Meet Vasuki indicus, among the longest snakes that ever lived
Scientists estimate length of the reptile from vertebral remains
Paleontologists have unearthed fossil remains of an ancient giant snake species — almost the length of a large tour bus — dating back to 47 million years old1, and comparable to the longest snakes that have ever lived on earth. They found 27 well preserved fossil vertebrae of Vasuki indicus from a lignite mine in India's Gujarat state, and used them to model the estimated actual length of the snake to somewhere between 10.9 to 15.2 metres. The longest known snake at around 13 metres is the extinct Titanoboa that lived 60 million years ago in present day Colombia. Paleontologists Sunil Bajpai and Debajit Datta at the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee say V. Indicus was likely a slow-moving predator that wrapped its body around the prey to squeeze it to death. It evolved in the warm Indian subcontinent and spread to Africa via Europe around 56 to 34 million years ago, they say. V. indicus flourished in forested swamps of the now arid Kutch region...

A new analysis of fossilized vertebrae discovered in western India has revealed the existence of a giant snake species that may have measured some 11 to 15 meters (36.1 to 49.2 feet) in length when fully grown. The researchers behind the work, from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, acknowledge some uncertainty in their estimations, but they suggest the newly identified reptile they've named Vasuki indicus may have equaled the size of the largest snake in history, the Titanoboa, which died out some 58 million years ago. Compared with snake species still slithering around today, V. indicus is way ahead. As far as verified measurements go, the longest living snake right now measures a paltry 7.67 meters.

[ Fossilised caudal vertebrae of Tharosaurus indicus. ]
"A team of researchers from India has discovered fossils of a new dicraeosaurid from the Indian city of Jaisalmer in western India. These fossils, dating back to 167 million years, include bones separated at the joints but associated with specimens of the central body bones spread over an area of 270 square feet ( 25- square meters). The dicraeosaurid, called Tharosaurus Indicus in reference to the Thar desert where the fossils were found, is the first ever discovered in India and the oldest in the world’s fossil record. "The significance of this discovery rests in its antiquity," said Sunil Bajpai, a vertebrate paleontologist at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and an author of the study, in an interview with Economic Times. The team of five began their work in 2018 when they discovered these fossils. The team acknowledged that the material in their possession is fragmentary, and there is a possibility that as more evidence is recovered, there might be a change in their taxonomic attribution; the fact remains that Tharosaurus Indicus currently is the oldest known diplodocoid. “...the discovery of Tharosaurus makes India a major center for not only diplodocoid but neosauropod radiation,” said the authors in the study. The discovery of Tharosaurus suggests that India played a significant role in the emergence and diversification of neosauropods, a group of long-necked vegetarian dinosaurs that thrived as the largest land animals, explained Debajit Datta, co-author of the study, in an interview with The New York Times."
