the connections and just crimped them.

XT60 connectors are designed to support 60 Amps of continous throughput.  The knockoffs provided by Creality’s supplier fall far short of that before failing.

This walk-through will show you how to replace your XT60 connectors if you have not done so already.  Many sites and videos show the WHY.. I show the HOW.

Difficulty: Moderate (Easy if you have Soldered before)

Time Required: 10-15 minutes but if you are drinking plan for 30.

Cost: $8.00 (for a 10 pack of XT60 Connectors)

Soldering Iron or Station to Solder with!

Kester 186 Flux to clean your connections and help the Solder process

60/40 Resin Core Solder – it’s the Solder.

Let’s get to it!

I have 8 Ender 3’s.  7 Standard and 1 Pro (I do like the Pro the best).   This is a great entry to mid-level 3D Printer and I have been working them hard for months.

I PRINT A LOT.. ALL THE TIME.

But I did notice the connectors start to brown and in some cases melt.  I usually heat the bed to 60-65C, I would worry about printing ABS on these machines without some work.

The top one is melted together.. I could have had some real trouble there.  Four more to go.

This is your target.. its behind the hot bed.  This connector connects the power supply to the control box.

MAKERSTEVE TIP#1:  Remove the build surface, if it is removable.  You may be able to apply this fix without having to relevel/tram.

Disconnect it!

Just look at that.

Grab on pair of XT60 Connectors and pull out the Heat Shrink

NOTE The MALE and FEMALE Connectors… you can swap them if you like or didn’t pay attention.

MAKERSTEVE TIP #3: The flat edge is Positive (RED) and the rounded edge is Negative (BLACK)

Snip the exiting Connector off where you see the joint.

Snip off a half inch of heat shrink, red and black.

Remove the existing heat shrink and strip the wire back about a quarter inch.  Longer is not better.

MAKERSTEVE Tip #2: Put the Heat Shrink on now.

Preheat your Soldering Iron or Station to 285C.

I started with the Positive Cable.  Use the 3rd Hand to hold the wire and the connector and align them as shown below.

Apply a few drops of Flux onto the connection to be Soldered.

Peel off about 4 inches of Solder

Here’s where you have to use your imagination… I didn’t have a fourth hand.

Preheat the underside of the connector with the Soldering Iron.  You will see the Flux Bubble and Smoke.  After 10 or so seconds move the Soldering Tip to the top and run the solder into the wire and the connector.  It should fill the inside of the connector and surround the wire making a sealed, strong connection.  Ensure you cook off as much flux as possible.  When you are done it should look like the Soldier Joint below.

If you have a bubble of Solder or it fills the circle around the connector used canned air or the Solder Sucker to clean it up a bit.  Don’t worry, if you make a mistake you bought 10 pairs connectors.

Flip your connection and line the Black wires up with the negative terminal as shown below.

Flux

Solder, heating the bottom of the connector first.. 3-4 inches of Solder and some patience.

Slide the heat shrink up, if the connection is still hot it will shrink a little and go in the rings around the terminals.  If not, use the soldering iron to tighten up the heat shrink just a touch.

Slide it inside.

Hit it with the Rework Blower or a heat gun

Looks good!

Yup.

Do the other side the same way and you are back in action.

BJM Solids Handling Pump Improves Metal Manufacturing Facility

The Companies

The manufacturing environment can be hard on equipment, and pumps are no exception. This was the scenario at a custom metal manufacturing facility in the Northeast where the pumps were repeatedly failing. After numerous work stoppages and costly replacement expenditures, the manufacturer finally turned to Midway Industrial Supply for help finding a solids handling pump solution to the ongoing problem.

Midway Senior Account Manager Lenny Klein was tasked with finding a solution. Klein took it upon himself to gain a full overview of the problem — how many gallons per minute were moving through the nearly continuously running pumps, how many feet of head needed to be pumped, and the piping configuration, before recommending a BJM SK Series Submersible Shredder Pump.

  The Challenge

The manufacturing process in this facility primarily involves metal tooling and grinding, which in turn result in a lot of metal shavings. The process also uses machine coolant to lubricate and cool the tooling and metal during the manufacturing process. The coolant, metal shavings, and inevitable trash and other debris eventually find their way into the sump where the pumps had been failing.

The Solution

In this particular application not only do the pumps need to be able to handle the metal and other debris, but they have to be powerful enough to pump the coolant through the paper filter media back to a tank for reuse. The previous pumps had not been able to handle the suction and discharge required without getting fouled.

Klein consulted with BJM Regional Manager Steve Mosley, and they recommended a BJM SK Series submersible shredder pump

  Product Advantages

The SK Series is a line of electric submersible pumps with shredder action impellers designed for use in municipal, industrial, and agricultural waste water installations. Model SK37C was recommended for this particular installation and can handle up to 1.6-in. solids at 360 gal per minute and a maximum of 62 ft of head.

BJM’s shredder pumps leave solids slightly larger than if passed through a grinder pump. The shredding action is caused by using a cutting impeller with a Tungsten carbide tip, against a “spiral” shaped diffuser plate.

Klein also recommended a seal minder kit for the client to place in the control panel. The seal minders send a signal from the pump to the control panel in the event there’s a breach in the double-mechanical seal allowing water to enter the seal chamber.

Other quality features built into the SK Series pumps that supported their recommendation for the installation include the following:

The 304 stainless steel motor housing helps protect the pumps from abrasion and premature wear caused by harsh environments.

The motor is protected by double mechanical seals. The lower seal is made of silicon carbide/silicon carbide, and the upper seal is made of carbon/ceramic. In addition, a lip seal has been installed above the impeller that helps prevent abrasives, such as sand, from entering the seal chamber.

Winding protection and NEMA Class F motor insulation allow the motor temperature to rise to 230°F. An automatic switch turns the pump motor off if the temperature and/or amp draw gets too high. When the motor cools the switch will automatically reset and the pump will restart.

A hardened cast iron stands up to rough handling and pumping of water containing abrasives unlike pumps with soft resin impellers or plastic exterior components.

Specifications are dependent on the model and may change without notice. The pumps are also available in 316 cast stainless steel, and an explosion proof shredder pump is also available.

The Result

The SK Series Shredder Pumps have virtually eliminated the previous fouling problems, saving the manufacturer significant time and money. It isn’t difficult to see how failed equipment can quickly have a negative impact on a company’s bottom line.

Klein said the end user was so pleased it purchased several additional BJM pumps to have on stand-by in the event anything goes wrong with another pump.

Klein said he would recommend the BJM submersible shredder pump for any process in which debris falls into and must be pumped out of a sump.

“I have a huge amount of confidence in these pumps. They do what they’re supposed to do,” he said.
