I rewatched Amends for Christmas, as you do, and in doing so this year, I feel like I can really see how they were originally planning to have Buffy be the character to put Angel on the right path again in "You're Welcome."
I mean, it would have tied into how she was the one to set him on his path to begin with, so of course he'd need her to steer him right when he was veering off of it.
And I think the "Strong is fighting. It's hard and it's painful and it's every day" thing would have come back, of course. Because one can argue that in trying to change Wolfram & Hart from the inside, Angel was taking the easy way out. It was well-intentioned, but sadly it was never going to work... and really, Angel knew that and it just became more and more apparent. And the more he stayed there, he was the one changing, not them. So, yeah: he needed to get back to truly fighting Wolfram & Hart, even if it was "hard and painful" and he might never really win.
This definitely would have been interesting to see.
#though i also love the actual you're welcome we got. since sarah wasn't available. with cordy. because lord knows we needed#real cordy back--and her done justice again--after s4 did her so dirty#in my perfect world i'd probably say keep you're welcome with cordelia but have buffy appear in 'not fade away' i feel like they were#probably planning that too?#and sarah was also unavailable then?#since angel tells everyone to go do the thing/or be with the person that makes them happy and buffy's the only person/thing to give him tru#happiness. but i also love that he went to see connor in that episode#so perfect world for me: you're welcome with cordy and angel goes to see both buffy and connor in 'not fade away'#if only...#buffy the vampire slayer#angel the series#bangel#amends#you're welcome#not fade away
