You were supposed to be there. You should have been there. But you weren’t. Now you’re alone. The cold reality set in quickly, like a layer of ice encasing your heart. Everything you loved—everyone you loved—gone. Just like that.

I should have been there.

The thought repeated in your mind endlessly.

I shouldn’t be here.

You couldn’t silence your mind. No matter how hard you tried.

You collapse on your bed. The small room—consisting of hardly more than the bed, a leather chair, and a small bar cart—the emptiness a stark reminder of the home you lost. Waves lapped against the boat, causing it to rock in the midnight sea—moving so unlike the ship you called home, every gentle sway like a slap in the face.

You can’t be gone. You can’t leave me like this!

Your sadness crescendos into anger. Visceral, seething, all-consuming wrath. The feeling a crushing weight as your thoughts spiral, converging into a single word. Vengeance. It crept into your very being, burning into you like a brand unto your soul. If it was grief that swallowed you, rage had spit you back out. It pumped through your veins like a horrible drug, devouring you.

It might be Kid’s name etched on your skin, but news of his death seared another in your mind: Shanks.

Fuck you.

You didn’t even care if it killed you. Shit, you knew how powerful he was. For fucks sake, he took out your entire crew. Your Captain. The love of your life. Even if everything went wrong. Even if you didn’t get what you wanted…what did you really have to lose?

As long as this man burns...you wouldn’t mind becoming ash.
