“Mama? Daddy?” Teunis called softly, tapping at the door. At that hour the domina was at supper with her family, but Teunis' parents had a lamp burning late for the sewing. He had a few hours before Gaius and Ephaedro would be back from the theater, but Teunis felt nervy and on edge waiting at the door.

It opened slowly, as though his parents were uncertain it was him. His father opened the door a bit, the lining of a coat still held in one hand. Teunis pressed forward, pushing the door open, and his his face against his father's chest in a hug.

“Teunis? Teunis, what–” his mother said. He could hear her put down her own sewing, muffled by his father's arms around him as she came to wrap them both up. “Baby, you can't–you can't be here, you have to go back–”

“I asked permission,” Teunis lied. He wiped his face with the cuffs of his sleeves, ashamed to cry like a child. He hadn't been forbidden from leaving the house, but he knew Gaius would be angry if he knew.

His parents bundled him into the little room they all shared, which seemed tiny and foreign now after only a few weeks away. His mother had been rocking little Bauke, feverish again, and Okke, Trijn, Lieke, Cees, and Linus were crowded into their beds at that hour; Okke and Trijn in the high lofted bed and Lieke moved down into what had been Teunis’ place with Cees and Linus. His father sat Teunis nearest the fireplace, the warmest spot in the room, and fretted over serving him a bowl of bread and porridge. “They gave you such nice clothes,” Teunis’ mother said, rocking Bauke in her lap as she searched Teunis' face anxiously. “They're taking good care of you?”

Teunis swallowed around the sharp knot in his throat and nodded, unable to look up from the warm bowl of porridge in his lap even as desperate as he'd been to see them again. “Domina is very important,” Teunis said to his soup. “There's another boy, Ephaedro, he's very kind.” He couldn't make himself lie about Gaius, the ink of the tattoo on his chest still tender and painful.

“I knew you'd be safe, you're such a good boy,” Teunis' father said, sitting beside him to pat his cheek. Teunis felt stupid and ungrateful eating their porridge when he'd had a full dinner already and he knew how little domina gave them, but he missed the way his father cooked. “You’re listening and doing as you're told?”

“Yes, daddy,” Teunis said to his porridge. If he let himself think about it too much he'd start crying again. He listened to everything Ephaedro said and did everything Gaius and Livonia told him and Gaius still hated him, but if he lingered too long safe at home lying to his parents he'd bring so much trouble down on them and himself.

They peppered him with questions; it was easier to talk about what Ephaedro liked and Livonia’s important painting work, as though either had anything to do with him, easier than trying to lie to them about being happy.

He didn't mean to cry when it was time for him to leave, but after he kissed all the sleeping little ones goodbye and left the candies Ephaedro had bought at the market, Teunis couldn't make himself go out the door again. He dawdled at the door as his mother kissed him goodbye, like a child avoiding a scolding by domina. Even if he knew he'd have worse than a scolding if he wasn't back when Gaius arrived home from the theater.

“I'll walk you back,” Teunis' father said, putting an arm around his shoulders. Teunis didn't like the realization that they were almost the same height, but he let his father guide him back out into the unforgiving night anyway.

They walked in silence for a few blocks, Teunis leading the way. It made him feel better, a little, that his parents would know where he was now. That he might not be able to go back to them but he could hold on to the childish fantasy that they would come for him if he really needed them.

“I was so frightened when domina first bought me,” Teunis' father said as Teunis' steps slowed, dragging his feet in the alley as they approached the back gate. “I was frightened of your mother for the longest time, but it turned out for the best. You're a good boy, you'll be alright if you're obedient and work hard.”

Teunis turned his face away in the dark, ashamed of himself. His parents didn't speak much of their marriage; Teunis had known that domina had bought his father as a husband for his mother and that neither of them had any say in it, Teunis himself born in that first year when they barely knew each other, but they rarely spoke of it. “I want to come home,” Teunis said, petulant as a child demanding more supper who knew the pot was empty.

“I know,” his father said, and wiped an eye. “But they'll take care of you if you work hard. Be good so they let you keep coming to see us.”

“I will,” Teunis promised, and his father waited as he let himself in the gate and closed it between them. Teunis let himself imagine that he could see his father lingering in the dark alley when he made his way upstairs and peered out the window of Gaius' bedroom, perched where he could wait for Ephaedro and Gaius to come back.

She woke to the light coming through the window. She had assumed Enki was already up and gone. She was surprised to hear him only just getting ready. She panics and practically jumps out of bed, running out into the living room to catch up to Enki. He looks up at her in confusion, her hair a mess while he's pristine in comparison. She puts her messy hair up and then in a frayed state of mind she starts handing Enki's things to him so he can get out the door faster. As Enki gets his last things from Livonia and heads out the door, he notices her getting herself around, not paying it much mind.

“I'll be going now, enjoy your day off” Enki tips his hat as he walks out the door.

“...I will, Enki, have a nice day.” but he was already gone as she spoke.

She promptly heads to where he kept his files which happened to be in the dining room and pulls out the files labeled ‘Filth’ to look through them; Going through the files she looks for anything substantial and sets it aside. When she's done, she puts all the files back other than the ones she set on the table. She carries them with her, holding them close to her chest, heading to her room. She walks up to her bed and moves the mattress a bit, grabbing a small file that says, “files for coworkers;” Putting the files inside of it and putting the mattress back in its spot for safekeeping.

After putting her bedding back, she heads outside and scans the ground for any remaining cigarette butts. She should have taken care of them last night, relieved that Enki hadn't seen them when he came home. Afterward, she grabs the hose to water the grass because the ground is dry. She puts the hose away by tossing it near the edge of the house. She looks around looking for something else to do as she notices the window to her bedroom having a noticeable smudge on it. She gets a cloth and a bucket with water to clean the windows, ensuring the smudge is gone. She puts her hand on her hip and nods at her skills. Reaching for the bucket, she takes it in confident strides back inside. Just before entering, she pours the water onto a flower garden beside the door. It hasn't been maintained as well as it should be, but it still has an air of beauty to it; the flowers and the weeds fighting for the water Livonia has given them, a silent dance of death.

Finally getting inside, she sits on the couch taking a break from all the cleaning she just did. She sat there wondering what to do next. Maybe she could do some reading, she did collect the newspaper earlier when going outside, there might be something interesting. As she picks up the newspaper, the first thing she sees is a story about the killer ‘Filth.’ It was no surprise. She skipped it and saw a smaller story; it was about a mysterious person who seemingly flew from building to building. Nobody could get a good glimpse of him, the only noticeable features being a sword and a mask. People have named him “the harpy.” Upon reading this, she immediately suspects Enki; after some thought, she decides that she is going to stay up again to ask Enki if this is him and if that's the reason that he has been out so late so often. She waits around for him for a couple of hours, eventually getting bored of waiting for him to get home. So, she decides to go to the office to confront him about this directly, taking the paper with her.

She heads out to make her way to the office. Normally she wouldn't ride in a carriage, but this was a special occasion. When she gets to the building, she goes to Enki's office. As she enters and startles him from his brooding. He sighs, shuffling his papers together and making them neat as he sets them to the side.

“What is it?” he says dryly “I don't have all day”

She shoves the newspaper in his face pointing to the story of the harpy, “Is this who I think it is?” She asks, smiling.

Enki leans his elbow on the desk, putting his face in his hand. “You really think that?” He pulls his hand away. “No,” he says with conviction in his voice.

“Oh, cut it out” She loses her friendly demeanor and her voice becomes sharper, “It's already obvious, nobody else but you carries old swords around like they're trophies”

Enki hesitates before standing up, his small size paling in comparison. “Livonia, I had my reasons”

“I wouldn't have told on you, what am I? You?” she gestures to him.

He looked offended. “I was doing my job!”

“What job makes you a nighttime vigilante?” she crossed her arms, “not this one… listen, Enki—” Her now softer tone was drowned out by his.

“No, don't start that!” he shut her down, “This is my company. I can do whatever it takes to have it succeed”

As the situation escalated further, Livonia got an idea. She grabs a picture frame from the wall, holding it up. “Can't do that if you're in jail for sneaking around” She holds the frame higher.

Enki's eyes flash with fear and his voice becomes urgent “What are you doing? Put that down!” he reaches out his hand to her.

She pulls back, keeping it from him. “All you've done is lie to me… can't you just give me a straight answer for once?”

His eyes flick between her face and the picture as he hesitates. “...fine, just give that back”

“Only if you tell me" She demanded.

“Why do you have to be so-” he bites his tongue and takes a deep breath, “Yes, it was me. I do it to get more files… the more information I have, the better, happy?”

She wished that he'd give her more, but she relents, handing back the frame. “...happy”

Looking at the picture, Enki dismisses her, “Leave. Now”

She turns without a word, leaving Enki to continue to brood.

Teunis sat with his chin resting on his knees to watch the crowd, cheek still stinging because the dealer had slapped him and told him buyers wanted to see his pretty face, not the top of his head. He didn't want to be bought, he wanted to go home to his parents, but his father had told him to be good.

Teunis pushed the thought of his parents away, to keep himself from crying again.

“Well aren't you pretty,” a woman said, and tipped Teunis’ chin up with her walking stick. He looked up at the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen, her dark hair piled on top of her head and spilling around her face and dark eyes. “Stand up, pretty, let me take a look at you.”

The dealer came to hover as Teunis picked himself up; behind the lady buyer were another woman and two men looking bored, and a helot who looked exactly like Teunis watching eagerly over their shoulders. “Livonia, we'll be late,” one of the men complained.

“I'll just be a minute, don't fuss at me,” Livonia said. “Has he got all his teeth?” she asked the dealer.

“Of course, madame,” the dealer said. Livonia grabbed Teunis’ jaw and had him open his mouth, peering in at his teeth. She smelled like jasmine.

“Take off your tunic, sweetheart,” Livonia said when she was done.

Teunis blushed to the roots of his hair. He knew why he was there–had seen plenty of other helots stripped and inspected at the market while he'd been waiting to be sold, but no one had done it to him yet.

“Ah, and you're even prettier when you blush,” Livonia said, in a warm, pleased voice even as the dealer frowned. Teunis kept his eyes down and took off his tunic, conscious of the other helot’s eyes on him over her shoulder. “Has he got any training?” Livonia asked the dealer. “Music, embroidery, reading?”

“He's a virgin,” the dealer said as Teunis stood there naked, tunic at his feet. He wanted to say that he could sew, that his mother was a tailor's assistant and Teunis could sew as well as his father, to make this beautiful rich lady want to buy him, but he knew the dealer would slap him again if he opened his mouth.
