i have this theory that what makes townes' love songs so universally devastating is that their promises are often very very small and simple. "if you needed me, i would come to you" / "won't say i love you, babe, but i will not do you wrong" / "close your eyes i'll be here in the morning." not out of a lack of commitment but simply because when the world is so wide and so full of sadness that's the best you can offer. gets me every fucking time
