A dragons wish Chapter 6
Read here
Reblogs appreciated
The dwarrows hadn’t moved an inch since Bilbo had left the forges running after Ruby. They stood around the cushion-castle the little girl had built, like fierce guards made of stone, staring into space. He stopped, right in front of Balin, frantically trying to catch his breath.
“The… The dragon! It was huge. A gigantic beast! Even larger than I ever dared to imagine,” he huffed.
Instantly he had their attention. The dragon was real, and very much alive. A cold shudder ran down the hobbit’s spine. The whole situation had just drastically changed.
The eyes of the company simultaneously shifted from Bilbo to Thorin. The king hadn’t said a word so far, in fact he hadn’t shown any kind of reaction since the young girl had left them in a hurry.
“Thorin?” Balin tried it again.
He didn’t react, didn’t move. Thorin just stared into the empty hallway where Ruby had vanished not long ago.
Ruby!
“It has Ruby,” Bilbo whispered in horror.
Just now he remembered the clothes the dragon had in his massive claws. Looking up he could read the same horror in the faces of the dwarrows.
~
Yes, he was their king, and yes he had become a good friend for Bilbo over time, but his behavior was just too much!
Ori sat down next to him, taking a break from barricading the large entrance with massive boulders. The young scribe was by far stronger than he looked. When Bilbo had complimented him for it, Ori had only shyly mumbled something about having it inherited from their mother and that Dori was even stronger.
Glancing to the side he could spot a familiar book in the scribe's hands. The book he had received from Ruby. It was bound in leather and rather plain looking. There were no golden ornaments or embedded jewels on the cover.
Thinking back, the hobbit hadn’t seen any fancy jewelry or other valuable things on or near Ruby. The braids in her hair were held together by wooden clips and beads, she hadn’t worn any bracelets, rings or necklaces. Even her clothes looked rather old and had many patches and parts that were repaired.
“What is it about?” the hobbit nodded towards the book, watching the nimble fingers of the scribe caressing the worn pages.
“Stories, it seems, about adventures and magical creatures from faraway places. One is about a young elven woman visiting her grandmother in the dark forest. Sadly the grandmother had been eaten by a warg, which now posed as the grandmother to also eat the young girl. Luckily a ranger comes by, freeing the grandmother as well as the young girl. Which is highly unlikable, but still… I like the happy ending,” clutching the book even harder he stood back up, rejoining his brothers.
Bilbo was the only one who noticed the faint brushing of the young scribe's hands against the rough palm of the warrior as he passed by him.
~
Dwalin sighted. This was not what he had hoped for, not at all. Still, having the little scribe by his side gave him strengths to press on. With a last look on the youngest of the dwarrows he left the front gate to inform his king of the newly arrived visitor.
“Thorin,” upon entering the grand hall of the forges he noticed how the king hastily straightened himself, “we have a guest on our front door.”
Hope sparked up in the blue eyes, but almost instantly died down again as Dwalin lightly shook his head. Thorin’s head dropped, facing the floor. His hand clenched around a silver necklace of some sort, he continued to stare at the floor in front of him.
“Who is it?” Thorin managed to ask after a moment of silence.
The warrior tried to gloss over the amusement in his voice with a khoff. This was really not the time to laugh at the childish reaction of his friend. Still, seeing Thorin, king under the mountain, his brother in arms and on the battlefield sitting in the middle of a cushion castle, surrounded by fluffy blankets, soft cushions and pressing a vibrant pink, flower-shaped cushion against his chest, was rather unsettling and strange.
“Bard the bowman from Lake Town is asking for an audience with you,” the warrior simply answered.
Thorin didn’t react. He hadn’t really moved since Ruby had left and had holed himself up in the forges as soon as the devastating news Bilbo had brought them had gotten through to him fully. Even now he was only staring into the empty hallway, while his fingers fumbled with the strange silver necklace.
Dwalin sighted again. If he hadn’t saized command shortly after Bilbo had returned, who knows what would have happened. Sure, they all were shocked and devastated at the horrible news of the dragon returning and taking the wee lass with him, still, Thorin was their king, their leader. The warrior hadn’t seen his friend like this since Frerin had gone missing. Enough was enough! There was a pile of work left and Dwalin was rather sick of it.
“Thorin, you are my king and friend. I respect that you are…” not sure how to describe the sight he saw before him Dwalin coughed again and continued on, “You will come with me and if I have to drag you there myself. You ought to be king and welcome our kin not long from now, so behave like one!”
~
Bombur nearly choked on the bite he had just taken from the large sandwich Bifur had brought them all. Hastily he took a large swig of the water he held in his other hand. Blinking twice the cook realized that this was no daydream or illusion at all. There was Dwalin, which was nothing out of the ordinary, striding down the hallway and dragging something behind him.
Only after looking a second time he identified the thing as a person, huddelt into a fluffy blanket and clutching a bright pink and flower-shaped cushion as their king. The glare thorin gave him was not to be misunderstood. Still, how was anyone able to take their leader seriously after seeing him like this ?!
Shoving the rest of the sandwich into his mouth he poked Bifur in the back. The old warrior spun around and the axe in his head gleamed in the low light. Letting loose a wave of rapid Khuzdul he picked up a pebble and threw it across the hallway at Gloin, who was currently talking to Balin.
Gloin reacted as expected. Angrily he turned around to look for the person who was responsible for interrupting his chat with the king’s advisor. Before he could utter a curse his eyes locked onto the scene right in front of him. Dwalin, dragging what looked like a pink-reddish lump of clothes behind him towards the main gate. The pebble surely couldn’t have hit him that hard!
Balin on the other side only buried his face in his hands. He was used to seeing his brother doing impulsive and sometimes rather stupid things, as he had always been there to help him out in the end an straighten things out. But this was a first in case of stupidity and impulsiveness. Dwalin had to see how to get out of this mess afterwards all on his own.
~
Bilbo stopped abruptly in his movement. He had rushed to the front gate as soon as the raven had delivered the message that the rest of the company and two other people were making their way towards the mountain. He didn’t want to wait any longer to finally see Bofur again. Surely he would get an ear full, cause he had left his dwarf behind and didn’t wake him in time. But at that time Bilbo was rather fond of the idea to at least assure Bofur to survive the wrath of the dragon.
Bofur, still holding the hobbits hand, was forced to stop as well. Questioning he followed the line of sight of his beloved. With the utmost of his will and control he was able to disguise his laughter as mere coughing. Bilbo’s elbow in his ribs made him turn towards the hobbit again, he also couldn’t contain his wide grin. For the dignified leader of the company to be dragged through his own mountain at that!
Bilbo’s amusement vanished and was replaced with worry and sorrow. For a moment there he had forgotten the reason for the king’s odd behavior. Bofur frowned, there seemed to be more to this situation than they all had let on.
“* Kidhuzel , what is the matter?” concerned he lightly squeezed the hand holding his.
“I’ll tell you the story behind that in a bit,” Bilbo promised him, before moving on.

Oin had stayed with Bard and Tauriel to chat some more about medicinal herbs after reassuring himself that the two princes and especially Kili were alright to go on on their own. The elven woman had fussed some more over the dark haired prince, but respected the decision that she would have to wait outside.
Kili still leaned on his older brother even though he tried his best to walk on his own. Facing down he made sure not to trip over anything and to burden Fili any further. Strangely enough the floor was sparkly clean aside from the trail of mud the others must have left behind.
To his own surprise the front gate was almost unscratched and not missing as he had assumed from his uncle's stories. Even more, it was warm inside and the hallways were lit! There was no foul smell of dragon or whatever he might have left behind. It felt almost homely and welcoming. The others had accomplished so much in such a short amount of time! He could do nothing else but be astonished by their capability.
Fili stopped abruptly and nearly let his brother slide from his shoulder. Luckily Kili was quick enough and steadied himself before kissing the floor.
“By the beard of-” looking up, Kili had wanted to lecture his older brother on how to properly handle hurt and ill dwarrows, but stopped himself.
There must be some poison left inside his system, which made him hallucinate once more. No other explanation was reasonable or possible. With his free, left hand he rubbed his eyes. Still there.
Pinching Fili’s arm he tried to wake himself. The immediate response, a light jab in his stomach assured him that this was real.
Not being able to take his eyes off of the unreal scene in front of him he wasn’t able to see the unbelieving look in Filis eyes and how the blond prince's jaw seemed to drop even further.
“Uncle… is that really you?!” Kili was not entirely sure if he was seeing things or if this was reality, but either way, it was hilarious.
He couldn’t wait to write to his mother about it! This would provide them with amusement and embassesment from the king till forever! Fili also seemed to have overcome the shock. Leaning onto his older brother Kili could feel the faint shaking, which got stronger by the second, signing that Fili was trying his best to hold in his laughter.
A sly grin appeared on Kili’s lips. He would certainly have to help his older brother, no? With a hearty jab of his elbow he forced the first prince to break into laughter. Not able to hold in his own amusement he joined in and filled the halls with their voices. Even the deathly glare Thorin was rather known and feared for couldn’t stop them. The pink cushion and the blanket he was wrapped into made him look rather ridiculous than intimidating.
~
“I brought the king.”
Tauriel’s face turned to stone, expressionless as only elves were capable of, while Bard tried his best to keep his mouth shut, the face strangely red as if he had forgotten how to breathe. Confused Oin turned around, the rather worn trumpet in his hand. What was going on?

The smell of various foods being cooked and the chatter of merchants trying hard to sell their merchandise to the dwellers walking around surrounded you. Were you hungry? Sure, and the delicious smells weren’t helping. But you had no time to stop.
Looking over your shoulder, you pulled your bag up higher as you continued to be unnoticeable during your walk through the crowd. It was second nature to you, trying to appear as a member of the crowd when in reality, you were capable of taking out any one of them who came up to you.
But that’s not what you wanted. You just wanted to make it back to your room at the inn you kept for yourself— frequent payments going to the innkeeper to ensure that no one ever takes your room. Bouncing between worlds was what you normally did; getting any information you could that you knew would be useful against the Empire. But this was the one place you might even consider home.
Finally making it to the inn, you immediately knew something was off once you reached your room. The small trace of mud right in front of your door caught your eye, and you could smell the faint scent of a cigarra leading into your room. The innkeeper knew enough not to ever bother you, and you knew for a fact they didn’t take up a smoking habit.
Has someone come after you?
The hair stood on the back of your neck— you were on high alert now. Keeping your hand on your blaster at your hip, you slowly open the door, and step inside. Scanning the room, you caught sight of a shadow lurking in the corner, and whip out your blaster. The figure moves, and you aim directly at them as they speak.
“Take it easy—”
“Who are you? What are you doing here?”
The figure— a man— slowly emerges into the light, hands raised out in surrender as you keep your blaster raised on them. The light from outside flashes a streak across his face, but you still don’t recognize him. You keep your back foot planted, in case you need to make a run for it as he steps closer.
“So, Nova wasn’t code for any hidden information. It was the name of a person.”
The name set something off in you. There was only one person who called you that— and the last time you saw him was days ago.
Nova.
You didn’t even know where the name came from. Instead of your real name, he’d begun to refer to you as Nova.
Why do you call me that?
I don’t know, he shrugged. It suits you.
So the fact that this guy happened to know this specific name meant something was wrong. And if something was wrong, you had to get out of there immediately.
Just as you go to turn, the man reaches for his blaster.
“Don’t try to run.”
Your grip tightens around your own, but you notice that he doesn’t even pull his blaster from the holster. “Why shouldn’t I?”
“Because we would just find you all over again, and I really don’t want to spend the next few moments chasing after you.”
You stare at him, not moving as he lowers his hand from his side. The fact that he not once even removed his weapon befuddled you. If he was after you, wouldn’t he have threatened you or tried to attack you by now?
“...Who are you?”
“That’s not important.” He answers and you scoff. “Now, are you going to lower that?”
“Not until you tell me why you’re here.”
The man sighs and steps closer into the light, in which you finally take notice of his jacket. Standard military, on his shoulder sits a patch the same color as his jacket as if to hide some type of insignia. You recognize that type of tactic instantly and it finally hits you.
“Are you from the Rebellion?” You ask, watching as the corner of his mouth twitches up.
“You’re a good observer. I can see now why Andor—”
“Cassian Andor?” You speak quickly, the slight panic evident in your tone. Cassian would have scolded you for that, for sure.
Don’t give any indication— even the slightest hint of panic or lack of comfort, he told you many times.They will use that against you.
But he wasn’t here to reprimand you.
When the man nods after you speak you step deeper into the room, but slowly begin sidestepping as you keep your blaster up. There was no room for more mistakes here, you had near to perfect aim, so if this guy tried anything funny he wouldn’t even make it close to you. And you didn’t even have to worry about anyone else because from what you’ve observed, he was the only one here. There were no sideways glances or movements to indicate he was communicating with anyone other than you. You made sure to pay close attention to each and every movement after spotting him.
At least that Cassian would have praised you on.
“What… what’s happened to him?”
“Captain Andor was recently sent undercover to extract some needed information from a weapons dealer. While he was successful in gathering that information, his comm was disconnected before he was able to make it to his ship. We have reason to believe that he’s been captured.”
Captured? The word played on a constant loop in your mind. You could hardly believe what you were told. Cassian… was captured?
The last time you saw Cassian, it was just days ago. He came to visit you, like he often would. You two were close, always have been since you were young. While you weren’t a member of the Rebellion like he was, you still managed to get information that was circling around— information you knew you or the Rebellion could use against the Empire. You were his best informant, and possibly his best friend. You were the only one to know everything about him, and the only one he let his walls down with. He wasn’t like that with anyone else— he did not trust easily. But with you, for some reason it was different.
And it’s also why you couldn’t be honest about your true feelings. He was the only person to know every single detail about you. The only one you trusted, and he was the closest thing to a normal life you had. You had fallen hard into a ditch you couldn’t climb out of, one filled with nothing but longing.
A longing for someone whose entire life revolves around his job— the Rebellion. He did not have time for relationships, everything was strictly for the Rebellion, always. You could not risk losing him, the only person that made this type of life worth living, over your silly feelings.
But he never brought up this mission with you. Was he afraid to ask you? It didn’t make sense, you would always accept when he asked you to be his backup. Would it have even made a difference if you went with him?
“...How do you know about me?” You question, loosening your finger on the trigger, but still aim directly for his heart.
“We didn’t. But he left some messages for his droid. One was to ‘Find Nova’.” He steps towards you cautiously. “We thought it was code for something else, maybe some information he managed to get. We didn’t know it meant… you.”
At least you know he never put you in a position where you would be known. But the fact that he told the Rebellion to look for you must have meant he was in deep bantha fodder. Finally, you lower your blaster— not daring to loosen your grip.
“What do you need?”
“Well, obviously Captain Andor seems to think you’d be of use in retrieving him. We’ve already tracked his last location, we just need someone capable of handling it.”
“And you want to send me?”
“Well, he did give us your name. And from where I’m standing, it seems he’s kept you hidden for quite some time now. Why give us your location? Why send us to you if he didn’t think you were capable enough to retrieve him?”
That was the real question, wasn’t it? Cassian trusted you with his life, did he really trust you enough to know you would be the only one to get him out of whatever trouble he was in?
Sure, you were tactful, good with a blaster, and were capable of defending yourself— all the skills taught to you by Cassian himself. He had trained you how to be observant of your surroundings, to look for ticks people can give off depending on the situation. Even taught you how to prepare quickly in case you needed to run. Sometimes he would not tell you he was stopping by, and would surprise you with a scenario where you would have to defend yourself from him.
What you thought meaningless tests, he reminded you of the type of world you lived in. And being tied to him would have repercussions. If anyone knew about you, that would put you in some deep trouble.
You stare up at the man as he steps closer to you. “What does Captain Andor think you have that could save him?”
Then it hit you: all the information you seemed to pick up about the Empire and the Rebellion. Cassian had to have known that whoever captured him would love whatever information you had. So that had to be the only reason he wanted the Rebellion to find you.
The only way to get Cassian back was to trade yourself for him. You did not care much what would happen to you. And you would be damned if you let anything happen to him.
++++++
It took some time, but you were finally able to make it to the planet where Cassian’s signal had gone dead. From the information you were given, there was a gang residing there that was known for causing trouble around the town. As you roamed around the town, you managed to catch word that it was that specific gang who captured a man.
They were not sympathizers for either the Rebellion or the Empire, so it would make sense that they found out who Cassian was and decided to take him for the hell of it.
You hope he was still alive. If he was, then the fact that you had information on both the sides could be useful enough for a trade.
As you take a sip of your jet juice, your eyes roam along the cantina you made it to. At the bar, you spotted a few members of said gang taking shots and laughing at their own jokes. You figured the easiest way to get taken to their hideout was just to let them capture you, so you had a moment to think of just how to do so.
Grabbing your drink, you loosen up one of the buttons on your front shirt before making your way over. One of the men pushes away from the bar, and you take your chance to roughly bump into his shoulder.
The man turns, and you pretend to sway as if plastered. He raises his brow down at you and you scoff.
“Watch where you’re going, bantha fodder,” you slur, and the man is quick to grab hold of your arm. You grit your teeth, looking up at him.
“Hey—“
“Sure you don’t want to apologize for that, sweetness?”
“Apologize? For what? You were the one in my way.”
His grip tightens around your arm as you challenge him. “Feisty one, eh? You could be a lot of fun.”
You yank your arm away, glaring up at him. “Don’t you know it’s rude to grab a lady?”
In an instant, you throw the remainder of your jet juice in his face, and toss the cup to the ground. A few of his men stand up, but he raises his hand— stopping them.
“No need to fuss,” he grins smugly, wiping his cheeks. “Seems like she was just headed out, anyways. Isn’t that right, sweetness?”
“Yeah, I was,” you sneer, before finally turning in your heel and leaving the cantina.
If these guys were as bad as you had heard, then they would be after you in mere minutes. As you turn down an alleyway, you stay aware of your surroundings— Cassian would’ve praised you on that. From the corner of your eye, you spot movement, but feign obliviousness as you continue walking in the dark.
It was quick— just like you knew it would be. A hand covers your mouth and pushes you against the brick wall, your cries muffled as your cheek scrapes along the stone. A body presses up against you, and you feel the hot breath of your assailant fan against your ear as they lean close.
“Can’t use that mouth of yours now, huh sweetness?” The man from earlier asks. You struggle against him, feeling movement behind you.
You were prepared, you thought of the various scenarios that would happen when they made their way to capture you. But it still caught you by surprise when you felt the prick in your neck and the warm fluid rushing now through your veins.
Instinctively, you try fighting the sleep, but you could already feel your body falling slack into the man’s arms. Before darkness takes over, you’re sure that you saw a flash of Cassian’s face, and can only relax.
++++++
A faint voice is heard— and though it sounds as if it’s far away, you know better. You feel a few small pats against your cheek, and you can’t help the way your head tilts to the side although you try so hard to remember just how your muscles work.
The musty smell of wherever you were had your stomach churning, you would not be surprised if at any moment you threw up all the contents in your stomach. It was cold and damp— you were sure they stripped you of your jacket as you suddenly shivered— goosebumps covering your arms.
Your shoulders were now being shaken violently, and it did not help with the queasiness you were feeling.
“...-ake up, sweetness,” the voice finally breaks through the hazy fog in your mind. “Come on, that’s it.”
Wherever the group must’ve taken you had to have been isolated from the rest of the town. Although it might have just been the effects of the drug, you still couldn’t hear much of the commotion that you had when you walked through the town, so either you were underground or on the outskirts of town.
You can only manage a small groan, the very thought of even trying to articulate words or even trying to deal with the dryness of your mouth is a difficult task for you. It feels like small weights are tied to your eyelids; you try so hard to open them when you feel hands grab your arms to pull you up. A deep chuckle is heard— amused at your inebriated state.
“Bix, go fetch this sweet girl some water.”
There is a grunt in response, you suspect from Bix, and suddenly you feel a hand clamp onto your chin. This is when you use everything you can to open your eyes, and although all you can make out is a blurry figure it is enough.
“There she is,” he grins, his fingernails scratching against your skin. You try pulling away, but he keeps a firm grip. “You know, I have a lot of fun planned for you.”
“Here’s the water, Terek.”
The man— Terek— takes the canteen from Bix, and spins the cap off with his free hand. He pushes it to your lips, and you practically guzzle it down like you had been stranded in the deserts of Tatooine for days. But as soon as he had given it to you, he pulled the canteen away, and all you could do was watch helplessly as he poured the rest on the ground.
“Now,” he tsks. “I think we’re ready to have a little fun, don’t you?”
No, no, no, you think as he stands up. You need to tell them why you’re there. Why you wanted to get caught, who you needed to see...
Cassian.
He was here in the same place as you. You were so close to him. If only you could fucking find the words to speak or move your body the way it needs to.
As Terek walks up to you, you slowly begin to mumble. He smirks, kneeling in front of you.
“You trying to say something, sweetness?”
“...W-Wai… wait,” you finally manage to breathe out, and it feels so good to have at least a small ounce of control despite the drug flowing through your system.
“Wait?” He chuckles. “What do you expect me to wait for—“
“I… You have s-something— someone I need,” you slur, pushing yourself up.
“Oh? Is that so?”
You nod, slowly gaining more control over your movements. “A… rebel.”
Terek’s brow raises, and he sits for a moment as if processing everything, before he gives you a sly smile that sends a shiver along your spine. You try not to show your discomfort, Cassian’s familiar words ringing through your ears.
Don’t give any indication— even the slightest hint of panic or lack of comfort. They will use that against you.
When Terek speaks, the tone of his voice is teasing— almost sing-songy.
“Ah, I see now. It was all a ruse, wasn’t it?” He traces a finger along your cheek, but this time you’re able to pull away. “Bumping into me at the cantina, letting us follow you along down the alleyway. All part of your little plan.”
Terek stands up, snickering as he looks down at you.
“You know, I actually feel flattered. I mean you took the time to find out about us, planned out a way to piss me off, and therefore decided to put yourself in this situation just to get to that man.”
He walks over to a small table, grabbing an item but you can’t quite make it out as he shoves it into his pocket. As he turns back to you, he grins.
“But there is one thing that is just picking at my brain. What could you possibly have that I could use instead of my rebel friend, hmm?”
He lifts your chin up with his dirty finger, and you try hard to focus on him.
“In...information,” you pull your head back from him, swaying a bit. “I can give you… any information.”
“What makes you think I am incapable of getting information, sweet girl?”
“Because… I can give you information about the Alliance and the Empire. You won’t… won’t have to get it from anyone else. You have me,” you mutter. “Just… let him go.”
Terek watches you, before he turns and barks orders at his men in another dialect. A few of them leave, while two others make their way to you. To no avail, you try crawling away only for them to yank you up by your arms.
Your legs felt as if they were made up of Andorian jello, how they shook when they pulled you to stand upright. If you were to stand up with no assistance, you would have only fell back to the ground. You struggle to find your footing as they walk you up to Terek, who smirks down at you.
“Time for some fun.”
++++++
You were dragged along to another room, one in a similar grotesque state as the previous one. The men pulling you along paid no mind to your frail state, and you were sure if they continued moving you the way they did that you were going to vomit.
There was no way of knowing what was going to happen. Terek hasn’t so much as looked back at you the entire walk through their hideout. All you knew was that Terek seemed giddy— there was a slight spring in his step in a cruel way.
“Wakey, wakey!” Terek chimes, and you are brought to a halt behind him. He wasn’t talking to you, though. “Oh, don’t look at me like that. I came bearing a gift. One I think you’ll enjoy very much.”
As soon as Terek steps to the side, you’re shoved down to the floor. You stay lying flat on the floor for a moment, your mind spinning. Placing your palms out on the floor, you struggle to lift yourself up.
“Nova…” The faint whisper of the name has your heart catching in your throat. You’d recognize that voice anywhere.
Suddenly, you hear the sound of someone struggling followed with a loud thwap. Looking up, you see one of Terek’s men bring their blaster back as they step out of your line of view. Now you are staring as Cassian tries to recover from the blow, shaking his head until he locks eyes with you. Two men continue to hold him as they restrain his wrists together behind his back before pushing him to his knees.
While you are relieved to see Cassian, the queasiness in your stomach is now from the realization of the situation setting in. You take a moment to just look at him. There are a few bruises on his face, paired with small scratches and dried blood. He looked exhausted.
“Aw, look at that,” Terek chuckles. “A wonderful reunion! You know, I thought today wasn’t going to be eventful at all but...”
He walks past you and over to Cassian, grabbing his chin roughly. “Did you know that that woman over there wanted to be captured? She was offering to trade herself just to get to you, I mean… she must really care about you, huh?”
Terek practically throws Cassian’s face to the side before spinning on his heel, smiling down at you. “Isn’t that right, sweetness?”
You keep your eyes on Cassian, his jaw tense as he glares up at Terek. Cassian’s eyes then move to you, his gaze slightly softening. All you wanted to do in that moment was rush over to him— to embrace him, to help him, to protect him— but you couldn’t even move properly.
Terek takes a moment, exchanging glances between you both before his expression brightens in an evil way.
“Oh, oh… I see what’s going on here!” He laughs, pointing between the two of you. “How did I not see it!”
Terek claps his hands together, before striding over to you, bending down in front of you. He blocks your view of Cassian and grabs your face with one hand, squeezing your cheeks tight as he forces you to look up at him.
“You love him, don’t you?”
Your eyes widen but you don’t respond, trying to keep your emotions in check. He looks over his shoulder back to Cassian, but you can’t see his reaction. When he looks back down at you, he tenderly brushes his thumb against your cheek.
Suddenly, he reels the same hand back and you don’t even process what happens because in the blink of an eye you topple back down to the floor, a searing hot pain across your cheek. Your mind is in a flurry— the mix of being slapped hard and the effects from the drug has you struggling hard to focus.
You hear Cassian grunting and another hard hit from a blaster as you shake your head. Terek is now hovering behind you and pulls you up by the collar of your shirt, his nose brushing into your hair as he leans down.
“Answer me when I ask you a question, sweet girl,” Terek sneers into your ear, his entire demeanor changing. Letting out a soft whimper, you close your eyes as he releases your shirt and you fall back to the ground.
“Oh, you do,” his tone changes back, and he chuckles. “That’s why you went through all that trouble.”
Terek kneels back down next to you as he pushes your hair out of your face, feigning pity as he caresses the same spot he slapped you.
“Does he know?” He whispers. ”Please tell me he doesn’t because that just makes things a little more interesting.”
You dare not answer again, waiting for another slap as he pulls his hand back but you don’t feel any contact.
Instead, he lifts you up by your arm, practically dragging you across the floor as you can’t manage to find the strength to lift your legs up. Then, he drops you to the floor only for a moment so he can get behind you and lift you up so you are now sitting up, resting against his chest. Terek holds your head up by wrapping his arm across your neck.
Cassian is directly in front of you, inhaling sharply through his nose. You are forced to look at him, feeling helpless and despicable as Terek holds you up.
“Now, we’re going to play a game. For your sakes, I hope you both participate,” he chuckles into your ear.
Cassian stares down Terek, and if looks could kill you knew he would be dead in an instant if it were up to Cassian.
“Okay, sweetness, I want you to tell me the truth. Do you love him?”
Your breath hitches, and all you can do is look at Cassian with a mix of panic and remorse. This is not how you wanted to admit your feelings. Hell, you didn’t even plan on facing them at all.
Although you know it’s all a game for Terek— a harsh, cruel game— it’s torture for you, and he knows it. How could you answer him? How could you possibly look Cassian in the eye and admit your true feelings?
So you stare. You stare and try to read the look in Cassian’s eyes, but you can’t. All those times Cassian had you work on analyzing people’s emotions, but you could not read his own at this moment.
“Don’t make me ask you again,” Terek growls deeply against your ear. “Do you love him?”
And you still can’t bring yourself to answer, instead you look to the ground, trying hard to bite back tears.
“Alright, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
You look up as soon as the first punch is thrown, eyes wide with terror as Cassian’s head falls to the side. As soon as he lifts his head back up, another punch is thrown. Then another. And then another. The pain of just watching was unbearable— it was as if you were getting hit alongside him.
“Stop!” You finally shout, struggling in Terek’s hold. “Don’t hit him!”
Terek’s men pay no mind to you, and this time you watch as Cassian takes a blow to the stomach, hunching over until he is pulled back.
“You know what you have to say, sweet girl.”
Cassian’s eyes meet yours, and you begin sobbing, silently begging them to spare him— to spare him from the physical pain he was subjected to as well as to spare him from having to hear you admit your feelings.
“I’m sorry,” you start to let your head drop down. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry—”
“No, no, no,” Terek quickly grabs your chin, forcing you to lift your head to watch as Cassian gets punched in the ribs. You are screaming now, but Terek’s voice still manages to break through. “You know what you have to say. Don’t start apologizing now—”
“—I’m so sorry, Cassian—”
“—This could have been dealt with easily,” he continues to say over your screams. “All you had to do was—”
“Okay!” You shout and Terek holds one hand up.
Cassian groans out in pain, as Terek’s men step away. Each breath he takes seems just a struggle for him, and all you can do is sob at the state he is in.
“Aw, don’t cry. Don’t cry, Shh...” Terek presses his cheek to yours. “Now, I will give you one more chance to answer: do you love him?”
Looking up with tear-filled eyes, you watch as Cassian slowly lifts his head up. The sight of fresh blood upon his face churns your stomach— you don’t want him to have to suffer anymore. Fixing him with an apologetic look, you swallow thickly.
“It’s true…” You whisper, only for your voice to rise just a bit. “It’s true, I do love you, Cassian. I always have… I’m sorry…”
Cassian’s expression is light and you thought for a split moment that there was a bit of hope in his eyes. But then he closes his eyes, and that one movement seems to shatter everything inside of you.
How did you expect for him to look? Relieved? No, of course he wouldn’t. Because although Cassian did care for you, it did not mean that he would reciprocate your feelings and suddenly love you as well.
“See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Terek hums, looking down at you. Your head drops, and you watch as the tears from a small, barely there puddle on the floor. “Or was it?”
Terek gasps playfully. “Oh, no… you’ve been keeping this to yourself, haven’t you?”
You squeeze your eyes shut— you hope that if you do all of this goes away: Terek, the torture… the look on Cassian’s face.
“Oh… I wonder just how long you’ve kept this for yourself, sweet thing,” Terek clicks his tongue. “Must’ve been pretty lonely, craving a man who didn’t even know the true extent of your feelings.”
He lifts your chin up, gripping it tightly as you keep your eyes closed. “Let’s see how he feels about all this.”
He begins brushing the tears off of your cheek. You flinch from his touch and he chuckles. “My, my… isn’t she beautiful? Even after crying?”
He turns to Cassian, who glowers at Terek as he continues to drag his thumb down your cheek. He does not even look at you.
“Do you want to fuck her, Cassian?”
The way Terek says his name fills you with such disgust. You were such an idiot. You did not mean to say his name, it just came out. If you weren’t in the situation you were in now, Cassian sure would have given you a piece of his mind right now.
Cassian’s entire body becomes tense, and while you have seen him angry before, the look he gives Terek causes you to shiver.
“I mean, with a face like hers,” Terek squeezes your cheeks. “How could you not want to stare down at her while you fuck her hard and rough? Oh, I bet she makes the sweetest sounds.”
But Cassian continues to stare straight ahead, not flicking his eyes over to you once. Your heart aches— the fact that Cassian can’t even bring himself to look at you hurts you in the worst possible way.
When Terek releases your cheeks, you are relieved. Until he grips your hair tightly and yanks it back. A slight whimper escapes you and Terek chuckles deeply, trailing a finger along your exposed throat. “See? Oh, Maker. You could definitely have the time of your life getting the best sounds out of this one.”
You are sure he’s ripped some strands of hair based on the stinging pain of your scalp. All you can do is stare at the ceiling, feeling Terek’s disgusting warm breath against your neck as he continues to taunt Cassian.
“If you want, I can give you both a few minutes of alone time. We won’t even peek… much.”
A string of chuckles are heard, but then it is soon followed by the sound of someone grunting and scuffles. You manage to look down, only to catch a glimpse of Cassian now being shoved onto the ground while another man covers his face, blood gushing through his fingers.
“Oh, seems that we might have struck a nerve. Which makes me wonder…”
Terek suddenly pushes you to the floor, and you feel as if you can finally breathe freely. It felt as if he had been holding you up for hours, you did not even realize that the drug was slowly fading away from your body. You were able to push yourself up just barely— enough to watch as Terek makes his way over to Cassian who is now being pulled back up by two men.
Cassian still does not turn to face you, instead watches as Terek leans down close to him. Although you can’t see his face, the picture of him grinning smugly at Cassian is clear in your mind simply from the tone in his voice.
“You don’t just want to fuck her, right? You love her too, don’t you?”
The tension in the room was palpable— a least to you. Everyone else just seemed eager to hear just what Cassian had to say.
Not you.
You were not ready to hear what he had to say in response to that question— especially after you had just admitted your feelings to him. But then it dawns on you.
He doesn’t feel the same way.
Which, of course he doesn’t. How could he? More importantly, why would he?
There was not anything special about you. All you knew how to do was sneak around and trade around information. Cassian could easily find someone to replace you.
All the times you thought that there could be a chance with him— all the memories that flood your mind of the possible maybe you thought at the moment that he cared for you as you had for him— wither away.
Another minute goes by and Cassian still does not answer. Terek lets out a sigh, and you quickly look to the floor as he begins to make his way back to you.
“I told you both, but it seems that you are just as equally stubborn.” You feel a pair of hands lift you up by your arms, and suddenly you are back to facing Terek, who stops in front of you. He shakes his head, putting on a mock pout. “I’m so sorry about this, sweet girl.”
The slap is hard and fast across your cheek, just like the first time moments ago. You hear Cassian yelling something that you do not catch, but Terek does not let up. Another hard slap hits your opposite cheek, and you can’t help it as your vision swirls while your head falls to the side.
Even as you are indisposed, Terek hits you again. This time, his fist is closed and connects hard with your jaw. Instead of keeping you up, Terek’s men let you fall to the ground and you feel Terek’s hard boot connect with your abdomen, knocking the air clear out of you. Cassian must have said something, because Terek halts the next blow to turn to him.
“Is there something you’d like to say?” He asks, palms splayed open. “This can all stop.”
Despite the dizziness and aching pain in your torso, you manage to barely lift your head off the ground. Your vision sets, and you are able to see Cassian as his face twists in anger.
But when his gaze flicks down to you, his features soften— his eyes apologetic and begging for forgiveness. His eyes do not leave yours this time, staring deep into them.
“Nova…” You do not expect him to speak, and you definitely do not expect him to continue to do so in Festian.
Cassian had taught you a few basic phrases here and there when you asked. But, there were times where he would randomly speak to you in Festian without translating. There was particularly one phrase that he would always tell you, and no matter how many times you bugged him about it, he would just simply smile and say the same thing after.
I’ll tell you another time.
So it caught your attention when you heard him speak that same phrase to you with a different look in his eyes.
“Oh, now you’re not playing fair,” Terek waves a finger at Cassian, before glancing over to you. “Well, if that’s how you want to play it…”
Terek stalks towards you, like a hungry nexu on it’s way to pounce on its prey. Your eyes move down to his hand as he reaches down to his side, and when you see light reflecting from the blade, your throat tightens. Trying to crawl away from him with no avail, Terek easily lifts you up by your hair, and drags you along the floor back towards Cassian.
At this point, your heartbeat rings in your ears— you can barely hear Cassian yelling as you are brought in front of him with the blade now lined up with your throat. Terek presses up the blade against your skin, and you try everything in your power not to move.
Balling your fists up— trying to still the trembling throughout your body— you don’t even realize that you’re crying until Terek reaches up and wipes a tear away.
“Now, since you don’t like to play by the rules, I’m proposing a new game,” Terek articulates each word as sharp as the knife in his hand. He grips tightly onto your hair, and you don’t hold back the cry as he does so.
Cassian’s eyes widen at the sight of the knife, and he tries desperately to pull out of the henchmen’s grasp. Terek laughs— a dark and evil sound— at his despair.
“Here's what you’re going to do, Cassian,” Terek sneers. “You’re going to tell our girl here that everything is going to be okay. That she will be okay.”
The tears are falling harder now as you feel the edge of the knife push harder against your skin. Your hands are on Terek’s arm, trying to pull it down, to pull the knife away, but it’s no use. He keeps it in place.
“I want you to lie to her. Go on, make her believe that she’s going to be okay.”
Cassian stares, his eyes flicking back and forth from the knife against your throat to your tear-filled eyes. You had never seen that level of fear from Cassian before, and it only urged on your own. Closing your eyes, you try to steady your breathing until you hear Cassian’s voice.
“...Nova,” he says, the name so soft— softer than you’d ever heard him say before. “Nova, look at me.”
You hesitate to do so, but slowly open up your eyes to see him. His expression has changed, it is much more calmer than before, as is the tone of his voice.
“It’s going to be okay. You’re going to be okay, I promise you.”
He says it so tenderly that you... almost believe him. The gentle regard in his eyes, the quiet, calm tone of his voice. But you know better. He was trained to do anything in his power to get people to believe him— to believe every little word that comes out of his mouth.
There is a quiet moment between you both as you stare into each other’s eyes, as if it were just the two of you and there was no Terek or his men in the same room. It takes you back to all those quiet moments you had spent with him when he would visit with you— talking about plans of when the war was over or how you would both change certain aspects of your lives. That sense of comfort and hope fills you, and you find yourself giving him a sad smile as if you do believe him.
“Alright, take him away.”
In an instant, that hope is torn as Cassian is being pulled up to his feet, and you immediately fear the worst.
“No!” You scream, trying to pull out of Terek’s grasp, but he only pushes the knife harder against your neck. You ignore the sting of the blade as it barely pierces through the top layer of your skin as they drag Cassian away.
At this point, you are not scared of the knife anymore. You are scared— no, you are terrified of what they are going to do to Cassian.
“Ah, ah, ahh….” Terek hums, leaning close to you. “You’re going to stay with me and play a little longer, sweet girl.”
Cassian calls out your name and tries hard to yank himself away, his eyes still glued on yours. The room fills with your sobs and Cassian’s voice as he continues shouting the entire time, until his shouts fade away the further they take him.
When you can no longer hear his voice, a part of you feels empty. It’s almost as if your heart was ripped out of your chest and dragged away with Cassian as they took him out of the room. Was this going to be the last time you saw Cassian? Was the last thing you said to him going to be you admitting your love for him?
Did he even believe you when you did? Or did he just think that it was all to get them to stop hurting him?
The next thing you knew, you were being pushed onto the floor and flipped over onto your back. As you kick and squirm and scream, Terek straddles you, making it hard for you to try and get away. He grabs your wrists and pins them above your head as you sob, before holding them down with one hand and bringing the knife back up.
Terek starts to drag it just barely along your cheek, and you automatically freeze out of reflex. He grins— an evil image that will be etched in your mind until he is finished with you.
“Who knew rebels could fall in love, hm?”
Closing your eyes, you feel the knife continue to move along every inch of your face in a tantalizing way. The end of the knife pricks into your cheek, and you feel a drop of blood slide down your cheek along with your tears. You did not even realize you were holding in a breath until you felt him lean down.
“Now that we’re alone, what do you say we have some real fun, hm?”
This was not how you wanted it to end. You did not want to die at the hands of some gang leader, but all the training you went through, all the escape tactics Cassian taught you, was simply nonexistent in your mind at this point.
All you can do is lie there, feeling helpless and alone. You close your eyes, trying to think of something, or rather someone else as you wait for your untimely demise.
Imagine your confusion when you hear the shot of a blaster but don’t feel any sense of pain. When you open your eyes, you watch as Terek topples over on top of you. Staying completely still, you wait for him to make another movement only to realize he was not even breathing.
Before you could take a moment to process everything, his body is being moved off of you, and your eyes are met with Cassian’s.
“Cassian,” you breathe out his name softly— he was okay. He was alive and breathing. He was right there in front of you, close enough for you to touch. They managed to get to him before the worst could happen. And you were so relieved.
Just as you go to reach up for him, a pair of hands slide underneath your arms to lift you up. Looking up, you see the Rebel, Melshi as you remembered from his visit, helping you stand. Instinctively, you clutch onto him, not wanting to be pulled away from the first sense of safety you found since getting in this mess.
“You’re okay,” he says as he lets you hold onto him.
“Took you guys long enough,” you mutter, reaching into a secret pocket in your pants and placing the tracker in his hand.
“Sorry, had trouble with his other men stationed outside.”
You nod simply, before you glance over at Cassian, who watches you closely as you continue to hold onto Melshi. Your heart races as he takes one step forward, his mouth opening as if he wants to tell you something.
He doesn’t say anything.
Instead, he presses his lips together in a thin line and nods up at Melshi, before turning back and talking to another Rebel.
You didn’t understand. There wasn’t anything he had to say to you? He didn’t want to talk about what happened? Did you really ruin things from your confession?
The lump in your throat grows, but you hold back your tears. You could not display your true emotions— you did not want Cassian to see the hurt.
“Come on,” Melshi‘s voice pulls you from your thoughts, leading you out of that terrible room. You still clutch onto him, trying not to take notice of all the bodies as he takes you to the transport.
++++++
You followed Cassian’s own advice— put up your own walls to hide your feelings. The entire flight back, you sat quiet as Melshi placed bacta patches on your visible injuries before leaving you be. Cassian had made his way to the front of the ship, glancing at you every now and then as he took care of his own injuries.
It did not surprise you that he still had not made any effort to talk with you, though with every gaze thrown your way it sure seemed like he wanted to. You were confused, so to say, but you remained impassive.
Maybe Cassian not talking to you was the best thing to happen. Maybe Cassian was not meant to be in your life forever. Hell, with the lives you both live how could you think romance was on the table?
Maybe it was for the best. Maybe you could easily get over this and focus on yourself and what you could do next.
“Hey,” Melshi walks back, handing you a canteen. “We’ll take a look of your injuries when we get to base.”
“I’m fine—“
“You’ve probably got a cracked rib guessing from the way you wince each time you take a breath.”
You do not respond, instead look up at Cassian as he makes his way to the cockpit. He still had not made any attempt to talk to you.
Melshi sighs. “At least let the doctors take a proper look, and then you can be on your way.”
That catches your attention and you look back to him. “Wait, do you think they’ll let me take a ship?”
He scoffs humorously, shaking his head. “I highly doubt that, but I can get you a ride if you need one.”
“Can you?”
He nods, “Buddy of mine has to make a stop at the Ring of Kafrene, but I’m sure they would—“
“No, no… that’s perfect for me.”
Before Melshi can speak, Cassian walks up. Instinctively, you straighten up, as if waiting for him to speak to you directly.
“... We’ll be landing soon.”
“Yes, Captain,” Melshi stands, moving to grab his equipment while you are left alone with Cassian.
The anticipation of waiting for him to say something— anything— hung thickly in the air. So much runs through your mind as he stares down at you, and you wonder what kind of thoughts are running through his own. He looks around, before he steps closer, and you see the soft glow in his features, especially his eyes.
“Are you okay?”
You blink once, then twice, and then a third time. “You’re seriously asking me that?”
You were not quite sure why you answered with that. You did not mean to seem harsh but it was quite obvious you weren’t okay. You knew that.
Cassian knew that.
His demeanor changes instantly, and he is back to being the Rebel spy. He shakes his head, his hands moving to his hips.
“You shouldn’t have been there. They shouldn’t have found you— I… I shouldn’t have given your name to them.”
“Yeah, but you did,” you mutter softly. “And I was there. I was there to help you, to rescue you.”
“By trading yourself for me? Why would you think that would work?”
“I told them I could give them information, he seemed interested—“
“Nova, he didn’t care about the information. Why didn’t you see that earlier?” He snaps. “You should have known that was all a game to him.”
“Well, I’m sorry I was more worried about finding you and trying to get you out.”
“I had it handled.”
“That’s not what it looked like to me,” you answer, staring up at him— challenging him.
The ship shakes as it lands, but Cassian keeps his gaze on you until another Rebel comes up to him. Part of you is thankful, because you knew at any moment you would probably burst into tears.
As soon as the ramp lowers down, you hastily make your way out of the transport in search of the medbay. The humid air hits your skin, and you can feel the sweat forming on your brow as you make your way through the crowded hangar. With every step a painful jolt shoots up from your side, and you try pressing your palm flat for some added pressure.
You thought back to that conversation: did Cassian just think you were simply an idiot? Why didn’t you see that earlier? You picture the annoyed look in his eyes, you should have known it was all a game to him.
And maybe he was right, you should have known from that moment you encountered Terek that he was never going to let you and Cassian go without repercussions.
But what infuriated you was the fact that all Cassian seemed to think of you was that you were clueless. That you went in simply without thinking and were just being an idiot.
Just as you make your way past a group of pilots, you feel a hand grasp yours, and quickly turn around. Cassian has his back to you as he pulls you along, leading you out of the hangar to a more secluded area.
As soon as you both are alone, Cassian stops and turns to you with an unreadable look on his face. He still has your hand in his, and doesn’t seem too eager to release it.
“I have to go to the medbay,” you sigh, moving to pull your hand away. Cassian ignores your statement and continues to keep a tight grip on your hand.
“Nova, what’s going on?”
“We already talked about this—“
“No, there’s more and you’re just not telling me.”
Turning away from him, you try to keep your thoughts exactly that— all you wanted to do was get checked out in the medbay and catch a ride away from this humid, seemingly crowded base.
But Cassian was not stupid, he could easily read you like a book— you wouldn’t even be surprised if he could even read your thoughts at some times.
Your jaw tightens, and all you can do is shake your head at him. “I’m sick of this.”
“Sick of what—“
“Sick of you thinking I am just clueless in these situations. That I don’t know what I’m doing— I knew what I was doing the moment I let them take me.”
He says your name but you don’t relent. You’re angry— angry that he is trying to get out of talking about what happened other than you being there.
“And I’m sick of you trying to cause a fight over something else rather than talking about the real issue here.”
“And what’s the real issue here?”
“What did you say to me? Back there when Terek…”
You cut yourself off, unable to finish the sentence before exhaling shakily. “I know that the situation wasn’t… ideal, but what I said was the truth. And it kills me that you had to find out that way, but it’s true. I do love you, Cassian. I always have. But the look on your face after I said it I just…”
You finally look up at him with pleading eyes. “What did you say when Terek… You’ve said that to me before, and every single time I asked what it meant you never told me. But then out of the blue you say the exact same phrase when Terek was playing his game with us. So just… please. Please, Cassian, be honest with me.”
Cassian remains silent, and all you can do is stare at him, silently begging him to speak even if it’s to reject you or even if it’s any indication that he does harbor the same feelings you do. You just want him to tell you what he never did all those other moments he spent with you.
He opens his mouth and you all but ready yourself until he looks behind you, his gaze darkening with emotion. When you turn, you spot Melshi jogging up to you, nodding at Cassian before moving his attention to you.
“Sorry for interrupting, I was just checking to see if you went to the medbay yet.”
“No… not yet.”
“Okay, well make sure you do and come find me after, okay? I’ll help you out.”
“I will,” you smile softly. “Thank you, Melshi.”
“Of course,” he turns to Cassian. “General Draven is looking for you, Captain.”
“I’ll be there shortly,” Cassian answers, stiffly. You take note of his tone, glancing over at him. Melshi doesn’t seem to catch it, instead salutes him before giving you a nod and walking off.
“So, you’re friendly with Melshi now?”
A flicker of irritation flashes through you— he was not being serious, was he? Was he just trying to say anything to get out of this conversation? You can only scoff at his words.
“So now you’re just trying to start another fight? Is that it?”
Cassian’s previously hardened gaze eases, and he moves to reply but you are too fired up to let him speak.
“I just don’t understand you, Cassian. You say or do one thing and then the next you’re back to being this…” you wave your hands out at him. “And I’m just— I’m sick of it!”
“Nova—“
“Don’t. Please, just… I’m tired, Cassian. I’m tired and I’m confused and I just don’t know what to do anymore.”
You feel tears begin to brim— the ache in your chest becomes overwhelming the longer you stand there staring into Cassian’s eyes. You were tired, physically and emotionally. There was not much more you could deal with, especially not this.
“What was it you said to me? Please… I don’t know how much longer I can dance around this with you. I’ve known you for so long and yet you still build up these walls when you’re with me that I can’t seem to get past.”
You didn’t even know you had begun to cry until Cassian brought his hand up to your face, gently brushing the tears away with your cheek. He has comforted you before— held you when you had nightmares. So instead of pulling away, you can only lean into his touch automatically despite the emotions boiling within you.
“I just want the truth, okay? Why can’t you just give me that? How much longer do I have to beg for you to—“
In a moment faster than light speed, Cassian had used his hands to grab your cheeks and pull you towards him, capturing your lips with his in a fervent, passionate kiss. You’re too shocked to move away, so many thoughts running through your mind that it all becomes a blur in an instant.
It was everything— the moment his lips touched yours, you melted. You became putty in his hands as he tilted his head to deepen the kiss.
But yet…
After years of imagining what his lips would feel like pressed against yours, you wanted to lose yourself within the kiss, you truly did. But as you pull back and stare up into Cassian’s dark luminous eyes, you’re left more confused than ever.
Was there a sense of affection in his eyes? Or were you just hoping that it was there, just as you had hoped he loved you the way that you love him?
Or worse, was he just playing you? Was he just using every skill he was taught on you and this was the spy you had heard many stories about?
Your name rolls off his tongue in a whisper that pulls you from your rambling mind, and before he can speak, a deep voice calls for him. The both of you turn your heads, but Cassian is the one who takes a full step away from you.
Just like that, his walls were back up.
“Captain Andor,” the man you assumed to be General Draven walks up, glancing between the both of you. You avert your gaze, looking down at the floor to give them a sense of privacy.
“General.” Cassian salutes— ever the perfect soldier.
“We’re going to need your report on the incident right now, we’ll be meeting in the mission briefing room.”
“Yes, General.”
He soon walks off the way he came, and you are left once again in the midst of an awkward silence with Cassian, as if what happened moments ago didn’t happen. He stares down at you, regret littered upon his face— like he is torn.
Please don’t go.
“I, Uh…” he breathes out, not quite sure what to say. But that alone was enough for you to dismiss it. “Nova—“
“It’s fine,” you shake your head, avoiding his gaze. “You should… you should go. It’s important stuff…”
He says your name softly and steps towards you again, but you squeeze your eyes shut and close in on yourself.
“I have to go to the medbay, anyways.”
Cassian sighs, and takes a moment before he whispers an ‘okay’. You feel him brush his fingers against the back of your hand before opening your eyes.
Don’t cry, for the love of stars, don’t you dare cry.
“When I’m finished, I’ll come find you. We can… we’ll talk, okay?”
You can only manage a small nod and force a smile— hoping it’s convincing enough that you are okay. While he stares at you, obviously not convinced, the good soldier in him follows his orders and turns to leave.
All you want to do is scream. And shout. You want to hit the wall or kick the metal crates next to you. You want to cry.
But you don’t.
Instead, all you do is stand in place, watching Cassian round the corner to leave you behind. The kiss plays over and over in your mind, like a broken hologram you needed to fix just to skip over the next part as a way to get over the sorrowful ache in your chest.
You shouldn’t have expected anything less. Part of you debates running after him, but you can’t think clearly enough to decide what action you would take. Would you have kissed him again? Or would you just go straight to demanding an explanation from him and possibly end up starting another argument?
Despite everything running through your mind— despite what your heart was telling you to do— the only thing you could physically do in that moment was let your legs with each shaky step lead you to find Melshi.
As you look through the hangar, you’re too preoccupied to notice the tall droid standing in your path. You manage to glance up just before running into it, and you look up to see the familiar reprogrammed Imperial droid.
“Hello, Nova.”
No matter how many times you insisted he call you by your real name, K2S-O still used the same name Cassian would. Cassian would bring him along for visits every now and then, and you got on well. You always teased that Kay liked you more than Cassian did.
“Oh, hi Kay.”
“Are you looking for Cassian? He’s meeting—“
“No, no.” You shake your head. “I’m… I was just with him, so… I was looking for the medbay.”
“Well, it’s in the opposite direction. And you seem to be in a hurry to leave. Would you like for me to get the Captain?”
“No, Kay,” you sigh. “Just… don’t tell him you saw me, okay? Please?”
“You seem to be in distress.”
A dry chuckle escapes you, and you close your eyes. “Just… please, if he asks about me just say you didn’t see me.”
“I see. I will tell him exactly that.”
You hear heavy footsteps walk away from you and when you look back up, you see that Kay is gone. Part of you feels guilty for having Kay lie to Cassian for you— you know how loyal the droid is to him. But you just needed to leave, to clear your head.
As soon as you spot Melshi, you take the one chance that you can get to do exactly that.
++++++
It would have been a lie to say that you were handling things well since you’ve been back home. Since you didn’t get the proper medical help back on Yavin IV, you had to stop by the nearest medic to get checked out. After a few bacta patches were wrapped around you and a lovely health stim was injected into you, you thought you would be good to go.
If only the trip to the medic was able to help the rest of you heal.
Sleep was rough. There were some nights you had made it through, but others you were lucky to even get through one or two hours. If you weren’t tossing and turning all night from the pain in your ribs, there were images of Terek flashing behind your eyes— you could practically feel the knife against your throat each time.
And then of course there was Cassian and the kiss. You wondered if you made the right decision, leaving without telling him. He deserved that at least… right? Did he even bother looking for you? Even if he did… it was already too late.
You tried not to think about the kiss often, but it was hard to do so since it was something you had truly longed for. The warmth of his lips against yours and the way that his hands felt as they held your cheeks… it was everything you had imagined.
A few shouts between a shopkeeper and a customer bring you back to the present, and you quickly hand over a few credits before gathering your small bag of fruit and making your way home. Now wasn’t the time to think about that.
Pushing past various individuals alike, you keep your head down as you continue back down the path to the inn. You really needed to find a way off this small moon— maybe finding a small job to help get you some extra credits or making yourself worthy of becoming a crew member on a ship would be the best ways to go about it. Either way, a fresh start might do you some good.
As you turn around a corner to an alleyway, an eerie feeling slithers its way up your back. Was someone following you? Did someone from Terek’s group survive and track you down? With your heart pounding, you try casting a look over your shoulder, but all you saw was a stray tooka cat running through the metal trash bins. Shaking your head, you quickly turn on your heel and practically run back to the inn.
It’s nothing, it’s nothing. No one is following you, all of Terek’s men are dead.
It runs through your mind like a mantra spoken by the Guardians of the Whills— you knew it was impossible for any of Terek’s men to survive the raid from the Rebellion and if they had, it was impossible for them to know where you were.
Practically out of breath, you finally make it to the inn, and rush straight for your room. You make sure to lock the door and turn the lights on, feeling a little more relieved when you do so until you hear someone take a step behind you.
“You left.”
The bag you were carrying slips from your hand at the sound of his voice, and you listen as the shurra fruit you purchased tumbles along the floor. You don’t even bother with the fruit as Cassian walks out from the corner of the room, his eyes never straying away from you.
He’s healed well, you note as he stops in front of you. His bruises shrunk down with a bit of yellowing around the edges, and the cuts that once littered his cheek and lips were nonexistent.
You were too focused on looking over him that you didn’t take into account what he was doing here. It had been a few weeks since the incident, and you figured that he was going to stay focused on Alliance stuff. Were you happy that he was here?
Deep down, yes.
Although, the expression on your face probably told him otherwise.
“Cassian…” Is all that you can manage to say as he reaches down to pick up the fruit, handing them to you. You try ignoring the way his fingers linger against yours as he places them in your hands, taking his time to pull away.
“You left,” he says again— dark eyes boring into yours. “I went back and looked everywhere for you. Twice.”
“I…”
You hated that you couldn’t find the words to explain. Absolutely hated it. The longer you stared at him, the longer you began to regret the decision you had made. Maybe you shouldn’t have left, but you did.
“When I finally told Kay, he said you asked him not to tell me that you left.”
That damn droid, you think, although you don’t really blame him. He was loyal to Cassian.
Cassian waits for you to answer, but you still can’t. Instead, you move to the small table you frequently ate your meals at to set the fruit down. Footsteps come up behind you, but you don’t turn to face him.
“Why did you leave?” He asks in a whisper you barely catch. “I told you that I would come back so we could talk about what happened. I meant that.”
Talk about what happened. Closing your eyes, you can easily picture Cassian grabbing your face and pressing his lips to yours. It makes your heart race in the most wonderful way possible, even though at the time you were just so confused and still in shock from the events before. You still were. You didn’t know why he had kissed you or what his reasoning was— you kept telling yourself that it wasn’t what you hoped it to be, and that you were just over analyzing.
Another soft step is taken towards you, and you can feel Cassian closer than ever.
“...Nova—“
“Why did you do that?” It comes out too quick before you could stop yourself. “Why did you kiss me?”
It takes everything in your power not to face Cassian— you didn’t want him to see you in this vulnerable state you were in. Instead, you wait.
You wait, and you wait until he finally speaks.
“...Because I didn’t know how else to tell you how I feel about you,” he mutters. “When it comes to… words, I… it’s hard for me to express myself by using my words. You know that.”
He’s right. For as long as you’ve known Cassian, he was more of a physical person— he relied on action rather than words. So when you finally turn to face him, it’s there that you realize just how vulnerable he is in this moment. His gaze is fixed on yours, but you know his mind is racing trying to choose what he should say next.
“So when I kissed you… I was hoping that— well, I just hoped it would show you how I truly feel. But me leaving right after… I shouldn’t have done that. I regretted it the moment I took that first step because I should have stayed and told you that…”
When he tries to continue, you watch his mouth open and close until he groans, running his hand down his face in frustration. He lets out a breath, before looking back at you, and taking a step towards you until his chest is just centimeters away from yours.
He leans close to you, and gods, when he whispers that familiar phrase you can only stay frozen in place. You stare up at him— waiting for him to speak again.
“...You’ve always asked me what it meant, and I told you I would tell you someday.” He swallows. “It’s because I was terrified then, but now…”
Cassian’s fingers brush against your hand, the simple touch sending your heart in a flurry of beats.
“You mean everything to me. You appeared in my life so suddenly like… like a sudden bright light— one that I have dreaded losing sight of.” He grabs your hand. “When they were taking me away, I thought that was going to be the last time I saw you. It was like the light was dimming with every step they took but then…”
He looks down, bringing your hand up to his lips as he holds it tightly.
“I wanted to tell you right then and there how I truly feel about you. But I just…”
You place your hand on his cheek, lifting his gaze. His eyes meet yours without flinching, a sparkle of intensity between you both.
“Tell me,” you breathe out in a mere whisper.
You wonder if Cassian can hear the heart races due to how silent it is now and how close he is. If you were just a few centimeters closer…
“I love you. I’ve always loved you, stars, Nova. You’re my everything. You’ve always been.” He admits. “That’s what I’ve been telling you from the first moment you asked what I meant. Every time you asked me what I was saying… that was it. I was telling you that I love you.”
And that was all you needed to hear.
Those words— finally hearing what he has struggled to say and what you weren’t sure to be true before— work their way through your mind over and over on a loop. In an instant, you’re the one who closes the small space between you as you press your lips against his in a desperate, long awaited kiss. Cassian wraps his arms around your waist, pulling you even closer as he returns the kiss.
Everything in that moment is all you’ve ever dreamt of— as if fate was in play here. Many nights spent fantasizing about this among other things were just that, fantasies, but Cassian was here and just as real as ever.
When Cassian’s fingers dig into your waist, you let out a hiss, and he quickly pulls back. He watches as you press a hand to your side, scared as if he was the one who hurt you.
“Sorry—“
“I’m okay, still a little tender,” you reassure, stepping closer to him. “I’m fine, Cassian.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am,” you nod, before grabbing his jacket and pulling him back to kiss you.
He still seemed hesitant to grab you, but when you place his hands on your waist he seems to relent. What he doesn’t do is hold back when kissing you, and you were grateful for that. You wanted him— all of him in that moment.
Sliding his jacket off, you let him lead you back towards the bed. His fingers tease your skin at the hem of your shirt, before he breaks the kiss to pull it over your head completely. His eyes slowly trail down along your body, and he freezes as he sees the small cuts and bruises.
His expression changes, and you press the palm of your hand against his cheek.
“Are you sure this is okay?” He asks, genuine concern laced in his eyes. “I know you… went through something horrible—“
“We both did, Cassian,” you brush your thumb along his skin. “I don’t want to stop. I want you… I want to feel you.”
Cassian’s eyes study you, searching for any hint of hesitation or even fear probably. In return, you give him a small smile, and you watch as the gaze in his eyes softens. He kisses you, a deep and passionate notion, and you each fumble with the rest of your clothes.
He lies you down, hovering over you as he moves between your legs. He trails feather-light kisses along every inch of your skin, as if trying not to miss any spots. He leads a path from your collarbone, between the valley of your breasts until he moves over. He kisses your right mound, carefully kissing and flicking his tongue over your nipple while he caresses the other one with his hand. Soon, he switches over, doing the exact same thing.
You’re sure that he can feel the way your heart beats, how it races with each kiss, nibble, and lick he gives you. A quiet hum escapes you, and you glance down as you feel Cassian continue his course. He takes careful measure to kiss every bruise and cut that litters your skin along your torso, a silent apology almost.
Arousal pools between your legs with every single touch Cassian makes— you’re sure to be dripping by the end. Cassian moves down lower, his lips brushing against your thighs as he inches closer to your aching sex.
“You smell so sweet,” his voice comes out in a deep whisper. “Always wondered what you tasted like. Had so many dreams about making you come with my mouth.”
His fingers brush against your wet pussy lips, gathering the slick as he moves up and gently circles your sensitive clit. By this time, you’re already lost. Your mind is left in a daze; the touches, kisses, and the words coming from Cassian hits you hard each time. He had dreams about you—like you did him— but hearing him saying this out loud only turned you on even more.
He looks up, staring deep into your eyes.’”Can I...“
When you feel Cassian begin to push your thighs further apart, you sit up, and pull him back up. Confusion covers his face and you kiss him deeply. While the thought of Cassian delving between your thighs and making you come just from his mouth sounds exquisite, you simply want to feel him inside you already. When you tell him just that, he nods, and presses his lips to yours as you lie back down.
His hard cock brushes against the inside of your thigh, and fuck you are just aching for him. He nestles between your thighs, breaking the kiss to stare down at you.
“Are you—“
“Don’t you dare stop, Cassian Andor.”
Something flashes in his eyes, whether it be amusement or adoration, it’s gone before he leans down to take your lips with his. Cassian grabs one of your hands and presses it next to your head, entwining his fingers with yours, and when he pushes inside of you, you see stars.
No, you see the entire galaxy.
You and Cassian seem to inhale sharply at the same time, and he squeezes your hand tightly. He feels perfect, as if you were both made for each other. And when he starts moving, it’s even better than you’ve imagined.
Sure, you were no stranger to sharing a bed with someone, but it was nothing like this. It wasn’t the face of whatever current partner you were taking that flashed through your mind, but it was always Cassian’s. For so long, you had wondered what it would feel like to have Cassian inside you— to feel his hands caress every inch of your body as you both bring each other to the brink of ecstasy.
You no longer had to wonder, because every thrust from Cassian was everything. This wasn’t just sex with Cassian, this was making love, and by the gods you never wanted to forget this moment. It’s slow, but hard— like he is trying to make sure to hit every spot inside of you. His fingers dig into your hip, but the pleasure you’re receiving erases any sense of pain you felt from your bruises.
When you throw your head back against the pillow, Cassian is quick to kiss your pulse— a moan escapes you as he begins flicking his tongue and sucking your skin. You try rolling your hips with his, meeting each thrust as they increase with pace. He never once releases his grip on your hand, instead presses it deeper into the mattress while the other hand lifts your leg around his waist.
The new angle exposes more of you, and as his cock hits that spot inside of you, you’re left begging as you writhe underneath him.
“Kriff, Cassian—“ you’re cut off with a gasp. “Don’t… don’t stop.”
When he speaks, it’s in whispers of his language that you barely catch. Only… when you come out of your daze to listen to what he says, your chest bursts with a warmth you haven’t felt in so long as you recognize
I love you.
I love you.
You’re my everything.
I love you.
And stars, the way he says your name each time is like music to your ears— a symphony of moans which would soon reach that wonderful climax.
Your free hand cups the back of his head, fingers tangling in his hair gently as you pull him down to kiss you, muttering your love for him as well. Cassian returns the fervent kiss, as he snaps his hips hard into yours over and over again. You’re so close, you can feel your orgasm practically begging to be released with every moan of his name that catches in the back of your throat.
When it finally hits you, you’re left in such a euphoric daze that the only thing you remember is the way Cassian clutches on to your hand and how he rides you through it. White lights soon flash behind your eyelids, and you can only hold tight onto Cassian. You barely catch the way he kisses your neck or how he urges you to come earnestly through short breaths. With the way your cunt squeezes around him, Cassian soon follows with his seed pouring into you.
Small whines as Cassian loses himself are heard, and as you fall slack into the mattress, you feel Cassian bury his face in your neck. He slowly rocks into you, sending jolts of small pleasure through your body, until he finally comes to a stop. Neither of you move right away, instead bask in the way your breaths sync together.
When you do move, Cassian is the first to do so, but only to kiss you lightly along your neck. You hum, tilting your head back until Cassian is now looking down at you. So many words, so many things to say to you are probably running through his mind right now.
He brushes his thumb along your cheek, staying silent as he takes all of you in. He leans down, kissing you over and over again as if this was the last time he was going to be able to do so.
He only stops when you pull away, and even still he has to touch some part of you to know that this is real. When you push back his hair, he relaxes.
“...Cassian?”
“Hm? Are you okay? Am I hurting you?”
“No,” you shake your head, smiling. “I just…”
“What is it, love?”
Love. That’s what all this— what everything has been between you both. Unspoken, but there. Now that it’s said aloud, you never want to stop hearing it, or saying it for the matter.
“I love you.”
When Cassian smiles— a wonderful sight— you truly feel whole from the way he gently touches you and the soft response of his voice.
“I love you, too. My Nova.”

Coast To Coast
part iv
(Takes place just before Sweater Weather part xiii’s trip to Florida...and everything else.)
Gryffindor, 2019
Finn knew that it was natural, to be homesick. He remembered being homesick, calling his brother before he had any real friends on the team, just to have another, familiar voice to listen to while he heated up some take-out leftovers in the microwave. But it was different, watching Leo go through it.
“It’s just the cold,” Leo always said with a little shrug, gathering his sweatshirt in his hands, but Finn knew that wasn’t just it. They were about three months into the season, right when the newness had started to ware off for him, too, and Finn could tell that, even if Leo was enjoying himself, he got down at night. He’d go out onto their balcony, bundled to all hell despite it being what Finn considered a relatively mild 50 degrees, as if to recreate some heat, and look up.
Finn usually sat inside, but tonight he followed him.
“Big city, huh?” he said, handing Leo a cup of hot chocolate. At Leo’s suspicious look, he laughed. “I can make this! My brother taught me when I was little.”
“Why do I feel like you had this for dinner sometimes before I came along to cook for you,” Leo smiled into the mug, and took a sip. “Hm. Alright, it’s good.”
“Damn,” Finn said, leaning against the railing, “Nut approved. Knapproved.”
Leo winced, murmuring a, “Please no,” but he laughed anyway and took another sip.
The sound of the city below them seemed far away just then. The lights reflected up and into Leo’s blond hair, flashing red and blue across his face. Finn could only just make out the small patch that was streaked with gray in the dim light. Not for the first time, Finn wanted to reach out and brush his fingers through it.
“Can’t see the stars here,” Leo said suddenly. He glanced down at the lights below them, then back up to the sky. “Not like you can at home.”
Finn looked up. “Guess I never thought about it. Can’t see them in New York really.”
Leo didn’t reply, and Finn looked over at him. His brows were drawn together and he was clutching his cup close to his chest.
“I used to have those those little stars, though,” Finn said quickly. Suddenly, he would do anything to get rid of the hurt etched on Leo’s face. “You know, the ones you stick on the ceiling that glow in the dark? Had those when I was a kid.”
That drew a small smile from Leo, and the knot growing in Finn’s chest loosened a little. “Yeah?”
Finn moved closer to him. Even upset, Leo radiated a stable sort of force that Finn felt at home in.
“Yeah,” Finn said softly. “We could get those. In your room, I mean. Or anywhere. Or, like, string lights. Live your best college life and get string lights. I swear to God, there were more string lights in me and Tremz’s frat house than there were, like, dishes. People. One night stands. Those are…sort of star-like.”
Finn watched Leo nod slowly, eyes still on the sky. He blinked a few more times, as if considering the stars, and then turned to Finn.
“I’d like that, Harzy.”
The knot loosened further, and Finn smiled, putting a hand to Leo’s shoulder over his sweatshirt. “We’ll get them tomorrow. After practice.”
“Bringing the stars to me, eh?”
“I’d get you some real ones if I could,” Finn said immediately, and then clamped his mouth shut. That sounded too—too close to what was really happening inside of him.
Leo looked at him, too, eyebrows drawn together.
“What?”
“Like—” Finn turned to face forward, eyes flicking over the city. “Like real stars? Like—gas. But in a safe way.”
Leo stared at him for another second, and then laughed, nose scrunching. “Safe gaseous stars, huh?”
“Yeah,” Finn drummed his fingers against his cup. “I mean, supernovas are pretty, too.”
“You’re not wrong,” Leo leaned against the railing, staring down.
Finn hesitate only a second, watching the tense curve of Leo’s shoulders rise as he took a large breath, and then leaned beside him, shoulder to shoulder.
“Want to talk about it?” Finn said quietly.
Leo raised a shoulder. “Just hard sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I love it here. Gryffindor, the Lions, living with you. I don’t know what I would be doing right now if I was just in some hotel room by myself.”
Finn laughed. “Yeah, that’s not a fun part of this. I’m glad I could help you skip that. I…” Finn shrugged. “I don’t know what I’d be doing all alone, either.”
Leo was silent, brows scrunched like he was thinking about something, trying to figure something out. Finn watched carefully, using the view of the city as an excuse. Through the reflecting lights, he noticed the fine strands of grayish hair that mingled with the blond, right at the front of Leo’s forehead again.
“You hit your head?” Finn asked before he could stop himself.
Leo looked at him. “What?”
“Here,” Finn reached up and brushed his fingers over the hair near one temple. It was soft, like he had thought it would be.
“Oh,” Leo nodded minutely. “I fell on our boat when I was five. It was pretty bad.”
“You have a boat?” Finn said. He was close enough to feel Leo’s soft breathing now. He hadn’t known when they had moved, or who had moved first, but Leo’s eyes were flicking between Finn’s eyes and his mouth, drawing Finn’s to do the same.
“Yeah,” Leo whispered.
Finn’s mouth felt dry. “Can I come on your boat?”
“Yeah,” Leo smiled a little, but his eyes were serious, curious. “Finn…”
“Yeah?” Finn whispered back.
He watched Leo swallow, wetting his lips as he chose his words. “Are,” he began. “Are you going to kiss me?”
Even as he said it, Leo ducked down a little, like he couldn’t help it, and their lips brushed. It sent a strange mixture of emotions through Finn. Guilt and want turned into confusion, which was pushed away by Leo’s blue, comforting eyes, reflecting brightly in the dark.
“Can I?” Finn asked, and even then, Leo’s hand was curling around the back of his neck.
“Yes,” Leo managed to breathe out before their mouths were pressing together, Finn’s heart leaping. Leo kissed soundly, like each one of his movements had a purpose.
Finn couldn’t help but think of Logan, who kissed with a burning fever. The two mingled together in his brain for a moment, but the more Leo kissed him, the more he felt a calm wash over him. It was nothing like he’d ever felt before, and it was something Finn only associated with Leo. If Logan was a hurricane, keeping him close, Leo was a steadily rocking boat, lulling him and pulling him like a tide.
Finn craved—both.
Fuck.
How does a hurricane meet a tide, and what did that make him?
Finn made a noise when Leo’s other hand pressed around his back, making Leo gasp in return. Finn pressed his free hand to Leo’s chilly cheek, and licked into his mouth, letting himself be pressed against the railing by Leo’s lean body. He could smell the chocolate rising with the steam from their cups, and he didn’t think he’d ever smell that scent the same way again. Chocolate, once meaning snow and skating, meant Leo now. The same way that rum and sugarcane meant Logan.
“Finn—” Leo gasped. “Finn.”
“Is this a lot?” Even as he said it, they pressed together for a last kiss. “Sorry, fuck.”
“No, no, this is amazing,” Leo laughed, running a hand through his hair. “Fuck me, I’m kissing Finn O’Hara, but…”
Finn’s stomach flipped. “But?”
“Logan,” Leo said simply.
Finn’s eyes widened. “You like Logan?”
Leo raised an eyebrow, confused. “You like Logan.”
“Oh.”
Leo blinked at him. “Right?”
“I…It’s more—it’s…more complicated than that. Hang on, how the fuck?”
“What?”
“How the fuck did you know?”
“You…I don’t know I just,” Leo shrugged, setting his drink on the railing. “Maybe it’s because I’m gay, too, I see the way you look at each other.”
“I’m not gay,” Finn said.
Leo looked at his mouth, still red from making out.
“No, no,” Finn laughed. “I mean like—you’re hot, but June’s hot. Kasey’s hot, and Natalie’s hot…everyone’s really hot.”
Leo’s eyes widened. “June.”
“No, no, no,” Finn shook his head. “That’s different.”
“What?”
Finn groaned, rubbing a hand over his eyes. He set his drink beside Leo’s, turning to face the city for a moment, and then looked at Leo again. “June’s not my girlfriend.”
Leo shook his head slowly. “Um. Okay, we’ll come back to that later but, you might want to let some people know that. Like Logan. Like—”
Leo swallowed. Like me. He couldn’t help but feel like a weight had been lifted and placed on his chest at the same time. Finn kissed him. Finn wanted him? He didn’t know.
“I know, that’s why I’m stupid.”
Leo took a step back, out of Finn’s reach. “Why did you kiss me?”
Finn’s cheeks flushed in the darkness. “It’s—complicated.”
Leo stared at Finn, his blue eyes confused and a little guarded now that they were talking rather than kissing.
“This is a lot of information,” Leo said slowly, and Finn nearly whined.
He clutched at his chest. “Yeah, well it’s a hell of a lot of feelings, too.” He paused, staring at Leo. “I don’t know what’s going on. My brain’s a lot. So is my—” Finn blinked, and suddenly his eyes were shining, voice cracking. “So is my heart. Leo, I—”
Leo looked at Finn. Finn reached out, and then moved to pulled his hands back to his chest.
But Leo caught them. “Just talk to me, Harzy.”
Finn’s hands squeezed his own, a surprised little pulse. “Logan never wants to talk about it.”
Leo’s heart pounded as he held Finn’s hands in his own. “If he’s scared…of course he doesn’t.”
Finn nodded and then looked down, eyes searching. “In…in college, we sort of…yeah.”
“Are either of you out to anyone?”
“I’m not,” Finn sighed. “Well, you two. I don’t think Logan is either.”
“You don’t know?”
“Like I said,” Finn said. “We don’t talk about this stuff.”
Leo nodded slowly. “Well…yeah, then all he’s got is the scary stuff, right? Coming out? Scary. Talking about it from one NHL player to another? Scary as fuck.”
“But you can talk about it.”
Leo smiled, small and endearing. “My family knows.”
Finn stared up at him. “How did you know they’d…”
“I didn’t,” Leo shook his head. “Even when they had the best fucking reaction in the world I still didn’t believe it. But they proved it to me, you know?” Leo glanced at his bracelet, and Finn’s eyes followed. “And suddenly it didn’t matter so much that I would have to hide going into the League. I felt like I could make it happen one day, coming out, even if it isn’t while I’m an eighteen year old rookie,” Leo’s eyes were serious and he squeezed Finn’s hands. “My point is…the people who will be horrible…they’re one sort of demon when you’re alone. It’s a different story when you know, like, sure fucking fact know, that people love you.”
“Lo…” Finn nodded slowly. “Lo doesn’t know?”
Leo shook his head. “Harzy…you don’t know, either.”
“Me?” Finn said. “I—I mean, I…” Finn cleared his throat. “I want to talk about it.”
“And you haven’t been able to,” Leo took a step closer, hand on Finn’s shoulder. “And—you know, I understand if…if you’re just frustrated with Logan and…” Leo took a breath, heart squeezing painfully. “Yeah, like, Harzy, I’m always here to talk to.”
Leo could be an outlet for Finn. He could do that.
Finn looked down at Leo’s hands cradling his. “Logan and I, there are years there. We’ve been skating around each other for…God. Knutty,” Finn looked up at him. “I’ve been in love with Logan for seven fucking years. I thought something was wrong with me when I started…” Finn just looked at Leo, eyes pleading, as if needing him to understand something.
Leo nodded silently, aching. That was history. That was history that had bones, history that had gears that ran one way and one way only. Finn’s it’s complicated kiss to Leo was nothing more than Finn being fed up. Leo didn’t blame him. Everyone needed someone.
“Right,” Leo managed. “Have you told him that? That you love him?”
Finn shook his head. “Not—Fuck, only barely and when we were fighting about it.”
“You need to tell people you want them, Harz, if you want to be with them.”
Finn chewed on his bottom lip. “Yeah, I do. Yeah. You’re right.”
Leo wanted to pull away then. This was exactly what he had always been afraid of, only worse. He didn’t just like a teammate, he liked two teammates who liked each other. Not him.
“Well, maybe while we’re in Florida or something, huh?” Leo tried to laugh and stepped back. He wanted to go inside. He wanted to close the door of his room. He could make an excuse, that he had to pack for the roadie to Florida tomorrow. Maybe cry for a little and then go to sleep. Maybe call his mom, just let it out.
He sighed, thinking about that call. Hi mama, yeah, remember my home and roadie roommates? Well, I really like them. They love each other. I did exactly what I said I wouldn’t do. Doubled. Isn’t that fantastic?
“It’s cold,” Leo rasped out, ducking away from Finn. “We should go inside.”
“Leo—”
“I’ll take our cups in,” Leo snatched the mugs from the railing, before disappearing through the sliding glass door.
Leo dumped them in the skin, hearing Finn walk carefully into the house behind him and close the door. He watched what was left of the dark chocolate seep down the drain for a moment, and then turned around. Finn was staring at him with a funny expression on his face. Leo, with the tears threatening in his throat, couldn’t stick around to figure it out.
“Night, Harz,” he said, and turned away. “Thanks for the stars.”
Leo’s bedroom felt chilly as he closed the door. He sat on his bed and pressed his elbows to his knees.
He had wanted to help his friend. That’s all this had to be. He let out a long breath, cheeks blowing out as his eyes burned. Blinking hurriedly, he picked up his phone. He pushed his hair back from his forehead and found his mom’s contact. He could be quiet. Finn wouldn’t listen, Finn wasn’t nosey like that—
There was a knock on his door and Leo froze, thumb still hovering over the call button, tears in his eyes. He felt seconds away from breaking down, and even the thought of speaking right now made him choke up with tears.
“Um,” his voice wavered and he let out a shaking breath. Fuck. “Just a sec.”
“Nut?” Finn’s voice came through the door.
“Yeah, hold on,” Leo wiped his face with the hem of his sweatshirt and sniffed. He looked at the mirror on his way to the door, but what was he suppose to do about his red eyes? He turned off his overhead light and flicked on his dimmer bedside one instead. He opened the door.
“Hi,” Leo said, and cleared his throat.
Finn walked right in and sat on the edge of his bed. He looked possibly more freaked out than he had before.
“Can you—sit?” Finn asked, looking at him carefully.
Leo wiped a hand over his nose in a way that he hoped wasn’t obvious and sat beside Finn, trying to ignore the way his heart pulled towards him.
“What’s up,” Leo said softly.
Finn didn’t speak for a few moments. He was rubbing his hands against the thighs of his sweatpants, and chewing on his lower lip.
“You said—” he began, and then laced his fingers, looking down at them. “I should tell the person I like, that I like them…”
Leo nodded. He tried to focus on anything but the heat radiating off of Finn through his sweatshirt.
“What if…” Leo heard Finn swallow before continuing. “What if it’s…persons. What if I like…persons?”
A sort of chill ran through Leo’s body, goosebumps raising on his neck. He could have shivered, if not for Finn.
Finn turned towards him. “Knutty.”
Leo didn’t look. He couldn’t look. He kept his eyes on the ground, eyebrows drawing together in attempt to fight off his suddenly growing hopes.
“Leo,” Finn said again, and then his hand was on Leo’s cheek, turning his face towards him. “Leo, do you understand?”
Leo looked at him, barely daring to breathe.
“Is that even allowed?” Finn sucked in a breath. “Is that horrible of me?”
Leo felt shaky. “Me?” he whispered.
Finn nodded hurriedly, hand moving to the back of Leo’s neck. “You.”
“Me and Logan?”
“Yes,” Finn whispered again, and then his hands dropped away. “God, that’s so…fuck, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, what the fuck do I expect you to do with that?”
“Yes,” Leo said. The word felt like it tore from his lungs, and Finn looked up. They stared at each other.
“What?” Finn said.
“I—yes.”
“You mean…Logan? You like Logan?”
Leo couldn’t help but laugh at the question, even if it was choked off. He pressed his thumb and forefinger to his eyes briefly before nodding. He thought of Logan, asleep in the bed beside his on the road, permanent crease between his brows. He thought of his bright smile, rare lately, and the way he leaned into Leo, fitting into his body so easily on nights out when he’d had too much to drink. He thought of that strange, almost kiss, not three nights ago. He thought of watching Logan and Finn, sometimes from afar, sometimes from just across the table. He thought of the confusion that came with being pulled in two directions at the exact same time.
“Yes,” he said. “Fuck, I thought I was just…I felt so stupid. I told myself I wouldn’t get attached to any teammates ever. It would just be too hard. I knew it was hard, I’ve done it, and I never wanted to feel like that again.”
“Nut…” Finn said softly.
“But then you and Logan just show up and…Jesus, Harzy,” Leo shook his head. “What am I suppose to do?”
Finn’s eyes were wide, and then he let out a laugh. “What? Knutty, are you fucking kidding me?”
Leo laughed, too, shaking his head, tears back in his eyes.
“Oh my god, Nut,” Finn breathed, and then he had Leo’s face between his hands. “Oh my god…”
Finn’s kiss was bruising, and Leo held on tight for it, feeling every inch of tension uncoil from his shoulders.
FinnFinnFinnFinnFinn—
And Logan. Logan, hurting and not with them. Leo wanted him there.
“What if he says no?” Finn said suddenly. “Lo always said—he always said he never wanted to hide.”
Finn’s nervousness made Leo jumpy all over again. Now that they’d said it aloud, he ached for them. Both of them.
“You’ve seen him lately,” Finn said. “One second it’s like it has always been and the next…he can’t even look at me.”
“June,” Leo reminded Finn with a raised eyebrow, and Finn groaned, forehead against Leo’s shoulder.
“Fuck me,” Finn sighed. “How do I even begin to explain it to him, he’s going to murder me. In French.”
Leo laughed softly, and then, realizing that he could, wrapped an arm around Finn and pressed a lingering kiss to his forehead. Finn practically melted into it, and so Leo did it again, this time against his temple, then again on his cheek. Finn made a little noise that Leo swore was going to turn his heart inside out. He laughed as Finn all but burrowed against his chest, basically forcing himself into Leo’s lap. Leo pet a hand through his hair, Finn’s head resting in the crook of one of his elbows, the rest of him splayed the wrong way on the bed, feet by Leo’s pillows.
“Sweetheart,” Leo whispered before he realized, but he’d do it again to see the way Finn practically swooned. Finn reached a hand up, tracing Leo’s jaw lightly.
“I see the way he looks at you,” Finn said softly, fingers brushing Leo’s mouth. “Broke my fucking heart for a while. At least until—until I started looking at you that way, too. Fuck me, I didn’t understand it at all. Who does this? Who wants two people at once?”
Leo raised a shoulder. “We do. Who cares about the rest?”
Finn stared up at him. “We—we can do this? We can be together.”
Leo nodded, smiling. “We can.”
“I just—We need to talk to him.”
“I think you should talk first,” Leo said, leaning into Finn’s touch. “Like you said. You two have a lot of history. That means a lot of conversation. And…that first part doesn’t really involve me.”
Finn chewed on the inside of his cheek. “He could still say no.”
“Well…I know he loves you, and…and I also know he very nearly kissed me the other night.”
Finn’s eyes widened. “Oh, man. Logan is a specialist in almost kissing. Fuck.”
Leo laughed and ducked for a kiss of his own. “I thought it was just you two taking your frustration out on someone else. But…maybe not.”
“Maybe not? Nut, come on.”
“You gotta explain that you don’t have a girlfriend—I’d also like an explanation by the way, like, I really like June, but she also sort of stomped on my heart and dick.”
A sly smile curled at one corner of Finn’s mouth. “Dick, huh?”
Leo looked away, grinning. “You sure are sweet, Harzy. Doesn’t help that I get to see you swinging around the locker room every day while you strut around naked.”
Finn sat up a little, hand curling around the back of Leo’s neck. “Oh yeah? Says the guy with the mile long fucking legs. Nut. Come on. How am I suppose to think away a hard-on while staring at those things?”
Leo snorted. “I thought I was an octopus.”
“You are,” Finn whispered, and then pulled Leo down and kissed him, then laughed into his mouth, letting his head fall back against Leo’s thighs and staring up at him. “Well, this is not what I expected when I brought you hot chocolate.”
“What, you don’t ask someone out every time you bring them a Starbucks or something?”
“Knowing me, you’d think I might,” Finn reached for Leo’s hand, holding it against his chest. “But no, that’s just you.”
“And Logan,” Leo smiled as Finn did. “Maybe you should bring him a coffee, or something.”
“You mean a sickly sweet—whatever he drinks. It’s not fucking coffee, that’s all I know.”
Leo pushed his hand through Finn’s dark red hair. “Harz, I hope this…I really want this.”
Finn closed his eyes for a moment, leaning into Leo’s touch, before he was sitting up suddenly. Leo laughed as Finn pushed him back against the bed, thighs on either side of Leo’s hips. Finn kissed him, hands on his chest, and Leo sunk into it.
“Me too,” Finn mumbled against his mouth. He trailed his mouth down to Leo’s jaw, lips soft. “Imagine if he was here.”
Leo couldn’t help the sigh, breathy and needy, that escaped as he fisted the back of Finn’s sweatshirt.
Finn pressed his hand to the other side of Leo’s neck, rubbing his thumb over the tendon softly. “There’s more of you to be kissed, huh?”
The thought of both Finn and Logan, kissing him, touching him—
He felt Finn laugh into his mouth as he pressed their hips together against Leo’s stiffening cock. “Hi, there.”
Leo groaned. “It’s been like— forever, okay? Forever. Once the NHL was interested I didn’t wanna risk—” Finn pushed down against him then, making Leo’s mouth drop open. “And you’re Finn O’Hara and you’re kissing my neck…”
Finn sucked gently on Leo’s throat. “Maybe we should end that forever.”
Leo let out a laugh that was half moan. Leo could feel Finn getting hard, too, and he was suddenly dizzy with him.
“Aw, Knutty,” Finn sounded a little breathless. “I like you turned on. That’s something I haven’t seen before.”
Leo’s cheeks were hot. “Yeah?”
Finn’s smile was soft. “Hey, kiss me again.”
Leo leaned up and tugged gently on Finn’s bottom lip with his teeth, watching his eyes widen with their noses brushing.
“Leo,” Finn’s voice was high with surprise and pleased sounding, muffled by Leo’s mouth.
Leo kissed him once, then rested his head back on the bed. “I…do you…” he glanced down at their hips where he could see the outlines of their cocks against their sweatpants.
Finn, poised on top of Leo, swallowed. “I’ve never…I mean, twice with Lo, but it was always—you know. Hands only. Kissing. Either we didn’t talk about it, or…I left for Gryffindor after the second time. It was,” Finn looked down at his hands, pressing a little on Leo’s chest. “I don’t know, we never even really took our clothes off and we were both sort of crying…”
Leo pressed up onto his elbows. “Finn…”
“I want to,” Finn said, looking at Leo with a small smile. “I want us to show him that it doesn’t have to be rushed and—silent.” Finn licked his lips, holding the one that had been between Leo’s teeth in his mouth for a moment, and then leaned forward, pushing Leo back down again and planting his hands on either side of his head. “Show me.”
A shiver went up Leo’s spine. He nodded, running his hands up and under Finn’s sweatshirt, palms smooth over the warm skin of his back.
“I am sort of half off the bed here,” Leo smiled.
“Huh?” Finn glanced behind him, at Leo’s legs still over the bed from when they had been sitting side by side. “Oh shit.”
Finn snorted as he scrambled up, landing with his back against Leo’s pillows. Leo stood, and looked. Finn’s mouth was kissed red, his hair was a mess. He would have looked sweet, if not for the fact that Leo could see his cock, tenting his sweatpants obscenely between his splayed thighs.
“Fuck, Harzy,” Leo said, rubbing a hand through his hair, pressing it over his hot neck.
“Can I…” Finn plucked at his sweatshirt.
“Let me,” Leo said, kneeling on the bed and walking himself slowly over and between Finn’s thighs. He sat back on his heels, coaxing Finn into a sitting position to. He leaned in and kissed him slowly.
“We have all night,” Leo reminded him softly, and then pulled away to lift Finn’s sweatshirt above his head. He had a gray Lions t-shirt underneath, and Leo bent to kiss what skin of Finn’s neck the sweatshirt had revealed, just above his collar, before pulling the t-shirt over his head, too.
Finn made a questioning noise, his hands on the hem of Leo’s sweatshirt.
“Yeah,” Leo said.
Finn pulled his lip between his teeth again. Leo’s t-shirt came with his sweatshirt, getting stuck for a moment and making them laugh, before they were both staring at each other, bare chested.
“You’re too tall like this,” Finn smiled, hands finding Leo’s bare waist and tugging. “Come closer.”
Leo eased Finn back against the pillows, balancing himself over him. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to the center of Finn’s chest, letting his lips drag, and pressing another one over his sternum. He glanced up. “Better?”
Finn nodded hurriedly, hand going to Leo’s hair. “Better.”
Leo kissed his way down Finn’s chest, feeling it rise and fall quicker as he went. He kissed the strong flex of his abs, the light dips between his ribs, and finally, his hips, just above the band of his sweatpants. Leo looked back up at Finn and raised his eyebrow.
“Yes, I’m, oh fuck,” Finn was flushed down to his chest. “I might come in like—point two seconds, okay?”
“Be my guest,” Leo said, and began to tug Finn’s sweatpants down—no underwear. “Fuck, Harz.”
“I was being relaxed.”
Finn’s cock bobbed free, the head swollen and leaking. The sight made Leo’s throb. He let out a breath, and so did Finn.
Leo reached out and smoothed his hand around the base, watching Finn’s hips stutter at the almost contact. Finally, Leo wrapped his hand around him, and gave a single, dry, pull.
Finn groaned softly from the head of the bed. “Fuck, baby.”
Leo’s eyes snapped to him, but Finn didn’t look surprised or embarrassed. His mouth was dropped open and he held out his arms. Leo went willingly, surging up to kiss him hard while Finn yanked at Leo’s sweatpants and underwear, shoving it down his legs far enough to kick them off.
Then, it was just them. Their cocks pressed together and Finn’s eyes practically rolled. Leo bent to suck a bruise into the tender skin below his ear as he rutted down against Finn, spurred on by the feeling of Finn’s blunt nails digging against his back.
“Yes,” Finn’s voice punched out of him and Leo felt his heels on the back of his thighs.
“What do you want?” Leo asked, breathless. He pulled back some and kissed Finn. “We can do whatever you want.”
“This,” Finn said against Leo’s cheek, mouth falling open again and hand tightening in his hair. “I want this.”
“C’mere,” Leo said, and pulled at Finn’s hip.
“What, you’re tired?” Even turned on as all hell, Finn managed to joke.
Leo only got them onto their sides, legs tangled, before Finn was pressing them together again and moaning. It was all Leo could do to think clearly.
“You said to show you,” Leo panted. “I’m showing you that we have all night. That we can do whatever we want, that you have me—”
Finn pressed against him, cocks wet together, with a gasp.
“I’m going to come,” Finn whispered, voice shaking as he gripped Leo’s ass to press them together harder. It Leo groan as his hand slipped close to his entrance. Finn blinked at him, eyes dazed and bright.
“You—do you like—”
Leo nodded.
“Jesus.”
Leo pressed a lingering kiss to Finn’s mouth. “Would you do that for me, Harzy?”
Finn’s hips stuttered, eyes squeezing shut and he came between them with a cry, stripping Leo’s chest thickly.
The sight, Finn’s sloppy kiss, and his hand brushing over his crease, had Leo following. Leo reached between them and closed a hand around them both, working them through their orgasms. He swore Finn’s nails would leave marks tomorrow. He felt Finn’s hand press against his lower back, and had a sudden thought of a broader heat there—Logan. Logan’s deep voice in his ear, pressed all along his back, maybe even slipping inside of him—
Leo’s hips twitched as his cock valiantly spurt out nothing, pleasure wracking him all the same.
Finn was breathing hard, eyes closed and head fallen back against Leo’s arm on the pillows. Leo smoothed a hand up his chest, uncaring of the mess, and leaned over him, limbs heavy, to kiss his bared throat.
This was what Finn never had. This is what he and Logan never thought they could have. The very best part. Being together, sated and loving and close. Leo caressed his hip, and his strong shoulder, lips gentle all the while. He did it until Finn’s breathing slowly began to even out, until a tear appeared at the corner of his eye, and trailed slowly down his temple.
Leo kissed that, too.
“‘M—” Finn began, and his voice cracked. “Just relieved,” he rasped out. “Just, so…” he let out a breath, and opened his eyes, glassy and golden brown. “Leo.”
“I know,” Leo said, nodding quickly. “Believe me, I know.”
“I loved that,” A sleepy, almost loopy smile crossed Finn’s face and he laughed, another tear appearing. “Fucking Christ.”
Leo laughed, nudging his forehead into the warm space of Finn’s neck and closing his eyes. “Me too.”
He felt Finn’s arms wrap around him, squeezing tightly like Leo saw him sometimes do to other players during a celly on the ice.
“Can we snuggle?” Finn asked sleepily.
“We better,” Leo kicked the blankets out from beneath them, Finn reached for his sweatshirt, mopping their chests before throwing it away into the room. They stayed like that, Finn on his back, Leo nestled against him, ankles tangled.
When they woke up the next morning, Leo was still in Finn’s arms, his back to Finn’s chest, and Finn was kissing his neck.
“Two things on the to do list,” Finn whispered against his skin once Leo had hummed happily and pressed against him. “Get you some stars…”
Leo laughed and Finn’s arms tightened around him.
“And knock some sense into Tremzy.”
Leo smiled, looking at the empty space in front of him. They were leaving for Florida today. Leo could wait to see Finn and Logan in the sunlight.

Date Posted: 4/24/2020
My hands cradled the ever-growing bump I have for a stomach. I still can’t believe I’m pregnant. If you would have told me four months ago I was going to be pregnant and alone I would have never believed you. I was in a loving relationship with my high-school sweetheart and we were against the world.
Until I found him pressed in between the legs of some random girl from his accounting class. That was three months ago- exactly a week before I found out I was pregnant. I let him know immediately and he admonished me for thinking he was the father. Apparently, there was no way he could be the father- we had only had sex four times in the past year.
It only takes one time, I thought as I picked up the last of my bags. He had moved out of our apartment the week I found him cheating on me and I was more than capable of keeping the place myself but with a baby? No way. I knew nothing about being a mother and thankfully my parents insisted on me coming back home at the end of the semester so they could help me. I’d be finishing my degree online until I got more settled with the baby.
Until. This was only temporary until I got my life back on track.
This has been my mantra for the past few weeks. I’ve repeated it daily in hopes of quelling the anxiety of bringing in a new life. I repeat as I drive twenty minutes out of the city and back home. Parking in front of the house I grew up in, I can feel the dread knotting itself in my stomach. This made everything all the more real and I was scared. Scared to face my future. While I was battling my inner demons I never noticed Hoseok approaching the car until he pulled open my door.
“Y/n! You’re finally here!” he squealed as he awkwardly wrapped me up in a hug. My waist was pinned back against the seat with the seat-belt but he was pulling me out of the car. Hoseok was my adopted brother. He was a hybrid my parents saved when we were both young and he’s been my brother ever since but most people don’t agree with my family’s ideology.
“Hobi you’re hurting me.” I gasped and he instantly released me his fluffy black ears falling flat against his hair. I unbuckled before hopping out and wrapping him in the biggest hug possible. He welcomed the hug with a tightened grasp. I missed him.
“How’s the baby?” I hear my mother call from the porch and Hoseok releases me. He reached past me into the car to pop the trunk before going to unload. I turn towards my mother to see two men beside her as they all make their way down the driveway. Both of the men were taller than Hoseok and like Hoseok they were hybrids. They seemed to be total opposites as far as their fashion choices went. Monochromatic would be the only way to describe their appearance; one an entirely dark presence- his clothes were tight and black from top to bottom, the other was a soft entity- his clothes were light, ashy gray that matched his hair. They both walk past me and assist Hoseok without a glance towards me. My mother captures me in a warm hug.
“They’re doing fine and your baby is doing great too.” I finally answer, returning her hug. As we part, she lays her hand on my stomach with tears in her eyes.
“I swore Jinnie would give me my first grand-babies but here you are, breaking through every expectation once again.”
“I thought I would be an aunt before I was a mother too but I figured it’d be Joon. he was always the ladies’ man in high school.” I sighed exasperatedly. My other two older brothers were back in the city and have already started their careers. Seokjin was engaged and Namjoon was so focused on his career that I don’t think he’s been on a date since high school.
“Well, life has a funny way of making things happen. Have you found out the gender yet?”
“As I told you three days ago, they’re sitting weird and we can’t figure out what it is,” I said as we walked into the house. I could hear my dad in the kitchen, presumably cooking tacos from the smell of it. He was always the best cook in the house and insisted on cooking every meal. I followed the scent of cumin and sizzling beef as I could hear the pounding of feet up the stairs behind me.
“Baby girl, I’m making your favorite,” He says as he comes over for a quick side hug. As quick as he was here- he was gone. Back to tending to the tortillas and chopping the onions.
“I haven’t had tacos in forever, whenever I smelled any kind of beef I became nauseous,” I commented idly, my father’s face turning up in disgust and my mother’s showing sympathy.
“I couldn’t eat eggs for any of my pregnancies, especially during the first trimester.” she patted my shoulder gently and moved towards the fridge. I heard the stampeding feet once again and was quickly tugged into someone’s side.
“What’s my nephew’s name?” Hoseok asked loudly, his cheek pressed to the top of my head. I glanced quietly towards the doorway where the two men stood as still as a pair of statues while intently looking towards me.
“It might be a niece you’re getting.” I retorted while pulling myself away. I stepped towards the doorway duo with an outstretched hand. “Hi, I’m Y/n, sorry that no one else introduced us.”
The first one to shake my hand had broad shoulders and ashy gray hair. He had a long tail that reached the floor that was the same gray as his appearance but was accented by black spots. He held my hand gingerly and dipped his head towards me. “ I’m Taehyung, its nice to meet you.” His hand lingered as I turned to the next guy.
The second man had more muscles than I had ever seen on your average person. His face was jarring with the baby fat still clinging to his cheeks, he had short-cropped hair that accentuated his tall pointed ears. And unlike the first, he hesitated on taking my hand.
“Jungkook,” He said tersely before shaking my hand once and dropping it like it was hot coals.
“It’s nice to meet you both,” I said while stepping away once. Taehyung took a half step forward, his gaze still trapped on my face. Jungkook’s gaze was firmly focused on my stomach, an intense look that made my heart skip and subconsciously pull my hands forward to protect them.
“You’re not going to ask?” Taehyung asked, his face screwed up in confusion. I could feel Hoseok’s presence towering behind me- his hand reaching up to grasp my shoulder.
“Ask what?” My head cocked in confusion before realization dawned on me. “Oh, how rude of me. How was your day?” Hoseok chuckled from behind me before piping in.
“He meant asking what they were.” embarrassment made my face flush, how could I be so dense?
“Oh. Uh. Well, you can tell me if you want. I honestly don’t really care about that, I’m not too sure about what Hobi is.”
“Great Pyrenees. Goodness, you’d think after sixteen years you’d know that.”
“All I know is that you’re fluffy and a cuddle bug.”
“I’m a snow leopard hybrid.” Taehyung quickly interjected, his ears pointed up, they rose mere centimeters above his wild untamed curls. They were the same color as his ashy hair but had accents of black on the tips.
“Really? That’s so cool, I’ve never met a snow leopard hybrid before.” He mirrored my smile, his eyes crinkling into feline-esque slits. Faint patches of freckles were mapped across his cheekbones, curling up around his eyes.
“We’re as rare as our animal counterpart.” His eyes glanced quickly towards Jungkook meaningfully then flickered away just as fast. “Jungkook here is a German Shepherd hybrid.”
“Wow, that’s really cool.” Jungkook couldn’t meet my stare and quietly excused himself, high tailing his way back up the stairs. Taehyung ignored his retreating form and instead stepped into the kitchen, sitting at the counter. Hoseok followed after him relaxing into the second to last stool
“Sorry, he’s a bit apprehensive, Hoseok warned us about your pregnancy and that you might have crazy mood swings.” The gray man added conversationally, his eyes scanning over my face approvingly. He cracked a grin at the disbelief that spread across my face.
“Crazy what?” my father chuckled at my incredulous tone, “Hobi I will kill you.” I stepped towards him menacingly and he shot up off his perch.
“See Tae? It’s already happening. Mom, get your daughter.” he cried out as he circled around the counter towards mom.
He tried to duck behind her smirking form as I neared but he underestimated the drama mom lived for. “You only brought this on yourself, honey.” She flitted over to dad’s side and taste-tested the corn salsa.
“Who’s gonna save you now?” I smirked at him as I crept closer, my hands poised to pinch the ever-loving shit out of his cheeks.
“This isn’t fair, I can’t fight a pregnant woman,” Hobi whined as he resisted my efforts- his entire upper body leaning away from me.
“If either of you scoundrels hurt my grand-baby I will ground you both.” my dad intoned, halting both our figures. My hands cupping his face and his pushing against my shoulders lightly. Taehyung was laughing at us- he had melodic giggles.
“Taehyung dear, will you go tell Jungkook it’s time for dinner? Y/n and Hoseok go set the table.” Mom ordered and all three of us obeyed instantly. Hobi pulled a stack of plates out the cabinet and I rounded up the silverware. Taehyung was up the stairs by the time Hobi and left the kitchen and headed over to the dining room. I straightened out the red table mats and laid out a set of silverware while Hobi was a step behind me laying out his stack of plates.
“So, all jokes aside, how has it been?” he asked as we finished up, I leaned heavily against the chair in front of me. It sucks. I’m about to be responsible for a whole person. I’m scared and alone. Is what I thought but there was no way I could actually tell him that.
“Well, it’s not what I had planned but I’ll get through it. It’s weird being back here when I’ve been living in the city for the past three years.” A wry smile managed to take residence on my face.
“You’ll get used to it, and like you said you’ll get through it. Have you heard from him?” Hobi settled into the chair directly across from me. He started to fiddle with his spoon as I sunk down into my seat.
“No, and I don’t want to. He said he wasn’t the father and that he didn’t want to be.”
“Jin and I will still kick his ass if you want us to.” He was focused on the spoon in his hand, but I could tell that emotionally he was struggling. He was always the more empathetic of my brothers and showed to be more protective of our family at every turn. He was the first one I told when I found Henry was unfaithful and he was the first to know I was pregnant.
“No, it’s fine. We don’t need that loser anyway.” I smile at him, hoping to convey my appreciation to how he’s been so strong in supporting me. My eyes strayed up to the stairs, the question finally breaking through. “Uh, what’s with our two guests? Friends of yours from work?”
“No, the shelter caught on fire last week, and since mom and dad are certified for fostering they brought them in. Mom didn’t tell you?” Hoseok cocked his head to the side, his brows furrowed.
“She didn’t but that sucks about the shelter. When will it be fixed?” The shelter was where hybrids could stay and be safe. And, as unfair as it is, where they could find their next home. Hybrids had a terrible history and humans were horrible when it came to them. Many held no regard for their hybrids- considering them no better than an animal. Thankfully by adolescence hybrids usually find their place in life and the shelter typically only houses kids being adopted out. There were cases where a family who could no longer provide the care for their hybrid had to surrender them to the shelter. Cases presumably like Taehyung and Jungkook.
“Boss said a couple of months until the renovations are all finished.” Hoseok was a volunteer at the shelter, he has been since high school. Hybrids weren’t allowed to work without the permission of their family (something that outrages our family to no end) and most could only work in volunteer positions.
“Maybe they’ll finally fix the break room's window.” I teased, for as long as I can remember the window has been duct-taped together. No matter what- renovations or accidents being repaired- the window has remained duct-taped together.
“That window has been broken since Hoseok came into the family,” Dad chimed in as he swept into the room. He was carrying the frying pan full of steak in one hand and a table protector in the other. He laid it in the center of the table as Mom, Taehyung, and Jungkook followed behind with their arms full of the side dishes.
“There’s always hope.” Retorted Hobi, ever the optimist.
“I highly doubt it- it’ll probably be the only thing missed by the renovations.” Dad shook his head, having lost hope on that window years ago.
“What’s being missed?” Mom asks, situating the chopped tomatoes and the tower of tortillas.
“The shelter’s break room window.” I supplied, helping pull out the chair to my right for her to sit. Jungkook settled in the seat in between Hoseok and my dad; Taehyung claimed the seat on the right of my mother.
“Oh that thing has always been broken, I figured they’d fix it years ago. Anyway, Hoseok dear pass me the sour cream.” at that, we all settled into making our plates.
“Dad, this is sublime, I’ve been living off of pizza and ramen for the past few months.” The taco was by far the best thing I’ve eaten in months. The seasonings and fresh ingredients almost overwhelming my poor college student tastebuds. Dad smiled down the table at me.
“Is that healthy for the baby?” Hoseok asked making a face of concern directed to my stomach.
“You can worry about yourself- I already got an earful of complaints from mom about prenatal vitamins.” Jungkook snorted at the retort and smiled at me for the first time.
“Honestly what's the difference between prenatal vitamins and regular vitamins?” Taehyung asked, turning towards my mother and I. I shrugged and shoved another taco in my mouth. Mom said they were important and I believed her- plus my doctors said it was great when I had told him I was already taking the vitamins.
“They have more iron and other nutrients that pregnant women don’t get enough of.” Mom explained and Taehyung nodded thoughtfully.
“Pregnancy is so much work, I don't know how you did it three times mom.” Mom laughed at that- covering her face with a napkin.
“Raising you four was way more work, pregnancy was a breeze compare to four teenagers.” She looked at me with pointed eyes. Ah, yes, the dreaded teenage years I would soon face. I grimaced at the thought of hormone-fueled years. Hopefully, I’ll have a daughter, I knew how girls worked throughout puberty.
“Hey, Namjoon wasn’t nearly as bad as the other three.” Dad defended, he was always on the defense of his supposed angel child.
“Joonie almost slept with the entire highschool our junior year and I’m surprised he even got through college without a baby,” Hobi interjected loudly causing Taehyung to laugh.
“No really, Jin, and I thought he was going to catch something.” He continued, turning towards the gray hybrid. His eyebrows were raised and his eyes expressed the utmost of sincerity.
“Your brother did not.” Mom joined the defense, her and dad believing the facade Joon had put up throughout our childhood.
“That’s what you think, he was a sneaky little bastard.” I chimed in joining Hobi’s side. Jungkook and Taehyung were giggling to themselves watching us all bicker.
“Middle children always are,” Jungkook said joining the offensive.
“They’re nowhere near as spoiled as the youngest.” Hobi suddenly turned on me, the shock of betrayal apparent in my scoff.
“She’s the only girl, you guys never stood a chance.” The unexpected support form Taehyung had me smirking at my new enemy.
“It’s not my fault I’m the favorite,” I flipped my hair over my shoulder and leveled Hobi with a teasing glare.
“Seokjin might beat you there.” Mom rebuked, completely sideswiping me.
“Hey! Does your grandchild mean nothing to you?” I cried out in mock surprise, Jin was mom’s angel child.
“Honey, we promised not to tell them.”
“Honestly, high key offended but not surprised.” Hoseok shook his head as he continued on with his taco. The room dissolved into chatter as we finished dinner; I excused myself from the table to unpack.
I slowly made my way up the stairs while taking the time to look at all the photos of my brothers and me throughout the years. My room was the first room at the top of the stairs- Hoseok’s was directly across. Namjoon and Seokjin’s rooms were the other two rooms but both have now turned into guest bedrooms ever since they graduated college. My room used to be our parents’ when we were really young but soon after bringing Hobi into the family, they renovated the garage into the master bedroom of their dreams.
My room was still the ugly lime green color that I begged my dad into painting it when I was in middle school. The furniture was a yellowing white and had layers of neon colors splattered on it. Coming home really incited the cringe-worthy memories of my early teen years- swore it was cool at some point. My suitcases and duffel bags were resting on my bed. I decided to shuffle my music while unpacking the impossible amounts of clothes I managed to pack.
~~~~~~~~
“Now all your love is wasted, then who the hell was I?” I sang along, lost in the moment of hanging up all of my shirts. One bag remained after I finished my shirts- my underwear and socks. I was startled out of my peaceful reverie at the abrupt knock at my door. I whipped around to see Jungkook hesitating at my doorway with a shy smile.
“Your mom asked me to bring this up to you,” he answered my unasked question and held out a plate with chocolate cake. My mouth watered just looking at it.
“Thank you Jungkook, just set it down on that dresser and I’ll get it when I finish this up “I waved towards the surface closest to him with the hanger in hand while hooking on a sweater. I watched him from the corner of my eye as he slowly stepped into the room and laid the cake on the dresser.
He stood in place while looking around at my room his gaze finally settling on the pile of luggage on the floor at the foot of my bed. “Do you need any help?”
“No,” My answer was quick and he seemed to flinch at it. To soften the unintended blow I smiled awkwardly, “but you’re more than welcome to hang out in here.”He meandered over to edge of the bed as I hung up the last shirt from my bag. It was silent as I shoved the bag off the bed and onto the pile of other emptied ones and made my way over to my cake. I hopped up onto the dresser to sit so I could face Jungkook while I ate. He avoided looking at my face and instead looked at the posters hung on my wall that were of artists that never really charted on any kind of chart.
“What kind of music are you into?”He looked at me quizzically as I finally broke the awkward silence between us.
“Well, that’s a tough question. A little bit of everything I guess, mainly pop if I had to settle on a genre.” I finished my cake and set it to the side as I smiled at him wildly.
“Me too, I kind of go in phases though, like it’ll be pop and then I’ll really get into 70s indie rock for a couple of weeks.” He softly grinned at my enthusiasm before snickering.
“You sound like Tae when he gets into his movies, it’ll be a week-long showing of all marvel films and then two months of obscure Buster Keaton films.” His tone sounded as if he’s experienced this far too many times to count.
“Buster Keaton was the shit though,” my proclamation was met with the horror of a man too well versed in debating Buster Keaton.
“Oh god, not another one.” he groaned, flopping back onto my bed. I laughed a little until he sat up again, his smile sobering me up.
“So how long have you and Taehyung known each other?” Were they from the same home before being placed in the shelter? It wasn’t that often that people were able to bond so well when in the shelter with how short their stays typically were.
“We have been roommates at the shelter for, I guess, about a year now. He’s my best friend.” Jungkook’s smile was the complete opposite of what should accompany that sentence. A month was the maximum I had ever heard of someone staying in the shelter. I schooled my features to not show the shock I felt.
“Who me? It better be me or else I’m chopping heads off.” Taehyung entered the room in the most dramatic way possible. Unlike Jungkook he hadn’t waited for an invitation and instead strutted into the room while Jungkook rolled his eyes at the theatrics.
“I hear you’re a fellow Keaton aficionado.” My statement caused him to falter in his stride, he quickly recovered with a beaming smile directed towards me.
“On occasion, noir is where my heart is truly.” His hand clutched at the thick gray cardigan right above his heart.
“Your heart changes every other day.” Jungkook rebutted, his eyes rolling so far back he might lose them back there.
“She’s noncommittal okay, we don’t judge here.” Taehyung glared at his best friend and it made my heart swell at how cute they both were.
“I’m most definitely judging,” Jungkook muttered falling back on his elbows and staring up at the ceiling, feigning annoyance.
“Can you believe him Y/n?” The deep timbre of his voice negated any nasal squeak he might otherwise have from his whiny tone.
“He’s a real scoundrel, the worst of them all.”
Sorry I've been missing in action.
Long story short I got very injured at the labs, but I've been making a fast recovery. For the more detailed, graphic version, you can read below. Warning: Mention of hospital, blood, car accident.
As I mentioned, I got really injured at work beginning on February 21 at around 9 PM. It was during a routine check at some of the sites, one in particular needed our higher clearance because there had been a breach at a fence that past week, so I, and two other guards went to check out any tampering of the fence again. They say it might be vandals but a lot of them say it was some kind of large animal. The road to those sites are a single path through the woods, lit with a few lights, no curves, just a flat road with a hill on one side. It hadn't snowed that week either, so no fear of ice or anything. It was just a routine jeep trek.
It happened so fast. Our vehicle was knocked over, I'm not even sure how, but we were rolling in the dark down a hill, hitting trees. I remember the shouting, holding fast, and the glass. I remember crawling toward a tree and trying to sit up against it or maybe I was put there by the other guard, Dolores, I remember her telling me to stay awake. I asked her if I was dreaming. It didn't feel real. I asked what was happening to me because I couldn't move right, everything felt so slow and muffled. I passed out by the time they got us into the medical ward. I don't remember them putting me in a gown or putting in an IV. I woke up later, I buzzed the call button out of fear and pain. My whole left side was throbbing. A nurse was relieved I finally came to. She gave me pain meds and called the doctor in.
I was told there had been an accident, that much I already knew, but no one was killed, just injured. I lost a lot of blood, my uniform was soaked in it and they had to cut it off me. Part of the metal from the door frame folded in and pieced my left shoulder and I had minor cuts on my hands and arms from the glass. My blood pressure dropped so low they were scared my heart might've stopped. I was given blood, hooked up to a lot of things and I would have to stay under watch for a few days. There was a lot of tests they needed to do to figure out just how bad my injuries were.
For the next few days I was just sleeping, I couldn't sit up without feeling dizzy. I had to lay semi flat, my blood pressure was still very low. My left side was still throbbing and the stitches itched. A lot of bruises developed from being tossed around like I was, mostly on my arms because I was shielding my face and head. My minor glass cuts stung while batheing. Nurses came in every few hours to check my vitals, help me use the restroom, shower, help me eat, ect. I got so tired from the smallest things. I couldn't call anyone, my phone was in my locker. I finally got someone to help me call my brother to tell him what happened. My brother was naturally scared, he thought something happened to me and he was sad to know he was right. He wanted to see me, but he couldn't, I was in the medical ward on lab property. He wanted to call our mom to tell her but I told him to wait, there was a possibility that I might be transferred to a local hospital where they can visit me, and I didn't want her panicking and trying to drive up here in bad weather. It's best she waited til things cleared up.
After the first week I was transferred to a local hospital after getting a bunch of tests done. No brain trauma, no broken bones, no blood sugar issues or thyroid problems. I could sit up in bed by then and eat on my own. I still couldn't walk very well without feeling really dizzy, again, low blood pressure. A lot of minor bruises were fading away. I never had my anemia officially confirmed, but they confirmed it and had me take daily iron and placed on a blood building diet in the new hospital. I was tested for covid, I came out clear.
My brother and mom visited me daily, and the other doctor said I was recovering really quickly, that gave us a lot of hope. I could be out of there by a few days, though my blood pressure was worrying her. Seems it wasn't so much the blood loss, but that it might have been an underlying condition already linked to my untreated anemia. She would get the in-house dietitian to include a bit more natural sea salt to my iron rich diet, as well as tell me what I should eat at home and that I need to drink a lot more water than I normally did. This is a problem I've had for awhile, I forget to drink enough water. The doctor warned me I better remedy that immediately especially with low BP. My mom was already taking notes. She really wanted to just take me home already. I really liked her being there, I'm not that shy about my body, but I honestly felt better having my mom bathe me and comb my hair instead of strangers doing that. She was also a lot more gentle around my stitches and bruises.
Eventually I did come home, I still needed a lot of rest and help getting out of bed. I had to fight the urge to clean house, help with groceries, ect. I'm so used to being self sufficient. I felt so frustrated that just walking around the room would tire me out, when I'd hike for miles just a few months ago. I was tired of sleeping and sitting down. But there wasn't much else I could do. I did a lot of origami, my bro got me a coloring book, I watched a lot of movies, took my iron -which is nasty btw-, ate meals that were saltier than I normally would prepare but my taste buds would have to adjust. I was happy my new diet included a lot of fish though.
I did have some close calls. I really thought I could stand up in the shower instead of sitting, and wound up calling for my mom to help me up after collapsing. I collapsed again when I was trying to cook dinner for myself. My face, according to my mom, was drained of color and my breathing was shallow. I felt so dizzy and nauseated. She nearly wanted to call the hospital again. My bro said I was pushing myself too hard and I always had a problem with not asking for help. That I needed to learn to stop being so damn stubborn and rest. To anyone else, that sounds harsh, but he knows me way too well, probably better than our mom. I do have that problem, I do push myself too much. After that, I decided to be more patient with myself. I was sick and might be sick for awhile.
This week I'm doing a lot better. I can do my daily things now, I even went to get groceries and take a little walk to the river. But I can't over do it, I can't stand up or walk for too long, and I can't lift anything heavy, otherwise I get bouts of dizziness and need to sit down. The pain isn't as bad on my back anymore though it's still very sore, my arms, especially my left side, have a dull pain. I can't sleep on my back and left side, only my right and on my stomach. A lot of the cuts on the back of my arms and hands have scabbed over, minor bruises are gone but major ones on my shoulder and neck are still pretty dark and tender. I'm still finding glue spots on my chest and stomach from the medical tape and the EKG patches they put on me, but a bit of lotion is taking it off. My stitching, according to my mom, is definitely going to leave a pretty bad scar above my shoulder blade, but it's fine. My body has a lot of scars here and there from close calls, but I consider them ' Marks of Life'. They're proof I survived and thrived.
It'll take time for me to really feel like I'm back to normal. My mom refuses to go back home until I make a full recovery. She hasn't tended to me like this for a long time, mainly because I rarely get sick. I trait from my dad's side. We don't get colds or flus for years, no history of cancer, heart issues or diabetes, and his family usually remain active to their elderly years, not to mention our graceful aging. My dad used to say it was our native blood, we're just built tougher. The only thing that could kill us is getting injured like this. God, he'd be so worried about me though. I remember how he'd fuss over me when I skinned my knee as a child or got my allergies. If he was alive, he'd probably refuse to let me do anything out of bed, but then that's exactly what I should be doing anyway.
I got a report on the other guards health yesterday. Dolores and Elijah. She was the least hurt out of all of us, just a dislocated arm, mild whiplash, and some really bad glass cuts on her chest and arms, she's home recovering with her husband and kids. Elijah was the driver and got knocked unconscious with a bad concussion, his entire left arm was sliced by glass and metal, he lost a lot of blood like me and is recovering just as slow as I am. He opted to stay in the lab medical ward because he doubts his roommate can care for him at home, he's on a lot of pain meds, so he sounded distant on the phone. I think out of all of us, he's going to take the most time to recover. I told him I'd pray for him and if he wants, I can visit. He appreciated that a lot. I thanked Dolores for helping us that night, she was the one trying her best to keep us alive and sent the distress signal on our ARK devices so they could find us in the dark. Without her, I think we would've bled to death.
God, it feels like a distant nightmare. I still can't figure out how we were knocked off the road like that. Something hit us out there and it was strong. I felt the impact in the backseat, but I didn't see it. Dolores says it looked like a bear, but bears aren't that strong. Eli says he saw horns, so maybe a bison. Bison are that strong, especially against a little jeep. The incident is still under investigation. The lab is also very concerned about how this happened. It's possible the same thing that hit us, has been tampering with the fence.
One less thing to worry about is the hospital bill, the accident happened on lab grounds, everything is taken care of through them, probably because they don't want to get sued. They are giving us another two weeks before we report back in to the doctor for another round of tests and physical tests, as well as check to see if my stitches were still secure. Our return to work solely depends on our results, we may not be able to come back until late April. They really want to be sure we're okay. Because I'm an 'Ophanim' aka Tier 3 guard, I'll also be given a mental test before being hooked back into Selene. They just want to be sure there's no cognition issues and I can sync properly to her. I may have to do a refresher since I've been away for so long, but I'll worry about that when it comes.
Well, if you read this far, thanks. I hope I didn't scare you all too much. I am doing a lot a better though, I promise. I'm getting stronger everyday, though activity on this blog will be slow. Send me some prayers, good vibes, whatever. I'd really appreciate anything. Hope you've had a good month, better than mine hopefully.
Man of the House | prologue
Sam Wilson/fem!Reader, future dark!Bucky Barnes/fem!Reader
Of first meetings with your landlord and being enamoured with the hauntingly beautiful house. A new start.
► warnings(!): none for this chapter, eventual dubcon/noncon, eventual choking in future chapters. this is a dark fic.
a/n: I’m opening a taglist for this series, just hmu with an ask.
When people think of Fall, they can’t help but attribute it to the crispy coldness, the yellowing of leaves, or children in pumpkin patches. Young adults would probably think of the pumpkin spice lattes from cafes, or for the fans of the occult, All Hallow’s Eve’s approach comes to the mind. Just like the changing of leaves, for you, Fall reminds you of new beginnings. A fresh start.
The autumn wind chills as you huddled closer in your coat, trying to retain warmth. Your old car —a Studebaker Lark ‘63— parked on the curb of the road as you approached the house.
Ahead over you, in its Gothic Revival glory, sat a white wooden house. The drab grey sky made it seem more imposing in stature. The roof was a contrasting grey, steeply pitched with an arched gable. Delicate wooden trims decorated the front; nothing intricate but a simple design. Dirty windows entered your peripheral, the accumulated dust blurring them.
Taking everything in, the house seemed well-maintained, but the chipping of paint reminded you of its age.
Nevertheless, for a structure of such grandeur, it was astonishingly inexpensive. After hours of pouring over internet searches, you couldn’t believe your eyes when you stumbled upon it.
The house was a classic; with its architecture and size, you deemed it perfect. Located in a quieter part of Maryland, bordering DC; not too far from your place of employment, but far from the cacophonies of the city. This, you considered, was your fresh start.
Standing near the driveway was a greying gentleman; grey hair perfectly coiffed, crow’s feet in the corners of twinkling blue eyes. You assumed he’s in his 60’s or 70’s. He greeted you, his weathered face smiling, with a walking stick in hand, although he still seemed strong for his age.
“Good day, Mr Rogers,” you smiled, shaking his offered hand. “Thank you for meeting me today.”
“It’s a pleasure, dear,” he replied. “Let’s go in, shall we?”
Stepping onto the porch, you observed your surroundings. The rustling of trees by the wind was the most prominent of sound, if anything else, it was dead quiet. You could see other houses scattered in the distance, however no immediate neighbours were within vicinity.
The click of the front door unlocking pulled you. The inside was dark, the dusty windows permitting little light, while the floor was covered by a thin layer of dust.
Mr Rogers walked in first, pushing the door and held it open for you. You thanked him, pleased with his gentlemanly ways.
A hiss left you at the sudden switching of lights, attacking your eyes as they readjusted. You blinked a few times to take in the interior.
The hallway was long; cream coloured wallpaper hugged its sides, ending to a larger room in the distance. The walls were bare except for a few random antique mirrors. To your left, a stairway sits. It contrasts the walls; a rich, sturdy, mahogany. To your right, an entrance way opens up; silhouettes standing in the dim shadows.
“I apologize, it’s a bit dusty,” said Mr Rogers, sheepishly. “I try to clean it up at least once a month.”
“By yourself?” you ask, bewildered.
He chuckled, “No, with a cleaning company, dear.”
Telling you to follow him, Mr Rogers stepped into the entryway to your right, switching the lights on.
The silhouettes you saw earlier were of the furniture strewn about; chesterfield sofas, armchairs, and antique floor lamps crowding the room. A fireplace stood near another entrance, a large mirror erected over its mantle, reflecting the rays from the porch windows. It looked like a scene out of those classic films you used to love. If tidied properly, this would be the best reading spot, you thought.
“This is the parlour,” he announced, “Great for having guests over.”
“It’s beautiful,” you beamed.
Moving forward, Mr Rogers walked through the other entryway, leading to a dining room. From your vantage point, you could see this is the room the hallway ends up to.
Smacked in the middle, a sleek white marble dining table sits. Its length stretches across the room, sets of dining chairs accommodating tens of people. It looked ideal for hosting dinner parties.
The dining room was connected to the kitchen in the back, easing the transferring of food. When you stepped foot into the kitchen, you didn’t expect it to be extravagantly spacious. You smiled, envisioning yourself cooking meals in this kitchen.
“There are a few pots and pans under the cupboards if you ever want to use ‘em,” the older man says. “They were my wife’s”
Curious, you pressed, “Your wife, sir?”
“Yep, my wife, Peggy,” he smiled, eyes distant, lost in a different time, “Actually, she was the one who owned this house, or atleast, her family did. I inherited it after she passed away, felt it was too big to live by myself ya know?”
You hummed in understanding. He must have lived a fulfilling life with his wife, judging by the look. After a few seconds, he snapped out of it, composed himself, and marched on.
“This here leads to the back of the house,” he gestured to a door, the upper half a transparent window. You could see tall blades of grass and the dense trees swaying out back, reacting to the wind. “And this one’s the laundry room, the bathroom’s next to it,” he continued, opening a second door in the kitchen.
You both left the kitchen, entering the hallway through the dining room. As you passed, you noticed a set of stairs obscured under the main staircase. It was smaller, leading down under, ending where a thick black door stood in slight darkness.
“Uhm, Mr Rogers?” you asked, pausing. “What’s that room?”
The older man stopped, turning to look back.
“Oh, that’s the basement. Nothing exciting down there though, just a furnace and some tools. I’ll show you soon,” he seemed to ramble, before turning his back quickly. Without waiting for you, he started climbing the stairs, slowly, hand gripping the railings tightly, walking stick in the other.
That prompted an eyebrow raise from you, he almost seemed flustered. Shrugging it off, you followed.
“So, tell me, dear,” he started, “What brings you searching for a house in this area? It’s not exactly the most happening of places for youngsters.”
The question surprised you. Usually most landlords don’t bother to know such, especially of potential tenants. Their only concern being prompt payments, or you’re out.
“Um, I’m a vet, and I actually work closer here than if I live in the city,” you replied, “Plus, it beats the DC traffic.” Which was true, harrowing through traffic everyday was exhausting.
Mr Rogers chuckled in response.
The second floor was the same layout as the floor below; a long hallway with doors. You noticed there were even more mirrors on this floor. Come to think of it, there were mirrors in every room you’ve been in so far.
“There are three bedrooms and a bathroom on this floor,” —the man explains, opening a door— “And this is the master bedroom.”
It was spacious and regal, light blue walls with dark furniture occupied the room; a king-sized four poster, a vanity, and a large wardrobe stood next to a closet. On the furthest side, two stained glass doors stood, leading to a balcony overlooking the front yard. The colours from the glass reflected on the walls, giving allusions to crystalline shapes. You imagined how they’d reflect during sunset. It was perfect.
The tour commenced with Mr Rogers showing the other two bedrooms and bathroom. At the end of the hall, he led you to a wooden ladder that stood connected to a latch door in the ceiling.
“That’s the attic, nothing much but dust and some old furniture,” he pointed, “You can take a look at ‘em and see if they’re to your liking when you decide to move in.”
Heading down the stairs, the basement was the last place on the tour.
“So, how are you liking the place so far?” he asks, walking beside you.
Biting your lip, you chose your words carefully. “It’s beautiful, the furniture, the decor, and such big space as well,” you said, “Although I’m surprised that I’ll be getting all of this, especially with the price.”
The elder man picked up on your apprehension, “Ah, about that, I’ll discuss the details with you after we finish.” He took the lead, pushing the thick black door with his body. He was stronger than you expected.
A sense of foreboding was felt at first as the door creaked. After going further down the steps, it wasn’t as dark as you expected. Minimal light shone in through small windows on the upper walls, the glass separating the two worlds.
The dangling chain on the ceiling was pulled, flooding the space in light. Adjusting to the brightness, you could see it was dustier in the basement. Cobwebs hung in corners, entangling corpses with them. Thick dust covered the surface of shelves, as if a blizzard invaded. An even thicker silence settled, deafening to the core.
“Don’t you worry about that thing,” the man’s voice echoed, pointing to a furnace in the back, “Got that serviced this year, if anything happens just let me know.” Turning to the shelves, he seemed to inspect them for a few moments, eyes squinting. “And there’s a lot of tool boxes in here,” he gestured to the heavy shelves, pushed to the walls, “Feel free to use ‘em.”
Not wasting any time, Mr Rogers turned back towards the stairs. You followed suit, pulling the chain, basking the basement in darkness once more.
As you began to ascend, a sudden strong scent invaded your nostrils, wafting through like an uninvited guest. You gave another whiff. A musky scent, wild, and smoky, further reminding you of Fall.
Casting one last glance into the darkness, you shrugged it off, and closed the door. Must’ve been Mr Rogers’ faint cologne.
You observed the state of the porch as Mr Rogers locked the front door. The porch needed sweeping, you noted, stepping on a sea of dead leaves, their crunching audible.
Overlooking the lawn, you noticed a pair of blue eyes at the edge of the porch. A pair of white fluffy ears accompanied, flickering occasionally. You smiled, it seemed like you had a visitor.
Squatting down on the steps of the porch, you chittered, hoping to catch its attention. After a few seconds, a white blur zoomed in, scurrying then stopping abruptly at your feet. It mewled, wide blue eyes staring, demanding attention. You petted and scratched below its jaw, the creature emitting content purrs.
“Looks like she’s taken a liking to you,” voices Mr Rogers from behind, “She’s a stray, always coming ‘round.”
“I’m surprised, she’s very friendly,” you said, petting snowy fur.
Seconds pass, the cat’s purr the only sound.
“I’m sure you’ve been wondering regarding the rent,” he breaks the silence, taking a seat on the porch steps. “Why it’s so… well, cheap, for a fully furnished house like this.”
“Well… yeah, I actually almost thought it was a scam,” you replied, sheepish. “I had to actually see it for myself.”
The older gentleman laughed, “I don’t blame you, it sounds too good to be true.”
And indeed, it was. For a classic house like this, dating probably a century back, and fully furnished, something must be up. It was too good of a good bargain.
“Actually, there’s a reason why I put it that way,” he admits after a few beats. “Tell me, do you believe in ghosts, dear?”
You frowned, wondering where he’s going with this, “Can’t say I do.”
“Let me guess, atheist?”
“Agnostic.”
He smiles mirthlessly, “Well, I can’t say I believe in them either, but for the past years, I’ve been having trouble getting tenants to stay.” That piqued your curiosity.
“What do you mean, sir?” you pressed, intrigued.
“Past tenants have told me they’ve been… spooked while living in the house, like things disappearing and reappearing, or hearing footsteps and what not,” the man explains, “But I can’t say it’s true since it’s all peaceful whenever I stay here, or check up on maintenance. I’ve even had a friend stay here for a week, and nothing!"
Ah, the classic household haunting you’ve always seen in movies; missing items, heavy footsteps, the feeling of being watched. Sitting on the steps, you felt like a walking cliché; the stupid girl who goes into a large house knowing it’s haunted, wanting a taste of thrill. Yet, you can’t be bothered. You’ve always been a skeptic, a believer that science and logic can debunk these things.
“What I wanted to ask you is, would you still want to move here after all I’ve told you?” the older man asked. “I’d understand if you want to back out.”
His question shows how concerned he is about others, even if it’ll put a damper in his business. You felt lucky to have stumbled upon an honest and understanding landlord, not everyone had that privilege. But something felt off.
“I don’t understand, while I appreciate it, why do you need to disclose this, sir?” you ask, weirded out. “Isn’t it buyers beware?”
“It’s a part of the law to categorize it under ‘stigmatized’ property,” he replied. “Besides, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if you didn’t know,” he chuckled, you joined him. “So, what about it, dear?”
Stroking the cat, you thought about it. You were never a believer of ghouls nor other other-worldly beings, and you weren’t going to start now. While the presence of ghosts could never be proven or denied, you believed that every occurrence has a logical explanation, even the paranormal. You weren’t about to let go of a wonderful place just because some ghost decided to move in as well. Stigmatized or not, you’ve found yourself a good deal. The perfect start.
“Don’t worry Mr Rogers, ghosts or no, nothing's gonna stop me from living in this house,” you smiled. He returned it.
Later, after much discussion and the exchange of handshakes, you left the house with a sense of relief. Pulling out of the driveway, you waved to the older gentleman, before speeding off.
A few metres ahead, checking in the rearview mirror, you saw Mr Rogers still standing in the driveway.
His smile never faltered.
The next day finds you working endlessly at the clinic, meeting furry patients left and right, tending to their dilemmas. The clinic was almost never vacant, the seats occupied always leaving behind fur. To you, it has always been a fulfilling job. Sometimes you’ll get scratched, or hissed at, but at the end of the day it was always worth the care.
Lunch came a bit later. Sighing, your shoulders relaxed. After attending to a cat that decided it needed to throw a hissy fit, you really needed a break. While shovelling food into your mouth, your phone suddenly rang; Sam Wilson flashing on the screen.
“Hi, baby,” you picked up.
“Hello, baby,” came the sultry voice on the other end. “How’s my girl doin’?”
“She’s doing fine, thank you for asking,” you teased. “Why’d you call? Did something happen?”
Muffled chuckles rang through the speakers, “No, nothing happened, just wanted to know how you’re doin’. Hey, how was the house? All good?”
“It was gorgeous! And fully-furnished too!” you replied, gleefully. “It was all antique, the master bedroom was my favourite,” and you continued telling him of everything, from the fancy parlour to the stained glass doors. Sam listened attentively, humming and responding at appropriate times. And this is why you loved him. He was always the talkative one out of you two, yet he never talked out of turn, always putting you first. “Oh, and I’ve found out why it’s so affordable.”
“Let me guess, someone died in that house?”
You chuckled, “Close, apparently it’s ‘haunted’, ooh,” you booed. “The landlord said he had never experienced it during all his years there, nor did his friend that apparently stayed there. So it makes you wonder, if it were just stories from people paranoid about living in an old house.”
“Sounds like it,” Sam hummed. “Can’t wait to have sleepovers at your new place now.”
You laughed, missing his dose of humour and his presence terribly. “I wished you were there with me.”
“I wished I had too, baby,” he murmured, “So when’s the moving date? Gotta put these bad boys into good use.” You heard him grunting, probably flexing his bicep from the other end. Sam’s antics always amused you. He was your happy pill.
“I told Mr Rogers —that’s the landlord— I’ll be moving in two weeks,” you explained. “Do you mind taking a day off to help me? Pretty please?”
“Anything for you, baby.”
➵︎ You’re a fairy who accidentally wound up in this world, but with the help of a human you met, you’re hoping you’ll be able to find a way back
Pairing: Tsukkishima x Fairy!Reader Word Count: 1.6k [one-shot] Genre: fluff(?), fantasy Warnings: none
A/N: yepp this is pretty late but ive been busy lately plus i wasn’t rlly happy with how this turned out but figured might as well just post it -lily
The ground glowed blue. Fallen leaves and loose pieces of grass started swirling around you.
This is not good.
You saw a flash of white and suddenly fell through the ground.
The world became dark.
You screamed and flailed, flapping your wings out of instinct. It proved futile and you soon realized your surroundings were devoid of air. You were just… falling.
As soon as you realized this, everything became light again and you saw the grassy ground approaching fast. You hit the ground with a thud a second later and knocked yourself out.
When you woke up, you groaned and slowly got up. Turning around, you took in your surroundings. A few bushes sprouted here and there, grass that extended in all directions, and a smooth gray pathway that cut through the vibrant green.
That’s odd. There aren’t any pathways like this in the fairy kingdom.
You shrugged. Ah well who knows what projects the higher-ups are cooking up. This might just be another one of them.
You didn’t actually think it was some project the senior fairies were working on. It was just a way of trying to reassure yourself, and it wasn’t exactly working. The moment you woke up, you knew you weren’t in the Fairy Kingdom anymore
The scenery here wasn’t that different from the ones at home but there was still something that felt off about it. Maybe it was the pathway, or maybe it was the way the wind that blew in your face smelled a bit old. It didn’t seem to have the same freshness as the wind from back home. You tried your best to brush it off and come up with a plan.
Deciding the best thing would be to follow the path, you spread your wings, picked a direction, and let the path guide you.
After what must’ve been hours of flying, both wings were exhausted and you resorted to using your legs. The sky had become a palette of reds and oranges.
It’s dusk. That means the night folk should be coming out soon.
You shuddered remembering the last time you had a run-in with one of the night folk. Not wanting something like that to happen again, you picked up the pace.
A while later, you spotted two lights in the distance. It was coming closer and closer at an alarming pace. You froze on the spot and couldn’t move until you heard a loud, blaring sound and instinctively dived out of the way.
The lights zipped past and you could see they belonged to a shiny moving box of sorts. It wasn’t a creature you were familiar with and the fear that was inside since you fell through the portal started to grow.
You hurriedly got up and continued walking. The further you went, the colder it became. You huddled your thin wings around your arms and continued forward, not wanting to stop until you found something, anything, that could serve as shelter.
The pathway sloped downwards and you could make out faint lights coming from the valley below. Hurrying forward, you spotted what looked like a town and immediately uncurled your wings and flew down to it.
Upon closer inspection, this town was nothing like the towns of the fairy kingdom. Lights came from strange places and gave off a white tang. There wasn’t any grass here, save for a few patches here and there. Instead, the ground was all smooth. There weren’t many trees either and you wondered what these creatures used for their homes. Did they live in the huge blocks that covered the area?
You were curious to know what creatures lived here, and even more so, if they were welcoming.
-----
Practice had just ended and Tsukkishima was all ready to go home. Yamaguchi had stayed home sick so it was just him walking home today. He put on his headphones and strode out of school and onto the sidewalk leading home.
He was well past the school when he noticed a few street lights flickering. This area of town always gave him the chills. At this time of night, no one was out and the streets were ominously empty. It was also very quiet, which didn’t exactly bother Tsukkishima but always struck him as a bit off for some reason.
He was about to turn a corner when he bumped into someone. Looking down, he saw something, or rather someone, fumbling to get up. The force of walking into Tsukkishima had knocked them down so he begrudgingly gave them a hand. Begrudgingly because he was Tsukkishima, because he didn’t know this person, and because they were dressed head to toe in what looked like huge leaves and flower petals.
The oddly-dressed person ignored Tsukkishima’s hand and jumped up on their own. It was then he saw the insect-like wings protruding from their back.
Thinking this person was probably just another dedicated cosplayer, he muttered an apology and continued making his way back home.
-----
You stared at the creature you had just bumped into. This one was unlike the shiny moving box in that it had features similar to fairies.
It had a nose, two eyes framed by something unfamiliar to you, a band that extended across its head and covered the sides of it, two arms and two legs clothed in interesting-looking garments. It didn’t have wings but was carrying a sack of sorts over its shoulder. The creature was quite tall, taller than you by much, so you had to look up towards it.
Before you could say anything, he muttered something lost to you and turned to walk away.
“Wait,” you called out, going after it.
The creature didn’t turn around so you kept calling. It finally did and looked at you with what seemed to be extreme perplexity.
“What do you want?”
You paused, not quite understanding what this creature was saying but sensing it was somewhat annoyed.
Ohhh we don’t speak the same language. You smacked your head, ashamed of not realizing it sooner.
In one fluent motion, you took some golden-colored dust from a pouch by your side and sprinkled it on your lips, murmuring an incantation while doing so.
“Can you understand me now?”
The creature looked unimpressed and merely looked at you before repeating, “What do you want?”
“Umm..well you see, I’m lost. Could you tell me where we are..?”
The creature looked even more unimpressed and in a sarcastic tone he answered, “Japan.”
“J-Japan..?”
You’ve never heard of this Japan place before and you were starting to worry more.
“What? Don’t know what Japan is?”
You nodded sheepishly regretting not paying much attention in world studies class.
Now the creature just seemed to look shocked.
“Where are you from then?” it asked.
“The Fairy Kingdom,” you replied almost instantly.
It narrowed its eyes and scowled, “Where are you really from?”
“I told you, the Fairy Kingdom.”
-----
Tsukkishima had no idea why he was still talking to this person. They were clearly unhinged. He told them they were in Japan like the smartass he was but they seemed to have never even heard of it.
The Fairy Kingdom? Wings? Clothes made out of plants?? Yeah, they definitely needed help.
He was about to walk away, again, when they flew in front of him. They flew, with their insect wings that were apparently not a prop. He blinked once, twice.
“Could you--”
“You’re an actual fairy?” he interrupted.
“Uh yeah.”
“And you’re from the..Fairy Kingdom?”
“Yes. That’s what I’ve been saying,” the fairy pouted and flapped their wings in a huff.
Tsukkishima found that action a little cute but kept it to himself. He was still processing all this.
You stopped pouting and fluttered to the ground.
“Umm, so it seems I may have gotten myself a little lost and ended up here.” Looking up at him, you asked in your most pleading voice, “Could you maybe help me find my way back… please?”
He hesitated. He’s heard stories of deceiving fairies and how people said to not get into deals with them. Or maybe that was another fictional creature… Either way he wasn’t about to risk anything without the prospect of getting anything in return.
“What do I get? In return for helping you?”
“The satisfaction of doing a good thing?”
He shook his head, “Not good enough.”
“Ummmmm… I’ll owe you?”
“Hmm interesting offer,” he said with a smirk. “We can discuss that in detail later. For now, let’s go. It’s getting late.”
“Wait so are you going to help me?”
“Possibly.”
You cracked open a wide smile and jumped up in the air, flying alongside him as he walked down the path.
“Thank you… What was your name? I didn’t quite catch it.”
“You can call me Tsukkishima.”
“Tsukkishima..that’s kinda long. I think I’ll just call you Tsukki,” you said with a grin. “By the way, my name’s Y/N. Nice to meet you.”
He cringed internally wondering what he had just gotten himself into.
It’ll all be fine though. There’s no way this could be real. This was just some dream or hallucination brought on by his exhaustion from practice. Yes, that was it. He’ll gladly humor this fairy. It was just a dream anyway.
The next morning when he woke up, the first thing he saw was your face, wide-eyed curiously peering down on him.
He let out a yelp and quickly reached for his glasses.
Taking a deep breath, he calmed down and realized two things: he was late for school, and you were still here which meant… it wasn’t a dream after all.
A/N: qksnkd okk not my best fic,,, it feels incomplete somehow? idk maybe if i get some inspiration in the future i’ll consider writing more parts. also hoped tsukki wasn’t too ooc;-;
SALEM - Ch. 16
SAVED WORK
Summary: In all the centuries of your existence, you had never been dragged out of hiding by another god, put in a superhero team and forced to save the universe. But it seems your luck has run out.
_____________
Salem was nothing like he remembered it.
The town was quiet. No soft shouting in the background, or small children running around, bumping into him. You hadn’t sensed his arrival and run out to meet him with your usual wide smile.
There was nothing.
In fact, he smelled fire, ash, and some sort of cooked meat.
His nose wrinkled at the scent. He had never liked the smells fire left behind for whatever reason. He walked into the town and immediately sensed the use of magic. The grass was wet with red, but there were no bodies in sight. He was sure he sensed recent magic, maybe someone had decided to clean the place up.
But from what he could tell, there weren’t any humans around to do that. He looked around more, trying to figure out exactly where you were. Looking closer, he saw there were a few bodies, though they had been burnt to char. His eyes widened. He became a bit more nauseous now that he was able to identify one of the smells.
The bodies, whoever they were, seemed to have been haphazardly thrown by someone else. The saw the town’s square, a stacked of burnt wood in front of its usual decorations. There was another body tied to it, also burnt. It seemed less charred than the others but was still most certainly dead.
He rushed over to it. There was a nauseating squish sound beneath his shoes, a small amount of blood splashed onto his pant leg, staining the fabric. He recognized the woman there, he was sure of it. He couldn’t place it though.
The skin was charcoal black.
He ran his hand over the face. The red-black of the skin flaked under his head and he struggled to identify what he felt.
It was most certainly your magic.
It floated around the burnt wood, hovering in the air. It was stronger than he had ever felt it before. Strangely strong. It almost reminded him of his mother’s power. A strange, intense type of magic.
This had to be you. There’s no way you, even if you were a demi-god, could release this much power unless it was revenge for your own death. They had killed you.
He felt an extreme type of rage. A boiling kind of rage. The kind that bubbles in the pits of your stomach and makes you see red. He could feel water run does his face. He hadn’t even realized he’d started crying until he felt the tears drip from his chin.
He untied the body. He managed to teleport over to a nearby bench, something he had never perfect it. He’d never use it for long distances, but small ones were do-able.
He laid you down next to the lake he had met you at and slowly started at the sun. It was a sunrise instead of a sunset, and somehow that made this all worse. The universe had given you a sunset at the beginning and a sunrise at the end. Everything seemed to be backward. He would’ve laughed at the circumstances, but all that came to his ears was silence. His silence.
Your hands were frozen in place, creating a terrifying statue. An actual person etched in time. He used magic to drift your body out before allowing it to sink.
Loki woke up sweating, his shirt sticking to his back. He was breathing heavily as he whipped his head around, looking at his surroundings. His room. Rather the one Stark had assigned him. It didn’t quite feel like ‘his’ yet, but it was where he was supposed to sleep. Thor had somehow convinced the man of iron to let him stay on the same floor as you and share a small common area with you. Leave it to Stark to make over the top living areas. Usually, he wouldn’t mind silence. Especially since he spent his childhood with Thor, who wasn’t exactly known for being quiet. But with the knowledge that you were supposed to be there too, it felt unsettling. Odd.
He ran his hands over his face, feeling the sweat on his forehead. He had been dreaming about you. He didn’t want to get Stark’s hopes up. He may not like the man, but Loki wasn’t cruel. That and he’d seen rock fall from above him as he left. He was too far sense where you were, not that he was even sure where he should be looking. He wasn’t certain how to get to Kalan from Earth, Kalan to Earth, he’d much rather find a ship and fly. If you were dead, there was no point in going now. If you weren’t, you were probably already on your way. Either way, waiting seemed to be his only option.
He hadn’t spent any time outside of his room, aside from the day or two he was in the Avenger’s medical wing. Some of the team had come up to his door, asking questions.
Peter was the first one. He tried asking what happened, but Loki simply ignored until the boy eventually left, telling Loki that whatever happened wasn’t his fault.
It didn’t help.
Tony came several times.
At first, it was yelling. Mostly questioning why he was there and you weren’t.
And of course, there was Thor. Thor was concerned about Loki’s health, encouraging him to eat or get out of his room. It never worked.
Then, late that night he heard the soft, recognizable footsteps of the spider boy.
“Hi, Mr. Loki.” Peter started. There was a chair next to Loki’s door. Peter wasn’t certain who had put it there, but he pulled it closer to him and sat down.
“She left that note behind when you first left.” Peter held the letter in his hand. “Seemed like she wasn’t sure if it was a good idea in the first place.”
Peter’s hand was shaking. He could hear shuffling behind the door. He took a deep breath.
“I’m just going to read the note.”
Hello, all.
Well, this letter certainly won’t be the nicest thing you’ve ever read.
Sorry.
If this actually opens, I’d say chances are high that I’m dead. Don’t give up hope on me completely though. But, still.
Moros is still dangerous. If I’m not back, we probably didn’t manage to kill the asshole. I’m sorry. I’m sure I tried, but fighting isn’t an exact science, you know? I hope you’ll eventually forgive me for leaving without you.
Cap, you never really liked me. I was hoping that maybe by breaking the rules successfully, you might have more respect for me. I guess I failed that one. I’m sorry I never really proved myself a worthy teammate.
Tony, you are the best brother I never wanted. Thanks for showing me more about technology and humanity. It’s been a while since I’ve spent this much time with mortals. I know you’re upset, and I’m sorry. All my life I’ve wanted to be the hero. The person people think of when they need help, someone they feel they can rely on. You showed me I could do that. And for a moment, I really was a hero. I doubt you understand how much that meant to me.
Peter, I hope that project went well. Sorry I couldn’t help. I’ll miss you, kid. You’re smarter than you give yourself credit for. For once, just let yourself be in the spotlight, huh? You may not be an official Avenger now, but you will be. I promise.
Loki. Hopefully, I’ll find a way to save you even if I can’t save myself. I loved you years ago. And well I wouldn’t use the word “love”, I definitely feel strongly for you now. Maybe we could’ve been something again. I hope to see you in Elysium.
Everyone else. I didn’t know you well. I hoped that we would be close. That I would be a real part of this team, but it never seemed to happen. Still, thank you.
Your name was signed messily on the bottom. You had clearly been rushing. Peter was sure he heard something on the other side of the door. Your letter may speak about you like you were dead, but you asked him not to give up hope.
So he wasn’t going to.
Tony didn’t speak too much. I spent most of his time in his lab, which wasn’t too different from his norm. But he didn’t seem to make the same jokes. He hadn’t called anyone a nickname in a good few days. But even Nat missed Tony’s sarcastic comments.
Peter tried his best to get through to Tony, and Tony was clearly trying his best to make Peter feel better, but it didn’t seem to be helping either of them.
Loki stayed away from everyone. Everyone took turns bringing him up food. Most of the time he ate it, though sometimes he just didn’t want to get up. Losing you once was hard, losing you twice was taking a toll.
He went over every detail of the past two weeks in his head. Moros and Ker, Kalan, then hell itself. The small, chaste kiss you had planted on his lips before sending him back to Kalan. He wished he held it just a second longer. Maybe argued against you more. Tried to stay in Tartarus as long as he could. But no. He didn’t do any of that.
Centuries ago, you were the greatest person he had ever met. Nothing had changed.
***
On your travel, you dozed off more than once. Piloting a ship alone was boring. Insanely boring. And it’s like finally being alone let your body catch up with the events of the past two weeks.
Two weeks.
It seemed like longer.
Much longer.
You weren’t certain how long it took you to get home. Space was pitch black, and it was harder to navigate than you’d like to admit.
Over your life, you’d spent time in space. Gods were used to that sort of thing. But that doesn’t mean it was somewhere you liked spending your time.
You were sure it was at least a few days before you began to recognize the star patterns. By then, the ship was running low on whatever fueled it. You were thankful you didn’t have to teleport yourself again, you weren’t sure if you could handle that again. Physically or mentally.
The small patch over your eye made it difficult to see, much less find your way to Earth. You had never really gotten to see the stars around Earth up close, and although they were beautiful, you had much more important things to do.
You paced around the back of your ship, waiting to get the alert that you were entering Earth’s atmosphere. You let out a small groan. Not like there was anyone around to hear you.
It was silent. Eerily silent. Not a single sound around and it was beginning to drive you insane. You had started humming songs you’d learn over the past few hundred years. Some melodies you had overheard a century ago, other modern songs you had heard Stark playing in his lab.
You paced and hummed, trying to create some sort of sound besides the drowning quiet of space. Eventually, you heard a small siren sound, and the front windshield of the ship flashed red. A symbol came up in a language you hadn’t seen before. Thank the gods for Allspeak.
It seemed to be the Kalan equivalent of an exclamation mark, which was never good when accompanied by sirens and flashing lights.
You rushed to the front looking over some of the systems. The ones you understood at least. It seemed you were approaching Earth’s atmosphere far too fast.
You sat down in the pilot’s seat and steered the ship. Hopefully, it would stay intact enough to land.
***
Loki had spent the two weeks sitting in his room or in Tony’s garage. It had the body of the ship you had stolen. Tony didn’t want to rebuild it, so it made for a nice quiet place that nobody would look for him in.
He had brought a few books down, mostly Midgardian ones you had shown him centuries ago. Everyone was preparing to fight Moros, and he had sat in on more than a few strategy meetings. They mostly consisted of him repeating the same information over and over.
But the garage was quiet.
He paced around, picking his palm. It was a bad habit he had picked up from his mother over the years, but it helped calm his nerves. As he walked back and forth, the metal beneath him creaked. It was less than stable, which wasn’t reassuring, but at the moment he wasn’t particularly worried.
As he walked toward the back of the ship, he heard a soft crunch beneath his feet.
He lifted his boot and some broken petals fell from his shoe. It was the flower he had discarded into the ship after it had scratched you. He picked it up. The petals were only beginning to dry, and some were still the same soft purple they had been before. It really was a pretty color.
One thorn of the rose-like flower still had a small bit of blood on it. He frowned at the now dried liquid. He carefully set the flower aside and sat down on the floor, his head in his hands.
He took a deep breath before the ship shook. There was some sort of loud sound in the background and a few seconds went by before he heard a voice address him.
“Loki, Captain Rogers has asked you to meet the team outside immediately. He has also said you may need your armor.”
Loki sighed and stood. It felt more like clawing his way out of a whole than simply walking out of the garage. His armor appeared on him as he walked outside. He heard some yelling and other voices in the distance. And maybe someone crying?
When he stepped outside he saw a ship that had landed. Well, it was closer to ‘crashed’ but it was certainly better than his landing.
The man of iron and the Captain were yelling at each other, and he saw a body lying on the ground. He walked a bit quicker toward the group. The closer he got, the better he could hear the argument.
A doctor rushed past him toward the body, sitting next to the spider boy. She seemed to be checking vitals, and she gestured to someone behind him before a few other doctors walked past Loki with a stretcher. They picked the body up (which he could now tell was a woman with a large scar and a patch on her face).
“Tony you need to calm down. For all we know, Moros is coming here now. We need to wake her up as soon as possible.”
“I don’t care Steve. I thought she was dead. Everyone thought she was dead. She wrote a note saying she was dead! Let her relax for five seconds, will you?”
Peter was trying his best to get you up. At the very least, he wanted to make sure you were alright.What the hell had happened? The was a slight, still raw-looking scar on about half your face, though it was partially covered by a white and red patch. He assumed the red was blood, but did his best to ignore that.
Steve and Tony were yelling in the background, everyone else was talking amongst themselves and interjecting every so often. Thor and Clint had gone in to get Cho not too long ago and help her with any supplies she’d need and soon they had all returned and you were taken away. Loki had arrived, and Peter saw his face shift into one of horror as you passed.
“What is going on?” Loki said, rapidly looking between Tony and Steve.
Steve sighed before answering. “It seemed Y/n is alright. Broadly speaking that is. We need to wake her up immediately and get her back with the team. It’s not ideal, but we need information and we need it now.”
Tony rolled his eyes. “She needs rest. Whatever happened to her obviously took a toll. She’s missing a fucking eye! At least let her heal a little bit, god man.”
“She’s a god, you’ve heard her. She heals fast. She’ll be alright. She needs to push a little longer, I know it’s not—”
“You’ve never liked her. I get it, really I do. A random girl shows up and her ex is the guy who tried to take over the world. But she needs longer than a few minutes of rest. If we woke her up, she’d say she’s fine and just push through it. I know better than anyone that she’ll just crash and burn. Now, I’m going to go stay in her room with Cho. If you get a few more brain cells, come visit.” Tony walked off.
“Tony, that’s not it at all.” Tony didn’t turn back, he simply continued the walk toward the tower.
“With all respect that is due, Captain.” Loki started, facing Steve. “She’ll need recovery before she is capable of helping in any way. Stark is correct, she’ll only pretend to be alright until she eventually tires herself out. Then she’ll be of no help at all. It may be best to ignore Tony’s offer of visiting. I’d rather not have to hear another one of those fights in the near future.” He too turned away, and Peter followed after them quickly.
Loki was still slightly numb from the shock of actually seeing you.
Were you okay?
Where have you been?
Why didn’t you go with him?
What happened to your face?
***
You sat up quickly, your hair sticking to your forehead. For a second, you panicked that you couldn’t see out of one eye until you remembered the past… however long it had been. You could feel your shirt sticking to your back. You tried your best to take deep breaths and figure out where the hell you were.
There were a few people sitting around the room.
“Hey, you’re alright, it’s us.” You heard from right next to you. It startled you for a second before you saw Tony’s face next to you. You let out a sigh of relief and slowly lay back down.
Peter and Loki were both asleep in chairs on the other side of the room. Peter had a blanket draped over him and a piece of paper crumpled in his hand.
“Hey, kid.” You laughed a bit.
“Tony I’ve been alive longer than you were a thought in the back of your parent’s head.”
“Okay, okay kid.” You smiled at him. You missed him.
“How long have you been waiting?”
He sighed and sat back in his chair. “I think you’ve been out for around 24 hours? Cap isn’t happy about waiting this long to talk to you about what happened.” You nodded, sensing there was more he wanted to say. “Listen, I understand wanting to be the hero, I really do, by why on Earth would you try to make us think you were dead?”
You sighed. “Because I’ve fought with my siblings before. Fights usually last a little while before my mother steps in and breaks it up. I thought that would happen. If it took more than two weeks… I was fully expecting not to be here. I’m sorry.”
He nodded a bit but stayed silent.
Loki’s eyes slowly opened in his chair before he stood up and walked over to you.
“Are you alright? Do you feel okay?” He was showing more emotion in front of Tony than he usually would, and you suspected he was just too tired to keep on his usual straight face.
“Loki, I’m fine.” You smiled at him. Tony stood up and let Loki pull his seat closer to your bedside. Tony went to wake up Peter before he dragged him out of the room. Peter seemed more than a little upset, but eventually nodded at Tony and followed him out of the room, offering you a cheerful smile as he walked away.
Loki wrapped his arms around you, pulling you close to his chest. He had about a million and thoughts rushing through his head at once, and he wanted to ask you all of them.
Wherewereyou?Whydidyouleavehim?Whathappenedtoyourface?Howareyoualive?Howdidyougetback?Wheredidyougetthatship?Whatsortofuniformwereyouwearing?Haveyoueatenrecently?Didyouevenhavewater?Howlongwereyouinspace?Wereyoutravelingthewholetimehewasgone?
But that didn’t matter right now. Whatever happened, you were at least alive. He’d take what he could get.
Pick up lines. | Ben Solo x Reader.
Request: Hi there! I'd like to request a resistance pilot! Ben Solo x either a princess or medic! Reader. Thank you so much if you decide to write this!
A/N: Helllooooo! this gave me so many Ideas so I’m two different fics for Princess and Medic reader! I just finished the medic one so I hope you enjoy!
Requested by: anon.
You've been a medic for the resistance for a long time, you wanted to help out as much as you can but you weren't a fighter and you didn't know how to fly a ship, so you figured that the best you could do was help them by staying at the base and help them with their injuries when they come back, and fighters having injuries wasn't rare when you're with the resistance,
"Y/n, you're early again." Your co-worker, Jade said as soon as you walked in.
"I have to check up on this guy who got shot pretty bad, Is he awake yet?"
"No, his wound's doing alright, I checked on it earlier." She said, "Amanda isn't coming in today, she uh- she left."
"Left?" You exclaimed. "That leaves us with-"
"-three medics left, the war's getting worse." A sigh escaped your lips and you put your bag down, you walked to one of the injured patients checking their vitals before moving to another one.
The rest of your co- workers came in and helped you with the rest, you all did your work for the day.
"Hey there Theyan, how's your arm doing?" You knelt in front of the youngest patient in the room, the kid was 11 years old, someone found him in he middle of the fight and brought him here.
"It doesn't hurt as much." He mumbled, "Do you know when he's coming to visit again?"
"Who?" You asked,
"The one who saved me, the tall mister with the long hair?" Your eyebrows shot up when you realized who he was talking about.
"Ah, him. He's currently not in the base but I'll tell him to come visit you when I see him alright?" He nodded at you, you gave him a smile and ruffled his hair.
----
"They need us outside! The fighters are back!" You heard someone call out, you immediately grab your kit and rushed out half of your co- workers trailing behind you. When you see the ships landing you approach the closest one you see, he had a deep wound on his stomach and a bleeding scratch on his shoulder.
"Sir, can you stand up?" You asked him, he gave you a tired nod. You throw his arm over your shoulder and helped him up so you can treat him properly inside, his dark hair covered his face and he had trouble breathing, once you arrived to the med bay you helped him sit down on one of the beds. "I need you to take your shirt off so I can clean your wound."
He did what you told him, you could hear the rest of the patients coming in making the whole room busy. "Lie down." you instructed.
He groaned as he let his body drop on the bed, his hair was finally out of the way , so you could see his face properly.
"Ben Solo." You said, surprised. "I thought your mother forbid you from going into fights." You said as you cleaned the wound on his stomach.
"She did, but I can't just stay behind as we loose our men fighting." He said, his voice was deep making you shiver. "I didn't know they had pretty medics in here."
You ignored his comment and continued your work, you felt his eyes on you even if you had finished patching him up, "You should rest, I'm going to have to leave you for a moment."
When you finished helping out as much as you could, you tried to check on him again but you were met by an empty bed, you groaned knowing that you might get scolded for this.
The next day, everything seemed to calm down a bit, some of your patients were discharged so you weren't that busy for the day. But you didn't expect for a visitor to come.
"Hey." You heard a voice behind you, you turned around to see Ben.
"Hey... does your wound hurt? I told you to get some rest." You said.
"No, I'm completely fine." He grinned. "Do you have a name-?"
"... everyone does-" he cut you off.
"Or can I call you mine?" You rolled your eyes at him.
"Did you come all the way here just to tell me that?" You tried to walk away but he kept up with you. "Someone's waiting for you here, that kid you saved?"
"Oh, how's he doing?" he asked.
"Follow me, he really wants to see you." He didn't say anything else and just continued walking with you, when you arrived Theyan's smile quickly appeared.
"Hey there." Ben greeted him, Theyan stood up and hugged him, you heard Ben groan as Theyan hit his injured stomach.
"Be gentle, he's injured and your arm's still healing." You reminded him, he quickly pulled away and mumbled an apology.
"Are you doing alright here?" Ben guided sat down on Theyan's bed, the kid sat beside him.
"Yeah! Miss Y/n takes really good care of me." Theyan gave you a big smile.
"Miss Y/n?" Ben turned his head to you and gave you a smile, your cheeks burned and you looked away to hide it. They talked for a while, about ships and how thankful Theyan was for Ben saving him, Theyan was disappointed that Ben had to go but he promised him that he'll visit again.
He went back the next day, and the day after that. And in those days, despite the corny jokes and pick up lines he tells you, you became closer.
----
The very next day he came with flowers and a bag of food.
"What's this for?" You asked him, while looking into the bag.
"Trying for you to get out on a date with me?" He said.
"We've only known each other for like a week." You gave him a pointed look.
"That's what dates are for right?" You sighed knowing that he wasn't going to let this down.
"I have work."
"No you don't,we have the whole thing handled!" Jade butted in, you widened your eyes at her and she just winked at you.
Ben raised his eyebrows at you, waiting fro an answer.
"Fine, but just for a moment!"
Ben told you to bring the food, you didn't really know where he was going to take you since you were in hiding in a planet filled with trees and nothing else. But you were surpried when you reached his ship, the one he's been using for fights.
"Do you like it?" He asked, making you look away from it.
"Yeah." You breathed out, you were pretty sure you were on a cliff, and you could see the whole place from up here, and everything seemed so small. "It's beautiful."
You ate inside the ship because it was too hot outside.
"This was the ship my father taught me to fly, it looks like it's almost falling apart but.. I can't let go of it." He said, the reason why he couldn't was probably because he lost his father a few years ago, you could never forget the look on His mother's face when she got the news.
"You really love flying don't you?"
"I do." He smiled. "Do you know how to fly?"
"Oh, I don't even know a lot about ships." You shook your head "We stayed inside when I was a kid, since they were always around and we were scared so I barely got to look at the sky. Until I finally had the guts to join here. " You recalled.
"Maybe I can teach you one day." He offered. You agreed and took the first bite out of the food.
"This is great." You complimented, "Did you cook this?"
"I did." he confirmed. "Mother taught me how to since she was quite busy back then, she wanted me to learn how to take care of myself when she's not around."
"And you never learned." you teased, referring to him going to battles without his mother's permission, he laughed at what you said.
"I did learn how to cook though." When you finished your meal and chatting while you did so, you both watched as the sun disappeared into the horizon. You looked at Ben beside you and just noticed how handsome he was, his hair matched his eyes and how his lips gracefully moves as he talked, you snapped out of your thoughts when he spoke.
"We're not socks-"
"-please don-"
"-But i think we'd make a great pair." You laughed at his pick up line, you fell silent after that, you were thinking of a pickup line as well, something that Jade probably told you about before.
"Did hurt?" You asked him out of blue.
"What did?"
"When you fell from heaven?" You gave him a smile that must've been like a grimace because of you trying to hide how cringy what you said was. " forget that happened, that sucks."
"It does, but every pick up line's supposed to suck, if it doesn't then it's not a pick up line at all." He chuckled. "We should probably head back, it's already dark."
-----
You were both standing in front of the door of the med bay, you didn't want to go in yet since you were sure you're going to get teased a lot by Jade.
"Uhm.. thank you for today. I enjoyed it." You smiled up at him and stared into his eyes, you noticed how mesmerizing it was.
"No problem." There was silence between the two of you, and you just looked at each other, as if you were waiting for something to just magically happen. "Kiss me if I'm wrong-"
You stopped him from talking by locking your lips together, his arms snaked around your waist. When you pulled away for breath he laughed.
"I must be terribly wrong to earn a kiss like that."
[multi-chap masterlist] [previous chapter - next chapter]
Kirishima groaned as he stood from his stool, he had just finished an excruciatingly long piece on one of his clients and finally they were done for the day. After cleaning the guy up and bandaging him Kiri gave him aftercare instructions then sent him on his way to the front.
He spent the next few minutes cleaning his tray, taking apart his machine and sanitizing the chair and tray, disposing of his used needles and ink cups. Cracking his neck and knuckles, Kiri set off for the kitchen to get a drink. When he rounded the corner his red eyes fell upon you at the counter, humming and bopping along while you were occupied with something.
Grinning, he walked to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water, after taking a sip of it he made his way behind you, hooking his head over your shoulder and cringing immediately.
“What the hell are you doing?”
You smiled and turned your head, looking him in the face. “Uh eating?”
“You know the entire point of pizza rolls is what's inside of them, so why are you squeezing all the shit out? Not to mention it looks disgusting!”
You elbowed him lightly causing him to grunt before placing himself beside you. There was a plate on the counter, full of cooked pizza rolls, the innards of them piled on one side and just the breaded shell of them piling up on the other.
“I’m not squeezing all of it out, just a little. These things are way overstuffed and that shit burns the sides of your mouth when they just explode. It’s called taking precautions!”
“It’s called wasting you weirdo.”
Your (e/c) eyes cut sideways at Kiri, making him smirk. He was soon gifted a middle finger and a friendly “fuck you Eijirou,” to which he just shrugged chuckled.
“Well only if you’re offering.”
A chuckle passed your lips before your teeth playfully tore into a pizza roll and you started to chew it lazily while crossing your eyes and moaning, body slumping over onto Kirishima and becoming like dead weight on him.
“Still wanna take that offer,” you muffled the question.
Kiri knew you were trying to look as idiotic as you could but it was also adorable. You started to eat the small items one by one, dramatically groaning and moaning, falling over the man and causing him to struggle and push you off until he just decided to wrap his arms around you. Kiri chuckled, teeth nipping and trying to steal one of the pizza rolls from your fingers. It got to the point where he was literally fighting you for one out from between your own teeth. Eventually the cheese spewed from the side of it and Kiri won the prize but he decided to rub the food across your cheek and smear its contents.
“Eww Kiri, stop,” you whined and tried to push him away.
Since your day out together, you and Kirishima had pretty much completely started over and were growing closer. He was becoming like one of the other guys to you, more touchy and comfortable, playful and friendly, just more fun to be around.
Of course he had his days sometimes but the good days finally started to outweigh the bad ones. You didn’t dread seeing him every day anymore, wondering what petty insults he’d spew out. Instead of insults the two of you would banter and joke, all in good fun. You were finally growing closer.
After Kiri had made enough of a mess on your face he let go and ate the remainder of the pizza roll still hanging from his teeth.You lightly punched his shoulder and grabbed a napkin to clean up with, feeling the oily substance clogging your skin.
“And you say I’m wasting.”
Kirishima chuckled and drank the rest of his water and tossed the bottle into the trash can. He grabbed a napkin himself and wet it with warm water then stood before you, his hands cupping your face.
“Here, let me help you,” he smiled.
You stood there and let him wipe your face clean, reaching a few pieces that were close to being in your hair and eyes, which were examining his face closely. The sharp edges of his jaw and chin, the plumpness of his lips. How deep the red color of his eyes really were and also that scar on his right one. Your hand came up, fingers lightly tracing it.
“I still find the story about this scar to be extremely funny and adorable.”
An amused look crossed Kiri’s face as he tossed the napkin in the trash can then took your hand that stroked the scarred flesh and lowered it down. He walked to lean back against the counter and you took a spot next to him, both of you crossing your arms and you laughing at the obvious size difference when the muscles in his arms flexed under the sleeves of his raglan shirt and his chest somewhat bulged. You tried your best to size up to him, earning a genuine laugh from Kiri himself. After you relaxed and shrunk back down, Kiri ran a hand through his spiky hair.
“You find me almost blinding myself as a toddler funny and adorable?”
“Okay when you put it like that of course not,” you replied, rolling your eyes with a smile.
Kiri smiled back, always amused to fuck with you, “Having a glass eye would’ve been badass though.”
“I guess it would be pretty hot, but I like your red eyes, so if it means anything, I’m glad you only got away with a scar.”
“Well aren’t you sweet,” Kiri cooed and looked at you with a grin.
Rolling your eyes again you lightly flicked his forehead and passed him to go to the fridge and got a bottle of water. After unscrewing the lid and taking a sip you wiped your mouth and stood before the red-head, a finger poking his chest.
“Eijirou, I’m always sweet, what are you talking about.”
“You’re like a damn sour patch kid little one,” he grinned and grabbed your hand, encasing it in his massive one and pulling you forward, “One minute you’re sweet yeah, but then you can turn sour, it may be hours later but it happens.”
Your head shook and your lips pouted, “Why I’d never,” you replied.
“Bullshit, I can see your horns showing right about -”
Not a second after the word left his mouth your hand holding the water bottle was coming up to be pressed to his neck, Kiri was fast though and grabbed your wrist before the ice cold bottle could touch his skin. His tongue clicked as he shook his head at you and you giggled.
“My point exactly you little fucking demon.”
“Pft, you act like I’m the only one with horns here, ” you chuckled and brought your free hand up to tousle one of Kiri’s spiked up horns, soon his other hand was gripping that wrist as well.
You gasped at the ferocity of his hold and the intense gaze he held. Your own eyes couldn’t leave his sharp crimson red ones. Suddenly you were now the one leaning back against the counter, the massive tattooed red-head standing before you, small wrists still tightly gripped in his giant hands. You swallowed nervously feeling how his aura changed drastically from playful to now predatory. Kirishima could tell how you were shrinking beneath him, not so playful anymore.
“Oh I’m completely aware of my own little one, and of how much bigger they are than yours,” he chuckled, the sound bringing a light to your eyes and coaxing out the girl inside of you that always loved to meet a challenge no matter what.
You hummed in reply, (e/c) eyes sharpening at Kiri and the tip of your tongue rolling between your canines as you smiled sinfully at him. Going to jerk your wrists from him once more, Kiri only tightened his grip but you pulled with so much force it brought him face to face with you, the tips of your noses brushing as you breathed upon each others mouths. He was right where you wanted him though. One of you were going to crack and it was going to be him.
“Scared Potter?” You questioned in a terrible British accent.
“Shut it Malfoy,” Kiri replied with a flawless British accent and smug look.
The two of you stared silently for a second before falling out into hysterics, laughing, snorting and cackling together. Tears were pricking your eyes and Kiri’s face fell to the crook of your neck as he tried to hide his own. He had let go of one of your wrists and casually your hand slid down his palm until his fingers clasped around it, holding it gently in his own.
It was the polar opposite of how he held your wrists. Instead of rough and fierce it was soft and tender, like there was a distinctly different way he needed to touch the two different areas. You smiled and his head pulled away from your neck. Kirishima looked down on you, freeing your other wrist so he could wipe the joyful tears from the corner of your eye. With a hum you melted into his hand.
The man wanted to verbally awe at how sweet and cute you were, your long lashes fluttering shut and your cheek nuzzling his palm that easily cupped the entire side of your face.
“You know you got that sour patch thing wrong Ei. Don’t you know your slogans, ‘first they’re sour then they’re sweet’,” you chuckled and the lids of your eyes opened slowly.
“I guess I did,” Kirishima replied almost mindlessly, letting his hand caress from your face and into your hair.
This wasn’t the first time Kiri had been caught up in you. Ever since making up, more and more he found himself slipping, letting you lure him in with those damned eyes, that sweet voice and spitfire attitude. He couldn’t say it out loud, not yet at least, but you were so perfect - perfect for him.
Through the weeks when he’d feel anxious or fed up with a client or sketch that wasn’t coming along, it was like you could sense his energy and just appear in his room to take his mind off things. Sometimes you’d waltz in wanting him to teach you drawing techniques or just to whine to him about how Sero and Bakugou were teasing you.
You calmed him. Especially on days after he’d come back from being an executioner. Even before you came along, on those days Kiri would always be in a mood, sometimes still high on the smell of blood and the adrenaline coursing through his veins. It felt like he was an animal, trying to shake it off while the inner beast craved for more. On those days he wouldn’t take customers, just shack up in his studio and draw. Now, on those days you’d find him, and just the sound of your voice calling out his name or your hand touching him would immediately put that beast to sleep like you were some kind of tamer - his tamer.
Without another thought Kirishima was bringing his face closer to yours, you looked unafraid, in fact it's like you were waiting for him. Your free hand came up, cupping his own that held your face and you breathed out his name in that soft and airy way that always made him melt.
“Shit, am I interrupting something?”
Kiri’s sharp red eyes glanced sideways to see Bakugou standing at the end of the counter he had you pressed against, your body went limp, a quiet whimper leaving your lips and tugging at his heart. Maybe the intrusion was for the best though. Slowly Kiri lowered your hand and his, but he wasn’t going to leave you hanging without some sort of kiss. With a soft smile he pressed a tender peck on your forehead, you hummed with content and smiled as he pulled back away.
“Alright princess, my turn,” Bakugou sneered playfully before grabbing your wrist himself and pulling you towards him roughly.
Kirishima rolled his eyes at the blonde who started to slather your cheek with playful nips and pecs, making you giggle and push away.
“Down boy, down!”
Chuckling, Bakugou calmed and released you so he could get himself a drink. Kirishima plopped down in one of the chairs by the table and asked what he was up to, to which he shrugged and sighed.
“Well I was going to see if y’all wanted to go ahead and close up. I’m about to blow my brains out with how fucking dead it’s been all day.”
You started to clean up your plate of pizza rolls and checked the time on the microwaves clock.
“Katsu, it’s only like six, we don’t close until ten on weekends.”
“We can close whenever we want to princess. Plus, there’s no point in just sitting on our asses.”
Kirishima huffed and crossed his arms behind his head, leaning back in his seat and letting his giant legs stretch out. “May be dead for you, I just got done with a four hour piece. Did you ever think that maybe people just don’t want to come see you Bakugou?”
“Fuck you shitty hair,” Bakugou snarled, crossing his arms and glancing over at you minding your own business. He grinned and clicked his teeth, tilting his head in your direction. “I know someone who does though.”
Your brow rose and you looked over to the blonde before pointing to yourself.
“Me?”
Bakugou chuckled and slid closer, “Yes you princess. Didn’t you want a piercing a few weeks ago? On that pretty little face.”
“I did! What were the ones you suggested again?”
He smirked and brought a hand up to cup your chin, his thumb ran over the plump flesh of your bottom lip then across the your cupid’s bow. Kiri’s red eyes narrowed while he watched Bakugou touching your lips, the same lips he should’ve been ravaging right now had he let himself go wild.
“I suggested a little monroe, right here,” Bakugou replied and poked right above your top lip, “And a nose piercing but like I said, your face is too fucking pretty do much more than that.”
“Oh yeah, well I think the monroe is really cute. I just don’t think I want a nose piercing though, and I don’t want a cliche belly button piercing either.”
You thought for a bit longer and Kiri watched closely, Bakugou shrugged and took a drink of his water. Your fingers snapped and you beamed.
“My nipples!”
Bakugou spit out his water, at the same time him and Kirishima both let out a shocked, “What?”
“You heard me! I want my nipples pierced! I think they look pretty good on some girls and with my quirk I won’t have to suffer for months, waiting on them to heal.”
Kiri shook his head and stood from his seat, “What’s with you and always wanting something that requires you to be practically topless huh?”
“I’m confident in my skin Kiri, there’s no shame in that.”
“Yeah Red, stop body shaming our girl here, if she wants to pierce her tits then let her pierce her tits!”
Kirishima glared at Bakugou.
“Shut the fuck up, I know what you’re doing!” The red head looked at you, his eyes pleading, “Look if that’s what you want then go for it, but maybe I can take you to another place?”
“Ei, why would I go anywhere else when we have one of the best of the best right here. Plus, I trust Katsuki.”
The blonde gave Kiri a shit eating grin from behind you, soon his arms were around your waist and his head was hooked over your shoulder and he pressed a kiss to your jaw.
“Yeah Ei, she trusts me. You shouldn’t want anyone else doing this for her anyway. I’d fucking murder someone before I let her go to another place.”
“See, he’s got my back Eijirou, I’ll be fine.”
Kiri groaned and went to try and plead more but you were quickly dragging Bakugou by the hand out of the kitchen and to his studio. The blonde flipping Kirishima off and sticking out his tongue. With a growl Kiri took off after you, following into the studio.
“This will be fun and I’ll have some new work to show off to the guys!”
“You’re not going to be flashing your shit around here,” Kirishima sternly stated.
You chuckled and took a seat on the piercing chair. Kiri followed like a puppy, right by your side and not looking to leave. Your hand grabbed his own and you smiled.
“I was talking about my lip piercing. Don’t worry Ei, the others will be just between me and certain special people.”
“Me, I’m special people!” Bakugou grinned as he pulled out all the tools needed.
Needles, jewelry, napkins, gloves, a marker, alcohol pads, etc. Bakugou mentioned he’d do the lip piercing first since it wouldn’t take long and was the easiest.
You sat and let him disinfect your upper lip. His face extremely close to your own as he used a marker and carefully marked the perfect spot to place the piercing. You turned to look at Kiri, asking his opinion. Shortly he smiled and nodded, saying that it looked perfect. Your small hand squeezed his and you turned to look at Bakugou again.
“These will be cold,” he mentioned and held up some small clamps.
Using them, he took your lip between them, causing you to gasp. The marked spot was easily visible through the hole of the clamps and they securely held your lip still. His other hand reached over to his tray and grabbed the piercing needle, placing the tip of it right on the inside of your lip. Your eyes crossed as you tried to look down at the clamps. Bakugou had to stifle down a chuckle from how dumb you looked.
“Okay, you’re gonna feel a pinch but it won’t last long. Take a deep breathe in and - “
Right on cue with your exhale Bakugou pushed the needle through the flesh, your eyes blinked and hand squeezed Kiri’s again at the pinch the blonde mentioned and you hissed but the discomfort was extremely short lived.
You watched Bakugou smile proudly and praise you with a, “good girl.”
He threaded the end of the jewelry on the end of the needle then pushed it all the way through, placing the used tool on his tray and grabbing the studded top of the jewelry and twisting it on top of the piece he was holding in your lip. The process was over as fast as it had begun. Bakugou grabbed a napkin and dabbed the small amount of blood clean before he stood back and grabbed a small mirror.
“Take a look princess.”
You grabbed the mirror and smiled upon seeing the shimmering stud placed perfectly above your top lip, resembling a much more extravagant beauty mark.
“Aww, it’s so cute Katsu!”
After handing the mirror back you quickly healed the piercing and wiggled your lips around and giggled at the weird sensation of metal in your mouth. Looking sideways your eyes were seeking approval from the Kirishima.
Kiri smirked and poked at the piercing, “It suits you little one ... alright that’s it. Let’s close the shop now!”
“Eijirou,” you giggled and whined as he tried to tug you out of the chair.
Kirishima sighed defeatedly, “Are you sure you want this?”
“Yes I’m sure. What, do you think they won’t look good on me or something?”
Red eyes rolled and Kirishima tried his hardest not to even vividly picture what you’d look like with those sinful piercings or the things he’d crave to do.
“That’s not it at all, they’ll look great. It’s just ... they’re a lot more painful than what you just got.”
“Hey shit for brains, stop trying to scare her. I know what I’m doing, I’ve pierced plenty of tits in my career. Look princess, do you want this?”
You looked at Bakugou and nodded eagerly without even thinking.
“Alright, then get your sweet ass up and go strip for me.”
Kirishima glared at Bakugou and if looks could kill the blonde would be way past dead.
Your body hopped down from the piercing chair and you pat Kiri’s chest as you walked by him, Bakugou playfully smacked your ass moving you along towards the divider that was located in the corner of the room without another word.
The two men stared at each other, Bakugou with the smuggest of smug looks and Kiri seething with envy.
“You’re fucking enjoying this aren’t you,” Kiri growled.
“Oh you have no idea, now if you’d kindly leave, you know shop policy Red. These types of piercings are private.”
Kirishima looked over to the divider you were standing behind, his jaw clenching at the thought of what was about to happen. He didn’t not want you to get the piercings, he just didn’t want you to get them from Bakugou.
His friend was very cunning and the two of you already flirted way more than you and he did. In fact the two of you were way more touchy and sexual in your interactions. This situation would only rile Bakugou up even more, Kiri knew it but then again he had no control over you, no claim to you.
You were free to act on your own accord. It was times like these where Kirishima would second guess his actions and be more inclined to finally just put aside his stupid ways and confess his feelings, if it meant having you to himself and only him. But if he did that right now it would partly be for the wrong reasons.
Finally Kirishima decided he’d confess to you, but in due time.
To do it out of spite or sheer jealousy would be ignorant. You were both in a good place with each other now, sometimes taking things slowly was for the best. Kirishima wanted you, more than he fucking wanted life itself, but he had already fucked up too much and he was trying not to do it all over again, plus you still needed to know about the beast he kept caged until a certain phone call would release it.
With a sigh he shoved Bakugou out of his way and slowly stormed out of the room without a word, closing the door shut behind him.
Your head poked out from behind the divider at the sound, eyes looking at the door then to Bakugou who was gathering all the utensils and tools needed for your next piercing. Your lips jutted out in a pout briefly at Kiri’s disappearance before you sighed and crossed your arms over your chest, walking out from behind the divider and back to the piercing seat.
Bakugou turned his head to glance at you from his peripheral and smiled. He glanced back at his utensils and went about explaining the process to you. How all his tools were extremely and thoroughly sterilized. His hands held up two separately packed needles, one for each breast, a packaged set of clamps, and two barbells for the jewelry. There was also a type of jelly the needles would be dipped in the ease the process and a shorter set of barbell jewelry.
“These are longer than usual ones but its to allow room for swelling, but after you’ve healed yourself I can replace them with normal length ones. Of course, it being a piercing, it’s going to be uncomfortable but trust me it’s not unbearable. Do you have any other questions before we get started?”
You nervously chuckled, arms still crossed over your chest and a hand reaching to scratch the side of your neck. “Uh - do they have to be ... h-hard?”
Bakugou smirked, watching your face blush red from the question.
Usually you were a raging ball of witty sexual remarks, confident and not in the least bit bashful. This look though was appealing to the blonde. He shrugged his shoulders and clicked his tongue as he picked up the package with the clamps in it.
“Nah princess, that's what these are for. They hold the nipple in place, they aren’t the most comfortable thing and they’re probably the most painful part of the process but they help as a guide for the needle.”
You seemed to deflate with a sigh and nodded.
“But if you really wanted me to, I could tease them for you, free of charge.”
You chuckled and went to playfully kick at the cocky man, but he caught your ankle and tugged harshly, pulling your body down the chair and making your back come into contact with it. You gasped when he was suddenly before you and between your legs, all at once you were reclined back at an angle and almost shell shocked from your mind trying to catch up. Red eyes glared intently at you, full of fire and pride.
“Or do you want to do that for me yourself?”
“You fucking wish Katsuki,” you grinned underneath him.
Bakugou’s face lowered and his nose brushed along your cheek as his warm breath fanned your ear before his teeth nipped at it. A low chuckle left his lips and it caused a shudder to ripple through you.
“You fucking bet I do. I still haven’t had my fun with you yet princess, you said to name a time and place right?”
“Katsu,” you breathed out through gritted teeth, his own dragging down your cheek to take hold of it. Your eyes glazed over and stared into his own.
“Hmm,” he grunted and released your flesh then let his tongue lightly lap at the teeth marks, his hand squeezing your thigh. “What if I said right now, right here? Make a filthy little mess of you on my chair.”
You started to breathe heavily, Bakugou’s hand on your thigh traveling up. Slowly your arms started to uncross and fall to your sides, hands gripping at the leather of the chair. Bakugou looked down at your bare chest now littered with black ink, a wicked smile crossing his handsome face. A breathy ‘fuck’ left his lips and his head lowered slowly and you screwed your eyes shut.
There was a fire building low in your gut, skin hypersensitive and thoughts nothing but mush. Out of nowhere something extremely cold was wiped across one of your nipples, causing you to flinch and all arousal immediately disappear.
“What the fucking hell Bakugou!”
“Oh I’m sorry princess, were you expecting something else,” he chuckled as you looked down to see him wiping a now warm alcohol pad across your sensitive bud.
“Fuck you,” you rolled your eyes, head falling back against the chair.
“All good things come to those who wait, don’t worry, I’ll fuck you sooner than later. But for now, let me do my job and make these pretty things even better!”
Kiri sat impatiently in the kitchen, a hardened finger carving a small line into the table from constantly moving it back and forth while waiting for your piercing session to be over.
A few more minutes and he was jumping up from his chair when he heard the door down the hall opening, your precious giggle echoing down and into the kitchen. Soon you stood before him, a smile on your face that now gleamed even more from the jewelry that adorned your top lip. Kirishima smiled back and you walked closer to stand before him.
His hand cupped your cheek, relief washing over him to see you were free from any telling marks and free from the studio room period.
“You heal yourself?”
You nodded with a grin and grabbed at your breasts to squeeze lightly, “I’m all good Ei, feels perfectly normal and pain free. Well - I mean it doesn’t feel normal anymore, it’s a different feeling but you get what I’m saying.”
The red head chuckled, his thumb nudging at the piercing on your face. “I really do like this one, it’s cute.”
“Thanks Eijirou, I’m really glad you like it. Play your cards right and maybe one day you can see the others.”
Kirishima went to reply but soon Bakugou was beating him to the punch and yelling out your name from down the hall. You both looked to see his spiky blonde head peeking out from the doorway of his room.
“Remember I told you we’d go out when we got back from that deal?”
There was a light in your eye, body turning to face away from Kiri and to Bakugou.
“Yeah, why?”
“What do you say we go to the club tonight?”
Kiri silently groaned behind you, nostrils flaring. It was like he couldn’t get a fucking break today. Bakugou grinned smugly at his friend, knowing he had been cock blocking him at almost every corner. You nodded at Bakugou then turned back around to Kiri and took his hand.
“You’ll come to right? We can all go out together!”
It felt as if the heavens had opened up and an angel was finally giving Kirishima an opening, a break! That angel being you with that perfect smile and those pleading eyes, pleading for him.
Kirishima smirked and looked up at Bakugou who was just shaking his head, smile still on his face and not even phased that you were including everyone else.
Fingers came up to cup your chin, looking up, red eyes looked back down and a sweet peck was pressed to your cheek before a sharp toothed grin sparkled.
“Of course little one, whatever you want.”
BTS reacting to you coming home with bruises after a fan attacked you.
pairing: bts x reader fandom: bts warnings: language ; blood genre: angst ; fluff
a/n: I hope this is what you wanted my love ♥
ask box | masterlists | faq | twitter | ko-fi | REQUESTS ARE CLOSED.
kim seokjin
Jin was humming one of their songs while cooking, carefree until Taehyung entered the kitchen.
“Hyung. You need to come with me. Right now.”
The tone in itself was alarming, but Jin just dried his hands and followed him slowly. Up until he saw you with a bloody nose. Then he ran.
“What happened?!” he knelt down in front of you, inspecting your face, but when you flinched as he touched your nose, he immediately pulled his hands back.
“One of your fans thought talking shit about me in my face would be a good idea.”
“She.. punched you?”
“What? No. I punched her. She started crying and then one of her friends hit me in the face. But trust me, compared to her I look good,” you grinned proudly, “Didn't know my fist was this strong.”
You thought he might be proud as well, but Jin was mainly concerned. Which, to be fair, was probably the more logical reaction to all of this. The fact that a fan came up to you and insulted you only showed that they were getting more upfront about their hate towards you and that worried him immensely.
“I'll take you to a doctor and no, we're not discussing this, (Y/N).”
You let out a huff and stomped after him with a pout.
min yoongi
“Are you fucking serious, (Y/N)?” Yoongi walked into the living room, his feet quicker than usual.
“Listen to me, SHE came up to ME and she slapped me. All I did was punch her back.”
“You punched her?”
“Fuck yeah. I punched her right in the face and I'm pretty sure I broke her nose and that bitch deserved it. Like, what the hell was I supposed to do? She comes up to me, slaps me, insults me and tells me that I'm stealing her 'oppar',” you purposefully pronounced it wrong, then continued, “I'm not letting myself be treated like this.”
Namjoon wanted to tell Yoongi that how you handled the situation was wrong, but Yoongi just.. smiled. Proudly.
And as Namjoon pulled him away, your boyfriend couldn't help but give you a thumbs up, because..
That's his girl right there.
jung hoseok
“No, no, no, no,” Hoseok pulled you close, “I'm so sorry this happened. I'll make sure the person responsible for this will be held accounted for it.”
“Nah, don't worry about it,” you smiled a little, Hoseok wiping away the blood on your lip, “She got what she deserved.”
“What.. what do you mean?”
“Well, let's just say I.. snatched her wig.”
You didn't even mean to pull that hard, but you suddenly had a lot of hair in your hand and.. well.. she had a lot less on her head.
“You ripped out her hair?!”
“I wanted to punch her, but you always say that you hate violence, so for your sake, I settled for ripping out her hair. Don't thank me,” you wiggled your eyebrows.
And Hoseok wasn't sure whether he should be glad or worried.
kim namjoon
“Listen to me, my girlfriend got attacked, physically attacked by a fan today,” Namjoon was on the phone with Bang. And while he was usually always very respectful, today he’s had enough.
“Yes. The fan slapped her. And (Y/N) made sure the girl had to go to the hospital.”
“Wh..- What?” Namjoon turned around to look at you and you tried to look all innocent.
It was only later that night that you came clean.
“What the hell was I supposed to do? I defended myself. I took a self-defense class a few weeks ago, I put it to good use.”
“Pretty sure self-defense is about getting away from your attacker, not putting them in a hospital.”
“I got angry, okay? She said offensive things, she attacked me, I just lost it.. and she deserved it, okay?”
“(Y/N),” Namjoon sighed, “This isn't the right way..”
“Maybe.. but it damn well felt great to punch her in the face.”
park jimin
“I'm so sorry, Jagi,” Jimin was on the verge of tears as he looked at your bruised face, “This never should have happened.”
“Hey, stop this,” you smiled a little as you brushed over his cheek, “I'm fine, really. She's the one that was crying on the floor because of me.”
“What.. did you do?”
“Uh, maybe we shouldn't talk about that. I don't want you to look at me differently.”
Yeah, that was probably for the best.
Not that Jimin felt any sympathy for that girl, but still..
kim taehyung
“I told you not to go out.. this is exactly what I told you would happen!” Taehyung inspected your face, but you pushed away his hands.
“And I told you that I could take care of myself and that's exactly what I did. I won't let some thirteen year old girls intimidate me, Taehyung. Yes, they all started hitting me, but I made sure that they'll think twice about doing that to somebody else ever again. They all look worse than me.”
“How did you even manage that?” he put bandages on your arms, “It was four against one.”
“What can I say? I'm secretly a ninja,” you chuckled.
“Mhm.. a ninja with hello kitty band aids on her arm.”
“That's my aesthetic, so don't judge me.”
jeon jeongguk
Jeongguk didn't say anything for a long time, he just waited for Jin to patch you up.
You didn't have to go to a hospital, not even to a doctor. There were just some bruises and a few scratches here and there.
It was only when all the other boys were gone and you and him were alone that he asked: “Did you punch her in the face?”
“Fuck yes.”
And then he nodded with a grin, “Good.”
No sympathy for people that thought messing with his girl was a good idea.
Covered in Mud
——
The sky had been threatening to spill all day, all gray clouds offset by deep threatening purples. Nobody could predict when it would happen, but when it did, the clouds seemed to crack open like an egg, coating the Edge in a sudden shower of hailstones, rain, wild gusts of wind and crackling peals of thunder.
It was a truly impressive act of Thor, Astrid thought, drinking from her mug under the Clubhouse roof she had mended and patched herself before the rain season came. Not a drop so far. She was feeling a little smug, especially because Hiccup had waved away all her reminders to fix his own roof in a timely manner and was now grumpily carrying in an armload of drenched blueprints, notebooks and maps to dry out in front of the fire.
Toothless sneezed as he followed after, ears flat and drenched to his skin. More wet scrolls were sticking out of the saddle bags and Astrid came over to help unload them and spread them out.
“No, no, I got this,” Hiccup sighed. “I brought it on myself, you were right. I should have fixed the roof.”
“I didn’t say anything,” Astrid said.
“You didn’t have to. I can tell you’re dying to say ‘I told you so’ because that’s the expression you always make when you’re about to.” Hiccup’s tone was playful but also not, and Astrid tried her best to navigate the tricky waters of what he really meant to say.
Passive-aggressiveness, Ruff had supplied once, when both of them were in their cups and Astrid had found herself venting. It was nice to have a word to it, but what an oddly perfect word for every situation with Hiccup she seemed to find herself in lately.
Right now he either wanted her to reassure him and apologize, or go back to her warm drink and leave him alone. Neither option seemed ideal, but she was saved from the guesswork by a frustrated groan from Snotlout who tossed some dry wood and a pile of bundled kindling out of his cloak onto the floor.
Lout was wet, but a few hours worth of firewood had been rescued thanks to his quick thinking and the sacrifice of his cloak. Grumbling, he started stacking it into a pile. Astrid gladly went to help with that chore instead, and Hiccup huffed. He’d wanted her to choose the first option apparently, but it was no good to backtrack now - no matter what she did, it would become an argument later that everyone would pretend they hadn’t heard. She didn’t engage, playing dumb to his irritated glances and once the wood was stacked, she checked on the stew.
He was having trouble keeping one of the maps from rolling back up instead of laying flat. Astrid knew better than to suggest getting small stones from the potted flowers outside to weigh down the corners. It would be insulting somehow.
“What did you make for dinner?” Hiccup asked, just giving up and holding down the corners with his hands. He was apparently going to stay like that for a while.
Astrid sighed inwardly. “Yak stew.” Hiccup didn’t acknowledge the answer or look up at her, seemingly deep in thought and scowling.
“I’m tired of yak. When can we have boar or venison again?” Snotlout butted in and really, honestly, bless him. Astrid hadn’t wanted to hear Hiccup’s attempts to dodge out of eating any. He never seemed to be hungry on days when it was her turn to cook.
“When the rains let up, we can go hunting. But yak meat is what we have the most of.”
“Who first decided to eat a yak anyway?” Ruff asked, walking in with Fishlegs. “They’re like giant adorable sheepdogs with horns. That you can practice braiding on. They just stand there and let you. What ‘honorable viking’ decided to ‘hunt’ that?”
“Well, sometimes during famines when there’s not a lot of food to hunt -“ Fishlegs started, until Ruffnut gave him a withering look. “Oh you weren’t really asking, never mind.”
He was carrying a Maces and Talons board and the rule book. It had become necessary to have the rule book present; while playing, the twins liked to bend and tweak the boundaries of every single one. Astrid had to admit, it was thrilling to watch. Hiccup might even forget his bad mood and have a good time.
The only one missing now was Tuff.
When dinner was ready, and had been roasted thoroughly as well as stewed, Tuff had still not shown up.
Astrid left it up to the others to serve themselves and carried a covered bowl for Tuff toward his hut. It wasn’t like him to be late for dinner unless he was dramatically late. She relaxed when she saw a candle on in his window and the chimney putting out smoke.
“Hey, Tuff. Get attacked by a wolf or something?” Astrid asked automatically when he opened the door. She’d said it carelessly, an inside joke between all of them, but Tuff’s appearance took her aback.
He was a wall of mud with eyes and stiffening braids. He currently held a peeping ball of damp fluff in a towel draped over his hand - apparently trying to dry off the chicks before seeing to himself.
The storm had caught everyone at least a little off guard but ... “Why are you covered in mud?” Astrid asked.
If Tuff could have looked any angrier, the mud surely would have baked and fallen off him in crisp pieces.
“Because that ... that absolute waste of feathers-“ he started, absolutely fuming.
“Peep,” the chick helpfully interrupted.
“Excuse me - because your father,” Tuff said instead to the chick, voice dripping with scorn. “Would not come inside when he was directed to before the storm hit, oh no - Fustercluck knows best! Fustercluck thinks a rickety old toolshed is the best place to keep his chicks safe during a storm like this! And so he led me on a merry f-“
“Peep.”
“-cking chase around in the mud with half of you guys unhelpfully following him, until I finally grabbed him so you would follow us all inside.” Tuff sighed dramatically and Astrid shook her head, grinning. He was more a mother hen than Chicken. It was endearing.
“Imprinting’s a fine concept and all, really,” Tuff said, like he was letting her in on a secret. “Less fine when there’s a complete doorknob standing there on hatching day. Sorry, I won’t be hanging with you guys tonight, A. I gotta get them dried off so they don’t catch colds. I can’t come to dinner looking like this anyway.”
“So did you let your dumbass rooster inside or did you throw him back out to stay in his shed?”
“Oh I wanted to, believe me.” Tuff made a face and jerked his thumb over his shoulder. There, on a perch made for two, Fustercluck and Chicken were preening each other’s feathers and burbling lovingly. “She wouldn’t have it.”
And he wasn’t anywhere near that heartless. Astrid knew that better than he seemed to himself. She came in, set the bowl on the table and picked up a towel. “Tell you what. After we dry off the chicks, I’ll help you get all this mud off you.”
“Oh. Okay, thanks,” Tuff said, offering her a smile and a different wet chick.
They got them clean and fluffed up and Chicken accepted them into her nest for the night, preening them the rest of the way dry. Tuff closed them in and noticed the bowl on the table. “Could I have some of your soup if you aren’t going to eat it? It’s going to get cold.”
Astrid smiled. “It’s yours, I brought it for you. In case you were sick or reading or decided to paint a wall.”
“You did?” Tuff didn’t give her time to take the offer back, picking the bowl up and draining it. He loved it when people cooked for him - Ruff had told her that.
She set a pot of water on his stove to heat up and looked for towels while he shed all but his leggings. He was trying to tie his hair back and out of the way but his braids were heavy and caked.
Astrid took over, making him sit in a chair and lean his hair back into a basin of clean warm water. Another pot of water was set to warm up on the fire. Poor Tuff would need more - probably most of it for his hair.
He sighed blissfully as the first soak drew the worst of the dirt and mud away, turning the basin water immediately opaque. “It feels like the fifty pound Night-terror napping on my head just woke up and flew away.”
“Yeah, I bet. This is mostly clay. You guys should put a potters wheel in your hut.”
“I’m not going to make anything resembling a normal piece of crockery,” he vowed.
“That’s alright. I’m sure Ruff won’t be making anything resembling a non-offensive piece of crockery,” Astrid said, and Tuff laughed.
He helped her change out the water to do his hair once more until it was closer to its normal golden color. A swim in the morning would help get the rest of it clear.
Astrid dabbed a towel into hot water and gently ran it over the patches of mud on his skin that had caked dry. When it was softened, she wiped the dirt away just as gently. Tuff followed her motions, getting his chest and arms and legs while she got his back.
Tuff sighed softly when they were finished, his exhaustion and relief tangible. “Thanks, A,” he said. “Did you have dinner yet?”
“No, but it’s fine. I’m sure there’s plenty of yak stew left over,” she said wryly.
“Stew would be cold by now. Here.” He got up, and headed to his pantry. He gifted her with a plate of cracked walnuts, dried apricot slices, goat cheese, and a few hard boiled eggs.
All put together, it looked like a feast for some warrior elf maiden traveling Midgard. Astrid smiled and cleaned her plate of everything that had been offered, eating slowly while Tuff - clean and in much better spirits - laughingly recounted his madcap adventure of chasing a very stubborn rooster all across a muddy, slippery, hole-filled yard. Barf and Belch had dug a man-sized pit earlier to hide their favorite bone and it had filled up quickly with a foamy slurry of mud and rainwater. Tuff had apparently forgotten this and went down with a splash.
Astrid couldn’t stop laughing - not at his story but at the way he told it. “I wish I could have seen that! You probably looked like some ravenous troll clawing its way out of Niflheim - no wonder the chickens freaked out and ran away! I would have run too, if you’d just popped out of the ground! And with all that lightning and thunder -“
“You would have run from a troll? You?” Tuff scoffed. “That poor thing would have been tied to a chair in an hour, begging you to call his mother to come pick him up.”
She cackled and rubbed at her cheeks, which were seriously aching by now. Astrid hadn’t laughed this hard in a while. It was definitely good for her.
They said their good nights a little while after Ruff came back to the hut, not drunk but definitely not sober. “You guy’s missed a really dumb boring match in which everyone followed the same dumb boring rules.” She stared at her brother, still casually shirtless, only wearing his leggings. “And apparently you guys played strip-poker instead. And my brother ... lost? Won? Who knows. Not asking ‘cause I’m gonna forget everything in the morning anyway!” Ruffnut stomped cheerfully up to the loft to pass out across her own bed.
Tuff still had his face in his hands by the time her snores drifted down and Astrid was beet red, snickering helplessly.
“On that note, we should probably get to bed too,” she finally managed, wiping her eyes.
Tuff nodded, getting up. “Yeah, I’ll walk you to the door. Thanks for everything. This was a good night.” He grinned at her, soft and hopeful and Astrid leaned in without thinking, and kissed the corner of his mouth.
She pulled back and they stared at each other, neither one wanting to blink first.
“Goodnight,” Astrid managed to squeak out finally, because her mom had told her that shield maidens never started what they couldn’t finish. “See you tomorrow?”
Tuff hand went up to touch where she had kissed him and then he seemed to remember himself and dropped his arm down. “Yeah. S-Swimming, right?” It was an offer to stay friends, if she thought she had made a mistake.
“Sure, I’ll dress for it. See you at dawn?”
“Yeah.” Tuff stared at her from the doorway and she really wanted to kiss him again. Astrid thought of Hiccup still trying to dry his papers and feeling slighted that she hadn’t stayed to help him. She weighed the pros and cons of tipping her boat over and refusing to navigate anymore of his confusing waters ever again.
Happily, Tuffnut leaned forward and caught her lips, solving the equation.
The Lady Regent
The cold, crisp Alteraci morning air whipped across Toby’s face and rose goosebumps across his skin as he stepped through his portal into the small town of Grafenwohr.
He took a moment to lean his head back and breath in through his nostrils, free of the scent of the Stormwind canals or the general sense of rot that lurked in Duskwood. The air dried and began to freeze the inside of his nose as he inhaled, but a small smile curved up the side of one face.
Home.
It felt strange, even now. He waved in passing to some of the people—his people, he corrected himself. Thanks in large part to the actions of the 47th, the town had begun to thrive. Construction had slowed; the small wooden houses largely put together, the inn half-finished, but the icy mountain winters of Alterac did not lend themselves well to construction.
That said, the curls of smoke rising from the chimneys, and the livestock in the yards, bespoke of a town well-fixed to survive the harsh winter and begin anew in the spring. The largesse donated to the town by Lord Edain had supplemented the initial “anonymous” donation—true to his word to his brother-in-arms, Toby hadn’t even told his mother that the seed money for all this had come from Corporal Silvermoon absolutely pasting him in the dueling tournament, then turning around and sending his winnings to help the recovery.
The memories of that terrible night had begun to fade. Every time he walked past the half-built inn, he heard the screams of the infected as they burned alive a little bit less. He’d done it—had to do it—and he’d felt the pain of that since. But those actions…had led to this, and the current state of Grafenwohr was starting to look like the old stories his father had once told him.
He approached the manor hall—the residence of Lord Farnal, and the center of business for the town. His home. Repairs to the hall had been minimal; the stonework where the prior Lord Farnal had smashed through the wall as an undead abomination had long since been patched. Toby and his mother had, at first, attempted to get the new townsfolk to ignore the Hall in favor of their own housing, but…they’d insisted.
The only stone building in town, the manor hall flew the sigil of House Farnal once more, the bird-in-flight in red-on-orange. Where once Toby had flinched away from his house sigil—the thing had stood for little more than arrogance and empty pride most of his life—he now smiled to see it flying, pronouncing to anyone who would look that this sleepy little mining town lived once more.
His smile was dashed as Frau Gutlein emerged from the Hall just as he approached. The older woman froze as she saw Toby, her eyes fixed in frozen hatred for a moment. “My lord,” she said, though her voice carried no joy at the words. She bowed, and stepped to the side, but let her cold courtesy pronounce her true feelings more loudly than any verbal protestation.
Toby didn’t blame her. One of the only three survivors of the first wave of settlers, Frau Gutlein had been the only one to choose to return to Grafenwohr with the second wave. She’d lost her husband and two children to the events of that October night—and while the plague of the Scourge had signed their death warrants, it was Toby’s own hand that had caused their deaths. Deaths that, no doubt, had been filled with terror and panic as Toby’s conjured fire consumed the old inn and choked them in hot smoke and despair.
Shame.
Every time Toby looked at Frau Gutlein, he felt the shame of it. He shouldn’t—all the arguments he’d made to Eastwind and Mac’aSionnach held true. But even so—those were his people, and he’d condemned them to a horrible death. And he suspected that, to Frau Gutlein, none of the success that the town had seen since would ever override the fact that he’d personally burned her family alive.
So he simply nodded to the woman without comment. No words could fix that gulf—and trying would be simply picking the scab off a wound, so he let it lie.
Instead, he simply walked past the grief-hardened woman and into the warm, stone hall.
“Tobias!” said his mother as he rounded the corner into the great hall. The Lady Petra Farnal had lost some weight since leaving the small Stormwind apartment. She looked…healthy. Vibrant. Alive. As though she’d spent her time in Stormwind in a sort of torpor, and had only now awoken.
“Hello, mader,” said Toby. “It’s good to see you again.”
“Come, come, sit down.” She waved off a couple of assistants who’d been huddling about her, examining plans for…something. Toby couldn’t tell from where he stood.
He chuckled, then shook his head. “Can’t stay long,” he says. “The regiment is still on alert back in Stormwind…there’s things happening back in Duskwood, and we’re working on…well, stuff. I’ve been promoted, though. I’m commissioned as an Knight, now.”
“Oh!” said Petra. “Oh, my Tobias—a Knight at last. Your father, so proud would he be, he always wanted—”
“I…know what he always wanted,” said Toby quietly. “And likely he’d just find some new way to be disappointed in me now.”
His mother frowned. “You—do not know the whole truth of your father, Tobias. All of this—all because of him. A good man, he was, and I am not wishing to hear you speak ill of him, regardless of the way he ended.”
“I killed him, Mom. That’s how he ended.”
“That is not I read the report, Tobias. He was dead before your army was fighting him, yes? You…you killed the thing that killed him. You were not his murderer, Tobias; you were his rachsucher.”
Toby chuckled, then nodded. “I…suppose, Mom,” he said, then opened his mouth to speak.
“Ah!” said Petra before he could speak. “Come, come, I have gifts for to give you.” She bustled past him, grabbing his hand before he could get a word in or share any of his news. “So many Winterveils, with only a sweater and an orange! Do you remember, Tobias, when you were nine and begged and begged for your father and I to gift you a puppy?”
“Um…” said Toby, not entirely sure where she was going. “Yeah? I mean, it seemed like a good idea at the time…” “Well!” said the Lady Regent of Grafenwohr. “I knitted you a sweater like normal, of course, but finally I am able to be fulfilling this wish.” “Mom, that was twelve years ago,” Toby said, following his mother out of the Hall and to the right, passing behind the large buildings to a fenced-in area with a small shelter built into it. Petra swung open a gate. “I don’t reall---oof,”
A rather large mass of fur, muscle, and tongue launched from the shelter, catching Toby in the upperlegs with a unexpected, meaty shoulder-block and sending him sprawling. The massive beast immediately positioned himself over Toby and lay atop him, then bathed his face with a big, swabbing tongue.
“Toby, this is Rolf,” said his mother in an amused voice. “I think he likes you.”
“He’s heavy,” Toby said. “Where did you find this monster?” Rolf gave a little whurf, almost a half-bark, then settled his giant head down atop Toby’s.
“He’s an Alteraci rescue dog,” said Lady Farnal. “If stranded you are in the snow, he’s your best bet at staying warm. When he’s sent out on a rescue mission, or at formal occasions, it’s traditional to put a cask of mulled brandy about his neck.”
Toby chuckled as best he could under the mass of dog. “Well,” he says. “He is warm, I’ll give him that.” He reached up to scratch behind Rolf’s ear, and the dog pressed his massive head against Toby’s hand in grateful appreciation. “Nice to meet you, Rolf. Though I think you’ll have to stay here, mostly; I can’t exactly deploy with a massive dog in tow.”
“Ah, happy I would be for the company,” said Petra. “Since I am without my son.”
Toby chuckled again. “So…how do I get him to…”
“Rolf! Aufstehen!” said Petra in a sharp, commanding tone. The big dog obligingly stood and rumbled to the side, allowing Toby to stand…and then immediately leaned his massive weight against Toby’s leg.
“All right,” said Toby with a little smile at all the canine affection. “All right, I like him. Good boy, Rolf,” he says.
“Yes. Now, next question—when am I going to meet this freundin of yours?” asked Petra.
“Well, actually—” Toby said, but couldn’t get a word in edgewise with his mother.
“You’ve been seeing this girl for months, now, and you do not bring her for to meet your mader? Are you ashamed of me?”
“I—” Toby said, but his Mom was on a roll.
“Oh, woe! That my own son would keep his mother locked away from his lady. Is she not to be bearing my grandchildren? Am I not to know them, either? Just keep me shut up in the mountains, away from my family?”
“Mom, you know I—”
“Good, then. It’s settled. I will cook for her, and you will bring her for dinner. Will she like Schweinshaxe? Ah, what am I saying, everyone is liking Schweinshaxe. Bring her, let me meet her for Winterveil. Friday, yes? You will bring her on Friday.”
“Friday?” Toby said, absently scratching Rolf’s head some more. “I don’t…that is, I’ve other plans on Friday. Keledry--Knight Brightmaul—and I are portalling some of the regiment out to Winterspring for a little celebration.”
“Oh! All of your friends in one place, for me to be meeting and hearing stories of my Tobias. I will be cooking the Scheinshaxe for all of them, then. You come and help your mother with the cooking. I know those Pandarens taught you something, but learn real Alteraci cooking with your mother, yes?”
“Mom, I—”
“Embarrased, he is!” said Petra with a glint in her eye. “Does your Lady Regent disappoint you so, Lord Farnal?” she asked, then, shifting subtely into a more serious tone. “And…I wish to thank your Lord Edain, as Lady Farnal myself. His gift…it was more than generous, and it’s made what could have been a hard, hard winter comfortable. Bring me along, my Lord. Let me say thank you in my own way.”
Toby opened his mouth, then closed it. A request from his mother…that he could laugh off. Wave off. Deny and still smile. A request like that from the Lady Regent of Grafenwohr—Lord Farnal couldn’t deny. “Very well, Lady Petra,” he said, responding to her formal tone with one of his own. “I will come get you.”
“Oh good!” said his mother. “And while we’re there, I can—”
“Actually,” said Toby. “There’s one more thing you should know…”
So @arcticelves is having a birthday today, and we have to celebrate! Thank you so much for all you’ve done for The Terror fandom, and for inspiring me personally. I started this a long time ago, based those images from The Transformers: The Last Knight and any picture of Matthew McNulty in period dress ever. It never went anywhere, and it’s definitely not complete, but here, for you: “For Honour and For Glory.”
Edward notices the horse, a lovely chestnut mare, before he notices its rider.
His brother knights would laugh to know it. George would laugh, in any case. “No wonder your bed is always empty,” Edward can hear him saying. “When you'd rather stare at a pretty horse than a handsome man.” John would shift awkwardly in place, and try to ignore them.
George would be right about one thing, though. This stranger is handsome. His hair is thick and black, his beard just as dark. He wears burnished armour and a fox fur collar that draws even Edward's gaze, as disinterested as he is in fashion. Most remarkable are the man's eyes. They're a piercing light blue Edward can't recall ever seeing before.
“Sir Edward? Sir George? Sir John?” The man asks, as he brings his horse to a staggering halt before them.
George stands up. “Indeed.”
The man casts his beautiful eyes about. Edward feels at once self-conscious. Their camp is rustic, nothing more than three small tents and a cooking pot over the fire, but they are simple men, with simple needs. They made that decision long ago.
“I come from the court of Lord Crozier,” the man says. Edward knows of it. From what he's heard, that place is the opposite of simple. The man dismounts, stumbling a little as he puts his foot on the ground. Edward resists the urge to offer him a hand. “We are in need of help.”
“You are in need of mercenaries,” Edward assumes. It is their occupation, after all. The three of them are known for it, and they are good at it.
Crozier's man turns to look at him. “We are in need of you,” he replies, his gaze meeting Edward's. He holds it until Edward has to look away, his throat suddenly dry and palms suddenly damp. He lets George go through the pleasantries of telling the man where to tie his horse, of inviting him to sit by the fire, of offering him a slice of boiled boar meat from the pot. Edward concentrates on calming his hammering heart.
“We are besieged by a beast,” their visitor says, once they're all seated. He calls himself Thomas. He doesn't give a surname, nor does he call himself “sir” or “lord”, although he is dressed as a knight or a nobleman.
“A beast?” John repeats. “What type of beast?”
“Some believe it to be a bear, but it's unlike any bear I've ever seen. It's stealthier. Stronger. It brushes off our spears and arrows as if they were nothing. It was under the control of a warlock, it seems, but now the warlock is dead, and the creature has turned rogue.”
Edward exchanges a glance with George. Clearly, it does not go unnoticed. Thomas draws himself up. “I am aware of how this sounds, gentlemen, but I promise you, we are being terrorized. The creature stalks us. There have been times we could not leave the castle for weeks on end.” With a dart of a quick pink tongue, Thomas wets his lips. Edward pretends not to have noticed. “The beast killed Lord Franklin.”
“Lord Franklin?” George blinks.
“You knew him?”
“We did.” George looks at John, then at Edward. “We have done work for him in the past.” Edward never cared overmuch for the man. Sanctimonious was the word that best described him, but his gold was as good as anybody's.
“Lady Jane Franklin controls his lands, for the moment,” Thomas says. “With the support of Franklin's favourite, Sir James. But it is not a stable position. Our lands abut theirs, thus any instability in the region affects us as much as them. We cannot properly defend our lands while the beast is at large.”
“Well, you certainly make a very interesting proposition.” George smiles kindly. “I think my brother knights and I...”
“You say 'our lands',” Edward breaks in.
A flush comes to Thomas' face. “In, in, in the sense that we are all devoted to our lord...”
“You are Crozier's heir.” Edward is not as sure of it as he sounds, but when Thomas' blush deepens, he knows he's right. He heard rumours of it, that the childless Crozier took a beloved servant as an adopted son. Obviously, this man is he.
“Crozier sent his own heir out unaccompanied?” John frowns. “When the roads are fraught with far more dangers than a large bear?”
“I left my guards in the village,” Thomas says. “I thought if I approached you humbly, you might be more inclined to offer your assistance. Please. We will be deeply grateful if you can help us. I will be deeply grateful.” Again, Thomas' gaze catches Edward's and holds it. Am I so obvious? Edward wonders. He looks away.
“Why don't you go back to the village, my lord?” George suggests.
“Thomas,” Thomas interrupts.
“Thomas,” George repeats. “The inn is reputable. We will find you there when we've got an answer for you. We shan't keep you waiting long, sir.”
“If that is your wish.” Thomas pushes his hair back from his face. “Thank you for your consideration, gentlemen.” Edward determinedly does not watch as Thomas returns to his horse. It takes him a couple of tries before he can hoist himself into the saddle, and another minute of pulling at the reins before the mare heeds him and leaves the patch of grass she had been happily munching.
“It's madness,” John says, the moment Thomas is gone. “The man is mad. We're not hunters.”
“That's exactly what we are,” Edward points out.
John huffs. “You take my meaning. We do not chase bears, no matter their size or strength.”
“What if it isn't just a bear?” George asks. “Thomas said there was a warlock involved.”
“No,” is John’s immediate reply. “God does not grant us warlocks. Or witches, or demon bears, or anything else.”
“God does grant us lovely men, though, doesn't he, Edward?” George beams at him. “I tell you, if I hadn't pledged my heart to my lady, I might even look twice at that one myself.”
“Stop it!” John stands up abruptly, nearly knocking over the pot. George reaches out to steady it with a hand. “Stop it at once. Both of you. We're not entertaining this idea a moment longer.”
“All right, all right.” George holds up his hands in surrender. “But let me ask you this, John. How long has it been since we were last paid?” Too long. “And how much might we charge Crozier to dispatch something that has been harassing him so badly?” A good deal.
“I'm not too proud to go after a bear instead of a horde of armed men for once,” Edward decides. It might even make for a nice change of pace.
“There we have it, then. Two against one, John.” George shrugs. “Nothing you can say to that.”
From John's pursed lips and creased forehead, it seems like there is a great deal he could say, but he keeps his mouth shut.
“I'll deliver the news.” Edward ignores the resultant smirk from George. There's nothing to smirk about. It's simply his duty, as the de facto leader of the group. “You two break camp and join us in town.”
“Yes, sir,” George grins, heading for the tents even as John scowls on.
The village inn might be reputable enough, but it isn't what one would call luxurious. Thomas and two men, in bright red coats that would be visible a mile away to any highway bandit seeking wealthy quarry, sit in a dark corner of the musty room, mugs of ale before them. Thomas looks up when Edward approaches.
“We will leave at once,” Edward says, by way of greeting. He tried out several on the way over; that was the best he could come up with. “If we ride hard, we should make it to Beechey Island before we have to stop for the night.”
A bright smile lights Thomas' face. Lovely, George had called him. Edward thinks stunning might be more apt. “Why not ride through?” Thomas says. “The sooner we get back, the better.”
“Not even we travel the woods in the dark if we can help it.”
“We did it on the way here.”
“Then you were fools.” Edward stares at the two guards. They conspicuously don't look back. “And damned fortunate you weren't murdered. We stop at Beechey.” His voice is firm. Thomas seems of a mind to argue further, but he apparently thinks better of it.
“Thank you very much. Sir...John?”
“Edward.”
“Sir Edward. I can't tell you how grateful I am.” The fractiousness in Thomas' expression changes into something else. His gaze dips down, then raises back up to Edward's face. Edward can feel himself flushing, glad that the room is dark enough to hide it.
“You don't need to be grateful, just pay us on time,” Edward snaps, more roughly than he intended. Whatever Thomas’ expression belied, it disappears, and Thomas goes briskly to his feet.
“Of course. You needn't worry about that. Get the horses ready, men. We leave as soon as Sir Edward gives us the word.” Thomas' guards go. Thomas hangs back. Edward should say something to him, he knows, but his mind is distressingly blank.
“Thank you,” Thomas repeats. Then, he too is gone, headed for the lone sliver of sunlight that marks the front door.
I'm going to regret this, Edward thinks, but even as the words form in his mind, he knows he wouldn't retract his decision for anything.
A Thrill I’ve Never Known (Chapter 3)
Put to Work
Spending some quality time with Arthur :) This chapter contains hunting, just a heads up.
(All chapters tagged with #ATINK and also posted on Ao3, username PorkChop)
-
A few days passed in the camp and I was starting to feel like a spare part. Dutch would find something for me, that's what everyone kept assuring me, but I'd been doing nothing but chopping vegetables next to Sadie and hanging up the washing to dry with Tilly. I felt like a housewife; it wasn't what I had in mind when I pictured the sorts of things I'd be doing with a gang of outlaws… then again, they were jobs that needed doing whoever you were.
I overheard Pearson telling Charles about a lack of meat. Charles hadn't had a chance to go out hunting in a few days and that wasn't changing on that particular morning, considering he was on guard duty for the camp. I all but spat my tongue out trying to interject.
“I can hunt,” I said with all the hope and enthusiasm of a five year old. They both looked at me blankly. “If you need meat, I can go. Almost everything I've eaten for the past year has been killed and cooked by myself. Dutch wants something for me to do to contribute, maybe this is it.”
“It's worth asking him,” Charles shrugged. “We do need the food.”
“I can forage too. I know a few good places around here to pick berries and carrots.”
“Yeah, alright, he's asking,” Pearson chuckled, gesturing to Charles as he crossed the camp to find Dutch.
Oh, it'd be nice to get out of the camp. I used to move around almost every other day when I was on my own, it was easy enough to pack up my things with how little I actually kept with me. Four days in the same place had me feeling antsy. I watched hopefully as Charles spoke with Dutch, nodding attentively as he listened to whatever he was being told.
When Charles returned he looked a little withered, sighing quietly before speaking; “he says you can go but you'll need someone to go with you. I can't go, so you'll have to find someone else.”
“I'm perfectly capable of going on my own,” I said.
“I bet you are. But you're used to feeding yourself, not an entire group. You'll be better off with a partner. Why don't you ask Arthur? I've taught him some things about hunting,” he suggested. My heart thudded at the mention of his name.
“He's asleep,” I pointed to where he was laying on his cot, hat sitting on top of his face.
“Well, he can't lay around in bed all day. Arthur!” Charles yelled, and he jumped, groaning as he dragged his hat off and peeled his head up to look around. “Hunting.”
“With who?”
“The new girl.”
“New girl…” Arthur murmured, moving to sit up as he scrubbed at his face. He looked up at me, sniffed, then put his hat on and stood up. “Alright, gimme a minute,” he said, his tone tired and exasperated.
I felt like a prize idiot. He was bound to hate me now.
I waited quietly as he readied himself, drinking coffee and spending a few moments with his horse; a Tennessee Walker with a coat a deep, burnt plum colour, mottled with white patches. A very beautiful animal who seemed perfectly calm as he brushed it and saddled it. Charles spoke with him for a moment before heading to the outskirts of camp, standing guard. When Arthur was ready he came over to me, jabbing a thumb back over his shoulder.
“You ready? You'll need to borrow some weapons.”
“If you don't mind lending them,” I nodded.
“That's no problem,” he said, turning and leading the way. I followed him over to his horse, watching as he pulled himself up onto it. “Charles said you could borrow his horse; it's that one just over there.”
I nodded and walked over to it. I took a moment to familiarise myself with the animal, patting it and speaking softly to it; it seemed like a calm horse and didn't mind me mounting it. I arranged my skirt as best I could, though it still rode up my legs a little but damned if I was going to ride sidesaddle. I missed my pants.
“Come on then, new girl,” Arthur flashed a smile at me before leading the way, taking us through the trees that surrounded the camp.
He rode a ways away from camp, I still remembered the area from when I'd stayed there and I realised he was leading me to some open space that was heavily populated with deer. I'd hunted there before, and that brought me comfort. At least I wouldn't make an idiot out of myself by being unsuccessful. Hopefully.
We stopped our horses by a large boulder. Arthur dismounted and with his back to me he asked; “you any good with a bow?”
“It's what I usually use to hunt,” I nodded, taking the opportunity to climb down while he wasn't looking. Dismounting a horse in a dress wasn't particularly easy to do in a dignified manner.
Arthur pulled a bow from his horse and turned to me, nodding towards the horse behind me. “There's one on your horse. Grab it and let's go, I'll let you get the first kill.”
I did as instructed, quickly building up some nerves about performing in front of him. I'd only ever hunted on my own. Arthur waited and let me lead when I was ready. I readied an arrow in anticipation as I began to head through some nearby bushes. I stepped quietly through the cover of greenery, knowing there was a clearing just on the other side. I stopped before the edge, spotting a buck grazing in the clearing, its rear to us. I crouched down, sensing Arthur do the same right behind me.
I waited for a moment, raising the bow and drawing back the arrow; aiming above the deer where it's head might be if it looked up. As I waited, my heart raced. Arthur was so close to me I could hear him breathing, and it was more than a little distracting. I took a peek at him and he met my gaze immediately. His eyes held me and I struggled to look away, the worst part was, he looked totally unaffected. I was sweaty and anxious and tense, and for what? In the moments our eyes were locked I could see how nice his were – so striking and blue – he was handsome, and that was probably why I was acting like a dumbass.
Arthur's eyes snapped away from mine, back towards the deer. It'd raised its head and was in the perfect position for a clean kill; I drew in a quick breath and raised my bow again. I rushed it, I knew it was a bad move, I knew I should've taken a deep breath, adjusted my posture and taken my time. I let go of the arrow and it sailed right past my target. I cursed under my breath and Arthur chuckled as the deer bolted.
“If that's how you normally work a bow I'm surprised you ain't starved,” he teased me and I sighed, feeling my face burn.
“I don't normally have company,” I muttered, rising back up and looking around. More deer were off in the distance.
I went to step out from the bushes, but something held me back. I turned with a frown and Arthur reached out to help me, untangling the fabric of my skirt from the bush it'd hooked onto. I stared at him with slightly widened eyes as he absentmindedly smoothed his hand over the fabric, which happened to be on my backside. He realised his actions and held his hands up.
"My apologies, miss," he said, and I shook my head dismissively.
“I messed that one up. I know,” I said as I strode out from the bushes and retrieved my arrow from where it dug into the ground.
“Don't beat yourself up. I weren't expecting you to do it first time.”
“What is that? Talking like I've never done this before,” I cocked a brow at him and he tilted his head.
“I didn't mean it like that,” he said softly. I kicked myself for my defensiveness and the bite in my tone. I really was making myself out to be a total bitch.
I took a long breath and turned. “Let's try that again. Stay back a little, would you?”
“Of course, ma'am,” my legs went a little weak at his tone, but I soldiered on.
I kept low as I crept towards a small group of deer I'd spotted at the bottom of a gentle decline in the earth. This time, Arthur gave me some space and I felt more at ease, though slightly pressured. I had to get it this time, if I didn't I'd be mortified. He'd think I was a fool who couldn't work a bow, didn't know what she was talking about.
I aimed, ignoring the chatter in my mind and taking a series of slow, deep breaths. With a buck as my target – albeit smaller than the one I'd missed – I let go of the arrow on empty lungs. I could've cheered when it went down quickly and cleanly, but I kept myself composed and straight faced. I looked back at Arthur for his approval, as if I needed it, and he gave me a nod and a smile. My mouth threatened to curl into a smile too, but the last thing I wanted was to look cocky.
“We'll come back for that. Let's go for another; you wanna do it or shall I?” he questioned.
“I don't mind. I could look for some rabbits while you go for another deer?” I shrugged, knowing I could grab a couple of those easy, especially if we separated and Arthur wasn't watching me.
“As in, split up?”
“Yeah.”
“You can't wait to get away from me, huh?” He laughed and my mouth opened with no words to come out. “I'm just messing with you.”
“I've been alone for a long time, Arthur. I'm sorry if I'm a little… if I come across as rude.”
“You're fine. Go look for some rabbits,” he waved me off with an amused shake of his head. I watched him walk away in the direction of where the deer scattered, feeling odd. Like I suddenly didn't want to be there. Like I didn't belong around other people, at least not for extended periods of time.
With a heavy feeling in my chest I set off looking for rabbits. They were everywhere around these parts, it wasn't hard. I got three before heading back to where our horses were waiting, hooking them onto Charles’ saddle. I went back to where the first deer was still laying, deciding what the best way to lift it without getting blood on Mary-Beth's dress would be. It was at that point Arthur found me and lifted the animal for me without even asking. I felt the need to explain myself.
“I wasn't just waiting around for you to do that, I would've carried it myself, but this dress doesn't belong to me,” I told him and he glanced at me with a strange look.
“I didn't think you were,” he said, puzzled. “I don't mind carrying it, I already put another on the back of my horse. No point in you getting covered in blood too.”
I noticed the stain on his shoulder, “thank you.”
“Are you alright?” He asked, still giving me an odd look.
“Weird week,” I sighed. “Don't mind me.”
We reached the horses and he strapped the deer down on the back of the horse I was borrowing. He turned to look at me again.
“How you settling in, anyway?”
“Alright, I guess. People have been kind to me,” I told him, walking over to the horse and stroking it's mane. Arthur didn't move from where he stood right next to me, I'd expected him to mount his own horse. “And it's been nice falling asleep to Javier's music, when he plays at night.”
“Yeah? You seem a little sad.”
“You don't know me, how can you tell whether I'm happy or sad? Maybe I'm always like this,” I questioned and he pursed his lips. It looked like he wanted to say something, but was holding back.
It was brought to the forefront of my mind that I still felt I recognised him. With the opportunity presented, I just came out with it; “Have we met before?”
There was a beat of silence, Arthur seemed surprised yet sort of relieved.
“We have,” he nodded, his shoulders seeming to loosen.
“Why didn't you say something?”
“I couldn't work out if you remembered me,” he laughed a little, but soon turned serious, thoughtful.
“I recognise you. I know I've seen your face, I've been wracking my brain.”
“Well, I didn't wanna bring it up, cause…” he trailed off. “It weren't exactly a good night for you.”
It clicked into place then, the guilt that appeared in his eyes. An uncomfortable air about him.
“Oh, it was you!” I exclaimed, turning to face him head on. “The night my brother got himself killed. You're the man who helped me.”
