Mike Hesson talks about why RCB selected Faf at the mega auction:
One of the biggest decisions of your tenure was identifying a replacement for Virat Kohli, when he stepped down as captain after the 2021 season. How did you settle on Faf du Plessis?
Virat's a very hard man to replace - and to be captain when your ex-captain is still there is incredibly difficult. You've got to be quite a strong character and really have the changing room [on your side]. You can't be a developing captain. We thought we had to have an established captain with a lot of those core experiences.
We'd spent a lot of time looking at all the gaps that we had in our squad. We looked at Indian players as well, and we went pretty hard for one or two. We settled relatively late on Faf, but we thought he ticked a lot of our boxes: he was highly experienced and still a high-quality player. We never knew at that time whether we'd be able to get a full three-year cycle out of somebody at that age [37, at the time of the mega auction], but the fact that he's incredibly fit gave us a lot more confidence.
He was almost a "plug and play". He knew Virat and [Glenn] Maxwell very well; they had a great relationship. He had a reputation for working equally well with overseas and domestic players, which is critical - to have an overseas player that comes in [as captain] and doesn't have that empathy towards how a team works could have been a disaster. The more we talked to people about Faf, the more he was our target.

[ad_1] Scene from IPL Mini Auction 2024 (Image: iplt20.com) / Lionel Messi with the PSG jersey (Image: PSG) The IPL 2025 Mega Auction is around the corner, and the Indian media fraternity and fans are going bonkers about it. Alongside the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the buzz regarding the auction is palpable. Millions will be spent in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25, and lives will be transformed. Top cricketers, Indians and overseas, uncapped and capped – all will go under the hammer and the franchise owners will empty their purses trying to pick the players of their choice. A certain uncapped player might fetch a huge sum while some sure bets might fetch less. The auction dynamics are hard to predict. However, there is an adverse side to this billion-dollar gala. This article strictly tries to critically analyse two types of player dealings – the IPL mega auctions and the football transfer window. When players play for a franchise or club, they build a relationship with all the team stakeholders. Venkatesh Iyer, in his interview with RevSportz, spoke of how attached to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise he was, and how he would love to be back with the team even though they didn’t retain him. Venky Mysore, the KKR CEO, also reflected on the same issue, that such mega auctions hamper fan loyalty. A certain player who has served a franchise is now uncertain whether he’ll be a part of that side for the upcoming season. For instance, Rishabh Pant is one player for whom franchises are expected to break the bank in the upcoming auction. Punjab Kings, with the maximum purse, will have the financial edge over others. They might go all guns blazing to rope in the wicketkeeper-batter and might succeed. This is not to predict or analyse their auction strategy, but to point out that the players don’t get to choose their clubs. This is not the case when it comes to football transfers. Players’ name tags going under the hammer in the IPL Mini Auctions 2024 (Image: iplt20.com) Take a scenario where a player is unhappy with the current team. The player can request for a loan or a transfer. In the new transfer window, the player might be sold or loaned out with mutual agreements involving all parties. The IPL mega auction is a spectacle but the system raises questions about player satisfaction and fan loyalty, as players have little control over their destinations and longstanding relationships with franchises often end abruptly. Contrasting this, football’s transfer system allows for mutual agreements between players, clubs, and agents, providing greater flexibility and honouring individual preferences. For instance, Lionel Messi’s move to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in 2021 was facilitated by mutual understanding given the club’s financial constraints, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s 100 million transfer to Juventus in 2018 respected his desire for a new challenge. Similarly, Philippe Coutinho’s loan move to Bayern Munich from Barcelona in 2019 allowed all parties to benefit, while giving the player a chance to revive his career. Neymar’s world-record €222 million transfer to PSG in 2017 reflected his ambition to step out of Messi’s shadow, while Oscar’s €60 million move from Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG highlighted how financial incentives drive decisions in emerging markets. Brazil’s Oscar after his move to Shanghai Port (Image: AFC) Such flexibility ensures that players’ ambitions align with the financial and strategic goals of clubs, creating narratives that resonate with fans. In contrast, the IPL’s auction dynamics disrupt player-fan connections. For a player to have a healthy connection with a franchise takes a lot of toil – it’s a long journey. Now, going by the current auction scenarios, franchises have to make a priority list of retentions and leave out certain players, who they may not be able to buy back at the auction. The player who wants to stay with his current side wouldn’t have a chance to negotiate terms. Even if the player’s plans don’t align with the team’s, there’s nothing much he can do.
While the IPL auction is integral to maintaining competitive balance, adopting elements of the football transfer system could address some shortcomings. Allowing players more agency or introducing trade windows could help franchises retain iconic players while ensuring competitive fairness. The reality though is that the IPL auction was never modelled on football transfers. Lalit Modi, the league’s creator, wanted to recreate the glitz and glamour of draft day in US sport. But there, only newbies, fresh out of college or even high school, are part of the draft. The other players already in the system are traded based on their wishes, or they sign with a new franchise once they’re free agents. More from this author, click HERE In that sense, the IPL auction is neither here nor there. It’s not only for new players, and it’s hard to escape the notion that the priority is to create a TV spectacle every two or three years. Ultimately, both systems have merits and challenges. But football’s emphasis on mutual agreements provides a compelling model for fostering loyalty, enhancing player satisfaction, and maintaining fan engagement—something the IPL could consider as it evolves. Top franchises likely to bid big for Rishabh Pant in IPL auction
Tumblr media
The exit of Rishabh Pant from Delhi Capitals ahead of 2025 IPL auction
Rishabh Pant’s journey with Delhi Capitals saw a significant turning point in 2021 when he assumed the captaincy in Shreyas Iyer’s absence. DC retained Pant as captain during the IPL 2022 mega auction, releasing Iyer, who subsequently joined KKR and led them the following year. Pant captained Delhi in IPL 2022 but missed the 2023 season as he recovered from several injuries that he sustained during an unfortunate car accident. After his recovery, Pant returned to lead the team in IPL 2024.
However, after IPL 2024, Delhi Capitals experienced major internal changes. Ricky Ponting, the head coach, moved to Punjab Kings, while Sourav Ganguly took a sabbatical following the GMR group’s takeover of team operations from JSW for the next two years. Speculation about Pant’s release began circulating after Ponting’s exit. Reports soon surfaced that while DC was willing to retain Rishabh Pant as a player, they wanted a new captain. Pant, however, was firm on retaining his leadership role. This misalignment led to his release, making him one of the hottest picks for the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Franchises likely to bid for Rishabh Pant in IPL auction
Punjab Kings
With the largest auction budget of Rs 110.5 crore, Punjab Kings have released their entire squad, barring uncapped players Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh. The team is keen on rebuilding from scratch and is likely to make a strong bid for Pant in the IPL auction. Moreover, PBKS is in need of a captaincy pick following the retirement of Shikhar Dhawan. Punjab’s new head coach, Ricky Ponting, who shares a successful history with Pant from their Delhi Capitals days, is expected to champion the effort to bring him into the fold.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore, armed with Rs 83 crore, has the second-highest budget for the IPL auction. With Dinesh Karthik no longer in their squad, they are in need of a wicketkeeper-batter, and Pant fits the bill perfectly. While RCB hasn’t retained Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli has expressed interest in reclaiming the captaincy, which could work as a middle ground for Pant. Even if not given the leadership, Pant may relish the chance to play under Kohli’s guidance.
Chennai Super Kings
Although Chennai Super Kings have a smaller auction purse of Rs 55 crore, they are rumoured to be considering Pant. Speculation arose after former CSK player Suresh Raina hinted at a possible connection between Pant and MS Dhoni. However, given Pant’s likely price tag of Rs 18–20 crore, CSK might find it challenging to compete financially in the IPL auction. Moreover, with Ruturaj Gaikwad only recently stepping into the captaincy role, CSK is unlikely to offer Pant the leadership position, leaving questions about whether they would prioritize signing him.

The Most Wickets In IPL History
The 18th edition of India's largest cricketing event, the Indian Premier League (IPL), is scheduled to take place in 2025. Particularly in the bowling section, the rivalry has reached new heights as ten teams aim to win the coveted crown. Even though hitters frequently take center stage, bowlers in the game's shortest format still treasure the Purple Cap, which is given to the player who takes the most wickets in the tournament. Due to the IPL 2025 mega auction, the franchisees will be under more pressure for the next season. All eleven teams will try to restructure their rosters by adding new players and keeping some of their old players. One lingering uncertainty is the Impact Player rule, which caused debate in past seasons. Given how it can impact bowling plans, a number of teams and players have expressed worries about its possible continuation.
The Sought-After Purple Caps and Its Seekers
Even though there were a lot of runs made throughout the 2024 season and new batting records were established every other day, teams know that bowlers are frequently the ones who assist them in winning games. Despite carrying a hefty price tag, pacers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, who were the most expensive players in the last auction, generously returned the favor to their respective franchises. Promising bowlers like Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, and Vaibhav Arora rose to the top of the IPL 2024 rankings and might be serious candidates for the Purple Cap in the IPL 2025 schedule. They will, however, have fierce opposition from well-known players, such as Harshal Patel, the Purple Cap winner from the previous season, who took an outstanding 24 wickets. Besides, there will be more elite players competing in the Purple Cap race in 2025, making it more competitive.
Bowlers - A Necessary Asset For IPL Teams
The importance of bowlers in the IPL cannot be understated. Although each side has a strong batting order, the bowlers frequently tip the scales. Some teams in the IPL have struggled in the league due to a lack of bowling skills. However, the league's top teams, like the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Mumbai Indians (MI), have established their dominance thanks to their pool of excellent bowlers. Even the Gujarat Titans (GT), the IPL's 2022 debutants, used their bowling arsenal to win a significant number of games. This suggests that in order for teams to succeed in the lucrative competition, bowlers are essential.
Tumblr media
Yuzvendra Chahal - The Best of The Best
While we are on the subject of successful bowlers in IPL, how can we forget about the phenomenal Yuzvendra Chahal who is currently the highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL. With 205 wickets in 160 games, Yuzvendra Chahal holds the record for most wickets in IPL ever. He achieved this position after dismissing Nitish Rana, the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, in the 56th match of IPL 2023 between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and KKR. The leg-spinner, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2014 to 2021, took 139 wickets at an economy rate of 7.58 in 113 games. He played for RR in 2022 and took 27 wickets in 17 games, earning him the Purple Cap. When the wrist spinner held onto a return catch from MI's Mohammad Nabi in the 2024 Indian Premier League, he broke the 200-wicket milestone.

India ‘A’ Selection Is Good Opportunity For Upendra Yadav, Kumar Kushagra: Ajay Ratra
Tumblr media
With KS Bharat: With KS Bharat and Dhruv Jurel selected in the Test squad for the first two games against England at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, Kumar Kushagra and Upendra Yadav were recently included in the India ‘A’ team for the second and third four-day games against England Lions in Ahmedabad. While Upendra was a member of India ‘A’ team on their tour of South Africa in 2021, Kushagra has been handed a maiden call-up to the squad. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Ajay Ratra believes the duo are on the radar of the selection committee, resulting in their selection for India ‘A’ team. "India ‘A’ is your second-best Test team and with them being selected for those games, it means that the selectors and team management are keeping an eye on those two, based on their domestic performances for a long time. There’s a lot of cricket happening and it’s great that those two wicketkeepers are getting a chance to play in this format," he said in an exclusive conversation with IANS. With Rishabh Pant still recovering from injuries sustained in a horrific car accident in December 2022, India has fielded three different wicketkeepers in Test cricket since February 2023 – Bharat, Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul. Bharat had been in the ‘A’ team set-up for a long time before graduating to the Test level, while Rahul has been the primary wicketkeeper in ODIs and even donned the gloves for the Test tour of South Africa. Kishan has been on a mental health break from the game since December 2023 while Jurel was given a Test call-up, based on his good showings in domestic cricket and India ‘A’ games. Hence, the call-ups of Kushagra and Upendra to the India ‘A’ team have two aims – of expanding the wicketkeeper pool in senior men’s cricket and give the ‘A’ level exposure to youngsters like Kushagra and Upendra. When Kushagra’s India ‘A’ call-up came, the wicketkeeper-batter converted his overnight score of an unbeaten fifty into a fine 132 for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy match against Services at the Airforce Complex Ground in Palam, New Delhi. Last month, Kushagra had earned an astonishing INR 7.2 crore deal with Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2024 Player Auction in Dubai. Ratra, who played six Tests and 12 ODIs for India, recalled seeing Kushagra as a young keeper a few years ago at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. “I still remember about doing an U16 camp with Kumar Kushagra in Bengaluru. The way he showcased his glovework at the U16 level, it made for a very impressive look.” "The NCA has a lot of camps going on in a year and at that time, he was at the U16 level. Someone like Jayant Yadav was at the NCA for rehab or practice and he needed a wicketkeeper to do his bowling practice. "We then sent Kumar for helping him and even though it was a practice session happening, he was catching balls at ease and gathered the deliveries very well. Seeing that, I got a feeling that he would be a decent keeper and has now done well at the domestic level." On the other hand, Upendra is a big-hitting wicket-keeper who has kept wickets and got big runs for Uttar Pradesh and Railways in first-class cricket. "I haven’t seen much of Upendra, but have heard a lot about him and read about his scores too. So, the India ‘A’ selection is a good opportunity for them and the way Dhruv Jurel entered India ‘A’ setup before getting the Test call-up, they can take inspiration from it." "If an overseas series comes up and whether India would take KL Rahul as a keeper there, there’s some time to it. But India ‘A’ selection is a good opportunity for both Upendra Yadav and Kumar Kushagra," concluded Ratra. Read the full article

[ad_1] The 2024 IPL could be a defining one for defending champion Chennai Super Kings, as it could well be the last season for its talismanic captain, MS Dhoni. Going into the player auction, the five-time champion needed to strengthen only a few areas, and the management can be pleased with how things turned out in Dubai on Tuesday.A key area of focus was to find a replacement for the now-retired Ambati Rayudu, who made impactful performances in the last three title-winning campaigns (2018, 2021 & 2023).ALSO READ | CSK squad IPL 2024: Chennai Super Kings full list of players after auctionOn that front, the Super Kings scored a winner in all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and also snapped up a highly-rated 20-year-old uncapped player, Sameer Rizvi, by going full throttle for both of them. The team made full use of its purse of Rs 31.40 crore to pursue all-rounder Mitchell and get him for Rs. 14 crore. Mitchell had a tremendous World Cup in India and could fill Rayudu’s shoes in the middle-order. Meanwhile, Rizvi (Rs. 8.4 crore) scored 277 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Uttar Pradesh at a strike rate of nearly 140 with 18 sixes. The hard-hitting youngster also had a sensational UP T20 league, and if he can find his feet at the IPL level, the Yellow Brigade might have found a star for the future. These big buys were set up right at the start when the think-tank was able to strike bargain deals in scooping up New Zealand batting sensation Rachin Ravindra and Indian medium-pacer Shardul Thakur, who was with the outfit for four years, between 2018 and 2021. Thakur’s best years in the IPL have been while wearing the yellow jersey as a death-overs specialist and also adds depth to the batting line-up.ALSO READ | CSK Probable Playing XI IPL 2024: Chennai Super Kings squad compositionCoach Stephen Fleming later said Mitchell was one of his side’s key targets. “Daryl is a different type of player, but his performances over the last 18-24 months have warranted this price. He is an unfashionable player and often goes under the radar. With his ability to play spin, he is competitive and a handy bowler,” said Fleming.Another target was an overseas pacer as a cover for Matheesha Pathirana, and the Chennai side managed to get a good option in 28-year-old Bangladeshi left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who comes in with a lot of experience. With a winning core largely intact, CSK has come out of the auction stronger than before for its title defence campaign and probably for Dhoni’s swansong. Tata IPL2023
Tumblr media
The 2023 mega auction of the IPL took place in Bengaluru in December. The most expensive player was Sam Curran, bought by Punjab Kings for ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million), the most-paid player in the history of the league. Ahead of the auction, all the IPL franchises published their list of retained players in November 2022. Some of the big names that were retained in the 2023 edition include MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Sunil Narine, Glenn Maxwell, Andre Russell, and Jasprit Bumrah. Gujarat Titans are the defending champions.
Tata Group retains as the title sponsor of IPL 2023
The IPL Governing Council announced the new IPL season after the IPL 2023 auction was completed. Aside from the promise to be bigger, better, and more enthralling, Tata Group was announced as the new title sponsor for the Indian Premier League. Tata Group replaces Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo as the title sponsor for the IPL 2022 and 2023 editions. In 2018, Vivo came on board as the title sponsor till 2022; however, due to tensions at the border, the contract with Vivo was paused in 2020.
New rules in Tata IPL 2023
The BCCI stated that it "will preserve IPL's position at the forefront of innovative cricket and continue the growth of the T20 format" in a memo announcing the new umpire signal and rules of the Impact Player.
The BCCI has informed franchises that following the toss, as was recently implemented in SA20, captains may select their playing XI. Before the toss, the captains were required to declare the starting Eleven. Expanding the DRS's scope to include wide balls and no balls is another new regulation. The rules of the game specify that "a player may also be permitted to review any decision made by on-field umpires concerning wide or no ball."
The Biggest Change in This IPL is the introduction of Impact Player. This is how the rule will play out. According to the BCCI, “The captain will identify the impact player to the umpire, and the umpire will signal in the manner as depicted in the above image indicating that the Impact player is being introduced. Teams can name four substitutes, or impact players, in their squad for a match in addition to my playing 11. One of these may be used as a substitute during the match.
It adds, "The Impact Player can be introduced (i) before the start of the innings; or (ii) after completion of an over; or (iii) in case of a batter, at the fall of the wicket or the batter retiring at any time during the over (as provided in Clause 1.8 (iv) below). Tata IPL 2023
The bowling team can also get an Impact Player during the fall of the wicket, but that Impact Player will not be permitted to bowl the remaining balls in that over if the wicket has fallen mid-over."
