I just found out from the sopranos of all places that taxman was used in an ad for H&R block in about 2002 lmaoooooo
#the dialogue in this episode was god tier#“the revolution got sold” “you hear the beatles for h&r block?”#though in this case it's a bit like the expression “you can't polish a turd but you can roll it around in glitter” but in reverse#you can't tarnish a turd but you can roll it around in.... more shit I guess? whatever the opposite of glitter is idk#in 2002 people were already exploiting tupac's legitimate legacy of activism to make a quick buck so why not reference that?#an actual “the revolution has been turned into an aesthetic being exploited to enrich people who aren't even involved in it” moment#I know it's presumably bc the beatles are/were a broader reference#but still not a great one given the context of the episode#which is also how I feel when people complain that now and then was just a manipulative cash grab tbh#you're not wrong but if that kind of thing genuinely bothers you then the beatles are not for you lol#every single thing about them has been commodified and sold in every way possible.... for a lot of people that's part of the appeal#op#the sopranos
