Turns out, Norah Jean Shepard is not as bad a dancer as she seems. At least, not when the music slows down. Once the music slows down, she shines.

Kaidan’s hand is on her waist, his left holding her right hand in the air, while her left hand rests on his chest, fingers twiddling with his lapel. Even in the middle of dancing she’s full of restless energy, biotics buzzing underneath her skin, reverberating with his own.

She leads him through the steps of the waltz, and he picks up the steps quicker than he thought he would when she’d suggested the idea. He looks down at their feet for a second, admiring the way she moves gracefully, even with the long black dress swirling around her. His gaze returns to her face, and she’s beaming up at him with a 1000-watt smile. Even in heels, she has to look up to meet his eye.

It’s easy to forget they’re not here for a fancy date. They’re here to figure out who hired a bunch of mercenaries to kill her. They’ll have to come back one of these nights, after the galaxy’s learned how to take care of itself again.

The music swells and then slows to a stop, and Norah Jean takes half a step away, removing her hand from his chest. Before she can get too far, he draws her back in, bringing her hand to his mouth, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her knuckles, then letting her go.

When he takes a step back, she takes a step forward, grabbing his lapels and hauling him down for a proper kiss.
