Nana's House Installation, London College of Fashion - Community Co-Curator
Nana's House is an interactive living room installation, as part of Designed for Life which coincided with the opening of the new campus in Stratford, East London, UK.
The living room reflects and represents a broad heterogeneity of lives and experiences in East London told through a fictional family gathered on a Sunday afternoon at Nana's house, using artefacts and QR-linked soundscapes to represent each family member.
"Nana's one of a kind, and so is her house. It's Sunday afternoon, and her Leytonstone Victorian terrace is at capacity. Mum, dad, uncle and Grandad congregate around the jollof, but I'm more interested in the sweet, spiced tea and homemade samosas that have made a regular appearance here since we took in a lodger - an Indian-Muslim exchange student from Hyderabad.
My grandparents have lived here long before I was born. The walls tell the tale of an exuberant young textile worker arriving in London in 1960, fresh from Ondo State, Nigeria, with an infatuation with the latest in fashion and design. Over the years my mum has tried to add some modern toches; working in finance, she began to share her wealth in the late 80s with a new TV and sofa - much to the apathy of Grandad, who only believes in fixing what is broken.
Grandad was a print worker, a determined trade unionist whose career ended at age 48 with a labour dispute on Wapping High Street in 1987. A "real East Londoner born within earshot of the Bow Bells", he fought the resurgence of fascism around Ridley Road Market with the 62 Group and got bruised, whilst mourning the death of his and nana's first newborn, in battles against Oswold Mosely.
He tells stories of how he fell in love with Nana in 1961 to a soundtrack of Marvin Gaye. They triumphed against melancholy and fell deeper in love. In 1966, they celebrated the World Cup win for England together, of which West Ham players were an integral factor!
Having spent the summer away from my parents, I am inspired by the community and political strength of my grandparents. I collide with my parents' capitalist complicity - working in government and global trade; they mock my uncle who gave himself earnestly and entirely to the rave scene of Lea Valley." Soundbites of the family members: • A phone call to the lodger - shopping in Ilford as a Pakistani woman • Grandson - Teenage Frustrations • Grandad - The History Of An East London Print Worker • Nana - A Nigerian Matriarch • Uncle - Cultural History Of The East London Rave Scene • Mum - Affluence, Influence & Merit • Lodger - Far From Home • Bonus
Nana's House was created by lead curator Dr Leila Nassereldein and co-curated by community members Pallavi Chamarty, Omolara Obanishola, Dave Sohanpal and Anh Tran. Supported by Dr Michael McMillan
Artist's works featured around the living room: • Poppy Frean • Sahira Khan • Mercedes Halliday • Shama Kun • Brahim Bendaoud • Lydia Wood • Asim Khairdean • Toyin Gbomedo • John Curtis Films on the TV: • Looking for You - Anna Nguyen & Kristine Landon Smith • Sonia's Whitechapel - Hend Draz, Maya Leonavicius, Fangjiao Liu, Jake London, Angela Josephine Smith & Claire Wasson with special thanks to Sonia Sylvester • Radical Nostalgias - Mercedes Halliday • To Style a Life for Oneself (trailer) - Omolara Obanishola • Dress For Our Time: In conversation with Helen Storey and Michael Saunby - Helen Storey • Drawing Reality - TIGERs • Tarek’s Story - David Betteridge • Reflections from Za’atar - Helen Storey Special thanks to Sahira, Lord Tusk, Theresa, Tony Sullivan, Lee McKarkiel, Furniture Reuse, The Dovetail, Popup Garden Bookshop and Niquelle LaTouche Oct 2023 - Jan 2024

Mods: The Progressives
Background on the 1960′s fashion world:
When you think of the 1960′s you most likely think of the fashion associated with Mods like shift dresses, mini skirts or go go boots as well as fashion icons like Twiggy, Jane Birkin or Nancy Sinatra. Between the 1950′s and 1960′s there was a transition in fashion as in the 50′s fashion was focused on French designers and was controlled around the wealthy elite. But with the new decade there was the creation of youth fashion where designers focused more on what young people were wearing. The cycle of fashion changed. It went from designers being copied by retailers to sell to consumers but they were taking inspiration from people on the streets and basing their design off of them. We also saw a shift in fashion capitals, London was fashions new muse, in particular Carnaby Street and in the Soho area in general.
Notable designers of the decade would be Mary Quant, Ossie Clark, Paco Rabanne, YSL, Givenchy and Andre Courreges to name just a few. Designers worked with man made materials to create their clothes and experimented with synthetics such as PVC and Polyester. Boutiques were made popular by Mary Quant setting up her first boutique in 1955. This was so that customers could combine items whilst still being accessible in urban environments like London.
Their seems to be a debate on who first created the mini skirt between Mary Quant and Andre Courreges when I was researching but some come to the conclusion that Andre created it whilst Quant popularised it. Breakfast at Tiffany’s was known for the black dress designed by Givenchy and created what we now know as “The Little Black Dress.” Now the most popular 60′s icons would be twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, Jean Shrimpton and Peggy Moffitt. However, people fail to mention Donyale Luna in that list, even though her impact has been important to the culture we know today. She was the first black women to appear on the cover of British Vogue and coined the first black supermodel. She also was reported as Andy Warhol’s and Salvador Dali’s muse. I recommend looking into her story.
Mods in the 1960′s:
Mods derived from the word modernists were teenagers from the baby boomer generation who’s families had benefited from the economic boom after WW2 in Britain. It was also a way to escape from the political issues that were going on at the time as they were seen as “adult problems” as it is reflected in the emphasis on being or dressing childlike as a divergence from adults. There were 3 stages of 60′s fashion. The early 60′s was the introduction of the ‘new look’ showing the new boxy silhouette that contrasts with the hourglass body type of the 50′s. Then there was the mid 60′s when the mini skirt and shift dress is introduced. In the late 60′s garments were more flowy, often associated with the hippies movement. This style was also influenced by south Asian clothing with pieces such as the Afghan coat coming from it as well as many patterns inspired from Indian clothing.
Bands like The Who, The Beatles and The Small Faces were influenced by this style as The Beatles were known for wearing skinny ties which were popular at the time. They were commonly associated with vespas as they were sleek and clean but also fast. A lot of teenagers preferred to go to coffee shops that opened late or jazz clubs. The style had evolved from their ancestors of the Teddy boys and ‘50s Betniks. Men’s style was influenced by suits from the Edwardian era as well as those of the French and Italian kind which were sharp and tailored. They also wore turtle necks and heavy jackets to survive UK winters. The women also wore clean lines and bright colours and controversial above the knee hemlines (Knees! How scandalous, How horrifying!) At the time they were seen as progressive which on reflection can seem quiet shocking for how far we have come today, even though today is far from perfect. The style to some extent was seen as quiet androgynous with women adopting short hair styles and were becoming more independent as the second wave of feminism influenced ideas of women in the 1960′s as women believed that they should build a life outside of the home. This style was quiet popular to say it was a subculture but it did also clash with the equally popular rocker crowd of the time in England.
When writing this I thought back to trends have realised that the 60′s in fashion has forever impacted culture but the mods can still be seen today in terms of trends with bright pastel colours and mini skirts being a forever staple. Although now I believe that there has grown to be subcultures but also an emphasis on personal style. There are so many icons from this decade that I wish I could all mention and explore. Not only in fashion but in music as well.
Hey guys, sorry it’s been a while, been focusing on school. I hope you are all doing well. Thank you for the love on my last post, I really appreciate it!!! Hopefully I will post more soon.
Lots of Love,
~Siren~ <3

Navratri 2023 Colors: A Guide to the Significance of 9 Days of Sharad Navratri Attire
Navratri, the nine-night festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion in India, especially in states like Maharashtra and Gujarat. ugh the european sizes post is SO TRUE. i lived in europe for a couple of years as a size 8 girl with boobs and an ass and lemme tell you, shopping for clothes felt like i was committing a crime by merely existing 😭😭😭 buying cute and well-fitted dresses/tops/skirts was impossible. i also have a friend from India who travels a lot for her job and she saves her entire "western clothes" yearly shopping budget for her US trips bc acc to her as plus size girl she can't get that kind of proper fit, variety in styles and good quality anywhere else, including India! apparently a lot of western clothing brands in India traditionally ape the UK/Europe in terms of size and fit. absolutely insane bc indian body types run to the curvy, even if you're size 4 or less, these european sized clothes might "fit" technically but won't look good bc they'll be too tight here and too loose there. i believe its getting better now but its still US brands supremacy if you're a remotely curvy or fat girl!
BRO I KEEP ON SAYING!
It makes me SO self-conscious trying to shop with European designers like no, I do not have a 25" bust, thanks for playing. The thing is, I'm a small person and at high end American places like Marc Jacobs and more mid-end stores like JCrew, I'm a 4 or MAYBE a 6, even while I also have DDs, and that simply doesn't carry over into Euro sizes because they're apparently convinced that no women exist who are over a size 2 and a B-cup.
Christian Siriano is a designer who really GETS women's bodies like he understands that a woman who's my size will have relatively narrow shoulders even if she has big boobs so he makes his blazers have room in the chest to stretch without making them way wider. I simply can't just buy a size 12 and tailor down because it'll look super boxy and I'm not paying hundreds of dollars to tailor every item of clothing I own.

Seeing how often the things that they "harmlessly mock the British" for are things which are always within the UK shorthand for Gypsies and Travellers and often ESPECIALLY IRISH TRAVELLERS, ie are just plain unambiguous racism and often are closely hewn to British imperialism in Ireland, drives me spare.
Feels like no coincidence that the style of dress that is most-mocked is that of Traveller youth, that the accent is always either the Romany drawl, MUBE/MLE which is strongly associated with working-class British Indian, British Pakistani and Black British kids as well as (possibly even especially as?) Mixed race working class kids, or otherwise accents and dialects associated with extreme poverty and deprivation in parts of Scotland or the North.
Add in that the most often mocked kinds of foods are the food of people of colour who ended up here because of the machinations of the Empire and then managed to carve out success for themselves and change the whole culinary culture of the UK in the process (Even the most conservative of old racists will get a lamb samosa from the paper shop on the way to work, which is the same ones as the British Pakistani kids pick up to eat on their school dinner break) and it gets blatant, fast.
i'd go so far as to say that at least 95% of american's hatred of the british and french (whether ironic or not!!) simply comes from that they want a socially acceptable way to be racist

Tips for Choosing Bridal Jewellery:
Match the jewellery to your dress’s neckline.
Opt for versatile pieces that can be worn after the wedding.
Choose metals and stones that complement your skin tone and gown color.
2. Indian Bridal Jewellery for a Unique Twist
Bridal jewellery Indian is renowned for its opulence and craftsmanship. For UK brides seeking a distinctive look, incorporating Indian elements can be a game-changer.
Popular Indian Bridal Jewellery Pieces:

Design Shawls: A Timeless Accessory for UK Weddings
Shawls are an often-overlooked but incredibly versatile accessory. For brides marrying in the UK, where weather can be unpredictable, a design Shawl is both a practical and stylish addition.
Why Choose a Shawl?
Weather Protection: Keeps you warm during outdoor ceremonies or photo shoots.
Added Elegance: A beautifully designed shawl enhances the overall bridal look.
Versatility: Can be draped in various styles to complement your dress.
Popular Shawl Materials:
Silk: Lightweight and luxurious, perfect for summer weddings.

How to Style a Bridal Shawl:
Wrap it around your arms for a snug, modern style.
Use it as a head covering for a traditional touch during the ceremony.
Combining Tradition with Modernity
One of the best aspects of modern UK weddings is the freedom to mix and match cultural elements. Here’s how brides can achieve this balance:
Blending Indian Jewellery with Western Outfits:
Pair a Kundan necklace with a strapless or sweetheart neckline gown.
Add bangles to a minimalist dress for a pop of color and tradition.
Use a maang tikka with a veil for an ethereal look.
Incorporating Shawls into Different Wedding Themes:
For a rustic theme, choose earthy-toned shawls with subtle embroidery.
For a royal theme, opt for richly embroidered or velvet shawls.
For a modern minimalist theme, select monochrome shawls with clean lines.
Accessory Shopping Tips for UK Brides
Shopping for wedding accessories can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to make the process smoother:
Set a Budget: Allocate a portion of your wedding budget specifically for accessories.
Research: Browse online and visit local boutiques for inspiration.
Try Before You Buy: Ensure accessories match your dress and overall theme.
Consider Customization: Many designers offer bespoke jewellery and shawls for a truly unique touch.
Care and Maintenance of Accessories
To keep your bridal accessories looking their best, follow these care tips:
Jewellery: Store in individual pouches to avoid scratches and tarnishing. Clean with a soft cloth and gentle solutions.
Shawls: Follow fabric-specific cleaning instructions. Store in breathable bags to prevent moisture damage.
Hair Accessories: Keep in a protective case to avoid bending or breaking.
Conclusion
Bridal accessories are the finishing touches that complete your wedding look. Whether you choose classic jewellery, Indian-inspired designs, or elegant shawls, these details allow you to express your personal style. For UK brides, the blend of tradition and modernity opens up endless possibilities to create a look that’s uniquely yours

Navratri 2024 Colors: A Guide to the Significance of 9 Days of Sharad Navratri Attire
Navratri, the nine-night festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion in India, especially in states like Maharashtra and Gujarat. One of the captivating traditions during Navratri is the daily choice of colors to wear, each associated with a different form of the goddess. This practice holds deep significance in Hindu culture, symbolizing purity. Let's take a closer look at the Navratri colors to be followed this year and the gods and goddesses they represent.
Day 1: Pratipada - Shailputri
On the first day of Navratri, Goddess Shailputri is venerated, also known as Parvati, the daughter of the Himalaya mountains. The color for this day is Orange, symbolizing energy and enthusiasm.

Day 4: Chaturthi - Kushmanda
The fourth day celebrates Mata Kushmanda, who is said to have created the cosmic egg with her smile, bringing light to the universe. Royal Blue, representing elegance and royalty, is the color for this day.
