Troll Lol Lol

An immense amount of good has come from social media, however, social media has provided a new platform for lousy people to do lousy things. Why do people have to ruin everything?! Trolls or Trolling is what I'm talking about. You may be asking, ‘isn’t a troll a mythical creature that only appears in Harry Potter?’ well yes, but that's a different kind of troll.

Trolling: The act of leaving an insulting message on the internet in order to annoy someone. Whilst there are numerous definitions of trolling, essentially they all mean the same thing. Sometimes I like to scroll through comments on Facebook, usually a post by ABC News, SBS or The Age, where I know that there will be lots of Trolls lurkin. This sounds horrible but it makes me laugh and (now with the ‘laugh’ react on facebook) lots of other people laugh. Now, to me at least, it is so blatantly obvious when a person on Facebook is trolling that I can’t not laugh. And it seems that as more and more social media users are starting to become internet and social media ‘savvy’, -  for the most part - people are faster to pick up who is and who isn’t being a troll. Civil humans happily going about their day on social media: 1 Trolls: 0.

It’s clear that Trolls are just looking to get a response, they try to provoke users and some are very good at it. Especially in today's political climate where it seems that everyone who has an opinion likes to share it online, essentially making for the perfect environment for a troll.

After the animal rights protest in Melbourne CBD, veganism was brought back into the spotlight and not in a positive way. Many people were angry at the disruption the protesters caused (and so were many vegans), thus resulting in people who were commenting/tagging their friends on ‘pro’ vegan posts, for example, something as simple as a vegan recipe video on Facebook, would then receive nasty messages from trolls. One woman posted in the closed Facebook group ‘Vegan Girls Melbourne’ the message she received from one troll and boy was it lovely:

“F**** you, you dumb f****ing vegan terrorist” (Troll 2019)

However, not all trolling is considered to be nasty, sometimes it is humorous and more like a meme. Take “Rickrolling” (Dubs 2015) for example (which was discussed in week 7 lecture). It is described as “a bait-and-switch practice that involves a web link supposedly relevant to the topic at hand, but redirects the viewer to Rick Astley's 1987 hit song ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’”(Dubs 2015). It’s generally to be considered an ‘internet meme’, something that you would send to your friends as a prank and not make them upset. I must admit, the song is pretty catchy so I’m sure they wouldn’t mind. Even Astley thought it was “Hilarious” (Sarno 2008), with his only concern being that his daughter wouldn’t be embarrassed by it.

Essentially what I’m saying is, don’t be a troll. If you absolutely have to, then be more of a meme ‘artist’ that does things like Rickrolling, than one that creates an anonymous Facebook profile and uses it to abuse people who are simply contributing to an online discussion. Is that too much to ask?
